See Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling in the Sistine Chapel

One of the most important structures of the Catholic faith, the Vatican City’s Sistine Chapel is a must-see on a tour of Italy. Though the chapel walls have witnessed centuries of worship, it’s the renaissance ceiling paintings of Michelangelo that will leave you in awe.

Visit the glamorous Isle of Capri

Enjoy the classic Italian summer in Italy’s picture-perfect Gulf of Naples. Famed for its crystal grottos, dramatic coastlines and endless glamour, our trips to Italy are complete with a day of freedom spent under a striped umbrella, watching sailboats pass by.

Cruise your way through Venice

The charm found in the canals of Venice is nothing short of irresistible. Admire gothic palaces and postcard bridges whilst adrift in a gondola, gaining an understanding of life in a city that floats. Exploring a city by foot will never be the same after a trip to Venice.

Journey to the well-preserved ruins of Pompeii

An unfathomable history lesson is found in the archaeological ruins of Pompeii. Buried and preserved by the ash of a volcano eruption in the year 79, in this Italian town you will discover the progressive life of early Roman times as you walk within the parameters of an open-air time capsule of life on Earth.

Go shopping in Italy's fashion capital Milan

Armani, Gucci, Prada and Versace. These are some of the prestigious fashion brands that call the Italian city of Milan home. In between yearning through boutiques and department stores, stop to sample the city’s delicacies like breaded veal cutlet and ossobuco.

Our top 5 things to do in Italy

It's the moments of quiet stillness that take your breath away on a Trafalgar tour through Italy. Sitting in the calm halls of the Vatican. Floating on the canals of Venice. Standing beside the ruins of Pompeii.

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters are found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo dress Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River will show you the building’s architectural brilliance.

Vatican Museums

A collection of Christian artwork that spans centuries and stirs the soul is found in Rome’s Vatican Museums. From the intricate ceiling by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel to the detailed Pope portraits from the 16th century to today, you will be lost for words once inside this blessed museum complex.

Doge's Palace

Home to the leader of Venice from its opening in 1340, Doge’s Palace summarizes the sparkle of this city. An opulent example of Venetian Gothic architecture and home to numerous historical works, this museum is a must when you visit Venice.

Best museums in Italy

The epicenter of the Catholic faith and the birthplace of art’s most renowned masters. Our guided tours of Italy will take you to the many museums found here, whether in the Sistine Chapel, by the canals of Venice or in the grand galleries of Tuscany.

The authentic carbonara experience will take place in Rome, covered in salty Pecorino Romano cheese. A simple dish inspiring heart-warming meal times, this pasta will connect you with Italy’s rich culinary customs - an impressive evolution from its supposed heritage as a coal-miner’s meal.

Pollo alla Cacciatora

Literally translating to ‘hunter’ in Italian, cacciatore offers an appreciation for Italy’s meals of days gone by. Typically a preparation of rabbit or chicken, it’s the simmering tomato stew that makes this dish so mouthwatering. Satisfy a genuine hunger and consume with hand-ripped bread.

Italy tours are best served with an oversized slice of tiramisu. Cementing this country's obsession with espresso, this cake of layered biscuits soaked in coffee is the perfect after hours pick-me-up before an evening stroll through the charming streets.

Best food in Italy

A date with Italian food will likely start and end with a slice of pizza. But it’s the menu items that we share with you in between that will take your appreciation to new heights; think cacciatore and Carbonara with a slice of tiramisu in between.

What to pack for Italy

People packing for a tour

A classic linen outfit

The Italians are famous for their equal parts glamorous and effortless dress sense. Look the part with a few ensembles featuring classic linens in navy and white.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Italy, you might find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to remember the traditional Italian recipes you learn.

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about Italian history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A small blanket

When exploring the soul-stirring setting of Tuscany, a picnic may call. Come prepared with a small blanket to cover in wine and cheese.

Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes

A classic memoir that brought the romance of Tuscany to the world, there’s no better time to read this book than when venturing through the country yourself.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and reusable toiletry bottles.

Traveling to Italy is an exciting but potentially overwhelming experience for a few different reasons. With such a big country and so much history, culture, and natural wonders to explore, it can be hard to know where to start. For that reason, taking guided and preplanned tours instead of traveling independently can help you focus your trip on specific locations, theming your tour in a specific interest area and providing you with an expert guide who can help answer your questions and keep your interests at the forefront of their recommendations for your activities.

Booking expert guides also provides you with a seamless connection to the local community. If you don’t speak Italian, having a fluent local guide with direct connections to the community you’re traveling through will help you navigate your experience abroad. They can get you better deals, make sure you’re not being scammed by local townspeople, and provide you with the inside scoop on different travel and tourist destinations that you can visit and tour. In the event of an emergency, they can also serve as an advocate and translator for you, helping to connect you to any of the resources you might need.

Booking expert tours, whether these are 10-day Italy trips or daily food tours of Florence , means trusting people who know Italy to recommend the best places for you to visit and the most efficient combination of sightseeing stops for you to enjoy. Your pre-planned tour has been carefully managed down to the last second by an experienced team who knows what they’re doing.

This removes a huge burden off your shoulders, taking the nitty-gritty daily details and removing that responsibility from you so you can spend more time enjoying yourself and relaxing in your surroundings instead of worrying about getting from place to place. By trusting a tour guide from one of Italy’s best tours, you’re committing to a stress-free, exciting vacation that will provide you with a thorough look at the best Italy has to offer.

What a wonderful article to find for someone thinking seriously about visiting such a beautiful country. My wife has always dreamed of visiting Vatican City and Rome. I spent a year of my youth in Naples at 8 years old. Now that I am 75 it is good to see so many options besides hiking, biking, and climbing. There were a lot of options shared in this article. Thank you.

Thank you for your kind words, Bob! I am glad you found this article helpful and that you’re excited to visit Italy with your wife. There truly is no shortage of amazing things to see and do here, so I hope you and your wife come and have a fantastic time.

Ciao Angela, these are amazing tours in Italy, I also live in Italy and I’ve done most of these except Sardinia which I’m looking forward to taking the tours. Thank you for the many options.

Enjoy Sardinia 🙂 If you travel independently, you will definitely need to rent a car…

My first trip to Italy was a group tour. It’s a great way for inexperienced travelers to see many of the top sights of Italy!

True, it might give less freedom of wandering on your own but they take care of all the logistics.

All of these trips sound amazing – it would be a tough choice! I do like the sound of the food one though. Italy is such a beautiful country, I’d happily go back again and again!

Figuring out where to go when you visit Italy is no mean feat. From ancient hilltop towns to modern bustling cities, dramatic mountain landscapes to sweeping coastal scenery, each pocket of Italy delivers something different.

Basilicata and Calabria

Rome , Italy’s capital, is the one city in the country that owes allegiance neither to the north or the south. It’s quite unlike any other city, and in terms of historic sights it outstrips everywhere else by some way.

Piemonte and Lombardy

The northwest regions of Piemonte and Lombardy make up the country’s most cosmopolitan region, and the two main centres, Turin and Milan , are its wealthiest cities. In the north, the presence of the Alps makes skiing and hiking prime activities, while Lombardy’s lakes and mountains are time-honoured tourist territory.

Liguria , the small coastal province to the south, has long been known as the “Italian Riviera” and is accordingly crowded with sun-seekers for much of the summer. Its capital, Genoa , is a vibrant port town with a long seafaring tradition.

The Veneto and Friuli Giulia

The Dolomites stretch into the northeastern regions of the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia , but the main focus here is Venice . This unique city is every bit as beautiful as its reputation suggests.

Emilia-Romagna

Emilia-Romagna ’s coast is popular among Italians, and Rimini is Italy’s brashest (and trendiest) seaside resort. Then there’s the ancient centres of Ravenna , Ferrara , Parma and regional capital, Bologna , one of Italy’s liveliest cities, and traditionally its gastronomic and academic capital.

Central Italy represents perhaps the most commonly perceived image of the country. Tuscany , with its classic rolling countryside and the art-packed towns of Florence , Pisa and Siena , is one of Italy’s most visited regions.

Neighbouring Umbria is similar in all but its tourist numbers, though it gets busier every year, as visitors flock to towns like Perugia and Assisi .

Campania ’s capital, Naples , is a unique, unforgettable city, the spiritual heart of the Italian south, and close to some of Italy’s finest ancient sites in Pompeii and Herculaneum, not to mention the country’s most spectacular stretch of coast around Amalfi.

Puglia , the “heel” of Italy, has underrated pleasures, notably the landscape of its Gargano peninsula, the souk-like qualities of its capital, Bari , and the Baroque glories of Lecce in the far south.

The island of Sicily is a place apart, with a wide mixture of attractions ranging from some of the finest preserved Hellenistic treasures in Europe, to a couple of Italy’s most appealing beach resorts in Taormina and Cefalu, not to mention some gorgeous upland scenery.

Sardinia feels far removed from the mainland, especially in its relatively undiscovered interior, although you may be content just to laze on its beaches, which are among Italy’s best.

Picking landmarks and attractions in Italy everyone should see in a lifetime is a nigh impossible task, but we’ve taken a stab at selecting some of the best places to travel in Italy; sights that will enhance every Italy trip experience.

  • The Colosseum is perhaps Rome’s most awe-inspiring ancient monument, an enormous structure that despite the depredations of nearly two thousand years of earthquakes, fires, riots and wars, remains relatively intact.
  • Venice’s magnificent Piazza San Marco houses the Basilica di San Marco, Italy’s most lavish cathedral.
  • Hemmed in by lush hillsides and dramatic mountains, Lake Como’s captivating landscape is best enjoyed by zigzagging between shores by boat.
  • When in Florence , it’s impossible not to gravitate straight towards the square at its hears, Piazza del Duomo, beckoned by the iconic form of the cathedral’s extraordinary dome.
  • Romain remains at Pompeii and Herculaneum - these two sites, buried by the volcanic debris of Vesuvius in AD 79, afford an unparalleled glimpse into ancient Roman daily life and architecture.
  • The Amalfi coast - this rugged stretch of coastline has to rank as one of Italy’s most breath-taking routes. Secluded coves and picturesque towns punctuate the scenic journey.

History and culture

Rome alone has enough historic attractions to warrant dozens of visits (and that’s no exaggeration). Discover more about the Eternal City’s ravishing ruins and architectural treasures, from the Colosseum and the Roman Forum , to the Spanish Steps and the Vatican .

Florence is an exquisite city of exquisite art, the jewel in its elegant crown Italy’s finest art gallery, the Uffizi, home to Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and Caravaggio’s “Medusa”, to name but a few of its masterworks. Though meandering Venice’s winding alleys and canals feels like you’re exploring a museum (such is the city’s beauty and uniquely curated vibe), the Accademia museum is an absolute must-visit for art-lovers.

Water-sports

The extensive Italian coast offers plenty of opportunities for sailing and windsurfing. Scuba diving is popular in Sicily and off most of the smaller islands. Water-sports aren’t just restricted to the coast - they can be found in places such as lakes Como and Garda in the north, and Trasimeno and Bolsena further south towards Rome, while river canoeing, canyoning and rafting are popular in the mountain areas of the north of the country. Discover more about sports and outdoor pursuits - our Italy guide to all things active.

Of course, Italy’s coast isn’t all about high energy pursuits. Its beaches are stunning places to soak up the sun; people watch and pose; eat, drink and generally be very merry. Discover the best beaches in Italy , spanning secluded coves, lively seafronts, and dramatic cliff-backed harbours.

Skiing and snowboarding

With the Alps on the doorstep, it’s easy to spend a weekend skiing or snowboarding from Milan, Turin or Venice. Some of the most popular ski resorts are Sestriere and Bardonecchia in Piemonte, and Val di Fassa in the stunning Dolomite mountains. Find out about the best winter resorts for skiing .

Hiking and biking

All these mountain resorts are equally ideal as bases for summer hiking and climbing. The dramatic, spiky landscape of the Dolomites , for example, is perfect hiking country, with its trails often subject to snow, ice and scorching sun in the same day - this is Italy travel at its most epic. For less strenuous treks, the rolling hills of Tuscany and Umbria make perfect walking and mountain-bike country - consider booking a tour in the company of an Italy travel guide who has local hiking or biking know-how.

Italy is a truly year-round destination, so the answer to the question “what’s the best month to go to Italy?” will depend on what you want from your Italy travel experience.

Generally speaking, though, the best time to travel to Italy is spring ( April , May and June ) or autumn ( September and October ). emperatures are warm and you’ll skirt the stifling heat of the summer months - top Italy travel advice if you want to avoid the crowds, too.

Visiting Italy in November , December , January , February and March is doable, but keep in mind that it can be cold. Especially in the north.

Find out more about the best time to visit Italy .

The best way to travel to Italy is to fly. Regular direct flights serve most of Italy from the UK, and you can fly direct from various cities in the US to Rome and Milan. Alternatively, if you travel to Italy by train, you’ll limit your carbon footprint and get to see incredible scenery too. An Interrail (European residents) or Eurail pass (non-European residents) is good value if you plan to make stops en route.

Read on for the best ways to get to Italy .

If you’re wondering how to travel around Italy, the extensive rail system is inexpensive, pretty reliable and quick, apart from regional trains, which tend to be slow and don’t necessarily extend to everywhere you might want to go, though regional buses cover the corners the trains don’t reach. For trips to the islands, you can hop on a ferry or hydrofoil, and the northern lakes region operates frequent ferries outside the winter months.

When you visit Italy, an immeasurable variety of accommodation awaits - boutique hotels, youth hostels, self-catering villas, family-run B&Bs, rural farmhouses, mountain monasteries. While rarely particularly cheap, standards are reliable and accommodation is well regulated. Bear in mind, though, that while accommodation is plentiful, you’ll need to book ahead to bag your ideal bunk down spot in popular resorts and major cities.

One of the joys of travel to Italy is sampling the variety of quality food and drink. Italian cuisine is region specific - the northwest brings a French influence, with its rich butter and cream sauces, while Umbria specialises in salamis, hams, and black truffles, and the southern diet features Mediterranean vegetables. Naples is considered to be the home of the humble pizza, all along the coast seafood dominates, and pasta is prevalent pretty much everywhere. When it comes to drink, Italians take their coffee seriously, and Italian wine is world-renowned, with Tuscany producing classic Chianti, and Veneto’s Prosecco an effervescent delight.

If you travel to Italy, chances are you’ll come across a festival of one kind or another. The Italians love a party, and there are thousands of festivals throughout the year. Religious processions are widespread, Good Friday being particularly well celebrated, and carnival (the big party before the sobriety of Lent). Then there are traditional events, such as the Palio horse race in Siena , food festivals, often celebrating regional cuisine, as well as arts festivals, often taking place against a backdrop of Roman or medieval architecture.

The resort area of Rimini is arguably the clubbing capital of Italy, mainly concentrated on the seafront itself, and in the fashionable enclave of Misano Monte (15km south of Rimini and about 5km inland). Also home to legendary nightclubs, cosmopolitan fashion powerhouse Milan does things a little differently. Milanos like to start their evenings early, with an extended “Happy Hour” that begins around six with an aperitivo - a pre-dinner drink that typically lasts until 9pm.

Though not short of night clubs, Roman nightlife is more focussed on al fresco food-based activities. Bustling, bohemian Trastevere comes up trumps for hearty homecooked food and, while Naples lays claim to inventing it, Roman pizza is something to write home about.

The saying goes that Rome wasn’t built in a day, so you shouldn’t expect to see more than a fraction of the city’s attractions in a short visit. That said, if you’re looking for ideas for a few days in Italy, a (preferably long) weekend in Rome will deliver in magnificent style. The same goes for city breaks in Venice, Florence and Milan, and lesser-visited Bologna and Genoa.

As for ideas for a week (or more) in Italy, you might consider touring the Italian Lakes , or soaking up southern Italy , taking in Naples, Pompeii, Vesuvius, the island of Capri , and Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. Alternatively, exploring the island of Sicily makes for an idyllic longer break.

  • Dining do’s and don’ts - always wish your table mates “Buon appetito!” before eating, never start to eat until everyone is seated, and always serve others before yourself.
  • Be mindful that tucking into takeaway treats on the move isn’t always welcome (or legal). Florence, for example, has banned eating on the streets around All’ Antico Vinaio, on account of the mess incurred by the popularity of the areas’s takeaway eateries.
  • Be respectful (quiet, and observe any rules around photography) when visiting churches and other religious sites.
  • Say “Permesso” when you need to pass someone on the street, as you’d say “excuse me” in English.

  • Electricity - the supply is 220V, though anything requiring 240V will work, and plugs either have two or three round pins.
  • Italy’s currency is the euro (Italians pronounce it “eh-uro”).
  • Banks give the best exchange rate. Banking hours are normally Monday to Friday mornings from 8.30am until 1.30pm, and for an hour in the afternoon (usually 2.30–4pm).
  • Most towns and villages have at least one ATM.
  • Opening hours - most shops and businesses open Monday to Saturday from 8am until 1pm, and from about 4pm until 7pm, with additional closures on Saturday afternoons, though an increasing number remain open all day. Traditionally, everything except bars and restaurants closes on Sunday, though in large cities and tourist areas, Sunday shopping is more common.

In general, you’ll find the south of Italy less expensive than the north. As a broad guide, expect to pay most in Venice, Milan, Florence and Bologna, less in Rome, while in Naples and Sicily prices drop quite a lot. As an indication, you should be able to survive on a budget of about €50–60 per day if you stay in a hostel, have lunchtime snacks and a cheap evening meal. If you stay in a mid-range hotel and eat out twice a day, you’ll spend closer to €130–140 per day. Transport and food are relatively inexpensive, and room rates are in line with much of the rest of Europe, but bear in mind that in July and August, when Italians take their holidays, hotel prices can escalate.

  • Comfortable shoes - yes, even if you’re strutting around fashionable Milan. Exploring Italy on foot is fabulous fun, so you won’t want to be hindered by inappropriate footwear.
  • That said, Italians are known for their style, so even if you’re setting off for a beach or adventure holiday, you’ll want to pack something smart for the evenings.
  • Travelling from outside mainland Europe? Bring multi-plug adapter.
  • While English is widely spoken, pack an Italian phrasebook . Attempting to speak little lingo is polite, plus it could come in handy in remote rural regions.
  • Italian summers are hot, hot, hot - don’t forget the sunscreen.

Italy is relatively safe for visitors, though you can reduce the chance of petty theft by taking sensible precautions - don’t flash anything valuable, and make sure bags can’t be snatched. You’re most at risk in busy areas, where pickpockets and scippatori or “snatchers” on scooters are most likely to operate.

  • Don’t sit down for a coffee if you’re going to down it in one - the cost of a coffee drunk at a table can be double that of drinking it at the counter.
  • Don’t ask for a cappuccino as lunchtime approaches - in Italy, the frothy stuff is only supped with breakfast.
  • Common sense this one, but steer clear of restaurants that try to usher folks inside. Italy has an abundance of excellent eateries - you don’t need to pay over the odds at joints that hustle for business.
  • Avoid depending on debit and credit cards. Lots of gelateria, street food vendors and trinket stalls only take cash - you wouldn’t want to miss out on that ice cream of a lifetime by being beholden to cards.

In Italy, sip confidently from the tap – the water is safe and refreshing to drink! Bring a reusable bottle to top up at one of the many fountains, and stay hydrated while reducing plastic waste.

2 Weeks in Italy also makes the perfect time for a road trip, allowing you to see much more of this diverse Mediterranean country.

Best Time to Visit Italy

Whether you’re skiing in the Dolomites, enjoying a glass of wine in Siena, or touring ancient Roman ruins, the weather adds its own magic to your Italy holiday.

High Season: Italy’s weather is different throughout the country and the year. Summers (June to August) are the perfect time for beach bumming in coastal areas like the Amalfi Coast and Sicily. This is, however, also peak travel season, so prepare for crowds.

Shoulder Seasons: The shoulder seasons of spring and fall are the best time to visit Italy. During this time, the weather is pleasant, and landscapes burst in color. Florence and Tuscany are particularly stunning during this time, with milder temperatures perfect for exploring historical sights and vineyards.

Low season: Winter makes a great time to visit the north (especially the Italian Alps) if you’re into snow sports. Venice , Milan, and Rome can be a bit chilly but are just as enchanting and will have fewer tourists. Down south on the coast, winters are milder, making them also a great off-season escape.

Coastlines and Beaches

Once you’ve absorbed all the Italian history and art that there is to offer, head to the idyllic Italian shores. The country boasts a coastline that’s as diverse as it’s stunning, offering a beach experience for every traveler. Best of all, the warm Mediterranean climate in Italy and the hot sun that shines on a deep blue sea make it the perfect summer destination.

Discover areas such as the Cinque Terre , where layers of colored houses sink into the olive groves and cliffs, or cool off in the cool waters in front of Puglia’s unique coast dotted with hidden grottoes.

Alternatively, leave the mainland, and head to the island of Sardinia, where white sandy shores line with azure blue waters. For history lovers, Sicily offers a blend of beautiful beaches and ancient ruins like the impressive Valley of the Temples.

Italy’s beaches are more than just a place to soak up the sun – try different watersports, explore cute coastal towns, and dive into the different gelato flavors.

Food, Culture, and Religion in Italy

Italy is known as a cultural hub where food, culture, and religion come together and create a beautiful blend of traditions.

Food: Italian cuisine is renowned globally, but each region has its own flavors and culinary delights. Lombardy in the north is famous for its creamy risotto, while Sicily in the south boasts dishes like pasta alla norma, and Naples is the birthplace of pizza.

Culture: Everywhere you go in Italy feels as if you’re walking in a living museum adorned with ancient ruins like the Colosseum in Rome or the remarkably preserved city of Pompeii. Use our Italy travel guides to explore timeless art in Florence or slowly drift down the canals in Venice, taking in all the enchanting architecture.

Religion: Religion also holds a significant place in Italy’s culture, with the majority being Roman Catholic. Vatican City, nestled in the heart of Rome, stands as the epicenter of the Catholic Church. Pilgrims used to flock to sites like Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis, for spiritual journeys, and there are many religious festivals all throughout the country, showing Italy’s rich cultural heritage.

Why You Should Travel to Italy

With its romantic settings, delicious cuisine, cultural heritage, history, and art, it’s easy to see why people from all over the world travel in Italy. Visitors can tread the paths of the ancient Romans and stroll through century-old streets, all while savoring fresh seafood and pasta. Later, enjoy your food coma, while relaxing along the coast or waterfront in stunning locations like Lake Como .

Tip: Some of the best things to do in Italy lie more off the beaten path, like the lush region of Umbria. Discover cute towns and water villages tucked between rolling hills covered in vineyards. Or, head into its Tuscan neighbor and explore the Elsa Trail and Diborrato Waterfall .

Safety and Travel Advice in Italy

Although Italy is a safe destination to travel to, it’s always good to be up-to-date about safety measures and tips for traveling to the country.

Natural disasters: Though they rarely happen, Italy does see minor earthquakes and sometimes experiences heavy rainfall (winter). Stay informed by registering with your embassy to receive emergency updates on your trip. If you plan on doing any winter sports, always take advice on local weather and avalanche conditions before you travel to Italy.

Crime and safety in Italy : Crime levels are generally low, but in crowded areas, like the city centers in Rome and Milan, petty crime (pickpocketing) does happen. Leave valuables at home and carry your bag on the front if possible. Be particularly careful with your belongings on trains to and from the airport, as well as left unattended on the beaches.

Learn more about travel safety

Traffic: Depending on where you travel to and the time of your visit, there can be quite some traffic in Italy. If you’re driving a rental car in Italy, always watch for traffic signs and stick to the rules (even when locals don’t). In Italy, it’s also important to know which part of the city is a ZTL (zona traffico limitato), as this is a permit-only zone.

Car theft: Though rare, car theft does happen from rental cars, especially in Southern Italy. Because of this, always be mindful of where you park, and don’t leave anything on display inside. Try to remove all valuables and luggage if you can.

Travel Insurance: One of the things we always recommend for your Italy holiday is purchasing travel insurance. Whether it’s lost luggage or an accident – travel insurance gives you more peace of mind. Check out these best travel insurances .

Private Tour of Sicily: Highlights

We had a fantastic private tour with Sicily Activities in August 2021. All the logistics were handled very well, from the airport/hotel transfers to the daily tour meet-ups. The company successfully combined elements of their standard tour and our customized itinerary in a seamless fashion. All of the selected hotels were very nice and convenient to city centers and restaurants. The guides were all knowledgeable, friendly and fluent in English. (special mentions for our driver/guides Valerio and Rosario.). All tour details were well communicated, and any questions or concerns we had were addressed in a timely fashion. While we were somewhat apprehensive about traveling abroad during Covid (we are from NJ, USA), we were able to relax and enjoy our vacation thanks to Massimo, Alex and the rest of Sicily Activities taking care of all the details and answering our questions and concerns along the way. We highly recommend this company, especially for families or small groups who are interested in a private tour of Sicily. We would certainly use them again for a future visit.

Taste of Salento-Authentic Culinary Experience

We have recently returned from Discover Matera and Taste of Salento tour arranged by Soleto Travel. Omar of Soleto Travel has been most helpful and responsive to our pre tour and on tour queries. In one instance he arranged invaluable medical assistance following an accident to my partner. The tour was excellent and met expectations. Be prepared to climb a lot of steps in Matera. In particular our hosts at Tenuta Linazza (masseria) were most welcolming and the food was genuine Italian with a wide variety of dishes available - ranging from delicious desserts to great pasta and seafoood dishes accompanied by hgh quality Puglia wines. Emiliio is a chef extraordinaire as well as being a most professional and insightful guide into Puglia customs and culture. His family members Clara, Michel and Antonio also acted as tour guides and shared these same attributes. The tour flexibility offered is a plus in satisfying the consensus wishes of touring participants. Accomodation at the farm cannot be faulted - spacious and clean with good facilities. There is the added bonus of Pongo the family dog who occasionally walks with you to the local coffee outlet to meet the Castiglione locals.

Discover Matera and Taste of Salento Tour

This was an outstanding experience from start to finish. I would highly recommend it. With Emilio and Clara and their family in Salento, I got to experience authentic Italian life as well as sightseeing some incredible towns. I felt like I was staying with good friends who had so much knowledge and desire to showcase the typical foods from the region. Emilio runs a restaurant at the olive oil farm and each meal was delicious. Understanding the production of olive oil was fascinating. And they give flexibility on the time you wish to spend at each place. Each day was different and they change the schedule to suit the weather so you get the best out of the places you visit. My time in Matera was just as outstanding. Mr Cosimo, my guide was very kind and shared so much history of the town with me. He looked after me like a good friend. It was amazing. He gave me great suggestions about restaurants for my free time. The hotel was stunning and had a Roman bath where I could relax. Omar from Soleto Travel was always very helpful in answering any questions and prompt. I am so happy I found this tour.

Paths of the Amalfi Coast Tour

Paths of the Amalfi Coast

The location on the Amalfi Coast is fabulous, with challenging but rewarding walks, and it was great to have a single base for the whole week. I was doing self-guided as a solo. There was no visual map, only written instructions, which at times were difficult to follow. I received cursory attention from hotel staff including the head waiter who was apparently my key contact: one of the other waiters was more thoughtful. When I did ask about departing bus timetables which weren’t clear, staff were very off hand - I had to persist to find out relevant information. The room was great - I had a jacuzzi bath. Unfortunately apart from the first and last nights, meals were far below what the information indicated, and even more basic than what I’d cook at home, and I’m not a fancy cook: for example, a bowl of cos lettuce for 4 of 7 nights with a few julienned carrots on one night and no dressing does not rate as a salad. Because I was self guided and solo I was consistently seated alone for dinner. The wifi in the bedroom was hopeless - repeatedly needing to sign in within minutes - but great in the dining area. I made the most of the opportunity and location, but overall, and in comparison to some of my other experiences throughout Europe, not value for money and I’d be reluctant to recommend to others.

Private Italy Tour Reviews

TourRadar was excellent. The tours they scheduled were well-run by knowledgeable and amiable guides. Of course, the Italy locations were superb. The office staff kept in constant contact, but unobtrusive. And when I changed plans on the fly, the staff was responsive and thorough. I definitely cannot wait to book my next adventure with TourRadar!
Loved Sicily and we were well looked after by Sicily Activities. I would recommend them without hesitation. Paul Roberts - New Zealand.

Campania Tour Guide - Gabriella P.

Gabriella P.

Ciao everyone, i started as tour guide 6 years ago, almost out of fun, out of curiosity. contact with people has always been important for me and being born in naples, that came very simple, almost mandatory. my city is full of history and traditions, of delicious things like pizza and "coffee suspended", because no one in naples has to feel so poor that can not afford a coffee. a city suspended between the paradise of the sea and the flames of vesuvius, one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world but from which you can enjoy one of the most striking views of the gulf of naples. and this volcano has given rise to what is still one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, pompeii. rich is the history as are the landscapes, as those breathtaking of the amalfi coast. the most beautiful part is to recognize the wonder in the eyes of the visit for the first time. the same wonder that i had felt and that i still feel today. this is the goal: give you the best experience showing all the beauties of this area. all my tours can be customized according to your requests, for example respecting the arrival/departure time of cruise ship, train or plane. what are you waiting for i'm waiting for you                                                                                                                                  .

Venice for Joe

“ Great guide, good perspective, very accommodating and mindful of how to get the most of the day ”

David had a great perspective on the historical, factual, and political landscape of Venice. He was very accommodating and eager to please. Showed us the sights - toured Torcello, Burano and Murano. His boat wasn’t the newest or the fastest but it got the job done for our group of two and made for a good adventure. We toured for about 6 hours or so and fit a lot into our day. I could have shopped for longer in Murano, but I probably saved myself some money by not staying longer to shop! If you want more than an hour and a half in Murano, book him for more time.

“ Roberta is an amazing tour guide! ”

I booked two tours with Roberta and I am so glad I did because she is one of the most amazing tour guides out there!! The two tours were definitely the highlights of our vacation and we could not have learned everything we did without her. Not only is she very knowledgeable about Italian history but she also went above and beyond connecting with people from the two small towns outside of Naples, where my family was originally from, as these are not her normal tour areas. She spent time researching and even contacted people who knew my family members years ago giving the tours such a personal touch. I am beyond grateful Roberta had the time to take our family around and share Italy's history with us. You can tell she has an incredible passion for what she does and I would recommend anyone who is looking for a tour guide to choose Roberta! Thank you!!!

Elizabeth V.

Thank you so much Elizabeth! It has been a lovely time spent with you and your family!

“ Danny - A++++ guide in Brindisi ”

I had the pleasure of being guided through Brindisi by a real "pro"! Danny is a guide not only knowledgeable about his home town's history, culture, architecture and local customs but he has the gift to bring these facts about Brindisi to life by mixing interesting information with unusual anecdotes. His passion for Puglia is evident and I would highly recommend a tour with him. Thanks Danny, I enjoyed every minute of our detailed walk!

The Insider’s Guide to Portofino

Portofino’s charming piazza, high-end shopping and dining, and natural splendor result in a memorable Italian vacation spot that caters to travelers who want to unwind and enjoy the finer things in life.

tour guide of italy

The Italian Riviera is dotted with beautiful seaside towns, but perhaps none as lovely as Portofino. The harbor locale, known for its colorful pastel buildings, Old World allure and famous visitors, is a popular summer destination for good reason. Its charming piazza, high-end shopping and dining, and natural splendor result in a memorable vacation spot that caters to travelers who want to unwind and enjoy the finer things in life. Like so many Italian Riviera locations , Portofino isn’t the easiest place to get to, but it’s accessible from the airports in Genoa and Milan , and the Santa Margherita Ligure–Portofino train station is just about three miles from the main town.

Located on the Ligurian Sea, Portofino is adjacent to several other Mediterranean coastal towns, including Paraggi, Rapallo and Santa Margherita Ligure. Visitors can also combine a getaway to Portofino with a day trip exploration of Cinque Terre, found to the south, or to Lake Como , a short drive north. Ferries and private boats connect many of the local destinations during the summer months, and the area welcomes hikers, golfers and cyclists. Although Portofino itself is small, travelers can find a lot to see and eat in the fishing town and in the surrounding Ligurian coast region, including kayaking, wine tasting and shopping. Whether you want to relax on a private beach, explore the rugged coastline or indulge in the best Italian food , here is your complete travel guide to Portofino.

Belmond’s opulent Splendido Mare is one of Portofino’s top hotels, a haven for jet-setters and Hollywood A-listers. Located in the heart of town, it features only 14 rooms and suites, giving it an intimate, guest house vibe and ensuring a high level of service. It’s a sister property to the larger Belmond Hotel Splendido, located in the Portofino hills, and guests at both hotels have access to the Dior spa, saltwater swimming pool and restaurants. Splendido Mare’s eatery, DaV Mare, showcases Italian cuisine in a casual fine dining setting alongside the harbor. Guests can also take advantage of the free shuttle between the hotel and Bagni Fiore beach in nearby Paraggi. Book the top-floor Ava Gardner Suite for the best amenities and beautiful views of Portofino.

  • Via Aurelia Orientale, 369, 16035 Rapallo GE, Italy

Many of the hotels right in Portofino are small and lack high-end offerings, but the adjacent town of Rapallo welcomes many luxury travelers to the historic Grand Hotel Bristol Resort and Spa. The grand dame hotel, home to the expansive Erre Spa, embraces holiday indulgence with an outdoor pool and the private Marina di Bardi Beach Club, which makes its debut this May. The rooms and suites are contemporary, with memorable views of the sea and coast (opt for a Panoramic Suite for the best scenery), and guests can expect personable, discerning service. There are several restaurants and bars, including poolside pizzeria the Flamingo and rooftop fine dining spot Le Cupole.

  • Via Milite Ignoto, 30, 16038 Santa Margherita Ligure GE, Italy

Italian brand Eight Hotels has a centrally-situated property in Portofino, a short walk from the main piazza. It’s chic and intimate, with rooms and suites that are more about comfort than they are about views. The vibe is relaxed, although guests can expect amenities like butler service, an outdoor Jacuzzi, and its own Porsche electric charging station. The hotel has a charming sister property in Paraggi (this one has the best views) and guests of both can enjoy the private beach club in Paraggi Bay.

  • Via del Fondaco, 11, 16034 Portofino GE, Italy

Located in nearby Santa Margherita Ligure, Grand Hotel Miramare is a good option for travelers who want the full resort experience without the crowds of Portofino. The seaside hotel has 72 modern rooms and suites, with historic flourishes and the option for a sea view. There’s a saltwater pool, an expansive garden, a private beach and the e’Spa’ce spa. Guests can dine at several on-site restaurants, from fine dining to poolside, and the chic Bar Le Colonne is perfect for an aperitif. Intrepid visitors can walk to Portofino alongside the coast in less than an hour, although there are also direct buses or taxis.

Portofino’s scenic main square is the hub of the action. It connects to the town’s vibrant harbor, and many of the best restaurants and cafes offer outdoor seating with water views. It’s perfect for an aperitif or a coffee, or to take advantage of the many shopping options. Portofino is known for its designer boutiques, from Dolce & Gabbana and Dior to Louis Vuitton and Brunello Cucinelli, and there are also several independent brands with stores that sell high-end goods, like cashmere and jewelry. Visitors and locals tend to gather in the piazza when the sun comes out (which is often), and it’s a great place to sit and watch the comings and goings. Don’t forget to stop for a scoop of gelato at one of the local gelaterias.

  • Via Paraggi a mare, 1, 16038 Paraggi GE, Italy

Because Portofino is set on a harbor, the town itself doesn’t have a good beach. But Paraggi, which is a quick walk or taxi ride away, boasts a row of private beach clubs that embrace luxury and exclusivity, where you can book loungers and umbrellas. Bagni Fiore, owned by Belmond, has previously hosted Dior pop-ups, and has been visited by Brigitte Bardot and Elizabeth Taylor over its storied life. It’s a tough invite if you’re not staying at one of Belmond’s nearby hotels, but worth it if you can swing it. There are also several beautiful public beaches in Santa Margherita Ligure.

  • Via S. Fruttuoso, 13, 16032 Camogli GE, Italy

Hop a boat from Portofino to the historic Abbey of San Fruttuoso, found in a secluded bay in the between Camogli and Portofino. It sits above a small beach, which is popular with visitors and locals alike during the summer months, and travelers can explore the Romanesque abbey’s rooms for a low ticket price. Guided tours are available for those who want the full experience, and the abbey, which is home to the tombs of members of Genoese Doria family, owns a traditional Ligurian house that can be rented for up to four people. Those who prefer getting in some steps can also hike between Portofino and San Fruttuoso Bay, which takes about two and a half hours. Otherwise, daily ferries and private boats run from Recco, Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo, Sestri Levante, Lavagna, Chiavari and Genoa.

  • Località Mulino del Gassetta, 16034 Portofino, Italy

La Portofinese is an eco-farm nestled high on the coastline above Portofino in the natural park. It’s home to bees, vineyards and a butterfly garden, and it welcomes visitors for picnics, cooking classes and wine tastings. The tours and experiences are private with advance reservations, and it’s a great way to taste the local wares without restaurant crowds. The company also helms Coppelli’s Osteria, a restaurant serving dishes with ingredients from the local area, and Portofino’s Lighthouse, which serves aperitivo and snacks.

  • Via Duca degli Abruzzi, 62, 16034 Portofino GE, Italy

Head into nature with Outdoor Portofino, a tour company that hosts kayaking, snorkeling, paddleboarding and hiking excursions. It’s a great way to be active and see the Portofino coast from the water, and visitors can even book sunset kayak and wine tasting tours for something extra special. If you prefer to go alone, Outdoor Portofino rents their kayaks, snorkeling equipment and paddleboard, which can be booked in advance.

Where to Eat and Drink

  • Calata Marconi, 7, 16034 Portofino GE, Italy

The seafood is impressively fresh at Da I Gemelli, a beloved, family-owned restaurant found directly on Portofino’s scenic harbor. Grab an outdoor table to immerse yourself in the buzzy area and to taste Italian dishes like spaghetti ai frutti di mare and pesce alla Genovese, which showcase local catch. The family owns a second restaurant across the piazza, Da I Gemelli al Molo, as well as Da I Gemelli Milano in Milan. Reservations can be made in advance and are recommended during the high season.

  • Via Paraggi a mare, 1, 16038 Santa Margherita Ligure GE, Italy

Part of Bagni Fiore, Langosteria offers unparalleled views in an exclusive setting. Both the outdoor and indoor tables embrace the beachside locale and the menu focuses on fresh fish and seafood, from oysters to its signature scampi pasta. It’s a place to see and be seen, but the food is on point and the bar offerings include a discerning selection of Italian wines. A reservation is essential, especially during busier holiday periods, and it’s worth dining early to enjoy the Paraggi inlet with fewer people.

  • Molo Umberto I, 9, 16034 Portofino GE, Italy

Found in the heart of Portofino, Cracco is led by chef Carlo Cracco , who embraces regional tradition with sophisticated flair. The restaurant opened in 2021 and has since attracted guests with its welcoming atmosphere and views of the yachts in the harbor. The wine cellar is equally impressive, boasting more than 800 labels from around the world. Visitors can also indulge in craft cocktails or bubbles on the restaurant’s scenic terrace. Reservations are available online and highly recommended.

  • Piazza Martiri dell'Olivetta, 1, 16034 Portofino GE, Italy

DaV Mare, part of Belmond Splendido Mare, is helmed by chef Davide Galbiati , who combines inspiration from Lombardian and Ligurian cuisine to create contemporary, seasonal dishes. The food pairs with Ligurian wines and local seafood, particularly shellfish, is on display throughout the menu. The flavors are augmented by the trattoria di pesce’s charming terrace setting, which overlooks Portofino Piazzetta. Reserve a table in advance if you’re not staying at the hotel.

  • Piazza Martiri dell'Olivetta, 5, 16034 Portofino GE, Italy

Celebrity-favorite Ristorante Puny sits directly in the center of Portofino’s main piazzetta, offering patio seating with unparalleled views. It’s the town’s most famous eatery, but the food is actually worthwhile. The family-owned spot is known for its pasta and its seafood (the pappardelle al Portofino, featuring a tomato and pesto sauce, is the must-order dish) and its notable guests, who have included everyone from the Kardashians and Jennifer Lopez to Magic Johnson and Jeff Bezos . Reservations can only be made over the phone, so have your concierge give them a call.

How to Get Around Rome

Getting around the cobbled-stoned streets of Rome is not hard. I’ve walked, biked, and bused throughout Rome and loved it! All are great ways to get around and the method you choose depends on how much time you have and your personal preference.

I recommend the  Big Bus Tour  or a Golf Cart Tour in Rome if you are short on time or if you booked your travel in the dead heat of summer (which can be intensely hot).

With these tours, you’ll see all the top Rome attractions with audio commentary in your language of choice. If you choose an open top tour bus, the added benefit is free wi-fi and for 3 extra euros, you can use your ticket for two days (it is worth it).

When it comes to seeing Rome, walking can not be avoided especially when getting to an attraction that require climbing hilly pathways or navigating ancient streets. In my opinion, being on foot is one of the best ways to travel in Rome.

Exploring the narrow streets can lead you to the most marvelous pasta, the creamiest gelato, or the most perfect pasta! I highly recommend visiting the Trastevere neighborhood for  Italian street food .

Public Transportation

This is the best option for getting to a part of town that is more than 20 minutes on foot, especially if visiting a museum or park. Save your energy and use public transportation for less than 2 euros. You can purchase them at the tobacconist store.

You will need to validate your ticket upon boarding the bus (it’s an honor system). Getting caught with an un-validated ticket can result in a fine. You should also use a really good map of Rome.

Bike or Vespa

Peddling around the city on your own time feels so liberating. Bike rental is very affordable and is an enjoyable way to experience the outdoors, get some exercise to make up for all the  Italian breakfasts  that you eat, and explore Rome.

You can find rentals for as little as 13 euros for 24 hours, complete with lock, for a standard bike. The price for e-bikes is higher.

Getting around on a two-passenger scooter is loads of fun!  Rent a Vespa to skirt traffic or explore outside the city. They can be rented by the hour or day. This will make your trip to Rome memorable as you travel in true Italian style!

How to Get to Central Rome from FCO Airport

There are several options to get from Leonardo da Vinci International Airport to the center of the city. I found the train to be the quickest and most affordable especially if you’ve had a long day of travel and want to get to Termini station.

The most economical way to get from the airport to the city center is via a shuttle bus service from the airport. You can travel conveniently between Rome’s city center and the airport and take pleasure in a stress-free arrival or departure from the city.

The ride takes about 50 minutes and departures run from the airport every 30 to 40 minutes so you have time to collect your luggage. Shuttles stop in Terminal 3’s arrivals section. Look for the respective service at the arrival platform.

Terravision offers a shuttle service for less than 8 euros it’s quite popular. The buses are air-conditioned and there is no cost to bring your luggage aboard. It goes directly to Termini station with no extra stops.

Another option is the public transportation system, which costs about 6 euros. The bus stops multiple times in the city center, including one close to the Vatican and one at Termini Station, throughout the 45- to 1-hour one-way trip.

Buses halt in Terminal 3’s arrivals section, at number 14. You can purchase tickets at the airport desk or online.

A taxi is quite expensive. It will set you back almost 50 euros and the ride takes just as long as a shuttle service (about 50 minutes). You can find the taxis at the arrival level of Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.

The Leonardo Express train is less than 20 euros and runs every 15 minutes during peak periods. It is operated by Trenitalia and the ride takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

If you wait to collect your luggage, and then make your way to the window or kiosk to purchase your ticket, note that many others will be doing the same. Hate long lines? You can purchase tickets in advance and be ready for validation after boarding the train.

I can’t recommend a car rental unless you plan a day trip and need a set of wheels. Rome is completely walkable. Not to mention, even Italians know that finding a parking space can be a hassle.

Tips for Visiting Rome

I adore visiting Italy. And no trip would be complete without seeing some of the most iconic and historic spots in the Eternal City.

Don’t make the mistake (that I made on my first trip) and skip these incredible spots! Fortunately, I was able to see them on return visits!

Whether you are visiting the Vatican for the first time or returning because you tossed a coin into the Trevi fountain, these Rome travel tips will come in handy to make your stay enjoyable.

  • Be prepared! Read these tips on the essentials for an international flight .

Milan is a smart, safe, and stylish destination for solo female travel in Italy.

Based on post-pandemic tourism data compiled by Italy’s tourist board , planning vacations to the the beloved Mediterranean country has never been more popular. While cities like Rome and Venice will always remain bucket list destinations, what should you do if you’re a solo female traveler looking for an Italian city that’s less crowded, safe, and just as beguiling?

Consider Milan. Italy's second-largest city has long been dismissed as the country’s design and fashion capital, but in reality, there’s far more to Milan’s appeal than Salone del Mobile and Miuccia Prada. From historic attractions to fantastic food, the city is an underrated gem. Plus, getting around is a breeze thanks to inexpensive public transportation, including Milano Centrale—which has several hundred domestic trains departing daily so you can explore even more of Italy.

Here, a handy guide on how to plan a safe and unforgettable solo female trip to Milan.

Where to Stay

Hotel NH Collection Milano CityLife pays homage to the church it occupies, 1934's Chiesa del Cristo ... [+] Re.

Anchored by three architectural masterpieces from Zaha Hadid Architects, Daniel Libeskind, and Arata Isozaki, CityLife is a mixed-use development that’s home to stylish shops, enticing restaurants, and as of 2022, one of Milan’s buzziest new hotels, Hotel NH Collection Milano CityLife . Spread across two structures including Chiesa del Cristo Re, a 1934 neoclassical-style church, the 185-key hotel offers a stay that’s removed enough from Milan’s city center to ensure peace and quiet, but close enough to access by foot.

Hotel NH Collection Milano CityLife's exterior lounge and reception area

The gleaming all-white structure’s original facade, arches, and soaring columns were carefully restored to nod to Chiesa del Cristo Re’s previous life. The design ethos flows indoors to the main lobby, where seven-meter-high bronze elements resembling organ pipes make the mundane act of checking in a grand one.

Religion, however, isn’t the only source of inspiration for Hotel NH Collection Milano CityLife. The city’s fashion legacy is woven into the property’s signature restaurant and lounge Tailors. Lovely for an aperitivo—which in true Italian style arrive with salty nibbles like Taralli and potato chips—a sophisticated dinner of housemade duck ragu paccheri drizzled with Vacche Rosse Parmigiano Reggiano bechamel, or the daily breakfast spread, Tailors celebrates craftsmanship in the kitchen. When the sun’s out, zip up to the roof, where one of only two hotel rooftop pools in Milan and chic al fresco bar await.

NH Collection Milano Citylife has ten duplex suites outfitted with private terraces and hot tubs.

Though the guest rooms skew snug (as do many European hotels), they’re smartly laid out. On top of that: the low-slung beds are dreamy; the branded NH bathroom amenities incorporate sustainable packaging and formulas; and the ceiling-to-floor windows bathe the space in natural light for a more open feel. In the mood to splurge? Then reserve one of the hotel’s ten duplex suites . Cloaked in calming earth tones, they sport one-of-a-kind configurations and come with private terraces and hot tubs.

Federico Vaccari leads unique insider experiences, including one-of-a-kind photoshoots, through his ... [+] hometown Milan in a beautiful restored vintage Fiat 500.

If you’ve been to Milan before, and want to discover a lesser-known side of the city, book a unique insider experience with Federico Vaccari . For two hours, Vaccari will scoot you around in a beautiful restored vintage Fiat 500 and reveal spots travelers rarely get to see, like Via Abramo Lincoln’s candy-colored houses. Since the car can only carry two passengers, it’s especially well-suited for solo female travelers.

For first-timers: no visit would be complete without seeing the Duomo, Milan's most famous cathedral, and enjoying expansive city views from the rooftop. Teatro alla Scala and Santa Maria delle Grazie, home of Leonardo Da Vinci's famous Last Supper painting, are other cultural landmarks worth scoping out. For retail therapy, head to Milan’s legendary fashion district Milan's Quadrilatero and Via della Spiga. Reserved for pedestrians, this glamorous strip showcases Italy’s biggest fashion houses such as Prada and Moschino. (Bring your passport to enjoy tax-free shopping.)

Where to Eat

A traditional Puglian snack of fried dough stuffed with cheese and tomatoes, Panzerotti is one of ... [+] Milan's most popular street snacks.

Despite being frequently overshadowed by Naples, Rome, and Bologna, Milan is a worthy dining destination in its own right. As of 2023, it’s home to 17 Michelin-starred restaurants like Rome, which run the gamut from Enrico Bartolini ’s innovating tasting menus to IYO , where modern Japanese fare with European flourishes take center stage.

Bice remains a city stalwart for classic Tuscan fare (Ossobuco alla Milanese, Ribollita) and Federico Delrosso’s timeless design, while Peck has attracted discriminating palates since 1883 with an extensive (and immaculately presented) selection of gourmet meats, prepared foods, cheese, sweets, and wines. Ciacco turns out high-quality, small-batch gelato in classic and experimental flavors like the Robiola-infused “Almost Cheesecake.” For a quick bite to go, Panzo has you covered with made-to-order panzerotti, a traditional Puglian snack of fried dough stuffed with melty cheese and tomatoes.

A first-timer's guide to Atrani

tour guide of italy

Atrani, on Italy's Amalfi Coast, is attracting new interest from tourists thanks to the new Netflix series Ripley © Sean Pavone / Shutterstock

Atrani on Italy's Amalfi Coast is attracting new interest as a filming location in the Netflix series Ripley.

And it's easy to see why. The pocket-sized town is considered one of the most beautiful in Italy .

Once a power to rival its mighty neighbor Amalfi , today Atrani, a UNESCO World Heritage site, takes home the award for smallest municipality in Italy. This enchanting beach town nestled between two mountains is perhaps the one town on the Amalfi Coast that has stayed most true to its original medieval structure. You can still walk through the original alleyways, courtyards, archways and the recognizable scalinatelle (little stairways) that make Atrani look like a Neapolitan nativity scene come to life.

Like all villages on the Amalfi Coast, Atrani has long been a tourist destination due to the natural beauty of its location and landscape. Now, tourist interest in the town is rising even more because of the Netflix series Ripley , starring Andrew Scott, set in Atrani.

A summer's day in a small seaside town built into the side of a cliff

When should I go to Atrani?

Because of its location and mild weather, the perfect time to visit Atrani is in late spring/early summer (April to June) or late summer/early fall (September to October). The tourist season usually soft-launches around Easter and explodes in mid-July. To engage in more sustainable tourism, try to avoid visiting in August, when Atrani is undoubtedly busiest and most crowded.

During the summer months, the Amalfi Coast welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors; this tourist gold rush benefits the local economy, but it’s important to also note the negative impact that overtourism has had. Some towns, including Atrani, have become physically and economically inaccessible at times because of how crowded they are, with prices skyrocketing due to all establishments being filled to the brink. That’s not even counting the irreparable damages to the environment and to the marine ecosystem.

Atrani has mostly stayed out of mainstream attention for a very simple reason: it’s blessed by its size. With 0.2 sq km (0.07 sq miles) surface, the town has no space to physically house too many tourists. At any rate, it is advisable to travel to Atrani in low season.

How much time should I spend in Atrani?

Most tourists make Atrani a half-day stop on their Amalfi Coast trip. If you are staying elsewhere on the Amalfi Coast, take advantage of how close Atrani is to Amalfi and pop in for a quick visit after you’ve been to Amalfi. You’ll notice the different vibe right away: after spending a day in Amalfi, Atrani is the perfect place to escape the chaos while still enjoying the same otherworldly natural beauty of the coast.

You could walk every inch of Atrani in half a day, if you wanted to. How long to stay largely depends on your resources and what activities you want to pursue here. If you want to immerse yourself, relax and truly appreciate the town and what it has to offer, you should spend at least a night in Atrani.

A car winds up a narrow road between tightly packed buildings

How to get in and around Atrani?

Atrani is so close to Amalfi that you can reach Atrani from Amalfi on foot in less than 15 minutes. By car or bus, it takes only a couple of minutes with no traffic. If taking the public bus SITA during high season, be prepared to queue before you can climb aboard, and don’t expect a seat as buses are often very crowded. Tickets (€1.30) must be purchased before climbing on board; the main stop in Amalfi has a ticket machine and various physical stores that sell tickets nearby.

There are no train stations close to Atrani, but there are white cabs that can take you to and from towns on the Amalfi Coast. A tip: always ask for an estimate of the fare before you climb aboard a cab, as the amount might be more than you expect.

Be careful if you’re driving privately, as Atrani has little parking space and traffic is heavily limited. Everywhere on the Amalfi Coast, non residents’ cars can only circulate on alternate days based on license plate numbers, so look into this further if you’re thinking of renting a car to visit Atrani. Through the town hall-sponsored KCity app , you can check if there’s space to park. Car parking usually costs €3 per hour in summer.

If you only intend to visit Atrani for a few hours, another way of reaching it is by walking a scenic path from Ravello, that starts by the church of Santa Maria del Gradillo. Trek for an hour and a half among fragrant lemon trees, ancient stairways, and breathtaking views, until you pass Atrani’s cemetery and the church of San Michele Fuori Le Mura (“outside the walls”) and finally arrive in the main square Piazzetta Umberto I.

Exploring more of the Amalfi Coast? Here's our guide to getting around

A white church building tucked in among narrow alleyways of a small town

Top things to do in Atrani

Everything there is to see in Atrani can be reached on foot. It’s impossible to get lost in such a cozy town, so travel without a map and let Atrani surprise you. Walking around, you can still find traces of its ancient and glorious origins in its architecture. You’ll stumble upon churches that have stood here for almost a thousand years, like the beautiful Santa Maria Maddalena, San Salvatore de Birecto and Santa Maria Penitente.

A classic activity, especially for families , is to spend the morning at the seaside and take a dip in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Atrani’s sandy beach is small – only 130m (426ft) long – and you must reserve and pay for your spot in advance. On average, two chairs and an umbrella cost €30, and can be occupied by a max of 5 people, of which at least 2 must be children. Pets are not allowed on the beach, except for service dogs.

Don’t underestimate the beauty of Atrani’s beach at night. Come dusk, you might see lampare , fishers' boats, sailing into the night – with their tiny lamps illuminating the darkness, they create an image out of a painting or a fairy tale.

In the morning, if you are not able to get a spot on the beach but you still want to bathe in Atrani’s crystalline waters, you could consider either renting a boat or joining a tour to visit the enchanted hidden corner that the coast has to offer from the sea.

A unique thing to do in Atrani is to prepare their signature dish (sarchiapone) with the locals. Every year on July 22, Atranesi eat sarchiapone to celebrate their Patron Saint. The basis of the dish is a lean, elongated, green variety of pumpkin typical of the hills of the Amalfi Coast. The green pumpkin is carved out of its flesh, which is cooked with onion and minced meat, which will later stuff the sarchiapone before it goes in the oven, along with a filling of ricotta, mozzarella, salami, hard-boiled egg, parmesan, ham… the ingredients can vary, depending on what each Atranese family likes in their sarchiapone . If you don’t happen to be in Atrani on July 22, you can surely ask a local establishment for a private cooking class to make sarchiapone .

No matter when you go in Atrani, one of your meals should be in a restaurant by the beach – like Le Palme or Savò – and you should order a typical seafood dish like scialatielli ai frutti di mare ; you’ll be able to see, taste and smell the sea that’s right in front of you.
