What does prose and script mean?

That’s simply the style of writing used for the particular game.  Prose means it’s written in regular language like you would find in a novel or short story.  Script refers to a specific role playing syntax:

Character: (Thoughts.) ::action:: “Dialogue.” =/\=Communicator dialogue.=/\=

Still don’t get it?  Here’s the same line written in each format:

{Planet’s Surface}

John picked the communicator up from the table. He wasn’t sure what to do. “Here goes nothing,” he muttered before speaking into the device.  “Bridge, this is John.”

John: ::picks up communicator from the table:: (I’m not sure what to do.) “Here goes nothing.” =/\=Bridge, this is John.=/\=

As you can see, the {Location} tag is frequently used in both formats. Also, the exact syntax will likely vary from sim to sim. Here’s an article from Ongoing Worlds that explains script format in more detail

What’s the difference between traditional and open role playing?

In traditional role playing, you only write for your own character without explicit permission or guidance from other players, generally speaking.  This is how almost all Star Trek simming games usually work.

Open role playing differs in that everyone writes for everyone.  All characters are at your disposal for use with every post.  While this is uncommon in the role playing community, you’ll see a higher number of open role playing sims in Independence Fleet.  Here’s an article from Ongoing Worlds that explains open role playing in more detail.

Application - Part 2

In this section, we'd like to get an idea of your initial ability to write in a narrative style. We are not concerned with your Star Trek knowledge, but more with your ability to write interesting and engaging prose. We are attempting to weed out time-wasters, not inexperienced simmers.

Using the duty post you are applying for (e.g. – Medical officer, Security officer, etc.), show us how your character would handle the situation below. Your answer should be in a narrative style (like a short story) and you are free to make up any further details about the incident and local area. Include your character’s personal thoughts, emotions, observations and interaction with other team members (who can also be made up).

You are assigned to an away team which is beaming down to what was once a colonized planet. On arrival, you find the local area has been abandoned.

» Be creative and be detailed ! Remember we're seeing through the eyes of your character. Help us understand what it feels like for your character to be in this situation. What are they seeing, smelling, hearing, and feeling? » Applications that do not have an answer to this question will not be considered. » Minimum 250 words, maximum 500 words – We need to get a clear picture of your writing ability but more is not better and will slow down processing your application. » Proofread your entry before submitting. » Samples that are written by AI/ChatGPT will not be considered. We're a writing group – you will be expected to write three times a week. If you can't submit a creative, original, self-written sample, you will not enjoy participating with us. » We suggest you keep a copy of your response saved on your computer BEFORE you submit it.

Welcome aboard the SS Axel!

We are a Star Trek PBEM RPG group, that has been in existence since 2006. In our type of game (also known as interactive fan fiction) players write out their characters actions and moves and combine them with those of others to create an ongoing story. Players don't need to be available at the same time, just willing to work together towards a common narrative which is constructed through email. You may like our game if you enjoy creative thinking, creative writing, world building, and social interaction via the internet.

Our group fills a unique niche in Star Trek because we don't follow the usual formula of Trekdom. Our stories take place on a civilian ship operating in the vicinity of the the Starfleet installation known as Sentinel Station. But we also travel space far beyond this base and encounter our own strange new worlds.

The rules of Starfleet are not our rules. We are independent. We are free.

Our goal is to appeal to those who may not want to play a character on a Federation Starship but still love Star Trek. We draw inspiration from Star Trek, Firefly, and The Orville, as well as other great ship based scifi franchises past and present. We aim to misbehave and to have fun within the Star Trek: Borderlands Universe.

This site provides you with many of the details that we use on a regular basis to help us visualize a world that is not our own. This world is way more fun!

"Rules-Lite" Star Trek?

I recently played in a Star Trek PBEM. It was more of a group-writing activity, as opposed to an rpg, which has been my usual experience with Star Trek PBEM's. This time I realized: what could make it better is some hit points and some skill rolls. (No one is going to willingly write a scene where their ultra-cool player blows their transporter roll.) With hit points, the writers would feel their characters could actually die "fairly," as opposed to the whim of the Gamemaster. Anyway, what I'm asking: Is there a super-lite system that I could use to facilitate these kinds of things into a group-writing PBEM? Many of the players in the one I mentioned do not play rpg's, so I think the system would have to be simple and (ideally) open source. Ideally something that fits with Star Trek.

Definitions of rules-light differ greatly. I consider Cinematic Unisystem to be in the more rules-heavy end of rules-light, and it works wonderfully well for Star Trek. If you make extensive use of the lack of GM-die rolling, it could become even more rules light. Drama points are also very Trek-useful.

Lolcat Keeper

The Free Universal (FU) rpg would work. It doesn't have 'hit points', but is lite enough to meld okay with freeformists, and great for pbp.

A lot probably depends on how you think the game will go... If most sessions consist of the PCs beaming to some new planet or alien ship, exploring and then fighting alien lizard-men then I would say something like PDQ would work best (probably the latest version, PDQ# or PDQ2). It's extremely rules light and it's focus on player-defined traits will help to individualize players and come up with bizarre alien traits. If most sessions consist of the PCs standing at the ship's bridge, staring at something on the big screen and trading concerned technobabble then I'd probably say Fate. The aspect system is a good way for multiple characters to contribute to a scene where no one is actually doing much...one guy scans the "insert thing here" (declaring aspects related to weaknesses or learning it's existing aspects), the other guy diverts power to "X" (adding aspects to the ship to help defend or attack), one guy is thrown across the room when his console inevitably explodes, and then they trade the various "tags" for the aspects created to the captain to actually attack, resolve or otherwise deal with the problem of the week.

20 Year Hero! Feb 19, 2012. #2.
