Sky-Mirror-di-Kuala-Selangor

Sky Mirror is a very unique place but what makes it even more special is the fact that you cannot just decide on visiting this place and come here whenever you want. Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor is visible only during the times when there are low tides.

It is important to pack well for your trip to Sky Mirror. As you are going to be in the sun and heat all day, you need to pack accordingly and come prepared.

Here is a list of Must items to bring in your backpack:

  • Beach Towel to relax after all the photography and fun stuff.
  • Good quantity of Water because there will be no convenience store to buy water bottles from!
  • A change of clothes because the odds of you getting wet here is very high.
  • Umbrella because the sun and heat can be brutal and it would provide that much-needed relief.
  • Sunglasses because it’s a no-brainer for this sunny location.
  • First aid and your prescription medicine because you can never be just too careful.
  • A high-quality camera if you want to do some photography yourself and your phone doesn’t have one because trust me, you are going to regret having low-quality pictures of this wonderful spot.

Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor (With Tips For Photos & What To Expect)

Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor - travelswithsun

Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor is one of the hidden gems that can be found in Malaysia . Simply a must-visit attraction in Kuala Selangor !

This place is gaining more popularity among the locals. Although it has yet to reach the international fame of the Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flats!

By the way, Sky Mirror Sasaran Beach is another name for this place.

Popular Tour Activities

Blue tears and sky mirror kuala selangor, review of sky mirror kuala selangor tour, sky mirror tour package (and cost), what to bring, hotels close to the sky mirror, homestays near to sky mirror, what is so special about the sky mirror of kuala selangor.

Firstly, you can only see the “Sky Mirror” during certain hours (typically during low tide ). The exposed sand bank in the middle of the sea creates an unusual backdrop for photos.

And at low tide, the water is almost still too. So it reflects the sky pretty much perfectly! Especially during a sunny day when the sky is a bright blue !

Clouds reflected in the sky mirror of Kuala Selangor

Best Time To Visit Sky Mirror Malaysia

The tours to visit the Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor only run a few times a month , depending on the tide .

To be exact, the 1st and 15th of lunar month. And 4 days before and after these dates ( new moon and full moon periods ).

During those days, the tours will have a few slots spread throughout the day .

Photography Tips (Cloudy Vs Blue Skies)

If your goal is to get blue skies in your photographs:

Then you should check the weather ahead of your trip too.

What if it’s cloudy?

You will get a minimal effect (like the picture below) with less harsh shadows!

Sky mirror on a very cloudy day

And on the plus side, it won’t be as hot as going in the afternoon. We got the early morning slot so it was not hot at all.

A cloudy day creates a different feel too:

Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor on a partly sunny day

Taking photos at the Sky Mirror on a cloudy day

There are occasionally patches of blue sky if you walk around so don’t be too disappointed if you were hoping for blue skies.

Another silver lining for a cloudy day is that nobody needs to squint their eyes in the photos =)

What else can you do besides getting photos for the gram?

In general, most of the tour operators usually provide a combination or all of these same activities.

Listed in no particular order here:

  • Eagle feeding/bird watching during the day
  • A boat tour to see fireflies in mangroves at night
  • Boat tour to see the blue tears (glowing plankton) at night
  • Clam catching
  • And of course, a boat tour to visit the Sky Mirror during the day

Eagle feeding tour at Pasir Penambang - photo credits to liyanaabdah (Instagram)

  • The order of activities depends on the tide.
  • All the tour companies seem to be run by Chinese groups. So it would be convenient if you know Mandarin or have a friend who does.
  • Some tour operators combine Pulau Sembilan and the Sky Mirror into a 1-day package. You can read about that in the next section

Why not see the blue tears too?

There used to be an overnight (or full day) tour. Where you could stay over at one the Pulau Sembilan islands to see the blue tears (glowing plankton) wash ashore at night.

You can read about our overnight experience to see blue tears in Pulau Sembilan from this post :

But in early 2017, visitors were no longer allowed on the island:

Possibly due to overcrowding of almost 300 visitors daily when the actual daily limit for visitors was around 100.

Thus, that led to significant pollution (e.g. trash and toilet waste) of the islands. ='(

The islands were supposed to re-open at the end of 2018 but until now, there’s still no word yet.

In the meantime:

Tour operators try to offer both the blue tears and sky mirror to their customers:

For example, a visit to the sky mirror in the first half of the day. Followed by another trip to see the blue tears at night.

Both activities will require a boat ride to the sea.

For the blue tears, the tour guide will use a net to scoop some up for visitors to have a look.

Not quite as impressive (depending on the season and weather ), but take what you can get.

Now back to the Sky Mirror, here’s what a typical day tour itinerary is like:

1. Typical prices (cost)

This was the tour company we chose: skymirrortour .

We just went for the Sky Mirror as we have already seen both the fireflies and blue tears before.

Booking our spot on the Sky Mirror Tour a month ahead at RM80 per person .

2. Duration

You will get around 2 hours max to enjoy the Sky Mirror due to the tide coming in.

3. Tour Itinerary

For the morning slots:

Start this day early at 6.30am to meet the rest of the group at the nearby kopitiam.

Tip – the kopitiam opens at 6am but even so, you might want to get there before all the tables are taken ? by the other people in your tour group.

You can walk or drive to the jetty from Sasaran town ( Less than a minute’s drive away).

At the jetty

Board a boat and head for the sea. It is a 30-40 minute journey before you reach the salt flat.

The boat will pass mangroves along the way.

At the Sky Mirror

There may be many brightly-clad tourists already there with other tour operators. To pick out the perfect photo spot. This isn’t too big an issue as the area is quite large anyways.

A couple of professional photographers are with the tour service so look out for them if you need some assistance.

There should be some props you can use too.

Colorful objects make good props at the Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor

It’s not just sand and seawater:

If you’re scared of bugs, it might alarm you that there are little hermit crabs in the sand.

The sand is alive at the Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor

Tip – There are less of them near the edge of the salt flat where the boats are docked but we didn’t mind them too much.

There are some really interesting looking crabs (see pictures below). Be careful not to step on the bigger shells.

Crabs spotted at the Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor

End of the Sky Mirror tour:

Get back on the boat and reached the jetty with enough time to pack and check out of your accommodation.

Overall, we personally had a pleasant experience with Sky Mirror Tour. With no delays or complications .

Communication with the tour service was done through WhatsApp ( in Mandarin ). With fast response times.

Here are some of the popular tour operators:

Mind that tour slots are limited and are held only a few times per month .

Book early to avoid disappointment. More so when a long public holiday is approaching.

Let’s start with the first Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor package:

A combination of accommodation and tour package, this one is run by a family . They have a Facebook page ( link here ).

The main host, Steve pretty much does everything. Acting as tour guide, driver, photographer, etc.

Their 2-day itinerary includes a visit to the swamp to see wildlife (mostly birds).

There’s also an opportunity to rent one of their bicycles to go to the beach. Plenty of shells and mud skippers there!

After dinner, there’s some craft time. That may be stringing shells together.

The next day, they will take you to the Sky Mirror after breakfast . The very last activity of the day is oyster harvesting .

What Is The Accommodation Like?

As for the accommodation:

They have some container-style rooms . These are clean and simple with air conditioning . The meals they provide are also simple but adequate.

Wave Rest House & Cafe Packages

Sky Mirror Tour - Wave Rest House & Cafe Packages

Note: Rooms are cheaper if you have more than 2 people in your group.

Sky Mirror Tour With Wave Rest House & Cafe

It is an extra charge of RM85 per person if you want to go to the Sky Mirror ( boat trip to Pulau Angsa ) during the 2-day stay.

There needs to be a minimum of 7 visitors before this tour can run. Please allocate 5-6 hours for this. Insurance is included .

What to bring:

  • Please prepare your own toiletries, sunblock and insect repellent.
  • You will need a pair of socks to go with rain boots during the mangrove forest exploration.
  • Wave Rest House & Café also provide variety beers and drinks (not included in the package prices)

For more details, you can contact them on Facebook ( link here ).

Your itinerary may vary slightly depending on the weather and tides. They will send you the actual itinerary once the date of your visit is confirmed.

Need a more complete packing list?

  • Colorful clothes are definitely a good idea.

Try to wear bright colors at the sky mirror, Kuala Selangor

  • You’ll need a hat , slippers and plenty of sunscreen too. Sunglasses are up to you.
  • Bring figurines or toys of your favorite characters, colorful umbrellas, scarves, etc. We even saw someone with a kite too!

Umbrellas make good props too at the sky mirror, Kuala Selangor

  • A jacket or scarf if you are afraid of getting cold (during the boat ride).
  • They provide water in plastic bottles (eek!). Take your own bottle and refill it at your accommodation or breakfast spot before the trip. To avoid unnecessary plastic waste.
  • Something to take photos with! Although the tour service may have photographers at hand, bigger groups are quick to book them. Doesn’t hurt to bring a selfie stick or tripod either.
  • Unless you don’t mind leaving your things on the boat (at your own risk), bring a waterproof bag that you can put on the ground close to you. There is nowhere dry at the salt lakes.

Don’t forget to use the toilet before the boat ride! There are no facilities at the Sky Mirror.

sky mirror travel and tour

"Sky Mirror is a popular spot for taking amazing and unique Insta-worthy pictures. Located in Kuala Selangor, it is about 1.74 nautical miles off the coast of Jeram, a fishing village in Selangor. Dubbed as Malaysia’s “Salar de Uyuni”, similar to the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia, this unique attraction drew thousands of visitors every year since its introduction in 2016."

This secret island, created by sand bank, will only emerge during low tide for about three to four hours in the morning to produce a mesmerising mirror-like reflection of the sky. The magic happens when the tide in this area fixes precisely just an inch above the sand, resulting in an exceptional and astonishing mirror effect. The locals used to call it Sand Dollar Beach or Black Sand.

The island will only emerge for several days every month, which is during the 1st and the 15th of the month according to the Chinese lunar calendar, as well as a day before and after these dates. Sky Mirror is only accessible during low tide and you need to join a tour to visit the island.

Despite the miraculous sight offered by Sky Mirror, it is not as simple as snapping a photo upon spotting a picture-perfect view. It also requires careful observation of many factors, such as the weather, tides and waves. The best memories are sometimes made in the briefest moments. You can only stay there for about 45 to 60 minutes depending on the circumstances and conditions of the water, which will determine by your tour guide. The guided tour will take about four hours to complete.

At the sand bank, you will also get to see various interesting marine life, including soldier crabs, hermit crabs, sea anemones and bamboo clams.

How to get there

From Kuala Lumpur, you can either self-drive or take a taxi to Kuala Selangor via the North-South Expressway, which is about 86 km or approximately an 80-minute drive away. Buses to Kuala Selangor is also available from Medan Pasar bus stop (opposite HSBC) in Kuala Lumpur. The bus fare is RM9.00 one-way and the journey takes about two hours. Bus departs from Kuala Lumpur every 30 minutes beginning 6:30 am, and the last bus from Kuala Selangor to Kuala Lumpur is at 7:00 pm.

Sky Mirror Experience at Kuala Selangor, Malaysia

Table of Contents

After an early lunch, we eagerly made our way to the jetty port for our highly anticipated Sky Mirror experience. The boat ride was thrilling and bumpy, adding a bit of excitement to the journey. After a half-hour of exhilarating speed, we arrived at a vast sand bed in the middle of the ocean. With no vegetation in sight, it was essential to bring a cap or umbrella and apply plenty of sunscreen protection.

Jetty Port to Sky Mirror

Discovered by a group of travel enthusiasts in 2016, the Sky Mirror only appears during the 1st and 15th of a lunar month and 4 days before or after these dates. This secret island is said to be a stunning sight, with its mirror-like reflection of the sky.

The pioneers of the island’s discovery have named it Sky Mirror and have since been promoting this newfound gem as a must-visit tourism spot.

Everyone is required to wear life jacket before boarding

At low tide, the Sky Mirror reveals a stunning sand flat that’s as big as a hundred football fields! As you take in the breathtaking views of the sky and sea, don’t forget to also look down, and you’ll be amazed by the abundance of marine life that’s scattered in the sand – from tiny crabs to baby clams, sea grapes, seas anemones, and a variety of beautiful shells. If you’re looking for an adventure and a surreal experience, the Sky Mirror is the perfect destination!
