Graphite Design Tour AD HD Shaft Review
- BY Tony Covey
- Nov 30th 2020
- Read all comments
Graphite Design Tour AD HD Key Takeaways
- The Graphite Design Tour AD HD is the evolution of the Tour AD MT.
- It has a mid-launch/low-spin profile.
- Street price is $379 and it’s available now.
The Graphite Design Tour AD HD can reasonably be described as a modernization of the Tour AD MT profile. It shouldn’t be considered a replacement.
As I’ve said with every Graphite Design release I’ve covered, the company prefers to extend the line rather than replace models. Graphite Design likes to keep the catalog intact for fitters who have grown comfortable with certain designs knowing it can take a couple of years for a new shaft to catch on.
It’s also true that while the profile of the Tour AD HD is similar to the AD MT, there’s likely enough differentiation between the two that the older model may perform better for some golfers.
Tour AD HD – What’s New
As we’ve come to expect from Graphite Design, what’s new with the Tour AD HD boils down to slight tweaks in the profile made possible by the inclusion of TORAYCA M40X graphite prepreg in the mid and tip sections of the shaft. Graphite Design first used the material in last season’s Tour AD XC and it’s reasonable to assume it will be a staple of Graphite Design shafts moving forward.
In an effort to avoid the quagmire of a deeper material discussion, the simple- ish version is that M40X offers a rare combination of high-tensile modulus and high-tensile strength.
Finer technical points aside, Graphite Design says the material allows them to better tune stiffness without increasing weight. The payoff for the golfer is increased loading of shaft and ultimately more speed at impact .
Combine that with T1100G in the tip section and, according to Graphite Design, you get stability without loss of feel.
It should go without saying that your actual mileage may vary based on how well the shaft fits your swing.
Graphite Design Tour AD HD Options
Like other AD shafts, the Tour AD HD is designed and manufactured in Japan. The company describes the AD HD as having a mid-launch, low-spin profile. As is typical for Graphite Design, it is available in a broad range of weights and flexes – everything from a 40-gram R2 (senior flex) to an 80-gram TX (Tour X-stiff).
Graphite Design Tour AD HD Cosmetics
It’s one thing to say the cosmetics of the shaft don’t impact performance; it’s quite another to say they don’t matter. We all like what we like and may lean towards one shaft over another because of it. That’s just how it is.
So, with that said, the new colorway is probably my favorite of the Tour AD line (though I liked the Tour AD VR as well). Unless you’re a Duke fan or you plan on pairing it with an electric green Callaway Epic, there’s nothing not to like graphically. It’s aqua (maybe teal) on white. I’d describe it as frosted matte. Graphite Design calls it matte clearcoat. Semantics aside, I’d say it’s definitely not glossy but not flat, either.
Tour AD HD Data – Powered by COOL CLUBS S3
We’ve partnered with Cool Clubs , one of the golf industry’s leading custom fitting companies, to bring you shaft reviews powered by its Shaft Simulation System (S3) .
Not only does S3 give us standardized quantitative information about the shaft(s) being reviewed but the data we share will provide you with a much better sense of how those shafts compare with similarly spec’d offerings on the market.
Keep in mind there’s no agreed-upon industry standard to define each section of the shaft so it’s not uncommon for S3 classifications to differ from manufacturer stated-specs. S3 data allows for uniform comparisons across manufacturers.
For this comparison, we wanted to see how the new Tour AD HD differs from last season’s Tour AD XC as well as the best-selling shaft in the Graphite Design lineup , the Tour AD IZ. For this comparison, we looked at stiff flex models in the 60-gram range.
Tour AD HD Launch Characteristics
The dark gray line represents the S3 database average for stiff flex shafts in the 60- to 70-gram weight range. The light gray line represents a neutral profile, is effectively the baseline for a mid-launch profile.
With launch characteristics that place it nearly on the neutral line, within the S3 database, the Tour AD HD is classified as a MID launch shaft.
The following chart compares the stiffness of the Graphite Design Tour AD HD in the butt, mid and tip sections to the S3 database average of stiff flex shafts in the 60- to 70-gram range.
Balance Point
The following chart compares the balance point of the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ to the S3 database average of stiff flex shafts in the 60- 70-gram range.
The Tour AD HD has a lower than average balance point. This tells us that the shaft should not be considered counterbalanced. As you may recall from our Golf Geeks Story on Shaft Performance , a higher balance point allows for more head weight without drastically impacting the swingweight. For golfers seeking more distance (admittedly often at the expense of accuracy), this allows drivers to be built to longer playing lengths.
Conversely, I suppose it’s reasonable to describe non-counterbalanced shafts as more conventional.
Tour AD HD Swing Speed Recommendations
The chart below provides swing speed recommendations for the entire Tour AD HD lineup.
Note that these recommendations are based on the full range of Cool Clubs ‘ building and fitting capabilities, including factors such as tipping and build length which can cause a shaft to play either softer or stiffer.
To simplify things a bit, you may wish to narrow these ranges. The sweet spot from a fitting perspective begins 25 percent from the slow end of the range. As a general rule, players with faster tempos, particularly in transition, may fit into a stiff flex while smoother swingers often fit into a softer flex.
Similar Shafts
Finally, we looked in S3 for shafts with similar specifications across key parameters (profile, weight, torque, etc.). Not surprisingly, the most similar shafts in the database include the Tour AD BB, Tour AD GT and Tour AD XC . This isn’t particularly surprising, though it’s worth repeating that differences within the Tour AD line tend to be subtle but appreciable.
Graphite Design Tour AD HD Availability and Pricing
The Graphite Design Tour AD HD shaft is available now through fitters and Graphite Design resellers. MSRP is $500, though the actual street price should be less than $380.

Tour AD DI Hybrid Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight
The Tour AD DI Hybrid shaft boasts some of the same technologies as shafts produced by more well-known brands.
It has a lot to offer…for the right kind of player. Are you a good fit for this hybrid graphite/carbon fiber shaft?
Find out as I tell you about my experience testing the Tour AD DI.
Tour AD DI Shaft Overview
I have tested one or two Tour AD shafts in the past and the Tour AD DI Hybrid has the same visual effect as the others.
To put it frankly, the Tour AD DI Hybrid looks very busy. It has a metallic white/orange color scheme but it’s the labeling that really stands out.
The brand name, model name, flex and weight indications are all in different fonts which gives the shaft a rather hectic look.
But I loved the feel of this shaft so much that I was easily able to overlook its rather noisy look.
The Tour AD DI has a progressively stiff bend profile: it’s stiff in the tip, a bit lighter in the midsection and soft in the butt.
This creates a very smooth transition even when you really load up on it. I particularly loved the stiff tip section because it allowed for accuracy that you don’t often get in such an active shaft.
The Tour AD DI Hybrid comes in four weight classes: 75g, 85g, 95g and 105g.
The range of weights makes this shaft a good option for players of all skill levels. After all, who couldn’t benefit from superb smoothness and accuracy akin to much stiffer shafts?
Why is the Tour AD DI So Popular?
The Tour AD DI feels fast even if you don’t swing fast.
It feels fluid through transition and through the ball so you don’t waste a drop of swing speed energy.
And my numbers were the proof. During testing, my smash factor stayed between the 1.3 and 1.4 range.
So I would reckon that part of what makes this shaft so popular is its uncanny ability to transfer swing energy into the ball
How Does the Tour AD DI Hybrid Perform?
I tested the Tour AD DI Hybrid 85g in stiff flex.
The first thing I do when testing any shaft is bend it between both hands. Surprisingly, this gives me a good idea of how it’s going to perform.
The Tour AD DI Hybrid didn’t bend so easily under the force of my hands so I thought, at first, that it would play a bit stiff and boardy.
Well, it might be time to re-think my hand bend practice because it did not indicate the performance of this shaft.
The Tour AD DI Hybrid, even in stiff flex felt remarkably smooth but gave the accuracy of a stiff shaft.
I plugged the Tour AD DI into my 4-hybrid and my spin rates stayed in the 3500 and 400 RPM spin range. This allowed me to thread the needle on narrow fairways and deftly avoid hazards.
The torque was perfect for me but you can get less or more torque just by choosing a higher or lower weight class.
So we know that the Tour AD DI offers great club head speed (smash factor), keeps spin low and allows for straight flight.
Now let’s talk about distance. My average carry with the Tour AD DI was 164.5 yards. The rollout was pronounced due to the low spin so my average total distance was 180.9 yards.
Tour AD DI Hybrid Shaft Specs
What flexes are available what swing speeds do they suit.
Regular is a good flex for 70-80 MPH swingers.
Stiff is good for about 81-95 MPH swingers and extra stiff for 96-105 MPH swingers.
What Weights Are Available? What Swing Speeds Do They Suit?
The 75g and 85g weights should cover players in the 70-90 MPH swing speed range while the 95g and 105g weights would work for players in the 91-105 MPH swing speed range.
Why is it So Good?
The Tour AD DI Hybrid is a good shaft because it combines distance with accuracy.
It feels fluid and pliable which also helps when you need to finagle the shaft in order to dig the ball out of the rough.
Tour AD DI Hybrid First Impressions
At first, I thought the Tour AD DI would be too boardy in stiff flex.
But that was not the case at all. The Tour AD DI ended up being exceptionally fast without sending the ball spinning off-line.
Key Features & Performance
The Tour AD DI features a carbon/graphite design that allows for incredible stability in a lightweight package.
The tip has been stiffened to offer better club head control at impact as well.
Tour AD DI Hybrid Review
I tested this shaft with my 4H but I actually think it would work better in a 3H when you need that extra distance. It offers a nice, mid launch that can easily be worked a bit higher.
Tour AD DI Hybrid Pros & Cons
- Great smash factor
- Smooth transition
- Offers straight flight
- Great distance
- Workable in the rough
- Stopping power isn’t great
- Busy graphics and lettering
Overall Score: 97/100
Check out more reviews here:.
Who Should Buy it?
To be honest, I might have given this shaft a perfect score if not for the lack of stopping power.
This isn’t the shaft you want to plug into your hybrids if you’re attacking a lot of greens with them.
But for the rest of us mortals, the Tour AD DI Hybrid is fantastic for garnering extra distance.
This is more-or-less a point-and-shoot shaft as well so it will help anyone who is struggling with accuracy.
Plus, it comes in a wide variety of weights and flexes so it is viable for many different swing speeds.

Graphite Design Tour AD VF Shaft Review
More in reviews:.
50 Words or Less
The Graphite Design Tour AD VF shaft is a low launch, low spin shaft that wants your most aggressive swings. Excellent dispersion. Stout, one-piece feel.
Introduction
The Graphite Design Tour AD VF shaft is at the center of one of the happiest coincidences in recent golf equipment history. Shortly after its introduction, this red and black shaft made its way into the bag of the golfer who made red and black his signature, Tiger Woods . With the kind of hype that money can’t buy, the VF – which stands for Victory Force – is now available to golfers everywhere. I tested one to see if it can help power your on course victories this season.
While Graphite Design claims that the Tour AD VF wasn’t made with Tiger in mind, it would be hard to imagine a shaft more perfectly designed for the Big Cat. The upper is a deep, rich red that is visually stunning, especially in contrast with the jet black lower portion. It’s a great demonstration of the fact that you don’t need gaudy graphics to be eye-catching if you pick the right colors.
Speaking of graphics, the Graphite Design Tour AD VF sticks to the script of the Tour AD shafts that have come before. The “Graphite Design” branding is split over the color shift. On the “logo down” side, there are simply black and red rings. With the exception of the small “Accuracy & Distance” mark, the lower third of the shaft is free of distractions .
The Graphite Design Tour AD VF sits at the top of the Graphite Design pyramid of stiffness . This is their stiffest profile, rating a Firm+ (butt), Stiff (mid), Very Stiff (tip) from Graphite Design. The shaft nearest in tip stiffness is the Tour AD UB [review HERE ] which rates a Stiff+.
Giving the Tour AD VF a wiggle, I felt just a hint of flex in the mid section. During the swing, that largely went away. This is a shaft for the player that wants a “one-piece” feel without the shaft bending or kicking noticeably. It’s not harsh feeling, but it does demand a strong effort from you.
In the past, I’ve described some super stiff shafts as laughing at your strongest swings. In X-flex (the correct flex for my speed), the Graphite Design Tour AD VF didn’t laugh at me, but I knew I was never going to “win.” It was like running with a friend who is much faster than you but isn’t trying to hurt your feelings . When I bumped up to the TX, I did feel laughed at – I don’t have the speed to make that work.
Finally, I was able to compare the Tour AD VF to the modern classic Tour AD DI [review HERE ]. Both shafts are rated low spin by Graphite Design, but the AD DI feels completely different with a smooth, pronounced kick. This is a great illustration of the fact that not all low spin shafts need to feel the same.
Performance
The calling card of the Graphite Design Tour AD VF is low launch, low spin . Those were the first two things that I noticed when I started my testing. Virtually every drive came out on a piercing trajectory and hit the ground running. If you’re looking to bring down your spin or get more out of drives in a windy environment, the Tour AD VF will deliver. For players that want low spin without the low launch, you might consider the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ [review HERE ].
As I noted earlier, this is a shaft that wants to be swung aggressively, and it encourages that by keeping the dispersion tight . What’s unique about the Tour AD VF – at least for me – is that it’s not strictly “anti-left” in the way that some low/low shafts are. I was able to hit a soft draw or a soft cut equally well. Where it excels is in keeping those shot shapes gentle. Unless I made a really poor swing, I didn’t see the ball curving more than I wanted.
When I went to the Graphite Design Tour AD VF in TX flex, it felt much more “anti-left.” Even with an aggressive swing and a strong intent, I could barely square the face, let alone get the ball to draw. If you’re seeking a hooker-killer, the AD VF can be it, you may just need a stiffer flex.
I also ran the VF against the Tour AD DI which felt world’s different. First, I could dial my swing down to sub-100% effort, which was refreshing after numerous all-out swings. Also, my dispersion shifted left. I don’t think the AD DI is particularly draw-biased, but compared to the AD VF, it felt that way to me.
The Graphite Design Tour AD VF is offered in weights ranging from 40 to 80 grams . At the lightest weight, the Tour AD VF is available in stiff, regular, and senior flexes. Moving up to 50 grams retains those three options and adds the X flex. At 60 grams, there is a stiff/regular, stiff, X, and Tour X. The 70 gram model has just stiff and X. Finally, at 80 grams GD offers X and Tour X.
While I would not typically suggest that recreational players emulate Tiger Woods’s equipment decisions, the Graphite Design Tour AD VF shaft is one that you might consider. If you’re a high spin player who wants to get into more optimal numbers, this is definitely one to try at your next fitting.

What kind of numbers are you looking for when testing out a shaft? I tried the VF found your review very similar to my impressions
I’m not sure what you mean. Are you asking what numbers I think are optimal or what metrics I’m using to evaluate the shaft?
Just curious if there’s a certain criteria you look for in choosing a shaft that works for you
Because of my impact dynamics, I’m able to get a lot of distance out of almost any shaft – I don’t need a shaft to reduce spin for me. Because of that, my focus is on feel and dispersion.
I swing about 105mph but generate high spin. I might try this shaft out. Just deciding between the S and X flex. Do you recommend a certain flex at 105MPH?
Thanks for the detailed review.
My recommendation is always to get fit. With this shaft, I think a stiff could easily stretch to 105 MPH depending on the player’s feel preference.
How does the VF feel in the butt section ? I’m a lefty swinging right handed so I pull hard with my left arm in the transition and I always had issues issue with GD shafts that I find too soft (for my swing) in the handle. Curious also to know how it compares to a Ventus Red or Blue feel wise. Thanks
You can find all my previous Ventus reviews here for comparison: https://pluggedingolf.com/?post_type=post&s=ventus
What, no price? Your articles seem to always have a price point. Must be $1k or something crazy like that.
I rarely put the price in shaft reviews because not many golfers buy them online, they get them from a fitter, and prices vary. Graphite Design tends to be $350-400.

The torque was perfect for me but you can get less or ...
