A double decker bus carrying dozens of British pupils was involved in a horror crash after a lorry driver 'distracted by his sat nav' smashed into them.

The group of around 60 children from Ysgol Llanhari, in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, were travelling in southern Germany while on their way to a ski resort in Austria. Images from the scene show the double decker bus badly damaged with shards of glass and debris from the vehicle stretching more than 100metres.

The school on Instagram revealed that no schoolchildren were injured in the collision. It stated: "Everyone is fine - a huge thank you to the German emergency services. The resilience of our pupils is clear today."

Children, believed to be between the ages of 14 and 17, were heading on to Austria where they were going to continue their ski holiday when the accident happened. Local reports said they were on their way to Salzburg when the lorry cross onto the wrong side of the road and hit them.

The driver of the lorry was allegedly distracted by his navigation system before swerving onto the wrong side of the road, said the Landau police.

Images from the school’s Instagram also show children now tucking into food after they were taken to a nearby sports hall and were being looked after by emergency services.

One photo is captioned: “Food provided by the local fire department a huge thank you!” One person wrote: “Thank you from the heart for looking after them. We value all your care (…) A huge thank you to all that have helped and looked after them. They have been looked after so well. Safe journey.”

Another comment stated: "Thanks to all the teachers, emergency services who have been amazing to Georgie and all the other pupils on the bus." And a further read: "Thank you all for taking care of them and for doing such an amazing job. Glad everyone safe and well done to the bus driver not 1 child hurt."

Coach company Davey Travel Ltd said the crash happened on the B10 - a 190-mile federal highway between the state of Saarland and north-western Bavaria - near the Landau-Nord exit.

Landau police stated the lorry carrying tar was heading along the B10 towards Pirmasens when it hit the oncoming double-decker bus carrying the group of students at around 4:50am.

Reports have also stated that only the 53-year-old driver received slight injuries from the broken glass. An investigation into the actions of the driver of the truck has started, Landau Police Department confirmed.

2 Illinois teens dead after sledding at Colorado ski resort

FRISCO, Colo. (AP) — A community in Illinois is in mourning a day after two local teens were killed while sledding at a Colorado ski resort.

Paula Crane, superintendent of the Prairie Central school district in Fairbury, confirmed Monday that two students from Prairie Central High School died in a “tragic accident.”

She declined to identity them out of respect for their families. A local church will be offering counseling for any students or staff.

The two students, ages 18 and 17, had been on spring break.

The young men were riding in tandem down the halfpipe at Copper Mountain Ski Resort in Summit County when they launched off a large snowbank at the bottom, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say both teens then landed on hard ice and suffered blunt force trauma. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of the individuals involved in this tragic incident,” Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons said.

The teens’ bodies have been turned over to the county coroner’s office, which will determine the exact cause and manner of death.

Authorities did not release further details.

Copper Mountain Ski Resort, which lies roughly 75 miles (121 kilometers) west of Denver, is a popular draw for skiers and riders with over 2,500 acres (1,012 hectares) of high alpine terrain.

Blue Bell teen, La Salle College sophomore has passed away

Dylan Joseph Leskusky, a sophomore at La Salle College High School and a Blue Bell native, died on Thursday, February 15. He was 15 years old.

According to  a source shared  by a La Salle parent, the cause of death was a skiing accident.

Leskusky attended St. Helena’s grade school before transitioning to La Salle College, his obituary said.

He will be remembered for his huge smile, warm heart, amazing sense of humor, outgoing personality, and incredible ability to bring people together.   He loved playing golf, soccer, and basketball, was an avid Eagles and Sixers fan, enjoyed vacationing at the beach, staying up late playing video games, taking naps with his dog Toby by his side, and hanging out with his vast group of friends. He was affectionate and compassionate and never left the house without a huge hug followed by “I Love You Mom & Dad.”

My prayers are with the entire Leskusky family. I had the honor of teaching Dylan in freshman English class last year. I will remember his charming smile, genuine spirit and endearing personality. He was seemingly a friend to all his classmates, and it was clear he enjoyed being a part of the La Salle community. He will be missed.

A memorial gathering in his memory will take place on Saturday February 24, from 11:30am to 1:45pm, followed by his Memorial Mass beginning at 2:00pm at La Salle College High School, 8605 W Cheltenham Avenue, Wyndmoor. Interment will be private.

School bus carrying British children crashes with lorry on way to Alps

A bus full of Welsh school pupils crashed with a lorry on their way to a ski trip today.

The crash happened in Germany while the children were on their way to a ski resort in the Austrian Alps.

No children were injured in the accident, Ysgol Llanhari posted on their Instagram stories.

The school shared photos of the children eating meals provided by the local fire service while waiting for new transport after the crash.

They are due to spend a week in Austria over Easter having travelled from Pontyclun in south Wales.

The school’s Instagram story read: ‘Everyone is ok – a huge thank you to German emergency services. Our student resilience is clear today!’

One parent added: ‘Thank you all for taking care of them and for doing such an amazing job.

‘Glad everyone safe and well done to the bus driver not one child hurt.’

The school replied: ‘They’re doing us proud considering what’s a happened! Hoping to be on our way soon.’

The collision happened on the B10 highway leading from Saarland to Bavaria.

Dozens of children involved in crash on school trip

Welsh schoolchildren have been involved in a bus crash during a school ski trip to Austria. German media has reported that there was an accident near Landau, Germany, involving 63 young people on Tuesday morning.

It is understood that they were pupils from Ysgol Llanhari, in Rhondda Cynon Taf, who were travelling in southern Germany while on their way to Austria. Media organisation SWR reported the young people were "temporarily accommodated in a gymnasium" after the crash.

They said that the crash happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning and the crash involved a truck and the coach which was travelling in a different direction. It is reported that the two vehicles got too close to each other and brushed against each other. A report said: "Apparently the truck driver briefly looked at the navigation system and crossed the center line, according to an initial assessment by the police."

The bus driver was reported to have been slightly injured by broken glass, but there were no other injuries. According to police, a total of 73 people were on the bus, including teachers and carers.

A spokesperson for Rhondda Cynon Taf Council said: "The Council can confirm that all pupils and staff from Ysgol Llanhari are safe following a road traffic incident in southern Germany, and that nobody was injured. Local emergency services were involved as a precautionary measure and confirm that all is well.

"The group, who were on their way to a skiing holiday in Austria, was supported at a local hall while alternative travel arrangements were made. The coach company has arranged for two new buses to pick up the group so they can continue their journey and resume the ski trip.

“The headteacher of Ysgol Llanhari is in regular contact with the staff members who are accompanying the pupils on the trip and has provided several updates to parents and carers throughout the morning.

“Staff have reported that the local emergency services have been a fantastic help, and the school and Council would like to thank them for all they have done.."

Half term school ski trip ends in tragedy

Peter Rippington, 59, was killed when the coach veered off the A26 motorway near Chalons-en-Champagne before hitting a motorway safety barrier and rolling into a ditch, coming to rest on its side on the embankment.

Along with the four seriously injured, a total of 27 passengers were taken to hospitals in Reims and Chalons to be treated for injuries.

The school group from Alvechurch Middle School, Worcestershire, were travelling with school travel specialist Interski. As well as the teachers and pupils on board the coach, there were six Interski ski instructors.

The driver is due before a French court later today. Police suspect he either fell asleep at the wheel or was taken ill. The BBC has reported that the driver has tested negative for alcohol and drugs, and the coach’s electronic log book, which records the number of hours driven, showed nothing unusual.

Interski has extended its sympathies to those involved in “this tragic incident”, and has been helping repatriate the victims.

The British student killed in a huge avalanche in the Swiss Alps was on a school ski trip.

The 18-year-old was swept to his death on Tuesday with a classmate, who remains missing. They attended the Ecole d’Humanité, a boarding school in Hasliberg Goldern that charges £57,000 a year.

Driver to appear in French court over coach crash that killed teacher

The driver of a coach that crashed in northern France while bringing 29 British schoolchildren and their adult supervisors home from an Italian ski trip was due to appear in a French court on Monday.

The driver, whose name has not yet been released by the French authorities, was due before a judge in Châlons-en-Champagne pending further inquiries into the accident, which killed a teacher, Peter Rippington.

Eleven people remain in hospital following the crash near Reims early on Sunday .

The driver has been questioned about the crash since his release from hospital for treatment for minor injuries.

Initial tests showed the driver, who suffered only minor injuries, was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Police are believed to be investigating whether he might have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Six people were said to be seriously injured although their condition was not life-threatening, according to a local prosecutor investigating the crash. A 13-year-old was transferred to the Necker children's hospital in Paris for surgery.

Another driver and six ski instructors were also on the coach, which flipped over and came to rest at the bottom of an embankment on the A26 at Châlons-en-Champagne.

Tributes have been paid to 59-year-old Rippington, head of mathematics at Alvechurch middle school in Worcestershire, who died in the crash.

The school was open on Monday with pupils and adults being offered counselling. Police officers were on duty at all three entrances as pupils and parents arrived, some in tears. Dozens of bunches of flowers and notes of sympathy in memory of Rippington had been left around a flagpole inside the school grounds.

A photograph of the teacher with his wife Sharon had been placed near the tributes. She and their daughter Amy were injured in the crash. In a statement, the Rippington family said they were devastated, describing the 59-year-old as "a wonderful husband, father, son, brother, son-in-law, brother-in-law, uncle, friend and teacher".

Rippington was a "dedicated and inspirational teacher", Bryan Maybee, chairman of the school's governors, said in a statement read outside the school. "He will be so sadly missed by all those who knew him."

After confirming that staff and children who were well enough to travel arrived back from France late on Sunday night, he added: "We continue to wish for the swift recovery and safe return of those who are currently being treated for injuries abroad.

"The school is open today and I can reassure you that specialist support is in place for children and staff."

Rev David Martin, the rector of Alvechurch, said: "The church community are holding all those affected by yesterday's shocking crash in our prayers, especially Peter's family. Peter was very much part of the wider community in Alvechurch and was known and liked by many."

St. Laurence's Church in the village was open to give people an opportunity to say prayers and light candles for Rippington, he said.

Twenty-seven people were taken to two hospitals following the crash, with 22 of those said to have minor injuries.

Interski Snowsport School, the company that arranged the trip, said it was "saddened and distressed". In a statement, it offered its condolences to Rippington's family and friends and sympathy to those injured and others involved in the incident.

The bus was owned by Solus Coaches, which is based in Tamworth, Staffordshire, and was chartered by the ski company. "Our thoughts are with the bereaved, to whom we offer our sincere condolences," said a spokesman. "We are also obviously highly concerned for the welfare of the injured passengers and all others involved in this incident."

The Foreign Office is investigating the accident and providing consular assistance.

The driver of a coach which crashed in France with dozens of British schoolchildren on board has been found guilty of manslaughter.

Derek Thompson, 49, was driving the coach near Chalons-en-Champagne, 90 miles east of Paris, on 19 February 2012, when it crashed.

The 49 passengers on the bus were from Alvechurch School, near Birmingham, and they were returning from a skiing trip to the Alps.

One of the school's teachers, Peter Rippington, 59, was killed in the crash and many passengers, including children and ski instructors, were seriously injured.

Thompson was sentenced to six months in jail following the trial in France but this sentence was suspended for five years.

Steve Ratheram, 53, suffered nine spinal fractures, a fractured sternum, broken ribs and shoulder injuries in the crash and said he welcomed the conviction of Thompson.

The former ski instructor, and father-of-three from Yardley Wood, said: "My initial reaction is that while I welcome the conviction, the sentence seems very light bearing in mind the seriousness of what happened.

"It’s not really justice, although we will have to wait for the full judgement from the court. We all want to know what happened to cause the crash.

“Since the crash I’ve been back to hospital on countless occasions for further treatment and have had to get used to living with my injuries on a daily basis."

Clive Garner, head of international personal injury at Irwin Mitchell, which represents 25 of those injured in the crash, said many of those involved in the crash had been left with "serious and life-changing injuries" and that some would "never fully recover".

He added: "It is a relief to many of them to know that the criminal proceedings have been concluded and they are one important step closer to knowing exactly what caused the crash."

Mr Garner said the court had yet to release a full written judgement, which would explain the reasons behind Thompson's conviction and also give the victims "the answers (that they) both want and deserve".

The law firm is fighting tour company Interski over the crash but Mr Garner said Interski had previously denied liability on the basis that Thompson was not at fault.

He added that this view was "no longer tenable" and he was "anxious that liability is now admitted without further delay so that our clients can begin to move on with their lives".

Despite this, many of the passengers have already reached settlements or compensation deals, allowing them to pay for therapy and other aids to help them recover from their injuries.

Tragic litany of holiday disasters

Craig Norsworthy, 15, from Edinburgh, was killed when a coach carrying 38 youngsters careered off a road near Paris last August.

The driver, Adrian McDonald, was charged with involuntary manslaughter after allegedly falling asleep at the wheel.

1997, Alpine coach crash

Three children on a school trip to France were killed when their coach left a road near Albertville in the French Alps. Nichola Moore, 16, Robert Boardman, 14, and Keith Ridding, 14, were in a party of 16 pupils from St James high school in Bolton, Lancashire.

1996, rape and murder

Caroline Dickinson, a 13-year-old pupil at Launceston College in Cornwall, was raped and murdered in a Brittany youth hostel.

In 1999, her mother, Sue Dickinson, lost a claim for damages against Cornwall County Council after a court dismissed her case that teachers on the trip should have done more to protect her daughter.

1993, Lyme Bay drownings

Four teenagers lost their lives in 1993 when a school canoe trip off Lyme Regis, Dorset, went tragically wrong on March 22. A party of 23 children from Southway comprehensive in Plymouth was on an excursion to St Albans adventure training centre when the group was split up and blown out to sea.

The managing director of Active Learning and Leisure, Peter Kite, was jailed for three years for manslaughter. The company itself was convicted of corporate manslaughter and fined pound;60,000.

John Patten, education secretary at the time, introduced a four-point plan, which included a survey of activity centres, followed by Health and Safety Executive inspections, guidance for schools and councils, and changes in schools’ governing articles to make explicit the legal duty of care concerning health and safety. The regulation was enshrined in the Activity Centres Act 1995. The Act requires all providers of “high risk” adventurous activities for young pople under 18, whether for educational purposes or for activity holidays, to apply for a licence to run a commercial operation which is open to inspection.

1993, crash on the M40

A motorway accident which claimed the lives of 12 schoolchildren and a teacher from Hagley Roman Catholic high school in Stourbridge led to changes in

minibus regulations.

Seat belts were made compulsory on all school transport vehicles. Also, those who get their driving licence after January 1997 must take a special minibus test in order to drive one carrying schoolchildren.

“However, there is an exemption for volunteer drivers and it is currently not clear whether teachers driving on out-of-hours trips are covered,” said Kevin Clinton, Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents spokesman. There are still no regulations concerning the time teachers spend driving.

1988, Alpine fall in Austria

Four British teenagers from Altwood Church of England secondary school in Maidenhead, Berkshire, fell more than 250ft to their deaths while on a school trip in the Austrian Alps.

That year, new guidelines to safeguard pupils on school trips were issued by the National Association of Head Teachers and a revised version of the Department for Education and Employment booklet, Safety in Outdoor Pursuits, was issued.

1985, drownings at Land’s End

Four boys from Stoke Poges middle school, Buckinghamshire, drowned during a school trip to Land’s End when they were swept out to sea while exploring rocks.

Alec Askew, the headteacher, resigned after the tragedy.

An inquiry into the accident was highly critical of party leader Mr Askew and teacher, Robert Harrington, who also resigned.

The inquiry made 22 proposals for organising future trips. New safety guidelines from the National Association of Head Teachers were widely adopted by education authorities after the tragedy.

Guestbook and Outside Websites:

We are not allowed to reference other media sources with a guestbook or an obituary placed elsewhere when placing an obituary in print and online. We may place a website for a funeral home or a family email for contact instead; contact us with any questions regarding this matter.

Obituary Process:

Once your submission is completed, we will fax or email a proof for review prior to publication in the newspaper. This proof includes price and days the notice is scheduled to appear.

Please review the proof carefully. We must be notified of errors or changes before the notice appears in the Pioneer Press based on each day’s deadlines.

After publication, we will not be responsible for errors that may occur after final proofing.

Payment Procedure:

Pre-payment is required for all obituary notices prior to publication by the deadline specified below in our deadline schedule. Please call 651-228-5263 with your payment information after you have received the proof and approved its contents.

Credit Card: Payment accepted by phone only due to PCI (Payment Card Industry) regulations

EFT: Check by phone. Please provide your routing number and account number.

• The minimum charge is $162 for the first 10 lines.
• Every line after the first 10 is $12.20.
• If the ad is under 10 lines it will be charged the minimum rate of $162.
• On a second run date, the lines are $8.20 per line, starting w/ the first line.
• For example: if first run date was 20 lines the cost would be $164.
• Each photo published is $125 per day.
• For example: 2 photos in the paper on 2 days would be 4 photo charges at $500.

LOS ANGELES – A physician well-known in Los Angeles’ Russian community and her adult daughter were poisoned during a trip to Moscow last month, U.S. Embassy officials confirmed Wednesday, the latest in a string of poisoning cases that have sparked international interest.

Officials said Marina Kovalevsky, 49, and her daughter Yana, 26, were poisoned with thallium, an odorless, colorless toxin originally suspected in the death of a former Russian spy in London last year.

Their plight has roiled Los Angeles’ large community of Russian expatriates. The women, both American citizens who have lived in the Los Angeles area for more than 15 years, were expected home soon, family members said.

Russian officials told the Moscow news media investigators believed the pair were poisoned in an attempt to cover up the theft of their jewelry. However, family members who have been in contact with the women said they made no mention of any such theft.

The mother and daughter traveled to Moscow in mid-February to attend the wedding of a friend’s niece, said their cousin, Olga Tabarovskaya, and fell ill on Feb. 24. Tabarovskaya said she and other family members at first believed the women were suffering from food poisoning and were shocked when tests indicated thallium.

They had been staying at one of Moscow’s fanciest hotels.

“I think it’s an accident because I can’t imagine anything else. It’s really bizarre,” said Taba-rovskaya, a chiropractor who works in the same West Hollywood office as her cousin.

Tabarovskaya, who has spoken to her cousins several times since their poisoning, said the women were improving medically and sounded very excited to be coming home. Their symptoms included nausea, diarrhea, muscle weakness and paralysis. Family members said they were treated in Moscow with dialysis and a poison antidote called Prussian Blue.

The role of poison in Russia’s hard-edged political scene came to international prominence last year when former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko fell fatally ill in London. Litvinenko, a vocal critic of Russian leaders, died three weeks after being hospitalized with what doctors first suspected was thallium poisoning. Later tests indicated he had suffered a lethal dose of polonium-210 radiation poisoning.

Those who know Kovalevsky said they find it impossible to believe she or her daughter could have been a target.

Victoria Wexley, who sits on the board of the Russian American Medical Association with Kovalevsky, said while many Russians speak out on a variety of subjects, Kovalevsky did not.

“It does sound like and look like she was poisoned,” she said. “Whether it was intentional because of her involvement in politics, I doubt that.” Lyubov Burban, who lives in Los Angeles, said she believes Kovalevsky was poisoned accidentally.

Burban, a Ukrainian immigrant, said she and many others who left the former Soviet Union remain fearful of their native countries. Burban’s son was killed in 1992 when Chechen rebels seized a Moscow theater and Russian security personnel sprayed potent gas into the auditorium before storming the building.
