Sri Lanka - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips
Imagine walking among ruins that date back more than 2,000 years, followed the next day by a trip through the rainforest or a relaxing lie on a sandy beach. All of this is possible if you plan a holiday to Sri Lanka, an island country with incredibly diverse landscapes and a rich history. A trip to Sri Lanka will introduce you to welcoming people, eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, and tantalising dishes taking inspiration from Indonesian and Indian cuisine.
Tour Highlights
- Experience the artwork of the Dambulla Buddha caves
- Ride the train from Kandy to Ella (often called the world’s most scenic train route)
- Watch for wild elephants at Uda Walawe National Park
- See Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree that is over 2,200 years old
- Climb Adam’s Peak, a sacred mountain in the heart of the jungle
- Sip on green tea at a plantation in Ella
Travel Tips
- Brush up on your history before visiting Sri Lanka. In particular, get familiar with the country’s civil war, which only ended in 2009. Be respectful as the country is still healing, and avoid engaging in political chat with a local.
- Sri Lanka has only recently seen a huge leap in tourism, so some areas of the country are still unequipped for tourists. If travelling outside high tourist areas, be prepared for little English, unpaved roads, and fewer convenience stores.
- Hygiene standards are much laxer than you are used to in Sri Lanka. To avoid food poisoning, skip the street food in favour of sit-down restaurants - and don’t drink the tap water. Check with your country’s travel authority about any recommended vaccinations, such as Hepatitis A, before travelling.
- Wondering what kind of electric adapter you’ll need for Sri Lanka? You’ll actually need three! Three-pronged UK sockets, two-pronged European sockets, and rounded three-pronged sockets (used in India and Nepal ) are all common in Sri Lanka.
- Hoppers are the go-to snack in Sri Lanka, and they absolutely cannot be missed. Made of fermented batter (usually rice flour or sourdough), the bowl-shaped dish is pan-fried and served with curry, relish or an egg.
Sri Lanka has seasonal weather so please do check up on best time to visit Sri Lanka before planning your tour.
Tours in Sri Lanka - Questions and Answers
Sri Lanka is a medium-risk country with moderate crime rates. Most travelers do not feel unsafe in the country. However, you should always be cautious while you are there. Crimes that tourists are most likely to encounter are pickpocketing and bag snatching, both of which are fairly common in Sri Lanka.
In addition to this, solo female travelers are at risk of sexual violence, which is why we always recommend choosing a group tour rather than exploring the country alone.
Your Sri Lanka tour price can vary greatly, depending on the length of the trip, the month you are traveling, and the accommodation and services that you wish to book. Two weeks in Sri Lanka , for example, can cost anywhere from around USD 800 to USD 2,500 per person.
If you are looking for something less expensive, you can opt for tours lasting between four to seven days that can be booked for USD 500 or less. However, please keep in mind that most tours do not include international flights, visa charges, and travel insurance, which you will have to factor into your budget.
Travelers heading out to discover Sri Lanka on their own (without a package tour), should be prepared to spend around USD 40 per person, per day on food and accommodation.
Sri Lanka is full of incredible sights and is certainly not a country to rush through. We suggest spending no less than five days in the country. However, if you have time, two weeks in Sri Lanka is ideal. For further guidance, check out our in-depth travel guide on how many days to spend in Sri Lanka.
Given that the country has numerous destinations worth exploring, we suggest that you plan a trip that allows you to stay in at least three destinations. Many travelers spend a night or two in Colombo since the capital city has an international airport along with some noteworthy sights.
Galle and Matara are probably the most touristy areas of the country with the best beaches. But if you are planning to include surfing in your itinerary, be sure to check out Arugam Bay on the east coast. And do not miss your chance to explore Kandy , a beautiful city surrounded by mountains, tea plantations, and lush rainforests.
Two weeks in Sri Lanka can cost anywhere from around USD 800 to USD 2,500 per person. When checking out trips online, make sure that you go through what your tour includes, as each trip has different inclusions and exclusions. For example, most group tours will cover all meals and accommodation and admission to the attractions listed on the itinerary. So, generally, you will need to bring enough cash for snacks, drinks, and any additional activities you wish to do.
To give you an idea, a cappuccino in a coffee shop is around USD 2, and a burger at McDonald’s costs USD 1.50 in Sri Lanka. Similarly, a beer in a restaurant can be had for between USD 1.50 and USD 3.
The Sri Lankan rupee is not a major currency. Therefore, we suggest that you exchange your money once you arrive to get the best rates. Although Sri Lanka boasts an incredible variety of street food, please make sure that your food is cooked thoroughly and in a clean place before tucking in to avoid stomach upsets. Similarly, since tap water is not safe to drink, we suggest buying bottled water throughout your stay in the country.
Also, make sure that you respect the culture and rules. For example, dress modestly and remove your shoes when visiting temples. And, if you are lucky enough to find some holiday romance, refrain from public displays of affection as they are frowned upon in some parts of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with a lot of sunny days and an average coastal temperature that hovers between 22°C and 32°C. However, the best time to visit the country depends on the destinations you wish to cover. It is best to take in the highlights of the country’s southwestern coast between December and April, before the monsoon kicks in, while the country’s east coast and areas to the north are best visited between May and September after the showers are gone. Learn more .
Given the geographical diversity that Sri Lanka has, travelers get the chance to pick from a variety of terrain during their stay in the country. For example, Sri Lanka’s central region is a hill country famous for its tea plantations and untouched natural beauty. For wildlife safaris, head to the country’s east, and if you are a beach lover, there are few destinations in the world that rival the sandy stretches along Sri Lanka’s south.
Furthermore, for those looking to surf, there are two popular surfing spots in the country. These are Hikkaduwa on the southwestern coast and Ahangama (or Arugam Bay) on the east.

On March 12th you’ll have your chance to learn how to bring the taste of Sri Lanka back with you! You’ll visit a local market and learn more about Sri Lankan ingredients before your very own cooking class, eating the fruits of your labor for lunch.
Later this afternoon we’ll visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Polonnaruwa was the royal capital of Sri Lanka from the 11th to 13th centuries, and its monuments are preserved beautifully. From the rock temple at Gal Vihara to the Royal Palace and the circular relic house at Vatadage, Polonnaruwa’s sites are sure to fascinate and inspire. (Not to mention, this is one of the locations where Duran Duran filmed their “Save a Prayer” video in 1982—it’s pretty much a travel ad for Sri Lanka!)
March 13-14
On March 14th, we’ll fawn over 4,000 species of flora at the Royal Botanical Gardens. These gardens are renowned for their magnificent orchid collection. The origins of the Botanic Gardens date as far back as 1371, and the framework for the modern-day Botanical Garden at Peradeniya was formally established in 1843. Once reserved exclusively for Kandyan royalty, today everyone can enjoy the most impressive and largest garden in Sri Lanka.
Kandy is home to countless temples, and tonight we’ll visit its holiest venue, the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa). This temple is a venerated place for Buddhists all over the world, as it is said to house the Buddha’s left canine tooth, retrieved from his funeral pyre. This important relic was smuggled into Sri Lanka in the 4th century and has been carefully enshrined in many former capitals of Sri Lanka, finally coming to rest in Kandy in the 17th century.
March 15-16
We’ll say goodbye to Kandy and start our adventure through the central highlands of Sri Lanka & her iconic tea plantations. We’ll depart to our next destination, Bandarawela, by train. By all accounts, this is one of the most picturesque train rides you can experience!
The British brought tea to Sri Lanka (the island they formally called “Ceylon”); in fact, in 1824, a tea plant was smuggled from China to Sri Lanka. Over one million Sri Lankans are employed, directly or indirectly, by the tea industry, and 4% of the entire country is covered in tea plantations. This train ride is about 7 hours in total, but the scenery before you will make it seem to go by in a flash.
Upon arrival in Bandarawela and our hotel, Orient Hotel , you can choose to visit a local tea factory to learn a bit more about this wonderful plant and the art & science of cultivation and processing tea in Sri Lanka.
On March 16th we’ll have an opportunity to hike around the tea plantations in the early morning light and experience their beauty up close. It’ll feel good to stretch your legs after the long train day yesterday! The afternoon will be yours for resting or exploring.
We’ll say goodbye to the highlands and make our way to the southern coast at Yala, staying overnight at Jetwing Yala hotel . You can take advantage of the spa, the pool, or the beautiful beach. This beach is better suited for walking and exploring than swimming ( but the next beach on our itinerary is great for that—and if you’re in the mood to swim, you can use the swim-up bar at Yala Jetwing’s 75-meter swimming pool! ) The natural area around the hotel and beach boasts elephants and other wildlife not infrequently—what will you see from the comfort of your ‘home away from home’?
Later today we’ll take an evening safari in Yala National Park. Maybe we’ll see a rare Sri Lankan sloth bear , or a herd of wild Asian elephants—or maybe even the endangered Sri Lankan leopard, if we’re lucky!
March 18-19
We’ll take an early morning safari inside Yala National Park on our way to our next coastal home base in Mirissa, at the Mandara Resort . We’ll enjoy two nights here directly on the beach where we can enjoy vivid sunsets and the freshest seafood Sri Lanka has to offer. We can even take a tuk-tuk tour of the fishing village of Weligama where colorful fishing boats bring back their loads of fresh fish to sell along the shore.
March 20-21
This morning we’ve included a whale-watching expedition for you. We may see blue whales (the largest animal on the planet), sperm whales, and possibly even a humpback whale! After our morning at sea, we’ll head to Galle (45-minute drive). On the way we’ll witness the art of stilt fishing, a method unique to Sri Lanka. We can meet with a local fisherman and learn about their mesmerizing craft, and we’ll enjoy a delicious seafood lunch (vegetarian options available, of course!)
We’ll then settle into our hotel, The Heritage Galle Fort . Galle Fort was first built in 1588 by the Portuguese, then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century. The Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers. We’ll tour the fort on the morning of March 21st before we head up the east coast to Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka and a lively city in its own right.
Tonight is our final dinner together on this journey around Sri Lanka. Let’s raise a glass to this beautiful island nation and all that we’ve experienced together!

We do everything in our power to do right by our guests. We are proud to say that in the wake of our COVID-related trip cancellations through 2020 and 2021, we were able to offer each of our guests the choice of a 100% credit, if not a full refund.
We’ve re-examined each trip and done our best to reduce the deposit amounts as much as possible. Upon your registration, your deposit immediately goes toward reserving your space for flights, hotels, and excursions that must be booked months in advance and are often non-refundable (particularly in Kenya and Rwanda).
Cancellation by our guests
The cancellation charges are as follows unless otherwise indicated on the detailed itinerary for each trip. All cancellations must be received via e-mail or US mail.
- Cancellations prior to 120 days to departure, money will be refunded minus the non-refundable deposit.
- Cancellations received 61 to 119 days prior to departure are subject to a penalty of 50% of the total cost of the trip.
- Cancellations received 60 days or less prior to trip departure will forfeit the entire cost of the trip.
If a trip is cancelled by RetreaTours
When a tour is cancelled in the case of force majeure , the Tour Participant will receive a refund minus any funds that we are unable to recover from any supplier.
You can see the full cancellation policy in our contract here.

PASSPORT/VISA
What do i need to know about the visa .
First and foremost, your passport MUST be valid at least 6 months beyond the end date of the trip (that is, September 2022), and you’ll need two empty pages in the Visas section of your passport (make sure they are in the Visa section, not the Amendment or Endorsement section).
The Sri Lanka visa fee is $35 and we will walk you through the procedure.
I have special dietary needs—can I be accommodated?
Vegetarians and vegans will find plenty of delicious curries and dal available along with local rice and other starches. Celiacs and those avoiding gluten will also enjoy the abundance of rice, meat proteins, and vegetable options, as well. Part of your registration includes asking about dietary allergies and special needs, but please feel free to contact us beforehand if you have any specific questions or concerns about Sri Lanka food.
You can read more about the specialties of Sri Lanka cuisine here.
Can I drink the water?
In a word, No. Although many cities around the world are getting more advanced public water systems, we don’t recommend it. Not only from a pathogen standpoint, but it’s a different set of bacteria than your body is used to. Why risk an upset stomach if you don’t have to? We recommend drinking only bottled water, and you will want to rinse your toothbrush off in bottled water.
What vaccines do I need?
None are required to enter Sri Lanka, but we suggest you work with your physician or your area’s travel health expert to decide what options are best for you. You can read the American CDC’s Sri Lanka recommendations here and the Scottish NHS Sri Lanka recommendations here .
RetreaTours requires a COVID-19 vaccination series completed at least 30 days before entry into Sri Lanka.
What about malaria? What about Zika?
As always, we request that you work with your physician or travel doctor when making these choices. Please see our blog about this topic for more information about malaria.
The World Health Organization declared Sri Lanka free of malaria in September 2016.
Please click here to learn more about the CDC’s recommendation about Zika in Southeast Asia (please note that Sri Lanka is not currently listed as a country of concern).
*All of the information here is for reference purposes only and is not intended to substitute for advice from your licensed health care professional. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any health condition or disease. If you are experiencing medical issues, you should contact your medical health care provider.
Do I need travel insurance?
We require that our guests carry travel insurance because it just makes sense. It’s a relatively small expense but affords huge peace of mind! When choosing a travel insurance policy we require that you are covered for emergency medical expenses, medical evacuation, and repatriation. We also highly recommend you take out trip cancellation insurance, as this may cover cancellation penalties in certain circumstances if you have to cancel your trip unexpectedly due to illness, injury, or other unforeseen circumstances.
Please see RetreaTours.com/Travel-Insurance for more information.
How much money should I bring?
Only what you need for extras (souvenirs, alcohol, spa treatments/massages, etc) and a tip to your local expert guide, since everything else on this trip is included! We have included all base tips, but we would never take away the opportunity to tip more if you feel moved to do so.
How do I get the local currency?
The local currency in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lanka Rupee (LKR). You can either exchange cash in Sri Lanka or use a local ATM (which we prefer) to get LKR. Just make sure you call your bank and credit card company to let them know you’ll be traveling in Sri Lanka , so they don’t put a hold on your card when they see it being used halfway across the world. You do NOT need to exchange money before you arrive in Sri Lanka, as exchanging money while still in your home country usually has a very poor exchange rate.
COMMUNICATION
How can my family get ahold of me in an emergency.
Before the trip begins we will give you the contact information for our hotels to pass along to your loved ones. If you choose to bring your cell phone or tablet, you can use VoIP services such as Skype, WhatsApp, and FaceTime to connect with your loved ones at home, as well.
We highly recommend that all guests download and set up WhatsApp before leaving home, as that is an easy way to stay in touch with each other while at the hotels on tour.
RetreaTours is Climate Positive!
We purchase triple carbon offsets for your travels with us—that’s from your home, through the entire tour, and back to your home again, times three !
RetreaTours is officially a Carbon free ® Partner with Carbonfund.org , as well as a partner with Cool Effect .
You may have heard the term “carbon neutral,” which means that a company offsets as much carbon as it produces. With this 300% offset, RetreaTours is actually offsetting more carbon than we produce each year, making us “carbon negative” (or “climate positive,” which has a nicer ring to it!)
Since 2012 we’ve focused on making travel safe and easy for our guests; with our triple carbon offset tours, we’re pleased to make our trips as sustainable as they are memorable.
Please see more at RetreaTours.com/CarbonNegative
About your Arrival or Departure
This journey will officially begin at dinner on February 16th or March 8th, depending on your journey. If you wish to arrive early, we can help you make arrangements at our starting hotel or elsewhere.
Please remember that if you arrive in the wee hours of February 16th/March 8th (~2 to 5 AM), you’ll still need a place to rest your weary head, necessitating a room the night of Feb 15th/March 7th (the morning of Feb 16th/March 8th). Otherwise, you may have to wait until 2 PM to check-in since we cannot guarantee an early check-in.
No fear if you can’t arrive until after dinner on Feb 16th/March 8th; we’ll make sure you are caught up to speed and know when to meet the group for departure on Feb 17th/March 9th and you can meet everyone at breakfast!
Early Departure
You will arrive back in Colombo in the late afternoon of March 1st/March 21st. Dinner and your hotel room that night are included, as well as breakfast on March 2nd/March 22nd. If your preferred flight leaves late on the night of the 21st or early in the pre-dawn hours of the 2nd/22nd, you will still have a hotel room to repack and freshen up before your flight.
Suggested Packing List & Temperatures
Weather notes.
The average temperature in your travels around Sri Lanka will be between 75 and 90°F, with a relative humidity between 65% and 90%. Although this is not the rainy season, rain can still occur, so you’ll want to bring some protection from the sprinkles (or the sun!)
Packing List
Coming soon!
We require that each guest carries travel insurance that covers emergency medical treatment, and emergency evacuation and repatriation.
We suggest trip cancellation insurance , as well, as you never know what obstacles life can toss at you leading up to a trip. However, we do not require this coverage, we only suggest it highly.
Below you will find some options to look into, if this is a new world to you. However, we ask that you carefully consider your choice in travel insurance . What works for some people may not work for others, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions. Please do take the time to consider the best policy for your individual needs.
World Nomads provides medical coverage for guests under 70 that includes trip cancellation, as well. You can use the box on this page to get a quote and see coverage.
InsureMyTrip.com is a good place to see and compare many policies at once, and you can refine the options by what coverage you would like. This website includes options from companies like Allianz, Travel Guard, Trip Assure, April, GeoBlue and more.
It may also be a good idea to check with your credit card companies, especially American Express, to see if they offer any medical coverage for travel.

Sri Lanka Tours & Holidays
Pristine rainforest. Ancient rock fortresses. Wildlife aplenty. And some of the most perfect beaches on the planet. There are so many reasons to visit Sri Lanka.
One day you could be hiking the Knuckles Mountain Range, high in Sri Lanka’s hill country; the next, travelling by train through tea plantations and into the mountains. And when you start each morning with curry, hoppers and a cup of the local tea , you know it’s going to be a good day. Climb Lion Rock, a dramatic carved-rock fortress in Sigiriya, and explore Jaffna in the island’s north, previously off-limits to travellers. The only struggle you’ll have in Sri Lanka is knowing where to start.

Best time to visit sri lanka.
Sri Lanka is blessed with a tropical climate, with temperatures remaining in the high 20s throughout most of the year. To soak up some sunshine, be sure to come during the dry seasons (June - August and December – March). The rest of the time it's the monsoon season, so expect rain during this time.

Culture and customs
As an important stop on ancient trade routes, there’s a great mix of cultural influences present in modern-day Sri Lanka. The majority of Sri Lankans are Sinhalese Buddhists, followed by Tamils (who are mostly Hindu) and a small amount of Christians and Muslims. Various religious festivals and holy times are celebrated regularly in Sri Lanka, from large nationwide holidays to local village celebrations. As a fairly conservative nation, most locals dress modestly and displays of affection are not considered appropriate in public.
The British influence is still evident in Sri Lanka’s culture, cuisine and buildings. Drinking tea and playing cricket are the most obvious remnants of British colonial rule, although you’ll also find country cottages dotted throughout some rural regions with some serving traditional English fare like roast chicken and beef. Travellers will find that most Sri Lankans, despite having little, are quick to share their food and friendship. Known for being hospitable, generous and kind, when being offered tea or food in someone’s home, it is considered impolite to decline.
Eating and drinking
Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.
Things to try in Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan curries are among the hottest in the world, but don’t let that put you off. Fragrant, coconut-based curries packed with chilli, garlic, turmeric and coriander will give your tastebuds a treat.
Being an island, Sri Lanka has access to an amazing array of seafood. Feast on fresh crab, swordfish, lobster and squid - or choose a fiery seafood-based curry.
These egg-filled crepe-like wonders can usually be found at breakfast buffets. Usually made from rice flour and coconut milk batter, they are a Sri Lankan twist on the traditional pancake.
With miles of tea plantations, Sri Lankans have grown accustomed to drinking their popular home-grown cash crop. Tea is served with milk and sugar almost everywhere in Sri Lanka, mainly at breakfast and during the day.
Geography and environment
Situated in the Indian Ocean, the island of Sri Lanka lies just under the Indian subcontinent, to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal. Much of Sri Lanka receives a high level of rainfall during the monsoon season, with the dry northern areas being the exception. Due to the high level of rainfall, tropical evergreen forest proliferates around the country. Despite extensive land clearing for agriculture, there are still pockets of national parks and biosphere reserves around the country that hold much flora and fauna, including herds of wild elephants, deer and a wide range of birds. Sri Lanka’s remaining forests and protected areas are rich in biological diversity and remain popular with tourists looking for wildlife and adventure.
Sri Lanka’s main cities are typically built up, busy and increasingly becoming more multicultural and cosmopolitan. In comparison to Sri Lanka’s fast-paced, city-dwelling residents, many Sri Lankans still live in villages with simple housing and work predominantly in the agriculture and fishing industries.
History and government
Early history.
Sri Lanka was occupied by hunter-gatherers for thousands of years before the arrival of Sinhalese tribal groups in the 6th century BC. Buddhism arrived on the island sometime during the 3rd century BC and as a result, the city of Anuradhapura became the capital and centre of Buddhism. This Buddhist Kingdom endured years of Tamil raids until Anuradhapura was abandoned in favour of Polonnaruwa in the south. By the 12th century, Tamil rulers had a permanent presence in the north, where Hinduism still flourishes today.
The harbours of the south soon became important trading centres for Arab traders but by the 16th century a new wave of foreign influence began with the arrival of the Portuguese, then the Dutch. Sri Lanka’s wealth of cinnamon and geographic trading advantage appealed to the Portuguese, who slowly took over the island until the Dutch drove them out in the early 17th century. Remnants of this time can still be found in modern-day Sri Lanka, with colonial forts, cannons and other ruins dotted throughout the country, especially along the coast. By 1795, the British arrived and captured the island from the Dutch. Sugar, coffee, tea and rubber plantations were soon established by the British, along with Western schools, churches and colleges.
Recent history
Sri Lanka (Ceylon) was officially granted its independence in 1948 but continued to maintain relatively good relations with the British. By 1960, Ceylon had the world’s first female prime minister and in 1972, the name Ceylon was replaced with Sri Lanka, which had just become a republic (but remained a member of the Commonwealth). These changes in government and moves towards independence were largely Sinhalese-centric, which created some tension with parts of the Tamil population.
From 1983 to 2009 Sri Lanka endured an intermittent civil war, which resulted in some displacement of people and human rights violations. More recently, parts of Sri Lanka were devastated by the 2004 tsunami, yet Sri Lanka has rebounded with an increasingly stable economy based on agriculture, tourism and telecommunications. With one of the best-performing stock exchanges in the world, Sri Lanka has emerged from conflict, natural disasters and colonisation to become a rising tourist and economic hotspot.
Top 10 spiritual spots in Sri Lanka
1. bodhi tree.
Located at the ancient site of Anuradhapura, this sacred fig tree is said to have grown from a sapling of the Bodhi Tree that Buddha was sitting under when he became enlightened. This holy spot has long been a pilgrimage site for Sri Lankans and is now becoming a place of spiritual interest for visitors too.
2. Dewatagaha Mosque
One of the oldest mosques in Sri Lanka, this prayer place for worshippers of Islam has stood in Colombo for hundreds of years. The striking domes and minarets stand out in the Colombo skyline and provide a spiritual epicentre for Sri Lanka’s Muslims.
3. Temple of the Tooth
This Buddhist temple, located in Kandy, is named for the holy relic (said to be Buddha’s tooth) that is housed inside. It's a World Heritage site that has survived bombings and the ravages of time - visit here to see worshippers deep in prayer under the elaborate golden roof.
4. Dambulla Cave Temple
This well-preserved series of cave temples is brimming with paintings and statues that date all the way back to the 1st century. With colourful depictions of Buddha, Sri Lankan kings and various Hindu gods and goddesses, this is one of the most elaborate cave complexes in Asia.
5. Adam’s Peak
Sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and Muslims, Adam’s Peak is arguably Sri Lanka’s most popular pilgrimage spot. Surrounded by wildlife reserves, the walking trail leading to the mountain is a stunning walk regardless of religious persuasion. Watching a stirring sunrise from the holy summit is nothing short of magnificent.
6. Polonnaruwa Ruins
These impressive ruins of an ancient kingdom are home to massive palaces, huge statues, imposing temples and an artificial lake. Although historically and culturally important, witnessing orange-robed monks praying at Gal Vihara (a Buddhist rock temple) is a spiritual moment you won’t soon forget.
7. Sigiriya (Lion’s Rock)
This magnificent UNESCO World Heritage site was once a mountain monastery many centuries ago. The rock inscriptions, paintings and ancient ‘graffiti’ show insight into the lives of the monks who lived within the caves and grottoes before King Kasyapa took to the throne and established a capital there.
8. Anuradhapura
The ancient ruins of Anuradhapura are a significant holy place for Sri Lanka Buddhists. As one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, there are many monasteries surrounding this area of supreme veneration.
9. Munneswaram Temple
This elaborate Hindu temple complex is known for its vibrant festivals in celebration of Navaratri and Sivaratri. During this time, the complex is filled with the buzz of devotees who come to attend daily pujas and bathe in the nearby holy river.
10. Mihintale
If you choose to climb the thousand or so steps to the top of Mihintale’s hill, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views and a deeper understanding of Buddhism, as this is the site where Buddhism is said to have originated in Sri Lanka.
Known for its fragrant spices, vibrant fabrics, stunning silver jewellery and one-of-a-kind antiques, it’s difficult to leave Sri Lanka without a backpack full of mementos. From far-flung rural marketplaces to the boutiques and galleries of Galle and Colombo, shopping in Sri Lanka has something for everyone at a relatively low cost.
It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.
Things to buy in Sri Lanka

Although available all over the country, Kandy is one of the best places to buy locally-made handicrafts. Choose from handmade brass and silver jewellery, vibrant fabric bags and scarves, and batik wall hangings.
Home to a multitude of plantations and spice gardens, it’s no wonder some of the world’s best spices come from Sri Lanka. Perhaps buy some saffron, cloves, cinnamon, turmeric and cardamom to take home a taste of Sri Lanka with you.
3. Gem stones
If you’re after a low-cost gemstone, Sri Lanka is a top place to pick up a stone at a great price. Birthstones are popular, as are girls' best friends – diamonds! As always, buy from a licensed gem store to guarantee authenticity.
Festivals and events
Vesak festival.
People all over Sri Lanka commemorate Buddha’s birthday by visiting temples, giving alms and singing devotional songs. Simple, luminous paper lanterns are hung outside homes and food is freely distributed to the public via roadside stalls.

While travelling through Sri Lanka as an LGBTQIA+ is not necessarily dangerous, same-sex sexual activity is still illegal, and we advise that travellers are discreet in public.
Is Sri Lanka accessible for travellers with disabilities?
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
Travellers with disabilities will likely find it difficult to travel around Sri Lanka. Public transport has not been adapted for those with mobility, visual or auditory limitations, and pavements and roads are often in poor condition. Accommodation, too, is unlikely to be accessible for those in wheelchairs, except perhaps in top-end hotels.
If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.
What kind of transport will I use in Sri Lanka?
Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.
Hire a bike and pedal around ancient cities full of fascinating ruins for a fun and interactive way to learn about Sri Lanka’s deep history.
Experience some of the world's most beautiful train journeys in the hill country of Sri Lanka.
Tuk Tuks are the best and cheapest way to make your way around Sri Lanka's towns and cities.
Jump in a jeep for a wildlife safari in Sri Lanka's national parks.
What to wear in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is warm. Sri Lanka is very warm. Sri Lanka will have you sweating unless you’re up visiting the tea plantations in the hills, so light, breathable clothing is essential. Whatever you do, don’t wear any clothing depicting the Buddha – this can get you arrested, as can having a Buddha tattoo.
Does my trip to Sri Lanka support The Intrepid Foundation?
Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Sri Lanka directly support our foundation partner, Zero Plastic.
Zero Plastic aims to reduce plastic waste in Sri Lankan communities through education and volunteer programs. Donations from our trips help them raise awareness for the impact of plastic on the environment and local wildlife and reduce plastic pollution at the UNESCO-listed Sigiriya (and surrounding communities).
Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?
Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.
For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance
How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?
Intrepid takes the health and safety of its travellers seriously and takes every measure to ensure that trips are safe, fun and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend that all travellers check with their government or national travel advisory organisation for the latest information before departure:

Travelling to Sri Lanka in 2022: Everything you must know
- July 27, 2022
- By Gayathri Kothalawala
- Destinations , Travel advice
In recent years, Sri Lanka made a name for itself as a top budget-friendly travelling destination. However, in 2020, the pandemic spelled trouble for Sri Lanka’s budding tourism industry. Two years later, the country is experiencing political instability that further impacts travel. Nevertheless, the island, at heart, remains a beautiful destination. So, if you want to take a chance on the country, here’s everything you must know to make travelling to Sri Lanka fun, exciting and safe.
Despite a spike in COVID-19-related deaths and a surge in patient numbers in early 2022, Sri Lanka seems to once again manage the situation well. The island regularly reviews its security and safety regulations to ensure the health and wellbeing of its population as well as international visitors.
Best time to visit Sri Lanka
East coast – May to October
West/south coast and central – December to April
Currency of Sri Lanka
The Sri Lankan rupee (LKR)
1 USD is approximately 359 LKR, while 1 Pound Sterling is around 427
Sri Lanka’s primary fare is rice and curries. But the island also offers other Asian and western food options
Sri Lanka has two official state languages – Sinhala and Tamil. Most Sri Lankans can also converse in English as well
Travelling to Sri Lanka for history
Sri Lanka has a history that reveals itself in small portions. Much of the ruins that visitors can explore still have areas that are active digs as well. For all that, these historical sites tell a compelling story.
The island’s biggest historical destinations are Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. Both former kingdoms, these areas are filled with gleaming white stupas, man-made tanks that feed harvested rainwater to agricultural zones and ancient palaces. However, they are not the only places where you can encounter glimpses of the past.
When you are travelling to Sri Lanka, be prepared for history to rear its head at the most unlikelist of places. For instance, you may visit a beach simply to enjoy the activities avaialable there. But chances are good that the beach was once the site of a historical meet-cute between royalty!
Romance and Sri Lanka
Who doesn’t love a good love story?
Travelling to Sri Lanka, you are likely to hear about many lovers. Some whose tales had happy endings, others tragic, and all of them engrossing.
Even more, you can add more chapters to your own romance. After all, Sri Lanka has plenty of grogeous destinations that appeal to the romantic at heart!
If you approach it with the right attitude, even the most mundane thing about travelling to Sri Lanka can appeal to the senses.
But perhaps the most romantic thing about the island may be its people. Warm and welcoming grins adorn the faces of any Sri Lankan when a visitor to the country approach them. While they may be shy at first, a little patient conversation is enough to draw them out. And if you manage it, you can hear all those love stories a “proper” tour guide will never mention!
How to get around
If you plan to travel alone, you can use the public transport system. Buses travel to almost all destinations, and trains can take you far. Tuk tuks are ideal for shorter distances. However, for complete independence, you can hire a scooter!
Be sure to pack these!
Travelling to sri lanka for the outdoor adventures.
If you are travelling to Sri Lanka looking for outdoor activities, you won’t be disappointed. There’s plenty of water sports you can enjoy on the seaside resorts. For instance, there’s a certain crowd that travel to Sri Lanka just to visit Arugam Bay . The east coast town has several surfing points.
In the west coast, there are several areas that offer kitesurfing . The central region, with its mountains, waterfalls, valleys and montane forests, appeals to everyone. Nuwara Eliya , for instance, has plenty of diversions to keep visitors outdoors for hours!
Travelling to Sri Lanka offers more dynmic experiences than ever. With each year, the country is utilizing its beautiful geography to even better use. Hot air balloon rides, helicopter tours, prasailing and more are available to satisfy anyone’s thirst for adventure.
Safaris in national parks
If you love animals, you are going to love travelling to Sri Lanka! The island has over 20 national parks all over the country.
The biggest attraction at most of these parks are the herds of elephants. But one or two national parks also provide protection to the elusive Sri Lankan leopards! Sightings of these elegantly sleek big cats are a rare treat. Chances of randomly encountering a leopard are small, but the possibility makes a safari just that bit more interesting!
Each national park is unique and offers a unique experience. Thanks to the different climates, geography and wildlife population, visiting several parks in one trip will never feel boring.
Most of these national parks also hide interesting sites within their premises as well. So a tour of a park doesn’t just promise encounters with the animals. You can explore so much beyond that with the right guide.
Travelling to Sri Lanka and visiting places of worship
Sri Lanka is a delightful hodgepodge of different people. They have different backgrounds, political beliefs, traditions, religions and so on. It’s these dissimilarities that make travelling to Sri Lanka memorable.
Buddhism flourished in the island early on. So it’s no wonder that visitors can find ageless Buddhist temples in most parts of the island.
However, other religions too have found their place within the country and the hearts of its people. One of the best examples of religions co-existing in harmony is in Colombo. The busy city has places of worship for Buddhists, Christins, Hindus and Muslims.
These places of worship don’t just inspire spiritual contentment.
They are also architectural marvels, as well. These buildings reflect the architectural ingenuity of different time periods in the island.
Travelling to Sri Lanka, you are likely to want to visit at least some of these places of worship. Not just to indulge in the spirituality around them. But to also discover the incredible history attached to them.
The beaches of Sri Lanka
Travelling to Sri Lanka and not visiting a beach? Impossible.
The islands’s coastline is a siren call to any visitor. So much so, that several previously insignificant towns are now famous resort destinations! Each beach has something extra to recommend it. One may offer strong waves ideal for surfing. Another may hide a colourfully thriving coral reef just a few feet below the surface of the sea. Still another offers the entrance to a hidden cove.
The more popular, and therefore relaxed beaches are to the south of Sri Lanka. As a result of their popularity, there’s a lot to do near these beaches in addition to sunbathing or playing in the water. Similarly, you don’t have to go far to seek refreshments. The whimsical huts with coconut frond roofs offer simple but delicious fare!
However, less popular beaches are not without their attractions. The primary dra is, of course, the lack of crowds. Visitors can spend as much time as they wish in privacy. On occsion, a local fisherman or two may even bring their poles to catch dinner!
Sri Lanka is currently attempting to recover from a political instability. Due to this, travelling to Sri Lanka may seem unwise.
However, if you are hesitating because of recent events, remember this. At heart, Sri Lanka is a warm and friendly nation. The people who best represt the island are those that live their lives everyday as normally as they can. They go to work, take care of their families, and just wish for peace.
It is them that you will get to know by travelling to Sri Lanka.

The tour was very well rounded and organised. It was so relaxing to see a new country without having to worry about anything logistical. Our guide Sumudu was extremely accomodating - happy to answer any questions and making other desired activities happen (e.g. we went to see a cricket match). Also, the group dynamics were very friendly and meeting new people who become friends to travel with was super nice!!
Grand Tour Of Sri Lanka
Lanka organized very well our tour. What we most liked, was such a variety of highlights: nature, historical sites, animals. Hotel were of De Luxe or Superior level, with good food and services. We have been very lucky to have Nalin as driver and guide. He was very professional and constantly took care of our needs or questions. He gave us all the time lots of info, about history sites, explanation of Portuguise, Dutch or British colonization, about strange fruits (for us), or about tea and rubber tree and so on. He spoke fluenty and clear English. And very important he drove safely the car all the time. I still don't know how could he drives in some places with Tuk Tuk everywhere or crazy buses all around. As during the tour, it was my birthday , we asked him for an Ayurvedic massage and he brought us in a local well known Ayuverdic center near Sigiriya. It has been SUPER! And when we asked him to bring us somewhere to eat good seafood, especially crabs, prawns and calamari, he took us in a affordable and very tasty restaurant, where we had plenty of seafood. If some friends of mine, would like to come to SL, I will recommend BH Lanka and Nalin as driver.

Sri Lanka Experience
As a first time traveller I was really nervous and unsure what to expect travelling and also travelling with a group. Morgan made me feel so comfortable and at ease before I even arrived by making sure I knew exactly where I was going with taxis etc. He was really caring and made us feel like a little family. He was so knowledgeable and well travelled he’s made me want to travel even more. He was so much fun but also very organised and professional so the trip was perfect. I’m so happy this was my first tour and I had Morgan as a leader as he really looked after us all and helped us all connect. Lifetime Experience In Sri Lanka
The round tour of Sri Lanka with my tour guide Janaka was amazing. He showed me the beauty of the country in a loving and courteous way. The program was very varied, all great activities and nice accommodations.
Sri Lanka Uncovered
V was a GREAT tour leader. Always there with a smile on his face. Knew who everyone was straight away without any of us needing to say our names. The amount of Knowledge he had about everything was so so so impressive. He would go out of his way to make sure we experienced everything. Pottery places, palm readers, elephant santuary amongst other things were all things we spoke about as a group and V went and found them all. He really is a great tour leader and Tru are lucky to have him as part of their crew
Best of Sri Lanka
The tour led by Prageeth an independent tour leader contracted by Intrepid Travel , the supplier was phenomenal (above excellent). However my experiences with the wholesaler/booking agency Tourradar was dismal. Once I paid and signed up they were almost non-communicative. I had critical questions about tour information that I submitted to there private network and both times it took over 7 days to get an incomplete response. Since I was a few days from departure, I tried there messenger service on the website and had to wait for 7-10 minutes for each response to a query. I spent over 45 mintues on the messenger to finally get the starting hotel since they would not let me talk directly with Intrepid and to top it off they told me an old inactive hotel. I only lucked out because I happened to book at another hotel which was to my good luck the starting hotel. I never received a tour document from tourradar and they still were claiming my starting hotel was Rani Beach Hotel, which Intrepid has not used for more than 1 year) instead of Ruvisha Beach Hotel which I booked by serendipity. Its hard enough with covid and Sri Lanka going into demonstrations without your tour operator giving you little, no information and incorrect information. I did Cuba with tourradar 3 years ago and it was great -- but with this experience I can no longer recommend them. Top management at tourradar needs to look at this and change their tight close to vest information policy. Your website claims the tour package is delivered about 2 weeks before the trip, why didn't I ever get a package? Why can't you hire enough live operators to respond in a reasonable time (7 minutes is an eternity to wait on an instant messenger that doesn't even tell you what is happening)? Covid while damaging is no excuse.

All of the hikes and safari’s were fantastic. I particularly enjoyed the turtle conservation centre we visited. Should put that into the itenary
Splendour Of Sri Lanka (7 Days) Free Upgrade to Private Tour Available
While a few of the hotels we visited could benefit from some updates, the warmth of the local people, the awe-inspiring landscapes, and the vibrant culture of Sri Lanka, along with the exceptional service provided by the driver, Sanjeewa Perera, made this trip truly unforgettable. Highly recommended.
Splendour of Sri Lanka - ( 8 Days and 7 Nights tour in Sri Lanka )
Solo travel in Sri Lanka felt safe and exciting. Mali, our guide, showed us from Colombo to Ella, and the wildlife was incredible. Staying in cozy places made it even better
Essential Sri Lanka
I had an amazing time in Sri Lanka, such a beautiful country. Prasad the guide was fantastic from beginning to end. He always went the extra mile to make sure the trip was enjoyable, safe and ran smoothly. He shared a lot of local knowledge and was very professional. We got so much done including additional activities that the tour guide went out of his way to organise. The transport and hotels were all to good standard and I would highly recommend this tour.
SRI LANKA- GLAMOUR SRI LANKA - 10 DAYS 09 NIGHTS TOUR
It was a really amazing tour. We traveled last minute to Sri Lanka and as we just decided what we will do upon our arrival and had limited time, we were happy that Explore Vacations organized everything last minute so we could start directly the next day. We had an amazing time. We managed to see so many things during our tour and many thanks to the amazing tour guide. Coming back to Sri Lanka soon.
Cycle Sri Lanka
I love the cycling tour, this was my first time and everyone in the group was so friendly. The staffs were so nice, helpful, promptly when in response. They made me feel so safe. The locals were friendly and the kids were cheerful. I learned a lot about Sri Lanka through seeing the scenery and interacting with the locals. It was the wonderful experience for seeing the country in 2 weeks.

What people love about Sri Lanka Tours in October
Amazing country and lots of things to see! Although just 12 days, it feels a lot longer because you do so much every day. Definitely a great way to experience Sri Lanka without having to think about anything like activities, itinerary or accommodation etc.
The tour organized by BH Lanka Tours was incredible. Nalin our tour guide made it a unique experience. From the very first day, he customized the tour for us, explained everything about Sri Lankan culture and brought us closer to the people and their lives. Nalin surprised us every day with different delicacies that we had never tasted before. In 12 days we were able to get to know so much of the country on a relaxed and incredibly beautiful tour with Nalin and BH Lanka Tours together!!! Thank you Nalin for these amazing trip.
Love Sri Lanka. IntroTravel let me experience this beautiful country with amazing group and the tour guide.

The Very Best of Sri Lanka Tour
Left Column
Sri Lanka is an irresistible destination. Lapped by the Indian Ocean, this tranquil island encompasses idyllic beaches, ancient ruins, verdant tea plantations and oodles of elephants.
Our Sri Lankan adventure begins in Colombo, the nation’s lively capital and ends in the historic former Dutch town of Galle. In between, we explore the cultural triangle of Sri Lanka’s interior, packed full of ancient ruins and sacred sites – the cave frescoes of Dambulla, the ancient site of Sigiriya, and the sacred Temple of the Tooth. We travel into the hills and tea plantations, see elephants in Minneriya National Park and search for leopards in Yala, Sri Lanka’s most famous National Park.
Our Very Best of Sri Lanka tours will have a maximum of 24 people per group. Small group touring gives our guests the opportunity to explore a little closer, enjoying a much more personalised experience and more of a chance to get to know your tour guide and fellow guests. With fewer travellers in our groups, you’ll spend more time seeing the sights. You will form friendships and bond through shared experiences, and memories that will last a lifetime.
As an alternative to Small Group Touring on our Very Best of Sri Lanka tour, we offer the option of Private Touring . Whether you prefer to travel with family, as a group of friends, or you are a couple celebrating a special occasion, Distant Journeys’ private touring holidays provide flexibility and affordable exclusivity for groups of any size. Private Tours enjoy the same carefully planned itinerary and personally-chosen hotels, but with the added benefit of travelling in your own private vehicle with your own friendly and knowledgeable driver/guide and your own choice of departure date.
Save £150 per person on all Sri Lanka tours departing from September 2024 when you book by 1st July 2024.

Colombo, 2 nights
On arrival we transfer to the iconic Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo, for our first two nights in Sri Lanka. This afternoon will be ours to spend at our leisure. Later, enjoy a welcome drink with our Tour Manager and fellow travellers, where we become better acquainted with our forthcoming adventures ahead.
In-flight meals and drinks and dinner included
Following breakfast, we take a sightseeing tour of Colombo, with its fascinating mix of cultures, religions and colonial influences. Visits this morning include the stately New and Old Parliament and Independence Square. We also visit the Pettah, a neighbourhood famed for open-air bazaars and markets, and the captivating architecture of Gangaramaya Temple. The remainder of our day is free to do as we please.
Breakfast and dinner
Habarana, 3 nights
We travel inland to Habarana where, on arrival, we visit an inspiring school project, which was established using charitable donations, and engage with the local school children. Afterwards, we travel to the Cinnamon Lodge Hotel , our home for the next three nights. Our fabulous hotel is surrounded by over 2000 trees that provide a home to serpent eagles, kingfishers and monkeys.
Polonnaruwa and Minneriya National Park
This morning, we explore the medieval city of Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage site. See the grand Royal Palace complex, including the majestic Kings Palace and Audience Hall. Also witness the spectacular Gal Vihare complex featuring four gigantic images of Buddha, cut from a single slab of granite – a dramatic highlight of ancient Sri Lankan rock carving. This afternoon, experience a game drive in either Minneriya or Kaudulla National Parks, both set in captivating Sri Lankan countryside, where wild Asian elephants roam in abundance.
Tour Highlight
We take an early breakfast before visiting the famous site of Sigiriya to discover its fascinating history. Surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, the most celebrated site is Sigiriya Rock with its flat-topped summit, some 200 metres above sea level, that contains the ruins of an ancient civilisation. The more adventurous and energetic amongst us will have the opportunity to climb to the summit, passing remarkable frescos and the famous ‘Lion’s Paws’ along the way. On our free afternoon, we have the option to visit the ancient, Buddhist Mihntale Temple and the Isurumuniya Temple , visit a local village and community, or simply relax in the surroundings of our hotel.
Kandy, 3 nights
This morning, we embark on our journey to the Last Kingdom of Sri Lanka, Kandy. En route we visit the Cave Temple of Dambulla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This amazing complex of magnificent caves dates back to the 1st century BC. Later, we stop at the Sri Lankan Garden in the rural village of Matale, a working spice and fruit farm, to learn about the local trees and crops in the company of our host. Enjoy a traditionally-prepared rice and curry lunch, and continue to Kandy and the charming Cinnamon Citadel Hotel for our next three nights.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
We begin our day with a visit to the sacred Temple of the Tooth, commonly known as “Sri Dalada Maligawa”. A significant shrine for Buddhists worldwide, the temple holds the blessed tooth relic of the Lord Buddha himself. We arrive in time for the morning ceremony and have time to explore the temple grounds. Later, we journey to the elegant Royal Botanical Gardens. With origins dating back to 1371, and once reserved exclusively for Kandyan royalty, these stunning gardens boast some 150 acres of graceful trees, lawns and flowering shrubs. This evening, a cultural show awaits – a fascinating performance of traditional Sri Lankan dances.
Kandy Freedom Day
Enjoy a full day at leisure. Relax by the hotel pool, or perhaps hop on a tuk tuk and navigate the rural setting of Gampola to explore three lesser-known temples with a knowledgeable guide. Alternatively, trek through a nearby rainforest , rich in many species of birdlife, including Layard’s Parakeet, Gold-Fronted, Blue-Winged leafbirds, and Spotted and Emerald Doves. You may prefer to visit Bhikkhuni Monastery , where you may learn the history of Buddhist nuns and meet a bhikkuni who will describe the ordained life.
Nuwara Eliya, 2 nights
Today, we journey towards the cooler climates of Sri Lanka’s hill country on one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys. We join a local train and travel through an idyllic panorama of forests, villages, tea estates and waterfalls. Please note, whilst we endeavour to arrange seats on the train as soon as tickets become available to book, this included rail journey is always subject to availability. We arrive into Nuwara Eliya, which retains a colonial ambiance with its gentlemen’s clubs and mock-Tudor buildings. Enjoy a brief city tour, before arriving at the Jetwing St Andrew’s Hotel, offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside.
Nuwara Eliya
Sri Lanka is recognised as one of the finest tea producers in the world, and today we learn about the region’s tea plantations. During our tour, we explore a vibrant tea plantation and discover the leaf-picking process. We visit the plantation’s factory and learn about rolling and drying the tea, as well as the art of tea tasting. Later, we conclude our day dedicated to Sri Lanka’s tea production in the best possible way, with a fabulous high tea.
Breakfast, high tea and dinner
Yala, 2 nights
After breakfast, we leave the hill country behind. As we descend, we travel through local villages dotted on the mountainside. Marvel at the vistas of tea plantations, forests and waterfalls in an area blessed with some of the most beautiful views in Sri Lanka. This afternoon, we visit the Elephant Transit Home, a wonderful facility which rehabilitates orphaned baby elephants with a view to releasing them back into the wild. Later, we arrive at the stunning Jetwing Yala Hotel, our home for the next two nights.
Safari camp experience 2 nights from £515 per person supplement For those wanting to get closer to nature, there is the opportunity to spend two nights in one of Sri Lanka’s amazing safari camps . Set in remarkable locations, you’ll enjoy two safari drives into lesser known areas of Yala and all meals, along with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Please call for details.
We have an early start this morning as we venture into the scenic Yala National Park, the second largest national park in Sri Lanka. Yala is home to an eclectic array of wildlife including elephants, bears, crocodiles and wild boars. Whilst elusive, the park also boasts the world’s highest concentration of leopards per square kilometre and provides the best opportunity to spot this majestic animal. Our afternoon has been left at leisure to enjoy our hotel, or should we wish, maybe further explore Yala National Park, during an optional afternoon safari .
Galle, 2 nights
Following breakfast, we say goodbye to Yala and travel towards Galle, a striking and historic city on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. The main maritime port for the country for more than 200 years, Galle is famous for its Dutch fort with its colonial buildings, stylish cafés and quirky boutique shops. We take a brief sightseeing tour before arriving at the Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel , sat impressively atop a hillock, overlooking the sapphire waters of the Indian Ocean. This unique hotel was built by the renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa, and inspired by Dutch colonial design.
Galle Freedom Day
With so much on offer, today’s Freedom Day is the perfect opportunity to explore this fascinating region in a way that suits you. For those happy with an early start, there is the option to take a whale watching cruise , in search of the magnificent blue whale. For the adventurous amongst us, we can take a tuk tuk safari – a fun-filled ‘off the beaten track’ adventure to explore lesser known areas of Galle. Alternatively, discover how to paint traditional Sri Lankan masks with help from a renowned artist or learn to cook like a local . For a more relaxing day, be sure to take advantage of the many facilities our hotel has to offer, including spa treatments and two outdoor swimming pools.
Depart Colombo
All good things must come to an end. Nevertheless, we have our final day at leisure including complimentary late check-out, allowing us to further explore the area of Galle, or enjoy one last relaxing day by the poolside to recharge our batteries and freshen up before our evening flight.
Breakfast, in-flight meals and drinks
