Phuket, a rainforested, mountainous island in the Andaman Sea, has some of Thailand’s most popular beaches, mainly situated along the clear waters of the western shore. The island is home to many high-end seaside resorts, spas and restaurants. Phuket City has old shophouses and busy markets. Patong, the main resort town, has many nightclubs, bars and discos.

Patong Beach is large and full of activity, with vendors offering rental lounge chairs and umbrellas, and a variety of water sports. Smaller Kata Beach, to the south, is also busy. Karon and Rawai beaches, near the island’s southern tip, and those along the island’s northwestern and eastern coasts, are more tranquil and less developed. Phuket is also known for its scuba diving among coral reefs, its Gibbon Rehabilitation Project and the neighbouring islets of Phang Nga Bay, which have dramatic, towering limestone cliffs and caves. Other attractions include the Wat Chalong Buddhist temple complex and the Phuket Big Buddha statue.

Chiang Mai is a city in mountainous northern Thailand. It’s Central Old City area still retains vestiges of walls and moats from its history as a cultural and religious centre. It’s also home to hundreds of elaborate Buddhist temples, including 14th-century Wat Phra Singh and 15th-century Wat Chedi Luang, adorned with carved serpents.

Outside the central Old City, Nimmanhaemin Road is lined with sophisticated galleries, boutiques, cafes and restaurants cooking the signature local dish, khao soi (egg noodles in curry). Also offered around town are traditional khantoke dinners – served on low tables in teak pavilions – accompanied by classical Thai music and dance shows. What people love about 7 Day Thailand Tours

This trip gives a well paced overview of central North Thailand. G Adventure organized the trip well and their travel manager Sek was amazing.
Everything went as planned. My guide Fon was very knowledgeable & accommodating.
Great tour but the Bangkok to Chiang Mai journey could have been planned much better. You are told to take an early flight so we had to leave the hotel at 5am. They they collect you and transfer you to the hotel by around 10.30am. You can't check in until 3pm and the tour doesn't begin again until 1.30pm so you just have to wait in the lobby for 3 hours. We were going to book a flight that arrives at 11.15am but was told that it was too late; why? Luckily our tour guide and driver brought the afternoon tour forward to 12.40pm. It would have been better to charge slightly more and include the flight and have everyone arrive at around 12 Noon. Drop off the bags at the hotel and then go on the afternoon tour. Alternatively, allow the people to arrive on the 11.15 flight. That is still two hours prior to the afternoon activities.

Thailand or Sri Lanka: Which Backpacker Haven to Visit?

Thailand vs Sri Lanka

Ah, the fabled Land of Smiles and the wave-washed Pearl of the Indian Ocean. These are two of Asia’s most enthralling, enticing, and mystical destinations. They are known for their warm climates and even warmer people, ancient temples, and stunning coastlines . They’ve each got taste-bud-tingling cuisines and rich histories that go back millennia. But which is better for you – Thailand or Sri Lanka?

Thailand is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. It’s been a mainstay on the backpacker trail since the 1960s, and its popularity shows no signs of wavering. Why would it? White-sanded islands, chili-topped masaman curries, and gold-tipped Buddhist shrines all ensure it remains something special. Then there’s Sri Lanka. Small but stunning, it’s fringed by coral-filled bays, has endless surf, and mountains clad in tea.

Torn between which tropical destination to choose for your next trip? Fear not. We’ve done the hard work for you. From the general vibes to the beaches and hotels, our extensive guide answers all your questions and then some. But which country gets our vote? Thailand or Sri Lanka? Keep reading to find out…

Table of Contents

Thailand or Sri Lanka: General vibe

Thailand beach

Thailand and Sri Lanka are tropical countries, one in South Asia, the other in the heart of Southeast Asia. They’re both home to diverse cultures, languages, and religions. Both are steeped in history, Sri Lanka with its colonial heritage and Thailand with its ancient Buddhist traditions. On the face of it, you’d think they’d be quite similar. However…

Sri Lanka is eight times smaller than Thailand. The island lies in the Indian Ocean, southwest of the Bay of Bengal and southeast of the Arabian Sea, almost 1,300 miles from Thailand. Like Thailand, Sri Lanka is known for its friendly locals and atmosphere. Yet, Thailand has been welcoming tourists for far longer than Sri Lanka (mainly because of a brutal civil war). That means that the Land of Smiles is a touch more traveler-friendly overall, though Sri Lanka probably offers a rawer, more authentic cultural experience.

Thailand is the perennial heart of Southeast Asia. The country has long been a mecca for backpackers, holidaymakers, and expats. Whether you like the city, the beach, or a bit of both, Thailand has it all, and there’s no shortage of things to do, no matter your budget . The country is almost 200,000 square miles in total size, compared to Sri Lanka’s 25,000 square miles. We can’t say that Thailand boasts the small island vibe that Sri Lanka does, but there are certainly islands in Thailand that do (Lanta, Samui, Tao).

Winner : Draw – these are two different but also oddly similar places.

Thailand or Sri Lanka: Ease of travel

Mountain in Thailand

Whether you’re off on a six-month backpacking adventure or a two-week honeymoon, the same question will always crop up, how are you going to get there? Thailand and Sri Lanka might be on either side of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, but are they as easy to reach?

Thailand has several international airports to choose from, including two in the capital city of Bangkok and a busy arrival hub in Phuket. This makes travel to Thailand’s southern islands easy, no matter how much time you have in the country. Sri Lanka has two international airports, but most flights arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport, and you’ll likely need to connect in Delhi or Chennai before flying to Colombo. As an island, Sri Lanka is inaccessible by road and train. In contrast, you can reach Thailand by land or continue your southeast Asian travels cheaply by bus into the neighboring nations of Cambodia and Laos.

Still, despite its small size, Sri Lanka has a well-developed transport system. A famous railway of over 1,000 miles links Colombo to the rest of the country, and Sri Lanka’s road network consists of around 62,000 miles of highway. Infrastructure has developed in Sri Lanka as tourism has risen. Any town in even the most remote areas of the country is reachable by local bus, and the ticket is likely to set you back less than one dollar for a single trip.

As a relatively small country, it’s easy to see a lot of Sri Lanka in a short amount of time. If local transport is not your thing, car hire and tuk-tuks are popular options and are still cheap and accessible forms of transport. However, Sri Lanka is less equipped for large-scale tourism than Thailand. Overcrowded buses moving along jammed roads where locals ignore traffic lanes can be a little chaotic. Whether you’re a passenger or navigating the streets in your own hired car, travel can be both adventurous and slightly terrifying in Sri Lanka.

Thailand is well prepared for tourism. Getting around is uncomplicated with cheap domestic flight routes, local buses, overnight trains, and a developed ferry system between the southern islands and all the mainland ports. We’re convinced Thailand earned its title as the “Land of Smiles” because of the ease of travel. At every port, there’ll be helpful locals waiting to guide you onto the next portion of your travels, whether you’re switching from a ferry to a bus or looking for the next station.

Thailand is sizeable, and you’ll struggle to see everything even if you have weeks to spare. With so much of the country to explore, domestic flights and island hopping can get tiring. Still, Thailand is unmatched when it comes to being equipped for the backpacker trail.

Winner : Thailand.

Thailand or Sri Lanka: Beaches

Beach in Sri Lanka

As tropical hotspots, beaches are likely to be at the top of the agenda when visiting Sri Lanka and Thailand. But how do they square up in comparison to each other?

As an island nation, beaches contribute to Sri Lanka’s allure. Like Thailand’s southern isles, you’ll find golden sands, palm-fringed shores, and coral reefs all along Sri Lanka’s 800 miles of picturesque coastline. Sri Lanka’s west coast is perfect for sunbathing and water sports, with the calm, warm waters of the Laccadive Sea welcoming visitors. Yet, despite the Indian Ocean’s picturesque appeal, it’s advised not to swim off Sri Lanka’s coasts for the majority of the year.

Hidden undertows and big breaks make for dangerous conditions, and most visitors don’t venture beyond waist depth anywhere across Sri Lanka’s shores. But this does make Sri Lanka famous for one phenomenon for which Thailand doesn’t accommodate: surfing.

Sri Lanka is world-famous for hosting breaks suitable for all levels. The country is also a year-round surf destination because seasonal patterns mean that when one coast is calm, there’ll be beaches on the other side that are adequately choppy. From November to April, in Sri Lanka’s high season, the southwest coast of Hikkaduwa is a hotspot for hardcore surfers. And from May to October, hit up the east coast of Arugam Bay for the best breaks.

On the other hand, Thailands 1,500 islands that stretch across the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea promise diversity above all else. From Koh Phi Phi’s pristine white sands overshadowed by lofty limestone peaks to Koh Phangan’s rustic golden shores, clear shallow waters, and rows of imperfect palm trees, Thailand’s beaches are anything but monotonous.

Thailand is also home to world-famous beaches, like Maya Bay, the location for Danny Boyles’s blockbuster drama, “The Beach.” There is no shortage of breathtaking beaches for snorkeling, swimming, scuba diving, and sun-bathing, meaning Thailand steals the win over Sri Lanka for variety. Still, even though you can’t float freely in undisturbed crystal clear water like you can in Thailand, Sri Lanka’s beaches offer a different kind of wild bohemian allure that you shouldn’t underestimate.

Winner : Thailand.

Thailand or Sri Lanka: Nature

Hiking in Sri Lanka

Away from the body-packed beaches of Koh Samui and the Phi Phis, Thailand still has some vast and untouched swathes of natural land that’s just waiting for the true adventurers. Let’s start in the north around Doi Inthanon, a 2,500-meter peak that’s the tallest in the country. It’s part of its own national park near to Chiang Mai and is ringed by hiking paths and ancient elephant trekking routes. The middle of the nation is dominated by the Khao Sok National Park, a maze of lagoons and karst mountains that’s stalked by tapirs and langur monkeys. Further south again and you get the Thale Ban National Park, a largely unknown dash of primeval jungle.

Sri Lanka is smaller, so it follows that it has less protected land. However, the Teardrop of India still packs one hefty punch on the nature front. We put a lot of that down to the region known as the Central Highlands. They rise over the southwestern beaches to the heights of Pidurutalagala (the highest) and the Horton Plains National Park. Within, you’ll find gushing waterfalls and rolling vistas of emerald tea fields. Then you get the safari meccas. They’re like nothing Thailand can muster, offering a taste of a more African outing with their savannahs stalked by leopards and elephants (check out Yala and Udawalawe for that).

Winner: Probably Sri Lanka on account of the safari potential!

Thailand or Sri Lanka: Food

Sri Lanka food

Food plays a massive role in the traditions and appeal of Sri Lanka and Thailand. Locals love to feed each other, and their guests and food is central to hospitality practices in both cultures. While Thai cuisine is well-known and freely available worldwide, Sri Lankan food culture is more obscure but heavily influenced by some of the most famous global cuisines.

Spices, seafood, and traditions are central to Sri Lankan food, which combines Indian staples with island ingredients. Fish curry, roti, and samosas are just some national favorites. A journey through Sri Lanka promises the most authentic local food that you won’t find readily available outside of the country. Ambul Thiya, the sour fish curry found at nearly every restaurant, is made with tuna, chili, cinnamon, turmeric, garlic, and dried goraka. Sri Lankan curry is actually known to be spicier than Indian food.

Thailand has a similar street food culture to Sri Lanka, with the cheapest and most authentic dishes served at small stands and local restaurants. But Thailand also boasts no shortage of western restaurants, which threaten to dilute your authentic experience of Thai cuisine. What’s more, there’s a high chance you’ll have had a few Pad Thais and Green Curries before you’ve ever visited Thailand. While the food is aromatic and fragrant, Thai food lacks spice and variety compared to Sri Lankan cuisine, and visitors are known to bore with it quickly.

Winner : Sri Lanka.

Thailand or Sri Lanka: Price of travel

A shopper in Bangkok

As backpacker havens, Thailand and Sri Lanka are generally among the cheaper holiday destinations in the world and easy to travel on a shoestring . That said, the average price does differ a little from place to place…

On average, consumer prices are 37% higher in Thailand than in Sri Lanka. That means mid-range restaurant meals cost around $5 in Sri Lanka compared to $10 in Thailand, while single journeys on local transport can cost as low as $0.15 in Sri Lanka compared to $2 in Thailand. That all adds up, to the point where we’d estimate that you can get by on around $25 per day in Sri Lanka enjoying the same comfort that $35 would buy you in Thailand.

Sri Lanka certainly has its fair share of uber-costly places to stay – in the form of palatial, five-star honeymoon resorts with sea views. They’ll set you back hundreds of dollars a night just as they do in Thailand. However, the lower end of the spectrum is considerably cheaper in Sri Lanka, where hostels and guesthouses still sit at under $5 for the night in some places.

One caveat: Recent political turmoil (throughout 2022) in Sri Lanka has seen runaway inflation and the effect that’s going to have on the tourist industry is still unclear. It might be that prices go up and stay up in the Teardrop of India, in which case the country will probably cost around the same as Thailand in the next few years. Watch this space, though.

Winner: Sri Lanka, at least for now.

Thailand or Sri Lanka: Nightlife

Palms in Sri Lanka

We’ve all heard crazy stories about the Khaosan Road, Phangan’s epic Full Moon Parties, and Phuket’s heady Patong Walking Street. But can Sri Lanka compete when it comes to nightlife ?

They might not be quite on par with some of Thailand’s bustling beach towns, but the coastal areas of Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, and Mirissa are all great partying areas if dancing until the early hours is what you’re after. Sri Lanka will surprise you with its party scene with beach clubs and all-night festivals galore. The capital city of Colombo has a few of its own iconic partying spots like Zaza Bar in the Dolce Casa Colombo Hotel and Loft Lounge that are not to be missed.

Still, nightlife tends not to be a prominent feature on the Sri Lankan itinerary, and partying isn’t the most significant pull factor to the country. Whereas, it’s safe to safe that Thailand’s vibrant party scene draws tourists in year after year. Ever since Thailand emerged on the backpacker radar in the 1960s, it’s been a mecca for partying. You can find diverse and world-famous nightlife nationwide, but does this give Thailand more appeal?

Fifty years of development and skyrocketing tourism means some of Thailand’s most outstanding areas of natural beauty threaten to be destroyed by their party scenes. On Koh Phi Phi, the once peaceful and remote Edenic paradise, it’s near impossible to escape the sound of the booming Stones’ DJ decks once night falls. And as the home of the iconic full moon party, the same can be said for Koh Phangnan. If partying is your thing, make sure you check out Stones and

In Thailand, the nightlife almost exclusively caters to a western audience outside Bangkok, while locals are known to party with tourists in Sri Lanka. The impact of party tourism on Thailand’s plastic problem also puts the benefits of thriving nightlife into question. Is Thailand’s party scene diluting the country’s rich cultural heritage? You decide.

Winner : Draw.

Thailand or Sri Lanka? Our verdict

Honestly, we think every traveler should visit both of these places at least once. You can even do them in the same trip – it’s about a two-hour flight to Colombo from Bangkok, usually costing under $100. However, if you can only do one then you’ll need to consider the sort of adventure you want.

Thailand is a tried-and-tested tourist mecca. It’s got some of the world’s most iconic beach resorts, on Phuket and Samui, but also loads of backpacker-vibe places like Koh Lanta and the mountain town of Pai up north. Traveling around tends to be easier on account of the tourist infrastructure and it’s generally a little easier to reach in the first place, though the costs are likely to be higher.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, remains less developed in a tourist sense. You can still escape the resorts of the southwest coast and venture to wild mountains or even remote village in the north where hardly any other visitors go. The island – in our humble opinion – also touts the better food and comes with amazing surf, just in case you were bringing the board in tow. We also like that it offers safaris in the African style, with glimpses of wild elephants and leopards.

Sri Lanka and Thailand offer a nightlife experience to their visitors occupied with vibrant food, drinks and music. Both the countries have different experiences when it comes to the nightlife.

Sri Lanka’s nightlife is somewhat centered to its capital, Colombo and beach sides. Colombo offers great deals of nightclubs and pubs as well as casinos and restaurants that are open during the night.

Thailand is popular for its nightlife. If you’re looking for a place to party all night, this place has a huge range of places. Bangkok is so far the best city that offers different types of bars and nightclubs. Every place offers drinks and food with a variety of music to enjoy.

Polonnaruwa

The culture of a destination is important to understand everything about the place. Both these countries, without any doubt, have a fascinating culture that is blended with modernization.

Sri Lanka has a history with royals and ancient kingdoms. The culture is blended with influences from Indian, Europe and Arab cultures. Sinhala and Tamil new year, Esala perahara are some of the colorful festivals that are celebrated.

Thailand is inspired by the siamese civilization. The fusions from Sukhothai kingdom to the modern world, its history is complex. The people are deeply rooted to Buddhism and animist traditions. Songkran and loi krathong festivals offer a glimpse to Thailand’s vivid culture.

Thailand has plenty of street food options. They also have guest houses on budget. Together with taxi service it will cost $25 per day.

Both the countries can give an excellent experience to the value of money. This budget will let anyone explore and enjoy without the stress of spending too much.

Bentota

Sri Lanka and Thailand are tropical countries. But they have a slight difference in the pattern of the weather.

Sri Lanka has two major monsoon seasons: southwest monsoon and northeast monsoon. From May to August the southwest parts get rain, and from October to January the northeastern monsoon begins. This vice versa makes it the best time to visit other parts. The temperature here ranges from 27-32 celsius degrees.

Thailand has 3 main distinct seasons: cool, hot and rainy seasons. The cool season is recommended as the most comfortable season to visit. The hot season has a harsh weather with temperature upto 35 celsius and above. And the rainy season has heavy rainfall that will end shortly.

So which is better: Sri Lanka or Thailand?

Both of the countries are equally magnificent and have a lot to offer to whoever visits. Each of them has their own unique culture and hospitality.

The natural greenery and the beaches of both the countries are astonishing. And the wide range of food with inspiration of different culture fusion gives the chance of choosing the best dishes.

In every aspect, both countries are equally affordable for a great vacation. It’s up to you to consider which country to choose depending on the weather, safety, cost and the climate. Whatever the country you choose, it will for sure give you an ultimate experience.

Turkiye, Vietnam's Top Pick Among Bengaleureans, Sri Lanka Is Catching On.

Mahipal Singh partner Sonana Travel World Nagarathpete has observed a surge in bookings for Turkey, Dubai, Hong Kong, and various places in China; Istanbul, Cappadocia, and Antalya are the most visited spots in Turkey. Explaining the charm of Turkey, Mahipal says, "Turkey offers a mixed vibe of Europe and Asia. Since getting a visa for European countries has been tough in the last few months, people have been flocking to Turkey.” Bangkok and Pattaya in Thailand have long been a fixture on the itineraries of Indians. Now, people are searching for newer shores like Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, and Langkawi in Malaysia. Seychelles are another destination in demand, he observes.

Thailand remains a famous choice for its easy visa-on-arrival failure, nightlife, and beaches. Vietnam is also seeing a lot of bookings. "The visa procedures to Vietnam are easy, and Indians have not explored them much," says Mahipal. Nesara also gets a lot of bookings for Bali and Vietnam. "These are cheaper travel options currently. Also, these places are close to nature and have beaches. March is a good season to travel there," adds Karthik.

Thailand and Malaysia are the top countries to be chosen at Sanman Travels because they are affordable reasons Shamnth.

As per Rajiv Mehrotra, executive director of Wilson Garden's Holiday Concierge, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Dubai, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan have remained top choices among Bengalureans since 2022. "Other picks are Christian pilgrimages in Europe that cover around 45 churches spread across nine countries like Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands," Rajiv says. #indianews #indiaupdate #tourism #attractions #internationaldestination #travel #visa #tours

Thailand allows visa-free entry for Sri Lankans from tomorrow

Colombo, July 14 (Daily Mirror) - Thailand will allow visa-free entry for travellers from 93 countries and territories, including Sri Lanka from tomorrow (July 15).

This marks the first time Sri Lankans can travel to Thailand without obtaining a paper visa. Thai citizens can already visit Sri Lanka visa-free, subject to a USD 10 processing fee.

The new policy, announced by Thailand's Ministry of Interior, extends the visa-free stay from 30 to 60 days. Visitors must have proof of funds, accommodation, and return or onward tickets.

Entry remains at the discretion of immigration officers at airports.

According to Ministry spokesperson Traisuree Taisaranakul, this change will benefit tourists and short-term business travellers. The number of countries eligible for visas on arrival will increase to 31. Thailand has seen a 35 percent rise in foreign arrivals this year, totalling 18.2 million visitors and generating 858 billion baht (USD 24 billion) in revenue. China, Malaysia, and India have been the largest sources of tourists in 2024, with around 350,000 Sri Lankans travelling to Thailand annually.

Also, Thailand will introduce the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) on July 15, targeting digital nomads, freelancers and those seeking to learn skills like cooking and martial arts.

This visa allows stays of up to 180 days and is valid for five years. Applicants must apply for the DTV at the Thai Embassy in their country. Moreover, visiting students earning a bachelor's degree or higher in Thailand will be permitted to stay for one year post-graduation to seek employment, travel or conduct research.

Thailand has VISA free entry for tourists from most developed countries provided it less than 30days stay. Why? because they know they can earn more in tourist $ than trivial VISA fees. It is obvious that something funny is going between the Minister of Tourism and VFS at the detriment of larger tourist $ income into the country. Corruption in this country has been the cause of downfall. We all await early for resurrection of "Lee Kuan Yu" within the ranks of politics in this country.

Where is SL visa system? It is funny that it says Thai people fan get visa to SL free, but subject to a $10 processing fee, whereas Thailand gives free visa without any fee. SL has so much to learn from these countries. But the sad thing is SL will never learn. A sign of a perennial developing country.

Sl should also learn from Thailand if we are to promote more tourist to come.

Cherath Monday, 15 July 2024 09:21 AM

Outside supermarkets in developed countries they display 1 or 2 popular items at surprisingly low prices (like apples, tomatoes, a vegetable etc) to draw passersby potential customers. Once inside, they are tempted to purchase few other things to fill their bags and make their visit worthwhile. The company makes enough profits thereby.Thailand and many other countries do not have Visa fees - so people are encouraged to visit and spend for accommodation, meals, travel, souvenirs etc. In SL after paying a hefty £75 for Visa tourists pay 47 to 50 times what local pay to visit historic sites. Thailand charges only 4 times the local rates from foreigners. And with zero Visa fees, No wonder then they attract 39 million tourists this year.

visa free Monday, 22 July 2024 12:54 PM

Thailand can afford to issue a free visa to enter the country to foreign tourists because they receive ten times more tourists than Sri Lanka since it is cheaper and has much more to offer . Thailand received 28 million foreign tourists to Sri Lanka"s meagre 1.4 million foreign tourists in 2023.

Sri Lanka is a destination that has it all. This teardrop-shaped island off the coast of India has seen its share of difficulties, but in the past two years it has emerged as one of the most vibrant and exciting countries for travel. Tourist arrivals in the first half of 2024 are up 60% compared to the same period in 2023, a promising sign for this resilient nation.

The Dondra light house on the southern tip of Sri Lanka.

With awe-inspiring cultural attractions, sacred pilgrimage sites, tea plantations and laid-back beach towns, Sri Lanka is a thrilling country that appeals to all kinds of travelers—from families and honeymooners to foodies and surfers. Time Out even ranked Sri Lanka the #1 best place to visit for solo female travelers . Have we piqued your interest? Here’s everything you need to know to plan a perfect trip to Sri Lanka.

Located south of India and east of the Maldives, Sri Lanka is a tropical country close to the equator. It has two monsoon seasons: the Southwest Monsoon from May to September and the Northeast Monsoon from December to February.

Cinnamon Air , Sri Lanka’s largest domestic air carrier, makes traveling throughout Sri Lanka a breeze. The airline offers daily scheduled flights to popular destinations (a 30-minute flight from Colombo to Sigiriya will save you a 5-hour drive) and exclusive charters at competitive prices. Cinnamon Air has three aircraft, including two seaplanes, ensuring flexibility in landing in different terrains, such as Castlereagh’s natural reservoir or Koggala Lake in the south.

If you prefer to travel by land, there are many taxi services available throughout Sri Lanka and the roads are surprisingly well-maintained. In Colombo, you can use Uber, the PickMe app or tuk tuks to move around. For longer rides, companies like TinyCabs and BlueSky Galle Taxis are available for ground transfers and tours throughout the country.

Tuk Tuks are a popular method of transportation in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is also famous for its trains but be sure to book your tickets early — the famous Kandy to Ella train ride books out a month in advance. You can reserve tickets directly on 12Go or use a booking service like Visit Sri Lanka Tours which can purchase tickets on your behalf (with a mark-up). In both cases, you’ll need to stop by one of Sri Lanka’s train stations with your reservation in hand in order to print out your original tickets. Tip: second class reserved seats are ideal because you can keep the windows down for the best views!

Sri Lanka is unique for a myriad of boutique, locally-owned hotels dotted throughout the country. If you need help choosing where to stay, We Stay Ceylon has a handpicked collection of unique properties throughout the island and can help design a personalized itinerary as well.

Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle

Although many people will flock to Sri Lanka for its surf scene, it is worth spending time exploring the island’s cultural triangle as well. Located in the fertile center of the country, this area is a testament to Sri Lanka’s longstanding heritage and boasts five UNESCO Sites, each worth visiting.

Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is Sri Lanka's most famous UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sigiriya is Sri Lanka’s uncontested jewel. An ancient rock fortress that rises 600 ft above a canopy of thick jungle, it served as Prince Kashyapa’s 5 th century royal palace before being used as a Buddhist monastery. If you have time, it’s also worth climbing Pidurangala Rock which lies directly in front of Sigiriya: this other mountain is a nature reserve and best suited for intrepid travelers.

Anuradhapura is a sacred heritage city in Sri Lanka.

To the north of Sigiriya lies Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s first capital founded in the 4 th century which flourished for over 1,000 years. With large stupas and a sacred fig tree (a descendent of the original Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment), it remains an important pilgrimage site.

You can also visit Sri Lanka’s second capital, Polonnaruwa, which features monumental ruins built between the 11 th to 13 th centuries. The ruins are spread over 1,100 sq miles and include intricately carved palaces, city council buildings and evocative shrines. Nearby, art lovers shouldn’t miss Dambulla’s five painted caves featuring over 150 statues of the Buddha.

The painted cave temples of Dambulla.

On the southern end of the Cultural Triangle is Kandy, the last capital of the ancient kings and today the second-largest city after Colombo, the capital. Kandy is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic which is believed to shelter one of the Buddha's teeth. Three ceremonies are performed here each day and travelers are welcome to join to experience this unique tradition.

Hill Country

As you depart south from Kandy, you’ll come across Sri Lanka’s verdant Hill Country. While the island may be known for its tropical temperatures, it is also the fourth largest producer of tea in the world — a feat for a relatively small territory. This is thanks to its cool, misty mountains around cities like Nuwara Eliya, Ella and Hatton.

Tea plantations near Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka.

Introduced by the British in the 19 th century, after a coffee rust fungus devastated the country’s coffee plantations, tea remains a ubiquitous part of Sri Lankan culture. Referred to as Ceylon Tea, the country’s colonial name, black tea is dominant in Sri Lanka’s over 400 tea plantations. Tea is still plucked by hand by a highly skilled workforce of primarily Tamil women whom you will see hard at work throughout the country’s technicolor, undulating plantations.

Plucking tea in Nuwara Eliya.

In Nuwara Eliya, pay a visit to Pedro Tea Estate, while in Ella, it’s worth taking a short tuk-tuk ride to Uva Halpewatte for an educational factory tour. Trains were developed to help transport goods, including tea, from the inland regions to coastal ports, so be sure to take a train ride while you’re in the area. The Kandy-Ella line is the most famous and sells out quickly so look into alternative options like Nuwara Eliya to Hatton where you can relax by the spectacular Castlereagh Reservoir, a truly otherworldly scene.

Sri Lanka's coastline covers 800 miles so sunbathers and surfers will be spoiled for choice. Where you go will depend on the season. If you visit between December and April, head south and west where Sri Lanka’s tourism is most developed. Stretching from Colombo down to Tangalle, there are dozens of beach towns worth visiting so you’ll need to make some choices.

Surf beach Hiriketiya, Dikwella, Sri Lanka.

Bentota, home to landscaped garden villas Lunuganga and Brief Garden , will delight architects and culture hunters. Hikkaduwa is popular for its turtle hatchery and Tsunami Museum which commemorates those lost during the deadly tsunami which killed over 30,000 people in Sri Lanka in 2004.

Galle, a fortified Dutch-Portugese town is a must-see for its colonial architecture and many boutique hotels while Ahangama is the newest hip locale with lively bars, concept shops and cool hotels. Weligama and Mirissa have been popular surf destinations for the past decade and many whale watching excursions leave from here. Further east, Hiriketiya is another small surf paradise with beach clubs and cool cocktail lounges where you can hang out until the early hours.

For unique nature and culture excursions along the southern coast, reach out to Donga . Founded by four friends, this small, sustainable tour company offers immersive tours of Koggala Lake’s mangroves, rainforest treks through Sinharaja, pottery experiences, walking tours and more.

If you visit between May and November, you’ll have better chances of sunshine along the northern and eastern coasts. Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Arugam Bay are the most popular resort towns in this area.

Sri Lanka has the highest biodiversity in Asia which you can enjoy viewing across its 25 National Parks dotted throughout the island. Yala National Park is the most famous, with the highest density of leopards in the world, though its popularity also means it’s quite crowded. Other options include Minneriya, located close to Sigiriya (perfect for a half-day tour) and Udawalawe, known for its large population of Asian elephants.

Other animals you can see throughout national parks are sloth bears, water buffalo, spotted deer, jackals and monitor lizards. Sri Lanka is also a great place for birding — peacocks are ubiquitous and you're likely to see the Sri Lankan Junglefowl alongside migratory birds like flamingos and herons.

Most trips to Sri Lanka will begin or end in Colombo, and it’s worth spending a couple of nights in the capital to soak in its buzzing energy. Highlights include the iconic red-and-white striped Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct located in a colonial-era hospital, and the Colombo National Museum which provides a historical and cultural introduction to the country.
