Tiger Brewery Tour Singapore Review

Tiger Beer Factory Brewery Tour Singapore

If you’re a beer drinker and have been in Singapore for any amount of time, you’ve most probably tried the local Tiger beer. The Tiger brewery is located on the far west side of Singapore in Tuas very close to the border near Malaysia and they have tours every day except for Sunday between 1pm and 5pm. They actually started having tours on Saturday this year as previously it was only open on weekdays during which time most people are at work.

I’d been on the tour twice previously when friends had come to visit me in Singapore and had really enjoyed it so I decided to go again with a group of friends a few weeks ago. We booked the 4pm tour on a Saturday on their website and took bus no. 182 from Joo Koon MRT for around 10 minutes to get to the Tiger brewery. If you’re going there on a weekday for the 5pm tour, I wouldn’t advise trying to flag down a taxi from Joo Koon as the majority of taxi drivers won’t take you as they don’t want to get stuck in the rush hour traffic coming from Malaysia on their way back from the brewery and will probably tell you that they’re changing shift as an excuse. If you want to take a taxi it’s best to pre-book or call for one.

Tiger Beer Factory Brewery Singapore Tour Waiting Room

The tour started promptly at 4pm, if you arrive early there’s a waiting area near the reception where you show your tickets. You’re given a card to be worn around your neck to show which tour you’re on and also some drink coupons which can be used later.

Our tour guide this time was quite good, he explained everything clearly although he was a little too sarcastic at times. The other tour guides I had on previous tours were also very good and very friendly too.

Tiger Beer Factory Brewery Singapore Tour Awards And Artefacts.jpg

At the start of the tour you’re taken into another building and given a short video to watch explaining about the history of Tiger beer and it’s origins. You can then look at some of the awards that Tiger beer has received such as the Monde Selection award as well as some historical artefacts including old Tiger beer bottles and a Tiger Cub bottle which is a low- alcohol beer produced during World War II due to a shortage of ingredients. You can also see a sculpture of Marina Bay Sands hotel made from Tiger Beer cans.

You’re next taken to another room where the tour guide will give an explanation on the ingredients used to make beer and you’ll get a chance to touch and smell them too.

Tiger Beer Factory Brewery Singapore Tour Ingredients Used To Make Beer

You’re then taken into the factory to see where the beer is made and the process used to make it. Unfortunately you’re unable to take photos inside the factory.

On the way to the factory outside there are some photo opportunities where you can take pictures with a huge Tiger beer bottle, an old truck used to transport barrels of Tiger beer and a tiger.

Tiger Beer Factory Brewery Singapore Tour Huge Tiger Beer Bottle

After you’ve learnt how beer is made, you’re taken into a room to watch a video on how the beer is packaged into bottles and cans and then you’re taken to another room where you learn how to pull a pint and you get to try it out yourself after which you can drink the beer 🙂 If you’re in a big group they usually only allow 2 people to do this.

Whilst you’re enjoying your beer you can walk around the room and have a look at some of the artefacts on display and there’s even a bottle sorting game which you can play.

There’s also a Merlion statue made from Tiger beer cans:

To finish the tour you’re told about the other beer brands that are owned by Heineken Asia Pacific which also owns Tiger Beer. The entire tour takes around 1 hour.

Now for the part which everyone’s waiting for – the 45 minute free flow beer session! You’re taken into their very own pub called the Tiger Tavern. The pub has a pool table and dartboards which you can use to play or you can sit back and relax in one of their comfortable sofas.

Tiger Beer Factory Brewery Singapore Tour Tiger Tavern

To start off you’re given a pint of Tiger beer to drink after which you can use one of the drink coupons that you received earlier to get free flow beer including Tiger, Tiger Radler Lemon, Heineken, Archipelago, Guinness, Baron’s Strong Brew, ABC Extra Stout and Anchor Smooth. The free-flow beer comes in small glasses but this is ok because it allows you to try all the different types and you can always go back for more! Baron’s Strong Brew is the strongest beer with an 8.8% ABV and Tiger Radler Lemon is the weakest at 2% ABV. I really like dark beers so Baron’s Strong Brew and Guinness were my favourites (no I’m not an alcoholic! hehe). I didn’t really like the Tiger Radler Lemon though as it was a little bit sweet and I didn’t like the lemon flavour. Besides the free flow coupon you’re given a coupon for a pint of either Tiger or Heineken beer which I claimed right at the very end of the 45 minute session so that I could enjoy it slowly afterwards. Make sure you claim all your drinks before the 45 minute session is up as they can be quite strict with this but it really depends on the person serving you which is usually your tour guide. The first time I went on the tour, the guide was really nice and gave us an extra drink and allowed for us to stay after hours since he was playing pool there after work with some of the other staff. Other tour guides may be eager to get home though so you should leave by the time the pub closes at 7pm. They also sell other brands of beer that are under Heineken Asia Pacific if you wish to continue drinking after the free flow session or if you want to try other types of beer.

They used to give bowls of Singapore mix to nibble on whilst you drank but they’ve stopped doing this and there’s now a vending machine where you can buy nuts and other snacks.

Tiger Beer Factory Brewery Singapore Tour Tiger Den Souvenir Shop

There’s a gift shop called the Tiger Den just next to the Tiger Tavern which sells Tiger merchandise so you can bring back a souvenir or get a present for one of your beer-loving friends. The shop closes at 6pm though so make sure you buy everything before then especially if you’re on the 5pm tour as it may be closed by the time you’ve finished.

I’d definitely recommend going on this tour if you’ve never been before, it’s interesting and informative, so much fun and great value at only $18! It’s a good place to take friends that are visiting you in Singapore or just for a fun afternoon out. Even though I’ve been 3 times now I don’t think I’d ever get bored of it!

Tiger Brewer Tour Address: 459 Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim, Singapore 639934 Tel: 68603005 Tour Schedule: Monday – Saturday: 1pm, 2pm, 3pm (walk-in only), 4pm, 5pm

Tiger Brewery Tour Blog Review: History, Making and Taste of Tiger Beer!

The only Tiger Cub Beer bottle in existence

When we visit a country, one of the things we enjoy doing is to visit the local brew. Be it sipping on the Pineapple IPA in Hawaii or the Tangerine Wheat beer in Eureka’s Lost Coast Brewery , these experiences at a local setting give us a feel of the places we visit. Likewise, in Singapore, what better place to enjoy the local brew, than at its source? Tiger Brewery Tour offers just that!

Getting to Tiger Brewery Tour

The only part that we disliked about Tiger Brewery Tour is that it is located at such a ulu (Singlish for “out of the way”) area in Singapore. Why can’t they locate it in the heart of the city like the Heineken Experience in Amsterdam ?

Tiger Brewery is located at 459 Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim, Singapore 639934. Translated to “Very Far”. This is the far west of Singapore and to get there, we took the MRT and alighted at Joo Koon MRT Station before taking bus 182 which alights the entrance of Tiger Brewery . By the way, Google maps is inaccurate in that there are currently no buses that take you from Boon Lay MRT Station to Tiger Brewery . Otherwise, the tour (and the beers) were fantastic!

Our Tiger Brewery Tour Experience

Tiger Brewery Visitor Centre located opposite Archipelago Brewery building

When we arrived at Tiger Brewery, the first thing we had to do was to provide our identification in exchange for our passes. Don’t forget this. Without age verification, you’ll not be able to join the Tiger Brewery Tours. Next, we headed to the Visitor Centre where our guide Colin (you have to remember your guide’s name!), told us some interesting history about Tiger Beer. It is also here where we see all the accolades that Tiger Beer has won throughout the years.

Interesting Tiger Beer Testimonials - From a Barrister

Did you know that during WW2, instead of Tiger Beer, Tiger Cub was brewed instead? It was said that due to the shortage of raw materials during WW2, a “reduced version” of Tiger Beer was brewed instead. It was sold until 1947 and the only bottle of Tiger Cub Beer in existence today, resides at the Tiger Brewery Visitor Centre.

Next, we headed to the Brew House where we learnt about the 4 main ingredients that goes into Tiger Beer – Malt, Hop Yeast and Water. We also learnt that the water used is actually NEWater and that it is #brewedbythesun because the entire process of brewing Tiger Beer is powered by solar power. If you observe closely, there are many solar panels that line the buildings at Tiger Brewery, allowing the brewing process to be wholely powered by solar energy. Colin then told us more specifically about the process that includes milling, mashing, boiling, fermentation, storage and filtration. Locally, 6 brands are brewed at Tiger Brewery: ABC, Anchor, Barons Strong Brew, Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, Heineken and Tiger Beer.

Packaging Gallery Tiger Beer Brewery Tour

At the Packaging Gallery , we learnt how cans and bottles are cleaned, filled and pasteurized before distribution. Here, you’ll also be able to try to tap your own beer. To be able to try to tap your own beer, you’ll have to answer a few questions including the name of your guide (remember the part above where we asked you to remember the name of your guide?). Kate was able to answer it immediately and got to taste the first freshly tapped Tiger Beer during this tour. The other question was about the temperature at which Tiger Beer should be served at. That’s 5 to 7 degrees 😉

Tapping your own beer at the packaging gallery of Tiger Brewery Tours

Lastly, we ended our tour at the favourite part of the Tiger Brewery Tour – Beer Appreciation Session! Included in the price of the ticket of Tiger Brewery Tour, you’ll be able to enjoy a 500ml Tiger Beer from the tap as well as 5 additional glasses (150ml each) from the following choices of

Baron’s Guinnes ABC Anchor Tiger Black Tiger White Tiger Radler Heineken Archipelago (dependent on what is on tap) Erdinger Weiss Erdinger Dunkel Strongbow

Beer appreciation session during Tiger Brewery Tour

You will be given the 5 sampling tickets at the start of the tour. Don’t lose them! You can also purchase additional tickets at only $5 for 5 sampling tickets which is quite worth the value. Alternatively, there is also the option of visiting Tiger Tavern from Tuesdays to Sundays between 1:30pm to 6:30pm at the price of $11. This includes a 500ml beer and be able to purchase subsequent beers at $4 or $5 nett. That’s not too bad a deal too.

As for snacks, you can bring your own snacks or purchase them through the vending machines there. Perhaps you can even try to bring KFC there for lunch? Just before we left, we returned our Tiger Brewery Tour passes and exchanged for a bottle of freshly brewed Tiger beer…

Tiger Brewery Tour in Singapore: A Peek into the Factory of Singapore’s Iconic Tiger Beer

Please share this article if you think it's awesome!

On one sunny Friday afternoon, my friend, my husband and I made our way to the far west of Singapore for the Tiger Brewery Tour. I was eager to join this tour because of curiosity. Meanwhile, both of them were really looking forward to the beer tasting session, obviously.

Would I recommend it? Yes, absolutely!

Getting to the Factory

The address of the brewery is: 459 Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim, Singapore 639934. If you are taking public transport, take the MRT and alight at Joo Koon. Afterwards, take the Exit A, walk into FairPrice Hub building and follow the signs to Bus Interchange.

At Joo Koon Bus Interchange, take bus 182 or 182M. Alight 6 stops later, at Asia-Pacific Brewery bus stop. Walk a couple hundreds of metre in the same direction of the traffic, and you’ll find the entrance on your left. The entrance is a small gate, so pay extra attention, otherwise, you might miss it.

If you drive, complimentary parking is available.

Location on Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/yh4Jf2akTbBZfJTZ6

Booking, Admission Fee and Schedule

We booked the tour online on Tiger Brewery Tour’s website . You can also walk-in but you’ll end up paying $2 more compared to if you book it online.

The admission fees for adults are as follow: Walk-in: S$20 for weekdays and S$22 for Saturdays. Online: S$18 for weekdays and S$20 for Saturdays.

Meanwhile, the admission fee for child is S$12 regardless of day and method of booking.

The guided tour is available from Monday to Saturday (excluding public holidays), at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm and 5pm.

The Introduction Part

The guided tour consists of approximately 45 minutes introduction, followed by approx. 45 minutes beer appreciation session. At the registration desk, we were given a lanyard and a beer token to be exchanged with beer. Let’s get started!

The tour starts at the Visitor Centre, where an introduction video was played at the beginning of the tour. Then, our guide showed us various awards won by the brewery, bottle packaging, glass and can designs, as well as advertisements of the beer since the beginning until now.

Evolution of Tiger Beer bottles, cans and other accessories

Next up, it was Ingredients Kiosk, where we could see what goes into a Tiger Beer. There are four main ingredients: malt, hops, yeast and water. The display kiosk allowed us to touch and smell the ingredients.

Malt and Hops are the first two ingredients of Tiger Beer

Yeast and Water are the last two ingredients of Tiger Beer

We got to touch and smell the malt!

The third stop was the brew house, which was located at the second floor. Photography was not allowed in the brew house, so I didn’t snap any photos.

Photography wasn’t allowed inside the Brew House 🙁

Basically, the steps in Tiger Beer brewing involve: crushing the malt to separate its content from the husks, adding warm water to the crushed malt and heating them in stages to produce a mash, filtering the extract (wort) of the mash from the husk, adding hop extract to the wort for distinctive aroma and bitterness, boiling the wort, cooling the wort, and adding yeast for fermentation to produce young beer. The young beer is stored until it matures and develops the final taste and flavour. Finally, the mature beer is filtered to remove yeast cells and coagulated protein particles to achieve a sparkling, bright brew.

From the Brew House, we climbed down the staircase to the lawn for a couple of photos with the Tiger Beer truck and the giant stone bottle of Tiger Beer.

Here, the guide showed us how to do the perfect serve. We didn’t get to do it ourselves though. The guide remarked that we should hold the glass at the bottom, not the body, to prevent the heat from our hands to affect the beer’s temperature.

The Tasting Part

Lastly, we came to the exciting part, the beer appreciation session. We were given 45 minutes for beer tasting in the Tiger Tavern.

First, we were given a glass of Tiger Beer. Once we finished it, or decided we’re done (we are not required to finish any beer we were given), we had to return the glass. Then, we can request for beer samples.

There was no limit of how much beer we could have, there was only 1 rule: at any point of time, we can only hold 1 glass. That was a great deal. We had Archipelago’s Irish Ale, Bohemian Lager, Singapore Blonde Ale, Belgian Wit and Limited Edition; Heineken and Tiger Silver. Other available beers were Guinness, Anchor, Baron’s and ABC.

We chatted with the bartenders and fellow tour attendees, played some darts and pools, checked out the souvenir shop (Tiger Den), and laughed like there’s no tomorrow.

But all good things must come to an end. We gave our token and had our last glass of beer before making our way to the bus stop.

Tips: Check Tiger Brewery Tour’s Facebook page regularly for any promotion. Who knows if they’re having discount! We went to their roadshows back in May and received brochures with a promo code for 50% discount. Life’s great!

More spinning mass for the tiger's triple.

F or the 2024 model year, the US will see only the Tiger 1200 Explorer models hitting dealership floors, while our friends up north will have the Pro models only. In 2025, the whole family will be getting back together in both countries. 2024 Triumph Tiger 1200 Explorer

The Tiger 1200 Explorers receive minor updates for the 2024 model year with a focus on engine internals.

Editor Score: 90.0%

  • Big Triples will always be fun
  • Resolute in the face of Scottish weather
  • Every touring comfort you could ask for
  • Still snatchy on/off throttle
  • Prices continue to creep
  • We're pushing some serious weight in Rally Explorer trim

Little has changed overall for the Triumph Tiger 1200 since its major overhaul for the 2023 model year – and really, that's not a bad thing. When we last tested the bike in March of 2022 , Triumph had given its open-class ADV a ground-up redesign leaving nothing untouched. A combination of weight loss, increased power, and an overall massive upgrade in adventure performance elevated the Tiger 1200 from a long-toothed senior, to a serious contender in the open-class ADV segment. For 2024, the Explorer models get a few thoughtful tweaks with a focus on the "balancing strategy" and rotational inertia of the engine. Let's get into it.

Light makes right, right? Well, not always. It's interesting to listen to a manufacturer talk its way around the fact that it purposefully added weight to its engine. Particularly so, when it comes to Triumph who, for the past several years, has put an emphasis on making its engines as light as possible. From the modern classic range, to the tech-heavy ADVs, and all the sporty bikes in between, adding lightness to these modern mills has been the goal. Removing heft from engine components brings with it a plethora of benefits which obviously includes overall lower weight, but also lets the engine spin up freely to create an exhilarating sporting experience. That said, many bikes don't spend their lifetime at high rpm, and here is where a little weight in just the right place can have a major impact on the riding experience.

Triumph have now added weight to both the crankshaft and the stator rotor in an effort to increase the "flywheel effect" of the crankshaft which, in theory, should help to deliver smoother torque at low speed and make the bike less likely to stall at low rpm – something particularly useful for off-road riding. Of course, Triumph didn't just slap on a flywheel weight and call it good, the added mass was strategically developed and placed to make the most beneficial impact, requiring a change in production processes along the way.

The revised crankshaft is forged and twisted up to 180 degrees in order to allow Triumph to undercut the counterweights. In doing so, this allows the counterweights to be as efficient as possible with more weight located on the outer rim where it will give the most flywheel effect. In addition, the heavier stator rotor also adds spinning inertia which should help the big Triple at low rpm. With all the variables that a crankshaft affects, this is not a simple undertaking and requires a comprehensive effort from nearly every component in the engine. Thus, the balancing strategy and engine calibration all needed to be revised in order for this approach to deliver a better experience for the rider.

While most of the other changes for 2024, like the half-inch longer clutch lever, flatter redesigned rider seat, and damped handlebars are certainly aimed at making the rider more comfortable, really, the second biggest addition to these Explorers is going to be the inclusion of what Triumph calls Active Preload Reduction. While this new feature comes standard for 2024, the software can be retrofitted to any Tiger 1200 sharing the same semi-active Showa electronic shock. To initiate Hinckley's version of adaptive ride height, the bike must be under 40 mph. From there, a long press of the home button will lower the seat up to 0.78 inches and will stay in the lower position until you manually raise it (using the same process), or crest 51 mph. Initially, that number seemed high, but this was a well-thought out decision by Triumph, who didn't want to force motorcyclists bouncing around town to have to constantly be lowering the bike when coming to a stop.

Riding Tigers in the land of unicorns

Our experience of the Scottish countryside was much like Glasgow itself – a juxtaposition of old and new. Ahead of our ride, we were able to spend some time walking around town. Much like rocketing through the countryside on what would be akin spaceships not so long ago, there's a stark contrast between old buildings set against ultra-modern architecture in the city. There is also always a cozy pub a few blocks away serving up warmth, not by electronically heated grips and seats, but by way of savory pies and peaty drams meant to warm your soul – and, more than likely, you'll find an old man or two who's been soaking up the spirits long enough to become chatty. "I've always been fascinated with motion and quickness," the old man said, his glossy eyes staring off into a distant memory while his snow white beard partially conceals the ruddy cheeks underneath.

We left Mar Hall, an 18th century Edwardian mansion Triumph chose as basecamp, and headed north under the overcast sky in light drizzle toward the Trossachs via a mix of alphabetized UK roads. It was a proper Scottish start to the day replete with bagpipes mixing with the sound of English Triples as we begat our adventure. With my seat and grips heated, waterproof layers donned, and pinlock inserted, er, wait… I forgot to install the Pinlock into my new Shoei Neotec 3… amateur. Oh, well. Who needs to be able to see with all of these rider aids! Off we went.

The Tiger 1200 Explorer is just as good as I remembered, and while I'm typically bummed when we don't get to test adventure bikes off-road, there's a sense of relief that also comes with the job not involving sliding, jumping, and/or generally going fast on loose surfaces on 575-pound motorcycles. Instead, we got to enjoy the Tiger Explorers in what might be a more realistic habitat for the big tourers.

As we wound our way through narrow country roads, we used all 148 hp and 96 lb-ft (at the crank) to make quick work of slow moving traffic with excellent feedback and composure from the Stylemas and semi-active suspension. Both brewed confidence as we made passes on the wet and dirty tarmac whether it be at full tilt or in corners (that we could see through, of course) while skirting our way north.

Despite the nice folks at Shoei installing the SRL3 Sena communicator, I found myself enamored with the sound of the 1160cc Triple. Winding the T-plane crank up and down with the intake howls accentuated by the quickshifter pop during aggressive throttle application, it's nearly as pleasant as a good set of pipes. Combine that with a chassis that can handle the aggression while being utterly stable and what's not to like?

The 34.5-inch seat height of the Rally Explorer was where I appreciated the Active Preload Reduction, but even then, with the added mental overload of cramming everything I needed to know about this bike into my jetlagged mind, riding left, and the inclement weather, it was hard to remember to activate the feature. We also didn't spend much time bouncing around the city, where I think this feature would really shine on the Rally model. The most surprising aspect of the Rally Explorer though, was how much more confident the bike felt while cornering. It feels like there may be a profile issue with the Metzeler Tourance tires found on the GT model. Between the two, the Rally sliced up wet corners much more precisely and confidently than its supposedly more road-biased sibling. Triumph lead/chase riders agreed, having admitted the handling felt so off they assumed the tire was at low PSI (or bar in that part of the world). Perhaps a tire swap would alleviate the issue, but I can't say for sure.

An issue that seems to persist despite the work on low rpm power delivery from the added inertia, is the on/off throttle snatchy-ness. It's still there and doesn't feel much different. Once the revs start to climb, the machines are as smooth as ever, but the abruptness around town is still annoying and seems to likely stem from the driveline. With how excellent Triumph has managed its engines to this point, I'm doubtful the problem is fueling as it seems to only be a problem on these shaft-driven models. If I were smitten with the Tiger 1200 as a whole, it's not enough for me to discount it, but it is there.

So here is where I find myself asking, if a new full price 2024 model was sitting next to a full-price 2023 model, which would I choose? There's a $700 price increase for 2024, and if that was all it cost me to get the newest model with these changes, yes, I'd opt for the 2024. The reality is, if there are 2023 models sitting around, they're likely going to be discounted. Without riding the two machines back-to-back, I can't suggest to our readers that the 2024 model is night and day different from the previous model year, so opting for a ‘23 could net you a smoking deal on a pretty stellar touring machine. Of course, if you don't find yourself needing the extra 2.6 gallons of fuel, heated grips and seats, TPMS, and rear-facing radar, you could always hold out for 2025 and get the Pro model which will have the same updates.
