There’s no denying that Sedona, Arizona, has a pull, an aura, an appeal that sets it apart from other tourist destinations. For many people, that draw goes beyond the gorgeous red rock views and countless recreational opportunities to another famous attribute: the centers of energy known as vortexes.

For decades, Sedona has been recognized as a destination rich with vortexes (also called the more correct term vortices) . Visitors travel from all over the world to experience the vortexes’ benefits — variously described as an uplifting feeling, a sensation of recharge, and a satisfying calmness.

The concept of vortex energy in Sedona is a belief held by many visitors and residents alike. These alleged energy centers are said to create a feeling of heightened spirituality, peace, and healing. While not scientifically proven, the serene landscapes and spiritual experiences in Sedona continue to attract those of us who are seeking unique and mystical energies.

Over the years, I have made dozens of trips to Sedona, and despite the ever-growing crowds and the often-clogged traffic, I always want to return. For me, it’s mostly about the stellar hiking and spectacular views , but who knows? It might also be the power of those vortexes pulling me back.

Based on my visits to all of the well-known vortexes as well as information from Sedona’s tourism website , here is everything you need to know about a visit to the Sedona vortexes.

6 Sedona Vortex Sites to See and Things To Know Before Visiting

What are the vortexes.

The Visit Sedona website describes the vortexes as “swirling centers of energy that are conducive to healing, meditation, and self-exploration.” It adds that the vortex sites “are places where the earth seems especially alive with energy.”

The vortex sites are identified as spots of either upflow, inflow, or a combination of both.

Upflow spots — found at mountaintops, mesas, or scenic overlooks — are locations where the energy is flowing upward out of the earth and are said to create positive, uplifting, and rejuvenating sensations.

Inflow sites feature energy flowing inward to the earth and are typically found in canyons, caves, valleys, and low-lying areas. The inflow sites are known to have a calming effect and are good spots for introspection and meditation.

Pro Tip: More information about the science of vortexes can be found on the GoLakeHavasu website or in the book Scientific Vortex Information by Pete A Sanders Jr.

Where Are They Located?

The vortexes are spread all over the Sedona area, from West Sedona to the Village of Oak Creek to the Oak Creek Canyon area. Because Sedona is a relatively small town of about 10,000, the well-known vortexes are all fairly close to one another. A map is available on this PDF .

Here are four of the most famous Sedona vortexes.

The vortex at Boynton Canyon in Sedona, Arizona.

1. Boynton Canyon

For me, a trek through Boynton Canyon encapsulates the best of Sedona, as it passes by a series of amazing red-rock buttes before heading up a lovely forested box canyon.

On my recent January hike, the canyon felt like a secret garden, with faded gold and pink leaves still clinging to tree branches and bluebirds flitting from tree to tree. The actual vortex site is stunning, with canyon walls rising all around.

The Boynton Canyon hike is known as a combination inflow/upflow site. Note that while the Coconino Forest website rates the hike as an easy 5-mile round-trip, my cell phone clocked it at closer to 6.5 miles round-trip. The last half-mile or so is more on the strenuous side, with some scrambling up rocks required in the final ascent. The hike takes about 2 to 3 hours.

Boynton Canyon is located in West Sedona and can be reached by taking Dry Creek Road off Highway 89A. Parking is available in a trailhead lot with a fee . Pit toilets are available at the trailhead.

Pro Tip: For guests at the nearby upscale Enchantment Resort , a spur trail is available from the resort to the Boynton Canyon Trail.

2. Sedona Airport Loop

For a pure upflow experience, the Sedona Airport Loop is located right in the middle of Sedona, off Highway 89A and Airport Road. You will find the trailhead about a half-mile up the steep Airport Road.

The trail circles the upper slope of Airport Mesa (Table Top Mountain), offering great red rock views. It begins as a mostly level hike and then transitions to a moderate climb. The vortex site can be found on the main overlook, accessed via the half-mile Table Top Trail spur. The loop, including the spur, totals about 4.3 miles and takes about 2.5 hours to complete.

Pro Tip: For great views without the hike, the Sedona Airport Overlook offers a parking area, with a small fee, where you can take in a panorama of all of Sedona.

Bell Rock in Sedona, Arizona.

3. Bell Rock

Another pure upflow experience is available at Bell Rock — the massive bell-shaped red butte visible all over the Village of Oak Creek. The 3.6-mile Bell Rock Pathway offers close-up views of the horizontal layers that make up the rock formation.

Bell Rock’s strongest vortex energy is said to be felt on the butte’s north slope. Experts advise that it is not necessary to get to the top of Bell Rock to feel the vortex energy, and most people feel uplifting experiences on the first or second level. Visit Sedona suggests, “Follow trails up Bell Rock to the level that feels right for you.” The trail is considered easy to moderate and should take about 2.5 hours to complete.

Parking is available at North and South Trailheads, and a Red Rock Pass is required for parking at both.

Cathedral Rock in Sedona, Arizona.

4. Cathedral Rock

There are many ways to access Cathedral Rock, the iconic grouping of rock buttes and spires seen all over Sedona. To take in the vortexes, Visit Sedona suggests either the saddle of Cathedral Rock for an upflow/inflow combination or the inflow spot at the Red Rock Crossing.

The saddle of the soaring cathedral-like rock spires is accessible along the Cathedral Rock Trail , deemed “more a rock climb than a hike” by the Coconino National Forest’s website. Although the hike is relatively short at about 1.5 miles round-trip, it is steep and difficult in places, including a scramble up a rock cleft with a few toeholds notched into the rock. Still, the views at the top are splendid. The hike can be accessed off Highway 179 and Back O’ Beyond Road.

Another vortex option at Cathedral Rock is available at the inflow spot at the Red Rock Crossing , which can be accessed via Highway 89A and the Upper Red Rock Loop Road. Follow signs to the Red Rock Crossing/Crescent Moon Day Use Area. Parking is available for a fee.

5. Chapel of the Holy Cross

Many say the Chapel of the Holy Cross Vortex is the strongest Sedona vortex experience of them all. It’s actually a small chapel built into the beautiful Sedona red rocks. If you’re an architecture lover, the Chapel of the Holy Cross might just be the most interesting building in all of Sedona.

Many people report a sense of personal growth and joy which aims to make a deep connection to the spirit and Earth’s energy. The electromagnetic vortex energy of this Sedona vortex also emits love, harmony, and oneness to unify all that visit. Apart from reflection, the awesome panorama and the towering cross offer incredible photo opportunities in all directions.

6. Courthouse Butte Vortex

Located just east of Bell Rock Vortex and north of the Village of Oak Creek, Courthouse Butte Vortex is known to locals as the spot for deep transformation and spiritual growth. The powerful vortex energy felt at this vortex site is grounding, healing, and extremely therapeutic.

Exuding an aura of mystery, native history, and exploration, this Sedona vortex is an ideal area for Shamanic practices, such as drumming, chanting, or ceremonies.  With several route variations to suit all abilities, Courthouse Butte Trail is also a terrific family-friendly hike.

Why You Should Visit

Although opinions vary about the vortexes’ benefits, people who swear by them say the energy has a centering influence. So, if you’re embarking on a path of self-improvement, a trip to the vortexes would be a great way to kick it off.

I have also noticed that the vortexes are popular spots for women on girls’ trips. On my recent hike into Boynton Canyon, I passed by two different groups of four to five women on their way back from the vortex — all beaming from the experience.

Not only are the vortex hikes beautiful and invigorating, but they also provide the opportunity for a bit of peaceful meditation.

A sign pointing to the Boynton Canyon vista in Sedona, Arizona.

The Best Time To Visit

Sedona is a year-round tourist destination, but crowds tend to be the largest from spring through the fall. During the warm, sunny weather of the spring and fall (with average highs in the 70-to-80-degree range), traffic can become a problem — especially during spring break and fall colors.

Summer is also beautiful in Sedona, with the red rocks glowing against the deep-blue Arizona sky. Average high temperatures in June and August reach the high 90s, though, and 100 degrees in July. Because of frequent summer monsoon rainstorms, it is crucial to get out on the trails early in the summer months and plan to be done midday.

To avoid at least some of the crowds, Sedona tourism suggests visiting in the winter months, when temperatures are still mild, with average highs in the 60-degree range. But even then, try to time your trip for mid-week, and get out on the trails early in the morning.

Tips For Experiencing The Vortexes

1. jeep tours are available to some vortexes.

If you prefer a four-wheeling adventure, some of the vortex energy sites are available on jeep tours that traverse Sedona’s rugged terrain to get visitors to the sites, or at least nearby. Earth Wisdom Jeep Tours offers a Scenic Vortex Jeep Tour that includes an introduction to “the facts, feeling, and fallacies of Sedona’s vortex energy spot lore,” according to the tour’s website, and will take you to at least two vortices. The Pink Jeep Adventure Tours offers a Touch the Earth Tour that allows visitors to experience the calming nature of Mystic Vista or Airport Mesa.

2. Don’t Try To Do It In One Day

If it is your goal to visit all of the famous vortex sites, it’s probably best to split them up between 2 or 3 days. Several of the Sedona hikes are fairly strenuous and can take 2 to 3 hours to complete.

3. Easier Options Are Available

Drive-in or easy-hiking access to vortexes is also available at popular Sedona sites such as the Oak Creek Canyon overlook on Highway 89A between Sedona and Flagstaff ; the Chapel of the Holy Cross off Highway 179 and Chapel Road; and the gorgeous West Fork Trail located along the Oak Creek Canyon scenic drive.

Although Sedona is the most famous spot for vortexes in Arizona, the centers of energy are also known to exist on the state’s West Coast near the Colorado River community of Lake Havasu City. The GoLakeHavasu website notes that the community boasts five vortexes of its own.

What Are Energy Vortex Sites?

Energy vortex sites are powerful sources of Earth’s energy that can profoundly impact those who visit them. The Sedona vortex experience purifies and harmonizes the mind, body, and spirit. At some vortex sites energy flows upward, while at others, the energy enters the Earth, spiraling downward.

What Are the Best Known Sedona Vortex Locations?

The four best-known Sedona vortex locations are Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Airport Mesa Vortex, Chapel of the Holy Cross Vortex, and Boynton Canyon Vortex, each radiating its particular vortex energy. The lesser-known Sedona’s vortex sites are Courthouse Butte Vortex and Schnebly Hill Vortex.

Can I Take Vortex Tours in Sedona?

Yes, spiritual seekers can take Sedona vortex tours with several companies, individual guides, and healing practitioners, but everyone is also welcome to visit on their own. Main energy vortexes are easily accessible and Sedona Vortex map is available at the visitor center.

What Are the Sedona’s Vortex Energy Effects?

Natural vortexes use uplifting energy to enhance qualities such as self-confidence, assertiveness, and personal strength. Energy vortexes are believed to work by using divine energy to clear physical and emotional blockages. Practitioners of vortex healing can access this spiritual energy.

How Many People Visit Sedona’s Vortexes Every Year?

Over 3 million people each year visit Sedona’s vortexes to view the awe-inspiring Red Rocks, experience the abundance of natural beauty, and seek a deeper understanding of themselves in the tranquility of an energy vortex experience.

Sedona’s Vortexes: What They Are and Where to Find Them

  • Sedona’s vortexes are thought to be swirling energy centers with healing properties.
  • The four primary vortex sites are Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, and Boynton Canyon.
  • Each vortex presents a unique energy and sensations.
  • Many believe these vortexes can aid in physical and emotional healing and encourage spiritual growth.

Sedona is known for its stunning red rock formations, but it’s also famed for something a bit more mystical – its vortexes. These swirling centers of energy, located at various points around the town, are believed by many to have healing and transformative properties. Whether you’re a spiritual seeker or just curious, exploring Sedona’s vortexes is a must-do experience when you’re in town.

What are Sedona’s Vortexes?

Sedona’s vortexes are thought to be places where the earth’s energy swirls and flows in a way that’s particularly powerful. These energy centers are often associated with spiritual healing, deep meditation, and self-exploration. While the concept might seem esoteric, you don’t need to be a spiritual guru to appreciate the vortexes. Many people visit them simply to take in the stunning natural beauty that surrounds these sites.

Guide To The Vortexes of Sedona Arizona For Non-Believers

Here’s my guide to the famous vortexes of Sedona.

Looking like another planet, Sedona is renowned for its mystical geological vortexes. Some of the town’s most famous hiking trails — Cathedral Rock, Airport Mesa, and Bell Rock — travel right through the famed vortexes.

Bell Rock Vortex, an incredibly popular vortex in Sedona

These energy-exuding vortexes are a huge allure for Sedona travelers. They allegedly make you feel magnificent. I know I did when visiting them.

But you may not be able to tell if it’s the stunning landscape that’s enhancing your energy and enhancing your emotions or if it’s the vortex at work. Just being outdoors has immense immune boosting and mood modifying benefits.

If, like me, you lack a spiritual gene, you may not even want to try to tune into the supernatural vortex theories. And that’s perfectly okay. You can simply appreciate the beautiful natural setting.

sedona vortex trip

So, whether you’re a skeptic or believer, you should visit the Sedona vortexes and experience them in whatever way you want.

The vortexes are the perfect excuse for a hike and they’re undeniably beautiful. To me, the ravishing beauty is what makes them “sacred.”

Visiting the vortexes is one of the best things to do in Sedona .

sedona vortex trip

What Is A Vortex?

What are vortexes exactly? Vortex isn’t really a term of art. It’s just a nickname that stuck.

Vortexes are energy sites or meditative places. They are locations where a swirling condensed center of spiritual energy allegedly projects out of the earth.

Vortexes are thought to enhance energy and provide spiritual inspiration and well being to those who are near them. Mystics claim that there are two types of energies coming from the rocks, magnetic (female) and electric (male). Others refer to the vortex power as upflow or inflow.

Believers feel that Sedona’s vortexes make it easier to pray, contemplate, reduce stress and heal the mind and body. And you’ll see people doing all of these on the vortex sites.

sedona vortex trip

Color plays an important part in the meditative process. The red and burnt orange of Sedona’s rock formations put visitors into a contemplative mood, while the green vegetation signals rebirth.

The higher elevation is intended to get you to look inward, enhancing meditation, introspection and contemplation. I just think of this as the proverbial “getting away from it all.”

The Native Americans recognized the power of these vortexes and often used them for sacred ceremonies.

 Cathedral Rock Vortex

But there’s really no hard science behind vortexes. No instrument has ever measured the force in these “power spots.” There’s no actual magnetism or energy at the vortexes.

In the 1960s, word started to spread in the United States among spiritual seekers to visit Sedona’s “high energy meditation sites.”

In 1979, the psychic Page Bryant identified the four most popular and accessible vortexes.

Since then, seekers have descended on Sedona with the town’s transformative healing on their minds.

sedona vortex trip

Where To Find The Vortexes of Sedona

When you visit Sedona, the whole area is considered to be a vortex. But there are specific Sedona vortex sites where the energy vortex is supposed to be supercharged.

Happily for the non-New Age pilgrim, these spots double as the most beautiful places in Sedona.

Here’s where to find the vortexes of Sedona. Don’t expect to see much signage. Some require hiking. Others can be accessed with a car.

1. Airport Mesa

Airport Mesa is the most visited vortex in Sedona, likely because it’s close to the town center. The Airport Loop trail is a rocky 3.5 mile moderate hike. There’s also an outlook where you can park.

Airport Mesa Vortex Trail

If you hike to the top, Airport Mesa offers outstanding sunset views, though it may be crowded. The sun paints everything around you in a fierce red.

You can sit on the sandstone and stare out across the dizzying grandeur of the high desert landscape. The reward is a panoramic view of Cathedral Rock.

You’ll also twisted juniper trees. Some people have claimed to see colored orbs. At night, the stars seem close enough to touch.

How To Get There:

From the intersection of State Routes 89A and 179, go 1.1 miles west on 89A. Turn left when you reach Airport Road. It’s about a half mile to the parking lot, which will be on your left.

Cathedral Rock Vortex, one of the most beautiful vortexes in Sedona

2. Cathedral Rock Vortex

Cathedral Rock has red spires lofting over Oak Creek. It’s probably the most photographed site in Sedona.

It’s almost impossible not to be drawn to this butte’s towering orange spires. The approximately 1,200 foot high Cathedral Rock looms dramatically over almost every part of town.

The Cathedral Rock trail is easy to navigate. It’s a vigorous but non-technical 1.5 scramble up the rock.

After your climb, you’ll have a nearly 360 view of the red rock country. Rock piles called cairns mark the trails.

Cathedral Rock at Oak Creek

Though short, the trail offers little shade and the pitch is steep. You can see the Verde Valley and Mingus Mountain in the distance. The vortex is found where Oak Creek runs next to Cathedral Rock, and is called “Red Rock Crossing.”

How To Get There

From the junction of State Route 89A ad 179, drive 4.5 miles west. When you reach the Upper Red Rock Loop Road, turn left.

Then, drive 1.8 miles to Chavez Ranch Road. Turn left and follow the road .8 miles. Turn left into Crescent Moon Park. Drive as afar as possible, then walk to the creek.

Chapel of the Holy Cross, a vortex in Sedona with a stunning view

3. Chapel of the Holy Cross Vortex

If you love architecture, you’ll enjoy the  Chapel of the Holy Cross . It’s an unmissable attraction in Sedona.

Built in 1956, it’s a striking landmark designed by Marguerite Brunswig Staude, a pupil of  Frank Lloyd Wright .

The building looks like a concrete spaceship jutting out of craggy boulders. It blends a 90 foot cross, magnificent stained glass windows, and a modern design.

It’s perched on a red rock plateau and a sandstone ridge of varying shades. Inside, you can pray, meditate, or sit quietly.

view from the Chapel of the Holy Cross

Even if you’re short on time, stop by quickly to marvel at the structure. There’s parking along the road leading to the chapel, but it’s limited.

You have to hike up a walkway to get there. If it’s too steep, there are golf carts available to take you up.

The chapel is open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and is free of charge. The views from the top are mesmerizing. The “energy” of the vortex is supposedly strongest inside the chapel, which one might expect from a harmonious calming space.

The chapel is super easy to get to. From Sedona, head south on 79 about 3 miles. Turn left on Chapel Road. Follow the winding road to the parking spaces.

Bell Rock Vortex

4. Bell Rock Vortex

Bell Rock is shaped like a huge standing bell. (Or, some say, an alien spaceship.)  It’s a popular place for UFO sightings, which non-believers will likely abstain from.

Bell Rock is easily accessed from the the main drag, ensuring a steady flow of admirers. You may want to arrive early to see this very popular vortex in Sedona.

There are several clearly visible trails that lead you to the base of Bell Rock. You can continue to the top, as far you you feel comfortable.

enjoying Bell Rock Vortex

Bell Rock is right off State Route 179, just north of the Village of Oak Creek. The parking lot next to the Bell Rock Pathway often fills by mid-morning, even in the middle of the week. So the early bird gets the worm at this vortex in Sedona.

5. Schenbly Hill Vortex

Schnebly Hill is a remote off the beaten path vortex. An off road vehicle is required to get to the top, so I didn’t make it there.

caravan of Pink Jeep Tours vehicles on Schnebly Hill Road

But if you’re adventurous and can get there, you’re in one of the highest plateaus in Sedona. You’ll have views of Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon.

From Sedona, drive south on 179 for half a mile. When you cross over the bridge, turn left on Schnebly Hills Road. After a mile, the road becomes dirt. At the top of the hill, you can pull off and park.

red rock sandstone in Boynton Canyon

6. Boynton Canyon Vortex

Those with their own wheels might want to drive out to Boynton Canyon. This area of Sedona was sacred to the Yavapai Apache, who believe it was their ancient birthplace.

Boynton Canyon is full of scenic trails, which can take hours to hike. it’s billed as an easy hike, but it can take a long time and there’s a scramble at the top.

One trail leads up to a spire called Kachina Woman, which is just after you enter Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness. Believers think this supplies the Canyon’s mellow, shimmering energy.

How to Get To There:

From Sedona, drive 3.2 miles west on 89A. Turn right at Dry Creek Road. Drive until you see signs directing you to Boynton Canyon. From the parking area, walk along the Boynton Canyon Trail.

Courthouse Butte rock formation

7. Courthouse Butte Vortex

Courthouse Butter Vortex is located just east of the Bell Rock Vortex in Sedona. It seems to jut up in the air with great determination.

There’s a moderate 4.2 mile trail loop. Bell Rock Pathway leads to the Courthouse Butte Loop. The trail is fairly flat and even.

How To get There:

This Sedona vortex is off 179 just north of Oak Creek Village. There are a number of turnoffs where you can park your car.

You can also park in the Bell Rock parking area and walk there. But this parking lot is often crowded.

Tips For Visiting The Vortexes Of Sedona

To visit the vortexes, you will need to purchase a Red Rock Pass to park your vehicle onsite. A daily pass is $5. A weekly pass is $15. You can get a pass at the kiosk dispensers in the parking lots.

It’s a good idea to where comfortable shoes with good tread, bring a water bottle, and wear sunscreen and a hat.

Start your hiking early in the day if you can. You don’t want to start late in the day and end up in the dark. If you are doing a sunset walk, you should bring a flashlight.

You may see other inhabitants on the trails like javelinas or snakes. So keep your eyes peeled.

Where To Stay In Sedona

On my last visit, I stayed in a beautiful  Air Bnb  in Oak Creek Canyon. I liked it since it was incredibly scenic and away from the crowds of Uptown.

But Sedona also has some wonderful resorts —  Sky Ranch Lodge ,   Amara Resort ,  L’Auberge de Sedona , and  Enchantment Resort .

Enchantment Resort is in Boynton Canyon. It has one of the area’s best spas  Mii Amo , plus a yoga studio. There’s so many things to do in Sedona that you may need some R&R.

There’s a room called the Crystal Grotto to sit in and meditate. There are more types of cutting-edge massages, facials and yoga programs available here than you thought existed in the world.

Mii Amo Spa, photo by the spa

Amara is a better choice if you want a central location. It’s a French country inn right in the heart of Uptown, just minutes from the galleries and restaurants.

L’Auberge is a luxury resort set on the banks of Oak Creek. The hotel has a special focus on wellness and rejuvenation.

Another way to see Sedona would be the Shuttles, Trollys, Open Vans, and Rent your own Jeeps. Then we have a number of Electric bike for the Roads but not onto the Forest Lands and bike Rentals. Hot Air Balloons over the early mornings, and Helicopters throughout the days hovering over the Red Rocks. There’s even a Motorcycle adventure for those looking for a ride in the Red Rocks. Enjoy Sedona.

There are also non-permitted National Forest guides who take people to the public places – Chapel in Rocks, Buddhist Stupa Peace Park, Rachels Knoll, the Airport Overlook, and State Parks. UFO and Stargazing activities. As a National Forest guide, I am ,y Permit allows us to go on Forest lands to the main known Vortexes and many sacred places. Outside of Sedona – Native American ruins in Clarkdale, Montezuma Castle, Visitor Centers, Camp Verde, and Flagstaff. There are also Wine tours in Verde Valley and Page Springs to safely sample the local wines or visiting the old Mining Town of Jerome.

Just wanted to put in a comment of those who are providing services to support the tourists to enjoy the Energies the Red Rocks in Sedona. If you are doing a Retreat in Sedona, apply for a Special Use for your time on the National Forest to avoid a fine without one.

Please assist us in preserving our History here: ATVs are damaging a lot of our lands by busting fragile crust that supports surface water to allow vegetation to grow and dust killing trees from spinning out. You tube, Facebook, Twitter, and others social media have shared many of the Ancient Homes and Cliff Dwellings that are protected in the Wilderness areas. No guides are allowed to escort or use these places for a commercial use. These areas are also being destroyed from over use, non trail paths destroying the fragile crust, relics removed, spray painting, and other misuse of Native Sacred lands.

Thanks for supporting so many of Us. Thank you very much. CSW

Thank you so much for all the valuable information!

Awesome! I’ll call you in June 2023.

Glad you enjoyed Sandi!

If You're Looking For A Relaxing Getaway, This Luxurious US Destination Is A Must-Visit

S edona, Arizona, is the ultimate paradise for nature lovers and spiritual seekers. Massive crimson rock formations stretch into bright blue skies, creating a majestic landscape that will take your breath away. Sedona is teeming with life and energy. The high-desert ecosystem is dotted with evergreen trees and cacti, providing the perfect environment for mountain lions, javelina, and coyotes to roam.

The city is nestled within the Colorado Plateau, about two hours outside of bustling  Phoenix , and is well-known for arts and culture, outdoor recreation opportunities, and energy vortexes. Sedona's year-round population hovers at just less than 10,000 residents, and nearly three million tourists visit yearly. You'll find everything in town, from gourmet restaurants, luxury hotels, and high-end golf courses to unique private rentals, herbal apothecaries, and crystal shops.

Sedona has something for every type of traveler to enjoy, making it ideal for family vacations or a long weekend getaway with your closest friends. It is the perfect place to immerse yourself in nature, relax at a world-class spa, try alternative healing techniques, and explore your spiritual side.

Learn About Sedona's Fascinating History

Before the arrival of European settlers, Indigenous people thrived throughout the area due to the abundant natural resources and mild climate. For hundreds of years, Native Americans called the Sedona region home, regarding the land as sacred. Sedona was a junction on trade routes stretching from South America to North America and a ceremonial gathering place for various tribes.

Evidence of Native American dwellings date back nearly a thousand years, and some still stand near Sedona today. History buffs will love visiting Montezuma Castle, which was constructed by the Sinaguans in the 12th Century and remains remarkably intact. The massive cliff dwelling features 20 rooms. The National Monument is located about a half-hour drive from the city of Sedona. Boynton Canyon is one of Sedona's popular hiking areas, where you'll find more unique cliff dwellings constructed by the Sinaguan and petroglyphs drawn on the red rock cliffs.

In the 1500s, the first European settlers began to arrive. The town was eventually named Sedona after a community member's wife when he applied to create the region's first post office in 1902. Other historical sites from the 20th Century include Sedona's first store, the Hart Store (currently a shop called the Hummingbird House) which was constructed in 1926 and The Chapel of the Holy Cross which was built in 1956. Both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Experience Sedona's Natural Beauty On Epic Hikes

No trip to Sedona is complete without adventuring into the rugged mountains surrounding the town. The natural landscape around the city is considered by many to be even more beautiful than many of the more popular United States National Parks. You can choose between 200 different hiking trails spanning 400 miles. Hikes range from leisurely walks to strenuous climbs, so there are plenty of options for everyone.

For a quick and easy walk, visit the Seven Sacred Pools, which can be reached via a 1.1-mile out and back trail. The elevation gain is minimal, and you'll arrive at beautiful natural pools carved within the sandstone and fed by a small stream surrounded by epic mountain views.

The Birthing Cave is a fantastic site and one of Sedona's lesser-known energy vortexes. Hopi women ventured there to give birth, and it's associated with feminine energy. Reach the cave via a 1.9-mile out-and-back hike that is moderately challenging. After a scramble, you'll arrive at a beautiful round cavern with a diamond-shaped crevice opening to stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valley.

Embark on the Boynton Canyon trail for a longer hike with an incredible payoff. The 7.2-mile round trip hike takes three to four hours. Leave yourself plenty of extra time to stop and appreciate the views along the way. During the Boynton Canyon hike, you can experience energy vortexes, Indigenous cave dwellings, and the phenomenal Subway Cave if you brave the steep rocky scramble.

Stay In Accommodations With Stunning Views

Lodgings in Sedona include luxurious resorts, cozy family-owned inns, rustic cabins, and unique private vacation rentals. Sedona isn't the most budget-friendly destination out there, but finding affordable accommodations that won't break the bank is possible. For a budget-friendly option, check out the Bell Rock Inn, which has rooms starting around $60 per night.

Stay in the center of Sedona's bustling art district when you book a room at Sedona Hilltop Inn. The family-owned property features comfortable rooms with some mountain views starting at around $150 per night. You'll be within walking distance to many of the town's best restaurants and shopping.

If you're traveling with friends or family, booking a private vacation rental is an excellent choice. Sedona has some gorgeous properties for rent with unique architecture where you can relax and make yourself at home during your stay. Search Airbnb or VRBO for properties like the Red Rock Dome House, which has 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, a private hot tub, and mountain views, with prices starting around $200 per night.

Explore Your Spiritual Side

Travelers looking for spiritual experiences and enlightenment flock to Sedona from around the world to visit the many energy vortexes in the region. Energy vortexes are believed to be located at sacred sites worldwide, like Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Egypt. These mystical places on earth are believed to have special concentrated energies conducive to healing and meditation. Many believe that the energy from Sedona vortexes is so intense that it can be felt physically and can assist in achieving spiritual enlightenment.

The entire city of Sedona is considered a vortex, but a few locations are even more poignant. Cathedral Rock, the Chapel of the Holy Cross, Airport Mesa, Bell Rock, and Boynton Canyon are some of the most popular energy vortexes. When you visit, you'll likely see people meditating or performing other spiritual practices. You can take a guided vortex tour with a professional guide who will help you experience the vortex energy through guided meditations for around $200 per person.

Sedona's natural beauty and good energy have attracted all kinds of New Age healers focused on holistic health practices to achieve wellness in the body, mind, and spirit. It's the perfect place for a spa day and a healing massage. Local metaphysical shops offer spiritual services like astrology chart analysis, tarot readings, and more.

Gourmet Restaurants And Local Art Galleries

Sedona is a dream come true for foodies and health nuts alike. The city has world-class restaurants serving mouthwatering meals made from locally sourced ingredients. Many menus choose to highlight seasonal ingredients throughout the year. From fine dining to casual lunch spots with healthy eats, there's something to suit every palate in Sedona.

For fine dining with fabulous views, head to Mariposa. The Latin-inspired menu features tapas, handmade empanadas, gourmet steaks, and drool-worthy sharable sides like lobster mashed potatoes. A delightful craft cocktail menu contains flavorful creations like the spicy mango Mariposa and twists on classics like the Bolivian Mule and Monarch Sour. For the best views, make reservations around sunset, where you can admire the changing colors over the red rocks through the restaurant's floor-to-ceiling windows.

For unique organic coffee drinks, head to Synergy. The menu features herbal teas and special elixirs like the Aphrodite Rose Vanilla Love Tonic. While you're there, treat yourself to gourmet vegan chocolate and head next door to Sedona Apotheca, where you can browse the selection of bulk herbs, self-care products, crystals, and locally crafted jewelry.

Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village is an excellent spot to enjoy Sedona's art scene. The open-air shopping plaza along Oak Creek features traditional Mexican-style architecture, massive sycamore trees, and beautiful landscaping. There are more than 50 shops to explore, many of which showcase the work of local artists. Sometimes, you can even catch artisans hard at work creating their next masterpiece.

Sedona & Red Rock State Park Self-Guided Driving Tour

See Tour Details »

Self-Guided Driving Tour

The following are loosely listed in order of how you might encounter them on a driving tour of Sedona, starting in the Village of Oak Creek off Hwy 179 and continuing to the “Y” at Hwy 89A, heading west and then doubling back along Hwy 179 toward Uptown Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon along Hwy 89A. Many include easy to advanced hiking in order to reach the best viewpoints, but several can be viewed from a parking lot or on the side of the road. (Be careful parking roadside… traffic in Sedona can be very busy!)

Important: Don’t forget to start at the Coconino National Forest South Gateway Visitors Center at 8375 State Route 179, or the visitors center in Uptown Sedona, to purchase your Red Rock Pass parking permit.

You can start this self-guided tour at any of the points below and simply go back to the top of the list and work your way down. Since most Sedona visitors begin their visit by entering the area from the south, (from Phoenix, off I-17) we’re starting our list there.

  • From the Village of Oak Creek on Highway 179, where you can pull into the Coconino National Forest parking lot for the Bell Rock Pathway to view Bell Rock and Cathedral Butte. This turnoff on the east side of the road is about 1.1 miles north of the National Forest’s South Gateway Visitors Center.
  • Return to Highway 179 and head north 2.8 miles to Back O’ Beyond Road, turning west off the Highway and see spectacular Cathedral Rock.
  • Return to Highway 179 and continue north 0.5 miles to Chapel Road, then 0.8 miles east on Chapel Road up the hill to the famous Chapel of the Holy Cross.
  • Continue on Highway 179 and go to the “Y” at the junction of Highway 179 and Highway 89A. You’re now in Uptown Sedona.
  • From Highway 179, take Schnebly Hill Road. This 38-mile winding and picturesque route ultimately ends at an intersection with Interstate 17. You may choose to go the entire way or turn around and head back down to Highway 179 – it’s up to you. (If you do go all the way up to Interstate 17 and want to come down a different way, you can either go south 38 miles to exit 298 and come back up to Sedona through the Village of Oak Creek on Highway 179, or head north on the 17 and come down Oak Creek Canyon 27 miles on Highway 89A.)
  • Back at the divergence of Highway 179 and Schnebly Hill Road, continue around the world-famous Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Shopping District and follow to the “Y” – a traffic circle at the intersection of Highway 179 and Highway 89A. An exit to the right of the Y will take you to Uptown Sedona, where you’ll find shops, hotels, galleries and restaurants with public free parking lots and on-street parking. Best to get out and stroll a while here… there’s too much to see from your car windows!
  • Leave Uptown and head west on Highway 89A 1.1 mile, turning south on Airport Road (keep your eyes out… there is no traffic light here). A short, steep climb up the hill to Airport Mesa, home of one of Sedona’s vortex spots and perhaps the most popular scenic viewpoint at sunrise and sunset.
  • Return to Highway 89A and head through West Sedona where you’ll find more shops, dining, hotels and galleries. From Airport Road, travel 2 miles west to Dry Creek Road at which you make a right and head north up Boynton Canyon. Boynton Canyon is one of the most scenic of the box canyons that make Arizona Red Rock Country so famous. Boynton Canyon is also home to the renowned Enchantment Resort.
  • Back out on Highway 89A to the west 1.1 miles is Upper Red Rock Loop Road. Red Rock Loop, aptly named, creates a complete loop that passes through Red Rock State Park, one of Sedona’s most popular hiking, picnicking and photography spots. From here, many iconic photos of the view from Red Rock Crossing to Cathedral Rock have been taken.
  • Complete the loop on Lower Red Rock Loop and return to Highway 89A. From here, your trip doubles back 5.5 miles toward Uptown Sedona, and continues up Oak Creek Canyon. You’ll pass Midgley Bridge and Indian Gardens, both great places to stop and take photos. (If traveling north to south, you’ll enter Uptown Sedona about 7.1 miles from Slide Rock.)
  • Just 7.1 miles from Uptown Sedona is Oak Creek Canyon’s most popular attraction, Slide Rock State Park. With easy walking trails, wading in the creek and a natural waterslide, this park is open year-round but is most popular (read: crowded) in the summer months with visitors and families looking for some cool, natural water play. (If traveling north to south, look for West Fork about 2.8 miles from West Fork.)
  • Another 2.8 miles up Oak Creek Canyon on Highway 89A will take you to the trailhead for the West Fork of Oak Creek Canyon Trail, an easy 3-mile and extremely popular day hike. (If traveling north to south, look for West Fork about 6 miles from the Oak Creek Vista.)
  • Nearly 6 miles of winding switchbacks up Oak Creek Canyon on Highway 89A is the Oak Creek Canyon Vista. Look for a well-marked and ample parking lot on the east side of the highway. Don’t miss this opportunity to stretch your legs and view Oak Creek Canyon from its apex as it runs south. Breathtaking year-round, it’s a sight to behold in winter, fall, summer or spring. (If returning from I-17 in the north, the turnoff is about 8.3 miles down the canyon.)
  • From here, you can either turn around and head back down Oak Creek Canyon on Highway 89A south or continue 6.4 miles to the junction of Highway 89A and I-17. If you continue north toward Flagstaff and the I-17, you can either take I-17 south to Schnebly Hill Road or the full 38 miles to exit 298 and return to your starting point in the Village of Oak Creek.
