Best World Map with Pins for Travellers at Home

As travellers, we’re always seeking to bring a slice of our adventures, experiences, and ultimately our memories home.  We do it by collecting things like magnets and pins, and we also trinkets small  and large to display proudly at home.  One way of bringing the world home is by putting up a large world map with pins as a great way to visualize everywhere that you’ve been and everywhere that you still want to go.

While you’d think that there are many options out there, they’re more elusive than you think.  To make your choice easier, I’ve organized the top world map with pins products out on the market today.

Why pins?   You might be wondering why pins specifically?  Yes, I recognize that there are regular maps that you can purchase and the ones that you can scratch off as you travel.  These are a fun way to start but I think ultimately they’re not the display piece you ultimately want to display at home.

With regular maps, you can’t pin anything on it unless you’re fine with a cluster of holes on your wall.  With the Scratch the World Travel Map, it’s actually more difficult to scratch the map cleanly and you’re kind of limited to scratching out countries as opposed to marking somewhere specific or perhaps marking places differently based on where you’ve been and where you want to go.

The two best market places to find these are either in a commercial market place such as Amazon or in the artisan space of Etsy.  I’ll provide examples of high quality products from both sides and a few others vendors that are a bit more difficult to find.

If you’re looking for a high-quality, detailed, framed map, look no further than Pin Adventure Map . I recently upgraded from my old Palomar Pin World (see below) to this one in my home office and I am impressed with how well-built and designed this world map with pins is. It looks absolutely stunning.

The specific one that we have is the Framed World Map with Push Pins in Glacier with a Wedgewood French Cottage frame. That said, there are so many different designs to choose from.

travel map with pins for home

First, let’s talk about the map quality itself. I am blown away by how high of a resolution this print it. As you run your fingers through the map, it’s completely smooth and even when you put your nose right up to it, you don’t see any ink dot-type pixellation.

Make no mistake, this is a geographically accurate and up-to-date world political map that was designed in partnership with a professional cartographer. I love how it not only marks countries, states, capitals, and major cities, they also highlight lakes, rivers, tallest mountains, and even special locations such as Challenger Deep. You’ll also find accurate mapping of the ocean depth.

Next, you’ll find the Glacier model to be just visually stunning especially after you start pinning locations with the coloured push pins that are included. It adds another dimension to the artwork, and there’s something about that hue of the ocean blue against the grey and white that looks so modern and slick. I also love the Wedegwood French Cottage frame that I picked which adds a rustic and textured feel to it and has its own blue threaded into the wood.

You’ll notice as well that I’ve been able to customize the map. This is part of their personalization service. You can ask them to use one of their preset designs but if you have a special request, don’t hesitate to ask. That’s how I was able to get the Going Awesome Places logo on there!

Lastly, the ordering process was a cinch. Pin Adventures ‘ customer service is friendly and swift. I also loved how they provided previews of the map for approval before printing it.

Pin Adventure Map is a member of 1% For The Planet Movement .

TIP: Even at the 40″ x 53″ (100 cm x 135 cm) size, it is incredibly light and since it only comes with two hanging brackets on either end, tie a metal wire in between them so all you have to do is use one of these nifty picture frame hangers on your wall. It can definitely support its weight.

BUY FROM PIN ADVENTURE MAP

wood world map with pins in living room

For the last one in this list of world maps with pins, I present to you a map that’s not constrained to paper.  This world map is constructed by wood and creates a 3D jigsaw of countries where you can insert your own airplane pins for all the places that you’ve been.

wood wall map with pins close up

If you’re looking for a travel statement piece at home, this is it.  The vendor, Enjoy The Wood , on Etsy makes this completely out of birchwood plywood and is so serious about it that they even have a patent for its design.

They’ve gotten so big that they also sell directly on their own website as well .

Depending on where you want to put this in the house or office, you’ll have plenty of sizes to choose from including your choice of a map without names and borders, capitals identified or without.

At first, I thought there’d be no ways that pins could be involved but due to the softness of the wood, they’re actually designed with them in mind.  That’s why you can order these with your choice of either 30 airplanes, 60 airplanes, or country flag pins.  Double-sided tape is included to help mount the wooden map onto your wall.

Use our link below and code WILLIAMTANGUP to get 10% off. You’ll also get a free Wooden Flag Push Pin pack with every order.

Price: Medium starts at $96.50 USD, Large starts at $197.50 USD, XL starts at $298.50 USD, and XXL starts at $497.50 USD.

Sizes: Medium (100 cm x 60 cm / 39″ x 24″), Large (150 cm x 90 cm / 59″ x 35″), XL (200 cm x 120 cm / 79″ x 47″), XXL (300 cm x 175 cm / 118″ x 69″)

Other options:  Beyond the sizes you can choose the 3 different styles of map (completely not labelled, country labelled, or country labelled with capitals identified).  You can also choose what pin package you want (30 airplanes, 60 airplanes, or country flags).  Languages can be customized as well

Material and process:  Wood carved and engraved

  • Wood material is durable and strong
  • Natural 3D effect that really makes the map pop especially with the different depths and colored wood
  • A WOW item to display in any room
  • Since this is a large product, you do have to be careful about customs and duties but the sellers are very transparent about this
  • Pins on the wooden map are permanent so you do have to be careful about your choices
  • Lots of double-sided tape required to mount onto the wall
  • More installation work required since you have to install pieces one at a time like a puzzle

Alternatives:

  • Slightly different wood-based design but also quite beautiful 3D wood world maps

BUY THE 3D WOOD MAP (Coupon Code Automatically Applied)

hand drawn water color world map with pins

This is a beautiful printing of a hand-drawn rendition of the world map that has a gentle water color quality to it.  Printed on smooth matte paper and mounted onto a thick cork backing, this is the kind of world map with pin that you’d be proud to display at home.  You can either frame them or hang them as they are.

These are handmade from Montreal, Canada by the Etsy vendor BalticClub .  The also come with 50 black pins and a few colored ones.

Price: Small $56.22 USD, Regular $104.95 USD, Large $172.41 USD

palomar pinworld wall world map with pins

This one is elusively difficult to buy especially in North America.  I ended up purchasing this in the Netherlands in one of those fun art gallery stores that you can find in Europe.

palomar pinworld close up

The Palomar PinWorld (now rebranded to Palomar DearWorld ) is designed specifically to be a wall map diary.  When I saw this tag-line, I knew immediately that this was the one I was looking for.  This is a screen-printed map on coloured felt.  It has a simple and modern aesthetic that I know many of you will like.

I have this mounted with double-sided tape in my office and have since purchased additional pins as well.  I love the look of this map because they use a felt material instead of cork which gives it a different look.  I also love Palomar’s custom pins which actually resemble destination pin markers that you find on say, Google Maps, and other mapping tools.

They have many authorized resellers around the world but chances are you’re not close to one.  Your best bet is to pick this up from a reseller on Amazon .   Another store that sells this is A Touch of Modern .  You can also search for the term “Palomar – Pin World Map” for more targeted results.

For additional pins, I oddly had luck at a local art store so definitely search around.

Price: $98.58 USD Standard, $44.50 USD Mini

Sizes:  Standard (124 cm x66 cm / 29″x 26″), Mini (77 cm x 48 cm / 30″ x 19″), XL (198 cm x 124 cm / 78″ x 49″)

Other options:  Comes in Black or Light Blue

Material and process:  Felt, screen-printed

  • Unique design that has not been replicated by any other companies or Etsy creators
  • Beautiful pins and simply screen-printed design
  • Felt material means that you don’t need to be that careful pinning because they don’t leave visible holes afterwards
  • Love that the felt works with velcro which makes mounting quite easy
  • Limited colours (Black and blue)
  • Pins are difficult find when you need more
  • If you mount with Command Picture Hanging Strips as I have, you’ll notice that it droops and flares out in certain areas so it doesn’t sit perfectly flush
  • There are some strange spelling errors such as Adis Abeba for Addis Ababa.
  • Felt backing means that you need to insert the pins on an angle

BUY PALOMAR PINWORLD

canvasvows world map with pins on canvas

The beauty with purchasing from vendors from Etsy is that you have much more customization and personalization options than if you were to buy it from a store.  This product is by CanvasVows and they offer a canvas-based world map with pins.  While the base map remains the same, you have the opportunity to change:

  • Text that appears on the map (names and/or quotes)
  • Background color
  • Map type – world or country
  • Push pin colors

The product comes with 100 pins and is ready to mount.  They also create two digital proofs for approval.

Sizes:  Small ( 40.6 cm x 76.2 cm / 16″x30″),  Medium (50.8 cm x 101.6 cm / 20″x40″),  Large (61 cm x 122 cm / 24″x48″, Extra Large (76.2 cm x 152.4 cm / 30″x60″)

Material and process:  Canvas printed

  • Many customization options
  • Standard push pins are used and easily obtained if you need more
  • As a canvas, there are many sizes available including larger formats
  • Canvas provides a premium textured feel
  • Durable print
  • There are customization limitations including the font and size of country names
  • Canvas mount means that there won’t be a solid backing for the pins to go on
  • Pin holes created are permanent so you will need to do this carefully
  • Digital files for the customization
  • Paper prints (not mounted on canvas)

BUY CANVASVOWS

push pin travel world map on canvas

If you’re looking for a framed look, this is an excellent option to give it that polished look in whichever room you decide to hang this in.  This takes advantage of the canvas print but takes it to the next step of mounting it in a wooden frame.  Another thing to pay attention to this map is that it is a more accurate and detailed map compared to the others.  Where others aren’t very detailed, this is one that looks to be straight from the atlas

push pin travel maps canvas with background

Despite this being a product sold on Amazon , they also offer customization options.  You can choose what type of wood frame you want and you can design the map with an option pin legend and personalized text.

The map comes with 100 push pins (a mix of red, white, and black).   It also comes with wire hanging kit so it is wall-ready

Price: $189.99 USD

Sizes: 100.3 cm x 69.9 cm / 39.5″ x 27.5″ (width x height)

Other options:  Wood frame colour (6 colours to choose from)

Material and process:  Canvas printed and dry mounted to foamcore board

  • High quality and durable printing on Canvas
  • Detailed map
  • Lacking of different map designs to choose from
  • One size only
  • Beyond this product, they actually have a really extensive set of products that vary from map, mounting-style, and print-style
  • They also sell 3-Panel Canvas Wraps , Full Canvas Wraps (but not framed), and Framed Paper Maps
  • It looks like they have an Etsy store with even more selection.

BUY PUSH PIN TRAVEL MAPS

world map with pins cork board kit

If you’re looking for a more comprehensive kit, this cork board world map with pins is an excellent choice.  From a style perspective simple with a screen-printed map on a cork board but what I like about it is that it’s framed so it’s easy to mount on the wall and it comes with a collection of custom pins that allows you to tell your own story when it comes to your world map diary of your travels.  There are 3 packs of flags that you stick around metal pins – one for flags, a second one for monuments, and another foods of the world.

The World Map Cork Board Kit comes in either black or white and two large-format sizes.  The pin kit includes 194 different country flags with 100 sticks, 64 food stickers, and double-sided tape hangers for an easy installation.

Price: XL $87.97 USD, L $44.97

Sizes: XL (60 cm x 90 cm / 23.6″ x 35.4″), L (45 cm x 60cm / 17.7″ x 23.6″)

Other options:  Black or white color, and framed or not framed (framed option only for XL size)

Material and process:   Map screen printed on sustainable cork oak forest from Portugal

  • Screen printing on cork is more forgiving allowing you to pin around without worry of leaving holes behind
  • Lots of space on the cork for creative pinning to be able to tell your travel story
  • Print on cork may not be as durable
  • The adhesive provided for mounting non-framed map is not recommended
  • There will naturally be a limitation of the number of pins in the kit so once you run out, you’ll have to use alternative pins
  • Not customizable
  • There is a different design available that looks more like a Magellan explorer map of old
  • They also have a map that is USA specific

BUY THE KIT

burlap world map close up with red pins

Material and process:   Screen printed on burlap with laminated backing and mounted on 1/4″ corkwood backing

  • With the burlap material, you won’t have to worry about leaving leaving permanent holes on the pin
  • Customization possibilities in the text
  • Most cute and rustic out of the whole group
  • This is a small map compared to the others here
  • Due to the smaller size, smaller pins are required and may look very clustered if you have travelled to many destinations
  • Map is missing Antarctica
  • Burlap material is laminated but over time may show some wear and fraying of fabric if manipulated frequently

BUY THE BURLAP MAP

boldtuesday peel off world map on etsy

We’ve all seen the scratch off world maps and the reason why I haven’t included any so far in this list is because they don’t have come with any pins.

travel map with pins for home

I’ve added this one by BoldTuesday as a bonus feature because I really love the minimalistic look to this world map and the fact that it’s a peel off vinyl sticker which is so much easier (and much cleaner).

To turn this into a map with pins, all you have to do is get a little creative and pick up one of these map pointer vinyl stickers which will most certainly pop from the black.

Price: Poster-only is $44.30 USD, Poster with Hanger is $63.21 USD.

Sizes: One size: 70 x 50 cm (28″ x 20″)

Other options:  None

Material and process:  3M matte, quality vinyl

  • Minimalist look that easily matches all types of decor
  • Peel off vinyl stickers for countries visited
  • Mounting kit with the hanger is convenient and clean
  • No mess when peeling off countries compared to scratch off maps
  • Secondarily, you can store all of your peeled off/visited countries in a diary or separate booklet (not included)
  • No built-in or included pins (need to purchase separately )
  • As with other maps, small countries (i.e. Pacific Islands) will not be marked/peelable
  • Only one color (black/white)
  • Only one of its kind so far.

BUY THE PEEL OFF MAP

These are my top 5 tips for pinning your map based on my experience with the Palomar PinWorld and Pin Adventure Map .

  • Think carefully about where you want to mount/hang your world map
  • Before you start, have a plan for how you want to pin the map – Will you have a different pin colour to identify which family member has been where?  Will you differentiate between where you have been and where you want to go? Will you mark cities, or just countries?
  • For the maps with materials where pins are more permanent, make sure you pin carefully
  • Stay up to date!  It’s easy to forget to do this once it’s up on the wall.  Every once in awhile, find out where you’re able to add more pins
  • Get creative with your map.  You’ll be using a ton of push pins but what about using other types of pins or perhaps creating something on your own?

The more you travel, the faster you’ll run out of pins.  When that happens, you’ll want to have these handy links ready so you can stock up.

  • 100 Assorted colours round push pins   – These are the AmazonBasics versions that come in a pack of 100
  • 600 assorted push pins – Best value price out of this entire lot
  • 300 map push pins – The same style of pins but just more quantity and you can pick any 3 colors you want
  • Metal airplane push pins – These are from the wooden world maps but could be used for any map
  • White metal airplane push pins – Push pins in the shape of paper planes in white
  • Metallic bead head push pins – For a more glam look to your pins, you can grab this pack of 800 that will be sure to last you awhile
  • Gold push pins – Add a splash of gold to your maps

The Pin Adventure Map makes an excellent gift with their gift wrapping and customization options.

Maps come with a limited number of push pins to start but since most of them use standard circular pins , they’re easy to find online when you need more. The only exception is the Palomar PinWorld which has their own custom designed pins.

Many of these maps can be personalized and customized for display in your home or use in special events such as weddings. These will come at a small extra fee. Good examples of customizable ones are Pin Adventure Map , CanvasVows , Push Pin Travel Maps , and Burlap World Map .

The only map that is completely geographically accurate are the ones by Pin Adventure Map . The larger the map, the more detail they can put in as well. Others are mostly country-based outlines and high-level markings.

I’d love to hear about your experiences with world maps with pins.  Have you find a different one not on this list that you’re really happy with? How have you creatively set them up?  Leave a comment below to share.

Your Guide to Samara Beach, Costa Rica

Pin this post for later!

Calling all beach bums!

Situated along Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast along the Nicoya Peninsula, Samara is a little-known gem that should definitely be on your radar. This idyllic town is mainly known for its beach, conveniently located right along the downtown area.

I won’t lie to you—there’s not much to do here, but that’s not a bad thing! If a relaxing beach getaway is your vibe, add Samara to your itinerary. There are a few things to do in Samara besides lazing in the sun and sand too, so let’s get to it…

Table of Contents

Bumming on the beach is definitely one of the most popular things to do in Samara—Shocker! The town sits in a protected cove, which means the water is calm and the wind is minimal. These are perfect conditions for swimming, sunbathing, or trying your hand at some water sports.

A surfer walking along Samara beach at golden hour.

You can bring your own beach gear or sidle up to one of the beach clubs and rent a sun lounger and umbrella. There are a few beach clubs to choose from, and you’ll find cocktails and food wherever you park your bum.

I preferred to find my own slice of sand as there is plenty. The beach is pretty long, and the further left or right you walk, the fewer people you’ll encounter.

A small boat and palm trees on Samara Beach.

Of course, the main part of the beach that is easily accessible from town will be the most bustling but nothing ever felt crowded. Not to mention it’s surely convenient that you can munch down lunch and rent a surfboard all within seconds of each other.

Samara Beach is long and white, and while the waters are chill, they are surfable! Speaking of…

Even if you’ve never tried surfing, the easy waves at Samara Beach make it the perfect spot for beginners. You’ll find several outfitters right along the beach, many of which offer lessons for riders of all skill levels. Some spots also offer other water equipment like SUPs if surfing isn’t your jam.

Lots of people surfing at Samara beach.

I rented a surfboard from Pato’s Surf School, which couldn’t have a better location on Samara Beach. They were super nice and easygoing, with a wide selection of all types of boards.

If you’re learning or are a very beginner, this beach is PERFECT. It’s very calm and safe here to learn with its gentle waves and beach break.

However, if you’ve been surfing and you’re not really a beginner anymore (like me!), you might find the waves a bit too calm. It’s still great for a day of fun surfing, though, and I’m glad I went out. It was almost weird wishing for bigger waves since I was out there solo, and I’m regularly a tiny bit scared of bigger waves!

People working at Tico's Surf School at Samara beach.

Do note that you should only head out at high tide if you want to catch some waves, as low tide at Samara Beach is totally flat. Here’s the current tide schedule for Samara Beach.

As I mentioned, the beach is really the main draw here. While you won’t be gaping at grandiose architecture or partying at all-night clubs (I’m not complaining), there are a few things to do in downtown Sarama.

A couple walking through Samara town center.

Wander through artisan boutiques, grab some tasty food, or watch a local jam sesh at one of the bars.

This is overall a pretty quiet and chill spot, but there is definitely a small and infectious surf town vibe here. This spot really has the potential to be one of those places you get “lost” for a bit.

If you have time for a quick excursion while in Samara, check out Isla Chora. This half-day tour starts with kayaking along the scenic coastline—a sight many tourists often miss. Once you reach the island, you’ll snorkel in the natural sanctuary that surrounds it. There are tons of tropical fish here; if you’re lucky, you may even see turtles!

An aerial shot of Isla Chora and it's beautiful blue waters.

You’ll actually see Isla Chora in the distance to your left when looking down the beach. You can walk all the way down the beach to get a closer look, but you’ll need a kayak to get out there!

Dolphins are known to swim off of Samara’s coast year-round. On this boat tour and snorkeling trip , you’ll get the chance to see dolphins and other marine creatures as you journey along the stunning shore. Your snorkeling is right off Isla Chora, too, so if you don’t want to kayak there, this is a great alternative.

You’ll likely see dolphins on this tour, and depending on the season, you may even spot whales, sea turtles, or stingrays! This is one of the most incredible things to do in Samara, and the price point isn’t crazy.

A pod of dolphins breaking the surface of the ocean near Samara Beach.

It will probably be one of the cheapest spots in the country, actually, so you might want to take advantage while you’re here instead of waiting for the more expensive national parks that you might be heading to later on!

Playa Carrillo is a picturesque beach situated just south of Samara Beach and is often considered one of the most beautiful and peaceful beaches in the area—probably because it’s pretty secluded!

The beach’s serene atmosphere, clear turquoise waters, and soft white sand make it an ideal spot for swimming, lounging on the beach, and relaxing under a palm tree. There’s no surf here, but you can go paddleboarding, kayaking, and snorkeling.

Tropical palm trees on Playa Carillo in Costa Rica.

In addition to its stunning palm tree-lined shores, under the water, you’ll find a variety of marine life, such as colorful tropical fish and even sea turtles. Sport fishing charters are also available for those who want to try their hand at catching their own dinner.

There’s a small town, Puerto Carrillo, that offers a variety of dining options, ranging from local sodas (small restaurants that serve traditional Costa Rican cuisine) to international restaurants. It’s about a 10-15 minute taxi ride out here.

The Macaw Recovery Network is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation and recovery of endangered macaw species in Costa Rica. The organization works to protect macaw habitats, breed and release endangered macaws, and rescue and rehabilitate injured or orphaned macaws. Their focus is on increasing the populations of the endangered Great Green Macaw and Scarlet Macaw.

They offer 1-2 hour guided tours where your money goes directly to their efforts, and you get to hang out with cool birds for a while! The only unfortunate thing about this spot is that you’ll need your own car or organize a taxi to visit as it’s about 45 minutes outside of Samara.

Remember how we discussed how cute Samara Beach is and it’s a town worth visiting? Well, you’ll need to have that as your mantra while you’re shlepping yourself over here.

Depending on how you get here, it’s going to take a minute. This spot is a bit out there! I wanted to snatch a shuttle to get here, but unfortunately/fortunately, Samara still isn’t HUGELY popular as despite being here during high seasons, there was nobody else to share the shuttle with me, so there wasn’t one!

Inside a shuttle bus in Costa Rica.

Keep this in mind—just because you want a shuttle, there might not be one, or you’ll have to book it as a spendy private transfer.

So, I had to catch a series of three local buses to get here, and it ate half my day despite coming from Playa Del Coco, which is only 2 hours away! I even had to get off at a stop that was almost literally in the middle of nowhere to wait for my next bus. It was quite an adventure, and I definitely had to flex my (poor) Spanish skills!

No matter where you’re coming from, if you’re using the public bus, you’ll stop at Nicoya. You’ll likely have to switch buses in this town. Here is the Nicoya bus station for reference.

People standing in line to board the shuttle bus.

Luckily public buses are relatively frequent and budget-friendly. Just ask your host at your hotel for the bus info depending on where you’re coming from, and you’ll be sorted. If you’re coming from Santa Teresa , you might be fine finding a shuttle, as I was able to grab a shuttle from Samara Beach to Santa Teresa.

  • Natural Center in Samara – This spot is a little center chock full of places to eat and shops for cute beachy stuff. Mr. Pelicano had some really good tacos, and there were some other restaurants with healthy bowls and even a pizza joint. I wanted to eat at all of the places here!
  • Falafel Cafe – Self-explanatory and delicious. Not to mention, mega-popular!

The Hidden Gem of Nicoya Peninsula

Samara is a vibrant fishing village offering local unforgettable adventure for backpackers and comfort seeking travelers. Compared to other beach towns like Tamarindo and Jaco, Samara is a place still relatively untouched by mass tourism, which certainly would give additional flavor to your experience.

Our Samara travel guide takes you to the best beaches, most epic surf, and greatest hotels, restaurants, and bars in Samara and Carrillo.

If you need a laid back vacation or some chill out time before or after exploring the other parts of Costa Rica, Samara is the answer.

What to do in Samara

The golden sand beach, which stretches all across the bay, is great for walking or horseback riding . You can arrange a horseback riding tour with Samara locals.

Swimming at Playa Samara is relaxing. The aquamarine ocean surrounded by outer reef provides calmer waters making it one of the few beaches in Costa Rica where you can swim without navigating through waves. As always, use caution when swimming in the ocean.

Snorkeling is possible in the vicinity of the beach, but be aware of the tides. You might carry your own snorkeling gear or rent from some of the local shops.

surf rental in Samara

Surfing is great for beginners. The waves are mellow and fun. There are a few surf schools where you could rent surfboards or take surf-lessons. For more experienced surfers, there are spots nearby that work during high tide.

Samara Travel Guide to Bars and Restaurants

Gusto Beach is a beach bar and restaurant . With white stylish interior, in combination with the blue sky and ocean waters, it offers the ultimate experience. It is a bit pricey but it is definitely worthwhile. They serve various tasty dishes, including Italian style pizza and salads. If you are an espresso lover, it is also a great place to get a caffeine boost, while you contemplate the ocean and the spectacular sunset. This beach bar and restaurant even works at night, with live music, nice cocktails and a wine selection. It has a central beach front location, accessible from the road and the sand.

gusto beach restaurant samara

Samara’s Cultural Center is a place that unites art, culture and food. Here you may find a few alternative and soulful cafés/restaurants serving diverse food (for lunch or brunch) and a selection of coffees.

Falafel Café with fresh Middle East cuisine is my favorite. This quick, budget friendly option has excellent reviews and is the perfect stop after a morning on the beach.

Note: some of the cafés sell arty souvenirs as well. Near the beach there is also a local souvenir market that runs daily and has typical colorful Costa Rican souvenirs.

La Perla offers local food and a selection of Casados, the typical Costa Rican dish. This “soda” (the name for a traditional Costa Rican restaurant) is located on the west end of the bay.

Samara Travel Guide to Hotels

There are various hotels, some more luxurious, and others more basic.

Hotel el Pequeño Gecko Verde is one of the most cozy, and expensive, with superb services. It is located just a few minutes from the beach. Surrounded by amazing tropical flora, it offers a variety of amazing facilities for full enjoyment.

Hotel Belvedere is only a five-minute walk from the beach. It is a nice and pleasant hotel of mid-range price. For the facilities and services offered it is the best value hotel.

For those with a tighter budget, there are several hostels and private rooms.

Las Olas is at the west end of the beach, near the police station. It is popular among backpackers and young travelers. The prices vary from 15 USD to higher, depending of the type of room.

Hostel Mariposa, near “Intercultura” on the east end of Samara, is the most popular place among younger travelers. It is a bit more pricey but very well run, colorful and clean.

A Complete Guide To The Hip Beach Town of Samara, Costa Rica

travel map with pins for home

If you are looking for an under the radar town to spend your time in Costa Rica in, do yourself a favour and visit Samara, Costa Rica. It is a hip beach town, the perfect size and there are so many things to do in Samara, Costa Rica that you can easily fill up your time.

I would consider Samara the little sister of Nosara. It is a bit smaller and still retains an authentic Costa Rican culture.

Samara is only 30 minutes from Nosara and it is a lot cheaper. It is also located in the Guanacaste province. It should definitely be added to your Costa Rica Travel plans.

Samara, Costa Rica crime rates are low making it super safe for families and solo travellers as well

How To Get To Playa Samara Beach Costa Rica from Liberia

Samara Costa Rica

Samara Costa Rica is located in the province of Guanacaste in the Nicoya region. This little town can be reached by car in about 2.5 hours from Liberia International Airport. This is the easiest way to get there. The roads on this route are pretty paved and well maintained.

If you are coming from San Jose, Costa Rica the drive is about 4.5 hours.

Group or Private Shuttle

There are lots of shuttles that leave on the daily from Liberia Airport to the town of Samara. If you booked a shuttle with a group, the price per person on average is about $50-$60. If you book a private shuttle to Samara, you are looking at about $150 total. Prices are in USD!

Public Transportation

Travelling to Samara Costa Rica on a budget? Lots of people are and taking public transportation there is a great way to keep your Samara budget on track! There are buses twice daily from the Liberia Airport and you can see that schedule here. Routes from Liberia to Samara show 3 hours but expect some delays

How To Get To Samara Beach from Nosara?

Playa Samara

There is a long route from Nosara to Samara that is recommended if you do not have an SUV. This route is through Nicoya on Route 21. From Route 21, you will then take Route 150 right into the town of Samara. It is very straightforward.

The short route or short cut is through Route 160 which requires you to cross a river. The river is called Rio Buena Vista and during dry season, it is very shallow and easy to cross. One week when we crossed, there was almost no water.

During wet season, I would avoid the short cut from Nosara to Samara.

When to Visit Samara Costa Rica?

In my opinion, the best time to visit Playa Samara is between March-April. Crowds from the holiday season have tampered off a bit and you are still not in rainy season.

The town of Samara gets very busy during high season which runs from December to end of April with the absolute peak time being from December- February. I would avoid it at that time.

Rainy season is from May-November. While there is something special about rainy season in Costa Rica, it also can be very frustrating with flooding and difficulty getting around.

Samara, Costa Rica weather or Costa Rica weather in general can be unpredictable though so there are times when you expect rain and it could turn out to be beautiful!

Samara boasts an active expat community, comprised of mostly North Americans and Europeans.  Around 1,500 people make up Samara and its outskirts year round.

How Many Days Do You Need In Sámara beach?

Guide to Playa Samara

Some people quickly pass through Samara for a day or two and some people come to Playa Samara and never leave!! haha.

If you are staying in Nosara, you can easily do a day trip to Samara.

If you are doing a whole trip through the Nicoya peninsula, I would recommend 2-3 days to really take it all in!!

The Best Hotels in Samara

Playa Samara features a lot of price friendly hotels, bed and breakfasts and Air Bnb options. Accommodations are much cheaper than in Nosara ( almost half the price) so that is worth considering when planning your Costa Rica Trip.

There are some great Samara, Costa Rica Air Bnb options as well!

If you are looking for hotels though, below are the best hotels in Samara based on each pricing level.

Hotel Azura-Top End Option

Places to Stay in Samara

Hotel Azura is a luxury all inclusive option that is a new spot in the area. It is on the south end of Samara beach and very secluded. The pool is the real eye show stopper of the resort and although Samara beach is beautiful it is very hard not to set up shop there.

Travelling with kids though? Unfortunately this hotel is Adult only!

Price Range: $400 +

Samara Palm Lodge-Budget Hotel Option in Samara

Budget Hotel Playa Samara

Samara Lodge is one of the most reasonable places to stay in Playa Samara and is rated one of the best overall places to stay by Trip Advisor.

Samara Lodge is a 5 minute walk from the beach so it’s quieter than some places directly on the beach. The rooms are simple but a great option for the price.

Price Range: $75 +

The Best Restaurants in Samara Costa Rica

You will not have a problem grabbing a bite to eat in Samara. There are plenty of restaurants along the beach and on the main strip. Another great thing about the Samara food scene is that you can find a mix of just about everything! Local Tico places, Fresh Vegetarian Options, Italian, American and they even have a Super Samara supermarket if you want to cook up something yourself.

Here are some of my favourite Samara restaurants!

Gusto Beach Restaurant- The Best Restaurant in Samara

Samara Costa Rica

Gusto Beach is the best beachfront restaurant in Samara. This Italian restaurant makes you feel like you have been transported to Italy! It has a killer Aperol Spritz list and really good pizzas

If Italian food isn’t your thing (Are you Ok?), they do have plenty of other options on the menu.

This place is great for breakfast, lunch OR dinner. The Dinner crowd/scene is a bit more rowdy while during the day it is very chill.

This place is a steakhouse and barbeque restaurant. It features a one of a kind wood burning grill which makes the dishes truly unique. It also has prime real estate on the beach! If you are looking for a nice dinner in Samara Beach, this restaurant is a nice option.

Prices are similar to Gusto Beach.

Bohemia Café

Restaurants in Samara Costa Rica

This cute little cafe in Playa Samara, just off the main street, is a great spot to grab breakfast or lunch. It serves up juices, crepes, paninis, pastries and some unique coffees. If you are a digital nomad, you can sit here and work too on their outdoor patio.

Prices are very reasonable.

L’Authentique

Playa Samara

L’ Authentique  is home away from home. The ambiance, food, and service team welcome you as if you were long-lost family or friends returning after a long trip. Julien and Eva are the charming, ever jovial couple. They are attentive, efficient, and super friendly.

This tapas restaurant with French inspired cuisine and wine is 10/10. It features imported cheeses, cured meats and unique sharing style dishes. They also have the most amazing French bread. The ambience is also something special.

TIP: Get the Tapas platter. Best bang for your buck!

Marea Surf Shop Cafe

Located on the main strip, this place is all sorts of cool. It is not only a cafe but it is also a surf shop with some nice gear. We both picked up a Marea branded tshirt and felt like we were cool Costa Rican Tico surfers haha.

Samara Costa Rica

They serve up coffees, smoothie, pastries and ACAI BOWLS! Yum. Naturally I got one of those and it was very, very yummy.

Malehu Coffee

Playa Samara Coffee

One of the newer places in town, Malehu Coffee has delicious coffee in a modern and chic setting. This is located just off the main strip. It is open bright and early at 7AM which was nice for us since the kids were up really early!

First class spot all the way! The pastries are fancy and so are the lattes and it was a nice change of pace from some casual breakfasts we were having. Very good! They have Italian and European coffee and also Costa Rican coffee.

Microbar- The Best Place For a Cocktail in Samara

This little bar in Samara was very cute and had craft beers, speciality cocktails and happy hour specials. It is just a tiny little space but has big personality. We loved the decor inside and as the sun went down, the place really got busy. There isn’t a ton of nightlife in Samara so Microbar is a great place to meet friends for drinks

Microbar Playa Samra

Some other Amazing Restaurants in Samara worth checking out:

  • Falafel Cafe – Mediterranean Food
  • La Dolce Vita- Another Italian Spot. Kind of similar to Gusto Beach. More lounge-y!
  • La Aldrea- Amazing smoothies and juices!
  • Casa Esmeralda- The best place for fresh seafood! Loved the Calamari
  • Luv Burger- With a spot in Nosara and now Samara, this is a great spot for a Veggie burger…and a vibe!
  • Roots Bakery- fresh pastries and great coffee!

The Best Things To Do in Playa Samara

There are lots of things to do in Samara, Costa Rica but you can also just sit at the beach and lounge the entire time. We did a bit of both and loved the balance of it all. Here are some of our favourite things that we got up to in Playa Samara.

Werner Sauter Biological Reserve

Werner Sauter Biological Reserve is a great place to spend a morning or afternoon. You can see a range of animals like birds, monkeys and other types of wildlife!

The Macau reserve is close by so don’t be surprised to find some flying around here too!

There are also hiking trails within and there is a rewarding look out point of the town and beaches!

You can do this with a guide or with a tour or you can do it on your own! Doing it with a guide is about $60 per person.

Visit Nearby Beaches

Samara Costa Rica

While Playa Samara is a beautiful and fun beach, if you are staying in town for a few days you should definitely check out some of the neighbouring beaches.

Playa Carillo and Playa Barrigona are about 10-15PM away and are two of the most beautiful beaches in not only the Nicoya but in all of Costa Rica. They are comparable with the beaches on the pacific coast or dare I say Central America in general. Seriously stunning shorelines.

Playa Samara is sandwiched between the two so get in an ATV or car and do a little day trip to either!

You can also go further south down to Santa Teresa!

Visit A Waterfall

La Roca Waterfall is only about 15-20 minutes away from Samara and is definitely worth checking out if you are in town for a few days. There isn’t a ton of waterfalls in the Nicoya area so it’s a great option to get your Costa Rica waterfall fix. It’s about 20 minutes to get to the waterfall itself and is an easy hike.

Keep in mind this is not like the waterfalls near Manuel Antonio

Take Surf Lessons in Playa Samara

Things to do in Samara Costa RIca

Taking Surfing lessons in the Nicoya area of Costa Rica is a rite of passage and pretty much something that should be mandatory! It really gives you a true feel of what life is like in these areas.

Tico’s Surf School is a great option to book a lesson. Playa Samara is also a great beach to learn to surf as the waves are very small compared to Nosara.

Snorkle at Isla Chorro

Not far from Samara, is the little island called Isla Chorro. There are local boats that can bring you out there to snorkel or you can rent a kayak if you really feel adventurous! You can see some beautiful fish ….and some times there is even dolphin spotting’s!

Helpful Hints for your Visit to Samara Costa Rica

  • There is a supermarket there if you need groceries. The town of Nicoya is about 25 minutes away if you need to hit a bigger box store

The Nosara vibe is totally different to Samara… which is also larger and more diverse in a number of ways… Nosara being more of a “trust-fund hippy set” from its surf destination inception… Sámara is not Nosara’s lil’ sis’.

At the risk of being ‘nit-picky’, Luv Burger was established in Sámara before heading to Nosara.

As with many Guanacaste beach havens, over-development and commercialization is frequently to the detriment of Tico’s and the road/traffic/transport, water supply/waste management, internet and communications infrastructure simply can’t keep up… put simply its all getting to big and too busy too fast… sorry, but the plethora of blogs posted by short-term transient nomads is not help the communities and neighbouring pueblos & barrios.

Sámara does have ‘quiet days’ even through the December to February’peak’ – something to be grateful for as the once ‘dreamy somnambulant paee’ takes us back to times of real ‘pura vida’ – that being, grateful for each naturally abundant day or night.

Bendiciones y Saludos

We really like the map but I wish it came in a larger size we have traveled a lot of places and by the time we put all the pins in it seemed cluttered I should have ordered a North American and a European map. Excellent customer service thanks for working with me on the pin colors.

How florida and arizona supreme court rulings change the abortion access map.

Selena Simmons-Duffin

Selena Simmons-Duffin

Hilary Fung

In a few weeks, Florida and Arizona are set to join most states in the southern U.S. in banning abortion. It's a significant shake up to the abortion legal landscape, and data shared exclusively with NPR maps and quantifies what the changes will mean for millions of Americans.

On Tuesday, the Arizona Supreme Court cleared the way for an 1864 law to be enforced. That law completely bans abortion except when someone's life is in danger. Last week, the Florida Supreme Court made its decision to allow a ban on abortions after six weeks gestation to take effect on May 1.

Caitlin Myers , an economics professor at Middlebury College in Vermont, has been tracking abortion facilities and travel distances since 2009. She analyzed how these latest rulings will affect the access map.

"Because of these bans, it's about 6 million women of reproductive age who are experiencing an increase in distance of more than 200 miles," she says.

She points out that Floridians who are seeking abortions after six weeks will have to travel nearly 600 miles to North Carolina, which has a 72-hour waiting period. "So we're talking about a day's drive to a state that requires you to engage in this multi-day process," Myers says. "A lot of people might end up going several hundred miles further to Virginia."

For people in Arizona, after the 1864 law takes effect, "their nearest destinations are pretty long drives. They're going to be facing hundreds of miles to reach southern California, New Mexico, Colorado," Myers says. "I think Arizona spillover is likely to affect California in a way that California hasn't yet been affected by bans."

Myers helms the Myers Abortion Facility Database . She has gathered data about facilities – including clinics, doctors, and hospitals that publicly indicated that they provide abortions – going back more than a decade, using data licensure databases, directories, and Wayback Machine captures of websites from years past. She uses a team of undergraduate research assistants to periodically call facilities and make sure the information is up to date.

Numbers of abortions rise in Florida, decline in Arizona

Although Florida and Arizona have historically both been politically purple states and both have had 15-week abortion bans since 2022, the states have been on different trajectories when it comes to abortion and play very different roles in their regions.

There were about 12,000 abortions in Arizona in 2023, according to the Guttmacher Institute , a research organization that supports abortion rights. Out-of-state travel accounted for 3% of abortions in the state, and the overall number of abortions has been declining there in recent years, Guttmacher finds.

By contrast, there were nearly 85,000 abortions in Florida in 2023, according to state data , just a few thousand fewer than Illinois, which has positioned itself as a haven for people seeking abortions in the post- Roe era. And the number of abortions happening in the state has been on the rise. "The majority of the increase has been driven by out-of-state travel into Florida because of bans in surrounding states," explains Isaac Maddow-Zimet , a Guttmacher data scientist. "That really speaks to the role that Florida has played in the region where there really aren't many other options."

The Alliance Defending Freedom, which brought the case in Arizona, frames those affected by the new laws in a different way. "We celebrate the Arizona Supreme Court's decision that allows the state's pro-life law to again protect the lives of countless, innocent unborn children," the organization wrote in a statement this week .

Even with new bans in place, there are a few ways residents of Florida and Arizona will be able to access abortion without driving hundreds of miles. People with means will be able to fly to states where abortion access is protected. Others will be able to use telehealth to connect with providers in those states and receive abortion medication in the mail – a practice that has been growing in popularity in recent months. Telehealth medication abortions, though, could be curtailed by a pending case before the U.S. Supreme Court. (A decision in that case is expected this summer.)

In Florida, some will be able to get abortions before the six-week gestational limit, which is about two weeks after a missed period. "Folks have a really narrow window in order to meet that gestational duration limit if they even know about their pregnancy in time," Maddow-Zimet of Guttmacher explains. "And that's something that's particularly difficult in Florida because Florida requires an in-person counseling visit 24 hours before the abortion."

'A substantial barrier'

Many thousands of people in Florida and Arizona will be unable to navigate those options and will carry their pregnancies instead, Myers says.

"It's easy to think – if an abortion is so important to somebody, they will find a way, they will figure it out," she says, but research on people seeking abortions illustrates why that's not always possible. "[Many] are low income. They're in very difficult life circumstances. They're experiencing disruptive life events like the loss of a job or breaking up with a partner or threatened eviction. Many of them are parenting and have difficulty obtaining child care." One large study showed about 80% of people seeking abortions had subprime credit scores.

"If you think about all that, it is perhaps not so surprising that the results of my research and other people's research shows very strongly and unequivocally that distance is a substantial barrier to people who are seeking abortions," Myers says.

Mary Ziegler , a law professor and historian of reproductive rights at the University of California - Davis, says it's worth noting how these states both came to have new bans. "The common denominator is conservative state supreme courts reaching decisions contrary to what voters would want, interestingly, in an election year when those judges are facing retention elections," she says.

Voters in Florida will have a chance to weigh in on abortion access in November, when an amendment to their state constitution will be on the ballot.
