‘Iolani Palace is a magnificent mansion that preserves an important part of Hawaiian history.  The Palace is well worth visiting when in  Honolulu , and is one of the main structures to see on the Honolulu Historic District Walk.

‘Iolani Palace was the official residence of the reigning Hawaiian sovereign, King Kamehameha, and the only royal palace in the United States.   The cornerstone was laid on December 31, 1879.  The Hawaiian government at the time had appropriated funds to build the Palace as a way to mark Hawaii’s status as a modern nation.  The building was complete by August 1882, and that original palace was known as Hale Ali’I (House of the Chief), however that was demolished in 1874 to make way for the palace that stands today, which was renamed ‘Iolani Palace.  ‘Iolani means ‘Royal Hawk’ in the Hawaiian language.

Two monarchs governed from the Palace: King Kalakaua and Queen Lili’uokalani, and Kamehameha III, IV and V utilized the palace as their main residence.  The monarchy was overthrown by the U.S. in 1893, was then used as a capitol building, and was finally restored and opened as a public museum in 1978.  Apparently the area was once the site of an ancient heiau (Hawaiian Temple) that was destroyed.

In 1825, a white-washed coral block was constructed as a royal tomb for the remains of Kamehameha II and his wife, Queen Kamamalu.  In subsequent years, many kings of Hawaii were buried at the site, but in 1865 eighteen coffins were removed and transferred to a Royal Mausoleum in Nuuanu Valley.  Today, the royal tomb area is located in the southeast quadrant of the grounds.  With respect for Hawaiian chiefs who may still be buried there, it is marked by a fenced area with ‘kapu’ signs indicating it is a forbidden area.

Also on the Palace Grounds is Iolani Barracks, which looks like a medieval castle, was completed in 1871 and is also a coral block structure that contains an open courtyard which is surrounded by rooms that once housed the royal palace and royal tomb guards, before the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy.  The Barracks were originally located on the grounds that the Hawaii State Capitol Building sits and was moved block by block and reconstructed in 1965 to be where it is now on the Iolani Palace grounds, where it houses the ticket office and the Palace Gift Shop (open Tues-Sat 8.30am-4.30pm).

The first and second floors of 'Iolani Palace have been meticulously restored and house the stunning Throne Room, Grand Hall, The State Dining Room, the Blue Room, as well as the private suites of the King and Queen.  Portraits of Hawaiian Royalty line the walls.  Lush crimson and gold décor fill the Throne Room and beautifully carved doors featuring Hawaiian woods abound.

Iolani Palace (Oahu)

Published: Jul 5, 2022 · Modified: Jul 14, 2022 by Kathy · This post may contain affiliate links · 2 Comments

Built in 1845, Iolani Palace is the only royal palace in the United States. It was the royal residence for the Hawaiian monarchy until 1893. Today it is a museum that is open to the public. Here's everything you need to know to about visiting Iolani Palace.

Entrance to Iolani Palace.

What Is Iolani Palace?

Iolani Palace is the only royal palace in the US. It is a national historic landmark and a must-visit when you come to Hawaii.

Iolani Palace is located in the heart of Honolulu on the island of Oahu. It is a 15 minute drive from Waikiki and 1 minute from Downtown Honolulu.

The Palace served as the royal residence for the rulers of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1845 to 1893, starting with Kamehameha III and ending with Queen Liliʻuokalani.

The monarchy was overthrown in 1893 and Iolani Palace was used as the government headquarters for the Provisional Government until 1969.

It was then restored and opened as a museum to the public in 1978.

The Throne Room at Iolani Palace.

Growing up in Hawaii, we toured Iolani Palace as school children. The history of Hawaii is unique and being able to tie what we learned in the classroom to a physical place helped to paint a full picture of Hawaii's royal history.

As an adult, I love taking friends and family who visit. Yes Hawaii is very much sun, sand, and beach. But that showcases just a tiny fraction of Hawaii. A visit to Iolani Palace is one of many things that provide a richer and more complete understanding of our home.

Entrance to Iolani Palace.

Can You Visit Iolani Palace?

Yes. That is the whole point of this post! ^_^

Iolani Palace offers several types of tours ranging from an audio tour to a white glove tour.

We typically book the Docent-Led Tour. It is a 1-hour group tour that gives just the right amount of time and guidance to learn about the history of the Place.

It is a walking tour that covers the two floors of the Palace so you have a chance to walk the grand staircase and see all the different rooms from the dining room to bedrooms.

The Queen's Bedroom at Iolani Palace.

The docents at Iolani Palace are gracious and very knowledgeable, some have been leading tours for many years. Come with questions, they seem to know everything!

This tour is currently $30 per person (there's also a $19.95 *kamaaina rate).

* Kamaaina means local . Many places in Hawaii offer kamaaina discounts and to get the discount you need a local ID card.

Iolani Palace Facts

Here are few interesting facts to get you started for your visit to Iolani Palace:

Electricity and Telephones Did you know Iolani Palace had electricity and telephones four years before the White House? So modern! In 1881, King Kalākaua (who was very interested in technology) went on a world tour. He met with Thomas Edison in NYC and the rest was history! Electric lights were officially installed and turned on at Iolani Palace in 1887.

Quilt There is a very famous quilt (pictured above) made by Queen Liliʻuokalani during her 9 months of imprisonment ( in her own Palace ). One part of the tour takes you into a room that holds the original quilt. It is an intricate patchwork quilt that documents her memories and important events in her life. You can read more about the quilt in this 2003 Star Bulletin article .

American Florentine The architectural style of Iolani Palace is called American Florentine. It is the only example of American Florentine architecture in the world.

Entrance to Iolani Palace.

There are events held throughout the year that you can attend on the Iolani Palace grounds (without needing to book a tour).

Though you can't access the inside of the Palace without a booked tour, you can still enjoy the palace grounds which are quite beautiful!

A popular event this summer is the The Royal Hawaiian Band at Iolani Palace . This takes place most Fridays between 12pm-1pm (make sure to double check schedule/time online ). It's a live band concert held on the palace grounds. The band was founded by King Kamehameha III in 1836. It is the only band in the US with a royal legacy...so cool! Bring a picnic mat and snacks to make it a full experience. Don't forget to wear sunscreen.

P.S. The Royal Hawaiian Band also plays at many venues throughout the island.

Check out the most current events on Iolani Palace's Events page .

Tips and FAQ

There is metered parking available onsite and on nearby streets. Make sure to bring coins. Fill the meter for 2 hours to be on the safe side. Last thing you want is to leave the tour midway to fill up the parking meter.

Dress codes are fairly relaxed in Hawaii, but Iolani Palace requires shirts and footwear. Definitely no bathing suits or beachwear. You are in a palace, after all.

Tours run throughout the day, but we prefer the early morning tours. It can get pretty hot in Hawaii, so if you want a chance to stroll the Palace grounds before/after the tour, it's wise to book for a morning tour.

Iolani Palace is right by Downtown and Chinatown, so there are plenty of good food options. From takeout to sit down, casual to fancy, there's something for every appetite and budget. Here are a few great spots: The Pig and the Lady , Lam's Kitchen (best chow fun dishes and you tiao), Fête , Maguro Brothers (super fresh sashimi on rice), The Daley Burger , and Kahiau Jerky Poke & Provisions (make sure to try the Hapa Poi which layers taro and sweet potato poi).

10 Reasons to Visit Iolani Palace on Oahu

Iolani Palace on Oahu - things to do on Oahu when it rains

Hawaii Aloha Travel > Blog > 10 Reasons to Visit Iolani Palace on Oahu

Iolani Palace is a beautiful attraction in Honolulu, and visiting can change your entire outlook on Hawaiian history and culture. But it can be tempting to skip it since there are so many things to see and do on Oahu. After all, you may wonder if it’s worth stepping off the beach and exploring some of the island’s museums.

We say absolutely! In fact, learning about Hawaiian and Polynesian culture is essential for appreciating your time in the islands. And a great place to start is Iolani Palace.

Here are the top 10 reasons to visit Iolani Palace, along with a few tips to make your time there truly worthwhile.

#1 – Iolani Palace is the Only Official Royal Residence in the United States

America may be known for resisting monarchies, but there is one place that was once ruled by royalty: Hawaii. In 1810, Kamehameha I united all of Hawaii under his rule, creating a monarchy that lasted for 80 years.

Construction of Iolani Palace was completed in 1882, and it then became the home of King Kalakaua and later his sister, Queen Liliuokalani. Just over 10 years later, in 1893, the monarchy was overthrown. After that, Iolani Palace served as the government capitol building until 1969.

Now, the palace has been restored to its original grandeur to showcase the opulence and innovation of the Hawaiian kingdom.

#2 – You can Better Understand Hawaiian Identity

Many people visit Hawaii without knowing what it means to be Hawaiian . Iolani Palace serves as a place to honor and celebrate Hawaiian identity. Visitors can better understand Hawaiian as a race, identity, and culture.

Artifacts include photos, furniture, documents, military items, and artwork. Walking through it and seeing everything in person allowed me to really immerse myself in this monumental era in Hawaiian history.

#3 – Hear the Royal Hawaiian Band (On Fridays!)

This will be music to your ears! The Royal Hawaiian Band plays at Iolani Palace every Friday.

King Kamehameha III created the Royal Hawaiian Band in 1836. They played at official royal occasions, funerals, and parades. They also were known for traveling throughout the islands, bringing their music to areas throughout the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Today, the Royal Hawaiian Band continues to provide polished, creative performances in Hawaii and beyond.

They perform outside the palace on the lawn, so you don’t need a ticket to the palace to enjoy their music. However, you definitely should still see the full museum to appreciate the band’s significance.

#4 – They Offer Great Docent-Led Tours

Iolani Palace offers two primary options: self-guided audio tours, and docent-guided tours. If you’re able to visit on Wednesday, Thursday, or Saturday, then a docent-led tour is certainly worth the few extra bucks. You’ll be able to hear amazing stories and ask questions as your knowledgeable guide takes you through the palace.

#5 – Specialty Tours Allow for Incredible Insight into History

Beyond the regular docent-led and self-guided audio tours, Iolani Palace also offers a range of specialty tours. These programs provide a deep dive into specific aspects of royal Hawaiian history. Past and present specialty tours include Hawaii-Japan relations, royal fashion, and a behind-the-scenes white-glove tour.

#6 – Kamaaina Are Free Once a Month

Are you a Hawaii resident with a state ID? If so, you can tour Iolani Palace for free during their Kamaaina Sunday. The monthly event features entertainment and food vendors, creating a great experience the entire family can enjoy.

Self-guided audio tours allow kamaaina to walk through history as they see close-up artifacts of Hawaii’s monarchy.

#7 – See Where Queen Liliuokalani was Imprisoned

One of the biggest turning points in Hawaiian history was when the new provisional Hawaiian government imprisoned Queen Liliuokalani. Her 1895 trial took place in Iolani’s throne room, and she served an eight-month sentence inside the palace.

Today, you can walk through these pivotal moments as you tour Iolani Palace, seeing the sight of her trial and the room where she served her time. Inside Iolani Palace’s imprisonment room is a quilt the overthrown queen worked on while under house arrest.

Queen Liliuokalani

Though Queen Liliuokalani’s arrest was the most notable during the overthrow and counter-revolution, many of her supporters were sentenced to death for treason.

#8 – Iolani Palace is One of the Most Haunted Places on Oahu

Many Honolulu ghost tours will take you by Iolani Palace. The site was once a royal burial ground, and visitors with royal bloodline have reported hearing chanting or music inside the palace.

One ghost tour guide even reported seeing a woman’s silhouette in the window of Queen Liliuokalani’s imprisonment room . The sighting occurred late at night, when no living souls would be inside the palace.

Even the trees outside are said to be haunted – many believe that banyan trees, like the two in front of Iolani Palace – hold lost spirits.

A docent may be able to provide even more accounts of paranormal activity at the palace.

#9 – It’s Located Right in Honolulu

Iolani Palace is worth driving across the island to visit. After all, you’ll be able to take a break from the sun and surf while learning about this incredible time in Hawaiian history. But for anyone staying in Honolulu or Waikiki, it’s incredibly convenient to visit Iolani Palace.

This historical landmark is located in downtown Honolulu. There is limited paid parking onsite, along with street and garage parking nearby.

#10 – There are Other Great Landmarks Nearby

Iolani Palace is just part of a great day exploring Honolulu’s many landmarks and attractions. One of the best ways to follow up your tour of the palace is by visiting Washington Palace, where Queen Liliuokalani lived most of her life, including the time before and after residing at Iolani Palace.

Right across the street from Iolani Palace, you’ll find historic Aliʻiolani Hale, home of Hawaii’s Supreme Court for over 150 years. It also has a striking King Kamehameha Statue and is a popular spot when touring places where Hawaii Five-0 was filmed , since it provided exterior shots of the fictional headquarters.

You’ll also be near the Eternal Flame Memorial, which honors the heroes of the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

Tips for Visiting Iolani Palace

Ready to explore Iolani Palace yourself? Here are our top tips for making the most of your visit!

Opt for a Docent-led Tour if Possible

We mentioned their great docent tours above, but it’s worth mentioning again. You really get an incredible experience for a small price difference, as the docents can provide unbeatable insight and answer questions during the tour.

Be Mindful of Your Children

Palace staff do welcome children, but they are strict about making sure they’re not running around. You must keep children under five in your arms, in a carrier, in a palace-provided stroller, or holding your hand. And staff will ask you to leave if your child is disruptive or disorderly.

So definitely bring along the keiki (kids) if you can manage them. But if you worry they’ll still be on beach-day mode, consider skipping this attraction until they’re a little older.

Reserve Your Iolani Palace Tour Online

Whether you opt for a self-guided or docent-led tour, be sure to reserve your time online in advance. The palace doesn’t accept any walk-up visits.

Go Beyond the Tour

Audio and docent-led tours of Iolani Palace take you through the main two levels, where you’ll find luxurious rooms and offices. But you’ll also be able to explore even more of the palace: the basement and the grounds.

Outside, you’ll find the queen’s coronation pavilion, royal barracks, and the former site of the Royal Mausoleum. Inside, head to the basement, where you’ll find photographs and other exhibits.

The Queen's Coronation Pavilion

Of course, obey all signage, as some areas are restricted.

And don’t forget to check out the gift shop – it’s a great place to buy souvenirs, books, and local crafts.

Hawaii Royalty FAQ

While there were lots of chiefs on each Hawaiian island and many people know about King Kamehameha I-V, the most recent prominent members of the royal family in Hawaii include King Kalakaua, Queen Kapiolani, Queen Liliuokalani, and Princess Kaiulani.

It depends on who you talk to. There are descendants of the monarchy who are alive today, and some people refer to them as princes or princesses. That’s to show respect for their status as a descendant of Hawaiian chiefs. And Abigail Kinoiki Kekaulike Kawananakoa is Hawaii’s last living princess. But things get a little muddled because Hawaii is part of the United States, which is a democracy, not a monarchy.

On January 17, 1893, a group of 13 Caucasian businessmen and lawyers staged a coup against Queen Liliuokalani and the Hawaiian government. The queen was imprisoned inside Iolani Palace for 8 months before moving to house arrest at her home in Washington Square. She reached out to the U.S. presidents and Congress to appeal the annexation, but those efforts didn’t go anywhere. She ended up setting up a trust to support Hawaiian children and impoverished families.

History of Iolani Palace and Hawaiian Royalty

Who lived in iolani palace.

King David Kalakaua was inspired by European royalty and decided to build a royal palace of Hawaii. The construction of this Hawaiian palace was finished in 1882.

Image of King David Kalakaua in black and white in his dress clothing

King Kalakaua lived there with his wife Queen Kapiolani as well as his sister (and successor) Queen Liliuokalani.

Image of Queen Liliuokalani wearing a sash in a black and white photo

After King Kalakaua’s death, his sister took the throne for a few years before the U.S. government overthrew the Hawaiian government. She was later imprisoned inside the palace. That’s a painful part of the Iolani Palace history.

Once the U.S. annexed Hawaii, most of the items inside the palace were sold at auction and the palace itself became a government building.

In the 1970s, steps were made to restore Iolani Palace to its former grandeur and give people a place to learn about the Hawaiian monarchy.

What Does the Word Iolani Mean?

The Hawaiian name “Iolani” translates to “Royal Hawk.” It’s also part of the full name of King Kamehameha IV. King Kalakaua named the palace after King Kamehameha IV.

Why is Iolani Palace Important?

Most Americans never learned about Hawaiian history in school. That’s a shame because they don’t understand that Americans overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy and forcefully annexed the islands.

Image of the Hawaiian royal emblem on a green gate outside of Iolani Palace in Hawaii.

The Hawaiian monarchs traveled the world meeting with leaders and inventors. Iolani Palace even had electricity years before the White House. It was actually the first royal palace in the world to have electricity.

Hearing the stories of what happened and walking through the same halls as the Kings and Queens of Hawaii puts history in perspective.

Iolani Palace Tours

If you want to get inside Iolani Palace, you’ll need to book a tour . They actually have several tour options available.

The cheapest Iolani Palace tickets are for the self-guided audio tour. The rates are $25 for adults (18+), $20 for teens (13-17), $10 for kids (5-12), and kids 4 and younger are free.

Image of a lady wearing a long white muumuu inside Iolani Palace.

However, I highly recommend spending a few extra dollars to upgrade to the docent-led tour. It’s much more engaging than an audio tour and you can ask questions.

The rates for the Iolani Palace docent-led tour are $30 for adults (18+), $27 for teens (13-17), $12 for kids (5-12), and kids 4 and younger are free.

They also have an array of specialty/private tours. These are great for returning guests who want to go a bit deeper into Hawaiian history and culture.

No matter which you pick, you’ll need to make Iolani Palace tour reservations ahead of time.

What to Know Before You Visit Iolani Palace on Oahu

When is iolani palace open.

The Iolani Palace hours can vary throughout the year. They are closed Sundays, Mondays, and holidays. They are usually open Tuesdays-Saturdays.

Image of a boy standing in front of Iolani Palace in Honolulu Hawaii.

They offer tours at specific times on certain days of the week. Check this schedule for up-to-date information.

IOLANI PALACE PARKING

I’m not going to sugarcoat it, the parking around the palace SUCKS. You really need 2 hours of parking and most of the metered street parking is either 1-hour maximum or there are no parking signs.

There is limited metered parking on the palace grounds, but those tend to get snapped up quickly.

I recommend leaving an extra 15 minutes early from your previous destination so you have time to find parking. And you’ll need quarters to pay for the meters.

IOLANI PALACE ADMISSIONS

You will need to purchase your Iolani Palace tickets ahead of time. They no longer accept walk-up guests. Check Iolani Palace Tour Times .

WHAT TO WEAR

Because this is a historical place in Hawaii where kings and queens used to live, it’s important that you dress respectfully.

Image of a woman wearing a Hawaiian dress talking to a group of people sitting in chairs outside of Iolani Palace.

That means you shouldn’t show up in your beachwear. And you’ll need proper shoes/sandals.

I suggest wearing your luau clothes for the tour. That’s what we usually do and it shows respect as well as gets you in the spirit of celebrating Hawaiian history and culture.

WHAT NOT TO BRING

You cannot bring large bags or backpacks. They do have lockers available if you need to store something. I’d suggest using the lockers over keeping bags in your car.

Image of a set of blue lockers inside the barrack courtyard at Iolani Palace.

It’s right by the check-in area as well as the gift shop, so it makes an easy first and last stop.

What is the Iolani Palace Tour Like?

I always recommend that people do a docent-led tour of Iolani Palace. I’ve done the audio tours in the past and it’s just not the same.

Your first stop will be the Barracks, which is located to the left of the palace. Follow the signs and you’ll let them know that you have reservations for a tour.

Image of a stone barracks on a grassy lawn surrounded by palm trees and buildings.

If you have a large bag or backpack, you can take advantage of their lockers right behind the check-in area.

Next, you’ll head over to the “Tour Starts Here” sign and wait for them to let you up to the balcony.

Image of a boy wearing an aloha shirt sitting in a chair with blue booties over his shoes.

Once you get up there, you’ll be asked to put on shoe coverings to protect the palace floors. They even have kid sizes!

Then, you’ll get a quick briefing on expectations and how to be respectful inside the palace. And you’ll meet your docent tour guide.

We entered the main level and stood in a semi-circle at the bottom of the staircase. Our guide showed us the paintings of the monarchs that hang in the foyer.

She told us a lot about how the palace came to be and how King David Kalakaua was inspired by European royalty as he created this palace.

Image of a royal dining room including a throne chair for the king.

We also heard about all the fun palace parties! The king was known to throw lavish parties with an extensive dinner menu.

He was so well-known and respected that leaders from all over the world sent him their portraits for him to hang in the palace.

The staircases at Iolani Palace are simply stunning. We were allowed to hold onto the railing, which is the only thing we were permitted to touch in the palace.

Image of two women standing along the railing of a gorgeous wooden staircase at Iolani Palace.

Upstairs, we entered the ballroom and throne room. Some of the monarchs’ royal clothing was on display and they were gorgeous pieces!

Image of a glass case with crowns in it and royal thrones in the background.

We also saw their crowns and swords. And we learned about the Hawaiian kahilis that were placed by the throne.

Image of an ornate coronation outfit for King Kalakaua of Hawaii.

Our guide shared stories about what the royal balls were like and how the king would dance with every single woman in attendance.

Image of a wooden cabinet filled with knick knacks.

One really crazy thing about Iolani Palace is that after the United States overthrew the Hawaiian government, they sold off all the furniture and items in the palace.

These items ended up all over the world and they are slowly making their way back to the palace.

Image of a royal bedroom at Iolani Palace on Oahu Hawaii.

We also saw the royal bedrooms for the king and queen. These rooms were so massive that the beds look tiny in comparison.

Another cool thing about Iolani Palace is that they had telephones in a few of the rooms.

Image of a unique yellow chair with sheet music on it.

And we also got to see the music room. Many members of the Hawaiian royal family were also accomplished musicians.

But one of the most moving parts of the Iolani Palace tour was seeing the room where Queen Liliuokalani was imprisoned for 8 months after the overthrow of the government.

She spent that time working on a stunning quilt that’s on display.

Image of a white feather ballgown and a peacock feather ballgown at Iolani Palace in Honolulu.

As we walked through the rooms, we also saw a few more of the gorgeous ballgowns worn by Hawaiian royalty. These were replicas made by local designers.

My favorite was the peacock dress. The colors were so vibrant and it must have been a total showstopper!

Basement Level

The basement level was where the tour ended and we were invited to check out the displays on our own time.

Image of a wooden kitchen with lots of cups on shelves.

We saw the kitchen area where the staff prepped all the royal food and sent them up through the dumbwaiter.

Image of a stand up Hawaiian history exhibits inside the basement at Iolani Palace.

There were also some great displays about Hawaiian history and stories.

And there were a few rooms with more artifacts and royal items on display.

Video Presentation

After the tour, we were invited to head to the Hale Keaka Kahiko video theater to check out the film about the palace.

Image of a sign and brown door at Iolani Palace.

We didn’t have enough time on our parking meter to do this, but it looked interesting!

Iolani Palace Gift Shop

We always joke that we haven’t met a gift shop we didn’t like. And that’s true for the Iolani Palace gift shop.

Image of a bookshelf filled with Hawaiian books.

It was primarily books about Hawaiian history, culture, and the royal family. They also had some kids’ books.

And if you’re into music, they had CDs as well as the Queen’s songbook, which looked really cool.

Finally, while it’s not actually inside the gift shop, there is a souvenir penny machine in the courtyard outside of the gift shop.

How to Prepare for Your Visit to Iolani Palace

I think Iolani Palace is one of the places that you really need to know its significance before you visit in order to fully appreciate it.

Hawaii’s Story by Hawaii’s Queen

I read this book as a teenager and it was my first “lightbulb moment” about how Hawaii eventually became a state.

iolani palace docent tour

It’s written by Queen Liliuokalani, the last queen of Hawaii and it fully talks about what was going on during annexation and the whole series of events that led to the overthrow of the Hawaiian government.

I highly, highly recommend this book if you’re interested in history. Check prices and availability .

The Last Princess

If you’re visiting Iolani Palace with kids, I suggest grabbing a copy of The Last Princess . It’s the story of Princess Kaiulani, who was the last princess of Hawaii.

iolani palace docent tour

It’s a picture book that shows what it was like to grow up in the palace and go to London to finish her education. It also shares the story of Hawaii’s annexation in an easy-to-follow way. And it highlights how she advocated for her people.

This was one of my favorite books as a child. Check prices and availability .

One of the easiest things you can do before visiting Iolani Palace is listening to the song Aloha Oe. Yes, it’s featured in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch , but it was actually written by Queen Liliuokalani.

Even if you listen to it in your car before you head in, it’s worth it. You’ll feel her emotions and it will put you in the right mindset for your tour.

Visiting Iolani Palace with Kids

I admit that I was a little hesitant to bring my 5-year-old to Iolani Palace because I wasn’t sure about his attention span.

There was some mention somewhere in my confirmation email that they might ask unruly kids to leave and that made me panic just a little.

Image of a boy looking at a patchwork quilt that is in a glass case.

I think the main issue is that you aren’t allowed to touch anything at the palace except for the handrails on the stairs.

So, I think that’s important to keep in mind. It’s also a sacred place and most people stay quiet except to ask questions.

All that said, I think it’s a really great place to bring kids. My 5-year-old was actually really engaged with the stories and everything our docent talked about. And he thought it was cool being inside a palace for the first time.

There’s a nice grassy area outside where kids can run around and burn off energy. And you might want to promise them pool time afterward (that’s what we did)!

Where Else to Learn About Hawaiian History

Bishop museum.

One of the best museums in Hawaii is the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. They have an extensive collection of Hawaiian artifacts and cool exhibit areas.

Check out this honest review of the Bishop Museum in Hawaii by top Hawaii blog Hawaii Travel with Kids. Image of the interior of the museum with hanging sea life and museum corridors.

They also have rotating featured exhibits that are pretty amazing. This year, they had one that focused on contemporary street art and another that was all about Polynesian tattoos.

Check out my full post about Bishop Museum with kids .

QUEEN EMMA SUMMER PALACE

The Queen Emma Summer Palace is another cool historical place in Hawaii. This was the summer home for Queen Emma of Hawaii from 1857 to 1885, her husband King Kamehameha IV, and their son, Prince Albert Edward.

Honolulu, Hawaii-September 2015: Sign outside the Queen Emma Summer Palace museum and gift shop, a National Historic Site in Honolulu.

They offer self-guided tours as well as docent-led tours where you can learn more about the royal family of Hawaii.

POLYNESIAN CULTURAL CENTER

I almost want to put an asterisk by this one because they cover several Polynesian cultures and the education component is…a bit slanted.

Read this full guide to the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawai by top Hawaii blog Hawaii Travel with Kids. Image of two boys posing at the Polynesian Cultural Center entrance with tikis.

But, if you can handle the corny jokes, they do offer some cool hands-on activities like throwing a fishing net, learning hula dancing, etc. Read my full guide to the Polynesian Cultural Center .

HONOLULU — The docent at Iolani Palace stands near the 23-karat gold-leaf thrones and asks visitors to “hear” the Royal Hawaiian Band playing on the lanai and “see” the ladies in their ball gowns as they are twirled around the room by their men.

The Throne Room — with its imaginary ball hosted by Hawaii’s monarch from more than a century ago, King David Kalakaua — is the last stop on the tour of the only royal palace on American soil.

“The king loved to dance and danced with every woman at the ball,” the docent, Hokulani, says.

He also loved roses, she said, painting a vivid picture of a room decorated with roses and fragrant maile leaves, a vine that grows in Hawaii’s mountain areas.

The drapes and the carpet are dark red, and the seats of the thrones also are red, although the fabric has faded over the years. “The fabric won’t ever be changed because Hawaiians believe that mana (spiritual power) lives in the fabric,” Hokulani says.

The palace, described as “American Florentine” style, was completed in 1882 at a cost of $360,000. Much of the furniture, in the American Gothic style, was part of a 225-piece order from the company that made furniture for the White House, the guide says.

Electricity replaced the original gas lights after Kalakaua, who reigned from 1874-1891, visited Thomas Edison in New York City, she says. “Iolani Palace had electricity before the White House.”

After watching a 15-minute video in Iolani Barracks on the palace grounds, visitors place cloth “booties” over their shoes for the 45-minute tours conducted by volunteers from the Friends of Iolani Palace, the nonprofit organization that operates the state-owned building.

The highly polished floors are made of fir, a soft wood that is easily damaged, the docent explains. The visitors also are told to not sit on the furniture, not to bring candy or gum into the palace or take any photographs.

Entering the main floor of the palace, visitors first see the grand staircase, made of koa, a prized native hardwood.

Place settings of the original china and crystal adorn the table in the adjoining dining room, where author Robert Louis Stevenson was a guest several times.

Hokulani urges visitors to use their imagination in the Gold Room, where the king and family members or guests would enjoy music. The room is sparsely furnished and the gold carpet and drapes that once adorned the room have never been retrieved.

Much of the furnishings were sold by the provisional government following the 1893 overthrow of the last Hawaiian monarch, Queen Liliuokalani, who succeeded her brother Kalakaua following his death in 1891. A worldwide search has brought many of the furnishings and artifacts back to the palace.

On the palace’s second floor, visitors see the sparsely furnished room where Liliuokalani was imprisoned for eight months after being convicted of treason for having knowledge of a plot to restore her to the throne.

In the palace basement are re-creations of the chamberlain’s office and kitchen, along with galleries displaying jewel-encrusted crowns of Kalakaua and his queen and other royal artifacts. A mini-museum of royal artifacts is on loan from Bishop Museum, named for Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the great-granddaughter and last royal descendant of King Kamehameha the Great, who united the Hawaiian islands in 1810 and ruled until his death in 1819.

A Moscow Free Walking Tour of the Iconic Red Square

Updated March 10th, 2020

This post might contain affiliate links. That means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, if you buy through my site. I appreciate your support of my site.

No visit to Moscow, Russia is complete unless you take a walk around the famous Red Square and see the iconic sights of the city. One of the best ways to see all the famous landmarks in Moscow and learn a little something about them too is on a free Moscow walking tour through the Red Square.

Continue reading for a sneak peek at what you will see on your free tour in Moscow and for tips on both the tour and visiting the sights. Make sure to save some time during your trip to go inside of the magnificent buildings because you will not be going in the buildings during the tour.

The State Historical Museum

Moscow State Historical Museum

The Moscow free walking tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum . You can’t miss this massive red building. The museum’s interior is almost as spectacular as the artifacts you can see within. Read my post dedicated to the museum here to find out more on what you can see and tips for visiting. Admission is free with the Moscow City Pass .

The Kremlin

The Moscow Kremlin

Behind the walls of the Kremlin lie the working offices of Russian’s government and president. When visiting the Kremlin you can see the Armory Chamber, Cathedral Square, the Patriach’s Palace and many more cathedrals. You definitely want to buy tickets ahead of time so you avoid the long-lines. You can get free admission with the Moscow City Pass . It’s also worth it to take a guided tour if you don’t speak Russian so you have more of an understanding of what you are seeing.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

Moscow's St. Basil's Cathedral

If asked to conquer up an image of Moscow, St. Basil’s Cathedral might just be the most likely image you picture. The cathedral has a museum that you can visit at a later time. You can buy tickets at the ticket kiosk outside the cathedral or receive free admission with the Moscow City Pass .

Moskva River

Moskva River

Next up on the tour is the Moskva River which runs through the center of Moscow. A cruise on the Moskva River is a great way to see the city from a different perspective.

GUM Shopping Mall

Who would think a mall would be one of Moscow’s most well-known attractions? GUM shopping mall across from the Kremlin makes up one of the four sides of the Red Square. The stores might be a bit too pricey for shopping, but the gorgeous interior is worth a visit. If that doesn’t convince you, the mall has some of the best ice cream! GUM is the only building you go inside during the free walking tour. There are pay bathrooms you can use while you have a few minutes of free time.

Kazan Cathedral

Moscow Kazan Cathedral

Located on the northeast corner of the Red Square, the Kazan Cathedral is another impressive dome-shaped building in Moscow that is also an active place of worship. Entering the cathedral is allowed, but remember to be respectful if people are worshipping.

Bolshoi Theater

Moscow Bolshoi Theater

Contrary to the previous buildings, the Bolshoi Theater isn’t along one of the four sides of the Red Square. Located a few minutes away, the theater is one of the best theaters in the world. Make sure to come back for a guided tour of the inside or make reservations far ahead of time to attend a ballet or opera.

Alexander Gardens

Moscow Alexander Gardens

The tour ends near the Alexander Gardens , a free public park located along the western Kremlin walls. The garden’s green lawns, sculptures and water fountains offer a nice place to take a stroll or relax a bit after some busy sightseeing.

Moscow Red Square

You can visit all these sites on your own, but the best part of doing the Moscow free tour is that you learn more information and have the potential to meet new people!

During my tour I started to talk to a woman from Malaysia and she invited me to join her and her friends for a Russian meal afterwards. It’s these little impromptu meetings and opportunities that I love most about traveling and add more to the sightseeing experience. While I was a little hesitant about going to the tour myself I told myself it would be a great opportunity to possibly meet new people. I love when things work out like that!

If you have already seen the iconic sights of the Red Square and are looking for other things to do in Moscow check out my What to Do in Moscow post that gives more off-the beaten track things to do in Moscow!

Moscow Free Walking Tour Visiting Information

Moscow Free Walking Tours

How to Get There

The Moscow Free Walking Tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum (a large red building). The website shows a map with the exact meeting point.

To get to the red square area you can take the blue 3 metro line to the Ploshchad Revolyutsii stop, or the green 2 line to the Teatralnaya station or the red 1 line to the Okhotny Ryad station. For more on how to use the metro read my Moscow Metro Guide .

Tours every day at 10:30am – 1pm in English

If you need a toilet before the start of the tour the Okhotny Ryad and GUM shopping malls are both close to the start of the tour. You will need to pay to use the toilets. There is a quick break mid-way through the tour at the GUM shopping mall where you can use the toilet if needed.

During the mid-way break in the tour you can buy some ice cream at the GUM shopping mall. There aren’t many other options or time for anything else. After the tour there are a lot of restaurants in the area. There are a couple of Varenichnaya №1 locations nearby if you would like some authentic Russian food. Their speciality is Russian dumplings. Another classic choice nearby is Grand Cafe Dr. Jhivago. While you can try traditional Russian foods like borscht and Olivier Salad, you may need a reservation. GUM has several restaurants, including a couple of buffets upstairs.

Recommendations

While I would start off your visit to Moscow with a tour of the Red Square, make sure to come back to each place to tour the inside. If you are visiting several sights consider buying the Moscow City Pass  to save money on admissions.

Other Tour Options

Another company  Moscow Free Tour  does a similar free walking tour in the Red Square. Check the site for the details on the starting point and times. If you prefer a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to St. Basil’s Cathedral included check out this tour . For a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to the Kremlin included you may want to take this tour or this one . Even if you don’t typically take tours, I would recommend taking tours as much as possible in Moscow. Many people do not speak English and most information is not in English either.

Where to Stay in Moscow

Find somewhere to stay in Moscow near the Red Square so you are convenient to all the sights!

You have highlighted all the main sights around and in the Red Square indeed! I have visited Moscow in winter and the atmosphere was magical…even though it was cold 🙂 I’m looking forward to visiting in summer too!

Yes, there is a magical feel during the winter. I have to say I prefer the warmer, brighter summers though 🙂

I am planning to go to Moscow and St. Petersburg this year so reading this was very helpful. I would love to do the walking tour! What time of year did you do it? I am planning to go in August as I really can’t stand the cold 😀 Do you think August might be a good time to visit Moscow? Thank you so much for your information!

I did the walking tour in September. July and August are the best times to visit Moscow in my opinion, so you are going at a great time! I lived in Moscow for a year so I have a lot of posts about Moscow and a couple for St. Petersburg too. I’m a huge fan of taking free walking tours whenever my husband and I travel. We learn more about the history from the local’s perspective. Your walking tour in Moscow looks fun. The St. Basil’s Cathedral is beautiful and would love to see it. Thanks for sharing the must-see places in Moscow!

I’m a big fan of free walking tours too! I completely agree that you get a good perspective and introduction to the history of the city.

I would love to take the walking tour to get a good coverage of the area! The tip about paying for the bathrooms is great. That’s something I didn’t realize when I went to Europe for the first time from the US.

I always find it annoying paying for bathrooms in Europe!

I visited Moscow in June this year for the World Cup and I loved it. St. Basil’s Cathedral was the highlight for me, it’s such an impressive piece of architecture. I would’ve liked to visit more of Russia but maybe next time!

I really enjoyed Moscow during the World Cup too. The city was much livelier than usual!

' src=

I have been to St. Petersburg but never to Moscow. I think that these kind of tours are very useful to gather many information but I second your suggestion to visit the palaces inside as they have stunning interior decor and art treasures.

Yes, I think both going on tours and getting an overview and touring the inside of places are good to do.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
