Sandemans London Tours

sandeman free tour london

London is a big city, there’s so much to see and do, it can be overwhelming! Where to start? Why not try a Sandemans New Europe Tour? The Sandemans London free walking tour is a great way to get a feel of the city, hear some history and stories. The free tours really help you to ‘find your feet’ in a new city. And if that whets your appetite, there are a number of other tours, which focus on a subject, that with a small fee you can also do.

The Sandemans London Walking Tours are run by local self-employed guides. These freelance guides each add their own personal flare, so no tour is ever the same! Although each guide will give you history and stories on the tours, each guide has their own preferences and style. Each tour is unique and personal. And some may be longer than the guide time – it can depend on how many questions everyone has!

So, how can these guides make money on a free tour? It’s simple, they work for tips. So if at the end of the tour you are happy with their service, give them what you can spare. But the guides will never pressure you for tips, they rely on your kindness.

And if the free tour leaves you wanting more there are six other tours that have a small fee available. Your guide will be more than happy to sell you tickets! Another bonus is that you can purchase tickets for other London attractions with a discounted rate and skip the lines such as the Tower of London and the London Eye. Ask your guide (or visit the website) for details.

Sandeman's Free Walking Tour of Royal London

Signed up for the Sandeman's Free Walking Tour in London on a Saturday in June not realizing it was another celebration day of the Queen's 90th birthday. As it happened, our guide, Jake, found us a good spot to watch the Royal Family on the palace balcony without the hassle of the huge crowd. The entire tour was informative and enjoyable; Jake was friendly and very entertaining. Totally endorse the concept of paying for value received. This tour led me to take two other Sandeman's tours in Prague.

Ollie was a brilliant tour guide! A bit nuts, but in a good way :) He kept us entertained and laughing throughout. Also remembered the names of the people on his tour, which added a nice personal touch.

We went on an afternoon tour with Trevor. He was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. We had a large group, and he handled it well. The stories he told about the city were interesting and pretty funny. I recommend this tour as an introduction to London.

Ivo did a great job! He had enthusiasm for the history of London, which made for a very interesting, memorable tour! He was also very engaging and able to answer any questions we had about the history and cool places to visit. DEFINITELY worth the 3 hours, even if you've been to or are from London. There were two people on the tour who were actually from London and had been living there for years, and they even enjoyed the tour.

My first Sandeman tour, but it won't be my last. Our guide Angus was great and we learned so many interesting facts and saw the changing of the guards from a much better spot than what we would have aimed for on our own. He has the timing down perfectly...you will cover a lot of ground on this tour, make sure to put your walking shoes on and keep up! Great fun for everyone, thank you!

I had one day in London and, not wanting to spend it in museums, went on Angus' Old City Tour in the morning, and enjoyed it so much I went on his Alternative London Tour in the afternoon. A day well-spent! Angus was one of the most knowledgeable and entertaining guides I've ever had, mixing basic London history and architecture with colorful and funny anecdotes. (Especially the ones about Michael Fagan breaking into Buckingham Palace and Lord Nelson's ignominious return to England). Rather than provide a staid, neutral recitation of the facts, Angus wasn't afraid to share his opinions, though he did so appropriately and articulately. And despite a bike race blocking the Old City route, he expertly shepherded our large group from one overcrowded site to another like a pro. The Alternative London tour brought me to nooks of the city I never would have found on my own and I must have taken over 200 pictures. When it comes to tours of London, Angus wrote the book--literally, he helps write the examination for London tour guides, so he knows of what he speaks.

Had Alexis for the old London tour and he was AMAZING! Highlight of the trip! Learned so much and took us down very cool quiet, hard to find areas

When you have a day layover, there is so many sights to see when traveling. I remember to participate a tour when I visit Munich, so that we could see a good amount of sites. We did free tour with Dave. He was super great! When we did this tour it was on and off raining. So these tours happen rain or shine. The tour was focused on the castle aka the royal tour. We were taken to many photo spots and I love all the context we get. Dave the tour guide was so knowledgeable and super kind. On these tour he tells your tips on how to navigate around the city and etiquette. He was willing to give recommendations and directions when the tour ends too. Remember that these tours had a lot of research done and that you should tip as much you think it is worth. These tours are such worth it as they can build some structure on the trip. I look forward booking with Sandman's tour company again. :)

Jake was our tour guide during our 3 hour walking tour. Like other Sandeman's guides, he mixed both important history and comedy, which kept my husband's attention because he is not a fan of tours! We hit all of the major touristy spots in London and got a lot of exercise, to boot. During Sandeman's tours, I have learned so much about the areas that otherwise I would have never heard. Yes, you can go online to learn the history, but you will not learn the little tidbits about areas or key figures. I highly recommend any tours with Sandeman's. And like many others have mentioned, be sure to tip well. I saw some people tip 5 pounds for the long tour--give me a break! He gave up several hours to teach you!

Just do it. Don't ask questions. Well ask one question, and that is to request Angus as a guide. I had VERY limited time to sight see in the middle of all my work meetings, and this 3hr tour hit all of the main hot spots and then some. SUCH A GREAT USE OF TIME. It is technically free, but you will feel 100% compelled to tip generously when it is done. I loved the kooky stories and the unique items shown such as the Banksy street art and the Harry potter alley :)

I love the Sandeman's tours! We have done them in Brussels, Amsterdam, and London and they have always been great! In London, we did 2 separate tours, the free 2.5 hour walking tour (just FYI make sure to tip at the end) and the Old City Tour which lasted about 3-3.5 hours. The free walking tour was a great introduction to the city and meets in Covent Garden, which is centrally located on several underground lines. We went through Westminster, Trafalgar Square, and past the National Gallery. We also walked past St. Jame's Palace and Buckingham Palace and through St. James Park. We saw the Horse Guards Parade and witnessed the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. We saw Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, and the Churchill War Rooms. Our guide was originally from Portugal but really knew his London history and culture after living there for 12 years. He definitely made the tour entertaining and informative. The Old City Tour focused on the City of London (which is actually incredibly small) and its history. We began in Covent Garden and ended at the Tower of London. In between we saw the tower bridge, London Bridge (it's not impressive actually), Big Ben, St. Paul's Cathedral, The Church of the Knights Templar, Mansion House, the Bank of England, the Royal Exchange, the WWII Blitz area, where the fire of London began, and the barristers courts. We also saw the old jail and the current courthouse. Our tour guide was actually originally from Canada and is a history teacher in London. He was very entertaining, perhaps less theatrical than our first guide, but more historically informed. I believe the tickets were 12 or 15 pounds each. Sandeman's is a great company and I highly recommend all of their tours in the cities they have them in!

I went on a tour with Evo in December of 2018. My best friend and I LOVED the experience, Evo in was very entertaining and knowledgeable, and this was a great way to get a lay of the land in a city/country we had never been to before. It's 2 years later and I still remember the tour. Thanks for the great memories.

Went on the New London Free Tour on March 4, 2018 with David. In a word - Awesome! Not only did he take us around the sites giving a detailed and unique history of many of the major historic sites in this city but was also there to answer questions regarding best places to eat local and other bits of trivia. We love our walking tours taking them all over the globe from Seattle, USA, New York, Florence, Rome, etc... David and Sandemans deserve every bit of this rating. When in London find out why.

Was in London and have done many of this companies free tours. This was, like all of them, fabulous! My guide was Charlotte! We learned a lot, had fun, and got acquainted with the city. It's a wonderful tour to do on your first day as you can see what is worth going back to! The guide can also point you in the direction of great restaurants, hidden attractions etc. Can't wait for the next city to tour!

I did the free walking tour with Becky and it was superb! Becky has hilarious, and extremely informative. Not only did she provide us with an amazingly rich history of London she also made it a priority to make sure we bonded as a group, ensuring we walked away with new friends!

Took the British museum tour with Alicia. I was the only one in the group, so got the one on one treatment. She was the best!!!! Knowledgeable, witty, great conversationalist and beautiful!!!! Highly recommend her and the tour.

Sandeman's New London Tours

The River Thames

Want a great way to experience London , whether you’re a first-visit tourist or a veteran? Check out Sandeman’s New London Tours . The company offers a wide range of walking tours of the city, given by enthusiastic young tour guides (many of them underemployed actors from London’s many theatres) who have an insider’s knowledge of the vast city.

Their hallmark tour is the New London Free Tour –yes, you read that right, it is free. This tour begins every day of the week at 11:00 a.m. at Hyde Park , and winds its way through the city of Westminster, where you will see Parliament and Westminster Abbey , and meet some of the most impressive personalities of the British Empire, from Edward the Confessor to Winston Churchill. What’s the catch? There is none, honestly! If you are happy with the tour, you may give your expert guide a generous tip.

Clearly, Sandeman hopes that you’ll be thrilled enough by your free tour to book further excursions with their company. They offer a great variety of thematic tours of the Old City, pub crawls in various regions, and an engaging mix of seasonal tours. During the Halloween season, for example, they featured a Grim Reaper Tour that retraced the trail of Jack the Ripper and an overview of a darker London that was home of the world’s first psychiatric hospital, Traitor’s Gate , and the haunted hideaways of the East End . Fees for these tours are reasonable, generally averaging about 14 pounds a head.

Sandeman’s is also more than accommodating in the area of private tours. If you have a particular area or interest, let them know and they will develop a unique tour to suit the needs of your group. Whether you are interested in medieval history or just want someone to show you the best shopping sites in town, Sandeman can help you make the most of your London visit.

Contact them at +49 30 5105 0030 or visit their website.

  16. Tipping amount for free or inexpensive walking tours?

From my understanding, the guide has to pay if you don't tip. In London for a good tour, I'd probably tip £9, as that's the cost of a London Walks tour, and those have all been good. (Although in general I do try to follow the local tipping culture and would not feel required to tip if the tour were not good.) Report inappropriate content.
