Don’t expect air travel to soar at new heights this summer.

The ongoing drama with Boeing is poised to hamper travel in the upcoming months, experts warn, as airlines scramble to distance themselves from the embattled airplane maker.

Boeing is currently weathering a storm of negative press after  a door plug blew off a January Alaska Airlines flight . In March, passengers on a United Airlines Boeing jet had to be evacuated  after the flight went off its runway  in Houston and 50 people were bloodied and hurt on a New Zealand-bound Boeing jet that  plummeted into a frightening nosedive .

Many airlines are either backlogged trying to purchase new planes from competitors, such as Airbus, or waiting for Boeing’s new line of “high-quality airplanes that meet all regulatory requirements,” a spokesperson told MarketWatch .

“A lot of airlines touch Boeing products every day,” said travel expert Katy Nastro.

“When something affects Boeing, it’s likely to affect those carriers that are all Boeing or [that] have a fleet that’s significantly more Boeing versus Airbus.”

United Airlines, which has taken a near equal amount of flack as Boeing for recent in-flight mishaps, is putting a freeze on hiring pilots to acquire new planes from the direct Boeing rival.

“As you know, United has hundreds of new planes on order, and while we remain on a path to be the fastest-growing airline in the industry, we just won’t grow as fast as we thought we would in 2024 due to continued delays at Boeing,” according to a United Memo shared with the outlet.

Southwest Airlines also finds itself in a turbulent spot as it flies only Boeing 737 jets. The airline was initially anticipating its entire order of 79 new planes fulfilled, but only 46 are slated to arrive this year now.

Now, Southwest is going to axe 1% — still a few thousand flights — for the year.

Nastro says this will likely hit “oversaturated” routes to popular destinations like Orlando or Las Vegas in addition to more obscure airports.

Delta Airlines is also waiting on a new fleet of Boeing Max 10 jets, but CEO Ed Bastian recently told Bloomberg that the order could be delayed until 2027.

Alaska Airlines said in a statement that the flyer remains “committed to Boieng” at this time, despite having full flight capacity “in flux,” company documents from March show .

The Irish airline Ryanair has 400 of its 600 planes made by Boeing and has 210 brand new Max 8 planes on the way. Initially, 57 were expected for June but that number was slashed to 40.

Now, the airline is removing flights from ten routes from July to September while also hiking ticket prices by 10%, CEO Michael O’Leary said last month . That’s on top of a recent 17% cost raise from last year.

Another way to try and mitigate damage is by many airlines flying dated “workhorses” in the sky, according to Gunnar Olson, a flight-deal analyst.

“Most travelers will not notice how old the plane is,” he said. “The flying experience is pretty much the same.”

Ryanair (RYAAY) Hits 52-Week High: What's Driving the Stock?

S hares of Ryanair Holdings plc ( RYAAY ) scaled a 52-week high of $147.78 in the trading session on Apr 1, 2024, before closing a tad lower at $146.50.

The company’s shares have gained 52.6% over the past six months, significantly higher than 26.5% growth of the industry it belongs to.

Let’s find out the factors supporting the uptick.

Passenger volume has been robust at Ryanair over the past few months owing to the rebound in air-traffic from the pandemic lows. Ryanair’s third-quarter fiscal 2024 (ended Dec 31, 2023) revenues improved 23.1% year over year, driven by upbeat passenger volumes owing to the strong October 2023 mid-term and peak Christmas/New Year travel.

Ryanair continues to benefit from improved traffic growth. Traffic grew 10% during the first nine months of fiscal 2024. Management expects fiscal 2024 traffic to be 183.5 million. On the back of a buoyant traffic scenario, the company’s profit after tax also showed year-over-year improvement during the first nine months of fiscal 2024. The load factor was a healthy 94% in the first nine months of fiscal 2024.

Meanwhile, Ryanair recently reported solid traffic numbers for February 2024, driven by upbeat air-travel demand. The number of passengers ferried on RYAAY flights in February was 11.10 million, implying that 5% more passengers flew than a year ago. The load factor (percentage of seats filled by passengers) was high at 92% in February 2024. The reading was similar in the year-ago period. RYAAY operated more than 63,000 flights in February 2024. However, more than 800 flights got canceled due to the Israel/Gaza conflict.

Ryanair’s measures to expand its fleet to cater to the improvement in air-travel demand are encouraging. RYAAY’s total fleet included 536 aircraft as of Sep 30, 2023.

SkyWest's fleet-modernization efforts are commendable. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for SKYW’s 2024 earnings has improved 27.3% over the past 90 days. Shares of SKYW have surged 211.1% in the past year.

SKYW has an expected earnings growth rate of more than 100% for 2024. SKYW delivered a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of 128.02%, on average.

The CEO of Ryanair says the airline would regularly find missing seat handles and tools under floorboards on Boeing planes

The boss of Europe's largest airline told CNN last week that it would regularly find leftover tools under the floorboards of Boeing planes, as well as missing seat handles.

Michael O'Leary, the CEO of Ryanair, Europe's biggest airline by passenger numbers, told the news network that the issues were "nothing big, nothing major," but added that it wasn't up to standard.

"In 2022 and 2023, we were finding little things like spanners under the floorboards, in some cases, seat handles missing, things like that," O'Leary told CNN on March 20.

"This shows a a lack of attention to detail, quality issues in Boeing," O'Leary added.

Ryanair spends 48 hours checking new planes in Dublin after taking delivery, said O'Leary. The Ireland-based low-cost carrier only flies Boeing aircraft and is one of the aircraft manufacturers' biggest customers.

This isn't the first time O'Leary has said there's a lack of quality control on Boeing planes.

At a press conference in January, he said he found a wrench under the floor of one plane in such checks.

"It is not acceptable that aircraft get delivered at less than 100%," O'Leary said at the time.

However, the situation had also improved by then, as the 12 planes Ryanair took delivery from October to December were "the best deliveries we've taken from Boeing," said O'Leary.

David Calhoun, the CEO of Boeing, announced on Monday that he would resign at the end of this year. His announcement comes as Boeing faces heightened scrutiny after a door plug blew out during an Alaska Airlines flight on January 5.

Ryanair has responded positively to the leadership shake-up.

"We welcome these much-needed management changes in Seattle," said O'Leary in a Monday statement.

"We are squarely focused on implementing changes to strengthen quality across our production system and taking the necessary time to deliver high-quality airplanes that meet all regulatory requirements," a Boeing spokesperson told Business Insider when asked to respond to O'Leary's comments. "We continue to stay in close contact with our customers about these issues and our actions to address them."
