Two former softball standouts are returning back to the softball fields as coaches for the NY Lady Rebel 12u team. The coaches are Kelly (D’Angelo) Bednarski and Stephanie Narde. The Lady Rebels are lucky to have these non-parent coaches be part of the program, and the development of young softball players in the area.
Kelly attended Elmira Southside High School where she was a 3-sport standout athlete. She played 6 seasons of softball, where as a pitcher she threw two perfect games and three no hitters, striking out 371 batters during her senior season with an ERA of 0.37. She then went on to play collegiately at American International College where she was named Northeast-10 pitcher of the year and first team All-Conference. She was also an All-American selection, leading the nation in strikeouts. At IAC she set single season records in strikeouts (229), shutouts (15), and ERA (0.47). Kelly also coached the varsity softball team at SHS, prior to the high schools merging.
Stephanie attended Horseheads High School, who was a Section IV all-conference selection, as well as an all-division selection in multiple years. Stephanie played shortstop at D1, St Bonaventure, for 4 years. Stephanie is a certified functional strength coach at NYSF, and has experience training athletes and individuals of all ages.

The Syracuse Orange athletic teams have traveled nationwide in recent weeks. Let’s check in on how our beloved Orange teams fared on the road and in the 315.
Syracuse Softball (16-14, 4-8)
After nearly two months on the road, the Orange finally returned to Skytop Softball Stadium for their home opening series against Georgia Tech last week. Makenzie Foster tallied SU’s only RBI in a 5-1 loss in game one on Thursday.
Syracuse got back in the win column with a 6-5 walk-off victory in game two on Friday evening. Kelly Breen went 3/4 with an RBI, but Foster was the hero with a game-winning double. The freshman is only one of four players with a batting average (.304) over .300. She’s also second on the team in on-base percentage (.407).
WALK OFF WIN! pic.twitter.com/Xlf2hGUloU — Syracuse Softball (@CuseSB) March 29, 2024
Pitchers Madison Knight and Julianna Verni combined for a gem in game three, holding GT to one run in a 7-1 win. The Orange got an early lead after an Angel Jasso single and Madelyn Lopez home run in the bottom of the first inning. Graduate student Rebecca Clyde racked up her second three-hit game of the season, hitting that mark for the first time since the opening game
Syracuse was supposed to play Wednesday, but rain pushed back a doubleheader with Canisius to April 17. Next up for the Orange is a three-game series against Clemson , with the first pitch in game one set for 3:00 p.m. on Friday at Skytop Softball Stadium.
Syracuse Tennis (9-9, 3-8)
Over on the court, it was another rough road weekend for the Orange, this time in The Sunshine State. Last Friday, Florida State swept all seven matches, three of which came on tiebreakers. After losing the first set 6-0 in the #1 Singles match, Miyuka Kimoto responded with a decisive 7-5 win in the second set, only to fall 11-9 in the ensuing tiebreaker.
Syracuse then traveled to Coral Gables to face #21 Miami on Sunday morning. The Hurricanes won all three of the doubles matches, but Anastasia Sysoeva finally got the Orange on the board with a tiebreak victory in the #3 Singles match.
While SU might have only won one of 14 weekend matches, the good news is its five-game road trip is finally over. The women next take the court at Drumlins Country Club on Friday at 3:00 p.m. against Notre Dame .
Out on the water, the Syracuse women’s rowing team moved up four spots to #8 in the Pocock CRCA Poll after a historic finish in the ACC/Big 10/Ivy Dual. There was no race last weekend, so the Orange have two weeks to prepare for this weekend’s Cayuga Cup versus Yale and Cornell. The competition from Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs kicks off on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Elsewhere, former coxswain of last year’s varsity 8, Hannah Murphy, led Cambridge University to a win in the 2024 Boat Race over the weekend. The race, between Cambridge and Oxford University has been an annual tradition since 1927.
Congratulations Hannah Murphy ‘23 and Cambridge 2024 Boat Race champions! @theboatrace pic.twitter.com/Vfz3NQJU6f — Syracuse Women’s Rowing (@CuseWRowing) March 31, 2024
The men’s rowing team is also in action this weekend, beginning its spring season at the Pac-12 Invitational in Redwood Shores, California. #9 Syracuse will compete against #20 Oregon State , #8 Stanford and #1 Cal on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7.

Meet the All-Central New York high school softball team
- Published: Jun. 29, 2010, 4:36 a.m.
The All-Central New York softball teams were selected by a panel of Section III coaches.
All-CNY Coach of the Year
Kerry Bennett, Cicero-North Syracuse
Years coaching (including this year): 28
Season record: 21-4
Career record: 575-145
Other numbers: 20 league titles, 14 sectional titles, 9 Regional titles, 4 State titles
What made this season so special: The whole was greater than the sum of the parts.
What I look for in an athlete: Someone who holds high standards for themselves, and works toward that end.
How I get things done: I welcome parents who wish to work with their daughters on individual skills, while I try to work with players on maintaining their composure in a game.
All-CNY Pitcher of the Year
Tiffany Sampere, Liverpool, senior
What's next? Playing summer ball for the NY Badapples then continuing my softball career at Cortland State
Season statistics: 16-2, 0.89 era, 196 strikeouts
Best moment of the season: Winning the league title and going undefeated in league play.
Strangest moment: In Florida we had a snake go through the infield right pass Emily as she screamed.
Pregame ritual: My dad brings me a Red Bull before every game and the team circle.
Describe your style of play: Intense and Aggressive
Your prized possession: UNC bear and my glove.
Your inspiration: My dad who has guided me throughout all these years, coach Spataro and my cousin Sara Reed.
All-CNY Player of the Year
Abby Romano , Liverpool, senior
What's next? I will be attending University at Buffalo and majoring in physics and biology
Season statistics: .432 BA, 7 2b, 3 3b, 3 HR, 12 RBI
Career statistics: .358 BA, 17 2b, 8 3b, 3 HR, 31 RBI
Best moment of the season: The best moment of the season was coming from behind and beating CNS on live television after 9 innings. That was the first time we really came together as a unified team and we all played our hearts out. Also, I stole a base and threw a girl out, my favorite part of base running and catching.
Strangest moment: In Florida over spring break we had to stop a game because there was a snake on the field. Everyone started screaming and I was just standing there mad because we were losing the game.
Pregame ritual: I hit one bucket of soft toss, one bucket of front toss, and then I have a dance party for the rest of BP and during the bus ride to the game. I like dancing before games because it gets me pumped, but it also relaxes my brain and gets me loose.
Describe your style of play: I am really competitive and always try to play with a lot of intensity, but I also have to play relaxed and stay smooth. If I get too excited then I get anxious at the plate, so I always have to relax myself when I need to perform.
Your prized possession: My most prized softball possession is my bat. It has served me well for the last 3 years of my softball career and it's also great for air guitaring.
Your inspiration: My three older sisters paved the way for me and set the bar high, and my grandpa taught me to always finish strong. My dad, who was my first coach, and my mom are my biggest fans. They paid for the expense of this accomplishment. Coach Spataro motivated me because he always knew what to say at the right times. I also worked with the best hitting and catching coaches at Sports Zone during the off season.

Senior pitcher throws no-hitter as Marcellus softball blanks Cazenovia: ‘Annabella was just cruising’
Marcellus pitcher Annabella Mondello was firing on all cylinders in her outing against Cazenovia on Saturday.
Mondello threw 17 strikeouts and gave up zero hits in the Mustangs’ 15-0 win over the Lakers.
“Annabella was just cruising today,” Marcellus coach Lisa MacLachlan said. “She did a great job. We were in Tennessee over the weekend, and she pitched to some really strong teams from Kentucky down there. She carried it over back home even though it was a lot colder than it was in Tennessee.”
Mondello received sufficient help from her teammates throughout the game. The Marcellus defense only committed one error in the field.
“ Carly Sears made a great play in right field to preserve the no-hitter,” MacLachlan said. “She threw a girl out from right (field) that would have been a hit otherwise.”
The Mustangs were clicking offensively as well. The star of the Marcellus lineup was Jill O’Connor . The senior had a grand slam in the sixth inning that broke the game open. Mondello added to her pitching performance with three hits, four RBIs and three runs scored. Brynnly Goldsworthy recorded a hit, an RBI and three runs scored.
Cazenovia pitcher Paige Reilley had eight strikeouts through six innings pitched. The sophomore gave up only five earned runs.
Marcellus (2-1) faces off against Christian Brothers Academy on Wednesday.
Cazenovia (1-1) heads to Solvay on Thursday for a league contest.
