Your family’s gotta try this: the royal conquest pirate ship at madeira beach.

Your Family’s Gotta Try This: The Royal Conquest Pirate Ship at Madeira Beach

By Janet K. Keeler

Pirate legends run deep in the Tampa Bay Area. Or at least they go deep, if you’re referring to the athleticism of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It’s not just the Bucs’ logo that celebrates rogues of the sea. A 103-foot schooner replica sits at one end of Raymond James Stadium with a cannon that blasts after every home-team touchdown or Bucs win.

And then there’s the 1800s pirate Jose Gaspar, whose legend inspires a celebration in Tampa every January into March. The events are kicked off by an invasion of the city’s waterfront led by rascals aboard the Jose Gasparilla . What follows are parades, music, film and art festivals, and even a distance classic foot race. Think Mardi Gras with eye patches and billowing breeches.

If football isn’t your thing and you’re not brave enough (or visiting at the right time) to do battle with the krewes of Gasparilla, head west to the Gulf of Mexico and board Sunshine Scenic Tours’ Royal Conquest at John’s Pass in Madeira Beach. During a 90-minute cruise, you’ll hear tales of nefarious raiders, watch young pirates duel with foam swords, scramble for doubloons and get menacing scars painted on their faces. Those on the lower deck might get a bit wet during the squirt gun fight, depending on the number of kids and their enthusiasm.

Sunshine Scenic Tours’ Royal Conquest, pirate cruise, kids and pirates

What You’ll Do

Make no mistake, this is an adventure built for kids but it’s a fun multigenerational outing, too. It’s perfectly fine to set sail on the Royal Conquest without children though you may be asked to play the mean pirate in a humorous skit. No one walks the plank if they decline.

You will be considered a spoilsport, though, if you don’t wear the paper pirate hat you get when you board. It’s all in good fun.

Though the Gulf of Mexico is visible beyond the John’s Pass Bridge, the captain never steers the ship under it into rougher waters. The excursion cruises around calm Boca Ciega Bay. This is good news for folks who get queasy on the water. About the only thing that might make you dizzy is the boogieing you’ll do when loudspeakers pump out KC and the Sunshine Band’s Shake Your Booty .

There are a few pirate guides on board besides the captain. One staffs the bar while the others entertain kids. Children aren’t allowed on the top deck, which holds fewer than 10 people. From that vantage point you’ll enjoy tropical breezes and views of spectacular waterfront homes and impressive boats.

You’ll likely hear someone ask more than once, “What do those people do for a living?”

The main deck has plenty of bench seating all around for parents, grandparents and others who don’t want their faces painted. You may see a jumping dolphin or two but the littlest scalawags won’t even notice; they have their own salty adventures. There is no narration about wildlife or land sightings.

The excursion is well-choreographed. You will be back at the boardwalk right on time.

The Royal Conquest sets sail year-round, departing several times a day depending on the season and sometimes demand. The website has up-to-date information about changes, and a phone call can help too.

Weekends are more crowded than weekdays, and the days that schools are out are the busiest. The sweet spot for the Royal Conquest is spring when lovely weather and school holidays collide. Since spring breaks vary around the country that could be early March through April. January and February have great weather and fewer crowds. Usually.

If you go in the summer, book the earliest sailing time. Afternoon thunderstorms rumble in regularly from June through September and late-day trips could be canceled. Florida tropical storms are something to see, so go on the pirate ship in the late morning then find a restaurant with good views afterward. Watching the storm clouds build is a dramatic experience, too.

What Else to Do

John’s Pass is an easily walkable tangle of about 100 shops, restaurants and drinking establishments with icy blender drinks and live music. Among the shops are places to buy swimsuits, towels, regional home decor, spices and teas, and souvenirs including Gulf of Mexico sponges and cigars hand-rolled in the Cuban tradition.

There are ice cream, yogurt and candy shops along with pizza parlors and well-known restaurants like Hooters and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. That ramshackle-looking building across from Wild Seafood Market is Walt’z Fish Shak where you might have to fight the locals for one of the few tables. If you are lucky enough to snag one, order whatever local fish the cook prepares. When the food is gone, the restaurant closes.

If you strike out at Walt’z and are staying at a place with a kitchen, check out the fresh catch at Wild Seafood. Gulf shrimp, grouper and all sorts of snapper may entice you to cook at “home.” For sure try the prepared smoked mahi dip. A visit to the market is a reminder that John’s Pass houses working docks where gulf fishing boats launch and return with an entirely different sort of booty.

Besides food, drink and souvenirs, there are other excursions out of John’s Pass including sunset cruises, fishing trips, dolphin sightseeing and eco-tours. Watercraft rentals are available.

For someone who doesn’t want to join the pirate cruise, there is plenty to do at John’s Pass until the Royal Conquest returns. Benches along the boardwalk are good perches from which to watch the busy waterway. Yes, that is a floating tiki hut complete with daiquiris, margaritas and bar stools.

Not to be outdone by Tampa’s Jose Gaspar, John’s Pass has its own tall tale. A hurricane cut the pass through the barrier island in 1848, long before storms got names such as Mia, Brad and Conchita. A French peasant and cabin boy named John Levique was reportedly on the first ship to sail through the pass. He got naming rights but lost his treasure when the cut obliterated the land where it was buried. So the story goes.

Time Allowance

The excursion itself is 90 minutes but operators suggest arriving an hour before departure to find parking . Sunshine Scenic Cruises doesn’t have exclusive parking but there is a multistory parking garage and a municipal lot nearby. There is metered street parking but you have to get there early to snag that. If you park in the city lot, you’ll pay by the hour at a pay station with card only and punch in your license plate number. This will be cheaper than paying the parking ticket. The attendants watch like hawks.

The time you need for the excursion will depend on where you are traveling from and how much time you want to spend ambling around John’s Pass. The least amount you should budget is three hours; add more if you are going at a busier time of year.

Distance from Big Cities

As always and in many places around the country, traffic causes drive times to fluctuate. John’s Pass is a quick drive from St. Petersburg (10 miles, about 30 minutes) and Tampa (27 miles, about 45 minutes).

For travelers enjoying the lovely beaches of Sarasota, namely Siesta Key , it will take roughly an hour and a half to drive the 45 miles to John’s Pass. Coming from Orlando and the popular Florida theme parks, plan on three hours to travel 110 miles.

Sunshine Scenic Tours’ Royal Conquest, pirate cruise- view from ship overlooking the water

What to Bring

Bring sunscreen even if you’re boarding the ship in cooler temperatures under cloudy skies. Most of the ship is open to the elements. Sunglasses are a must, too.

Carry a light jacket that you can peel off when things warm up. That’s when the sunscreen comes in handy. Wear comfortable walking shoes unless you’re the type who can do anything in heels. No pirate wants to go unrewarded. Bring cash for a tip to stuff in the treasure chest.

Travelers with Disabilities

The elevated boardwalk at John’s Pass can be accessed from street level by both stairs and ramps. Access to the ship is by a wide ramp with handrails, and staff (friendly pirates) assist passengers on and off. Wheelchairs up to 28 inches can be accommodated.

There is a bathroom on board but it is recommended that passengers use facilities on land before boarding. Handicap accessible public bathrooms are available at John’s Pass as well as facilities at restaurants. There is handicap parking.

The upper deck of the ship is reached by steep, ladder-like steps so may not be accessible for those with mobility issues. The wide lower deck can accommodate wheelchairs or other assistive walking devices but movement from front to back is limited.

Parents of children on the autism spectrum should know there will be loud music and activities can be frenetic. There will be a lot of sensory input. The video accompanying this story plus other photos on the company’s website and elsewhere on the Internet, can help prepare a child for the experience.

If you or someone in your group needs specific accommodations or more information, call (727) 423-7824.

General Information

The Royal Conquest sets sail three to four times a day depending on the time of year and day of week. The earliest departure time is 11 a.m. and the last cruise may be 5:30 p.m. or later when it is light longer. For example, the schedule for Saturdays in June is 11 a.m.; 1:30 p.m.; 4:30 p.m., and 7 p.m. In February, Saturdays times are 11:30 a.m.; 2:30 p.m., and 5:30 p.m.

The online booking feature allows passengers to get tickets months in advance. The 46-passenger ship is also available for private parties and there are occasional adults-only cruises.

Tickets are $11, 2 and under; $32, 3-20; $38, 65 and older (ID required), and $40, 21-64. The ticket price includes non-alcoholic beverages, beer and wine; cocktails are extra. Your group can have a photo taken before embarking which you can purchase after the excursion. The crew accepts tips.

Leave time to find paid parking and check in at Sunshine Scenic’s small gift shop on the boardwalk across from the ship. You won’t miss the ship once you spy the skull-and-crossbones flags fluttering in the wind.

Once on board, you’ll receive safety information about life jackets and other procedures.

Tampa Boat Trips

One of the things Florida is well known for is its incredible coastline. Tampa is amongst the most popular destinations along the west coast of the Sunshine State, and Tampa boat tours will allow you to see the bay of Tampa (yes, there is an actual bay!) and the blue-green waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

You’ll have the best time forming romantic memories as you see the breathtaking Florida sunset from the water, enjoy an exhilarating motorboat ride as a family, or perhaps sign up for one of the boating day trips for a bachelorette party. There’s really no celebration that isn’t appropriate for a fun time on the water!

It’s marketed as a “Tampa Celebrity Homes Boat Tour,” but the more compelling part may be its focus on Tampa’s history.

During this 1.5-hour boating adventure, you’ll get to see the city’s skyscrapers from the water, Harbour Island lighthouse, experience Davis Islands canals, and get a narrated tour. The boat leaves behind The Tampa Bay History Center, right next to downtown’s Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park.

Peralta strikes out 11 for Brewers in 11-1 victory over Orioles

Freddy Peralta struck out 11 in six outstanding innings, and the Milwaukee Brewers hit three home runs in an 11-1 rout of the Baltimore Orioles that included a bench-clearing incident in the sixth inning Friday night.

Gary Sánchez, Willy Adames and William Contreras went deep for the National League-leading Brewers (9-3), who have scored 47 runs in their last five games. They scored three runs each in the second, fifth and sixth to take the series opener.

Intrigue built for the matchup when Milwaukee traded ace Corbin Burnes to the Orioles for left-hander DL Hall and infielder Joey Oritz just before spring training. Hall pitches Saturday and Burnes takes the mound Sunday.

Ortiz had his first big league three-hit game Friday. That included an RBI triple in the second — shortly after Sánchez opened the scoring with a two-run homer — and a run-scoring single in the ninth.

The other big draw of this series was the “Jackson vs. Jackson” matchup of two top prospects. That didn’t amount to much in Friday’s opener. Baltimore’s Jackson Holliday, the game’s top-ranked prospect by MLB Pipeline , struck out in all three of his plate appearances. Milwaukee’s Jackson Chourio, ranked No. 2, went 0 for 6 with three strikeouts of his own.

RAYS 2, GIANTS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Jacob Waguespack and five relievers combined on a six-hitter and Tampa Bay beat San Francisco.

Waguespack gave up one run and four hits over four innings in his first start since Sept. 25, 2019, and fourth appearance this season. Garrett Cleavinger (2-0) followed with 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

Phil Maton, Colon Poche, Jason Adam and Pete Fairbanks — who worked the ninth to get his third save in as many chances — closed out the Rays’ fifth win in six games. Fairbanks retired his final two batters with a runner on third.

Tampa Bay has five starting pitchers on the injured list and the Rays’ bullpen entered with an AL-worse 6.43 ERA.

San Francisco has three extra-base hits, including one Friday, over the last three games. The Giants went 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position against Tampa Bay.

METS 6, ROYALS 1

NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Alonso homered and Luis Severino earned his first win for New York, who snapped Kansas City’s seven-game winning streak.

Brett Baty hit a two-run double and the Mets scored all five of their runs off starter Michael Wacha with two outs. New York reached double digits in hits for the fourth consecutive game and has won six of eight following an 0-5 start.

Coming off a 7-0 homestand that marked the longest winning streak in the majors this season, the surprising Royals (9-5) were looking for their first eight-game winning streak since a nine-game run in July 2017.

Salvador Perez homered for the Royals, making their first visit to Citi Field since June 2016. The year before that, they clinched the club’s second World Series title there.

Severino (1-1) worked around four walks in five innings during his third start for the Mets

PIRATES 5, PHILLIES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bailey Falter allowed one run over five innings to beat his former team, leading Pittsburgh over Philadelphia as Phillies star Bryce Harper broke out of an 0-for-18 slide with two hits.

David Bednar pitched a perfect ninth for his second save in five chances, and Henry Davis doubled, singled and drove in two runs. Bryan Reynolds and Connor Joe also had RBIs for the Pirates, who took advantage of some sloppy play by Philadelphia.

Philadelphia ditched its red and white pinstripes to debut blue, yellow and black City Connect jerseys that were odes to Philadelphia’s flag and rich history. The jerseys have gotten mixed reviews from the Phillies’ notoriously tough fan base, and the club’s play on the field on Friday didn’t give the home crowd of 35,578 much to be thrilled about, either.

Falter (1-0) allowed one run and four hits and three strikeouts. He had a 4.56 ERA in 24 starts and 26 relief appearances over three seasons for the Phillies before his Aug. 1 trade to Pittsburgh for infielder Rodolfo Castro.

Harper singled in the first and doubled in the sixth in a 2-for-4 night, raising his average from .196 to .220.

ANGELS 7, RED SOX 0

BOSTON (AP) — Reid Detmers allowed three hits over 6 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts and Taylor Ward matched a season high with three RBIs to lead Los Angeles over Boston.

The Angels sent seven batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring three runs (one earned) against Boston right-hander Tanner Houck (2-1), who had not allowed a run in his two previous starts this season, spanning 12 innings. Houck matched a career high with seven runs allowed (four earned) on a career-high 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The left-hander Detmers (3-0) had a similar outing to his last — an April 6 win against Boston — when he allowed one run on three hits with a walk and 12 strikeouts in six innings. He had two walks on Friday.

Ward’s two-run homer with two outs in the sixth, scoring Mike Trout who singled, ended Houck’s night with left-hander Brennan Bernardino entering.

Boston made three errors, matching a season high on April 5 against the Angels. The Red Sox are 0-4 at Fenway Park this season.

BRAVES 8, MARLINS 1

MIAMI ( AP) — Max Fried pitched six solid innings and Marcell Ozuna homered to lead Atlanta to a win over Miami in their series opener.

Fried (1-0) entered with an 18.00 ERA after a pair of rough starts to open the season, but limited the Marlins to four hits while striking out four and walking one. The 30-year old left-hander was replaced by Pierce Johnson after giving up back-to-back hits in the seventh.

Ozuna blasted a solo shot 446 feet to center field in the ninth for his sixth home run — tying him with Boston’s Tyler O’Neill and the Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout for the major league lead — and the second-longest homer hit at loanDepot park this year. Ozuna was 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

Braves shortstop Orlando Arcia led off a five-run seventh with a double off reliever George Soriano, who then walked Ronald Acuña Jr. and hit Ozzie Albies with a pitch to load the bases. Andrew Nardi replaced Soriano and gave up a bases-loaded walk to Matt Olson and a two-run single to Ozuna.

Nardi exited to some boos before Burch Smith gave up a pair of RBI singles to make it 7-0. Smith got Travis d’Arnaud to ground out to end the inning.

ROCKIES 12, BLUE JAYS 4

TORONTO (AP) — Ryan Feltner pitched five innings for his first win of the season and Colorado had 20 hits in a rout of Toronto.

Ryan McMahon had four of those hits for the Rockies, who won north of the border for the first time after nine consecutive defeats in Canada.

The Rockies hadn’t reached 20 hits since 2022 and not since 2013 in a road game.

Feltner (1-1) allowed two runs and eight hits, walked two and struck out four.

Making his third start of the season, struggling Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman (0-2) allowed six runs and 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings. His earned run average rose from 9.53 to 11.57.

Gausman missed most of spring training because of a sore shoulder. He lasted 1 1/3 innings in Saturday’s loss to the Yankees, his shortest outing since May 2019.

REDS 11, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) — Elly De La Cruz hit a three-run drive for his fourth homer in his last four games, helping Andrew Abbott and Cincinnati beat Chicago.

Tyler Stephenson also homered for Cincinnati, which had dropped three of four. Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Santiago Espinal each had two hits and three RBIs, and Jonathan India walked four times from the leadoff spot.

Abbott (1-1) pitched seven innings of one-run ball in Cincinnati’s longest start so far this season. The left-hander struck out three and walked none.

Chicago finished with four hits in its seventh loss in eight games. It has scored just 30 runs during its 2-11 start.

Robbie Grossman doubled home Zach Remillard in the third to account for the team’s only run in the opener of a six-game homestand. Chris Flexen (0-3) was tagged for six runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings in his third consecutive loss.

TIGERS 8, TWINS 2

DETROIT (AP) — Mark Canha hit a solo homer in first inning, Tarik Skubal pitched five scoreless innings and Detroit went on to beat Minnesota .

Canha, Spencer Torkelson and Matt Vierling each had two hits and two RBIs, helping Detroit pull away with six runs from the fourth to the the sixth inning.

Skubal (2-0) gave up just two hits and two walks while striking out five. Alex Faedo, Andrew Chafin and Will Vest followed in relief.

Pablo Lopez (1-2) gave up five runs on six hits and three walks over four innings and had seven strikeouts.

Minnesota had six hits, including a pair of doubles, and is batting a major league-low .184 They were held scoreless until the ninth when Kyle Farmer hit an RBI double and Edouard Julien followed with a run-scoring single.

RANGERS 12, ASTROS 8

HOUSTON (AP) — Jonah Heim homered and drove in four runs, and Texas beat Houston to drop them seven games under .500 for the first time in eight years.

Evan Carter added three hits as the Rangers built a 12-3 lead by the sixth inning.

Houston fell to 4-11. The Astros had not been that many games below .500 since they were 22-29 before a Memorial Day win in 2016, a season in which they fell to 20-29 before a five-game winning streak.

In their first visit to Houston since Game 7 of last year’s AL Championship Series, the defending champion Rangers rebounded after managing just one hit Thursday as they were shut out for the first time this season in a 1-0 loss to Oakland.

They jumped on J.P. France (0-2) for eight hits and eight runs in just four innings in a third consecutive dismal start for Houston’s pitching staff. Heim’s three-run shot in a six-run third inning put the Rangers up 7-1.

MARINERS 4, CUBS 2

SEATTLE (AP) — Bryce Miller allowed one unearned run in 6 1/3 innings, Julio Rodríguez had a key two-out, two-run single and Seattle beat Chicago.

Miller gave up just three hits and quieted Chicago’s bats that entered averaging more than six runs per game, second-best in baseball.

Miller had another solid performance following up on his last outing against Milwaukee when he threw seven shutout innings. He has not allowed an earned run since the fourth inning of his first start on March 31 against Boston. Miller struck out four and left after issuing a four-pitch walk to Nico Hoerner on his 100th pitch.

Miller (2-1) should have finished the night without any runs allowed, but a pair of Seattle errors in the seventh inning after he left led to Hoerner scoring with two outs. Yan Gomes appeared to ground out to third to end the inning, but Luis Urías’ throw to first base was slightly into the runner and Ty France couldn’t make a clean catch.

Michael Busch hit a one-out solo homer off Ryne Stanek in the ninth, but Stanek recorded the final two outs for his second save.

Seattle took a 1-0 lead when Urías was hit by a 1-2 pitch from Chicago starter Jordan Wicks (0-2) with two outs and the bases loaded in the second inning.

CARDINALS 9, DIAMONDBACKS 6

PHOENIX (AP) — Nolan Arenado hit a three-run homer, Paul Goldschmidt had the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning and St. Louis rebounded from blowing a six-run lead to beat Arizona Diamondbacks.

Lars Nootbaar added a two-run homer for the Cardinals in his return from the injured list. He missed the first 13 games with a left rib contusion suffered during spring training.

The Diamondbacks rallied from a 6-0 deficit, tying it with six runs in the fifth. Eugenio Suárez had the big blow with a tying three-run homer, lifting a fly ball down the right field line off Giovanny Gallegos that just cleared the fence.

The Cardinals shook off the collapse and jumped ahead 7-6 when Goldschmidt leaned across the plate and slapped a single up the middle, scoring Brendan Donovan, who reached on a triple and finished with three hits.

St. Louis stretched the lead to 9-6 in the eighth on an RBI triple for Masyn Winn, followed by a sacrifice fly by Victor Scott II.

Nootbaar flew out to left field in his first at-bat, but delivered a no-doubt shot in the third, turning on a fastball from Brandon Pfaadt and sending it 438 feet into the right field seats for a 6-0 lead.

ATHLETICS 2, NATIONALS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Lawrence Butler hit the game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning and had a solo home run to power Oakland to a walk-off win over Washington.

Max Schuemann scored the winning run in his major league debut after entering as the automatic runner on second base to begin the 10th inning. The 26-year-old utility man was called up on Thursday to replace injured outfielder Brent Rooker.

The Nationals tied the game in the top of the ninth inning on a solo shot from Jesse Winker off A’s right-hander Dany Jiménez.

A crowd of 5,777 fans attended Friday, as the A’s hosted their first home game since announcing April 4 they will play the next three seasons in Sacramento. They are playing their 57th and final season at the Oakland Coliseum until the team moves to Sutter Health Park, which is home to the Sacramento River Cats, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.

Butler hit a solo shot 445 feet to right field in the third inning with a 113.1 mph exit velocity, his first home run of the season.

Oakland right-hander Paul Blackburn made his third straight scoreless start to begin the season, striking out four in 6 1/3 innings.

PADRES 8, DODGERS 7, 11 INNINGS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jackson Merrill provided the go-ahead single in the 11th inning, Fernando Tatis Jr. homered and had three hits, and San Diego rallied for a win over Los Angeles despite Shohei Ohtani hitting his 175th home run in the majors to tie Hideki Matsui for the most by a Japanese-born player.

Tatis Jr. hit a two-run shot in the seventh inning to tie it at 7-all. Manny Machado, Ha-Seong Kim and Jake Cronenworth also went deep for the Padres, who trailed 7-3 after three innings.

With José Azocar as the automatic runner in the 11th, Vázquez had a two-out base hit to left field off Alex Vesia (0-2) to drive in the go-ahead run.

Robert Suarez (1-0) threw 1 1/3 hitless innings for the win.

San Diego won its first extra-inning game this season. The Padres lost their first 12 last year before winning a pair in the season’s final week.

In the first inning, Ohtani drove an elevated outside fastball from Michael King 403 feet into the center-field stands, closing the Dodgers to 2-1.

Ohtani is batting .457 (16-for-35) during his eight-game hitting streak, including four homers, 12 extra-base hits and seven RBIs.
