Spanish Tourist Gang-Raped In Jharkhand Posts One-Hour Video On India Visit

The Spanish couple left India on March 5, 2024.

The Spanish tourist, who was allegedly gang-raped while on a bike tour with her husband in Jharkhand, has released a video on YouTube in which she has described the horror she went through. In the nearly one-hour-long video, the couple said "a lot has been said, some things were true and others were lies", and they wanted to "reflect on what really happened". The alleged assault took place on March 2 when the 28-year-old was spending the night with her partner in a makeshift tent. The couple, now back in Spain, have visited 67 countries on their ongoing bike trip, which they have resumed.

The couple also said in the video that they want to "put an end to this unpleasant stage".

The video begins with the couple looking for a spot to camp overnight while crossing Dumka. They were looking to stay at a place away from people, but are soon surrounded by locals who enquire about their journey.

The woman claims she was raped by seven men, and the video also shows one of the alleged perpetrators. After describing the incident, the video then shows the couple in hospital with bruises on the faces and hands.

"We decided to record everything, as we didn't really know what was going to happen. If the police were going to take us seriously, if they were going to send us home, we didn't know," a text super on the video read.

The couple left for Spain on March 5 and spoke to South China Morning Post about the incident.

"I think everyone in the world expects me to say 'Don't go to India', but life is far more complicated than that. What happened to me in India could have happened anywhere else. Not so long ago, a couple travelling in Belize, in Central America, the same thing happened to them," the woman had told the outlet .

"My advice to women is to get out of the house, travel and do so without fear. If you are going to camp, it should be in a place not too far from the road where you can easily call for help and have a signal for your phone," she had further said.

Jharkhand gang rape: ‘We've seen death up close’ —Spanish tourist, husband detail encounter with attackers in new video

M ore than a month has passed since the horrifying incident unfolded, where a foreign biker woman was gang-raped by seven men in Jharkhand's Dumka district. Vincente, who is Spanish, and Fernanda, who is Brazillian, have now unveiled a video capturing moments before the traumatic incident and the things that unfolded after. In the 59.34-minute video posted on their YouTube channel ‘Around the world Vicente y Fernanda,’ the couple spoke about the incident and also shared some inside footage.

At the beginning of the video, Vicente said, “The truth is that we didn't know if we were going to put it. A lot has been said, some things were true, others were lies, we want to reflect in our own hands what really happened. After this long chapter, we will put an end to this unpleasant stage and return to the previous chapters. We hope you understand this break we have had, and from now on we will try to continue posting our videos weekly.”

The video also showed the location where they camped and the horrific incident took place. Additionally, the couple also disclosed earlier encounters with men with whom they engaged in some conversation during broad daylight, two of them were also the ones who raped Fernanda.

Vincente also revealed the face of one of the men who attacked them and some conversations on peanuts they had with him. He said the man approached Fernanda who was eating peanuts and took some without asking her. Fernanda also told him not to take it without permission.

The couple later departed the area and returned to their camp a few hours later, assuming they would be the only ones there.

While riding towards the camp at night, Fernanda said, “We are now returning to the place we saw previously to camp. We believe that there will no longer be anyone, at least that is what we hope."

Vincente also gave a reason for their decision to camp at night. He said, "Driving in India is really dangerous but at night chances of having an accident increase significantly, that was one reason why we decided to camp."

While heading to the camp, Fernanda also said in the video, “If I were travelling alone, I don't think I would camp out.”

“Of course because you are a man, that is a difference between women, this is injustice inequality those of us who are fragile are clearly at greater risk,” she said. “If a man comes to fight with you, you are more likely to defend than a woman (sic),” she added.

The video later shifted after the incident, where Vincente said it was the horrific 3 hours of their lives. "If all started at around 8 pm and ended at 11 pm.”

"I didn't know what I was going to do, I thought Fernanda was dead. But she was there in the bushes and suddenly I saw her appear, it gave me a joy that you can't even imagine. I got up and ran towards her, with my hands tied behind."

While heading to the hospital, he said, “Seven guys raped her several times, they hit her. They hit me with a helmet several times, kicked me, assaulted me with stones."

While speaking from the hospital, Vincente said, “I want to leave testimony of this, so that it never happens to you, be very careful when you camp, if you see anything strange, leave quickly."

The couple were later sent to a government house where they stayed for three days with police protection. Vincente also spoke in the video on people asking if they would continue the trip. He said, “We are going to continue, destiny has given us a second chance. We have seen death up close and that has made us reflect a lot. Our life project should not change. In the face of misfortune, we must know how to stand up, be strong and move forward.”

Meanwhile, on March 5, the Jharkhand Police arrested five more suspects, taking the total number of people arrested in the case to eight. "Three suspects involved in the incident were arrested and remanded in judicial custody on March 2, 2024. Five other suspects implicated in the case were apprehended today, on March 5, 2024," the police told ANI in a statement. The Jharkhand Police had also given a compensation of ₹ 10 lakh to the husband of the Spanish woman.

India recorded a cruise tourism footfall of 470,000 in the 2023-24 financial year – its highest ever. Domestic tourists accounted for nearly 80% of this, as international cruise tourism in India has yet to revive to pre-Covid levels.

In 2019-20, the international and domestic tourists were roughly equal out of the 420,000 cruise passengers.

Popularity of cruise tourism in India: While efforts are on to revive international tourism in the segment, there is an increase in popularity of cruises among domestic tourists. Compared to 2019-20, domestic tourists have increased by nearly 85%. Indian tourists are also key for the cruise industry in countries such as Singapore, while Abu Dhabi is also seeking to attract Indian tourists to its cruise offerings.

India’s efforts to boost cruise tourism: India is seeking to boost its cruise tourism. During the G20 Summit last year, secretary of tourism V Vidhyavathi had said that India is aiming to attract 4 million cruise tourists by 2041, up from around 300,000 in 2023.

For this, a draft national strategy for tourism has also been formulated with the aim of making India a preferred cruising destination across deep sea cruises, coastal cruises, river cruises, and yacht cruises.

While cruise lines such as Cordelia Cruises and Costa Cruise are currently operating domestic cruises in the Arabian Sea, the government is also looking to develop river cruise tourism with an investment of INR 450 billion ($5.4 billion).

Europe Introduces New Schengen Visa Rules for Indians

The European Commission has introduced a new visa “cascade” regime for Indians when applying for the Schengen visas. The regime aims to offer longer, multi-entry Schengen visas to Indian tourists.

Speaking to industry players, Skift reported that while multi-year visas with longer durations were already offered to Indians, there was no standard policy in this regard. This new policy is likely to make the issuing of such visas more standardized across all Schengen states.

However, this new regime is not likely to speed up the visa processing times, which is currently posing to be a major challenge for Indians as they gear up for their summer travels.

India’s First Bullet Train to Run in 2026

India is set to get its first bullet train in 2026, said Indian railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The minister said that the construction work for various stations on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train route has been progressing well.

The maiden bullet train corridor in India will cover a distance of 508 km, of which work has been completed on more than 290 km. Initially slated for completion in August 2022, the project ran into delays over land surveys and acquisition.

Currently piloting at a few hotel properties across India, the system aims to ensure that the sunset views from hotel rooms in luxury properties are in line with what they were advertised to be. The ratings will be granted on a five-point scale on the basis of various parameters such as location, wind speed, AQI, and cloud cover.
