 Harlem Heritage Tours

Harlem Heritage Tours begin conducting authentic walking, gospel, jazz/music, art, food, and bus tours in 1998 with the idea of utilizing the industry of tourism as a way preserving the heritage of Harlem as well as contributing to the development of the local economy.

What makes Harlem Heritage Tours different is that all our  tours are conducted by those who were actually born and raised and still live in the community. As of late many companies offer Harlem tours, but few really know and have lived the true culture of the community – NONE will state anywhere on their sites that they were born raised and still live in Harlem.

The idea has always been to provide the most authentic Harlem tours that work to bring the old heritage of Harlem to life, we are the first company in the USA to develop multimedia walking tours with portable sound and video as you make your way through Harlem – the people love it.

Most of our Harlem tours start at the Harlem Heritage Tourism and Cultural Center, just 15 minutes from midtown Manhattan by way of uptown number 2 or number 3 trains on the red IRT line. Come and view our cultural exhibitions, currently on display “ALI IN NEW YORK” or one of our weekly musical performances, or daily cultural documentary showings.

Come participate with us in the cultural and economic renaissance taking hold presently in Harlem and meet our friends and family along the way. Because we are constantly on the Harlem streets we know who’s who and what’s really happening, therefore it’s easy for us to create interactive experiences between our visiting guests and the local community – come with us and experience REAL HARLEM via the lenses of true locals.

“Walking Tour of Harlem Critique” The walking tour was definitively pleasurable as well as informative. We received an up close and personal view of Harlem not seen on previous visits. The guide was awesome and so was his knowledge of Harlem’s history, even back to the days of Bumpy Johnson. Visited July 2015

Incredible immersive experiences in NYC

"Aṣẹ: Afro Frequencies" at ARTECHOUSE

1.  "Aṣẹ: Afro Frequencies" at ARTECHOUSE

Digital art and poetry have combined for a dive into Afrocentricity and Afrofuturism at this new immersive exhibit in Chelsea. " Aṣẹ: Afro Frequencies " is now open at ARTECHOUSE and runs all summer.

The digital art exhibition promises a "vibrant reflection upon the past, present, and future of the Black experience." It's told through the perspective of London-based Afro-surrealist digital artist Vince Fraser alongside evocative poetry by ursula rucker.

Both artists worked to honor the legacy, struggles, and complexities of the Black experience in their work. Even the exhibition's title, "Aṣẹ" stems from a powerful mantra, affirmation, and philosophical belief held by the Yoruba people of West Africa, meaning "so will it be." (By the way, that's pronounced as AH-shay.)

Harry Potter: The Exhibition

2.  Harry Potter: The Exhibition

  • Things to do

Muggles, take note: You won’t need to travel through Platform 9¾ to get to Hogwarts. The  Wizarding World of Harry Potter   is right here in New York City for a limited time.

The touring show, “Harry Potter: The Exhibition,” is now open in Herald Square, and it’s going transport you. Through the use of dramatic lighting, set design, interactive technology and even scent, the exhibit will make you feel like you are actually there—in Hagrid’s hut, in potions class, dining in the Great Hall, learning how to fight the dark arts, fighting the Battle of Hogwarts and more.

Tickets  are on sale now through April 7, 2024 and start at $29 for adults.

The FRIENDS Experience: The One in New York City

3.  The FRIENDS Experience: The One in New York City

Live like Monica, Chandler, Ross, Rachel, Joey and Phoebe at  The FRIENDS Experience: The One in New York City . It's basically an immersive museum celebrating the '90s sitcom. You'll get to walk through rooms that look exactly like the ones on the TV show.

Photo opportunities abound. There’s a chance to pose with the “Pivot” couch, a backdrop that looks like the Vegas chapel, and a photo opp with Phoebe’s grandma’s taxi. You can even pose on top of Pat the Dog, snap a photo with the giant poking device and take a selfie in Monica’s apartment. Using high-quality cameras, staff take photos at each spot, which you can purchase at the end. But staff will also take free photos with your cell phone if you ask.

It's not just a selfie museum, though. There's a fascinating display featuring the show's costume designer Debra McGuire where you'll learn about her sartorial choices for each character. Another exhibit spotlights artist Burton Morris, whose Pop art pieces decorate Central Perk. Other display cases feature set designs, signed scripts, props and costumes.

The House of Cannabis, NYC’s weed museum

4.  The House of Cannabis, NYC’s weed museum

  • Weird & Wonderful

Many museums start with some kind of orientation, like a map or remarks from a docent. But not The House of Cannabis (a.k.a. THC NYC), the new weed museum in Soho. Instead, this museum starts, quite fittingly, with a trippy “Disorientation Room.”

While this museum boasts plenty of mind-bending multi-sensory bells and whistles, it also showcases art, highlights science and confronts the social justice issues baked into cannabis prosecution. The museum, the first of its kind at this scale, packs every inch of its four-story, 25,000-square-foot space at 427 Broadway with fascinating facts and delightful immersive experiences fit to entertain both tokers and non-smokers alike. Tickets ($45/adult)  are on sale now .

INTER_

5.  INTER_

The energy in   INTER_  feels more like a meditation retreat than a typical gallery—and that’s by design.

The experiential, multi-sensory museum in Soho invites visitors into a heightened state of contemplative awareness through a sound bath, light installations and aspects of meditation all combined with interactive digital art.

Here's a sneak peek inside the museum  — and if you want to  check it out yourself ,  Time Out readers get a discount on tickets with code   TIMEOUT15.

AirOtic Soiree

6.  AirOtic Soiree

  • Circuses & magic

AirOtic Soiree is bringing the heat to Hell's Kitchen with a 21+ cabaret-style performance showcasing incredible aerial acrobatics in a titillating, sensual style. The show takes audiences through an intense story of love, passion, sexuality and eroticism through an immersive circus and cabaret experience including extravagant costumes, seductive choreography and circus artistry.

During the show, dine on dinner and decadent dessert towers curated by celebrity chef Saul Montiel. Before and after the performance, cocktails will be available for purchase.

See it at HK Hall, a historic venue with striking decor in the heart of Hell’s Kitchen, with performances through April 2024.

Sleep No More

7.  Sleep No More

  • Theater & Performance

The McKittrick Hotel is home to the world-famous production of  Sleep No More , a “site-specific, immersive experience” that blurs the line between audience and actor, stage and seating. It   began previews in March 2011 and has been continuously extended over the past decade.

But a s the lights fade out on its 5,000 th  performance  Sleep No More  will conclude its nearly 13-year run on April  28, 2024.  The pioneering performance has hosted over two million guests and has a sister run still ongoing in Shanghai, China.

Go see the show before it closes;   here's our guide   to making the most of the experience.

Summit One Vanderbilt

8.  Summit One Vanderbilt

  • Sightseeing
  • Midtown East

Get ready for heart-pounding experience in the sky unlike any other experience atop a skyscraper.  Summit One Vanderbilt sits atop the new 67-floor One Vanderbilt super-tall—a 1,401-foot-high—skyscraper.

As the city's fourth-tallest building after One World Trade Center, Central Park Tower and 111 West 57th Street, it sits just west of Grand Central Terminal, where you first enter the experience underground. After a trip through a mirrored hallway with its own immersive elements, visitors take an elevator up to the 91st floor, where they're 1,000 feet over the streets and sidewalks of NYC.

Kenzo Digital has created a totally mirrored infinity room called "Air" that reflects the sky and city views over and over, making you feel like you're walking in the sky or on another plane of existence. Looking above you and below you in this two-story space, you see your reflection repeating forever.

One of the coolest parts of the experience is that it changes with the weather and time of day. When the weather is nice, it'll look like you're walking among the clouds. When it's stormy, you'll see the rain fly sideways and around the building.

Sloomoo, a slime museum

9.  Sloomoo, a slime museum

Part visual splendor, part olfactory wonder and part ooey-gooey sensory fun,   Sloomoo Institute’s slime museum  offers a captivating playground for all ages.

While Sloomoo is a highly Instagrammable experience, the founders hope you’ll spend some time away from your phone and immersed in the moment during your 90-minute visit to truly have the slime of your life. You can squish vats of slime, make your own slime to take home and even stand under a slime waterfall—that's truly immersive.

Paris and New York, the emblematic capitals of modern art, represent two crucial stages in the artist’s long career. Paris was his chosen city, and thanks to the avant-garde movements of the 1910s, it provided the young Russian painter with a pool of experimental work, which he enriched with his own cultural references. New York was primarily a place of exile during the 1940s, and yet it gave the artist’s creativity fresh impetus. After the war, several exhibitions and major commissions reinforced the links between Paris and New York and brought Chagall back to the United States, up until the 1970s.

During this immersive exhibition, all the themes and images present in the artist’s repertoire are projected onto the walls of the Hall des Lumières, like intertwined cut-out images. They are complemented by short extracts of classical music, klezmer, and jazz, which were also part of Chagall’s cultural universe. His fantastic bestiary, his marvellous characters from circuses, fables, and the opera, as well as biblical episodes and references to Russian culture, poetically evoke the artist’s rich life experiences, which naturally resonates with the collective experiences of his people and generation.

As a witness of the greatest historical events of the Twentieth Century —from the darkest to the most uplifting— Chagall turned his bold and imaginative art into an instrument of commitment, peace, and hope.

killer mike at blue note jazz club new york how to buy tickets

Four-time Grammy winner Killer Mike will take on the Blue Note in New York for a run of intimate shows in July.

The rapper will perform six shows with the Mighty Midnight Revival on July 29, 30 and 31, with two shows per night — at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The concerts are part of Killer Mike’s Down by Law tour.

Tickets will go on sale April 5 on the Blue Note website.

“I’m from an all-Black enclave in Atlanta so I write it from the African-American experience,” Killer Mike told  Variety about the making of “Michael.” “But it’s very much an American experience. This is as American as Langston Hughes or Norman Rockwell or a Zora Neale Hurston novel. It is very much rooted in the working class. And in the deep South, gospel and blues play a big part.”

In a strange turn of events, Killer Mike was arrested for misdemeanor battery following a scuffle with a security guard at the Grammys, shortly after his three wins in the pre-telecast. The rapper was released by police later that evening, before the televised ceremony ended.

Killer Mike, who is also an activist who has been outspoken about police brutality, systemic racism and social inequality, discussed his “overwhelming” Grammys night on “The View.”

“Backstage was overcrowded, the winners were exuberant, and I think security got a little overzealous. It’s water under the bridge for me,” he said. “All of my heroes have been in handcuffs — [Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Medgar Evers]. I walked out with the same dignity and respect that I walked in with, and I would implore people to just take that from it. Don’t dwell on the bad stuff.”

Lizzo clarifies comments on quitting

AP: Before the continental U.S. tour, you're headed to Japan, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii. What keeps it interesting?

TAYLOR: The audience, always. The event itself has never failed to supply the motivation and the energy that is required. You know, it’s very compelling to go a great distance and to find a crowd of people that have bought tickets to come see me and the band play again.

Over time, it’s something you learn to do, to keep your strength up, keep your health... also, I don’t do more than a couple of shows in a row without a day off. I’ll do more than that if I’m in one town, but generally speaking, we pace ourselves now.

AP : That's good advice.

TAYLOR : I definitely burned myself out a few times.

AP: You're performing at Tanglewood, in your home state of Massachusetts, 50 years since you first performed there. What significance does it hold?

TAYLOR: I was trying to figure out whether or not it was 50 years or 50 shows that I’ve been playing at Tanglewood, and it turns out it’s both. 1974 was the first time I played there. It averages out to one a year, although at one point we skipped a whole decade.

We had an episode where one of my crew members, in a fit of pique, drove a truck across the Tanglewood lawn and made a mess of it. He was told he had to get the truck off the lawn because it had been raining and it was making an imprint on it. As we were breaking down after the show, he was driving out there to unload the mixing board and stuff. But he put it in reverse, stomped the accelerator and tore a great trough, a great furrow in the Tanglewood lawn. And they never asked me back. It was only when (my wife) Kim came along and resurrected my reputation that I was allowed to come back.

It’s been a great privilege... It's turned out to be a great thing for me, to play Tanglewood every year.

AP: Does an anniversary like that — 50 years — allow you to reflect on your career?

TAYLOR: This is  the time of life  when you feel like you ought to get in touch with a lawyer and make a will. You see, the older generation, the people that were your friends and mentors, sort of  checking out one by one . It is a time when you feel as though things are being summed up a little bit and you start thinking about, the whole thing as a totality. You know, a line from one of my songs, “Copperline,” is “I'm only living 'til the end of the week,” and I think that really does describe me.

But, you know, it is a period of time when you look back and see the whole thing, it's important not to internalize that idea of being a big deal. It's important to focus on what it is that you do — and that thing as a craft that allows you to have your place in the world.

AP: What has that allowed you to learn?

TAYLOR: As time goes by, I think it’s wrong for people to judge other people and even to evaluate them, and yet it’s something we constantly do, and we can’t avoid it. But we should mitigate it by knowing that when we judge someone, we’ve got it wrong. They know who they are, and not we. But, of course, in a million ways, all day long, we evaluate ourselves and other people and it’s complicated. It's not up to me determine what my ultimate position in popular culture turns out to be 50 years from now.

AP: That's a value judgment, too.

TAYLOR : I see people selling the rights to their catalogs. That baby boom generation musical expression, which happened between '62 and 1980, that sort of 20 years of amazing activity that happened, I was in the center of it and actually got my start in London  with the Beatles . So, I had a real sense of this generational phenomenon that the music that I was part of, was a big feature in the landscape and we were communicating to each other. We invented a kind of music there. It was predicted by rhythm and blues and folk music. And those two resurgences sort of fueled it and supplied it. It was big.

You see those people now, being in my sort of age group generally, selling the rights to their catalogs and sort of evaluating what their life’s output was worth. You know,  David Bowie  ’s went for like 250 million. I think  (Bob) Dylan ... got like 300 million...  (Bruce) Springsteen  is said to have gotten more than that, like half a billion or something. It’s sort of like monopoly money.

AP: What do you hope people take away from your live show, and are you working on a new album?

TAYLOR: I feel like I’ve got another one in me — sounds like an egg — but I'm writing a little bit.

And as to what I hope people take away from live performances, I hope they take away a sense of connection. You know, live music — the thing that I’m so attached to about it, why I can’t let it go — is that there’s something (that) happens when people come together for a couple of hours for two or three hours and have a sort of collective experience.

It's indescribable. You prepare for it, but when it happens, it’s spontaneous and, in a way, unique. I love it when that happens, and it does most nights.

AP : Give us a call if you consider selling your catalog.

TAYLOR: If someone comes sniffing around, I'll get in touch.

Kristen Stewart Uses Naked Dressing to Make a Point

Her press tour for “Love Lies Bleeding” was something to see.

Ms. Stewart poses in front of a “Love Lies Bleeding” curtain in a black bodysuit, cut very high on the thigh, and black stilettos.

By Vanessa Friedman

Even in the context of the current pantsless trend prevalent on the runway and in some celebrity circles, as well as the vogue for thematic dressing at movie openings, Kristen Stewart’s looks during her press tour for “ Love Lies Bleeding ” have stood out. Rarely has an actress been so unapologetically, gloriously undressed.

Ms. Stewart and her stylist, Tara Swennen, have taken the film’s carnality and covert politics and translated them for the promotional panopticon, forcing anybody watching to confront their own preconceptions about women’s bodies, their sexuality and exactly what empowerment means, while at the same time undermining the whole circus of branded celebrity dressing.

That’s a lot of subtext under very little — clothing, that is. But it was adroitly managed and awfully entertaining to see.

Margot Robbie had fun dressing à la Barbie during her “Barbie” press tour ; Zendaya captured eyeballs and social media during her “Dune: Part Two” camera calls dressed in sci-fi-themed Mugler, Givenchy and Alaïa; and the cast of “Godzilla Minus One” walked the Oscar red carpet in matching lizard-heel footwear. But with her “Love Lies Bleeding” appearances, Ms. Stewart took the concept of character cosplay to a new, more pointed level.

It started in Berlin back in February, when Ms. Stewart shed her shirt for the film’s European premiere, wearing a very short Chanel couture patchwork miniskirt, matching blazer and knit bralet. (She is a Chanel ambassador.) She raised the ante with a controversial Rolling Stone cover in which she wore only a Nike tank top and a jockstrap.

And when she showed up for the film’s Los Angeles premiere in only a “skirts, who needs ’em?” Bettter bodysuit, cut very high on the thigh, with sheer black tights, a black blazer and black stilettos, it was clear that such choices were not mere flukes but a conscious strategy.

As it happens, the motto of Bettter, a label that repurposes men’s suiting for women, is “empower rather than overpower.” Which, given the movie being celebrated, a queer film noir set in a small town in 1980s New Mexico and, as one reviewer wrote, a “ deconstruction of cinematic hypermasculinity ,” is pretty much on the nose.

It was when the promotional juggernaut reached New York, though, that Ms. Stewart really showed her hand. As well as other body parts, in an abbreviated black mini worn with a mesh bra, garter belt-’n’-stockings and a leather blazer for “Late Night With Seth Meyers” and a sheer Monot draped chain halter for “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” Paparazzi caught her exiting her building in tiny cream-colored knit hot pants and a bra worn under a khaki shirt, with stilettos, and then in athletic Chanel micro shorts and matching leg warmers. Again with heels.

The clothes were like a dare to the watching world, a refusal to cater to pretty-girls-in-pretty-dresses gender expectations and a good-natured riposte to the idea that provocation is an invitation. An “I see your judgment and raise you one” piece of fashion politics.

In so orchestrating her outfits, Ms. Stewart, who looked as if she was enjoying herself quite a lot, thank you, demonstrated just how much can be said on the pseudo red carpet even without an E! host asking the point of what she was wearing. You really couldn’t miss her point. After all, she wasn’t exactly covering it up.
