“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

TAG Foundation is driven by the spirit of Ubuntu and the will to make a difference in the lives of competent learners from financially challenged home backgrounds.

TAGGERS FAM - What an event!!

Our hearts are full💗.

TAG Foundation co-founder Jonathan Gerber sums some his emotions up from last nights brilliant gathering of sponsors, donors, suppliers, friends, family and partner schools of TAG Foundation: "Woke up feeling a little tender but extremely grateful. What a night! Over R1,5 million raised for the education of bright young minds. Absolutely in awe of our supporters and the record crowd of over 450 people that turned up. It was the first time that we had educators from Parktown High School for Girls join us and it was great to have them along. 11 Tag Foundation Old Boys joined us and it was just a magical night.

Levelthree Premium Venue was packed to the jowls and it was a revelation to just be partying for good. This was the first time that we held this event in Winter and it was so good to just be out and about again with all of our friends and loyal supporters. 44 young men and 10 young ladies are better off because of this fantastic initiative. Whilst I am a bit of a train wreck this morning, I woke up with a smile on my face and a warmth in my heart.

Words just can’t do justice to the gratitude that we have. Until next year onwards and upwards and thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This is quite simply impossible without all of our many supporters, sponsors, donors and friends. Thank you!"

Parktown High School for Girls tweeted this am, "What an incredible evening last night. Thank you to everyone who has made this possible. The biggest THANK YOU to TAG Foundation." #proudlyparktown

Samantha Bronkhorst of Beachcomber Resorts & Hotels posted on FB: "What a special event celebrating all the amazing lives changed for boys of King Edward VII School & girls of Parktown High School For Girls Johannesburg, Gauteng by the incredible TAG Foundation!!

Blown away by the generosity and excitement of everyone!! So special that Beachcomber Tours could be part of it!!"

Thank you to all our incredible sponsors and donors who generously contributed to the success of this fundraiser. ♡Unbelievable ♡Grateful ♡Thankful ♡Best Tribe Ever Together We Are Changing Lives. The Future Through Education🇿🇦

Massive thanks to the TAG Travel Assignment staff who worked so hard in the organisation, preparation and execution of all the events on the evening. Great Team✨️ (More pics in next week to follow)🙏🏽

Well done Jonny, Traci, James and Senzo!! 💗💗💗💗

Tag talk – culture, fellowship and respect, issue 1.

Before I reflect on the fast start to 2024 and how the time flies, I have to congratulate our TAG Class of 2023. You will read of their accomplishments, their plans and their aspirations which are impressive to see. But it is also important to realise that this class was really hard hit by Covid and its implications on Education. For them to come through with flying colours is an inspiration personally to me and I am sure to many of our readers and donors.

TAG TALK – Celebration Edition 2023, Issue 2

Did anyone say September, October, November, December – where on earth did the time go? This edition of TAG Talk is aptly named the ‘celebration edition’ and not because its Spring here in Mzansi but rather because of all the wonderful achievements that we have witnessed over these nine months of 2023. It is one thing presenting an opportunity, it’s another thing taking that opportunity and turning it into something truly spectacular. Because that is what our young men and ladies are doing and have been doing the entire year.

TAG Talk Compassion, Connection, Community 2023 – Issue 1

The date is set for our first TAG Party since 2019! The 27th of July will see us once again getting together and celebrating in the name of fun, education and supporting our wonderful young ladies and gents. Personally, I cannot wait, and I look forward to what should be a highlight of the year. We look forward to seeing you all there in person.

Tag Payments

N3TC accepts the automated electronic Tag payment method at all its toll plazas (including ramp plazas) between Cedara and Heidelberg.

Tag payments allow toll fees to be collected in an automated manner with the aim to reduce traffic congestion and improve mobility in a safe, cashless and convenient way at toll plazas.

Vehicles fitted with Tags are identified by electronic readers placed in toll plaza lanes. On approach users will slow down, the system reads the Tag, and if the Tag is valid for payment, the boom rises. Transactions are automatically deducted from the vehicle owner’s preapproved and registered SANRAL account. A single Tag fitted in a vehicle can be used as payment method at various toll plazas situated along South Africa’s national toll routes.

How does Tag payment work on the N3 Toll Route?

As you pass through the orange Tag lane, your Tag emits a “beep” as soon as the Tag is “read” by the system. Equipment located in the lane recognises your registered Tag. Based on the number of axles on the vehicle, your vehicle class is identified and classed. Your SANRAL account is authenticated, and if valid for payment, the transaction is recorded. Fees are automatically deducted from your SANRAL account.

Details of your transactions (invoices and statements) are available online from SANRAL at www.sanral.co.za.

Where can I get a Tag?

Tag starter packs are obtainable from SANRAL Customer Service Centres and a selection of retail outlets in major centres.

What does a Tag cost?

A Tag costs R50.00 and this cost is credited to your Tag once your SANRAL account has been registered. Please ensure that you have sufficient funds in your SANRAL account to cover the toll fees charged at the N3TC toll plazas. Remember each Tag is assigned to a single vehicle licence plate number and vehicle class. It is also linked to a specific SANRAL account with the relevant vehicle details.

The Best Gifts for Travellers From South African Brands

December 16, 2020 by Lauren Melnick

Last Updated on March 5, 2024 by Lauren Melnick

gifts for travellers

On the hunt for last-minute gifts for travellers?

You’re in the right place!

I’ve curated a list of my favourite South African brands creating gorgeous gifts for globetrotters.

Think of this post as a sneak peek into travel lovers wish list (without the expensive plane tickets to Europe and Fiji).

So if you’re a wait-to-the-last-minute stress ball shopper like, take a deep breath and add one of these affordable travel-themed gift ideas to your basket!

FYI: I have included one or two international brands with shops in the country.

Psst…Want more gift guide inspiration? Check out these other posts:

Table of Contents

Wanderlust Jewelry

Scratch map, passport holders, luggage tag, travel journal, adventure bags, eco-friendly travel toiletries, carry-on suitcase, reusable coffee travel cup, travel wallet , adventure-ready wine, adventurous raincoats, drool-worthy head gear, environmentally-friendly designer swimwear, ridiculously good-looking adventure jackets , wireless noise-cancelling headphones, travel hammock, gift a travel experience, wanderlust inspired gifts.

stoked-africa-necklace

Necklaces and earrings are travel-themed accessories to flaunt your love affair with the world.

Stoked has a gorgeous selection to choose from including one of my favourite pieces: An African continent pendant.

 Check them out here.

There is something deeply satisfying about  scratchable world maps .

Scratch away at all the countries you’ve explored and show off your wanderlust to all your visitors.

It’s the perfect gift for chronic travellers who need a global pandemic to stay in the same country for longer than three months.

scratch-world-map

But a gift like this comes with great responsibility. You might become get talked into an impromptu trip to Russia – the largest scratchable area on the map.

passport-cover

Passport holders are one of the best (and uber affordable) gifts you can buy a traveller.

The only reason my passport is in such good condition and isn’t stuck together with sellotape, superglue and hope is because my boyfriend bought me one a few years ago.

Oddly enough, it’s a travel essential I never thought to get myself.

Grab one from:

  • Thandana Bags
  • Escape Society
  • Superbalist

A luggage tag is proof that awesome travel gifts don’t need you to take out a second mortgage.

Frequent travellers use their luggage constantly, and a luggage tag can help them quickly identify their bag.

The Joinery (a sustainable South African brand) has a stylish  luggage tag  made from recycled plastic bottle felt.

luggage tag

Or you can get a personalised, handcrafted one from Cape Town brand  Journey .

travel journal

Many avid travellers are hardcore hoarders (myself included) whether it’s collecting passports, boarding passes or knick-knacks from far-flung destinations.

That’s why you can’t go wrong with a travel journal.

Bestow it upon the traveller in your life and help them document their global adventures.

Grab one from  Takealot  or Typo.

Practical Travel Gifts

Looking for some serious brownie points? Gift your wanderluster with a nifty, yet aesthetically pleasing travel bag.

There are plenty to choose from, but only two leading contenders in my books.

Your first option is Rowdy. Their  rucksacks  are not only practical and durable but look great in photos around the globe.

rowdy-rugsack

And if you’re looking to seriously spoil someone this festive season, splurge on Rowdy’s  duffel bag .

It’s one of my favourite travel companions!

Coming in second is Thandana Bags.

The proudly South African brand creates beautiful  cosmetic bags  with all the zips and compartments to keep any globetrotter organised.

An under-rated travel gift? Toiletries.

It’s something we all  need , but few of us stop to think about the environmental impact of all those tiny plastic travel-sized bottles.

Give an eco-friendly gift basket of  shampoo  and  conditioner bars ,  body wash jello ,  dusting deodorant  and  toothpaste tabs  from Lush.

solid deodrant bar from lush

You’ll give the gift of travel-sized hygiene while also helping the Earth at the same time. It’s a win-win.

carry-on-suitcase

I’m all about packing light and avoiding pesky checked luggage fees which makes a  carry-on suitcase  the ultimate practical gift.

Not sure which one to pick? I always recommend Escape Society’s range.

Mine has been all around the world with me, and it has not let me down.

P.S. If you’re buying a gift for a business traveller or a digital nomad, get the carry-on with the front-loading laptop pocket. You’ll be their favourite person forever.

From road trips to running around foreign cities, a reusable travel cup is an incredibly useful and affordable travel gift.

Be the hero this holiday season and get one for the coffee addict who can’t stop catching flights.

coffee-travel-cup

Some travellers are super Type A and pedantic.

Then you have travellers like me who are messy, disorganised and almost miss flights.

A travel wallet is a useful gift for making sure nothing gets lost. Well, at least less often than usual.

There are plenty of affordable options like this one from  Escape Society  and this one from  Thandana Bags . Both have a bunch of pockets for cards, cash, boarding passes, memory cards and even phones.

Okay, before you scoff at your screen and click that little “x”, hear me out.

Wine in a can is a thing, and it’s flippin’ delicious.

I tried out Robertson’s new RW Single-Serve during my Wild x Wanderlust Retreat , and everyone loved it (including the wine snobs!).

wine-in-a-can

There is no ‘tin’ taste, and it’s the perfect serving amount. Plus, you can fit it in your bag without worrying about broken glass and the extra weight.

Gift your wine lover a case of wine in a can for their 2023 adventures!

Wanderlust Clothing

If your traveller spends ALOT of time chasing sunsets, waterfalls and storms, gift them a raincoat from  Forecast .

**cough** landscape photographers **cough**

The colours pop in pictures, and it’s a gift any outdoor lover will appreciate adding to their wardrobe

forecast-rain-jacket

You know what a traveller  always  needs? A trusty hat.

Not only do they look fabulous in photos, but you can keep skin cancer and sunburns at bay.

My favourite “Instagram” that I bring on all my safari trips is the “ Morgan ” from SunHats.

So much so, I’ve bought the same hat twice. The first one met an untimely demise at the Valley of Desolatio n (fitting, I know).

But if your traveller prefers casual caps to epic hats, head on over to Stoked and pick up the  mustard Shaka hat . I bring mine on all my hiking adventures, and the colour looks incredible in photos.

Searching for the perfect gift for someone who is always in the water or likes to sit near water? *cough* me *cough*

Gabrielle Swimwear  is the answer to your prayers.

gabriella-swimwear

Not only are the designs drop-dead gorgeous, but the suits are made from plastic bottles!

The  Protea one-piece  is my fav, and it’s currently on sale!

kway-jacket

Calling all hikers and landscape photographers who run around in the wilderness in the wee hours of the morning!

The down jackets from Cape Union Mart are:

  • Ridiculously good looking
  • Uber lightweight and compressible
  • Insulated the house
  • 100% windproof and vapour-permeable

In short, it’s the ultimate gift for travellers who are always climbing mountains.

Tech & Travel Gear Gifts

I don’t put a foot near a plane, train or bus without my wireless headphones.

It’s an absolute lifesaver for your sanity as well as an excuse to avoid getting into conversations with strange men.

The only downside? It’s one of the few travel gifts which come with a hefty price tag but are so, so worth it.

wireless-headphones

A  travel hammock  is a perfect gift for the outdoorsy type.

It’s ideal for hikes, missions into forests, and beach days.

With a versatile gift like this under the tree, you’ll win the festive season without breaking the bank.

Experiential Travel Gifts

If there’s one thing I value more than gadgets and delicious pizza from Naples, it experiences.

After all, that’s why we travel.

We don’t sit on planes for 8-hours for stuff, but for all the wonderful new things we get to add to our memory banks.

morocco tour

Is your traveller dreaming of an overseas adventure? Gift them a spot on my 10-day Morocco Overland Tour !

Do they ooze all things luxury and high-end? Buy a gift card for a luxury lodge in Kruger National Park . Kruger Shalati – The Train on the Bridge is the park’s newest offering and is the definition of an opulent safari getaway.

I hope you got some ideas from this roundup of the best gifts for travellers from South African brands! If I left out any good ones, let me know in the comments. I’m always on the lookout for new local brands to support!

?If you like it then you should put a pin on it?

Last-minute festive season shopping? Here are some of the best gifts for travellers from South African brands to put under the tree!

4x4 Africa

Tag-along Tours & Overland Safari Operators

Tag-along 4×4 tour safari & expedition operators.

While many would argue that a pure self-drive safari is the only way to explore the African continent, there are many valid reasons why this may not be the best option for you. There are other equally pleasurable, and some would say, safer, ways to immerse yourself in the African continent, two of them being going on a tag-along tour, and the other being joining an expedition on an overland truck. Let us look at tag-along tours first, starting with-

What is a tag-along tour/expedition?

As the name suggests, a tag-along tour happens when a group of vehicles, each driven by a member of the tour party, tags along behind an experienced guide (in a lead vehicle) on a pre-planned route. Depending on the option chosen, and of course, the tour operator, these routes can take in several countries, and cover several thousand kilometers in a time span of up to 4 weeks. There are several distinct advantages to this approach, not the least of which is that you are never completely alone in a strange and often forbidding environment. In practice, and as opposed to a pure self-drive safari on which you are in large part left to your own devices, the group starts the tour together, largely stays together during the tour, and finishes the tour together as a group. So how does this work, and why would this be a preferred option, when what you really want is peace and solitude, as opposed to the trouble and strife that travelling in a group often brings? Let us explain- As with anything in life, you need to be sure what you want and need. Travelling in a group is not for everyone, but neither is travelling alone through terrain that can be extremely intimidating, if not downright scary. If you are not afraid of this, or if you are capable (and willing) to deal with border crossings (that can be trying at times), or are fit enough to dig a heavy 4×4 vehicle out of sand or mud, and if you are not afraid to deal with local laws, customs and cultures, a pure self-drive safari is for you. However, if you are not willing to deal with these issues on your own, then a tag-along tour is the ticket for you. Here is how a tag-along tour works in practice, and what you get for your money-

– Vehicles

As a rule, reputable tag-along tour operators maintain the vehicles used and driven by tour party members to the same high standards that operators of self-drive safaris do. They also make sure to only use vehicles that are up to the rigours of African off-road conditions, and besides, their vehicles are fitted out and equipped with the same equipment you would have received had you booked a vehicle for a pure self-drive safari.

– Documentation

Depending on the chosen operator and tour package, the documentation required to cross international borders may or may not be included in the tour price. However, whether it is included or not is not the main issue; the main issue is the fact that since you will be accompanied by a representative (or sometimes the owner(s)) of the tour company who also needs to cross into the next country on the itinerary, virtually guarantees that all required documentation will be supplied to all members of the party, and that all documentation will be filled out correctly.

– Route planning

One of the main advantages of a tag-along tour is the fact that the hassle of planning routes, or of planning the best routes that take in all the sights, sounds, and experiences that Southern Africa has to offer is taken out of your hands. Most, if not all tour operators are both experienced and registered tour guides in the countries in which they operate, or if they are not, they employ guides who are. This being the case, you will be led by a guide who has travelled the route you will be travelling many times before, which means that he knows (amongst other things, such as where refueling points are), the best game viewing spots and the best spots to practice wildlife photography, but more importantly, your guide also knows which parts of any particular route tends to get tricky when conditions get wet or muddy. In general, most guides will avoid these areas, but if avoiding them is not possible or feasible, he will assist with getting all vehicles safely through all obstacles. Moreover, your guide has access to the best local knowledge on terrain and conditions should circumstances require that the tour deviate from the normal route(s). This happens more frequently than you might think, and for a variety of reasons but the point is that should this happen, you will have the services of a guide who knows how to get around the problem, and how to do so safely.

– Technical support

Tag-along tours or expeditions have the advantage that should something go wrong, like for instance, a vehicle breaks down, assistance is immediately available since the support crew usually includes either a mechanic, or a knowledgeable person who has the tools, equipment, and more often than not, the required spare part available. Being able to repair the vehicle on the spot saves hours, and sometimes days of lost time, but in the unlikely event that the vehicle cannot be repaired, there is a vehicle available (the lead vehicle) with which to tow the broken vehicle at least to a spot where it can be repaired. Having an experienced support crew is also a major boon should a vehicle become stuck. With a self-drive safari, you have to get the vehicle unstuck by yourself, which is not the case with a guided, tag-along tour. Guides usually have vast experience of recovery techniques and a huge store of recovery equipment in their vehicles which means that stuck vehicles can almost always be safely recovered in mere minutes. From the above it should be obvious that tag-along tours have major advantages relative to pure self-drive safaris. However, there are some issues that you need to be absolutely sure about before you book such a tour, such as-

– Are you a “people’s” person?

Bear in mind that you will be living in close proximity to up to a dozen strangers, and that some operators expect participants to share the workload when it comes to cooking duties, setting up camp, or clearing up a campsite when you continue the tour after a camp. In many cases, the mechanic or technical guy does double duty as chief cook and bottle washer, and it could happen that he may require help in preparing meals, especially when weather conditions are trying, or when he has to perform repair work on a vehicle. In cases like this, every member of the party is expected to pitch in to get a meal on the table, so if you are not prepared to do this, a tag-along tour is not for you. Moreover, you need to be able to get along with other people, and you have to be able to take direction or advice from the tour guide. A contrary attitude makes life difficult for the entire tour party, but more importantly, you will be spoiling the entire experience for yourself.

– Can you drive for up to eight hours per day?

If you have never driven off-road before, you may not be aware that this type of driving is extremely tiring. It is like nothing you have ever done before, and you will soon realize that the intense concentration that this type of driving requires can you leave you more exhausted than you want to be. Even though tour operators are acutely aware of the fact that their guests are not expert off-road drivers, some routes require that the party drive for six to eight hours continually to reach the next point on the route before dark. For this reason, it is important that you bring along a person who can drive, and who can drive for several hours at time because the effects of exhaustion is similar to those of alcohol, which as we all know, reduces judgment and driving ability. So know that you know what to expect on a tag-along tour, you need to know something about the requirements most tag-along tour operators have in place. Bear in mind though that what follows is not an exhaustive list of requirements; you need to contact each operator listed in this guide to obtain the exact requirements each individual operator has in place. Let us start with-

– Are you licensed to drive?

As with pure self-drive safaris, most operators of tag-along tours insist that nominated drivers are at least 23 years old, and that their drivers’ licenses are unendorsed. You will also need an international drivers’ permit if your driver’s license in issued in a language other than English. Bear in mind that some operators require an international driver’s permit regardless of the language on your license.

– Are you properly insured?

While most operators offer “comprehensive” insurance packages, these are often not comprehensive enough to cover all possible eventualities, and they almost never include proper medical insurance. In fact, almost all insurance packages offered by tour operators specifically excludes items like damage to the vehicle’s paint work, glass, wheels, rims, and interior. You need to discuss these issues with the operator when you first make contact, and while some may offer insurance waivers, the added cost is often more than the cost of additional insurance to cover exclusions purchased from your own insurers. In addition, make sure you know exactly how much third-party, aka public liability insurance is included in the main rental agreement. This is important, since the offered insurance is almost never enough to cover all damages to persons and property, so get this figure from the tour operator, and purchase at least double that amount of insurance from your own insurers before you leave home. Also bear in mind that in much of Southern Africa, first world-standard medical facilities are few and far between, and where they are available, they are ridiculously expensive. For this reason, any medical insurance you buy must include recovery of the beneficiaries, as well as interim care of, and repatriation to the beneficiaries’ home country. Last but not least, you need to provide your own insurance against the loss, damage, or theft of your personal effects, with special emphasis on electronics such as cameras, computers, and the like. Tour operators generally do NOT provide insurance of this type, so make sure you have all your insurance related ducks in a row before you leave home.

– Are you on chronic medication?

While this will not disqualify you from a tag-along tour if you are, you need to make sure that you either have an adequate supply of your medication, or that you can obtain their exact equivalent(s) while you are on the tour. Bear in mind though that some preparations or even some ingredients in some medications that are freely available in Europe, are either banned in some Southern African countries, or are strictly controlled. To avoid any potential problems and issues with your medication(s), talk to your own health care provider before you leave home, or obtain the relevant rules and regulations from the embassies or consulate offices of the countries you plan to visit when you apply for your visas.

– Do you have enough cash?

As with pure self-drive safaris, the price of the tour only includes the rental fee of the vehicle, such insurance as you choose to purchase from the tour operator, and sometimes the admission to campsites and accommodation while on tour. The tour price does NOT include fuel, food, liquid refreshments, and other out-of-pocket expenses.

NOTE: The issue of food on tag-along tours needs to be cleared up at the time of first contact with the tour operator. Some operators offer self-catering tours, on which you have to buy and prepare you’re your own meals. In other cases, the costs of catering for all party members are included in the basic tour price, but be aware that this is not always the case. Make absolutely sure you know what you are paying for before you pay anything to anybody, because you could get stuck with a hefty added charge for food and catering you may not have budgeted for. Make sure you discuss the amount of cash generally required for the particular tour you are interested in, and either bring that amount (Plus a little extra) along in the various currencies you might need, or buy the currencies you need at a bank or authorized money changer at the airport when you arrive. Do NOT swap currencies at informal money changers- you might be arrested, and even if you are not, you will be robbed blind by receiving the most unfavorable exchange rate ever. Bear in mind that credit cards and travelers’ cheques are largely useless in the deep hinterland of Southern Africa and completely useless in much of the rest of Africa, so make sure you have enough cash, or that you can easily access your money while on the tour. All of the above information should be enough to help you make an informed decision about whether a tag-along tour is for you or not. If you decide that this is the preferred option, you need to know who the most reputable tag-long tour operators are, which we will list next.

Tag-along tour operators in Southern Africa

NOTE: Bear in mind that a listing here does NOT equate to an endorsement of that operator; similarly, if a particular operator does not appear on this list, it does NOT mean that operator is not worthy of consideration. We present this list of tag-along tour operators in good faith, and for general informational purposes only. Nonetheless, despite the fact that diligent research and personal experience have shown the operators listed here to be reputable, honest, and professional in their approach to both their businesses and your interests, the onus is on you, the prospective client, to do your own research and due diligence into the tour operator of your choice to ensure that your visit to Africa remains unforgettable, but for the right reasons.

Encompass Africa may be located in Australia, but the sheer variety of the safari types on offer from this company spans the entire spectrum from budget safaris, to luxury, bespoke tours that are tailor-made to suit your needs and interests. In fact, the number of available options makes it impossible to list all possibilities items here, so let us quote straight from their website-

“The other option is of course a tailor-made private 4×4 safari that we create based on your interests. It involves you arriving into Africa and meeting your private guide who is with you for the duration. After a short briefing about the customised vehicle, you venture out on your Africa safari exploring your choice of destinations and regions. This is the ultimate way to explore Tanzania [and other regions in Southern Africa] if you don’t mind travelling in a vehicle on roads and also game driving. The other option is fly-in safari. Botswana offers phenomenal mobile camping safari holidays with 4×4 vehicles as the mode of transport between camps and on game drives. A very Australian style concept is the Tag-Along 4×4 safari tour. This means you get behind the wheel of a 4×4 secure in the knowledge that you have the guidance of a qualified naturalist and driver plus support crew should you need assistance. This style trip is done in Namibia and Botswana.”

IMPI SAFARIS

Website: www.impisafaris.com Phone: +27 (0)11 264 2406 Mobile phone: +27 (0)82 622 6957 Email: [email protected] Skype: impisafaris Physical Address: 289 Lister Rd, Johannesburg, South Africa, 2090 Contact form is available here.

IMPI SAFARIS offers tag-along tours in South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. Note that while most other operators focus their tours on wildlife viewing, IMPI SAFARIS places an equal importance on the cultural aspects of the countries they visit. For instance, IMPI SAFARIS is the only operator that offers specialized tours through some of South Africa’s historic townships, such as Soweto, and others. Some of IMPI SAFARIS’ tour options and itineraries can be viewed here.

One more thing…

While there may be other tag-along tour operators that advertise their services on the internet, we believe that collectively, the four operators listed here offer the widest possible range of tour options, and best value for money, given the peculiar nature of travel in Africa. However, if none of these options are possible for you, there is yet one more way to experience Africa.

Overland Truck

While this method is definitely not for everyone, crossing Africa on a converted (sometimes-AWD) truck is nevertheless an adventure of a lifetime for the younger set that generally does not mind the relative discomfort that comes with travelling on a truck, even though the truck comes with (almost) bus-like seating. If this sounds like something you want to do, here is how it works-

– What is an overland truck?

In simple terms, an overland truck is a truck that had been converted to resemble a bus, while keeping the toughness and durability that differentiates a truck from a proper bus. However, while the enclosed body of the vehicle provides shelter from the elements, the vehicle essentially remains a truck, which makes it very difficult to provide a smooth ride. Nonetheless, there are dozens of operators that run truck expeditions all over Africa, but the problem with this is that there are instances where the comfort and safety of, and concern for passengers take a backseat to profitability. While there are many exceptions to this, we nevertheless advise prospective clients of truck operators to conduct proper research into the history, reputation, and services offered by each operator before making a booking, or paying any money to anybody.

– How does an expedition with a truck work?

The concept is simple. Each truck carries a set number of passengers, and all share in the work when meals are prepared, or when the truck needs to be dug out of a mud or sand trap. However, all reputable operators tend to avoid areas that get overly muddy at certain times of the year, as well as areas where the vehicle is likely to get stuck in sand, which means that if you choose the right operator, you may never get your hands dirty, or your feet muddy.

– How does accommodation work?

This largely depends on the tour chosen, but for the most part, accommodation is in campsites. Properly fitted-out trucks have ample storage space built into its main structure to hold camping gear and everything else that makes life on the road possible and bearable.

– How do meals work?

Most trucks have well-appointed kitchens built into their structures and depending on the operator (and the tour option chosen), meals are either prepared by a cook/guide/mechanic/tour guide, or cooking duties is taken in turn by tour party members. It may be worth noting at this point that almost all tour operators demand a set amount of cash, from each tour party member (or use a set portion of the tour price paid by each member), which amount is paid into a communal “kitty”, or food fund. This fund is used to finance all meals that are included in the tour price, and any money that remains after the tour may be refunded to each member in equal shares. However, this does not always happen with all tour operators, so make sure to discuss this with all operators you contact.

– Can anybody come on a tour?

Most, if not all, operators are acutely aware of the fact that people sometimes do not get along, and while they will not ask you if you, personally, are a people’s person, they will generally not allow young children on the tour, or people with obvious disabilities that could make accommodating that person difficult, or bothersome to other people on the vehicle.

a Major restriction is those with passports from countries that make border crossings a very difficult encounter. Best to check well in advance with the operator of the overland truck.

– What paperwork do I need?

As with holidays elsewhere in the world, obtaining visas and other travel documents for each country you will be visiting remains your responsibility. You also need to take care of your own insurance, which must include comprehensive medical insurance, as well as all inoculations required by each country on your itinerary.

– So, is a truck-based expedition for me?

Whether it is or not can only be answered by you, but given the obvious advantages of not having to drive a strange vehicle in terrain you are not unfamiliar with, the fact that you do not have to arrange accommodation or plan routes, and that an expedition on a truck is the most cost effective way to experience Africa, the minor discomforts and irritations that go with sharing a small space with strangers seems like a small price to pay. Remember that the few items listed above only describe truck expeditions in broad terms, since there are far too many specifics to list here. Nonetheless, if you have an adventurous spirit, and an expedition on a truck sounds like something you could do, or want to do, consider using one of the tour operators listed below, since we believe that the operators on this list provide the most comprehensive and professional service at the best rates. NOTE: Bear in mind that since we are not paid to list anyone, a listing does NOT amount to an endorsement of the operators listed here. Similarly, if any particular operator does not appear on this list, it does NOT mean that that particular operator is not worthy of consideration. The onus remains on you, the prospective client, to do your own research and due diligence into the services offered by any operator you may wish to deal with.

Truck Africa

Truck Africa is based in the UK, and offers tours that range from as short as lees than 2 weeks, to epic tours from London to Cape Town over a period of 41 weeks. There are literally dozens of other tour options available between these two extremes, which, makes providing specific information about what is provided on which tours all but impossible. However, as a general guide, Truck Africa generally includes the following in their tour prices- • Spacious two-person tents and camping equipment, and cooking equipment and eating utensils. • The truck’s kitchen includes a fire grill for cooking on wood, back-up gas cooker in case of rain, and cool box. A large awning acts as a kitchen extension. • Also provided are professionally-compiled Medical Kit, amp to plug your I pod into, video charging facilities, camp stools, and reference books. NOTE: A fairly comprehensive FAQ page is available here. We strongly urge prospective clients to visit this resource, as it explains many of the questions that you may forget to ask during your first contact with the company.

One last thing…

While there are dozens of tour operators that run truck-based expeditions located in Africa, Southern Africa, Australia, England, and even the United States, the two companies listed above have been researched extensively, and we believe that they offer the most diverse, professional, and economical tours. However, you may want to deal with someone else, which is why you need to visit the websites of as many tour operators as you can to find the one that will answer your needs best. To help you in your search, we suggest the following resource- http://www.tourradar.com/i/africa-overland-truck , which is a compilation of several dozen tour operators. Here, you will find contact details, as well as details of tours on offer, plus details on departure dates, itineraries, and more. Good luck with your search, and we wish you many happy memories of the African continent!

South Africa travel advice

Latest updates: Health – editorial update

Last updated: March 13, 2024 14:10 ET

On this page

Safety and security, entry and exit requirements, laws and culture, natural disasters and climate, south africa - exercise a high degree of caution.

Exercise a high degree of caution in South Africa due to the significant level of serious crime.

Nationwide power shortages or rolling blackouts, referred to as load shedding, are still occurring regularly. They are occurring numerous times a day and for multiple-hour stretches. They are expected to continue through 2023 and into 2024.

Though the potential for a nationwide blackout is low, the associated risks are high, including a nationwide loss of power for days or weeks.

South Africa has already experienced blackouts for up to 12 hours in a 24 hour period. Increased demand for power during the coldest winter months of June and July means that blackouts could last longer. Expect a dark and cold winter.

An official schedule of the planned blackouts provides advance notice of the shortages. However, they can also occur with very little notice.

Blackouts could increase the risk of criminal activity in affected areas, which could in turn lead to opportunistic theft and prolonged outages.

Blackouts can affect the following services and businesses:

  • telecommunications and security systems
  • stores and food supply
  • hotels and other accommodations
  • banks and ATMs
  • gas stations
  • public lighting and traffic lights

Interruptions to water supply occur occasionally and can be lengthy in some areas, causing considerable inconvenience.

If you’re in South Africa:

  • be prepared for extended power outages
  • make sure you always have a complete emergency kit on hand, including several flashlights
  • always carry a cell phone, power banks, chargers and a list of emergency numbers handy
  • keep a sufficient supply of water, food, medication and fuel on hand for several days
  • keep your travel documents up-to-date
  • monitor local media
  • follow the instructions of local authorities

Useful links

  • List of planned blackouts  - Eskom, South African electricity public utility
  • Get Prepared - basic emergency kit

Violent crime

South Africa has a very high level of crime. Crime is the primary security threat to travellers.

Violent crimes, including rape and murder, occur frequently and have involved foreigners.

Muggings, armed assaults and theft are also frequent, often occurring in areas that are popular among tourists. Carjackings, robbery and assault also occur.

Armed robberies at shopping malls occur. To minimize the risk of personal assault if confronted by an armed individual:

  • immediately comply
  • avoid making sudden movements
  • avoid resisting or antagonizing the assailants
  • avoid eye contact with your assailant

Crime significantly increases after dark in major city centres and townships. After dark, avoid the areas of:

  • Hillbrow and Yeoville in Johannesburg
  • Sunnyside in Pretoria
  • the beachfront and Victoria wharf in Durban
  • Cape Town downtown hotels to the waterfront

Crimes of opportunity

There is a high risk of pickpocketing. You should not carry your wallet in your back pocket.

Do not show signs of affluence, display money or carry valuables such as laptop computers or cameras.

When at restaurants or bars, do not leave your bag under your chair or table or hung over the back of a chair; keep it on your lap.

Ensure that all your bags’ zippers, straps and fasteners are closed and secure, and be aware of people behind and around you.

Criminals are known to target people who appear distracted and are not paying attention to their immediate surroundings.

If you believe that you are being followed, go directly to a police station.

Crime in and around airports

Passengers have been followed upon arrival at airports and then robbed either on their way to or once they arrived at their final destination. There are also reports of theft from checked luggage.

Some areas around Cape Town International Airport are less secure. There are reports of an increased risk of attack on secondary roads near the airport.

When travelling to and from an airport:

  • stay on highways and main roads
  • avoid shortcuts
  • if you are using a GPS, make sure that the itinerary avoid townships and secondary roads
  • plan your trip in advance and verify your travel itinerary with a trusted local source
  • consider arranging an airport transfer

On the road

Be vigilant at vulnerable points such as:

  • traffic lights
  • yield signs
  • highway off-ramps

Smash and grab incidents are frequent. This is when car windows are broken and valuables such as handbags are taken while cars are waiting at junctions.

  • Park in well-lit areas
  • Do not pick up strangers
  • Ensure that vehicle doors are locked and windows are closed at all times

Hotel theft

Theft from hotel rooms and guest houses is common. Never leave your windows or doors open or unlocked, even when you are present.

  • Check the level of security at guest houses, hotels, lodges, backpacker lodges or any accommodation before making bookings
  • Don’t leave luggage and valuables unattended; place them in safekeeping facilities
  • Don’t open the door to anyone without taking necessary precautions. If someone claims to be a member of staff, verify with the reception prior to opening the door

Police officer impersonation

Criminals may pose as police officers to extort or rob tourists. There are reports that criminals use fake IDs and flashing blue lights to stop cars with the intent to rob the passengers or steal the vehicle.

If you face this situation:

  • do not stop your vehicle
  • put on your hazard lights and continue to the nearest police station or secure location

There is a threat of kidnapping across South Africa. Foreign nationals have been kidnapped in the past. Kidnappings are generally for financial gain or motivated by criminality.

Scammers could kidnap you to extort money from your loved ones in exchange for your release.

  • Be wary of online romance, employment and money scams
  • Never accept an invitation to travel to an unfamiliar location
  • If you think you've been scammed, do not travel overseas to get your money back

Demonstrations

Demonstrations can occur anywhere across the country and sometimes on short notice. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Cases of attempted fraud are frequently reported in South Africa. Do not give personal or financial account information to anyone.

Don’t attempt to use ATMs that appear damaged or defective, or are in isolated or poorly lit areas. Don’t accept any offer of assistance with your transaction. If suspicious at any time, cancel your transaction and use another ATM.

  • Pay careful attention when your cards are being handled by others
  • Use ATMs located in well-lit public areas or inside a bank or business
  • Avoid using card readers with an irregular or unusual feature
  • Cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN
  • Check for any unauthorized transactions on your account statements

Overseas fraud

Reserves and hiking trails

There have been attacks on hikers and tourists at reserves, hiking trails, including Table Mountain, Lions’ Head, Signal Hill and other tourist attractions and their parking lots.

Avoid the Numbi Gate entrance to the Kruger National Park, as well as the R538 road leading to it due to an increase in criminal activity in the area, including the murder of a foreign national in October 2022.

  • Hike in groups and take all appropriate precautions
  • Avoid isolated picnic areas and beaches
  • Don’t stop at deserted roadside resting places on national roads

Spiked food and drink

There have been incidents of food or drink being drugged and tourists robbed when unconscious.

Never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers. Be wary of accepting snacks, beverages, gum or cigarettes from new acquaintances. These items may contain drugs that could put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery.

There is a threat of terrorism. Terrorist attacks could occur at any time. Individuals who may be inspired by terrorist groups may carry out “lone actor” attacks targeting public places, including where foreigners gather.

Targets could include:

  • government buildings, including schools
  • places of worship
  • airports and other transportation hubs and networks
  • public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners

South African authorities have successfully disrupted planned attacks and made arrests related to terrorism offences. Always be aware of your surroundings when in public places.

Regional unrest

Xenophobic attacks, primarily targeting refugees or immigrants from other African nations, related demonstrations, looting and outbreaks of violence occur. This type of unrest could occur in any region of the country and with little warning.

Avoid large gatherings and demonstrations, monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities at all times.

Townships and rural areas

Avoid townships and informal settlements if you are unfamiliar with them, except when travelling with organized tours provided by a reputable company or in association with an experienced local organization.

Wildlife viewing

Wildlife viewing poses risks, particularly on foot or at close range. Be aware of the threat of monkeys and baboons overwhelming sightseers in their search for food. They are known to get very aggressive.

  • Always maintain a safe distance when observing wildlife
  • Only exit a vehicle when a professional guide or warden says it’s safe to do so
  • Only use reputable and professional guides or tour operators
  • Closely follow park regulations and wardens’ advice

Water activities

Coastal waters have unpredictable wave and currents patterns, which can be dangerous. Shark attacks have been reported in several areas, including in KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape.

  • Follow the advice and warnings of local authorities
  • Be cautious when swimming in lakes and rivers because of the risk posed by wildlife

Water safety abroad

Telecommunications

Cellular phone reception is generally good in major towns and cities but can be intermittent in rural areas. Extended periods of rolling blackouts are impacting internet connectivity and cell phone networks.

Always carry a cellular phone in the event of an emergency. If using your own phone, ensure that it has international/roaming capability for use while in South Africa.

Road safety

Fatal road accidents are common in South Africa.  Accidents occur especially in wet conditions, as roads can be very slippery. Traffic lights are frequently out of order. GPS navigation systems may suggest the most direct route but not the safest.

  • Observe the recommended following distances
  • Avoid undertaking overland travel after dark
  • Treat all intersections with malfunctioning traffic lights as a four-way stop
  • Verify your travel itinerary with a trusted local source, such as your hotel, your travel agent or local police, before driving

Road conditions

Driving can be dangerous due to:

  • insufficient lighting
  • pedestrians crossing major highways
  • wild animals and stray livestock on the road

Driving habits

Drivers do not always respect traffic laws, especially at night. Drivers often drive at excess speed and ignore traffic signs. Drinking and driving is common.

Drivers are often aggressive toward pedestrians and fail to yield the right of way even on marked crosswalks.

Travel on foot is inadvisable in most areas. If walking is unavoidable, use only brightly lit, busy streets in popular tourist areas and maintain awareness of your surroundings.

If you choose to drive in South Africa:

  • always drive defensively
  • plan your trip in advance, especially if you are visiting a rural area
  • avoid travelling after dark
  • choose a vehicle with a robust central locking system, lockable fuel tank cap and vehicle alarm
  • use a reliable rental company offering 24-hour emergency service and ensure that you have the contact details for the service

Public transportation

Avoid using public transportation.

Tourists have been mugged and assaulted in and around bus stations. Avoid the central bus station in Johannesburg.

Train services are slow and several serious accidents in recent years have raised concerns over safety standards.

Violent attacks have occurred on commuter and metro trains between Johannesburg and Pretoria, as well as on commuter trains in Cape Town. Don’t travel by train, especially second or third class.

The Gautrain between O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and Pretoria, as well as the Blue Train and Rovos Rail, are, however, safe for tourists.

Taxis cannot be hailed in the street. Ask your hotel to arrange a taxi and ensure that you prearrange transport for your return journey.

Sit in the rear of the vehicle and keep windows up and doors locked at all times. Keep valuables out of sight and place bags by your feet. Negotiate the fare with the driver in advance. Avoid using minibuses and unlicensed taxis.

We do not make assessments on the compliance of foreign domestic airlines with international safety standards.

Entry requirements vary depending on the type of passport you use for travel.

Before you travel, check with your transportation company about passport requirements. Its rules on passport validity may be more stringent than the country’s entry rules.

Canadians don't need a tourist visa to enter South Africa. However, upon arrival, immigration officials will issue a temporary residents visa (TRV) for up to 90 days. Check the expiry date of your TRV to ensure you don’t overstay.

If you overstay without authority, you may be forced to pay a fine upon departure and/or can be refused entry for up to 5 years.

Serious offenders may be arrested before departure and detained until their court appearance. In such cases, visitors may face a very substantial fine and be deported at their own expense.

South African visas - South African Department of Home Affairs

Changing or extending your visa

Some foreigners travelling to South Africa have not gone through the correct channels to obtain, change or extend their relevant visas. This has resulted in arrest and detention due to fraudulently issued visas.

While in South Africa, you must go through regional or district offices of the South African Department of Home Affairs for information on visa requirements and issuance.

Regional travel

If you leave and re-enter South Africa, even for a short time, you will not automatically be given an additional 90-day visitor’s visa. An immigration official can deny you re-entry into South Africa. The immigration officer can also allow you to enter for a limited time only.

If you wish to extend your stay, contact the South African Department of Home Affairs 60 days before your visitor’s visa expires.

South African Department of Home Affairs contact information

Work or study

If you intend to work or study in South Africa, you must apply for the relevant visas prior to your arrival; otherwise, you risk being refused entry and may be returned to your point of origin. You cannot change the type of visa once in South Africa.

Other entry requirements

You must be in possession of a return or an onward ticket. Without one, you may be required to deposit the equivalent of a fare home with customs. The money will be refunded after departure from South Africa.

Residence permit

If you reside in South Africa, you must have valid residence permit in your passport each time you enter and leave the country.

Dual citizenship

Dual citizens must enter or depart South Africa using their South African passport only.

For further information on dual citizenship, contact the High Commission for the Republic of South Africa in Ottawa.

You must produce a long form birth certificate when travelling with children under the age of 18 to neighbouring countries. The long form birth certificate must be in English or translated into English.

Contact the nearest South African mission abroad or visit the South African Department of Home Affairs website, before travelling, to verify the latest requirements.

  • COVID-19 and International Travel - 13 March, 2024

This section contains information on possible health risks and restrictions regularly found or ongoing in the destination. Follow this advice to lower your risk of becoming ill while travelling. Not all risks are listed below.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is required if you are coming from or have transited through an airport of a country   where yellow fever occurs.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is not recommended.
  • Discuss travel plans, activities, and destinations with a health care professional.
  • Contact a designated  Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre  well in advance of your trip to arrange for vaccination.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada * It is important to note that  country entry requirements  may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest  diplomatic or consular office  of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Malaria  is a serious and sometimes fatal disease that is caused by parasites spread through the bites of mosquitoes.   There is a risk of malaria in certain areas and/or during a certain time of year in this destination.

Antimalarial medication may be recommended depending on your itinerary and the time of year you are travelling. Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic before travelling to discuss your options. It is recommended to do this 6 weeks before travel, however, it is still a good idea any time before leaving.    Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times:  • Cover your skin and use an approved insect repellent on uncovered skin.  • Exclude mosquitoes from your living area with screening and/or closed, well-sealed doors and windows. • Use insecticide-treated bed nets if mosquitoes cannot be excluded from your living area.  • Wear permethrin-treated clothing.    If you develop symptoms similar to malaria when you are travelling or up to a year after you return home, see a health care professional immediately. Tell them where you have been travelling or living.

In this destination, rabies is commonly carried by dogs and some wildlife, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal. While travelling, take precautions , including keeping your distance from animals (including free-roaming dogs), and closely supervising children.

If you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional. In this destination, rabies treatment may be limited or may not be available, therefore you may need to return to Canada for treatment.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who are at high risk of exposure (e.g., occupational risk such as veterinarians and wildlife workers, children, adventure travellers and spelunkers, and others in close contact with animals).

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Travellers' diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travellers. It is spread from eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

Risk of developing travellers' diarrhea increases when travelling in regions with poor standards of hygiene and sanitation. Practise safe food and water precautions.

The most important treatment for travellers' diarrhea is rehydration (drinking lots of fluids). Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.

There is a risk of schistosomiasis in this destination. Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by tiny worms (blood flukes) which can be found in freshwater (lakes, rivers, ponds, and wetlands). The worms can break the skin, and their eggs can cause stomach pain, diarrhea, flu-like symptoms, or urinary problems. Schistosomiasis mostly affects underdeveloped and r ural communities, particularly agricultural and fishing communities.

Most travellers are at low risk. Travellers should avoid contact with untreated freshwater such as lakes, rivers, and ponds (e.g., swimming, bathing, wading, ingesting). There is no vaccine or medication available to prevent infection.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever is a viral disease that can cause fever, pain and bleeding under the skin.  In some cases, it can be fatal.  It spreads to humans through contact with infected animal blood or tissues, or from the bite of an infected tick.  Risk is generally low for most travellers.  Protect yourself from tick bites and avoid animals, particularly livestock.  There is no vaccine available for Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever.

Rift Valley fever is a viral disease that can cause severe flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can be fatal. It is spread to humans through contact with infected animal blood or tissues, from the bite of an infected mosquito, or eating or drinking unpasteurized dairy. Risk is generally low for most travellers. Protect yourself from insect bites and avoid animals, particularly livestock, and unpasteurized dairy. There is no vaccine available for Rift Valley fever.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Tuberculosis is an infection caused by bacteria and usually affects the lungs.

For most travellers the risk of tuberculosis is low.

Travellers who may be at high risk while travelling in regions with risk of tuberculosis should discuss pre- and post-travel options with a health care professional.

High-risk travellers include those visiting or working in prisons, refugee camps, homeless shelters, or hospitals, or travellers visiting friends and relatives.

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)   is a virus that attacks and impairs the immune system, resulting in a chronic, progressive illness known as AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).

High risk activities include anything which puts you in contact with blood or body fluids, such as unprotected sex and exposure to unsterilized needles for medications or other substances (for example, steroids and drugs), tattooing, body-piercing or acupuncture.

Medical services and facilities

Medical facilities and supplies are widely available in large cities but can be expensive. Medical facilities are limited in remote areas.

Public and private health facilities require an up-front cash deposit for services, guarantee of payment or confirmation of medical insurance before commencing treatment.

Air evacuation may be the only option when faced with a medical emergency in remote areas.

Decompression chambers are available in many hospitals.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Travel health and safety

Keep in Mind...

The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller. The traveller is also responsible for his or her own personal safety.

Be prepared. Do not expect medical services to be the same as in Canada. Pack a   travel health kit , especially if you will be travelling away from major city centres.

You must abide by local laws.

Penalties for using, importing or exporting drugs are severe and may include lengthy imprisonment.

Drugs, alcohol and travel

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and South Africa.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in South Africa, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the South African court.

If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in South Africa to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children’s Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country’s judicial affairs.

Traffic drives on the left.

You may use your valid Canadian provincial driver’s licence in South Africa, however, an international driving permit (IDP) is strongly recommended.

It is extremely difficult to obtain car insurance for car rentals or to purchase a car without an IDP. Insurance companies and rental car agencies often require proof of a South African driver’s licence or an IDP to honour an insurance claim, even when such proof was not requested at the time the policy was secured. An IDP must be obtained in Canada before travelling to South Africa, as it cannot be obtained locally.

If your licence is in French, it is advisable to obtain a translation into English and carry it with you.

Foreigners driving a rental car across any border into neighbouring countries must obtain a permit from the Cross-border Road Transport Agency prior to arriving at the border crossing. Failure to do so may lead to arrest and/or a fine.

It is illegal to carry gasoline in portable containers.

  • Obtain a permit  - Cross-border Road Transport Agency
  • International Driving Permit

The currency is the South African rand (ZAR).

Canadian currency can be easily exchanged at major banks and foreign exchange counters. A passport and additional identification is required when undertaking foreign exchange transactions.

Foreigners are permitted to enter South Africa carrying a maximum of ZAR100,000, or US$10,000 or its equivalent in foreign currencies. Customs forms are not required to be completed, but random customs checks are conducted.

Rain Storms

The climate varies from region to region. Storms and flooding can occur throughout the country and at various times of the year. Flash storms can occur in Gauteng and North West provinces from November to April. There are heavy rains along the south coast from June to September and the Western Cape receives heavy rainfall between May and September. Dirt roads can become hazardous during these periods. After heavy rains, do not attempt to cross low-lying river bridges by car or on foot, as there have been fatalities linked to people being washed down river. Keep informed of regional weather forecasts and plan accordingly.

Veld (bush) fires are common during dry seasons. They are very unpredictable and extremely dangerous. They can spread very quickly and travel at speeds of 60 km/h or more, due to high winds. Stay clear of active fires and always verify local conditions with relevant authorities before going on bush walks, particularly during the dry seasons.

The Western Cape Province, including Cape Town, can experience periods of prolonged drought. Local authorities may impose water use restrictions. You could be fined if you do not comply with these restrictions.

Africa’s Travel Indaba 2024 promises unparalleled value for delegates with tailored networking sessions, insights-driven panel discussions, speed marketing sessions showcasing new tourism products, a sophisticated match-making diary system, airline and Tourism Grading Council pavilions, and a wide array of products from across the African tourism sector.

Africa’s Travel Indaba 2024 has already sold-out floor space. The participation of twenty-six African countries, solidifies its status as a proudly Pan African show. Furthermore, 120 SMMEs will be hosted at the Hidden Gems zone in collaboration with the Department of Tourism.

Preceding the main event is the Business Opportunities Networking Day (BONDay) on May 13th, offering invaluable networking opportunities, thought leadership discussions, and insights into global trends.

Partners for the event and provincial hosts, KwaZulu-Natal Tourism, have organized pre- and post-tours for selected delegates, including media and buyers, to showcase various experiences and products.

Mr. Siboniso Duma, MEC Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We are excited to welcome Africa’s Travel Indaba back to KwaZulu-Natal again in 2024. Africa’s Travel Indaba plays a significant role in our tourism growth as KwaZulu-Natal and has immeasurable impact on our economy. Again, this year, we will have several emerging tourism entrepreneurs participating as part of the Tourism KZN, Tourism Enterprise Development Programme to afford them an opportunity to showcase their businesses and lock business deals to help them grow in the sector.”

Commenting on KZN’s readiness to host Africa’s Travel Indaba 2024, Mr. Duma highlighted the province's accommodation facilities, stating, “The province has adequate accommodation establishments within a reasonable travel distance to the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, the venue for the event.”

eThekwini Municipality Chairperson of Economic Development and Planning Committee, Councillor Thembo Ntuli emphasized the significance of Indaba for Durban, saying, “Indaba is an instrumental platform for the tourism industry which is firmly on the road to recovery. The show has become synonymous with the city of Durban as we have hosted this Africa’s critical tourism showcase over many years. The city’s economy will benefit immensely from hosting this three-day long trade showcase as hotel occupancy is expected to be between 85 to 95 percent. In addition, local tourism products and community tourism organizations are ready and eager to engage with buyers, tour operators, and travel agencies to continue selling Durban as the destination of choice.”

The 2023 edition witnessed remarkable growth, with a nearly 62% increase in attendance and over 1033 exhibiting companies, attracting 8688 delegates from twenty-two countries and contributed (R 451 546 283) to eThekwini's GDP and R 597 051 772 to KwaZulu-Natal underscoring the event's significance.

Ms. Lindiwe-Rakherebe, Chief Executive Officer of the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre, expresses, “The Durban ICC is thrilled to once again host Africa’s Travel Indaba. This prestigious event plays a vital role in showcasing Africa’s rich and diverse tourism offerings to the world. Delta is reinforcing its No. 1 position as the largest U.S. carrier to Africa this winter by relaunching daily* service to Lagos, Nigeria (LOS), from  New York-JFK on Dec. 1. Fleet enhancements in service to Accra, Ghana (ACC), and South Africa are also underway.

The airline carries more than half a million customers between the U.S. and Africa each year on more than 34 weekly flights.

“These enhancements reflect our dedication to meeting the evolving needs of our customers,” said Joe Esposito, Delta’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning. “We’re expanding our options for customers to experience the premium service and elevated hospitality they expect from Delta.”    Delta currently operates daily service between Atlanta and Lagos and, with the resumption of daily New York-JFK service, will offer a total of 14 weekly flights to Nigeria in December through the first half of January and 10 weekly flights for the remainder of winter 2024.

Customers on this flight will have a choice of Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin experiences on the  Airbus A330-200 . Once on board, customers in Delta One can look forward to an extensive food and beverage program that includes thoughtfully curated menu options, as well as specialty snacks and premium beer, wine and spirits. Customers flying in Delta Premium Select will have more space to relax and stretch out, with a wider seat, deeper recline, an adjustable footrest and leg rest.

All customers can enjoy a wide selection of in-flight entertainment options – movies, TV series, music, podcasts and more – via Delta Studio. Delta also partners with diverse suppliers worldwide for in-flight products such as artisan-crafted amenity kits and beverages like Thrive Farmers Tea.

Premium upgrades in service to Ghana and South Africa

As the first U.S. airline to initiate service to Ghana, Delta remains the largest operator in the U.S.-Ghana market, offering year-round daily service from New York-JFK.

Furthermore, in late October 2024, Delta will upgrade its aircraft serving Ghana to the 281-seat Airbus A330-900neo , adding nearly 1,000 more seats each week, providing 30% more capacity between Ghana and the U.S. The aircraft features four differentiated cabin experiences: Delta One Suites, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin.

Delta One Suites feature a sliding door for enhanced privacy, memory-foam mattress and soft bedding made from recycled materials. Delta One customers can also enjoy more beverage options and a seasonal chef-curated four-course meal.      Delta is also upgrading its aircraft from Atlanta to South Africa, where it operates 10 weekly flights year-round to Johannesburg (JNB) and Cape Town (CPT). With the introduction of the higher-premium 35H  Airbus A350-900 , this upgrade will provide an additional eight Delta One Suite seats, bringing the total to 40, along with improved operational performance. Customers can look forward to these changes for JNB effective Jun. 20 and CPT on Sept. 9.   For more information and to book travel, visit delta.com .

*This route will initially fly daily, shifting to three times per week on Jan. 16, 2025.
