The Hottest Hotels

The hotel you stay at can be the difference between a trip to paradise or a disaster abroad. Fortunately, Malta is loaded with hotels of all kinds to fit your tastes.

AX The Victoria Resort is an extraordinary location for any LGBTQ+ traveler yearning for the thrill of Malta. It's an affordable and luxurious choice, and with its perfect location (only a short walk away from the vibrant LGBTQ+ nightlife), it's the ideal spot for city-bound travelers.

The Historical Highlights

With ancient ruins, grand palaces, majestic cathedrals, and wartime wonders, Malta has plenty of attractions for history buffs.

In Malta’s capital city of Valletta, you will find several monuments, landmarks, and relics of the past to roam through. Discover St. John's Co-Cathedral in the heart of the island, where locals remember the memories of Saint John the Baptist and the Knights of Malta. The Grandmasters Palace is another marvelous stop on your trip. Wander through the halls of this magical castle with your partner for a captivating date.

Outside of Valletta, browse through the many ancient temples and World War II monuments. The Ggantija Temples, Hagar Qim, and Borg in-Nadur are some of the most unique temples you can discover in Malta. These complexes date back thousands of years, making them exceptional attractions you can find on your trip. For recent historical sights, head to the Mgarr Second World War Shelter and the Lascaris War Rooms. Malta has remarkable monuments from all eras of history. Be sure to visit them all!

The Brightest Beaches

Malta was nicknamed "the jewel of the Mediterranean" for a reason - now it's time for you to venture out and discover that reason. No trip to Malta is complete without visiting one of its many beaches.

Malta's Blue Lagoon is (arguably) the most popular attraction in all of Malta. Here, you are encouraged to lounge on the sandy shore, visit one of the many bars, sail across the water on a rented boat tour, or even dive in and explore marine life.

Want something more sensual and secluded? You will want to visit Riviera Bay and Gnejna Bay to fulfill your romantic desires. These private coves are the perfect place to whisk your lover away for an intimate date on the beach. Because of its secrecy, Riviera Bay is a famous beach for nudists, LGBTQ+ couples, and other travelers wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of Malta. Gnejna Bay is similar, and it offers several private boat tours and attractions suited for any romantic getaway.

The Scrumptious Spots

After such a long day exploring historical sights and swimming through the best beaches, you're sure to have an appetite rumbling in your stomach. Luckily for you, Malta is loaded with plenty of restaurants to settle your cravings.

Malta provides some of the most excellent restaurants in the world, and the Michelin stars shining on some of these establishments prove just that. Consider dining at ION Harbor, Noni, Guze, or any of their other 31 Michelin-approved restaurants for finer dining. You deserve to dine on the Mediterranean's finest foods - you're on vacation, after all!

Are you looking for something cozier? Perhaps a coffee date with your partner calls more to your romantic spirit. Piadina Caffe and Cafe Maroc are beautiful spots for a lovely little brunch. For local dinner spots, Azar Malta, Adesso, and Venus Restaurant are all charming selections.

Fine Dining

The LGBTQ+ Luxuries

You've wandered through the historical highlights, braved Malta's beaches, and dined on the finest feasts the island has to offer. Now it's time to close the night with unforgettable memories made at the nation's greatest LGBTQ+ attractions.

Is Malta a country or an island?

The archipelago of Malta is a group of islands in the Mediterranean Sea between Sicily and the coast of North Africa. The member state of the European Union is known for its historical sites. The whole country bears witness to the successive conquest by the Romans, Moors, Order of St. John, French, and British. Four of the 21 islands are inhabited, while 18 remain unpopulated. During our first trip to Malta, we explored the two biggest islands, Malta and Gozo. Both have the perfect mix of culture, history, and natural beauty, including the national plant of Malta, the Maltese Centaury .

What makes Valletta – The Fortress City so unique?

Our journey began in the capital city, Valletta , a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its grandeur and captivating architecture. Strolling through the narrow streets of “The Fortress City,” we admired the beautifully preserved buildings, churches, and stunning sea views. Named after its builder, Jean Parisot de la Valette, Valletta is a testament to the island’s rich history. Built in a remarkable 15 years – starting in 1566 – without mechanical tools. Valletta boasts awe-inspiring architecture, including magnificent bastions, forts, and the Grand Cathedral. On top of its history, we experienced a welcoming atmosphere as we discovered cute cafés, bars, and restaurants. Valletta balances perfectly history and modernity, creating an unforgettable experience.

Which architectural wonders not to miss in Valletta’s old town?

A tour around Valletta’s Old Town is an absolute must for any visitor to Malta. Step back in time as you explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site’s rich historical and architectural wonders. Here are some of our absolute highlights. We started our journey at St. John’s Co-Cathedral , a masterpiece of Baroque art and home to stunning works by Caravaggio. As we continued our stroll, we discovered the Upper Barrakka Gardens. A tranquil oasis offering panoramic views of the Grand Harbor. Then, it was time for us to take in the awe-inspiring vistas of the fortified city walls and the majestic ships that dock in the harbor.

Which landmark in Valletta is definitely worth a visit?

We made our way to the Grand Master’s Palace . An architectural gem that serves as the seat of the Maltese Parliament. Museum-lovers will feel at home in Malta. We recommend the National Museum of Archaeology. Here, you can delve into Malta’s ancient past, discovering prehistoric artifacts, including the world-famous Venus of Malta, which offers a glimpse into the island’s Neolithic period.

What’s the best place to go for a stroll in Valletta?

No visit to Valletta is complete without a stroll down Republic Street, the city’s bustling main thoroughfare. Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere as you browse through boutique shops, charming cafés, and local craft markets. And don’t be shy to explore one of the smaller side streets as well. We indulged ourselves in delicious pastizzi, traditional Maltese pastries, as we soaked in the energy of this lively atmosphere.

Does Malta has a cultural scene?

Although we did not have time during our trip, we heard great stories about Malta’s cultural scene. For example, a tip is to visit the Manoel Theatre, one of the oldest working theaters in Europe. Lastly, take a moment to appreciate Fort St. Elmo, a historic fortress guarding the entrance to the Grand Harbor. All the places offer plenty of photo ops. So, do not forget to bring your camera or phone!

AX The Palace in Sliema

During the first part of our stay in Malta, we had the pleasure of experiencing the grandeur of AX The Palace. Situated in the heart of Sliema, this five-star hotel offers a luxurious retreat with stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.

From the moment we entered the lobby, we were greeted by the staff members who ensured every aspect of our stay was impeccable. The beautiful rooms and suites at AX The Palace provide comfort and sophistication, offering a perfect blend of modern amenities and stylish design.

Where to go for lunch in Valletta’s old town?

Exploring the old town of Valletta makes you hungry. Our tip: Indulge in a culinary delight at Rubino Restaurant in the heart of Valletta’s old town. This small but charming eatery serves traditional Maltese cuisine, showcasing the island’s unique flavors. Sample mouthwatering dishes prepared with fresh local ingredients and savor the warmth of Maltese hospitality.

What is the best way to explore Valletta’s Harbor?

Similar to the Venetian gondolas in Venice, Malta also has colorful traditional boats. With good weather, it is an excellent idea to explore the harbors of Valletta by boat. With the Grand Harbor Tour we got some of the best views of the city aboard one of the traditional Maltese boats. A gentle breeze made our tour extra comfortable while we sailed through the crystal waters of Marsamxett and Grand Harbor, surrounded by Valletta’s impressive fortifications.

Especially, the stunning panoramic views of the city’s skyline have enchanted visitors for centuries. For us, it was just the perfect way to get an excellent first impression of Malta.

Casa Ellul in Valletta – Small Luxury Hotels of the World

During the second part of our stay in Malta, we had the pleasure of immersing ourselves in the luxurious ambiance of Casa Ellul. Nestled in the heart of Valletta, this boutique hotel offers an exquisite blend of contemporary elegance and timeless charm. Each individually designed room and suite at Casa Ellul showcases meticulous attention to detail.

The rooftop terrace that was part of our room provides breathtaking views of Valletta’s skyline. It is an idyllic spot to unwind and soak in the beauty of the Mediterranean surroundings. With its central location, Casa Ellul offers convenient access to Valletta’s historical attractions, cultural sites, and vibrant dining scene.

Why do a tour of the Three Cities?

To experience even more of Malta’s culture, you don’t have to go far from Valletta. During our boat trip, we could already admire the mighty fortifications and walls across the Grand Harbor from Valletta. But now it was time to see the three cities up close. We followed the advice from our tour guide and immersed ourselves in Malta’s rich maritime history with a tour to Cospicua, Senglea, and Vittoriosa. Together, they are known as the Three Cities .

These charming destinations offer a glimpse into Malta’s rich past and are a must-visit for history enthusiasts. Walking through their narrow streets, we encountered impressive fortifications, picturesque squares, and ancient churches that show the island’s architectural heritage. Exploring the Three Cities is like stepping back in time, immersing yourself in the fascinating history of Malta.

How did Malta Celebrate EuroPride?

In 2023, we celebrated EuroPride Valletta in Malta’s capital city. The 10-day extravaganza featured  Pride Marches , concerts, and theme parties in Valletta and Gozo. A Eurovision Party, Pride March, the concert of Christina Aguilera… In our  EuroPride Valletta 2023 article , we’ll take you through the highlights of our EuroPride weekend. Showcasing the vibrant LGBTQ+ community and exploring how LGBTQ+ and gay-welcoming  Malta  is.

How to get to the charming island of Gozo

From the country’s main island, we set out on day three to explore the second-largest inhabited island of the archipelago, Gozo. This involves crossing the waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The Gozo Ferries from Cirkewwa take about 20 to 30 minutes to get you there. The fee per person is about €5. And don’t stress if you can’t get a seat inside. You get a free hair toss on deck while enjoying the view.

The charming island of Gozo offers a tranquil and picturesque escape from the bustling streets of Malta. We discovered a greener and more rural side of the archipelago. Here, life moves at a leisurely pace dictated by the seasons, fishing, and agriculture. True to this calmer motto, we uncovered Gozo’s mythical aura by visiting Ggantija Temples, Ta’ Kola Windmill, Ramla l-Hamra Bay, Calypso’s Cave, Qbajjar Salt Pans, Victoria, and The Citadel, along with the enchanting Dwejra.

Where to go for fresh seafood and a breathtaking view in Gozo?

Savoring the freshest seafood delicacies while enjoying breathtaking views of the azure sea is just another tip for your gay travels to Malta. Ta’ Karolina Restaurant in Xlendi is the place to go. Although Daan didn’t hit the jackpot here, being a vegetarian, he did appreciate the location of this cozy waterfront restaurant surrounded by rocks. At the same time, Karl tried out the delicious, fresh seafood brought directly to the table from the Mediterranean Sea. Let the ocean flavors of Gozo come alive on your plate as you relish every bite.

What is Malta’s most scenic fishing village?

Back on Malta’s big island, culture and history await beyond the bigger cities. We explored the cozy fishing village of Marsaxlokk, Malta’s premier fishing spot. It offers charming walks along the promenade, where traditional fishing boats, the Luzzu and Kajjik, painted in striking red, yellow, green, and blue, add to the scenic beauty. The calm bay waters mirror these colorful vessels, creating a perfect photo opportunity.

Where to eat in Marsaxlokk?

Marsaxlokk is the perfect place to indulge in fresh seafood delicacies. Take a seat at the local restaurants while immersing yourself in the authentic Maltese coastal ambiance. We can recommend La Nostra Padrona, another charming eatery that captures the essence of Maltese cuisine. They offer an array of traditional dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients. From freshly caught seafood to mouthwatering pastries. The beautiful view and friendly staff ensure a memorable experience, making it a favorite among locals and visitors.

What makes the Blue Grotto of Malta a must-visit natural wonder?

The Blue Grotto of Malta is a mesmerizing natural wonder located on the island’s southern coast. Take a boat trip into the deep blue waters. It is enchanting how the vibrant colors reflect off the grotto’s limestone walls. The interplay of sunlight creates brilliant shades of blue, turquoise, and emerald, leaving visitors in awe. Dive into the crystal-clear waters to explore the intricate rock formations and vibrant marine life. As you emerge, the breathtaking coastal scenery with its dramatic cliffs adds to the grotto’s allure. With its unparalleled beauty, the Blue Grotto stands as Malta’s most popular natural attraction, leaving visitors with lasting memories of this magical place.

Why you should visit Mdina – The Silent City

Situated in the heart of the island of Malta, Mdina, also known as the Silent City, is a captivating destination that transports you back to the medieval era. Enclosed within its ancient walls, this fortified city exudes an air of tranquility and charm. In our opinion, it is one of the highlights of our gay travels to Malta. But firstly, we had to cross a bridge and enter the city’s gates.

travel gay malta

As we wandered through its narrow streets, we encountered grand palaces, centuries-old churches, and enchanting courtyards. After all, Mdina is home to several noble houses, including the island’s oldest titled family, the Barons, who created their home in 1350. With a population of less than three hundred, Mdina maintains a serene and peaceful atmosphere. So don’t forget you’re a guest when you appreciate its historical grandeur and architectural marvels.

We could have spent many more hours among the centuries-old walls of Mdina. But it was time for something sweet!

Where to go for the best tea and sweets in Malta?

For a delightful break on our way back to Valletta we stopped at Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar. Here, we enjoyed tea and sweets at Café Luna. This charming café offers a refined and elegant setting, surrounded by the palazzo’s beautiful gardens.

We fell in love with our cups of rich Maltese tea paired with a selection of mouthwatering pastries handcrafted with care and creativity. After the delicious nibbles, we enjoyed a walk and discovery tour through the lush green gardens.

How to experience the perfect beach day on Malta’s west coast?

We love exploring nature, especially when it is as beautiful as the Maltese coastline. After a local tip, we decided to enjoy the beaches Gnejna and Ghajn on the west coast of the main island. Here, you can rent kayaks with Gnejna Watersports and peddle from Gnejna Beach to Ghajn Beach.

travel gay malta

But first we paddled to the left, exploring the Ta’ Marija Cave. After our little adventure, we took our kayaks over the ocean water to Ghajn Beach. Here we had a fantastic lunch at Signita.

travel gay malta

Does Malta has a gay beach?

On the opposite side of the restaurant, you will find the local spot for guys to hang out and enjoy the crystal clear water. We took our kayaks and crossed the bay (you can also walk along the beach). The beach was bustling because of Pride, but the energy was chill and friendly. We bumped into some of our friends who we hung out with in the water and while sunbathing on our towels. Behind the little beach is this vast area of rocks and cliffs. Many adventurers went exploring and came back later with a smile on their face. All of these things together made this a perfect day in nature on the west coast of Malta.

Now it is time for your adventure in Malta with our Gay Travel Highlights!

EuroPride 2023 took place in Malta from 7th September 2023 to 17th September 2023. It was a big celebration of diversity, equality, and LGBTQ+ rights. As one of the largest LGBTQ+ events in Europe, EuroPride attracts visitors from around the globe. Together, we stand for love, acceptance, and solidarity. The festival featured parades, parties, cultural performances, art exhibitions, and educational forums. One of the highlights was the performance of Christina Aguilera on the main stage after the Pride Parade!

EuroPride Valletta 2023 was an opportunity for the local LGBTQ+ community and allies to showcase their pride, share their stories, and advocate for equality. It created a colorful and inclusive atmosphere, which will hopefully leave a lasting impact on how Malta and its people interact with the LGBTQ+ community and human rights and acceptance of diversity in general.

There is a generation who find you offensive, they are the devoted Catholics and a lot older. The majority of us on the island don't care what your orientation is, you be you and I'll be me, be kind, polite and courteous and you'll be welcome to our island.

Karl Krause

Indeed. No one should be judged by their sexual orientation, gender, gender identity nor religion. Having said that, the laws of Malta are one of the most progressive worldwide when it comes to the LGBTQ+ community. We hope that in the future all people (in Malta or around the world) accept and respect everyone who is different from them. Euro Pride 2023 is, in our opinion, a great step in the right direction - for education, respect, acceptance, and equality beyond legislation. Nevertheless, we had a wonderful time in Malta and cannot wait to be back later this year!

Exploring Malta: The World's Most LGBTQ+ Friendly Destination

ADVERTORIAL

With its dreamy location in the Mediterranean, just off the coast of Italy, its vibrant nightlife, warm weather, and rich history and culture, it's little wonder Malta tops many travel bucket lists in Europe and beyond. Over time, Malta has also become a popular LGBTQ+ destination thanks to its progressive attitudes towards LGBTQ+ rights and its commitment to promoting LGBTQ+ equality, which has not gone unnoticed worldwide.

Malta gay destination 2023

Malta has topped ILGA's annual Rainbow Map  of Europe's most LGBTQ+ friendly countries for seven years running. Most recently, in Spartacus' 2023 Gay Travel Index , Malta was elected the world's most LGBTQ+ friendly country, according to a points-based system. If that's not enough to send you packing your bags, here are other reasons you should absolutely add Malta to your LGBTQ+ travel bucket list.

Malta gay destination 2023

Malta has long enjoyed a history of LGBTQ+ rights, and its legal protections and advancements reflect a growing acceptance and support for the local LGBTQ+ community. Homosexuality was legalized in 1973, before many other progressive countries today. The rise of  The Malta Gay Rights Movement (MGRM) in the 1990s advocated for LGBTQ+ rights and equality, cementing Malta as a safe and welcoming destination for LGBTQ+ travelers. In 2014, Malta legalized Civil Unions between LGBTQ+ couples, which became full marriage equality in 2017.

Malta gay destination 2023

With an open and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ people, it comes as no surprise that Malta offers a larger-than-life LGBTQ+ scene, which attracts LGBTQ+ travelers year round - particularly in its vibrant capital, Valletta. Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to many of the country's most iconic landmarks. The charming city is renowned for its Baroque architecture, visible in ornate buildings, churches, and palaces. Its narrow and winding streets, with colorful balconies and shutters adorning many of the buildings - make it the perfect star of your Insta stories, after you, of course!

Malta gay destination 2023

While there is no designated gay district in Malta, several LGBT+ friendly bars and clubs are scattered throughout the island, particularly in the St. Julian's and Paceville areas. These venues provide a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQ+ locals and visitors to socialize and enjoy the nightlife. Some of the most popular LGBTQ+ friendly bars and clubs in Malta, with a favorite being  Michelangelo Club Lounge . With welcoming locals and a great scene, you're bound to make new friends in no time! If dancing is on the agenda, you should make a beeline for Michelangelo Club Lounge, a state-of-art gay club over two floors. Enjoy a dance floor (naturally!), a lounge area, a  private area, and a great schedule of special events. Lollipop is Malta's biggest organized queer event, taking place at different times throughout the year, so be sure to check their Facebook page for details.

Malta gay destination 2023

One of the highlights of the LGBTQ+ calendar in Malta is the colorful and vibrant Malta Pride Week , which takes place in the island's capital each year in September. Malta's Pride Week features a parade, parties, and cultural events and is a great opportunity to celebrate LGBTQ+ rights and meet other LGBTQ+ travelers and locals. Over the years, Malta Pride has become an essential platform for LGBTQ+ advocacy and community-building. The event has helped raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues and brought people from all walks of life to celebrate diversity and inclusivity.

Malta gay destination 2023

2023 will be a particularly special year for Malta, as it will be hosting EuroPride for the first time. Promoting the apt and relevant mantra of "human rights for everyone, everywhere," this island nation will shine bright in pride spirit, welcoming LGBTQ+ people from around the world. From September 7 to 17, EuroPride 2023 will color the streets of Valletta with a jam-packed program to celebrate love, diversity, inclusion, and of course, pride. Think a Pride Village, an incredible EuroPride march, a  EuroPride concert, loads of parties, LGBTQ+ exhibitions, performances, and more.

Malta gay destination 2023

Even if you can't make Pride season in Malta, there are still loads of other great activities for LGBTQ+ travelers looking to immerse themselves in the local scene. As an island in the Mediterranean, it's no surprise that Malta offers a plethora of gay beaches to drop towels at. Malta has several beaches popular with LGBTQ+ travelers, including St. George's Bay and Golden Bay . These beaches are known for being LGBTQ+ friendly and welcoming to all visitors.

Malta gay destination 2023

St. George's Bay is a small but popular beach and tourist destination located in the town of St. Julian's, on the northeastern coast of Malta. The bay is known for its clear blue water, sandy beach, and for being LGBTQ+ friendly. LGBTQ+ beachgoers should feel comfortable and safe in St. George's Bay and the surrounding area and can expect to find a friendly, inclusive atmosphere in most places. So drop the towel, soak up some Maltese sun, and enjoy connecting with LGBTQ+ locals.

Malta gay destination 2023

The surrounding area of St. George's Bay is lively and offers a range of activities for visitors, including cafes, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. The nearby Paceville district is particularly famous for its nightlife, with many LGBTQ+ clubs and bars staying open late into the night. The bay is also close to several shopping areas and LGBTQ+ accommodations, making it a convenient and popular destination for gay and lesbian travelers.

Malta gay destination 2023

LGBTQ+ travelers visiting Malta should also follow the unique and beautiful Rainbow Street Art Trail. This unique outdoor art exhibition showcases the work of local and international artists who have created colorful and vibrant murals and street art installations with LGBTQ+ themes. The trail winds through the streets of Valletta, Malta's capital city, and is designed to celebrate diversity and promote acceptance and inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community. The Rainbow Street Art Trail was launched in 2019 as part of Malta's Pride Week celebration and has since become a popular attraction for visitors to the city. It is a powerful celebration of diversity and a testament to Malta's commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and equality. It has become a must-see attraction for visitors to Malta, particularly during Pride Week celebrations.

Malta gay destination 2023

With its ongoing commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and thriving scene, Malta is hands-down a favorite destination in Europe for LGBTQ+ travelers to visit year-round. Whether you plan to attend its iconic Pride celebrations in September, meander the ancient streets of Valletta, drop towels at a popular gay beach, or do a bit of everything, Malta offers something for everyone. Gay Friendly Malta

Over the past few years, Malta has experienced a definite and positive shift towards greater cultural acceptance of LGBTIQ in all aspects of life. This has also contributed to make Malta increasingly popular with gay travelers.

Malta has come a long way in a short amount of time - from the decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1973 to enabling same-sex civil unions in 2017. Sex and sexuality taboos in general have dropped over the past 10 years or so, and while the older generations are often still resistant to change, they aren't directly or openly hostile (gender discrimination was banned nationwide in 2004).

A post shared by Gay male Lifestyle in Malta (@gaymalta) on Jul 18, 2017 at 6:12pm PDT

Today, Malta is one of only five countries in the world which has made LGBT rights equal at a constitutional level. The Parliament of Malta unanimously approved a bill which amends the constitution to add protection from any discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. This includes equal opportunities at the workplace.

A post shared by GayGuideMalta (@gayguidemalta) on Jun 11, 2016 at 10:55pm PDT

Of course, with the onset and development of LGBT rights, Malta continues to foster an encouraging impact on LGBT-friendly Malta socially. By 2015, Malta earned a historic first place in the International Lesbian-Gay Association’s Rainbow Europe’s League for LGBT Rights by granting 88 per cent of total rights. In 2006, a mere 18 per cent of the Maltese population were in favour of same-sex marriage, while a poll in 2016 demonstrated that 65 per cent were then in favour.

Still, while the tolerance is there and increasing by the year, many local gay couples still feel discomfort in openly displaying affection in public.

Bars & clubs

Since gay rights and acceptance has increased in recent years, the dedicated gay bar and club scene has actually thinned out. This is most likely due to the fact that all are welcome virtually everywhere, which means that the market for dedicated spots has decreased.

When it comes to particular segments of the LGBTIQ community, such as those who identify as transgender, or those who are more comfortable dressing in drag, it should be noted that it won't go unnoticed. While people - locals and tourists - will still ogle, it's not however considered dangerous to go out on the town cross-dressed or dressed in drag.

Station2Station (S2S) , Lollipop   &   BeatBears present are among Malta’s leading gay party and event organisers, working on creating a vibrant sense of community in Malta. They host special parties throughout the year and rent out clubs, bars and boats to bring the party to the people.

Dedicated LGBT bars & clubs:

Michelangelo Club Lounge, Paceville

Michelangelo Lounge is the latest gay club, spread out over two levels, featuring a state-of-the-art sound system, with a dance floor, lounge bar, chill-out zone and private areas.

9 Reasons Malta Should Be on Your Gay Travel Bucket List

Malta is an archipelago of islands located in the center of the Mediterranean, just south of Sicily and above northern Africa. At just over 400,000 in population and 316 square km, it’s the smallest country in the European Union, but is also considered one of the most densely populated countries in the world. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino which offer amazing sunny weather, attractive beaches, a thriving nightlife and 7,000 years of intriguing history. But besides all the great things to do and see in Malta, the country is incredibly gay-friendly. If you haven’t yet thought about visiting Malta, we’re happy to share 10 reasons why Malta should be on your travel bucket list!

Malta is Gay Friendly!

Malta may not yet be on your travel radar but it’s quickly making a name for itself, particularly for the LGBT community. In just the past couple decades, LGBT rights and protections in the country have been elevated and are considered some of the best in the world. In fact, in October 2015, the European region of IGLA ranked Malta first in terms of LGBT rights out of 49 observed European countries.

TropOut Beach Festival

For the first time, the festival for the modern gay traveler came to Europe on the island of Malta in September 2018. The event is coming back in 2023. Coinciding with Malta EuroPride, this is one long week you won’t want to miss. Since 2016, past events have taken place in Thailand and New Calendonia  and we attended their inaugural  beach festival in Phuket . For Malta, they’ve created a festival that mixes the glamour of the European summer with prime party season – all in a location that will amaze you with its landscapes, history and culture. If you’re seeking an unforgettable Mediterranean experience with like-minded guys, you’ve found it. The week-long events will include accommodation, headline entertainment, transfers and an array of other optional add-ons.

Go for Malta EuroPride

Malta Gay Pride explodes in 2023 as it is the host of EuroPride. This event which takes place annually in one European city is a celebration that moves location each year. Join locals and visitors alike for the Pride in the Heart of the Mediterranean! The theme of 2023 was selected to offer a beacon of hope for neighboring countries and beyond whose communities are still fighting for LGBT acceptance. If you’re attending for TropOut Malta , then it’s the perfect finish and celebration for a week of amazing holidays. The celebrations will include a parade and concert on Saturday afternoon in Valletta, followed by the official pride party expected to take place at Tigullio nightclub.

Game of Thrones

For anyone who’s a Game of Thrones fan, you’ll be pleased to learn that a good portion of season one filming locations were shot it Malta. If you want to visit all the Game of Thrones Malta locations , you can do it pretty easily given to small size of the island. Three amazing locations in particular that you might want to visit are San Anton Palace, Mdina and the Azure Window. The Azure Window was a natural limestone, 28-meter-tall arch that was used for the epic Drogo and Daenerys marriage scene. Sadly, in March 2017 the Azure Window collapsed due to extreme weather and was lost to the sea forever. It’s a reminder that what is here today may be gone tomorrow……and Malta truly is a beautiful island to visit whether you’re a Game of Thrones fan or not.

Valletta, European Capital of Culture

Malta’s capital city was designated the European City of Culture in 2018. Explore the Lascaris War Rooms to understand more about Malta’s role in World War II. Pass by the St John’s Co-Cathedral built by the Knights of Malta in 1573 and marvel at the gorgeous Old Palace Armoury. Be sure to stop into Caffe Cordina and try a famous traditional honey ring. Take the Valletta Coastal Walk around the city walls and then the Sliema ferry across the Marsamxett Harbour for a view of the Game of Thrones filming location, Manoel Island and a different perspective on the city . Wrap up your visit with a Cisk beer or a good Maltese wine in the small but beautiful capital city of Valletta.

Amazing Views at the Upper Barrack Gardens

You can take in an awe-inspiring view of Malta's ‘Three Cities' from the Upper Barrack Gardens in Valletta, which is the highest point in Malta . From this lofty battle point, you can see tiny fishing boats and huge cruise ships floating in the Grand Harbor below. The garden themselves are tranquil and shaded, which makes this an ideal spot to shelter from the midday sun. This is where the knights used to hang out in Malta, and you can see why as the view is spectacular.

Kayaking around Gozo Island is Cool

Malta's weather is good all year-round, so the island makes for a perfect place to participate in some fun outdoor activities. Malta's sister island Gozo has become the expert in adventure sports and you'll have a lot of options to choose from. There are two main kayaking tour companies to show you around the island: ‘Kayak Gozo' and ‘Gozo Adventures' . You can choose between a short paddle along the North Coast of Gozo, or go for a half day, or even a full day trip. The guides are very knowledgeable about the local geography and sea life and will teach you to control your kayak before heading out on the ocean to see the rocky coastline and even a secret cave.

Mdina has Awesome History and Sights

Mdina is a medieval town that was inhabited for over 4,000 years and it was Malta's capital before the arrival of the knights. It's perched on a hilltop and is one of the top places to visit in Malta , with views all over the surrounding countryside, and the town itself is one of those picture-perfect places of twisty backstreets and honey-colored buildings, with great photo opportunities everywhere you look. Mdina is nicknamed the ‘City of Silence', even though if you visit in the morning, when the town is overrun with day trippers, you may be wondering where the name comes from. However, if you decide to spend the night in Mdina, you'll truly get to experience this Medieval town at its best, with its timeless beauty and atmosphere.

A trip to Malta isn’t complete if you haven’t experienced the local food. One of the highlights you can’t miss is Malta’s national snack, the Maltese Pastizzi. Picture a flaky pastry outer layer enclosing a variety of delectable fillings from ricotta, peas, meat or even Nutella. Pastizzis can be found all throughout Malta at specialty shops, coffee shops and most restaurants so you really can’t miss them. As an added bonus, they’re very inexpensive at a Euro or less apiece. Other traditional Maltese dishes that you must try are the national dish of rabbit stew, ratatouille, fish pie, egg and noodle frittata and for dessert, you can’t pass up the kannoli.

Malta, Land of Knights, Sailors and Rainbow Flags

The Mediterranean island nation is gearing up to show off its history of openness, as well as its Baroque treasures, when it hosts EuroPride in September.

An aerial view of a spit of land with water on each side. To the left, a harbor is packed with docked ships, many of them sailboats. The peninsula is loaded with sand-colored stone buildings of five stories or more, and at its tip stands an imposing fortress with stone walls and trees growing on top.

By Alexander Lobrano

I was having a nightcap at the palmy, Art Deco Phoenicia Hotel in Valletta, Malta, when a former British naval officer struck up a chat, quickly confiding in me that he thought Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, was the handsomest man he’d ever seen. The prince and the future monarch spent the early years of their marriage in Malta, the former base of the British Mediterranean fleet, where Philip was posted to a ship.

Malta, the expat explained, had always been “very pleasant ” for gay men. “So many sailors and soldiers,” he said, sipping his drink. “This lovely little island is even better today, though, because now everything’s all out in the open and not only does no one bat an eyelash, it’s just not an issue here anymore.”

Perhaps this attitude explains why Valletta, the tiny capital of the smallest country in the European Union — five islands in the Mediterranean between Sicily and Tunisia, with a population of about 538,000 — will be hosting EuroPride this September. This annual L.G.B.T.Q. event, which began in 1992, is awarded to a different European city every year. Valletta, with only about 6,000 residents, will be the smallest host city to date.

“This celebration is an important opportunity for us to show off why Malta was rated No. 1 by the Rainbow Europe index,” said Toni Attard, the artistic director for Valletta’s EuroPride program. The index is a ranking by ILGA-Europe , a nonprofit organization that monitors the legal and social climate for L.G.B.T.Q. people in 27 E.U. countries.

A tradition of tolerance

I had come to Malta from my home in France for a long weekend to explore what exactly makes it so hospitable to visitors — gay and straight alike.

“Our identity is an amalgam,” Liam Gauci, the curator of the Malta Maritime Museum and one of the island’s most respected historians , told me. “We’re Roman Catholic, but the word for God in Maltese, a Semitic language, is Allah, a reflection of the two centuries the Arabs ruled Malta after invading in 870 A.D. These contradictions make us wryly tolerant of differences, including sexual ones,” he said.

“The church may have frowned on it, but homosexuality was common among ship crews,” Mr. Gauci added. “The Grand Court of Malta even ruled in favor of Rosa Mifsud , a transgender Maltese, who filed a petition in 1744 to be officially recognized as a male.”

When I arrived in Valletta, the apricot-colored sun was just about to sink into the Mediterranean. Inside the town’s stone ramparts, the steep streets were lined with handsome honey-colored stone houses whose balconies recalled the mashrabiya, or screened wooden porches, in the old quarters of Cairo and Tunis.

I stopped at the Casa Rocca Piccola B & B — in a Baroque 16th-century mansion that’s also open to visitors — just long enough to leave my bags. A dinner reservation awaited.

Just a few blocks away, at the Michelin-starred restaurant Noni , Ritienne Brincat, who manages the dining room for her brother, the chef Jonathan Brincat, showed me to a table in a vaulted stone cellar.

Knowing nothing about Maltese food, I assumed it would be a variation on the fare of nearby Sicily. Instead, such dishes as a ruddy fish bouillon seasoned with mandarin orange oil, risotto with local red prawns, and red porgy with stuffed zucchini flowers, sea urchin and a luscious fish-bone-and-citrus sauce revealed an intriguingly refined and umami-rich cuisine.

After dinner, Mr. Brincat offered a primer in Maltese gastronomy. “Our food is a reflection of all of the peoples who ruled us,” he said, explaining that Malta has one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cuisines. “We eat broad beans like the Egyptians and dolmas similar to what you find in Libya. We’ve been cooking with spices like nutmeg and cardamom for centuries, because we were a provisioning stop for ships transporting spices from India and further east to Northern Europe.”

British rule from 1814 to 1964 also left its mark, he said, recalling a favorite childhood dish: a variation of a Bolognese sauce with tomatoes and chopped corned beef, a staple of the British Navy.

Baroque masterworks and neon-lit nightlife

Malta is only 122 square miles, so 72 hours had seemed like an adequate amount of time to explore. But I quickly realized that I’d need at least a week if I wanted to take a ferry to experience the turquoise waters and grilled rock lobster of Gozo , the wild northernmost island of the archipelago. That would have to wait until the next trip.

I decided to check out the main island first, and then Valletta itself after that. The delightful Anna Grech Sant, a local guide, offered an abbreviated but fascinating lesson in Maltese history, richly seasoned with memorable trivia.

One tidbit: “Spiteri” was the name given to the illegitimate children of the Order of Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem — more commonly known as the Knights of Malta — the Catholic military order that ruled Malta for centuries after the Holy Roman emperor Charles V granted them the island in 1530. “Spiteri is also a common surname on Malta today,” Ms. Grech Sant told me with a chuckle.

A 30-minute drive or bus ride from Valletta, Mdina, Malta’s old capital, was built by the Arabs on the site of a former Roman city. Behind its thick stone walls, it’s an elegant Baroque town best visited at night after the crowds of tourists have left.

After crossing a bridge over the bastion of the old fortress, now planted as gardens, we visited the cool, candle-wax-scented 17th-century Cathedral of St. Paul , then stopped in at the Palazzo Falson , a townhouse that’s one of the oldest buildings in Malta. The palazzo — formerly the home of a wealthy collector — displays an impressive array of paintings, furniture, silver, armor, jewelry and coins.

Back in Valletta, the capital since 1571, the nearly 450-year-old cathedral St. John’s “is worth a trip to Malta all on its own,” Ms. Grech Sant explained. From the polychrome marble tombs in the floor of the cathedral’s main apse to squirming gilded cherubim and vast paintings of handsome knights and muscular saints, St. John’s reveals the pulsing intersection between faith and sensuality that is the triumph of Baroque art.

After a visit to the National Museum of Archaeology , which is housed in a magnificent 16th-century former lodge of the Knights of Malta, I cooled off next to the fountain in the Upper Barakka Gardens , one of densely populated Valletta’s favorite green spaces, with sweeping views of the Grand Harbor.

After a packed day, I wanted to save enough energy to sample the nightlife, so I opted for an early dinner of squid ink lasagna with the soft, spicy Calabrian sausage ’nduja, and local rabbit cooked in mustard and tarragon at Grain Street , the casual and more affordable sibling of the Michelin-starred Under Grain .

The pumping nightlife district of Paceville (pronounced Pah-chuh-ville) is in St. Julian’s, a 15-minute ferry trip and a short cab ride away from Valletta. It could have been Hvar, Croatia, or Mykonos: Think crowded terraces with an international crowd of gay and straight revelers sipping giant cocktails with Day-Glo straws, and this summer’s earworm, Kylie Minogue’s “Padam Padam,” permeating the pavement. Paceville looked like it would be a lot of fun around 1 a.m., but it had already been a long day, and a serious cocktail seemed in order.

That was why I ended up at the Phoenicia Hotel’s Club Bar, where my new friend, the former British naval officer, ‌and I leaned into our conversation, and our drinks. “The Maltese are a worldly and open-minded people,” he said, echoing my all-too-brief experience on the island. ‌ “This is why I think the EuroPride in September’s going to be just wonderful, for everyone.”

Where to stay: Casa Rocca Piccola B & B , rooms from 240 euros, or about $260.

Where to eat: Noni (four-course tasting menu €104, five-course tasting menu €125); Grain Street (entrees from €16 to €34).

Places to see: Mdina, St. John’s Co-Cathedral (adults €15), National Museum of Archaeology (adults €5), Upper Barakka Gardens .

Getting around: Malta is served by an extensive network of buses and ferries . Download the Bolt taxi app, too, since it’s what the locals use to avoid driving when they go clubbing. If you have more time and want to visit the island of Gozo, the fast ferry from Valletta takes 45 minutes and costs €7.50 each way.

Malta’s beautiful islands have long prompted territory wars, and some of its temples were built long before Stonehenge or Giza’s pyramids. With some of the most sparkling waters in the world, Malta’s man-made monuments are a complement to these islands’ natural beauty.

Enjoy the beautiful Maltese coastline with its beautiful blue seas, clear skies, and many sea caves. Explore Malta’s baroque capital, Valetta- recognized as the European Capital of Culture in 2018. Visit the Manoel Theater, one of the oldest working theaters in Europe. Relax every day over incredible cuisine and wine at some of Malta’s most famous eateries. Tour the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples, sites that is 5500 years old and theorized to have been built for the worship of a fertility deity. Join the fun as we ride our quad bikes around the beautiful island of Gozo. Sail for a whole day on our private catamaran.

Some of the location shootings for Game of Thrones took place here, as Malta’s capital city is always referred to as a baroque masterpiece. The area’s natural features and its man-made attractions have bolstered travel over the past 20 years in the Maltese Islands, and on this tour, you will enjoy the region’s natural splendors, beautiful lodgings, and incredible cuisine as you peruse Malta’s rich Roman, Arabic and European cultural histories. Even our lodgings pamper us with the best combination of historic details and modern amenities.

Day 1: Arrive in Malta

malta-ma-hetravel-gay-travel-tour-adventure-culture-worldwide-goza

Welcome to Malta! A private transfer will be provided from the airport to the first hotel. This evening we will enjoy our welcome dinner together.

Day 2: Exploring Valetta – the Capital City

malta-ma-hetravel-gay-travel-tour-culture-adventure-goza-sailing

After breakfast, we will explore the famous Baroque capital recognized, in 2018, as the European Capital of Culture. Behind these city gates, there will be historic architecture and culture juxtaposed with contemporary life.

Today will be a full day of exploration. We will visit The Manoel Theater, one of Europe’s oldest working venues. This Baroque gem of a theater has stunning acoustics plus a packed calendar featuring regional and world performances, in both English and Maltese.

Today’s lunch will be at the King’s Own Band Club. A casual, historic setting, this is Valletta’s oldest band club. Enjoy wonderful Maltese lunch and local wine. As you dine, our guide will unravel the unique purposes and rivalries that characterize band clubs.

The afternoon will we awe at the artistic masterpieces found within the St. John’s Co-Cathedral. From its tombstone laid floors, to the vaulted, fresco ceiling depicting the life of John the Baptist.

Enjoy overlooking the Grand Harbor into The Upper Barrakka Gardens. As you stand on the terrace, take a deep breathe as you take in the panoramic view of the Mediterranean’s only natural harbor, framed by the Three Cities.

Day 3: Prehistoric Malta

After a tasty breakfast this morning we will start the day with Lawrence and a falconry experience. He has spent his life working with birds and currently has 11 birds of prey in his care, including various falcons, owls and hawks.

malta-ma-hetravel-gay-travel-tour-culture-adventure-goza-sailing

Next, we will travel back in time, back some 5500 years as we visit the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temple sites. In 1839, excavation started on these religious sites, and scholars then and since theorize that they were built to worship a type of fertility deity (something we don’t hear about too much these days), but these two temples in Malta are dated to 1000 years preceding the pyramids at Giza and Stonehenge.

malta-ma-hetravel-gay-tour-travel-worldside

Later today, we will also enjoy a boat ride through the famous Blue Grotto. This is a series of sea caverns that showcase the area’s beautiful waters and the interplay of dark and light. It’s a refreshing excursion!

The Hypogeum is an amazing underground burial complex. It was in use between 4000 BC and 1500 BC and was among the first Maltese entries on the UNESCO World Heritage List! With only 10 visitors allowed per hour, we will enjoy an unique experience here this afternoon.

Day 4: Mdina The Medieval City

This morning we will go behind the scenes to understand the preservation and the musical beauty within a Maltese Church. Here we will learn the careful revival of the majestic instrument, the pipe organ. Afterwards, we will enjoy a private visit to the Mdina Palazzo. We’ll have the exclusive opportunity to enter one of the palazzo’s to find out that it’s so much more than a home.

Next, we will enjoy a pastizzi-making experience. Enjoy the unique opportunity to learn how to make the coveted pastizzi snack (a meal for some). After watching a demonstration, get in there and try out your newfound skill set.

This afternoon will have us at St. Paul’s Catacombs. Serving as a burial ground during Punic, Roman and Byzantine times, St Paul’s Catacombs represents the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity and Judaism in Malta.

Then onto the Dingli Cliffs! The long stretch of towering limestone cliffs on Malta’s western coast. These are the highest parts of the island. Below the cliffs, farmers have managed to cultivate tiny terraced fields over the centuries.

Day 5: Rural Malta

Enjoy a late start today, before we visit a small rustic farm to see how the prized Maltese cheese called gbejna, is made. Gbejna is typically prepared and served in two forms, fresh and dried, though it can also be cured in salt or covered in pepper. Fresh gbejna tastes like fresh milk and is normally sold in its own whey. To make it, the cheeselets are dried outdoors in special boxes made with screens that allow the wind in while simultaneously shielding the cheese from bugs.

Direct from the farmers and straight to your plate. Enjoy a wonderful farmer’s lunch coupled with an exploration of an olive grove/small farm. You’ll be in one of the most rural areas of Malta – in your own little oasis to enjoy a delectable array of food products and local wine.

 malta-ma-hetravel-gay-tour-travel-worldside

This afternoon, we will jump on a boat that takes us on a 25-minute crossing, from North Malta to the island of Gozo, the second-largest island in the archipelago. If you’ve read Homer’s Odyssey, you’ll know that Gozo has a long association with Ogygia, the island home of the nymph, Calypso.

Day 6: Gozo Island

Today will be spent exploring the sister island of Gozo. Enjoy the Fungus Rock, Dwejra Bay, Wiel Il-Mielah Window, Swejni Salt Pans, Victoria and the Citadel, following up with Ggantija Temples.

We will enjoy a tasty dinner at the water’s edge this evening. Xlendi Bay provides the perfect backdrop to an evening dining experience. Enjoy a stroll along the bay and take it all in.

Day 7: Kayaking and Sailing the Mediterranean

 malta-ma-hetravel-gay-tour-travel-worldside

This morning we will depart from the cozy Hondoq Bay and kayak down the shores towards Qala’s Halfa Rock. We will have stunning views of the salt pans, dating back to Roman times. Take in cool sites like a bat cave as well.

Later today, we will enjoy a catamaran day. After breakfast, we’ll board our vessel for a day of swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing.  We’ll have lunch onboard and in the evening we’ll have our farewell dinner, a special village feast.

LGBT Rights In Malta: Everything You Should Know Before You Visit! 🇲🇹

Cecilia Miller is a lesbian love warrior and educator fighting for queer justice and ensuring every shade of the rainbow shines bright & bold!

LGBT rights in Malta have seen a remarkable evolution over the past years, making it one of the most progressive countries in the world in terms of equality and protection for the local LGBT community and tourists alike. The Maltese government has enacted numerous laws that safeguard the rights of LGBT individuals, including the Gender Identity, Gender Expression, and Sex Characteristics Act. This allows transgender people to change their legal gender without undergoing medical interventions and prohibits surgeries on intersex infants.

While traveling to Malta as an LGBT tourist, it is essential to remain vigilant and informed, as situations can change and vary. Despite the nation’s progressiveness, it is crucial to be aware of potential risks, keeping in mind that some individuals may hold opposing beliefs. Being cautious and obtaining up-to-date advice from reliable sources before planning your travels is highly recommended.

Advocacy groups, such as the Malta LGBTIQ Rights Movement (MGRM) , have been instrumental in achieving this level of acceptance and equality and continue to work for ongoing progress. These organizations are valuable resources for both the local community and LGBT tourists, providing support and further information regarding their rights, safety, and opportunities to engage with others within the community during their stay in Malta .

History Of LGBT Rights In Malta

Malta’s journey towards embracing LGBT rights has been groundbreaking and transformative. The island nation offers a high degree of liberty to its LGBT citizens and topped Europe’s Rainbow Index for LGBTQI+ rights in 2020. This exciting progress shows Malta’s commitment to creating an inclusive society for both its citizens and visitors.

In 2014, Malta introduced civil unions for same-sex couples. This was followed by the historic moment in 2017 when marriage equality was achieved, granting same-sex couples the same rights as heterosexual couples. This rapid progress demonstrates Malta’s passion for promoting equality and its dedication to ensuring that all citizens have access to equal rights and protections under the law.

For local LGBT individuals, as well as tourists, Malta provides a safe and welcoming atmosphere. EuroPride 2023 , one of the largest celebrations of LGBTQ+ rights in Europe, will be hosted by this small island nation, showcasing its commitment to celebrating and promoting inclusivity. Malta’s membership in the European Union has also played an influential role in its advancement of LGBT rights.

Though Malta has achieved significant milestones in recent years, it is always essential to remain vigilant of the potential for situations to change and to understand that there may be bad actors in any country. Seeking current advice before traveling and staying informed on evolving situations is crucial for any traveler.

The Malta LGBTIQ Rights Movement (MGRM), established in 2001, has been a key player in advocating for the rights and well-being of Malta’s LGBTIQ community. MGRM organized the first Pride March in Malta and launched the first national gay helpline in 2004. Engaging with local advocacy groups like MGRM can provide valuable insights and support for anyone seeking further information on LGBT rights in Malta.

In conclusion, Malta’s commitment to LGBT rights has led to significant advancements in recent years, creating a safe and inclusive environment for both local people and tourists. Remember to stay informed, seek advice from trusted sources, and engage with local advocacy groups to ensure a well-informed and enjoyable experience in Malta.

The LGBT Legal Situation In Malta

Over recent years, Malta has made significant strides in legal recognition and protection for the LGBT community, making it a welcoming destination for both locals and tourists. Homosexuality is legal, and same-sex marriage has been recognized in Malta since 2017.

Furthermore, Malta has had no censorship relating to LGBT issues, and it is legal to change one’s gender without surgery being a requirement. Non-binary gender recognition is also acknowledged, and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity is illegal in various aspects, including employment and housing.

However, it is essential to note that situations can change rapidly, and information can sometimes be outdated. It is always prudent to remain vigilant and seek current advice before traveling to any destination. In Malta, as in any other nation, there may still be bad actors who do not respect the rights and protections of everyone. Staying informed and prepared is crucial to safeguard oneself and ensure a positive experience.

LGBT advocacy groups, such as the Malta Gay Rights Movement (MGRM), work diligently to combat discrimination and promote equal rights for the LGBT community. They are reliable sources of information and support for anyone seeking advice on how to navigate potential challenges they may encounter while visiting or living in Malta.

In summary, Malta has earned a reputation as one of the most progressive countries in Europe when it comes to LGBT rights. Exciting strides have been made in the legal landscape, benefiting both the local population and tourists. However, it is vital to stay informed, remain vigilant, and consult with relevant advocacy groups to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

The LGBT Social Situation In Malta

Malta has emerged as a leader in LGBT rights, with some of the most progressive laws in the world. The island nation enjoys a strong commitment to promoting equality, resulting in a generally positive social climate for the LGBT community. As a result, both local people and tourists can frequently experience an inclusive and accepting atmosphere.

However, it is essential to approach this topic with caution and vigilance, as situations can change rapidly, and not every individual will hold the same open-mindedness. It is crucial to remain updated with the current social context and to seek the latest information before traveling. Stay aware of the fact that there will always be bad actors in every country, so staying vigilant is vital.

LGBT individuals are well-protected under Maltese law. Transgender and intersex rights, in particular, are of the highest standard due to the Gender Identity, Gender Expression And Sex Characteristics Act . This legislation allows transgender people to change their legal gender without medical interventions and prohibits surgeries on intersex infants.

While Malta’s legal framework regarding LGBT rights is commendable, some steps can be taken to further protect individuals if necessary. For instance, having a confidential support network with family, friends, or colleagues could prove beneficial in times of need. Additionally, staying informed about any potential risks and incidents can help avoid problematic situations.

Numerous LGBT advocacy groups, such as Rainbow Europe , work actively in Malta. These organizations aim to promote equality and provide support to the local LGBT community. Connecting with such groups can provide valuable information and resources to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in Malta.

Remember, it is always essential to stay informed, act with caution, and remain vigilant while enjoying the beautiful island of Malta. After all, an unforgettable and welcoming experience awaits those who choose to explore all that this unique nation has to offer.

Trans Rights In Malta

Malta has proven itself to be a progressive and welcoming country regarding transgender rights. The Gender Identity, Gender Expression, and Sex Characteristics Act allows transgender individuals to change their legal gender without any medical interventions. This progressive legislation sets Malta apart as a forerunner in the global fight for transgender rights.

In addition to these legal protections for transgender individuals, Malta also has specific protections in place for intersex people. The country has banned non-consensual cosmetic surgeries on intersex infants, ensuring that these children grow up free from discrimination and invasive medical procedures that might otherwise be forced upon them.

While Malta has taken significant steps to protect the rights of transgender and intersex individuals, it’s essential to remember that the situation can change and that bad actors can exist in any location. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, always remain vigilant and be sure to keep up-to-date with current information. If you’re visiting Malta as a tourist, seeking advice from local LGBTQ+ advocacy groups is a great way to ensure that you’re well-informed and protected throughout your stay.

Excitingly, the Parliament of Malta has unanimously approved a bill amending the constitution to protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This bill has led to increased equal opportunities for Maltese individuals in the workplace. Some of the local organizations advocating for LGBTQ+ rights include the Human Rights Watch’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights Program , as well as various local LGBTQ+ support groups and organizations.

Remember, situations can change quickly, and it’s crucial to seek current advice before traveling. The incredible progress Malta has made in recent years regarding LGBTQ+ rights creates an exciting environment for locals and tourists alike. So pack your bags and enjoy this inclusive destination, but remain cautious and well-informed to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Trans Rights In Malta

The Future For The Queer Community In Malta

As Malta continues to progress in the realm of LGBT rights, the future looks bright for both locals and tourists alike. The country has witnessed a significant increase in support for same-sex marriage, with 67% of the population voicing their approval and 73% believing that gay, lesbian, and bisexual people should enjoy the same rights as heterosexual individuals.

The Maltese government has demonstrated its commitment to advancing LGBTIQ+ rights by launching a comprehensive strategy and action plan. This plan indicates a more equal and inclusive future for all citizens, emphasizing the country’s desire to create a welcoming and accepting environment for everyone.

For LGBT tourists, Malta offers a safe and friendly destination where they can enjoy their time without fear of discrimination. However, it’s essential to remain vigilant and stay updated on the latest information, as situations can change rapidly. LGBT travelers should always be cautious and aware of potential bad actors, even in the most progressive countries.

To ensure the protection and well-being of LGBT individuals, a possible course of action could include continued collaboration with local and international advocacy groups. This partnership would aid in promoting awareness, education, and advancements in LGBT rights.

Some of the prominent LGBT advocacy groups in Malta include the Malta Gay Rights Movement (MGRM) and the newly formed Rainbow Europe. These organizations work to protect and promote LGBT rights, both on a local and international level.

In conclusion, Malta’s future for LGBT rights appears promising. The country is committed to working towards a more inclusive and tolerant society, benefiting both local residents and tourists alike. Stay informed and seek current advice before traveling, as conditions can change quickly. Remember to enjoy the exciting progress while remaining vigilant, as the journey towards full equality is ongoing.

Protect Yourself While Travelling In Gay Malta

In Malta, LGBT rights are well implemented and respected, both for local people and tourists. Despite being located near more conservative countries, Malta stands out as being very progressive. The country’s legal framework is among the most advanced in the world in terms of providing legal recognition and rights for gay people, as well as adopting policies that eliminate discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals based on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics.

However, it’s essential to remain vigilant while visiting any country, as there can always be bad actors or unforeseen situations. To protect yourself in Malta, constantly seek updated and accurate information before planning your trip or venturing out within the country. LGBT rights and protections can change, although, in Malta, they are generally improving.

Keeping in touch with local LGBT advocacy groups, such as the Malta LGBTIQ Rights Movement (MGRM) can be helpful in staying informed of current events and changes that might impact your overall experience. These organizations work hard to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone in Malta, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, sex characteristics, and expression.

Remember that general safety measures should be followed whether you’re a local or a visitor. Stick to well-lit, busy streets at night, use caution when engaging with strangers, and be mindful of your surroundings.

Experiencing Malta as an LGBT person or visitor can be enjoyable and liberating. The progressive nature of the country’s legal system and the widespread acceptance of LGBT rights make it a welcoming destination. Stay informed, be cautious, and enjoy your time in this wonderfully inclusive Mediterranean island nation.

Gabriel Goldberg | Courtesy of VACAYA

Founded by avid travelers Randle Roper, Patrick Gunn and John Finen, VACAYA bills itself as the first all-LGBT travel company in the full-ship charter/resort buyout sector of the travel industry to launch in more than 25 years.

"[VACAYA] was sparked by our own vacations, where we all had encountered two very different experiences," says Gunn. "The all-gay cruises were liberating, empowering and fun, but limited to a small spectrum of people. And while everyone loves a good time, there's more to a memorable vacation than just parties. Mainstream vacations offered more activities and destinations, and were accessible to a diverse set of people, but didn't always feel like a friendly, judgment-free environment."

As such, VACAYA set out to bring LGBTQ travelers from across the spectrum together in a welcoming, inclusive setting, while offering varied onboard activities and immersive itinerary options. Cruisers will enjoy traveling to ports around the world, in the Caribbean , the Galápagos, Europe , Antarctica and more. You can participate in shipwide events ranging from themed deck parties to performances by LGBTQ entertainers to rejuvenating yoga classes. Note that VACAYA's cruises are for adults only.

Previous cruisers had abundant praise for VACAYA's voyages, highlighting the company's responsiveness when booking and the kindhearted staff, as well as the genuine connections they made with other passengers on board. The Virgin brand has long been known for its celebration of the LGBTQ community, and cruise line Virgin Voyages is no different. The strictly adults-only cruise operator aims to provide a unique experience, with onboard tattoo parlors, impressive live entertainment, and dining options that include more than 20 eateries and menus created by Michelin star chefs. This line gets the stamp of approval from previous LGBTQ cruisers, who praise the ships' gender-neutral bathrooms, diverse staff and onboard shows with resident drag queens.

Virgin Voyages offers gay-specific sailings through travel companies like Atlantis Events, but its more mainstream itineraries still offer a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that attracts LGBTQ cruisers year-round. Virgin hosts a number of events during Pride Month each year, including deck parties and interactive social media campaigns.

"Each June here at Virgin Voyages, we like to go big for Pride Month with larger-than-life events … all monthlong," the cruise line says in a statement on its website. "It's an important time for us – both internally within our crew and for our sailors – to honor and celebrate the LGBTQ community; who for so long has had to continually fight for equality and the right to be seen, heard and included."

Virgin Voyages sails to a variety of LGBTQ-friendly countries, including New Zealand, Greece and Spain. In June 2024, consider a seven-night sailing aboard Scarlet Lady departing from Barcelona with stops in Marseille and Cannes in France as well as Spain's Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza.

For its all-gay cruises, Atlantis charters megaships from popular lines like Royal Caribbean International , Norwegian Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages in addition to smaller vessels with companies like Oceania Cruises so cruisers will have a fully immersive experience.

On board, travelers can enjoy all the perks these ships have to offer (think: pools, hot tubs, sports courts and plenty of dining choices), plus special events like drag performances, motivational speakers, LGBTQ movies on demand in each cabin and high-energy circuit parties across the ship.

"As an LGBTQ cruiser, you're looking for a ship with lots of entertainment, including dance parties and events," says Marcos Martinez, founder of Men Who Brunch, a Black gay lifestyle blog. "One of the best cruise [lines] for gay cruising is Atlantis, since you'll be able to meet hundreds of attractive men and party all day and night on the ship."

Atlantis hosts primarily gay men; women make up about 5% to 10% of bookings, according to the Atlantis website. Previous cruisers said the atmosphere on board was fun, friendly and welcoming, though some noted that the company's customer service could be better, especially when it comes to details about the cruise.

Due to the company's popularity, its three 2024 cruises are already sold out.

Past guests recommend choosing Brand g if you're looking for a well-planned, relaxed and luxurious experience over a busier, more party-heavy vacation.

Celebrity Cruises sets the scene for an excellent vacation for gay travelers, from its extravagant annual Pride parties to its daily LGBTQ programming throughout the year. The mainstream line has received numerous awards for its inclusivity, receiving accolades from the Cruizie Awards, TTG Travel Awards and Travel Weekly's Magellan Awards for being one of the best cruise lines for LGBTQ passengers.

LGBTQ cruisers can start their vacations off on a high note with a special welcome party on the first night of their voyage to meet other travelers on board. After night one, there are other social events for gay cruisers to party and hang out together. Additionally, Celebrity Cruises was the first cruise line to legally marry a couple at sea in 2018, and it continues to perform same-sex marriages on its ships.

Past cruisers enjoyed their voyages with Celebrity, noting that the line was welcoming, the food was delicious, and there were plenty of areas to hang out as a group with fellow LGBTQ passengers or other companions throughout the ship.

Although all itineraries are gay-friendly, consider booking a sailing during Pride Month in June for an extra special experience. Onboard entertainment during this month includes guest entertainers, a flag raising ceremony, Celebrity's signature Pride Party at Sea and more. The Italian Riviera & France cruise will depart from Barcelona on June 8, 2024, on the new Celebrity Ascent; this 10-night Mediterranean sailing stops at ports in France, Italy and Malta. Private travel companies like VACAYA also charter Celebrity ships for all-gay voyages throughout the year.

Royal Caribbean International provides a welcoming and inclusive experience for LGBTQ travelers. The popular cruise line frequently partners with Atlantis Events to offer all-gay voyages throughout the year, but even the standard sailings earn praise.

Highlights of the sailings are the ships' entertainment options (including the Tony Award-winning musical "Mamma Mia!") and attentive staff, according to past cruisers. Itineraries typically include LGBTQ meetups at the beginning of each cruise for gay travelers to meet like-minded passengers. Outside of the sailing experience, Royal Caribbean has also publicly committed to supporting the LGBTQ community throughout the year, and it was the first cruise line to earn the title "Gay Traveler Approved" from GayTravel in 2016.

In 2024, consider a Royal Caribbean voyage that sails to gay-friendly destinations. "Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, [is] full of gay bars, clubs and gay beaches," says Martinez. Hop aboard Navigator of the Seas in May for a seven-night sailing round-trip from Los Angeles that stops in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Ensenada, Mexico. Source Journeys is also offering a seven-night river cruise through Burgundy and Provence, France, in June on Avalon Waterways' Avalon Poetry II, as well as a seven-night voyage from Venice along the Dalmatian Coast. Frequently Asked Questions

When it comes to gay cruising, gone are the days of discreet "Friends of Dorothy" meetups. The term – a euphemism that dates back to the 1950s – was once used to indicate gay social events on daily cruise line programs, without explicitly calling out members of the community on board. It's a far cry from today's LGBTQ cruising industry, which loudly and proudly celebrates passengers from all walks of life.

According to experts, LGBTQ cruising is a market that will only continue to grow. Travelers can take their pick between cruise operators tailored specifically to queer communities and major cruise lines that offer festive Pride celebrations and inclusive onboard entertainment. As travel on the high seas continues to grow in popularity for vacationers, gay and lesbian travelers should consider setting sail on a fun-filled cruise vacation for their next trip.

When planning a cruise, vacationers should first consider what their ideal sailing looks like.

Gay-friendly vs. all-gay sailings: Cruisers should think about whether they'd like to travel aboard a gay-friendly mainstream line – such as Celebrity Cruises or Virgin Voyages – or opt for an all-gay, full-ship charter with a third-party vacation company.

"Each and every LGBTQIAPK person has a different level of comfortability in their 'outness,' " says Patrick Gunn, co-founder and chief marketing officer of LGBTQ vacation company VACAYA. Of VACAYA's all-gay charters, he adds, "For one magical week, our community gets to be the majority and live life out loud in the blissful utopia VACAYA creates on a gay cruise. That single change from being an always-minority to a sudden majority can have a profoundly positive real-world effect on individuals."

  • Travel style: Some cruise operators (think: Atlantis Events and La Demence) are known for their electrifying all-night parties, which may be perfect for gay groups of friends. Meanwhile, other companies like VACAYA and Olivia look to provide a more diverse selection of activities, ranging from tea dances (LGBTQ parties that, historically, included tea service) to philanthropic service activities to immersive onshore experiences.
  • Ports of call: Some of the most LGBTQ- and gay-friendly destinations for cruises include: Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Sydney; Barcelona, Spain; Taipei (Keelung), Taiwan; Helsinki; Quebec City; Auckland, New Zealand; Mykonos, Greece; Reykjavik, Iceland; Amsterdam; Tel Aviv, Israel; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and San Francisco. Countries that gay travelers may want to avoid include the Maldives, Jamaica, Morocco, Malaysia and Haiti, as homosexuality is illegal in these destinations.

The 9 Best Gay Cruises for 2024 (+ Planning Tips)

W hether you are looking to hop aboard a Pride Week cruise with a major line or sail away with a smaller company that specializes in LGBTQ voyages, the following cruise operators promise a fun, safe and memorable vacation.

(Note: While many of these cruise lines sail to LGBTQ-friendly ports of call, travelers should research destinations to learn more about cultures, customs and safety in each location and determine what's right for them.)

Many were also impressed by the events and entertainment options throughout their sailings.

In 2024, VACAYA will offer a number of voyages worldwide. The seven-night Caribbean Cruise on Celebrity Apex in February will sail round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, with several fun-filled days at sea in addition to stops in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Antigua.
