Star Trek: Picard season 2: story, trailers, release date and everything we know

The stardate for Star Trek: Picard season 2 is March 2022

Star Trek Picard

Star Trek: Picard season 2 release date

Star trek: picard season 2 trailers, star trek: picard season 2 plot, star trek: picard season 2 cast.

Star Trek : Picard season 2 has a stardate! The ongoing mission of Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (retired) will resume on Paramount Plus in March 2022.

Jean-Luc will be joined on his sophomore voyages by some familiar faces from The Next Generation era – both friends and foes.

Most excitingly, John de Lancie is back to cause trouble as the omnipotent Q, but we’ll also see returns for the Borg Queen (now played by Annie Wersching) and Whoopi Goldberg’s Guinan. Brent Spiner, best known for playing android officer Data, is also back in a new, but as-yet-unidentified, role.

The Star Trek: Picard season 2 plot is set to take the former captain of the USS Enterprise-D where he’s never gone before – our present. He’ll travel back to 2024 to fix a 24th century that’s turned into a “totalitarian nightmare”, and he’s taking Cris Rios, Agnes Jurati, Seven of Nine and the rest of the newly assembled crew of La Sirena along for the ride.

With Picard’s latest adventure approaching Paramount Plus at something close to warp speed, we’ve analyzed Starfleet’s databanks to tell you everything you need to know about Star Trek: Picard season 2.

As a certain former Enterprise captain was so fond of saying: engage!

Spoilers lie ahead if you're yet to watch Star Trek: Picard season 1 .

Release date: Star Trek: Picard season 2 will debut for US viewers on Thursday March 3, 2022. It'll stream on Paramount Plus in the US and Amazon Prime Video in other territories.

Story: Jean-Luc Picard and the ragtag crew of La Sirena travel back in time to the 21st century to fix the timeline – with a bit of help/hindrance (depending on your point of view) from the god-like Q, Guinan and a Borg Queen.

Is there a trailer? A new Star Trek: Picard season 2 promo was unveiled in January 2022, in addition to the trailer that launched at September 2021's virtual Star Trek Day event, and two earlier teasers.

Star Trek: Picard season 2 release date: March 2022

Star Trek: Picard season 2 was originally supposed to go before the cameras in June 2020 – just a couple of months after the first season ended – until Covid-19 put everything on hiatus. Production on the 10-episode run eventually got under way in California in February 2021.

That delay means we'll have to wait a little longer than we'd originally hoped to see Jean-Luc back in the captain's chair, but our patience will soon pay off.

Star Trek.com confirmed in January 2022 that the Star Trek: Picard season 2 release date is Thursday March 3, 2022 . New instalments of the 10-episode run will be available on Paramount Plus every week and – as with season 1 – the show will stream on Amazon Prime Video the following day.

This is slightly later than the February 2022 launch date announced at September's Star Trek Day event. The tiny hold-up means Picard's second season will overlap for a few weeks with Star Trek: Discovery season 4 , which returns from a brief hiatus on February 10.

This is undoubtedly good news for Trek fans, however – this brief double hit of boldly going harks back to the glory days of the 1990s, when The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager ruled the stars.

Star Trek: Picard season 2 trailers: see Guinan and Brent Spiner’s latest Trek role

The first teaser for Star Trek: Picard season 2 was released during the First Contact Day event in April 2021. Alongside numerous Next Generation Easter eggs (including a model of Picard's first starship command, the USS Stargazer) the major reveal was that John de Lancie will be reprising his role as omnipotent superbeing Q.

"The trial never ends..." So excited to announce that I will be returning to visit my dear old friend Jean-Luc Picard in season 2 of Picard! @StarTrekOnPPlus @paramountplus @CTVSciFi @primevideouk @SirPatStew #StarTrekPicard #StarTrek pic.twitter.com/DOeBT8NkUW April 5, 2021

A more full-featured trailer featuring Stewart, de Lancie and other members of the cast was released on June 16, 2021. It doesn't give much away about the plot, other than suggesting that Picard and company are trying to stop a dark future from coming to pass.

We learned even more about Star Trek: Picard season 2 in the longer trailer unveiled at Star Trek Day – including a sighting of the Borg Queen...

And Paramount Plus have continued to spoil us, bringing out yet another trailer in January 2022. This one sees Whoopi Goldberg reprising her Next Generation role as Guinan – her request for “some tea, Earl Grey, piping hot” suggests she hasn't forgotten Picard's beverage of choice – and former TNG regular Brent Spiner playing a new character who looks a lot like an older version of Data. The question is, why is he talking with professional trickster Q?

Star Trek: Picard season 2 plot: Jean-Luc's new mission involves traveling back to 2024

star trek picard season 2 episodes

Red alert! Big spoilers for Star Trek: Picard season 1 follow – change course now if you haven’t seen it yet.

Jean-Luc Picard will be a new man in Star Trek – literally. When Picard’s human body succumbed to terminal Irumodic Syndrome, his consciousness was transferred into to an artificial ‘golem’ body created by Dr Altan Soong, the biological son of Data’s ‘father’, cybernetics genius Dr Noonian Soong. Although Soong Jr made it clear that the new body is effectively identical to the old one – it will still age and die, for example – it’s going to have an effect on the way the 90-something character approaches his life.

“I wanted to know exactly what they had done to me when they saved [Picard]’s life,” Patrick Stewart said in an interview with Gold Derby . “Was there any chance that this might have an impact on Picard’s personality or behaviour? [Executive producers Terry Matalas and Akiva Goldsman] felt it probably wouldn’t, but it lies there as an option should we need to take it. But also there is another human aspect being introduced in season 2, which I am not allowed to talk about. But it’s going to have, I think, quite an impact.”

With the first year’s main story arcs about a the Romulan Zhat Vash’s efforts to wipe out all Synthetic life and the reclaimed Borg Cube (now crash-landed on the Synthetic homeworld of Coppelius) now seemingly done and dusted, Star Trek: Picard season 2 is primed to seek out all-new worlds – and civilisations.

“Despite 178 episodes of TNG [The Next Generation] and four feature films, there are events coming up in season 2 that have never been seen before,” Stewart teased at First Contact Day.

It’s clear that not everything will be new, however, now that we know Q is back in Jean-Luc Picard’s orbit. A member of the omnipotent Q continuum , the mischievous character cropped up regularly in The Next Generation (and spin-off shows Deep Space Nine and Voyager) to make life as awkward as he could for Starfleet. He always took a particular interest in Picard, having put humanity on trial in TNG pilot ‘Encounter at Farpoint’ – an arc that was only partially resolved in series finale ‘All Good Things’.

It looks like Q will be continuing his self-convened legal proceedings in Star Trek: Picard season 2. “Do you recall what I said, Jean-Luc, when last we parted ways?” Q asks Picard in the latest season 2 trailer. “The trial never ends.” Not only do we learn that Picard and Q haven't met in the more-than-two-decades since Jean-Luc's days on the Enterprise-D, we know that the former Starfleet officer is “way too old for [Q’s] bulls**t.”

“Q's arrival is, as it often was, is unexpected,” said Stewart. “But it also comes at a shattering moment in the episode. And I do mean a shattering moment. Whether it's directly connected to Q or not, I'm not sure, but there is significant trauma. And in fact at the moment, I'm working on how the trauma of this moment hangs around Picard for quite a substantial part of the episode and then – there [Q] is.”

“In the same way that we have tried to do with Picard himself, Terry Matalas and I don’t pretend that the interstitial years [between The Next Generation and Picard] didn’t happen,” executive producer Akiva Goldsman told the Hollywood Reporter . “Obviously, chronological time is less relevant to Q. But we definitely chose to follow suit when it came to him, so as we tried to evolve the other characters, the same is true of Q. This is a show of a different time with actors of a different age. We’re now talking about the issues that come up in the last [stage] of your life. We wanted a Q that could play in that arena with Picard.”

Goldsman also described Q as a “trickster god” and expanded on the importance of Picard’s relationship with Q. “There’s a lot of discussion in [Star Trek: Picard] season 2 about the nature of connectedness,” he said. “Q’s kind of a great lightning rod for that because in some ways he’s one of Picard’s deepest… not deep in the same way that Riker is or Beverly Crusher was but in its own [way, a] uniquely, profoundly deep relationship.”

Jean-Luc Picard with his new crew: Soji Asha, Elnor and Dr Agnes Jurati.

Picard's relationship with Q may be deep, but it's also problematic. In the Star Trek: Picard season 2 trailer that debuted in September 2021, Jean-Luc says that "Q went back in time and turned our world into a totalitarian nightmare,” amid scenes of a drastically changed 24th century. Seven of Nine – now without the residual Borg implants on her face – points out that “time has been broken”. Picard adds that, “The only way to heal our future is to go back and repair the past.”

This means a trip back to 2024, where Picard and his newly formed crew will have “three days before the future is changed irrevocably” – and Seven of Nine will have to take a crash course in driving a car.

Perhaps the biggest surprise unveiled in the Star Trek: Picard season 2 trailers is that Jean-Luc's route back to the 21st century involves the Borg Queen – though it's yet to be revealed whether this is the Borg Queen from Star Trek: First Contact, the one presumed dead after Voyager's return from the Delta Quadrant, or some other incarnation. It could just be that we're guilty of thinking in [merely] three-dimensional terms...

Whichever Borg Queen it is, time travel is familiar territory for Star Trek, the most famous examples coming in Star Trek 4 (where Kirk and crew travelled back to 1980s San Francisco) and First Contact (where Picard fought the Borg in 2063). Expect plenty of culture clash comedy/drama as Jean-Luc and his highly sophisticated 24th century companions get used to slumming it present-day Earth.

One major difference between Star Trek: Picard season 2 and its first year is that this time Jean-Luc – now long-retired from Starfleet – has his own crew. We probably shouldn't be surprised, then, if the new season feels more of an ensemble show, with more time devoted to Cris Rios, Raffi Musiker, Soji Asha, Dr Agnes Jurati, Elnor and Seven of Nine. Integrating all of them – and new characters – into the narrative will be one of the new season’s hardest missions.

“It has to be focused on Picard but have room for all the other characters,” season 1 showrunner Michael Chabon told the Hollywood Reporter . It’s never going to be just a show about the crew of a starship that's part of Starfleet and everyone's wearing uniforms and they're flying around, encountering alien life and weird planets. Those are the challenges we face going into season 2, and I'm so excited about the story we’ve come up with.”

And for any viewers who were left underwhelmed by the season 1 finale, the production team have hopefully found a solution going into Star Trek: Picard season 2.

“Figure out the end earlier!” Goldsman said when the Hollywood Reporter asked what the team had learned from their first year. “If you’re going to do a serialized show, you have the whole story before you start shooting. It’s more like a movie in that way – you better know the end of your third act before you start filming your first scene.”

Surely that's good advice for every screenwriter.

Star Trek: Picard season 2 cast: Q, Guinan, the Borg Queen and other returning characters

This is the crew manifest for Star Trek: Picard season 2 as it stands:

  • Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard
  • Alison Pill as Dr Agnes Jurati
  • Isa Briones as Soji Asha
  • Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker
  • Santiago Cabrera as Cris Rios
  • Evan Evagora as Elnor
  • Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine
  • John de Lancie as Q
  • Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan
  • Annie Wersching as the Borg Queen
  • Brent Spiner as a new member of the Soong dynasty

The show was always built around the star power of Sir Patrick Stewart, and we don't expect that to change second time out. He’ll be joined in the Star Trek: Picard season 2 cast by his regular La Sirena crew: Michelle Hurd (Raffi Musiker), Santiago Cabrera (Cris Rios), Evan Evagora (Elnor), Alison Pill (Dr Agnes Jurati), and Isa Briones (Soji Asha). Star Trek: Voyager veteran Jeri Ryan will also be back as former Borg Seven of Nine.

It was confirmed at September's Star Trek Day that Seven will come face-to-face with another former member of the Collective, as the trailer introduced the latest iteration of the Borg Queen. Annie Wersching (Tess in the The Last of Us videogame) takes over the role from Alice Krige (Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Voyager) and Susanna Thompson (Star Trek: Voyager).

In addition to the returning John de Lancie as Q, there are some other The Next Generation veterans heading back to the Final Frontier.

The first is Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan.

Stewart formally invited his former co-star to join the Star Trek: Picard season 2 cast during an appearance on Goldberg’s US TV show, The View . “It was wonderful having you, and we cannot wait to have you with us again one more time," said Stewart.

.@SirPatStew officially invites @WhoopiGoldberg to join season two of #StarTrekPicard: “It was wonderful having you, and we cannot wait to have you with us again one more time.” https://t.co/f8u2wbJuik #StarTrek pic.twitter.com/mxOtyJxF63 January 22, 2020

Officially the bartender in Ten Forward, the Enterprise-D’s bar/relaxation area, Guinan (a centuries-old El-Aurian) was Picard’s confidante. She also had little time for Q, so it’ll be intriguing if they end up colliding with each other in the new season.

And although Brent Spiner said he'd played the android Data for the last time in Star Trek: Picard's first season – “I wouldn't really entertain the idea of doing [Data, an ageless character] again because I just don't think it would be realistic,” he told TV Guide – he is back in season 2. So who's he playing?

“I can tell you I'm not Data,” Spiner told Inverse . “I know they haven't revealed much about me being in the show. I can tell you I'm a member of the Soong family. And, that I'm not playing a character I've ever played before.”

In the words of Data himself, this is "most intriguing".

Alongside his most famous role as the Enterprise's resident artificial human, Spiner has also played Data's android ‘brothers’ Lore and B-4 – as well as their creator, Dr Noonian Soong and his 22nd century ancestor, Arik Soong. He also appeared in Star Trek: Picard season 1 as a new member of the family (and AI expert), Dr Altan Inigo Soong.

So who is this mysterious new character? We're ruling out a new model android, because if Spiner's too old to play Data, he's too old to play another robot. But could the character be Altan's human brother in the Picard era, a new person in the new, alternative, dystopian 24th century, or a great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparent (approx) living in the 21st century? The latest trailer certainly suggests the latter and – seeing as both Picard and Soji (one of Data's daughters) have connections to Data – they'd surely have an interest in meeting an ancestor.

As for the rest of the Next Generation crew, the one star certain to return is Jonathan Frakes – though not necessarily on screen. He confirmed to TrekMovie that he’s back to direct a pair of Star Trek: Picard season 2 episodes, but claimed that he wasn’t sure whether he’d be back on screen as Captain William Riker after his memorable appearances in the debut season.

The time travel element of the story may make make bringing the Next Generation cast harder this time out, but if Riker does return, it’s a safe bet Marina Sirtis will be back as his screen wife, Deanna Troi.

But what about Worf, Geordi LaForge and Dr Crusher?

Thanks to the amount of time the role requires in the make-up chair, Michael Dorn said he’d only be up for returning as the Federation’s resident Klingon, Worf, if it was really worthwhile.

“I’m only interested in if it’s something really interesting,” he told Inverse . “If the character was a major part of the franchise or whatever the show is. He’s not just going to show up, beat somebody up, and then go home.”

While Worf’s status is ambiguous, two cast members have seemingly ruled themselves out of a return.

In April 2021, LeVar Burton told Whoopi Goldberg on The View (via TrekMovie ) that, “I can say unequivocally that I am not doing season 2 of Picard” – though it’s important to add that he hasn’t ruled out an appearance as Geordi La Forge in a future season.

And there’ll be no return (yet) for Gates McFadden – which means that Star Trek: Picard season 2 won’t be able to explore the status of Jean-Luc’s will they/won’t they relationship with Dr Beverly Crusher.

“I’m not in the second season,” she told TrekMovie . “I’m sad that I’m not. I’m disappointed because it would have been so much fun to just work with those people. But we’ll see. I have no idea…”

But don’t give up hope just yet, because this could be a clever deployment of smoke and mirrors. Marina Sirtis claimed she wasn’t going to be in the first season of the show and look what happened there…

Cris Rios at the helm of La Sirena.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 has also been confirmd

Star Trek: Picard season 2 won't be the end of Jean-Luc's story – the show's Star Trek Day panel confirmed that a third season has been given the greenlight by Paramount Plus.

StarTrek.com confirmed in January 2022 that season 3 is currently in production, and it's likely to be the show's last. "The plan was always three,” co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman told TrekMovie .

Star Trek: Picard season 2 showrunner: there's a change at the helm

According to an interview in Variety , Michael Chabon won't be as heavily involved in season 2 of Star Trek: Picard as he was in the first. While he's shifted much of his attention to a Showtime series based on his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, however, he will continue to give notes to the writers.

"I’m still an executive producer on Picard," he said. "I’m writing two episodes. I was there breaking the second season, all the way through. I was engaged, I think, to exactly the same degree as I was on the first season."

Terry Matalas, a veteran of Twelve Monkeys and MacGyver will take over as the Star Trek: Picard season 2 co-showrunner, alongside the returning Akiva Goldsman.

Star Trek: Picard will be available to watch from February 2022, on Paramount Plus in the US and Amazon Prime Video in the rest of the world.

Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Episode 2 Review – Penance

Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard in Picard

Warning: This article contains STAR TREK: PICARD spoilers.

Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Episode 2

After a fairly low-key premiere that was primarily focused on catching us up with where our favorite characters stand emotionally following the events of Season 1, Star Trek: Picard kicks things into high gear by following through on the promise of its Season 2 trailers: Alternate realities, time travel, and trial by Q. Oh, my.

The first ten minutes of this episode are a tour de force from Star Trek: The Next Generation fan-favorite John de Lancie as he and Patrick Stewart face off in high style, flinging everything from Shakespearean references to Star Trek deep cuts at one another ( “Yesterday’s Enterprise” !) There’s even some physical violence at one point.

Yet, despite Q’s fevered ramblings about tests and atonement and the distant possibility of forgiveness, there’s still little hint as to why he’s chosen this moment to return to Picard, or what exactly he’s attempting to make his nemesis pay for. Nor is there any hint as to why our favorite weirdo god-being has chosen to alter reality in this way, or what thrusting his best frenemy into a literal dystopian nightmare is meant to teach him. Why would Q choose to save the Stargazer crew from a certain self-destruct death in order to do…this? What are they supposed to prove there? (Or learn?)

Ad – content continues below

In this warped version of the reality we know, Picard is a monster, an authoritarian warrior who revels in conquering other races and preaching the gospel of human superiority. He’s got an office full of the literal skulls of his enemies (Sarek!!!), a houseful of oppressed alien slaves, and an apparent penchant for dramatic public executions. But Picard’s personality is not the only thing in this timeline that was apparently vastly altered. Seven of Nine is Annika Hansen once more, but while her human self wasn’t assimilated by a species of cybernetic humanoids in this timeline, she still appears to have somehow been equally transformed. Here, she’s the President of the Confederation of Earth, she’s married to a man, and it seems as though she is as much of a true believer in alien eradication as Picard was.

Raffi appears to be Picard’s Chief of Security in this timeline, where Rios is a captain helping to lead an attack on Vulcan, and Elnor is a Romulan rebel, pushing back against the Confederation government. (And possibly committing some mild terrorism, I’m not super clear on that.) Even the Earth itself has changed, its skies darkened by pollution and crisscrossed by what appears to be some sort of half-finished bioshield. The only character who generally seems anything like themselves is Agnes, who is apparently a lonely anti-social scientist in every possible reality. (In this one, she has built herself a truly amazing Tomagachi-esque animated cat friend. I want one, is what I”m saying.)

Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Episode 2 – The New Timeline and Ending Explained

Star Trek: Picard's Seven and Raffi

Star Trek Picard: Creating Seven and Raffi’s Relationship

Thankfully, at least everyone remembers both who they are and the original world they come from so valuable screen real estate isn’t wasted on getting them all on the same page. Instead, we get to watch Picard, Seven, and the rest of the La Sirena team play-act at being fascists while attempting to figure out both what has happened to them and what their best path to putting the timeline to rights might be. Which is truly more entertaining than it has any right to be. Seven is probably the most terrifyingly good at her role, but it’s Agnes who steals the show for me with her hilarious off-the-cuff lying about everything from how she knows Seven to what their group of misfits was doing hanging out together in her lab with a decapitated Borg head.

(In truth, I”m honestly a bit sad that we only get one episode in this dystopian nightmare reality—watching Picard and friends try to pretend to enjoy being the worst versions of themselves was actually kind of fun.)

Alternate timelines are always fascinating narrative concepts because they allow us to see how different potential futures for characters we know and love could have been caused by the simplest of changes or different decisions. (My personal favorite example of this trope is the Doctor Who Season 4 episode “Turn Left, ” in which the fate of the Doctor and much of humanity hinges on which direction a particular character turns at an intersection.) So many things go into the formation of a person and our lives are full of these tiny moments, that seem so unremarkable at the time but that might contain the seeds of multiple futures.

On Picard , we don’t know what specific change Q has made to the past in order to bring about this specific dystopian nightmare, merely the location and time (Los Angeles, 2024) in which whatever it is takes place. Therefore, our faves will need to embrace some Star Trek: The Original Series- style time travel in order to stop whatever it is from happening and thereby restore the world they knew. (And presumably without, as so many science fiction shows have taught us, drastically changing anything else.)

For viewers, it’s understandable to wonder how the human race and the optimistic ideals of the Federation could possibly have become so corrupted that our society turned into…this. After all, it’s difficult to picture how any version of the man we currently know as Picard could possibly grow up to be a bloodthirsty fascist who supports the eradication of all non-human species in an attempt to conquer the galaxy. But, since the La Sirena crew is now traveling back to a time that’s roughly 300 years before Picard existed, it would appear anything is possible. A Picard shaped by a different history, raised to embrace a different idea of what human ideals are could well have existed, had someone, somewhere made different choices when it comes to creating the world he was born into.

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

Though why Q seems to hold our Picard responsible for the different world that shaped those choices is….something I haven’t entirely figured out yet. The name of this episode is “Penance,” but it’s not super clear who is meant to be performing such a rite, nor whose sins they are meant to be answering for. (Are they Q’s in some way? And how does his frazzled, seemingly desperate demeanor play into this?)

The reappearance of the Borg Queen—not the hooded, mysterious version from last week’s premiere , but a figure who feels much more familiar to us—who knows of Annika’s assimilation and that Picard was once Locutus could be a hint that the answers lie somewhere in the thematic questions posed by “The Star Gazer,” about whether or not it’s possible to trust those you once considered your greatest, most hated enemies. As a series, Picard has been especially interested in wrestling with both Jean-Luc and Seven’s lingering Borg-related traumas and it seems likely that, since they’re both now forced to time travel with one, that is something that will continue in Season 2. But how her presence will help or hinder their trip back to the past remains to be seen.

Star Trek: Picard Season 2, Episode 2, 'Penance,' Recap & Spoilers

Picard and his friends acclimate to the nightmarish reality crafted by Q as Star Trek: Picard Season 2 continues. Here's a spoiler-filled recap.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Picard Season 2, Episode 2, "Penance," streaming now on Paramount+ .

After enjoying a period of peace and taking their lives into new, interesting directions, Admiral Jean-Luc Picard and his friends were confronted by the resurgent Borg Collective , with the seemingly resurrected Borg Queen at the helm. Just as Picard believed he endured certain death to prevent the Borg from assimilating Starfleet, he found himself face-to-face with his longtime frenemy Q in a new vision of reality with a decidedly more ominous edge than the home he briefly left behind, setting the stage for Star Trek: Picard Season 2.

As Picard acclimates to this twisted vision of reality , noticing Earth's climate is struggling, a more sinister Q confirms that he not only intervened but that his latest challenge to humanity uses Picard himself as its foundation. When Picard realizes that something has personally gone wrong with Q, the omnipotent being reacts harshly before touring Picard through his new home. He then reveals that Picard is this reality's most bloodthirsty, decorated officer in the Confederation of Earth, presenting him with a trophy room of all his fallen enemies. Q enigmatically implies this timeline serves as Picard's penance, and he will have to offer his forgiveness to someone to rectify things this time.

Seven of Nine awakens to learn that she has never been assimilated in this reality, making her body completely free of the Borg Collective's cybernetic implants. Seven is startled to discover that she is married in this world and has recently taken power as the President of the Confederation, personally overseeing an ongoing war for the conquest of Vulcan. Chris Rios is the in middle of the conflict, serving as a colonel for the Confederation and coming to his senses during a harrowing space battle against the Vulcan Defense Force. Realizing Rios has retained his memories of the past reality, Seven summons him to meet with her privately while they both maintain their cover.

In slums on Earth, Elnor finds himself among a group of insurgents carrying out terrorist attacks on major cities in reprisal for atrocities committed on different planets. Elnor is cornered by the military only to be rescued by Raffi Musiker, who also retains her memories of the prime reality and takes him in custody to spare him and maintain their ruse before the authorities. Seven and her husband meet with Agnes Jurati, who begins to recall her past life before she realizes she has been placed in charge of monitoring the captive Borg Queen. The Queen senses that the timeline has been tampered with, as Seven's husband grows suspicious of this and how the Queen addresses his wife.

Reuniting at the Confederation headquarters, Picard deduces that Q changed something in the past to cause this reality rather than creating a parallel dimension and, through a conversation with the Borg Queen, pinpoints this divergence to a single event in Los Angeles 2024. With time travel needed to restore the timeline , the group reluctantly admits they need the Queen to precisely calculate when to arrive in the past to stop Q. However, this plan is further complicated by the Queen set to be personally executed by Picard before an adoring public to mark the complete eradication of the Borg.

Jurati and Rios calculate a way to transport the Queen and the rest of the group directly to Rios' ship, interrupting the execution. As Jurati plugs the Queen into the ship's power source, the group is boarded by a Confederation strike force led by Seven's husband. Elnor is grievously wounded in the resulting skirmish, with everyone else held at gunpoint as Picard is proclaimed a traitor to the Confederation, threatening to end this mission to restore reality before it can even truly begin in earnest.

Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Had To Be Rewritten For A Weird Reason

Jean-Luc Picard smirking

"Star Trek: Picard" became nothing short of a nostalgic small-screen sensation during its debut season. The set of episodes served as a fine addition to the "Star Trek" canon, successfully building on Captain Jean-Luc Picard's (Sir Patrick Stewart) already expansive timeline  in interesting ways, and brought along no shortage of callbacks and references to the beloved "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Thus, it's no surprise that two more seasons came to fruition in short order. However, the second season turned out a bit differently than originally planned, with the minds at Paramount+ requesting rewrites for a rather odd reason.

"We wrote nine episodes at one point and the network was like, 'No, we don't really understand this, it's a bit too sci-fi, it's a bit too in-Star Trek,'" shared "Picard" co-showrunner Terry Matalas during a conversation with the Master Replicas Collectors Club. He shared that the supposedly too-"Star Trek"-for-Paramount+ version of "Picard" Season 2 featured Romulans, as well as Guinan's (Whoopi Goldberg, Ito Aghayere) Los Angeles bar serving as a front for aliens of all kinds to arrive on Earth in secret. Sadly, the higher-ups thought such ideas were a step or two too far (via TrekMovie.com ).

As it turns out, "Picard" Season 2 went through several versions and revisions, and not just because of Paramount+'s demands.

COVID-19 also impacted the story of Picard Season 2

As Terry Matalas explained in his interview with the Master Replicas Collectors Club, "Star Trek: Picard" Season 2 underwent several changes before the team settled on its final form. He explained, "There's actually many, many different versions of Season 2. I think you can kind of feel when you watch Season 2 that there's a lot of different ideas here." While several factors led to these sweeping changes in the second batch of episodes, among the biggest was the virus that changed the film industry forever, COVID-19 .

"COVID beat us up. We had to rewrite [Season 2]. We had to try to find ways to make things cheaper," Matalas recalled, noting that the pandemic and its effect on Season 2 even adversely impacted the production of Season 3. According to union rules and general health guidelines, if one person on set got sick, production halted in the blink of an eye and wouldn't resume until they were cleared. The "Picard" team eventually split to work on the remainder of Season 2 and start up Season 3 simultaneously. "It wasn't until very late in the game after we had shot the first half of Season 2 before we split off [to work on Season 3], you're running out of time," Matalas said.

Thankfully, both Season 2 and Season 3 of "Star Trek: Picard" reached the finish line and concluded the titular science fiction icon's story in grand fashion. Then again,  "Star Trek" movie rumors make Picard's return seem more possible than once thought, so perhaps his tale isn't over just yet.

Star trek: discovery brings back picard season 3’s portal weapon with a twist.

Star Trek: Discovery introduced an updated version of the portal weapon used by Vadic in Star Trek: Picard season 3.

  • A handheld portal weapon featured in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 premiere is a portable version of a Vadic's Star Trek: Picard season 3 technology.
  • Moll and L'ak use the portal weapon against Captain Burnham, setting the stage for an action-packed galactic treasure hunt.
  • Uncertainty surrounds the fate of Section 31 in Star Trek: Discovery's 32nd century.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 1 - "Red Directive" A new version of the portal weapon from Star Trek: Picard season 3 made an appearance in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. In Picard season 3, a portal weapon was used by Vadic (Amanda Plummer) and her renegade Changelings in their attack on the United Federation of Planets. The Changelings stole the experimental technology from Starfleet's Daystrom Station and used it to destroy a Starfleet Recruitment Center as a precursor to a much larger attack. Vadic's powerful warship, the Shrike, was also equipped with a portal weapon that Vadic used in a battle against the USS Titan-A.

With Star Trek: Discovery's 32nd-century setting, technology has improved significantly since the 25th century of Star Trek: Picard . Although the Federation of the far future was nearly destroyed by the Burn, they managed to hold onto and continue to develop much of their technology. Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew, for example, regularly use advanced personal transporters, phasers, and programmable matter. Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive" reveals that even the non-affiliated couriers of the 32nd century have access to advanced technology, including a handheld portal weapon.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Star trek: discovery makes picard’s portal weapon portable & handheld, moll & la'k use a handheld portal weapon against captain burnham..

Star Trek: Discovery's season 5 premiere sends the USS Discovery on a galactic treasure hunt in a race against two couriers, Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis). After Moll and L'ak raid an 800-year-old Romulan ship, they find a traditional puzzle box containing a book that could lead to the creators of humanoid life, introduced in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, "The Chase." Captain Burnham and her team arrive just after Moll and L'ak have taken the artifact, but not before they have made their escape. The two groups exchange phaser fire, but Moll and L'ak possess more advanced weapons.

In Star Trek: Picard season 3, Vadic used her portal weapon to send the Titan back into a dangerous nebula and to send the Titan's photon torpedoes back at them, causing massive damage.

When Captain Burnham tells the two couriers to hand over the puzzle box, L'ak pulls out a small disc and tosses it at Michael. As Moll and L'ak make their escape, the disc explodes, creating a portal and a massive hold in the deck of the Romulan ship. Burnham is sucked out into space, but her programmable matter suit deploys just in time. Moll and L'ak's portal weapon works a bit differently than Vadic's and, thankfully, only delays Michael, but it remains to be seen what other unique tech the two couriers may possess. See Moll and La'k's portal weapon in the clip below:

Does Section 31 Still Exist In Star Trek: Discovery’s 32nd Century?

Could section 31 have survived the burn and the near-collapse of the federation.

The portal weapon used by Vadic in Star Trek: Picard season 3 was housed at Daystrom Station, a Starfleet black site where Section 31's most dangerous technology was kept off-the-books. The weapon Moll and L'ak possess do resemble those of Section 31. Although Star Trek: Discovery explored the Section 31 of the 23rd century in its first two seasons, the show has not acknowledged whether Section 31 exists in the 32nd century. Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) joined Section 31 in Discovery season 2, but her upcoming film, Star Trek: Section 31 , will take place in the early 24th century, also known as Star Trek's "lost era."

One of the most mysterious characters in Star Trek: Discovery , Dr. Kovich's (David Cronenberg) exact role remains unclear, leaving the possibility open that he could be involved with Section 31 or its 32nd-century equivalent.

Considering the Burn destroyed numerous Starfleet ships and decimated the Federation in 3069, it seems unlikely that Section 31 would be a priority as the Federation rebuilds. None of the higher-ups introduced so far in Discovery have made any mention of Section 31, even with the multiple galaxy-threatening events the Federation has faced. The black market appears to the thriving in the 32nd century, however, so a covert Starfleet Intelligence organization would likely prove useful. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 could still reveal something about Section 31, but perhaps the black ops organization has become a thing of Star Trek's past.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 episodes 1 and 2 recap and review - let's fly

Happy Star Trek: Discovery Return Day for those who celebrate it!

Strap in and crank up the warp drive because Star Trek: Discovery has just launched into its fifth and final season, and let me tell you, it's setting phasers to "mind-blowing." This isn't just another voyage into the final frontier - it's the grand finale that promises to take us further than we've ever gone before. With Commander Michael Burnham at the helm, the USS Discovery is not just exploring strange new worlds; it's delving deep into the heart of what it means to be a part of this vast, cosmic tapestry.

According to everything I've heard from the excellent and talented starts Sonequa Martin-Green , Mary Wiseman, Doug Jones, David Ajala , and co-showrunners Michelle Paradise and Alex Kurtzman , this final season is about to take "boldly going" to a whole new level.

As the curtain rises on this epic conclusion, the stakes are higher, the aliens are weirder, and the plot twists? Let's just say they're twistier than a double helix nebula. Whether you've been on board since the maiden voyage or you're just beaming in, this final season of Star Trek: Discovery is crafting a legacy that will resonate across the galaxy. It's not just a mission; it's a journey - a journey that challenges the crew, the Federation, and fans alike to discover what lies beyond the stars and within themselves.

Let's talk about the two-episode season premiere, shall we?

SPOILER WARNING FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T WATCHED "RED DIRECTIVE" AND "UNDER THE TWIN MOONS"

Episode 1 review - "Red Directive"

The episode kicks off with Captain Michael Burnham quite literally riding the waves of warp on the hull of a starship. As she communicates with Saru, we learn she's on a mission to recover something of vital importance stolen from a vault, only for things to take a nosedive into "imminent warp failure" territory. Flashback to four hours earlier, and we're mingling at a Federation Headquarters soiree, with Burnham rubbing elbows with Discovery's finest, including Paul Stamets and Hugh Culber, and catching up with the now Starfleet Academy professor Sylvia Tilly. Amid "Tonic 2161" cocktails and bittersweet farewells to the Spore Drive program, President Rillak and ever-so-handsome Admiral Vance drop a bombshell on Burnham: a mission classified under "Red Directive," involving an 800-year-old science vessel and a vital security threat to the Federation.

The Discovery crew, now briefed and beaming with determination, sets course for an uninhabited planet to investigate an abandoned Romulan vessel - a mission that quickly turns south as they encounter identity-concealing thieves, Moll and L’ak, and a near-mummified Romulan corpse. The stakes skyrocket when the thieves make a dramatic escape, leaving Burnham stranded on their decloaking ship as it jumps to warp. The episode shifts gears with a high-stakes chase, clever misdirections, and a tractor-beam tug-of-war that would make even Captain Kirk sweat. Enter handsome devil Cleveland "Book" Booker, brought in for his unique insights as Burnham and crew pursue the thieves across the desert planet Q’Mau, leading to a marketplace showdown, a high-octane sand runner chase, and an avalanche-induced crisis that puts the entire city at risk. As Discovery and the USS Antares heroically shield the settlement, Burnham and her team are left pondering the implications of the thieves’ mysterious Romulan puzzle box and the ancient, powerful technology it hints at - technology connected to the Progenitors and the very origin of life in the galaxy. This is a nice little nod to Star Trek: The Next Generation 's episode "The Chase". Five-year-old me squealed at the connection.

With Saru contemplating a future as a Federation ambassador (and a marriage proposal from T’Rina), and Stamets reflecting on his legacy, "Red Directive" is not just a thrilling start to Discovery's final season; it's a love letter to the enduring themes of Star Trek. The chase for the Progenitors' technology, wrapped in the legacy of Jean-Luc Picard's adventures, sets the stage for a season that promises to explore the depths of space, the bonds of family, and the pursuit of knowledge that has always been at the heart of Star Trek.

Episode 2 review - "Under the Twin Moons"

This episode takes us on a ride through the stars that’s more twisty than a barrel of Tribbles.

Captain Michael Burnham kicks things off with a deep space musing about life, the universe, and everything Progenitors. Cut to a scene where Burnham and the gang find themselves in the principal's office, aka a hearing with President Rillak, where they're chewing over Captain Rayner's wild west approach to space diplomacy. Spoiler alert: not everyone's a fan. Meanwhile, Booki s having a heart-to-heart with his cat, Queen Grudge, proving once again that in space, even your pet has royal status.

Next up, we're off to Lyric, a planet with more history than a Vulcan's bookshelf and the potential resting place of some seriously old-school tech courtesy of the Progenitors. Think of it as the universe's most epic treasure hunt, with Burnham and her space posse decoding ancient riddles, dodging killer drones (because what's a treasure hunt without a little peril?), and racing against the clock to unearth secrets that could redefine life as we know it.

On this planet of puzzles and peril, Burnham and "Action" Saru (Doug Jones) – yeah, that's his nickname now, courtesy of Jet Reno, and it's sticking – are Indiana Jones-ing their way through ancient ruins and drone attacks. These aren't your garden-variety drones, either - they're the galaxy's most unwelcoming committee, armed to the teeth and ready to explode at the first sign of grave robbing. Back on the USS Discovery, the crew's putting their heads together to crack the code of the Romulan scientist's diary and figure out where the Progenitors’ tech is hiding. It’s like the Federation's version of a book club, but with more at stake than just snacks and gossip. Meanwhile, Book's playing interstellar detective, trying to suss out the whereabouts of our favorite space outlaws, Moll and L’ak, and their romantic Bonnie and Clyde routine.

As Burnham and Saru navigate the deadly dance of drone dodgeball on Lyric, they stumble upon a clue that's hotter than a phaser set to stun: a piece of a cosmic map hidden in plain sight, pointing the way to the next piece of the Progenitor puzzle. It's a race against time, with Moll and L’ak hot on the same trail, and only one team can come out on top. In a twist that ties the past to the present, Book uncovers a personal connection to Moll that's as surprising as finding a Betazoid at a Klingon opera. And just when you thought the drama couldn't get any thicker, Captain Burnham makes a play that could change the course of their mission and their lives, offering Rayner a shot at redemption and a chair as her right-hand man.

"Under the Twin Moons" isn't just a title; it's a metaphor for the dualities within us all - the scientific curiosity versus the preservation of sacred grounds, the thirst for adventure against the respect for those who came before, and the search for new horizons while holding onto the relationships that define us.

As the Discovery races against time, and Moll and L'ak, to uncover the next piece of the Progenitor puzzle, we're reminded that in the vast expanse of space, it's not just the stars that guide us, but the bonds we forge along the way.

Don't forget to tune in next Thursday, April 11th , for the 3rd episode in the epic 10-episode season and series finale.

SPOILER ALERT: This story discusses major plot developments in Season 5, Episode 1 of “ Star Trek : Discovery,” now streaming on Paramount+.

By the end of the episode, however, the mission has pushed Burnham and her crew to their limits, including slamming the USS Discovery into the path of a massive landslide threatening a nearby city. Before they risk their lives any further pursuing this object, Burnham demands that Kovich at least tell her why. (MAJOR SPOILERS FOLLOW.)

Kovich’s explanation evokes the classic “ Star Trek: The Next Generation ” episode “The Chase” from 1993 in which Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) — along with teams of Romulans, Klingons and Cardassians — learn that all humanoid life in the galaxy was created by a single species that existed billions of years earlier, and seeded thousands of planets with the DNA to pass along their legacy. (Along with presenting a profound vision of the origins of life, the episode also provided an imaginative explanation for why almost all the aliens in “Star Trek” basically look like humans with different kinds of forehead ridges.)

Kovich tells Burnham that the Romulan scientist was part of a team sent to discover exactly how these aliens — whom they call the Progenitors — made this happen; the object they’re seeking winds up being one part of a brand new “chase,” this time in the 32nd century, to find the Progenitors’ technology before it can fall into the wrong hands.

“I remember watching that episode and at the end of it just being blown away that there was this huge idea where we all come from,” Paradise says. “And then they’re going to have another mission the next week. I found myself wondering, ‘Well, then what? What happened? What do we do with this information? What does it mean?’”

Originally, Paradise says the “Discovery” writers’ room discussed evoking the Progenitors in Season 4, when the Discovery meets an alien species, the 10-C, who live outside of the galaxy and are as radically different from humans as one could imagine. “As we dug deeper into the season itself, we realized that it was too much to try and get in,” Paradise says.

Instead, they made the Progenitors the engine for Season 5. “Burnham and some of our other characters are on this quest for personal meaning,” Paradise says. Searching for the origins of life itself, she adds, “feels like a big thematic idea that fits right in with what we’re exploring over the course of the season, and what our characters are going through.”

That meant that Paradise finally got to help come up with the answers to the questions about “The Chase” that had preoccupied her when she was younger. “We had a lot of fun talking about what might’ve happened when [Picard] called back to headquarters and had to say, ‘Here’s what happened today,’” she says. “We just built the story out from there.”

SFX talks to Star Trek Discovery showrunner Michelle Paradise about *that* TNG callback

Star Trek Discovery

Star Trek Discovery may have gone far, far beyond any other point in the franchise’s timeline after its third season leap to the 32nd Century – but its final season is still finding time to address one of the biggest, oldest mysteries in the Star Trek universe.

Having being given a Red Directive (essentially, a Starfleet mission that must succeed at any cost) during the Discovery season 5 premiere, Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) discovers that she’s on the hunt for technology belonging to a group known as the Progenitors.

You may not recognize the name, but Star Trek fans of a certain vintage will certainly know of the ancient, life-creating beings: they form the basis of the 1993 Star Trek: The Next Generation episode ‘The Chase’, which sees Patrick Stewart’s Picard uncover perhaps the great mystery left in the universe: where do we come from?

As it turns out, all sentient life was formed thanks to the one race (now known as the Progenitors) – who had hoped to fill the galaxy with all manner of beings in part due to their desire to leave a lasting legacy.

Audiences in the early ‘90s must have had their minds blown but, frustratingly, it was never brought up again – until now.

Speaking to SFX , Star Trek Discovery showrunner Michelle Paradise opened up about why now was the right time to follow up on a mystery 30 years in the making.

"The Chase was such an incredible episode. It raises these huge ideas, huge thematic explorations. Who are we? Where did we come from? And then the episode ends and Picard goes on and there's just this huge thing that they've discovered, and we just found ourselves wondering, 'Well, what happened after that? What did the message mean? And what was it all about? And then what did Picard do?' And you just don't let that go," Paradise explained.

The showrunner continued, "And so we found ourselves wondering about what might have happened after, and that really became the catalyst for the journey this season. We know in The Chase that these beings seeded life as we know it. And so we take that and we ask the question, 'Well, how did they do that?'

"They must have had a technology and this technology is out there. And it seemed kind of fun to explore, where would that be and what if it's still out there somewhere? And ultimately, that's what our heroes and the bad guys are now in a race to find. And it's just a really cool thing."

Recap/Review: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Embraces Second Chances In “Under The Twin Moons”

It was awesome! Love that this season is a kinda sequel to TNGs The Chase. So many great Easter eggs. Loved the Soong type android… and the Roman ship… and did anyone else notice the tribble in the hall of Disco? Such fun.

You’re spoiling a lot here. Please don’t be this specific.

You can watch it for free, so spoilers are fine. If you are worried about them, why are you here? I’m here to hear a discussion on the episode.

The season preview shown at the end of the first episode had a quick shot of what looked like a constitution class starship. I’m actually excited to see how this season plays out.

Legacy ships.

Silly me for giving Discovery credit for being the only show not to rely on nostalgia-bait.

Any excuse to trot out the same tired complaint, huh?

When Trek stops troting out the same, tired nostalgia-bait, I’ll stop complaining. I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

For the love of God what exactly is wrong with building off previous canon from within a franchise? It’s not that they are playing off general interest nostalgia like pogo sticks and oldies music. And you know what? I love nostalga? Life is to short and painful at times. Let us be serviced

In 50 years people will look back at all of Star Trek as Nostalgic. So does it really matter in the long run?

You’re absolutely right.

PUSH THE FRANCHISE *FORWARD* AND BUILD NEW CANON AND LORE THAT PEOPLE IN 50 YEARS WILL BE NOSTALGIC ABOUT.

You have GOT to stop gatekeeping the right way to handle references in this franchise and dictating an end to pulling anything from previous canon.

I keep telling you this is not a normal franchise – it has 58 years of stories it can interconnect with and reference and build from. That’s a rare privilege for the writers and the fans, long term or no. There is no precedent for our situation beyond Doctor Who and Star Wars, really, and I’d say by telling stories that span 1000 years of continuity, Star Trek has done better than Star Wars which until Dawn of the Jedi has been hyper focused on a small sliver of time and space.

OMG did you see what register number that was??? #nospoilers

Calm down. It was in a preview for the season, and it was a blink and you’ll miss it shot.

I saw that too. And it reminds me that (I can talk about spoilers of this ep now right?)

The Progenitors or the idea of them did not originate on TNG’s the Chase. They were a theory of Spock as to why so many species across the galaxy are humanoid and that an ancient race must have populated several worlds across the Galaxy.

Why is the old guy in the ep keep referring to the Projenitors of a 1000’s of year old secret? The very notion that they are responsible for humanity makes them millions if not billions years old.

I took that as it’s the secret of their existence that a thousand years old- not the race themselves.

Ahhh gotcha.

Has anyone ever noticed that The female Progenitor not only looks like a changeling but is also played by Salome Jens? HMMMM…..

I’ve always noticed that… and always hoped that it was just a coincidence. “The Chase” was strong enough on its own without Changeling conspiracy theories throw in.

Plus, the Changelings only adopted their “solid faces” to mimic Odo’s poor shifting abilities and make him feel more comfortable with his own people.

'Star Trek: Discovery' opens its 5th and final season in unremarkable fashion (Red Directive recap)

Hello smartmatter, my old friend, I've come to watch you once again. Because no item is impossible, it makes the story unbelievable... ♬

Both Book and Tilly return to join the regular crewmember cast of the USS Discovery, plus a new face or two

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 1

Well, here we are. Again. It's the fifth and final time around for "Star Trek: Discovery" and the single biggest question every sci-fan will be asking themselves is, will this season actually be any good. The tragic thing is, no one can really remember what happened in season 4 and that speaks directly to the fact that "Discovery" is not exactly a high-scoring show when it comes to rewatchability.

It's been two years and two weeks, give or take a day, since we last saw the crew of the USS Discovery risk everything to save all life in the universe, again. During that time, we've seen a lot of sci-fi, both awesome and awful, including two seasons of " Picard " and " Strange New Worlds ," the third and final season of " The Orville ," season 1 of " Andor ," "The Book of Boba Fett," "Ahsoka" and the less said about "Obi-Wan Kenobi," the better. If you're wondering where to see all that Trek, check out our Star Trek streaming guide for Paramount Plus and more.

Not to mention, the vastly underrated second season of "Invasion" and "Halo" seasons 1 and 2, plus, the first mind-blowing season of "Silo" the second and sadly last season of " Avenue 5 " and two seasons of " For All Mankind ." The point is that the standard has, for the most part, been refreshingly high. And frankly before we even get into season 5 of "Discovery," it's worth remembering that what executive producers and showrunners Alex Kurtzman  and Michelle Paradise have given us up until now, has not exactly been a consistently high quality of sci-fi writing. In fact, it's been rather disappointing.

Are we in-store for another cookie-cutter season of what's-in-the-box plot threads that deliver misdirected build ups with unsatisfying pay offs...you know like we have for the past two seasons plus all three seasons of "Picard"..? Even "Andor," despite its peak and trough-style of repetitive set-piece storytelling, was impressive and that was down to how well those set pieces had been fleshed out along with well written character development and dialogue. Less can very easily be so much more.

Moreover, now we're in the 32nd century and we've seen that transporter technology can be used to replace stairs and even change outfits, so to be perfectly honest, there really isn't a single story idea that cannot be solved by a simple combination of transporter and replicator technology. Not to mention smartmatter. Ah, hello smartmatter, my old friend. Because this is what happens when you throw three seasons of a "Star Trek" series 1,164 years into the future.

Regardless, it would seem that within the story, between four and six months have passed since the events of last season , where you may remember, the United Federation of Planets was desperately trying to save all life as we know from being accidentally exterminated by species 10-C, all while Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) was still hell bent on using the illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator to destroy the dark matter anomaly. Book (David Ajala) gets killed when his ship explodes then bought back to life before he faces repercussions for siding with Tarka. General Ndoye (Phumzile Sitole) seems to get away scot-free despite sabotaging the Discovery's warp drive and everyone lives happily ever after.

Malinne 'Moll' Ravel (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) currently represent the alien antagonists.

Coming in at nearly 60 minutes long, the premiere episode is titled "Red Directive" and drops at the same time as the second episode, entitled "Under The Twin Moons." Michelle Paradise wrote the former, which could explain why it's so dull, and Olatunde Osunsanmi directed. The latter was written by Alan B. McElroy and directed by Douglas Aarniokoski, so fingers the second installment might be a bit better. Aarniokoski directed the season 3 premiere episode of "Picard" and while the rest of that was a disappointing, drawn out, nostalgia-fueled, 10-episode long epilogue to another series that ended three decades ago, the premiere installment was actually okay.

The gang seems mostly all here, including Lt. Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Adira (Blu del Barrio) and there are some characters who don't seem to have made it back, some of whom will be very much missed, like Grudge, while others won't be. No sign of Zora yet either. It's also entirely likely that the amazing talents of Callum Keith Rennie, who plays a Starfleet Captain named Rayner, will be spectacularly underused, much like Todd Stashwick was in season 3 of "Picard."

Credit to the production team though, as they're are really making the most of their Volume-esque video wall soundstage. There are a couple of interesting choices in terms of editing, much like there were in the second season premiere where Alex Kurtzman showed us what he'd learned in the Vince Gilligan School of Cinematography. It's doubtful we'll ever see them again, just like we didn't before.

Maybe having two starships essentially sticking their heads in the sand was a metaphor for

To conclude then, the opening episode of the final season "Star Trek: Discovery" is a far, far cry from strong openings that this show has demonstrated it's capable of in the past. And that's a sentence we've had to write far too many times. The TNG throwback right at the end is...well, disappointing, mostly because of the extent that nostalgic fan service has been dialed up since the first episode of Nu-Trek aired in September 2017. However, it could still provide an interesting story thread — we will just have to wait and see.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" and every episode of every "Star Trek" show — with the exception of "Star Trek: Prodigy" — currently streams exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US while "Prodigy" has found a new home o n Netflix.

Internationally, the shows are available on Paramount Plus in Australia, Latin America, the UK and South Korea, as well as on Pluto TV in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel.
