Staropramen Brewery Tour: A Comprehensive Guide to Prague’s Iconic Brewery (2024)

Food & Drink · Places to Visit

Staropramen Brewery Tour: A Comprehensive Guide to Prague’s Iconic Brewery (2023), including types of beer, ticket prices and how to get there from the centre of Prague.

If you’re a beer lover, there’s no better place to visit than the Staropramen brewery in Prague. With over 150 years of history, this brewery is one of the oldest and most respected in the Czech Republic. A visit to the Staropramen brewery is not only a chance to taste some of the best beer in the world, but also an opportunity to learn about the brewing process and the rich tradition of Czech beer-making. The brewery is located fairly close to Prague’s centre and makes a great indoor activity for 2-3 hrs.

In this blog post, I will take a closer look at what it’s like to visit the Staropramen brewery and why it’s a must-see destination for beer enthusiasts visiting Prague. I’ll also include my personal experience of visiting the brewery and a few extra insider tips if you want to follow the beer brewing trail in Prague and Czech Republic.

staropramen beer tour

Introducing the Staropramen Brewery

Founded in 1869, the Staropramen brewery is the largest in Prague and the second largest in the Czech Republic. It uses the unique Saaz Hops (mainly from the Zatec hop growing region ) and you can smell the sweet smell of malt brewing when you walk anywhere around Smichov area. The brewery started to export in 1953 and now supplies beer to over 37 different countries around the world. The word “Staropramen” means “old spring”.

Is Staropramen brewery worth visiting?

If you are interested in the history of beer making and you like drinking and tasting different types of beer then the Staropramen brewery is definitely worth visiting. It is the only traditional brewery in Prague that’s open to the public and you get to see where the beer is actually being made. The tour itself is reasonably priced, but if you are travelling to Prague on a tight budget, you can also just visit the entrance and the bar area (which is decorated in the late 19th-century style with old-fashioned advertisements, where you can buy a beer and enjoy the atmosphere).

If you are deciding between visiting the new Pilsen Beer Experience (close to Wenceslas Square) or the Staropramen Brewery, then the Staropramen Brewery is more authentic; because that’s where the beer is actually brewed – you can smell it and you can also walk around the buildings to get an idea how huge the whole complex is. The Pilsen Beer Experience is also much more expensive – tickets start from 500 CZK.

However, if you do have an extra day in Prague, it’s totally worth visiting the actual Pilsen Brewery and do a real tour of the brewery in Pilzen. The historic Pilzen town is also great and only 60 minutes by a fast train from the Main Train Station, so it makes a great day trip from Prague.

If you are interested in learning more about hops and beer brewing, Zatec is also only 60 minutes by bus from Prague and you can visit the largest brewing museum, sample the local beer and fully appreciate the idea of why the hop-growing town got accepted into the UNESCO list of places in Czech Republic in 2023.

What to expect when visiting

The Staropramen Visitor Center was opened in 2000 as part of the Staropramen Brewery complex. The museum takes you through the history of Staropramen from its founding in 1869 to the present day. It describes the gradual modernisation of beer production and how the brewery works on a day-to-day basis.

The story is told by the most significant figure in the history of Staropramen, the head brewer Josef Paspa. Under his leadership, Staropramen became the largest brewery in the former Czechoslovakia. In the exhibition, you can see many elements from the original brewery, including original brass mixing vats and a Tatra delivery truck that Staropramen used to deliver to customers in the 1930s. In the brewery, you go through the brewing process step by step until you arrive at the beer-tasting bar. No surprise there!

The tour ends with a beer tasting at the Staropramen bar, whose design reflects the rich tradition of Czech pubs, including old wooden tables, brass railings, and other accessories that you can find in the most popular Prague pubs. The beer is served in custom-made handmade glasses by Czech glassmakers. You can choose between lager, dark beer, and the Granát beer speciality, all of which are among the best-selling beers.

New Staropramen Ambassador

In 2023, Hollywood star Orlando Bloom became the new ambassador of Staropramen. Bloom spent several years in Prague filming the series Carnival Row and fell in love with the city and Czech beer.

Insider Tip

Not a lot of people know this, but you can visit the Staropramen bar without doing the museum and brewery tour. This is great if you are short of time (or not that interested in the history) and still want to sample the beer and enjoy the atmosphere of an old-fashioned Czech pub with a retro design.

You can buy the beer in 0.5 litres (from 65 CZK) or buy the tasting beer menu in 0.2 glasses (4 beers 160 CZK or 6 beers 200 CZK). This is a super good value, since you get to taste 6 different beers for the price of about one and a half at a restaurant at the Old Town Square.

The bar also serves a simple pub menu, such as pickled cheese, fried cheese, beer goulash or sausages pickled in beer.

staropramen beer tour

What beer can you taste at the Staropramen Brewery?

The beer tasting that’s included in the tour is 0.2 litre of each type of beer (depending on what type of ticket you have). On top of that, you can also taste any of the other beers offered on tap. The prices I’ve included in this list are 0.5 litre per beer.

STAROPRAMEN NEFILTR Characteristically unfiltered, it combines the tradition of Czech lager with German wheat beer and Belgian apple and coriander extract. Price: 65 CZK

STAROPRAMEN GRANÁT A polished semi-dark lager with a garnet colour, which is given by a combination of light, Bavarian and caramel malt. Made using the original 1884 recipe. Price: 65 CZK

STAROPRAMEN ČERNÝ Dark Bavarian-style lager with a full sweet caramel flavour and a gentle hop bitterness. Price: 65 CZK

BLUE MOON Belgian-style wheat beer with a touch of orange peel and coriander to enhance the flavour. Price: 65 CZK

SPECIÁL Selection of brewers, a different beer on tap every month. Price: 65 CZK

What is the alcohol percentage of Staropramen beer?

The alcohol percentage of Staropramen beer varies depending on the type of beer. The classic Staropramen Lager has an alcohol percentage of 5%, while the Staropramen Granat has an alcohol percentage of 4.8%. You can also taste the Staropramen version of non-alcoholic beer, which has all the taste, but no alcohol.

Is Staropramen beer available in the USA, UK and abroad?

Yes, Staropramen beer is available in the USA, UK and widely abroad. It can be found in select speciality beer stores and online retailers. However, availability may vary depending on location.

Who is the Staropramen Brewery Tour best for?

The museum and the tasting part are best for those over 18. It’s legal to drink alcohol in Czech Republic from the 18th birthday, but if you are lucky enough to look less than 18, you should carry with you an official ID – student card with a photo or your passport.

How to get to Staropramen Brewery from centre of PRague

The Staropramen Brewery is very close to the centre of Prague – no less than 15 minutes by tram or 10 minutes by underground. The building is within walking distance (5 minutes) from the Andel Underground Station on line B. If you get off at the side that says ‘ Na Knizeci’ you will walk out of the underground right in front of the brewery building.

Alternatively, you can also get a tram from the centre – number 12, 20, 5 stop right in front of the building and the stop is called ‘Na Knizeci’. Any tram (e.g. 9, 10,15, 16) that stops at Andel will be also close enough for you to walk to the brewery.

Opening Times

Tuesday – Saturday 10 am – 6 pm (closed on Sundays and Mondays) all year round. The English tour is at 1 pm every day, plus there are extra tours in Czech, Russian and German language.

Entrance Fee

The ticket prices are based on how many beers you’d like to taste at the end of your visit to the museum and the brewery. The cheapest ticket includes only one beer and is 249 CZK for adults, 219 CZK for students or seniors (without drink) for 99 CZK.

Children are allowed in the brewery and museum, but of course, won’t be served any alcohol (there are different soft drinks on offer at the bar). Tickets for children under 7 years old are free and under 13 years 99 CZK and for under 26 years 169 CZK.

The most expensive version of the ticket is the museum/brewery plus 6 types of Staropramen Beer for 339 CZK, which I think is a great deal (especially if you know that the restaurants at the Old Town Square will charge up to 150 CZK for one beer (1/2 litre – about a pint). The beer tastings are smaller than 1/2 litre each, but it still makes it a great value.

staropramen beer tour

Where to get tickets

You can buy tickets directly at the brewery entrance as you walk in or you can pre-book via the brewery’s official website (www.centrumstaropramen.cz). On Fridays and Saturdays, I would recommend pre-booking if you want to get in at a particular time because the brewery is very popular with stag tours and it’s a lot busier with regular tourists too.

Best time to visit

If you want to avoid the crowds and the stag parties, the best time to visit is on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

How much time to allow for your visit

When I visited last time, I spent about 2 hrs at the Staropramen Brewery. The brewery tour takes approximately 50 minutes, but you will need extra time to enjoy your beer tasting at the end of the tour (depending on how many beers you have as a part of your ticket). You can also buy individual beers to try once you finish your beer tasting.

Refreshments

You can order more beer and pub snacks and simple pub food at the bar.

There are free toilets available as you walk into the visitor’s centre.

The visitor’s centre also has many Staropramen-related souvenirs for you to tempt you with and to suit all budgets.

Can I do this independently or do I need a guided tour to visit

You can definitely do the tour or visit the Staropramen Brewery on your own. Everyone is super friendly and speaks English and you can easily buy your ticket to the museum when you get there. The museum has everything explained both in Czech and English language and every day at 1 pm you can join the English-speaking tour if you prefer. Getting to the brewery is also easy from the centre of Prague (just check out my notes above)

Things to do around the Staropramen Brewery

  • Explore the independent pubs and coffee places along the Lidicka Ulice, including independent local microbrewery ‘Andelsky Pivovar’ or ‘Kozlovna’ where you can taste all the Kozel range of beers.
  • Traditional Prague Farmer’s markets at Andel Underground Station (Fridays) or Naplavka opposite Vltava Riverbank under the Vysehrad Castle (Saturdays)
  • Hidden bars, restaurants and gallery at Smichovska Naplavka at Vltava River (5 minutes walk from the Staropramen Brewery)

The Staropramen Brewery Tour in Prague: Is it Worth it?

  • Last Updated March 17, 2024
  • Europe , Czech Republic

Being in the Czech Republic , a country renowned for both its lager producing pedigree and the quantity of ale consumed by its citizens, it should be no surprise to find my nostrils filled with the lingering odour of beer as I make my way towards the Smíchov district on the eastern side of the Vltava River, which cuts right through the heart of Prague.

However, this isn’t the same smell of pints that you find on the breath of the city’s abundant rowdy stag parties or embedded in the fabric of furnishings in the Old Town’s traditional watering holes, but a heady scent of hops and spent malt emanating from the sprawling industrial complex that makes up the iconic Staropramen Brewery.

Staropramen brewery exterior, Prague

The area too, is a far cry from the picturesque towers and ornate bridges of the Old Town just a short tram ride away. Here, the cathedral spires that are dotted throughout the most touristy areas are replaced with lofty chimneys and the colourful facades that encircle Prague’s quaint, bustling squares are instead exchanged for street after street of pastel yellow warehouses and office buildings.

The only inkling that this complex produces one of the country’s most popular beer exports are the enclosed yards stacked with kegs and the occasional logo plastered across a wall. That, and the ever-present smell of malting, milling, mashing, and fermentation.

Staropramen Brewery, Prague

Despite the fairly non-descript appearance of its home, Staropramen is the second largest brewery in the Czech Republic, exporting to 38 countries across the world.

Contrary to what some people may think, Staropramen’ does not mean ‘Star of Prague’ – although the breweries position as global ambassadors for of Prague’s brewing tradition would mean that it undoubtedly is – but takes its name from the old mineral water spring in Smichov where the beer is brewed, Staro meaning old in Czech, and pramen meaning ‘spring’.

It’s in Smichov that Staropramen was first brewed by Jan Kohout and Vilem Pick back in 1871 at the Ostravar Brewery, using Czech Saaz hops (from the Zatec hop-growing region), alongside Bohemian and Bavarian malts. The brewery was built to take advantage of the popularity of ‘Pilsner’ style beers that were first brewed in the town of Pilsen in 1842 and were becoming increasingly ubiquitous in pubs throughout Europe.

Staropramen Brewery, Prague

A far cry from the dreary, industrial neighbourhoods that surrounds it, stepping inside is almost like wandering into a dark, beer-focussed version of Disneyworld’s Main Street: the reception area is dressed to look like a cobbled Prague street from the time of the brewery’s inception, with faux store fronts and vintage signs smattered with historic Staropramen advertising.

This should give you an idea of what lies ahead of you on the tour – It is not a walk around a working brewery, but a stroll though a set of exhibitions detailed almost solely on a glamourised history of the brand. These take you through the history of Staropramen from its founding in 1869 to the present day, including the modernisation of the beer production process.

From the outset, the tour is fully automated, with lights and voiceovers guiding me through a series of different rooms where multimedia terminals and displays give you information about the brewery. While this feels like a rather efficient way of giving tours – without the need of a live person to Shepard guests through the museum – it does mean that you are often moved onto the next area before you have had a good chance to absorb your surroundings by the dimming of lights. Thankfully for me, there were only 5 other guests on my ‘tour’ so I had amble opportunity to read all the signs and supporting information, but I can imagine this is an impossible task when the group is large.

Old advertisements on the walls at the Staropramen Visitor centre

Thankfully, the first room you enter – decked out in old newspaper clippings of Prague – doesn’t require much reading or attention. The lights dim and a short video begins to play, outlining the history I mentioned above and detailing nationalised following the second world war before becoming public again after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc with the help of foreign investors in 1989.

Extensive modernization took place between the period of 1933 to 1937 lead by master brewer Josef Paspa, one of the most influential people in Staropramen’s history. The fermentation rooms with cooling vessels and large wooden barrels were replaced with modern steel tanks and in 1933, thanks to its increased volume of 800,000 hl, the brewery became the biggest brewery in Czechoslovakia.

A recreation of Josef Paspa's office at the Staropramen Visitor Centre

The next stop allows you to see inside Paspa’s officer, led by a holographic projection of the man himself who acts as tour guide throughout the rest of the tour, detailing how, under his leadership, Staropramen grew to become what it is today, as well as a top-level walkthrough of the brewing process. It’s a nifty and engaging way to present information, but it has the same issues that I previously mentioned, giving me the feeling that I am just being ushered along a fairground ride rather than seeing an actual brewery, and the darkness of the room gives me little chance to see the exhibits.

Steps in the original Staropramen Brewery

In the penultimate room, you can see the results of Paspa’s improvements: A small, tiled space filled with large, cylindrical copper tanks connected by pipes that jut off in all directions. This is the site of the original brewery and It is in these vessels that the pale malts were heated and stirred (mashed) in boiling water to release the sugars that go on to be fermented into alcohol, a very important step in the brewing process and one that is explained through screens that fill the walls, bringing a jarringly modern touch to the historic surroundings.

staropramen beer tour

If you’re hoping to see the real factory and bottling plant, a small-scale replica of the bottling line is as close as you will get in the last room of the tour. A glowing red button will set this set this in motion in what seems like a fairly pointless demonstration. However, this is par for the course in this final section, where the room is mostly filled with trinkets and items from the original brewery: an old Tatra truck (there’s more on Tatra in my Ostrava guide), some dusty historic bottles and stacks and stacks of branded crates that seem to be used entirely to fill space.

Thankfully, this all leads on to the main reason that most people choose to take a brewery tour: Beer tasting.

It takes place in the in the charming Staropramen bar, whose design is a modern take on the rich tradition of Czech pubs with beer served in custom-made handmade glasses by Czech glassmakers. Serving traditional Czech cuisine, as well more continental European dishes, this large restaurant is a member of the Potrefená Husa restaurant chain, which you can find all over Prague and the Czech Republic.

staropramen beer tour

The beer tasting is included with a valid tour ticket and will involve either four or six (depending on which type of entry ticket you purchase) 0.2 litre glasses of beer in a flight of some of Staropramen’s most popular brews. Unfortunately, this isn’t a guided tasting, but you will be given a brief explanation of the beers as they are brought over to your table, with a crib sheet detailing the ingredients and original brew date. While I only opted for the smaller tasting, here are the four beers that I sampled:

Staropramen

This premium pale lager is the beer with the oldest recipe in the brewery. It has been brewed unchanged since 1871. Bohemian and Bavarian malt and hops from the Žatec region are used.

Staropramen Nefiltrovaný

First introduced to the market in 2011 and envisioned as a Czech version of wheat beer, its unique taste comes from a hint of coriander. Czech malt and wheat malt are both used for this beer alongside some added apple extract.

Staropramen Granát

First brewed in 1884, Granat was created by head brewer Michael Trnka during his 28-year reign in charge of the brewery and was Staropramen’s first semi-dark beer. Its ruby-red colouring comes from the combination of light, Bavarian and caramel malt and it is still brewed using the original 1884 recipe.

Staropramen Černý Ležák

This dark beer is a relatively new one in the Staropramen oeuvre, first brewed in 1997. It uses four different types of malt: Bohemian malt, Bavarian malt, caramelised malt and coloured malt

With that last sip of my final beer, my Staropramen experience came to an end. All in all, I spent a total of an hour in the visitor centre – about 35 minutes to complete the tour, and another 20 – 25 minutes in the bar sampling beers. It’s worth noting that this bar and restaurant are open to the public, so even if you don’t want to drag yourself around the museum, you are able to visit and try the beer without purchasing a ticket. Even with that in mind, there are much better pubs with much better beer all over Prague, so this is one for Staropramen enthusiasts only.

StaroPramen Tour Information

During the Staropramen Brewery Tour, visitors can get a glimpse into the history of Prague’s most famous beer, from its creation in 1869 until the present. How to Get to the Staropramen Visitor Centre

You will find the Staropramen visitor centre within the sprawling brewery complex on the edge of Prague’s Anděl neighbourhood. You will find the brewery on Nádražní street, and the closest tram stop is Na Knížecí. This is only one stop from the Anděl metro station and can be reached via trams 6, 20, 14, or 12. You will find the entrance of the visitor center on Pivovarská Street, which is perpendicular to Nádražní Street.

If you need information on how to get from Prague’s Airport to the Old Town, see this blog post.

Should you Take a Staropramen Brewery Tour?

Overall, the tour is informative about the history of the brewery, but that is all that it has to offer. I will precede what I’m going to outline next by saying that if you have a deep affinity for the Staropramen brand or have an interest in the history of Czech beer and brewing, then you will probably get something out of this tour.

However, for everyone else, I would say that a tour of the Staropramen visitor centre isn’t worth your time and the tour is likely to disappoint even the most ardent beer enthusiasts.

After all, this isn’t really a tour of the Staropramen brewery, but rather a visitor centre made up of a few small rooms and exhibitions in the form of a rather diminutive museum. The only glimpse you will catch of the actual, working brewery is what you will see while wandering the streets around the sprawling Smíchov-based complex in search of the visitor centre’s entrance.

The exterior of the Staropramen Brewery in Prague, Czechia

Having said that, for the casual beer drinker, all the information is easily understood, and the tour doesn’t go overboard with brewing jargon. It’s presented in an engaging way too, narrated by videos and holograms of Joesef Paspa who acts as your tour guide throughout. The main issue with this comes from the fact that the tour is timed, meaning that, if you want to have a more detailed look at the exhibitions, the lights fade out when it’s time to move on and you will need to hurry to the next room.

As someone that has taken dozens of brewery tours around the world, it is safe to say that Staropramen’s tour was one of the most disappointing that I have undertaken. There is no real insight into the way the modern brewery works and no interaction with anyone that works for Staropramen other than the staff at the bar where the tour ends.

A tasting at this bar is probably the most enjoyable part of this experience, in which you can sample a flight of four or six of the company’s most popular beers. However, even here there is no real interaction with beer professionals: You will have someone quickly list the beers that are in front of you and then leave you to drink them alone. This is not a guided tasting, and you will be given no real information about what you are drinking. Some people will say that the bar here serves the best Staropramen in the city, but you will get a better overall drinking experience in one of Prague’s many wonderful, traditional pubs.

Alternative Brewery Tours in Prague

Although Staropramen is Prague’s largest and most well-known brewery, the Czech capital has over 25 working breweries – that’s one brewery for every 50,000 people – varying from small producers and brewpubs that go back centuries, to contemporary craft breweries that have been established much more recently and opt to brew more modern, experimental styles alongside traditional Czech lagers.

All of this makes Prague the perfect place to sample a wide range of beers from different breweries and what could be better way to experience a city’s beer scene than venturing off the tourist path and connecting with local beer professionals over a cold one? With so many options, It’s always better to take the advice of someone in the know and a guided tour is the perfect way to do this.

I recently took a fantastic food tour of Prague with Prague City Adventures who also offer beer tours. Alternatively, Prague Brewery & Beer Tours specialise in touring microbreweries and all-inclusive beer trips around Prague.

If you would like to see the birthplace of Pilsner Style beer, I highly recommend taking a day trip to Pilsen where you can visit the Pilsner Urquell Brewery via a private tour from Prague .

Where to Stay in Prague

There are some hotels and rental apartments located around the Staropramen brewery in the Anděl and Smíchov neighbourhoods. However, I wouldn’t recommend staying in Smíchov as it is not one of the city’s nicest areas, instead opt for the Old Town or New Town to ensure that you are closer to other attractions.

Sophie's Hostel

Prague has a large number of hostels, and these can vary from accommodation with downright grimy, bunk-filled dorms to the more luxurious hostels with modern furnishings and private rooms. Thankfully, Sophie’s is the latter and easily one of the best hostel experiences in Prague. The beds are comfortable, the bathrooms are clean, and the on-site bar plays host to events, meaning it is always busy and a good place to meet fellow travellers.

Miss Sophie's Downtown

Managed by the same company as Sophie’s Hostel, there are several stylish, boutique hotels dotted around the city that come under Miss Sophie’s brand. I stayed at Miss Sophie’s downtown, located just a 2-minute walk from Prague’s main railway station and a short hop from both the Old Town and New Town, on my first trip to Prague and loved its stylish rooms, modern rooms and laid back bar that sits beside the reception area.

Andaz Prague

The luxurious Andaz Prague is located on Senovážné Square, in the heart of the historical center of Prague and just a short walk from the popular to Wenceslas and Old Town Squares. This stylish concept hotel by Hyatt features an in-house wellness spa, the Mez cocktail bar, and avant-garde Czech bistronomy with Japanese Izakaya influences at their ZEM restaurant.

Staropramen Brewery

Staropramen Brewery

With the growth of industrialization that enveloped Prague in the late 1800’s, a large population of workers thirsty for a refreshing beverage after a hard day’s work set the stage for the foundation of Staropramen. Today, Staropramen remains one of the most recognizable, widely distributed Czech lagers, filling super-market shelves and pub taps across the world. Naturally, visiting their new Visitors Center and learning a bit about this Prague lager tops the list of things to do when in Prague.

social media icons

When you decide to take a Staropramen tour , your experience will take place in the Staropramen Visitors Center . Located within their brewery complex on Nádražní street in Smíchov, this newly built, high tech Visitors Center is more of an exhibition about Staropramen beer than a tour. Lasting about 35 minutes , you walk through about 4 rooms, beginning with facts about the founding of Staropramen, the brewing process, and lastly bottling and shipping. To make the tour dynamic, there are swiftly appearing videos, a wide range of sound effects, holograms, and all sorts memorabilia to catch your interest. The character of Josef Paspa , the famous brewer who modernized Staropramen’s brewing process, essentially becomes your tour guide, popping up through the exhibition and delivering facts in a grandfather-like voice.

In the first room, you’ll have a chance to learn about the historical foundation of Staropramen. Next, you meet Josef Paspa, the legendary brewer, and see the brewmaster’s office. The 3rd room is where the process of brewing is explained, as well as some basic info about the ingredients used. In this room, there are copper mashers and kettles, as well as some samples of ingredients like hops and barley. The facts about beer brewing are delivered in an easy to understand manner, which is also informative. Lastly, you’ll see the beer production line and learn about beer shipping logistics.

Overall, this tour is an informative experience. All the information is easily understood, and not heavy with beer making jargon. One disadvantage is that the tour is timed. If you’re too slow, or want to have a second look, the lights fade out when it’s time to move on. To clarify, during this tour, you do not enter the brewery itself. This is more of an educational exhibition in Staropramen’s Visitors Center.

Possibly the most enjoyable part of the tour is the end- which involves you choosing which mug of Staropramen’s brew you’d like to sip in their very classy Visitor Center’s pub. This pub serves the best Staropramen in all of the city , in a new, but still traditional Czech pub. Decorated with old memorabilia, and manned by knowledgable and talented staff, all the Staropramen beers are on tap. This beer is also included in the price of your ticket.

There are plenty of accommodation options in Prague, and quite a few hotels are located around the Staropramen brewery, in the neighborhoods of Anděl and Smíchov. However, Smíchov is in general not the the nicest of neighborhoods to stay in.

Restaurant/Pub

Staropramen’s in-house brewery restaurant, Na Verandách is a contemporary Czech pub with all of Staropramen’s beers on tap. Serving traditional Czech cuisine, as well more continental European dishes, this large restaurant is a member of the Potrefená Husa restaurant chain, which you can find all over Prague and the Czech Republic. The quality of food at Na Verandách, like all Potrefená Husa restaurants, is decent, but not exceptional. The portions tend to be on the smaller size, and the prices are more than the average Czech restaurant. Their menu is quite diverse- almost anyone can find something to suit their tastes. For a beer snack, they’ve got appetizers like fried stuffed peppers, chicken wings, and Czech classics like nakládaný hermelín. For main courses, they serve goulash, svíčková (beef in a cream sauce), traditional Czech duck, as well as pasta dishes and salads. Well staffed, the service is quick, but sometimes a bit cold. With over 200 seats, there is a smoking as well as non-smoking section, and a pleasant garden in the summer.

Staropramen Brewery and visitors center are located on Nádražní street, and the closest tram stop is Na Knížecí. One stop from the metro station Anděl, take trams 6, 20, 14, or 12. The entrance of the visitors center is on Pivovarská street, which is perpendicular to Nádražní street.

Brewery visit to Prague: Staropramen

One of the largest breweries in the Czech Republic is located in Prague. Staropramen beer is brewed here. We took part in a tour of the Visitor Centre, followed by a beer tasting.

Prag - auf dem Weg zur Staropramen Brauerei

In the early afternoon we could take part in a German speaking tour in the Staropramen Visitor Centre. We waited in the lobby until 5 minutes before the tour started. When the ticket office opened and we could pick up our reserved tickets. Guided tours are offered here every 30 minutes. Some of them also in English and German. Normally a maximum of 30 people per tour take part – we were the only participants!

Prag Besucherzentrum Staropramen

Tour of the visitor centre

With our admission ticket we passed a turnstile and from that moment on the tour was fully automated. Lights and announcements guided us through the different rooms and indicated monitors / multimedia stations. Due to the relatively tight time frame between the guided tours, you will sometimes “rudely” pushed out of a room by the lights going out. I was quite happy that we were not prevented by 28 other people from trying out or reading something. I can imagine that can sometimes be a tight schedule when the groups are very active.

Rundgang im Besucherzentrum

What do you learn on the tour?

First of all you will learn about the history of the brewery. The brewery was founded in Prague as early as 1869. The engineer Gustav Noback designed a brewery that was highly modern for those times. In 1871 the brewing started there and since 1911 the brand name “Staropramen” has been registered. The translation of Staropramen literally means “old source”.

After the Second World War the company was nationalised and only after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc could the company be converted back into a public limited company with the help of foreign investors in 1989. Today Staropramen is the third largest Czech beer exporter. The beer is supplied to 37 countries, but the export is mainly to America and the EU.

Biersorten Staropramen

Of course you will also learn in detail how to brew beer. The brewing process is presented very clearly and comprehensibly in multimedia presentations. Also impressive are the huge copper kettles, which can be seen here as illustrative objects.

A mini bottling line and the accompanying film very clearly demonstrate how the beer is filled and packaged. From there, you can enter a room where you can follow the beer’s journey to a particular country. You select the country of your choice and a short film is shown. The tour lasts a maximum of 30 minutes, after which you leave the exhibition rooms via a spiral staircase.

Braukessel

Staropramen beer tasting

At the end of the spiral staircase you will find the “Staropramen” pub. Here you will find the fan shop and the possibility to drink a freshly tapped beer and eat something.

Our visitor pact included a beer sample. The table was already prepared and we were expected.

Biertasting Staropramen

Four beer coasters were lying in front of us, on each of them we put the matching beer. I find these coasters very clever. Not only the name of the beer was written here, but also colour, alcohol content, number of malts and when this beer was first brewed. After a short explanation we start with our tasting.

Staropramen Premium

Premium pale lager is the beer with the oldest recipe in the brewery. It has been brewed unchanged since 1871. Bohemian and Bavarian malt and hops from the Žatec region are used. The alcohol content is 5%.

Staropramen Premium

The beer tastes slightly malty and has a pleasant hop note. Only later does one notice the bitterness of the bottom-fermented Pils. I like the beer quite well, but it is nothing too outstanding among the various beers I have drunk so far.

dunkles Staropramen Bier Prag

Staropramen Černý Ležák

The recipe for the dark beer with the alcohol content of 4.4% is still quite young. It was brewed for the first time only in 1997. Four different types of malt are used for the beer: Bohemian malt, Bavarian malt, caramelised malt and coloured malt.

The beer tastes very soft and full-bodied. It almost flatters the palate and is definitely one of my favourites at this tasting.

Staropramen Granát

Staropramen Granát is a semi-dark lager with a beautiful ruby red colour. This beer also has a lot of tradition in the brewery. It was first brewed in 1884. With its alcohol content of 5.5%, it is the strongest beer in the tasting. However, I find that you don’t really notice it. The beer is brewed from three types of malt (Bohemian, Bavarian and caramelised malt) and is triple hopped.

Staropramen Granat

The beer tastes full-bodied, the hops are mildly bitter.

Staropramen ungefiltert

Staropramen Nefiltrovaný

The most surprising beer for me is the unfiltered pale beer. The recipe was first introduced to the market in 2011. The brewer uses Czech malt and wheat malt for the beer. The beer has an alcohol content of 5.0%. The recipe also contains added apple extract.

I like the taste, it’s a pity that this beer is not on sale in Germany.

We were able to take a lot of time during the beer tasting and also had nice conversations with the employees about beer. Even after us there were hardly any guests in the visitor centre and so we could enjoy our stay in peace.

The visit to the Visitor Centre was made possible for us free of charge by the Czech National Tourist Board – CzechTourism in Berlin. Many thanks!

Moscow Metro

Introduction of moscow subway system (metro).

Richly Decorated Central Hall of Novokuznetskaya Station

Nowadays the Moscow Metro has 12 lines, light subway and monorail. All stations are unique and beautiful in their own way. Unfortunately, in order to visit them all, you need to spend many days. I invite guests to visit the ones that have the greatest cultural and historical interest from my point of view. Among them are the Revolution Square, Arbatskaya, Kievskaya (Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line № 3); Kievskaya, Belarusskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Komsomolskaya (the Ring line number 5). Let us dwell a bit on each.

Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line

Subway station "revolution square".

Sign “Ploshchad Revolyutsii” in Archway with Bronze Figures

Most recently - in the year 2008-2010 – the Eastern lobby was renovated. Because of the terrorist attacks in the Moscow subway that took place several hours before the planned opening of the East lobby after renovation, the solemn part of the event was canceled.

Subway station Arbatskaya

Subway Arbatskaya is located on the same subway line as the station "Revolution Square." It was founded in 1953. It received the name in honor of the Arbat Street. It has one ground lobby (Western). Initially, the lobby was in a separate building, but the new building of the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense started, the lobby appeared to be in its atrium. The old exits were bricked up; a new entrance was built into the building of General Staff of the street Vozdvizhenka. There is a huge frame with a missing portrait in the ground lobby - until mid-1950 there was a portrait of Stalin. According to some reports, it survived, but closed with plaster.

The lobby was restored and partially reconstructed in 2007-2008.

The depth of the station is 41 meters.

Pylons are finished with red marble at the bottom, decorated with bouquets of flowers made from ceramics. The floor is laid out with gray granite. The walls lined with glazed ceramic tiles, white top and black bottom. The station hall is illuminated by massive bronze chandeliers in the form of rings.

Subway station Kievskaya

There are several subway stations "Kievskaya" in Moscow, located on different branches. This name is quite popular. It comes from the capital of Ukraine - one of Russia's nearest neighbors - the city of Kiev. The name is fully consistent with the idea of the subway station. The interior the station devoted to Soviet Ukraine and the reunification of Ukraine and Russia. The station is decorated with a large number of paintings .Twenty four murals depicting workers of Soviet Ukraine are placed on the arch above the pylons. The wall from the side of platform also contains frescos, mainly with images of fantastic plants. Pylons are decorated with light marble and additionally decorated with colorful ceramic cornice. The butt of the station has a large mosaic, depicting festivities to celebrate the 300 anniversary of the reunification of Ukraine and Russia.

Opened in 1953, this subway station for a long time was the final (1953-2003).

The station has one lobby, combined with the station ring line and located in the building of the Kievskaya railway station. The diameter of the central hall station is 9.5 m, the diameter of side one is 8.5 m. The depth of the station is 38 meters.

= Ring Line Subway =

It opened in 1954. The station received its name after the Kiev station, and locked the Ring line. During the construction of the station many projects were proposed, but the victory in the competition won the Kiev architects who made the construction of the station. It is the only station of the Ring Line which is not located in the Central Administrative District of Moscow.

The station has a pylon structure. Eighteen pylons are decorated with mosaic panels of glazes, decorated on the theme of Ukrainian history and friendship between the Ukrainian and Russian peoples, which started in the mid-17 century.

On the front wall of the central hall of the station a large panel with molding in the form of flags and a mosaic portrait of Lenin in the center are located. There are lines of the Soviet national anthem around the portrait, and under the portrait - the words of Lenin. One of the ways out of the station was designed by French architects modeled on the Paris Subway in 2006.

At one of the mosaics – “The Struggle for Soviet power in Ukraine "- modern passengers observe a mobile phone and PDA in the hand of one of the guerrillas, and on his knees - a laptop. In fact, he uses a field telephone, which was really a heavy thing (guerrillas holds it in two hands), and thing that people see a laptop is the lid of a box with a telephone. However, these phones have begun to produce only in the second half of the 20-ies of XX century. We must assume that the mosaic depicts a foreign field telephone transmitter.

Subway station Belorusskaya

The founded of the station was in 1952. It received the name after the Belarusian railway station nearby. The station has two ground-based lobbies. The Western one goes to Tverskaya  Zastava. It is decorated with beautiful carvings. The Eastern one leads to Butyrskiy shaft and Forest Street. The Eastern lobby is known for its majolica panels.

The station Belorusskaya is located at a depth of 42.5 m below ground. The diameter of the central hall is 9.5 meters.

Pylons are faced with light marble. The walls lined with white ceramic tiles, the floor is covered with ceramic tiles, gray, white and red colors. Lamps placed on pylons, in the form of vases made of glass and marble. The theme of decoration is economy and culture of Belarus. Decorative pattern on the floor repeats the theme of traditional Belarusian embroidery. Decorations of the ceiling consist of stucco decorations and 12 mosaic panels depicting the life of the Belarusian people.

Subway station Novoslobodskaya

Built in 1952, Subway station Novoslobodskaya got its name from the eponymous street:  the station is located at the very beginning of it.

Novoslobodskaya is pylon station of deep foundation (its depth is 40 m) with three arches.

Exit to the street is through the ground lobby with column portico, located on Novoslobodskaya Street lined with gray marble. Pylons of the underground station are faced with marble from the Urals. Thirty two spectacularly illuminated stained-glasses, placed inside the pylon and bordered by steel and gilt brass are splendid decoration of the station. A remarkable mosaic "World Peace" is located at the end of the central hall. The picture depicts a happy mother with a baby in her arms; it was the face of Stalin at the picture: the child gave a hand to him. But in times of Khrushchev the face of the former leader of USSR was removed from the panel. The walls are lined with bright marble; floor is covered with white and black granite slabs, placed in a checkerboard pattern.

Subway station Komsomolskaya

The station was built in 1952 and named in honor of the Komsomolskaya Square, which is situated nearby.

This subway station is the station of the deep bedding. Its depth is 37 meters. The station has column and three- arched design. Cast iron decoration is used in the construction, monolithic slab used as a tray for a collapsible finishing. The length of the boarding hall is 190 meters; width of it is 10 meters. There are 68 octagonal columns at station.

The main theme of the interior of the station is the fighting of the Russian people for their independence. The ceiling is decorated with eight station mosaic mural made from glazes and precious stones. Six of them represent the Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky, Alexander Suvorov and Mikhail Kutuzov, the Soviet soldiers and officers at the walls of the Reichstag.

Two other panels, depicting Stalin ("Victory Parade" and "Presentation of the Guards Banner"), were replaced after the dethronement of Stalin's personality cult in 1963. New panels depict Lenin's speech in front of the Red Guards and the Motherland on the background of the Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower.

The yellow ceiling is decorated with mosaic and moldings. The hall is illuminated by massive chandeliers hanging between the panels; platforms are illuminated with smaller chandeliers. The columns are decorated with marble capitals and trimmed with light marble, as well as the wall station. The floor is laid with pink granite. There is a bust of Lenin at the end of the hall. At the opposite end of the escalator is a large Florentine mosaic of the Order of Victory with red banners on the background. The ground lobby of the station is decorated with bas-reliefs.

In conclusion...

Each of the stations of the Moscow subway is attractive and interesting in its own way. Each has its own long and fascinating history and is beautifully decorated. The Moscow subway is a whole world, which can be talking about for hours. I suggest you short - no more than one hour and a half - and a fascinating journey through the world of the Moscow subway. The pleasure is guaranteed!

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
