Every Shirt Color in Star Trek, Explained

Every shirt color in Star Trek has meaning and I’ll try my best to explain to Trekkies and non-Trekkies alike what that is. You know how some schools and most jobs require students and employees to wear uniforms? Well, Starfleet basically does the same with its officers. In The Original Series , Commanding officers wear gold, science officers wear blue, and engineering officers wear red. But what does that mean for all the different iterations of Star Trek ?

Commanding Officers of Star Trek

The classic shirt color of those in command positions is gold. Unless we’re talking about Captain Kirk’s green formal top in the “Journey to Babel” episode of The Original Series . (Captains Pike and Kirk revive these prime colors in Strange New Worlds .) Then Captain Picard came along in The Next Generation and the colors shifted to red and black.

Enterprise was later content to put Captain Archer in something that looked more appropriate for a car shop than an important space mission. But who are we to judge?

Discovery has since returned to red with gray sometimes peppered in for more official occasions. Luckily, however, it’s not the color of shirts that make the leader. It’s the person within them and how willing they are to make morally dubious decisions.

Science Officers of Star Trek

The shirt color of science officers has consistently been blue throughout Star Trek . The types of blue may change depending on what series you’re watching. Nevertheless, though, blue seems to be the staple of officers overwhelmed with trying to keep their officers alive from planet to planet.

Dr. Julian Bashir showed up in Deep Space Nine with a brash, overly confident can-do attitude. He was the first doctor in Star Trek to be yelled at rather than doing the yelling. He was also the first one to grow before our very eyes into a competent and dependable professional. But the blue in the collar of his shirt spoke to the tradition of those who came before him. For that, Dr. McCoy would be most proud.

Engineering Officers of Star Trek

Speaking of tradition, the Red Shirts have continued to be synonymous with bad luck no matter what Star Trek TV series or movie they’re in. Everyone else is in a sci-fi story with hints of comedy and drama. Meanwhile, the Red Shirts are in a horror movie where they go off to investigate strange happenings and then just never come back.

Lt. Uhura is perhaps one of the only Red Shirts to make it out of a Star Trek series alive. Chief Engineers always do well because they’re part of the main cast and really likable (for the most part, at least). Taking Odo out of a Red Shirt probably saved his life. Then again, the chances of anything taking out Odo were slim anyway.

Hopefully, I’ve successfully explained the meaning of every shirt color in Star Trek . There are a lot of variations that have appeared through the years. All of the Enterprise crew, for example, just looked like mechanics. Even Discovery doesn’t have much variation in how the officers dress. Will that change with future Star Trek projects ? Only time – and Paramount Plus budget – will tell.

What Do The Star Trek Uniform Colors Mean & Why Are They So Important?

"Star Trek" is definitely a technicolor wonderland of a show. That sense of eye-catching brilliance trickles down from the background scenery to the props used by each cast member, all the way to the uniforms the show's central crew wears as a part of their duties.

It's easy to notice that the crew of the Starship Enterprise wear tunics in varying shades. Those colors are quite important — they denote which job class each crew member belongs to. Those classes were devised by series creator Gene Roddenberry and costume designer William Ware Theiss, and are intended to resemble the classifications used by the United States Military on noise-heavy aircraft carriers.

Sometimes there are differences allowed for dress uniforms; the command staff, for instance, will wear green uniforms during formal occasions. And these rules aren't hard and fast ones; across the whole universe of "Star Trek" series, films, and other ephemera, the colors various officers wear on the show and the meanings behind them change depending on when the scene takes place in the show's general timeline. But these are the color codes that most often denote each character's job on the ship, and the ones used during the original "Star Trek" series to explain who is who and what they do.

The term 'red shirt' gained a negative connotation

Even if you're not a "Star Trek" fan, you've probably heard jokes about how often red-shirted officers are introduced to the show, only for them to quickly die during away missions. For a period of time, the term "red shirt" became a dirty word in the "Star Trek" world; it's gone on to take on a larger cultural significance, indicating that a person is a disposable background element easy to get rid of. And yet many of the show's red-toting characters are the franchise's longest-lasting individuals. The class encompasses the engineering, security, and communication staff positions on the Enterprise. Lt. Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) and Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (James Doohan) are among the most prominent crew members who wear scarlet hues. To wear red on the bridge is definitely a high honor.

Are 'red shirts' more doomed than their counterparts? Mathematician James Grime weighed in on the subject during a talk at New York's Museum of Mathematics in 2017. A simple statistical calculation revealed that 10% of the show's red-shirted denizens die during the original show's run — compared to 18 percent of golden-shirted characters. "There is some truth in the old 'Star Trek' myth if you look at security officers ... 20 percent of security officers died. So I think the moral of the story is, if you're on the starship Enterprise and you want to survive, be a scientist," he said.

Ironically, crimson red was eventually used to denote a position of authority on the ship; the uniforms that debuted in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" place the crew in scarlet togs, with no color divisions to mark them.

Blue denotes a scientific mind

If you're feeling blue during your time on the Enterprise, then you're probably logically-minded. Throughout much of the original "Star Trek" series, blue uniforms were given to the show's science and medical officers. That's why Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Nurse Christine Chapel (Majel Barrett), and Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley) can be seen sporting blue tunics throughout the series' run. The designation of blue uniforms hasn't changed much during the course of various "Star Trek" series; blue and purple shades are used to indicate ship medics in such continuations of the universe as "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

Blue was also the chosen shade for the crew uniforms in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," with splashes of brown, oatmeal and white. This change didn't go over well with the cast. Their rebellion against the baggy uniforms went beyond their alleged unsightliness; costume designer Robert Fletcher sewed shoes into the bottom of each uniform, forcing the actors to ask their assistants for help in completing simple tasks such as going to the bathroom. A change was promptly made for the next film, and the red Navy-style uniforms stuck with the whole movie franchise until "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was launched.

Golden shirts denote power

Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), meanwhile, sports a gold-colored shirt. These are the outfits worn by those in command: largely, captains and other figures of authority. In other iterations of the show, gold tunics are worn by members of the ship's security staff. In any event, it's a uniform that denotes power.

But those shirts weren't actually intended to be golden at all; in reality, they were pale green tunics that were filmed as golden or orange-looking thanks to the sort of film the show used. According to an interview conducted with Bill Thiess in 1988 for Star Trek Prop Authority , it wasn't the show's intent to present Kirk and other captains as wearing gold at all. "It was one of those film stock things; it photographed one way – burnt orange or a gold. But in reality was another; the command shirts were definitely green." Unfortunately, thanks to that mistake the look has stuck, and Kirk's uniform is more often remembered as golden instead of green.

Whether they're sporting green or dodging danger in red, there's one thing officers on the Enterprise definitely know how to do – look stylish in a timelessly classical way.

Lower Decks finally fixed the biggest cliché in Star Trek canon

What does it mean to be a "redshirt," anyway?

What’s the most dangerous color in Star Trek?

Old-school wisdom would tell you that wearing a red uniform is bad form in Starfleet — because the random officers wearing “redshirts” always get offed in horrible ways. But, this trope hasn’t actually been true in Trek canon for a very long time.

With one very sly joke, Lower Decks just made it clear that, as you look beyond The Original Series , wearing red is broadly meaningless in Starfleet.

Here’s how Lower Decks unpacked this trope — and what it means philosophically, both in terms of Star Trek canon and the common sci-fi tropes of “disposable” crewmembers. Mild spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2, Episode 6, “The Spy Humongous.”

The origin of the Star Trek redshirt trope

During the run of The Original Series , Starfleet characters wearing a red uniform belonged either to the engineering, operations, or security divisions.

This is why Uhura and Scotty wore red. But, because of that last category — security — the extra muscle sent to deal with rough aliens, Klingons, space gods, and rock monsters, also wore red. That’s why a bunch of guys who got slaughtered by the Horta in “Devil in the Dark” had red shirts.

Although it’s unrelated, the academic process of holding a student back in school (for whatever reason) is also called “redshirting” and, like the redshirts of Star Trek, has some connotation that the person who is a “redshirt,” is somehow less than. Either that or a “redshirted” person is carrying some kind of stigma. Hell, you could argue the earliest “redshirt” was Hester Prynne in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter .

The larger point is simple: Trek fandom latched onto the recurring cliché that Starfleet had expendable characters, and they often wore red. If there was a landing party at the beginning of an episode, and it contained Kirk, Bones, Spock, and a few folks wearing red that you’d never seen before, you were basically just counting down the moments until they expired.

In 2009, J.J. Abrams embraced this trope in the Trek reboot by putting Kirk and Sulu on a death-defying raid of a Romulan platform... along with... some guy named Olson. And yes, Olson had a red spacesuit, and you get one guess as to what happened to him two minutes after he was introduced.

Ruk has destroyed all the redshirts in this episode, but stops short of ending Kirk’s life — why?

In some ways, Trek’s redshirt trope is in conversation with horror tropes where characters are picked off, one-by-one, until the only people remaining are the primary protagonists. (In this view, everyone in Alien is “a redshirt” who isn’t Ripley.)

While the connection to horror might seem odd with Trek, some of the writers of The Original Series had horror backgrounds, including Harlan Ellison, Theodore Sturgeon, and George Clayton Johnson. Additionally, Psycho author Robert Bloch wrote three episodes of the classic Trek: “Wolf in the Fold,” “Catspaw,” and “What Are Little Girls Made Of?”

In the latter — one of the very first episodes of TOS — a huge android named Ruk (Ted Cassidy) murders red-shirted security officers, and later nearly murders Kirk. Obviously, Ruk can’t kill Kirk, because Kirk is the main character, and the writing simply won’t allow him to die. But in The Original Series , with very rare exceptions, the danger faced by the main characters (Kirk, Uhura, Sulu, et al.) is heightened when guest characters — “redshirts” — die first.

The myth of Star Trek redshirts

The math on literal redshirted characters being more likely to die in The Original Series doesn’t really add up. While TOS has a lot of “minor” characters sacrificed in favor of the various plots, the numbers don’t totally support the idea that characters wearing red are always in the most danger.

In 2017, Inverse spoke to mathematician James Grime who specifically studied this trope. “Of the 43 deaths we saw, 25 of them were red shirts,” Grimes said. “That’s 58 percent. This has led people to believe that redshirts are the most likely to die, but this is wrong.” Grimes’ point was simple: “This is the probability you are a redshirt if you die. What we want to know is the probability you will die if you are a redshirt . And that’s a different question.”

The larger point is, there’s a logical fallacy in the Trek redshirt trope: People don’t die because they’re wearing red. These characters die because they are doing the more dangerous jobs in Starfleet. Both narratively, and within the constraints of in-universe world-building of Starfleet, there is a subtle classist system; that classist system probably puts the junior officers at greater risk than senior officers.

How Lower Decks flipped the “redshirt” script

In Season 2, Episode 6 of Star Trek: Lower Decks — “The Spy Humongous,” Boimler is briefly recruited by a group of cocky ensigns obsessed with getting promoted. This group unironically calls themselves “the Redshirts,” which Boimler sort of thinks is weird at first — but he goes with it.

Boimler’s hesitation about the nickname implies that, within the reality of Star Trek, the trope of “redshirts,” may also exist — though, by the 24th century, the colors of uniforms had been switched around. In all but one of the classic Trek films — from The Wrath of Khan to The Undiscovered Country — all the characters wore red. By the time The Next Generation debuted, the command division of Starfleet no longer wore gold but instead wore red. You could argue this means that “gold shirts” were in more danger in TNG, DS9, and Voyager , but that’s not exactly the point.

In this Lower Decks episode, Boimler makes the most interesting point against the redshirt trope. Toward the end of the episode, when Tendi has been turned into a giant scorpion monster, the “Redshirts” start trying to give speeches instead of actually doing anything. When Boimler calls them out, their answer is “We’re inspiring the crew!” But Boimler’s response is perfect: “We are the crew.”

In the world of Star Trek, there’s a sense that — at least on Earth — poverty, war, racism, sexism, and other discrimination simply don’t exist. But what Lower Decks points out is that classism does still exist, even in the egalitarian 24th century.

Granted, Lower Decks presents this as a joke, but it’s a pointed one. The difference between being a “member” of a team and a “leader” of a team is a trope that pervades everything from superhero flicks to kitchen-sink dramas.

By attacking this one silly Star Trek trope, what Lower Decks is saying is that life is rarely that binary. In life, most of us aren’t “the captain” — but that doesn’t mean we’re the clueless, expendable ones in red, either.

Lower Decks Uniforms

So, after yesterday's reveal, I had to do this. I'm planing on updating these as we get more info on the show and more variant uniforms, I quite like the style. For starters, I have yet to add in the CMO uniform variant.

Interesting how they do the sideways clasp mechanism off the TWK uniforms. Nice work, though I wish future Star Trek shows would swap Gold/Red back to their appropriate TOS departments and stop following TNG so closely. I do wonder if rank is going to be expressed via shirt cuffs again- with our main characters apparently all ensigns it makes sense they have no pips. Still....

Nice! I think these may be based on the "Generations" uniforms that ended up being unused. There's concept art and even a few test uniforms, plus some action figure models.

Indeed they do look quite similar to the unused 'Generations' uniforms. One of my all time favorites, so I'm not complaining. @Norsehound : During the ComicCon panel for Lower Decks they showed the command crew of the USS Cerritos, and they did have TNG style pips for ranks, same number of pips for each rank, and same location on the neck. I do miss the rank cuffs; it's one of the things I loved about the aforementioned 'Generations' uniforms. I decided to add the rank structure onto the image, as well as the (rather simple) combadge design. I'm sure it was kept simple due to the animation style, but It's still probably the only thing about these uniforms I'd change.

I'm kind of glad they didn't for that exact reason -- I like the FC uniforms.

Went back to these after the new trailer dropped today. I revised pretty much all the shapes and colors, as they changed a bit from the original reveals, plus I added the dress uniforms we saw briefly on the trailer.

I like these, a return to the TNG "peacetime" style, and looks like they could evolve into the Picard uniforms, both the current ones and the flashback costumes.

I'm glad they brought back the TNG dress uniform. I always preferred it to the Insurrection version. It's very sleek and isn't just a variation on European formal wear.

After the awesome first episode, I had plenty to add here! -We finally saw that Science and Medical had distinct uniforms (well, distinct boots) -An Admiral uniform! I'm sure it's more distinct than the standard from the waist down (maybe a belt?), but all we saw so far was the shoulder area. I quite like those pads added, it makes an admiral easier to see from a distance, which I'm sure comes in handy when drawing one far away. I started on the EV suit as well, but that's gonna take a while, as my time for this is limited for now.

The admiral should've had double pips, cause that's how they were worn before and after.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is a joyous celebration of Star Trek that should have gone on for more than 5 seasons, but it's okay to go out on a high note.

Characters like Mariner grow and change, moving away from the lower deck setting. Promotions change the point of the show.
The future of Star Trek may become more streamlined, with fewer shows for a more cohesive franchise. Star Trek: Legacy may be on the horizon.

It's sad that Star Trek: Lower Decks will end with season 5 when it streams on Paramount+ in fall 2024, but that's okay. Created by Mike McMahan, the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks was great from the start by being a hilarious love letter to Star Trek that celebrates the weirdest parts and deepest cuts of Star Trek lore. Rather than ignore the bizarre aspects, Star Trek: Lower Decks embraces the oddities and invents new ones, like the cosmic koala, vindictive hologram Badgey (Jack McBrayer), and the cute-but-deadly Moopsy. In a perfect world, Star Trek: Lower Decks should have matched (or surpassed) the 7-year runs of the Star Trek: The Next Generation era.

After all, the main characters of Star Trek: Lower Decks are more than their two dimensions would imply. Star Trek: Lower Decks ' planned character arcs are nearing completion. In Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, the main characters were collectively promoted to Lieutenant junior grade, signifying a step up in the USS Cerritos' hierarchy, and a step further away from the conceit of Star Trek: Lower Decks being about, well, the lower decks. Boimler learned how to trust his subordinates (he has subordinates!), and take decisive action. Rutherford figured out his present, while Tendi acknowledged her past. T'Lyn found actual friends in Starfleet. And Mariner really, truly, for real this time, stopped sabotaging herself and embraced being a natural leader. These characters are growing.

Why not a Star Trek: Lower Decks movie?

Even if the lower deckers become upper deckers (and they will), the story started on Star Trek: Lower Decks could still continue after one more year of solid storytelling wraps this chapter. The end of Star Trek: Lower Decks might mean the beginning of a sequel series with a new name, like Star Trek: Cerritos. If Star Trek: Section 31 does well, more streaming movies may be in the cards, so why not a Star Trek: Lower Decks movie? On Instagram, Boimler actor Jack Quaid comments on Star Trek: Lower Decks ending, and suggests the possibility of a new home on a different streaming service, like Star Trek: Prodigy 's move to Netflix.

The Future of Star Trek May Be More Streamlined

Fewer star trek shows might mean a more cohesive franchise..

The new era of Star Trek has been nothing short of a feast, with five Star Trek series in simultaneous production. As awesome as that is, it's not sustainable, so reducing the number of Star Trek shows in production might be a way to streamline the franchise. With the back-to-basics episodic Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as the flagship show, the 32nd century Star Trek: Starfleet Academy can inherit Star Trek: Lower Decks ' lighter tone and some of Star Trek: Discovery 's characters. That leaves space for a Star Trek set in the early 25th century, in which live-action Lower Decks characters could feasibly appear.

Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome brought Boimler and Mariner to live action in the fantastic Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 7, "Those Old Scientists", written by Kathryn Lyn and Bill Wolkoff, and directed by Star Trek icon Jonathan Frakes.

Bringing Star Trek: Lower Decks to a logical, planned ending after season 5 may make it possible for Star Trek: Legacy to finally happen. Fan demand for the Star Trek: Picard spinoff hasn't died down, and even Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman wants Star Trek: Legacy . While it wouldn't be an even trade with the potential difference in tone, and how relatively inexpensive producing the animated Lower Decks is, Star Trek: Legacy could still be a silver lining to the dark cloud of Lower Decks ' last year. Saying goodbye to Star Trek: Lower Decks after 5 amazing seasons won't be easy after getting attached to the USS Cerritos' crew, but with a little faith (of the heart) it'll be okay.

‘Star Trek: Lower Decks' to End With Season 5

Paramount+ has made two big decisions about its Star Trek universe.

Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a fourth season, while Lower Decks will end with its previously announced upcoming fifth season, expected to air sometime this year.

Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan and executive producer Alex Kurtzman posted a statement on the Star Trek website about the decision to conclude the animated series: "While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it's no exaggeration to say that every second we've spent making this show has been a dream come true. Our incredible cast, crew and artists have given you everything they have because they love the characters they play, they love the world we've built, and more than anything we all love love love Star Trek . We're excited for the world to see our hilarious fifth season which we're working on right now, and the good news is that all previous episodes will remain on Paramount+ so there is still so much to look forward to as we celebrate the Cerritos crew with a big send-off. … We remain hopeful that even beyond season five, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures."

Meanwhile, Strange New Worlds is currently in production on its third season, which is set to debut in 2025.

The series follows Captain Pike, Science Officer Spock, Number One and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise , in the years before Captain Kirk boarded the starship, as they explore new worlds around the galaxy. It stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush and Christina Chong.

Lower Decks is an animated comedy series that focuses on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet's least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos . The voice cast stars Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells and Eugene Cordero.

'Star Trek: Lower Decks' Season 4 blasts onto Blu-ray and DVD on April 16

'Star Trek: Lower Decks' May Be Looking For a New Home After Cancellation at Paramount+

It wouldn't be the first animated 'Trek' series to move to a different streamer!

Star Trek: Lower Decks may find a new home after being cancelled at Paramount+.
Jack Quaid expressed gratitude for the show and hopes for future seasons elsewhere, praising the cast and crew for their hard work.
Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5 will premiere on Paramount+ later this year.

Star Trek: Lower Decks may have been cancelled at Paramount+ , but it may not be the end of the USS Cerritos ' mission. At least one cast member of the animated series has voiced hopes that, like fellow Paramount+ castaway Star Trek: Prodigy , the show could find a new home. Jack Quaid , who voices Brad Boimler on the series, expressed his hopes for a pickup at another network on his Instagram: "Hopefully we find a new home, but until then please look forward to an amazing season five (airing this fall)".

Quaid also expressed his gratitude for the cast and crew behind the series:

"I can’t begin to tell you what an honor it’s been to be a part of this show and the Star Trek universe at large. I am unbelievably grateful for 5 awesome seasons with this wonderful family. I want to thank each and every person who put so much of their hard work and talent into every episode. You are AMAZING. The good news is that everyone who makes Lower Decks LOVES making Lower Decks . I could play Boimler for 17 more seasons. No joke. I’m serious. I love that purple-haired nerd."

In addition to voicing Boimler on all five seasons of the show, Quaid also played Boimler in live-action on " Those Old Scientists ," a crossover episode with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .

How Was 'Star Trek: Prodigy' Saved?

Star Trek: Prodigy , a CG-animated series aimed at a younger audience than most Star Trek fare (although still loaded with nods to Trek lore) debuted on Paramount+ in 2021. Starring a crew of teenage misfit aliens and a holographic artificial intelligence patterned after Admiral Kathryn Janeway ( Kate Mulgrew ) as they attempt to escape a fanatical dictator in an experimental prototype ship, it was a hit with critics and audiences and was renewed for a second season.

In 2023, however, it was cancelled and wiped entirely from Paramount+ , even as its unaired second season was nearly completed. It came at a time when studios, facing the end of the streaming bubble, were beginning to not only cancel series but wipe them entirely from their streaming services as a tax write-off. After an extensive letter-writing campaign by fans , the series was sold to Netflix ; the first season of the series is available to stream now, while the second season is expected to be released later this year.

Star Trek: Lower Decks chronicles the adventures of the Cerritos , a Starfleet support vessel assigned to less glamorous duties than the likes of the Enterprise . In addition to Quaid, it also stars Tawny Newsome , Noël Wells , Eugene Cordero , Dawnn Lewis , Jerry O'Connell , Fred Tatasciore , and Gillian Vigman . Star Trek: Lower Decks ' fifth (and for now, final) season will premiere on Paramount+ later this year . Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
