Our Salt Farm

About our salt farm.

Our oceanfront salt farm is located on the Kona coastline of Hawaii island - the southern-most island and the largest in the Hawaiian island chain. Kona Sea Salt is the only sea salt in the world made from pure, 900 year-old deep ocean water, rich in natural minerals and flavor. Our salt water is drawn from 2,200 feet below the ocean’s surface making it one of the highest quality finishing salts. In addition to gourmet sea salts, as part of the salt making process, we also farm Deep Ocean Minerals as a magnesium supplement, magnesium bath and Nigari - the traditional tofu coagulant.

Kona Sea Salt Farm Tours

Salt Farm Tours

Join us for a 45 minute tour of our Kona Sea Salt Farm! Located on 7 acres of oceanfront space on Kona Keahole Point, Kona Sea Salt hand harvests Hawaiian Salt from pristine deep ocean waters, 2200 feet below the surface of the Kona Sea. You will learn about the salt harvesting process and the different kinds of salt variations, how deep seawater is different from surface water, the significance of salt in Hawaiian culture and a brief historical overview of the ancient Hawaiian settlement Ho’ona. Lastly, you will finish the tour with a salt tasting of our Kona Pure and Flavored Salts.

Our salt farm is located at Keāhole Point, Ho‘ona

Keāhole Point, Ho‘ona

Our salt farm is located at Keāhole Point, in the area known as Ho‘ona, the westernmost point of Hawai‘i Island. The unique geological features on land and offshore of Keāhole Point (named after the Āhole fish) has historically provided Ho’ona with an abundance of resources. 1,000 years ago, Anchialine ponds provided brackish water where ʻopae ‘ula, an endemic shrimp, algae and seaweeds grew. The ponds were ringed by native plants, including makaloa used for making fine mats. Fresh water could be gathered from lava tubes for limited farming and drinking, and there were rich fishing grounds right offshore.

Ancient Hawaiian Fishing Grounds

Ancient Hawaiian Fishing Grounds

The combination of unique ocean currents and the bathymetry (underwater topography) created a natural ocean upwelling. Upwelling, is a phenomenon that transports water rich in nutrients to the ocean surface. These nutrients “fertilize” surface waters, encouraging the growth of plant life, including phytoplankton   and through the food chain eventually resulting in unusually productive fishing grounds. Ho’ona was also famous for Pā‘aiea, a thoughtfully managed fishpond 3 miles long and 1.5 miles wide, owned by Kamehameha the Great. In 1801 the fishpond was covered by lava when Mount Hualalai erupted and later a small settlement arose again.

NELHA, Est. 1974

NELHA, The Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority, was founded in 1974 to research the potential uses of very cold Deep Ocean Water for OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) and explore as Governor Ariyoshi put it, “the mineral resources of the Pacific.” The location was selected because the bathymetry provided the ability to easily access Deep Ocean Water directly offshore. Over time, NELHA has expanded to 877 acres and the companies and research and educational institutions located there are involved in neutraceuticals, aquaculture and research.

Deep Ocean Water

Deep Ocean Water is created when ice is formed off Greenland, and the salt, which canʻt freeze, is left in the surface water. The surface water becomes denser and heavier and sinks to the bottom of the sea. That water becomes part of the Thermohaline Circulation and 900 years later, via the Global Conveyor Belt , it reaches Keāhole Point. A 40” pipe travels a mile offshore and 2,200 ft. deep and pumps the seawater up to our solar evaporation beds. Keāhole Point is one of very few places in the world where this is possible.

Kona Sea Salts

Our company began life in 1992 when a team of University researchers founded a startup venture, Aquasearch Inc., to explore the uses of micro algae as a clean energy source and salmon feed additive. In the process, they discovered that Astaxanthin  has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties for people and they were the first to make it available as a consumer nutritional supplement, AstaFactor . In 2004 they began to produce Kona Sea Salts using Deep Ocean Water using a contemporary version of traditional Hawaiian salt making technology, solar-evaporation.

Big island salt farm tour details.

This tour came highly recommended to us by our newsletter readers, so we had to try and we’re so glad we did! We didn’t know how much there was to know about sea salt, but Kona Sea Salt isn’t any ordinary salt from the ocean, it comes from 2,200 feet under the surface where microplastics and other ocean pollutants haven’t reached. We’ll let the experts explain the rest when you go on your tour, but not only does this salt take a unique journey, but it’s also packed with minerals you don’t get from other salts.

Kona Sea Salt offers morning and sunset tours. Their morning tours run at 9 and 11 am daily, and their sunset tour runs Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at 6:15 pm. The oceanfront location is absolutely stunning, so you can’t go wrong with either option. Soak up some salty knowledge and have a salt tasting to start or end your day.

Kona Salt Farm also offers wellness experiences with its mineral-rich seawater, salts, and minerals. Learn more about their 1.5-hour Deep Ocean Water Mineral Spa Foot Soak or their 2 0-minute deep soak salt farm tour add-on .

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.

  • pegeth13 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Salt farm tour and the best foot soak I ever had. I never really thought about how sea salt was made before. We were on the Big Island in Hawaii last week. We saw the pipes what bring in the water from the Pacific Ocean and how the water is evaporated off to give them their Hawaiian Sea Salt. We were thrilled with the tour and the tasting was fantastic. We tasted the salts that they make and there three other salts to taste that were made elsewhere. They brought out platters of pineapple, tomato and cucumber to dip in the various salts and try them. I also indulged in a fantastic foot soak. Yes the water is super cold--like in the 40's but the staff person said to dip my feet, keep them in for as long as I can, take them out for a few seconds (15) and then just keep dipping my feet and taking a break. They add magnesium to the water which helps also. I usually have so much pain in my feet, but they felt great for the rest of the day. My husband cannot stand cold water and he could not do it. The tour guide was amazing! She answered all of our questions and explained the salt process wonderfully and in depth. The near by ocean waves were perfect ambiance when walking through the drying tubes. The tasting was great and the products are going to become a household staple! Definitely a worthwhile stop for any salt or sea lovers! Part of their profit goes to ocean clean up of the Old Hawaiian Islands. Super educational and super informative. Wonderful staff, Great Ti

Last outing for the trip and we are glad we discovered this little gem. Being home cooks, my wife and I use a lot of salt, but seem out good sea salt because of its taste and mild saltiness. Found out that Guy Fieri featured this farm on one of his shows. The tour was great, ocean view is stunning and the tour very informative highlighting Hawaiian culture and the importance of caring for the sea and land all within the story of salt making. Being a commercial farm, we went a little crazy with the salt purchases after the tasting. Well worth supporting this local business and creator of jobs on the island. Our tour guide, Ipolani, was Supa informative and had much aloha. My wife and I learned lots and if ever back on the big island of Hawaii will come back and visit for the feet soak. Mahalo Nui Loa.

This is such a wonderful place to visit. Not only are the tours very interesting, the location is so beautiful. And of course they have the most incredible flavored salts. The smoked sea salt is my favorite, the flavor that it imparts on a ribeye or salmon filet is outstanding.. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. We love visiting their Salt store and The salt variety packages are now The most popular gift we give when traveling to the mainland.

Very intriguing place where yoh mearn about how the "farm" se salt from 2200 feet down in the ocean. They purify it and make delicious flavors that will kick up any dish you make at your own hale. And yes Guy Fieri has been here too. More importantly, He ey Kalinin and friends play here on occasion. Ikalani was the gracious host for our tasting.

Unbelievable experience you should not miss! Ipo was our tour guide and she is just so graceful and full of knowledge! You learn a little culture, a little about the area, ocean cleanup efforts and a whole lot about salt harvesting! Breathtaking views of the beautiful ocean so close you can feel the spray go the waves. Seeing how Kona sea salt is harvested gives you a new appreciation of salt! Please, please, please! If you get to book a tour do yourself a favor and book the foot soak! 15 minute soak in 4o+ degree ultra pristine sea water directly from 2200 feet below sea level! So relaxing and if you've been on your feet in the Kona heat this is a great way to cool down. 10/10 recommend for sure! Kamaʻāina and malihini alike will learn and enjoy!

We came here for a tour of the farm and a foot soak bath, and we had a wonderful time. Our tour guide was very personable, and full of information. I learned a lot about salt and the environment. After the tour we got to taste the salts with some veggies and fruit that were provided. After the tasting we took a cold ocean water foot soak that was very refreshing. Overall we had a great time here, and will come back again.

What a great local business. The tour was so fun and educational. We loved the setup. Our group purchased the foot soak. It was COLD, but setup so nicely. The taste testing was great, they have so many different flavors of salt. 100% recommend to those into finishing salts and local history. Younger kids may not enjoy.

We had such a fun experience at the sunset salt tour! The tour was more entertaining than a salt tour has any right to be. We were able to see the salt tunnels and salt greenhouse, and learn about this unusual method of salt production. We also got to taste it at different stages of the process. Our tour guide was so helpful and kind, telling us about the history of the island and providing recommendations for our trip. A highlight was the salt tasting at the end, where you get a plate of fruits and vegetables to dip in different flavored salts. I would highly recommend the salt tour, and the sunset salt tour was especially beautiful. If you're on the fence about doing the salt tour, do yourself a favor and go for it (especially at sunset)! Surprisingly one of the best things we did in Hawaii.

Tours are available, but I didn't come here for the tour - I just wanted to buy the salts to take home as omiyage! When I walked into the shop, the guy who was working here asked if I wanted a tasting. Sure, why not? He quickly went over the various salts that they had, and then gave me some space to try at my leisure. I ended up buying over $100 worth of salts. :) It's pricey, but these salts are special - not only do they originate in Kona, but they're flavors are delicious! You can definitely taste the difference between their salts and other salts you buy at the grocery store. Support local!

Kona Sea Salt Farm Tour Review Big Island Hawaii: Worth It?

salt tour big island

Have you heard about Kona Sea Salt Farm on the Big Island? Wondering if it’s worth visiting?

I lived on the Big Island for a year and visited many different types of farms on the island. I was impressed with what I found at the Kona Sea Salt Farm.

This little known and completely unique farm produces the only sea salt in the world made from deep ocean water.

You’ll learn about where this salt comes from, how it’s harvested and processed, and taste test the variety of flavors that come straight from the ocean a few feet from the premises.

As it’s right by the airport, it is also a convenient tour to take as one last Hurrah! before flying home.

Do I think it’s worth visiting? Yes I do, and I’ll show you why!

Don’t have time to read a whole post? Just wanna get to the goods and add some “spice” to your trip? Book the Kona Sea Salt Farm Now!

Kona Sea Salt Farm

On this flavorful tour you’ll: learn some science and history, see firsthand how sea salt is produced, and of course, taste all the salty varieties!

Good for killing time before your flight home!

Kona Sea Salt Farm Tickets

Kona Sea Salt Farm gives two 1-hr tours a day: 10:00am and 12:00pm. Also, on Sunday, Tuesdays, and Thursday take a sunset tour at 5:45pm. Each tour can accommodate 15 guests. Reservations are highly recommended as they do sell out but walk ups are welcome if space is available.

Kona Sea Salt Farm Tour

Once you have been checked in, you are offered a welcome cup of refreshing water mixed with their magnesium drops, a healthy by-product of the “salting” process.

As you wait for your tour to begin, browse the gift shop or have a seat at a wooden patio table, enjoying the beachy view and the sound of the ocean.

Side note : Kona Sea Salt Farm offers their premises as an event venue; a beautiful location for a sunrise or sunset wedding .

Begin the tour with an intro to the company. It was founded in 2004 after originally being a research company for 12 years that studied using micro algea as a clean energy source. Through their research they discovered that Astaxanthin, the red pigment in the algae, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. They were the first to supply astaxanthin as a nutritional supplement sold as AstaFactor.

They then switched gears to create sea salt. Mostly an e-commerce company, Kona Sea Salt Farm was about to go under during Covid. However, one of their biggest wholesale accounts saved them by buying the company and expanding it.

Before you are led to the beach, they offer giant cocktail umbrellas (paper parasols 😀 ) as protection from the hot Kona sun. As someone who gets heat stroke easily, I appreciated this amenity and took them up on it. Plus I felt cute!

kona sea salt farm provides a parasol from the hot kona sun

Walk to the ocean edge, stopping along a portion of the 6.4-mile path often used for mountain bikers and hikers. From here, learn and see for yourself how the island’s volcanoes formed the coastline causing dramatic shelf drops not far from shore. During whale season you might spot the giant sea mammals passing by.

kona sea salt farm beach view

At only 300 yards out the ocean floor is 2,200ft down. It is from this depth that Kona Sea Salt Farm harvests their mineral-rich, chilly 40°F deep ocean water through 40in diameter pipes. In the distance you can see an out-of-commission pipe used years ago but has since been replaced by pipes more hidden and less of an eyesore.

The deep ocean water is pulled through the Thermohaline current, originating in Greenland but taking 900 years to reach the Big Island.

tour guide along walking/biking path on kona sea salt farm tour

Because the ocean water is pulled so deep below the surface, the sea salt is higher in mineral content (like magnesium, iron, zinc, calcium, potassium, iodine, and manganese) and lower in the amounts of microplastics and contaminants other sea salts have.

Next, stroll back to where the salty magic happens. Pass by drying pads originally used for those algae experiments. Climb up a few steps, minding your head, as you stand on deck before rows of salt tunnels.

drying pads at kona sea salt farm

Here you can observe the drying process from ocean water to salt crystals in their solar evaporation tunnels. Plastic sheets protect the salt from contamination while fans create tunnels for air flow. As the Kona sun beats down, 900 pounds of sea water per tunnel evaporate for about 8 weeks before resulting in 300 pounds of white salt crystals.

kona sea salt farm salt drying tunnels

Through this process they create about 32 tons of salt a year.

At the back of the pad they have a greenhouse set up doing the same thing. The greenhouse can reach up to a sweltering 150°F inside. They are anticipating expanding to this procedure in the future as it is easier to control and protect the drying environment.

tub of salt crystals at kona sea salt farm

Step inside and experience the heat of the greenhouse and see up close the large tub filled with salt, reminiscent of a crunchy snowy field.

Just outside the greenhouse, a black monolith fountain gurgles up that deep sea water for you to experience the cold, 40°F water lying below the surface of the ocean.

black monolith of deep ocean water at kona sea salt farm

The last exhibit are the wooden hoppers used as the final drying step. Salt from the tunnels are hand scooped into these giant wooden funnels.

As the salt continues to dry, the remaining moisture drains away and collects into buckets below. This is where the magnesium by-product is collected.

slat drying hoppers at kona sea salt farm

Get a sample of the drying medium grain and coarse grain. You’ll be surprised that there is actually a flavor difference between the sizes. Also note that this sea salt has 33% less sodium than ordinary table salt.

kona sea salt farm tasting table

Make your way back to the visitor center for even more salty samples. With pieces of cucumbers, pineapples, and tomatoes create your own line up of salt blended flavors on your plate:

  • Farm Fresh Herbs
  • Hot Hawaiian Chili Pepper
  • Alaea Rich Red Hawaiian Clay
  • Lemon Rosemary
  • Moloka’i Kiawe Smoked
  • Spicy Hawaiian Seaweed
  • Zest de L’orange
  • Sunset Beach BBQ
  • Kahuku Shrimp Truck
  • Pipeline Poke Bowl

Be careful or you might lose track of which flavor is which. You might want to put only a couple flavors on your plate at a time and not all of them at once, like my mistake.

Some of these blends are made with sea salt pulled from Molokai, but rest assured, it’s all Hawaiian sea salt.

Here concludes your Kona Sea Salt Farm tour. You are free to shop the gift shop or carry on your merry way.

Kona Sea Salt Farm Gift Shop

kona sea salt farm salt flavor display

If you don’t want to take the salt farm tour, you can still just visit the Kona Sea Salt Farm gift shop and purchase salty products.

They have tasteful displays of all their various salt flavors packaged in hand-labeled, cork-topped glass bottles. You can buy individual bottles or put together a mix-and-match gift box of three flavors of your choosing.

Other than their storefront you can buy their products online. You miiiiight find them in random places on the Big Island, but don’t count on it.

Deep Ocean Water Foot Soak

After your tour, book a revitalizing 20-minute deep ocean cold water foot soak.

Sit under the the ocean-view cabana while your feet experience a refreshing escape soaking in salty deep ocean water sourced from 2,200 feet beneath the ocean’s surface. This deep ocean water is naturally abundant in magnesium and maintains a refreshing temperature of approximately 47 degrees.

The cold water foot soak is not only refreshing but it also offers potential benefits such as pain relief, reduced swelling, and aid in post-workout recovery.

Final Thoughts on the Kona Sea Salt Farm Tour

🧂 >> BOOK the Kona Sea Salt Farm Tour Here! << 🧂

I found the Kona Sea Salt Farm to be a one-of-a-kind tour to take. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour but thought the price was a little steep for what you get.

The tour lasted about 45 minutes and was super informative. I would have liked to have seen the process of grinding the salt from coarse to medium and also how they bottle it.

bags of kona sea salt farm salt

Generously, the salt sampling was unlimited …well limited to how much salt your tongue can handle in one sitting!

Because of its nearness to the airport, this tour makes for a great way to kill time and squeeze in one last activity before taking an afternoon flight home.

All-in-all the Kona Sea Salt Farm was a positive experience and I would recommend visiting , just like Guy Fieri does in a “Guy! Hawaiian Style” episode.

🌺 Big Island Travel Planning Guide 🌺

🚨  Should I buy Hawaii travel insurance?

YES  — I recommend Travel Insurance Master because you can compare multiple options with one click. With plans starting at $5/day per person, why not give yourself piece of mind? Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

🚗 Is it safe to rent a car on the Big Island?

YES — It’s totally safe to drive on the Big Island. And unless you plan to chill by the resort pool the entire time, renting a car is pretty much a necessity on the Big Island! Jeep rentals are popular . I recommend Discount Hawaii Car Rental , as they have some of the best prices around.

📞  Will my phone work on the Big Island?

PROBABLY  — Most, if not all, cell providers work on the Big Island. However, be prepared for some dead spots in the more remote parts of the island. For example, I always lose service driving through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park .

🛏️  What’s the best way to book my Big Island accommodations?

For Big Island hotels,  Booking.com is amazing because you can often reserve your room with no money down. If you are looking for an Airbnb condo with a kitchen and more space, don’t forget to check VRBO  for potentially better prices and options.

✈️  What’s the best site to buy Big Island flights?

I recommend looking at Skyscanner for finding cheap flights. Pro Tip : check if flying into Hilo is cheaper than flying into Kona.

🛂  Do I need a passport to visit Hawaii?

NO  — If you are a US citizen, you do not need a passport as Hawaii is part of the United States . If you are from out of the country, the same passport and visa requirements are the same as entering anywhere in the United States from your country.

🧳 What should I pack to the Big Island?

Pack for tropical weather but also prepare for colder than expected nights and early mornings, so a light sweatshirt is recommended. Check out this list of 5 Things Not to Forget to Pack .
