The Goddess holds a conch shell (shankha), discus (chakra), mace (gada) and lotus flower (Padma) in her four hands. A cobra hoods over her head, and two other cobras are enshrined on either side of the Goddess.

Polali Rajarajeshwari Temple is a Hindu temple situated in Polali village at Bantwal taluk in Dakshina Kannada district. Kola King Sadashiva Rai built it in memory of his mother, Devajammani. The temple is located on the banks of the river Shambhavi.

The main deity worshipped at this temple is the Goddess Shakti or Durga, known as Rajarajeshwari (Raja means king and rajeshwari means queen). In ancient times Polali was known as “Ajilamale.”

Located in Moodabidri town near Mangalore city, Thousand Pillar Temple’s main deity is Lord Jain Chandranathaswamy (the Moon God). Since it has 1000 pillars, it is called ‘Sasana Basadi’ or ‘Yekkare Basadi’ (thousand pillar temple).

27. Jalalabad Fort

The Jalalabad Fort is one of the famous sightseeing places in Mangalore. Tipu Sultan built it in 1792 on top of the hill that overlooks the sea. The fort was established to keep a watch on the invading forces from Malabar, which was under British control at that time. You can see many cannons and a huge water tank inside the fort.

28. Aloysius Chapel

The Aloysius Chapel is a Roman Catholic chapel located on the Loyola Hall campus of St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, Karnataka. Built in the Gothic Revival style by Jesuit priests between 1899 and 1901, it was designed by Father A. Brouwet of Mangalore and described as a “jewel of Mangalorean architecture”. The church was built to honour Christian martyrs from the region.

The church is a designated heritage building called “one of the most beautiful churches in South India”.

29. Kadri Hill Park

Kadri Hill Park is one of the famous picnic spots in Mangalore. This park is located on top of a hill estimated to be 300m high. The park has got a lot of greenery and various species of animals and birds.

The main attraction for the tourists in this park is the statue of Lord Buddha which is constructed on the top of a small hill inside the park. There are many gardens and play areas inside the park.

Mangalore Port lies on the estuary of the Gurpur river, which is a tributary of the Netravati River. Mangalore Port is India’s seventh-largest PortPort in terms of cargo volume handled.

The PortPort was constructed to export coffee, grown extensively in Karnataka and the Western Ghats regions due to its good soil and climatic conditions. The port is under India’s Ministry of Shipping and has been accorded with Navratna status by the Department of Public Enterprises. The port is governed by a Board of Trustees having the chairman and 12 trustees nominated from various fields.

4. Sultan Battery – The Historical Watchtower

The Sultan Battery is the watch tower constructed in the era of emperor Tipu Sultan. It is the most fascinating place in Mangalore as it gives beautiful views from there. The tower was constructed to keep a lookout on the invading ships on the Arabian Sea.  On climbing up the stairs to the top of Sultan Battery, you can get to enjoy a really fascinating and breathtaking view of the Arabian sea and the surrounding environment.

The place is also a boating point to head to Thannirbhavi Beach.

5. Kadri Manjunath Temple

The Kadri Manjunath Temple is a historic religious tourist place to visit situated at the base of the Kadri hills. The Manjunatha Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to be the oldest Shiva Temple in Mangaluru. The location of the temple is extremely calm and spiritually attractive.

8. Someshwara Beach

9. New Mangalore Port

New Mangalore Port, also known as Panambur Port is the only major port in Karnataka. It is the 7 th largest port in India located in Panambur, Mangalore. It is an all-weather port that lies north of the Phalguni River to the Arabian Sea.

The commodities are imported as well as exported from the Panambur Port. Mainly the export of minerals like granite, Manganese, and iron ore along with coffee, spices, and cashew are done through the New Mangalore Port. You will get to see medium to large containers and have a unique experience of visiting the port.

1. Mangaladevi Temple

The city of Mangalore was known formerly by the name Mangalapur before it was anglicized by the British. The name Mangalapur comes from the deity Mangala Devi to which this temple is dedicated. The Mangaladevi Temple was established in the 19th century by the King of the Ahepa dynasty. The best time to visit the temple is during the Navratra before Dussehra when the festivities at the temple are at their peak.

2. Gokarnanatheshwara Temple

Dedicated to ‘ Gorakhnatha ’, another name for the Hindu deity Lord Shiva, the Gokarnanatheshwara Temple is a fairly recently built temple in Mangalore. The temple’s architecture however is more akin to the Dravidian style and features a golden colored gopuram which is 60 feet high and is decorated with stucco figures. The temple features some exquisite works of rock carving and sculpting and is a must visit during the major Hindu festivals.

3. Panambur Beach

The site of the new Mangalore port, Panambur Beach is located 13 kilometers from Mangalore. The beach is one of the sparsely crowded beaches in Mangalore and is the best place to go and relax. The beach is safe for secluded swimming and is a great place to relax and refresh your senses.

4. Surathkal Beach

Surathkal Beach is another pristine beach in Mangalore and is located 12 kilometers from the main city. The beach is known for its unique powdery sand which is really comforting while walking barefoot. The place is also known for its lighthouse that provides some great views of the ocean and the countryside.

5. Pilikula Nisargadhama

Located at a short distance of 15 kilometers from Mangalore, Pilikula Nisagadhama or simply Pilikula, is one of the most preferred picnic spots near the city. Located in the picturesque hamlet of Vamanjoor, Pilikula is a haven for nature and wildlife lovers. One can find several wildlife species inside the park including Tigers, Leopards, Bears and a variety of reptiles and snakes. Pilakula also houses a botanical garden, a cage less zoo, and a golf course within its premises.

6. St. Aloysius Church

St. Aloysius Church was built in 1880 by the Jesuit Missionary and is famous for its marvelous architecture and interiors. The church features paintings by the Italian artist Antonio Moscheni that cover most of the walls inside the chapel. The paintings feature the various saints in Christianity and are well preserved by a special committee that is also responsible for their maintenance and restoration.

While the city of Mangalore is a commercial and educational hub, it is also an important tourist town in Karnataka . The city’s diverse Udupi influenced culture and the various types of special Udupi cuisines are also worth checking out along with the abovementioned attractions that Mangalore houses .

Hi, Good morning and how are you It is very nice of you to have noted so many things about mangalore. It was once upon a time where my forefathers for generations lived. Today the legacy I have from them is their memories and our mother tongue konkani. Yes the language of goa is also language of mangalore. Now as hindi differs from one state in the north to other accordingly u may expect people claiming in excitement that our konkani and their konkani is different. Well the basic vocab is same the way of saying is different in mangalore and goa. I hope u don’t mind my tip oh I love to provide useful suggestions. You can visit Mangalore during November to January to enjoy the climate. Mangalore and Mumbai is almost same weather. Most of the people of Mangalore are living in Mumbai.
