Himeji is a small city in Hyogo Prefecture and only 100km west of Osaka. And when you visit Himeji Castle from Osaka, you will visit one of Japan’s top three most beautiful original castles. Known as the White Heron Castle, Himeji Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Himeji’s biggest attraction.

In this post, I’ll show you exactly how to travel from Osaka to Himeji Castle and see the White Heron Castle in various ways. Plus, I included other unique things to do and local food specialities so you can maximize your time during your day trip to Himeji.

Map: Himeji Castle Day Trip itinerary

A visit to Himeji Castle is a must for any travellers going to quaint city. But there are many things to do besides seeing the beautiful white castle.

I put together a comprehensive one-day Himeji itinerary for anyone who wants to visit the charming town and see all the top Himeji attractions in one day.

All the top things to do in Himeji are pinned on the interactive map.  Red numbered pins are all the must-see attractions   on the day trip and the blue pins are other things to do in Himeji  if you are staying longer or want to change up the itinerary.

Himeji Itinerary: Himeji Castle and Other Attractions

1 & 2. walk to himeji castle via covered pedestrian walkway.

Instead of walking up Otemae Street, the main road between Himeji Station and Himeji Castle, walk up Miyuki-dori or Pastel Omizo Shopping Street .

Both of these are covered pedestrian street are located east and parallel of Otemae Street. They are many shops and restaurants lining both streets. Plus, they are especially nice for shielding from the sun and rain.

Miyuki-dori

3. Visit Himeji Castle

Weave through the premise of the castle and find the entrance to the Main Keep , a six-level castle with pristine white-plastered exterior walls that resembles a white heron in flight.

When you walk through the Main Keep, you can see the restored interiors and learn about the history of the castle. And at the top floor, there are small windows where you can peak out and see panoramic views of Himeji City .

Himeji Tourism is doing a great job promoting the city and Himeji attractions. For Himeji Castle, there is an app you can download where you can listen to the audio guide on your smartphone for free. Just scan the code on-site and listen to the informative guide.

Walking up to the entrance of the Main Keep

Hours: 9am-6pm (April 27 – August 31) & 9am-5pm (Sept 1 – April 26) | Admission: ¥1,050 combination ticket for Himeji Castle and Koko-en Garden. Or ¥1,000 for the castle only.

4. Wander around Koko-en Garden

Located southwest of Himeji Castle, there is a traditional Japanese garden called Koko-en Garden . It has nine Japanese gardens, a small beautiful pond and an onsite restaurant . The atmosphere is peaceful (especially if you just visited Himeji Castle on a busy day!).

Follow the path at the entrance and let it take you on a journey through one of the best gardens in Hyogo Prefecture. It takes one hour to see the garden thoroughly and the combination ticket for Himeji Castle includes the entry for Koko-en Garden.

Koko-en Garden

Hours: 9am-6pm (April 27 – August 31) & 9am-5pm (Sept 1 – April 26)

5. Walk around Himeji Castle

Touring the inside of Himeji Castle is definitely a highlight of the day trip. But you should also check out the surrounding gardens. During spring time, the garden is one of the best places for viewing cherry blossoms .

When I visited the castle, I walked counterclockwise around the castle and saw some interesting things.

From the east, I saw a large defensive wall including the Taikakurou Tower . And as I followed the path to the north side of the castle, I saw the Himeji Castle outside of the exterior moat which is another beautiful view of the castle.

And near the northwest side of the castle premise, there is an old well called Sagi-no-shimizu Well slightly hidden from the low stone walls.

Perhaps there are more to see around the castle but these are some of the things I found as I strolled through the garden. And if you found any other interesting things, let me know in the comments below.

Taikakurou Tower

6. Hike up to Otokoyama Haisuiike Park and see Himeji Castle and the city

Keep walking west and soon you will reach the base of a set of long stairway. Climb 194 steps and you will reach the peak which is a small park called Otokoyama Haisuiike Park .

It is a small park but the view is totally worth hiking up a long set of stairs. And of course, you can see Himeji Castle from the park.

Otokoyama Haisuiike Park

7. Try conger eel and raw egg at Tamagoya

Eating in Himeji is very affordable. Most food options are within walking distance and centrally located between Himeji Station and Himeji Castle.

For lunch, try conger eel , a local Himeji specialty, at Tamagoya .

I ordered the “Omotenashi” Gozen” set which includes raw eggs and rice, small dish of the day, miso soup, Japanese pickles, roasted conger eel Himeji style, and pudding.

You crack the egg in your rice, so the rice cooks the egg. But don’t worry, even if the egg is not cooked thoroughly, you can still eat it. Eating raw egg in Japan is safe. Plus, you can ask for more rice if are super hungry.

Tamagoya

8. Snap a photo of Himeji Castle from the viewing deck

Above Himeji Station, there is a viewing deck where you can see directly at Himeji Castle.

At first I didn’t want to visit the observation deck because I wasn’t sure what the view would be like especially when the viewing deck is not too high. But I was pleasantly surprised.

So drop by the viewing deck and see for yourself. It only takes an extra minute away from your itinerary.

Himeji Castle from the viewing deck

9. Take the bus to Mount Shosha and ride the Shoshazan Ropeway

Himeji Castle is definitely the highlight of Himeji. But the temple complex called Engyoji Temple , hidden away in Mount Shosha , is pretty impressive as well. And I highly recommend going (and also because you have the entire afternoon free in Himeji).

To get there, take bus #8 at bus stop 10 at the Shinki Bus Himeji Station Bus Terminal (between Himeji Station and Sanyo-Himeji Station). The bus ride is about 30 minutes and costs ¥280 each way. Use your IC card or pay cash.

At the base of Mount Shosha, buy a return ticket for the Shoshazan Ropeway for ¥1,000 , unless you want to hike up and back down.

Alternatively, you can buy a “Mt Shosha Ropeway Package Ticket” for ¥1,420 at the Shinki Bus Info Centre (near bus stop 10). The combination ticket includes a roundtrip bus ride and the roundtrip ropeway ride.

Shinki Bus Himeji Station Bus Terminal

10. Wander around Shoshazan Engyoji Temple

Engyoji Temple is a group of temples was founded about 1,000 years ago by a holy Buddhist priest . Legend has it that anyone who climbs this mountain will be purified spiritually .

Once you are at the top, walk towards Niomon Gate , which is the entrance. Not far away is Maniden , a wooden temple with a grand balcony and other temples that are collectively part of the Engyoji Temple complex.

Mount Shosha is an excellent spot for cherry blossom in spring and also fall foliage in autumn . And it was the location for the film, The Last Samurai. Perhaps you can recognize some places from the movie?

Niomon Gate

Hours: 8:30am-6pm (Spring to Fall) and 8:30am-5pm (Winter) | Admission: ¥500

11. Take a look at Himeji Castle in the late afternoon

After the short hike in Mount Shosha, take bus #8 back to Himeji.

And if you cannot get enough of Himeji Castle, drop by the castle again after visiting Mount Shosha. The castle is particularly beautiful after the sun is down and when the lights shine on the building itself . Even though the castle is closed, you can still take many fantastic photos from afar.

12 or 13. Have Himeji oden stew for dinner

Another local specialty you should try is the Himeji oden stew . Oden is Japanese one-pot dish made with daikon radish, konjac jelly, eggs, fishcakes, etc. Usually, mustard is used as a condiment but in Himeji, it is dipped in ginger soy sauce.

I had oden at Nadagiku Kappa , an oden restaurant has been around since 1910. They offer a Nadagiku specialty , which is oden with a white sauce that is made with sake lees , the sweet solids that remain after sake brewing. They also have a black sauce which is soy sauce flavoured with ginger , which is the Himeji special. Both are excellent.

Or try oden at at Himeji Oden and Kushikatsu Shop in the alley full of izayaka restaurants. It is a bit more touristy but you can also try oden and Kushikatsu (skewered, deep-fried food, a popular food in Osaka ) at the same time.

Nadagiku Kappa

14. Take the train back from Himeji to Osaka

After a full day of exploring Himeji Castle and all the attractions in the city, it is time to return to Osaka.

Note the time for the last train before you start your itinerary so there won’t be any surprises at the end of the day. The last JR Shinkansen is at 11:08pm. The last JR Tokaido-Sanyo Line train is 10:56pm. And the last Hanshin Train is 10:23pm .

Other things to do besides visiting Himeji Castle

While Himeji Castle is definitely the highlight of the city, there are other things you can do and see around the city. If you want to switch up the itinerary or stay an extra day, there are a few interesting museums in the centre of the city:

  • Himeji City Museum of Art (10am-5pm; closed Mondays; ¥210) – the small museum that has artwork in painting, sculptures and other arts and crafts. The majority of the exhibit is composed of French artists like Monet and Matisse and has artwork by Japanese artists.
  • Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History (10am-5pm; closed Mondays; ¥200) – learn about the local history and the culture of Hyogo Prefecture and Himeji Castle through this one-of-a-kind museum.
  • Himeji City Museum of Literature (10am-5pm; closed Mondays; ¥310) – celebrates literary figures associated with Himeji. But if you don’t have enought time, pop over to the museum and simply admire the building; a modern masterpiece designed by Tadao Ando, a well-known Japanese architect.

Where to stay in Himeji as a solo traveller

Most people will take a day trip to Himeji and return to Osaka.

But if you like the vibes of a small town, Himeji City is an excellent place to stay overnight. Accommodations in Himeji are inexpensive and the majority of hostels and hotels are in walking distance to Himeji Station. Booking ahead is encouraged but not necessary.

I stayed at both of these accommodations over two trips to Himeji and highly recommend both:

  • ONE Hostel Himeji ($) – cheap and cheerful mixed and all-female dorms available. The casual hostel is located off the shopping street. The best part about the hostel is the friendly hosts. Check Agoda for prices & reviews.
  • Richmond Hotel Himeji ($$) – simple and modern single room with a private bathroom. The hotel is located just south of Himeji Station. Check Agoda for prices & reviews.

Absolutely! I think Himeji is a wonderful city as a day trip from Osaka. Himeji Castle is one of the best castles I’ve ever seen and the city itself is quite compact and neat to see.

Hi, May I know from Osaka, Kyoto or Kobe to Himeiji is the best and easy? Is that a Hanshin railway train at Osaka station to Himeji station ?

' src=

For Osaka to Himeji, the bullet train from Shin-Osaka Station to Himeji Station take 28 minutes.

For Kyoto, you will have to connect through Osaka. That’s additional 30 minutes.

Kobe is closest to Himeji. It takes 62 minutes via Hanshin Railway. And as fast as 37 minutes for Japan Railway.

From the website, it looks like Hanshin Railway connects Osaka, Kobe and Himeji. From Osaka-Umeda (Hanshin) to SanyoHimeji Station, it takes 93 minutes. Hanshin will take longer.

I think it is best to go via Osaka or Kobe via Japan Railway as they are the fastest and most direct options.

If you want to check for other options or for the exact time you are going. Check hyperdia.com

Hope this helps!

Planning to take a day trip to Himeji from Osaka or Kyoto? We’ve put together all the information you need before visiting.

Himeji is a popular travel destination thanks to the striking white castle in its centre. Since it’s located close to other popular cities like Kyoto and Osaka, Himeji makes for the perfect day trip.

Himeji Castle is said to be the most beautiful of its kind in all of Japan. Due to its white-grey colour scheme and elegant design resembling a bird spreading its wings, it got nicknamed “ Shirasagi-jō ” or “ White Heron Castle “. In 1993, it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

This guide will answer all your questions related to transportation and entrance fees, and introduce a few other sightseeing spots around the area to help you make the most out of your Himeji day trip. Let’s take a look!

5. Buy a Souvenir in Miyuki Shopping Street

The map below includes every point of interest mentioned in this guide. All sights are within walking distance from Himeji Castle, making this day trip itinerary super easy to follow.

One Day Himeji Itinerary

Here is everything you need to know before visiting Himeji and its famous castle.

1. Arrive at JR Himeji Station or Sanyo-Himeji Station

Being conveniently located on the famous Golden Route, it’s no secret that a trip to Himeji Castle from Osaka or Kyoto is a great idea while travelling around Japan.

Depending on your point of departure, you will need between 30 minutes to two hours to reach JR Himeji Station or Sanyo-Himeji Station from Osaka or Kyoto. A detailed description of how to get to Himeji (including information on the Himeji Tourist Pass) can be found below .

Once you’ve arrived, leave the building via the JR Himeji Station North Exit. If you’ve taken a train to the adjacent Sanyo-Himeji Station, you can leave the building through the main exit.

From here, you can either take a bus for around 5 minutes or follow the main street straight for around 15 minutes on foot to reach Himeji Castle.

2. Visit Himeji Castle

The history of Himeji Castle dates back to the year 1333 when Akamatsu Norimura, a samurai of the Akamatsu clan, built a fortress on top of a hill. In 1346, his son Akamatsu Sadanori demolished the fort and erected Himeyama Castle in its place.

It was not until the late 16th century that Toyotomi Hideyoshi began remodelling the whole structure into the famous white castle that is now attracting millions of visitors each year.

Himeji Castle was completed in the early Edo Period (1603–1868) and is known for its outstanding sturdiness. It never got entirely burned down or destroyed like many other Japanese castles did over the centuries, and even survived the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995. This makes it one of the most famous landmarks in Japan .

himeji castle with cherry blossoms

When arriving from JR Himeji Station, you can head directly towards the Sakuramon Bridge and the Ōtemon Gate from where you can enter the admission-free area of Himeji Castle.

It’s up to you if you prefer to explore the free area that mainly revolves around Sannomaru Square (including the Peony Garden of Princess Sen ) first or want to enter the paid area directly.

Once you’ve entered the paid area, you need to walk up some stairs. The winding path leading to the main castle is a little steep. But hang in there, the short hike is worth it! Don’t forget to explore the different areas of the castle complex such as the West Bailey on the way up.

heads up

Himeji Castle offers guided tours in English twice a day at 10 AM and 1 PM (each tour takes 1 hour and 45 minutes) on a first-come-first-served basis for up to 10 people. Participants need to pay an extra fee of ¥1,000.

Upon entering Himeji Castle, you have to take your shoes off. The wooden floor inside is a little slippery, so be careful while walking. Inside, you can learn more about the castle’s history and architecture and have a look at Himeji from above.

himeji from above

How Long Does It Take to Visit Himeji Castle?

Himeji Castle is the main attraction of Himeji, so it’s likely you’ll spend most of your time in this area.

When visiting only Himeji Castle, around two hours should be more than sufficient. If you want to thoroughly explore the castle complex, you might need up to three hours . This doesn’t include Kōko-en Garden and the surrounding Himeyama Park.

Furthermore, Himeji Castle can get crowded during peak season. When the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, it’s better to calculate more time than usual for a trip to Himeji.

Depending on the weather conditions, the blooming period of the cherry trees surrounding Himeji Castle varies each year. In 2023, they reached full bloom around April 1st. Make sure to check the cherry blossom forecasts online before visiting in spring!

Himeji Castle Entry Fees

The general admission fee for Himeji Castle is ¥1,000 for adults. However, there is a combined ticket for Himeji Castle and the close by Kōko-en Garden that costs only ¥1,050.

Since the regular entrance fee for Kōko-en Garden is ¥310, the combined ticket is worth purchasing. The garden is also part of this Himeji itinerary, so make sure to get a ticket for both sights when following our guide.

If you’re planning to use the Himeji Tourist Pass during your trip, you can get a 20% discount on the entrance fee in these two places.

3. Walk Through Himeyama Park

After exploring Himeji Castle, it’s time to see Himeyama Park . Leave the paid area and walk left until you reach the forking paths around Kiseimon Gate. Following the left path from there, you’ll eventually reach Himeyama Park.

Himeyama Park stretches across the back side of Himeji Castle. On the way, there are a few little shrines such as Himeji-jinja , a little pond and the castle moat with plenty of koi carp to see.

If you’re fond of exhibitions, you also have the option of paying a visit to the Himeji City Museum of Art or the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History . Both of them are within walking distance from Himeji Castle and Himeyama Park when you take the path to the right around Kiseimon Gate.

When following the course through Himeyama Park, you’ll reach the main street at some point. From there, you can easily access Kōko-en Garden.

himeji jinja

4. Enjoy the Serenity of Kōko-en Garden

Turning right after reaching the main street in front of Himeji Castle again, you should find yourself in front of the entrance gate to Kōko-en Garden . Remember, you don’t need an extra ticket if you bought the combined ticket in Himeji Castle.

Kōko-en opened in 1992 and features nine different Japanese-style gardens that are connected through gates, water streams and small ponds. Inside the garden, there’s also a tea house called Soju-an . Here, you can enjoy the garden scenery while savouring a cup of green tea and traditional Japanese sweets.

Kōko-en Garden is usually open from 9 AM to 5 PM (last access at 5.30 PM) but the admission hours can slightly vary depending on the time of the year.

During cherry blossom and autumn foliage season, you can see the entire garden lit up at night. Moreover, there are some other annual events and exhibitions to attend. For more information, check out their official website .

Before taking the train back to Kyoto or Osaka, there’s still some time left to find a good restaurant and shop for some souvenirs.

Miyuki Shopping Street is a roofed arcade conveniently located between Himeji Castle and JR Himeji Station. You can find various restaurants, cafés and shops selling local souvenirs here.

With this, our Himeji itinerary slowly comes to an end. Depending on your connection, take the train back from JR Himeji Station or Sanyo-Himeji Station.

How to Get to Himeji Castle from Osaka

Luckily, it’s super easy to get to Himeji Castle from Osaka. You have different options, depending on how much money and time you want to spend on transportation.

The fastest (albeit most expensive) way to get to Himeji is by Shinkansen. Take the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka Station to reach JR Himeji Station within 30 minutes for around ¥4,000. When using the JR Pass , this is definitely the most convenient travel method.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, you should avoid going by Shinkansen. From Osaka Station or Shin-Osaka Station, the special rapid trains on the Tokaido-Sanyo Line will bring you to Himeji within around one hour for ¥1,520. Don’t confuse this train line with the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen.

From Osaka-Umeda Station, you can reach Sanyo-Himeji Station within around two hours by Hanshin Line for ¥1,320.

If you happen to travel to Himeji directly from Kansai International Airport , the Himeji Tourist Pass might be another option worth considering. You can purchase this special ticket for ¥2,400 in the Kansai Tourist Information Centre in Terminal 1.

The Himeji Tourist Pass gives you a one-way ride from Kansai International Airport to Namba Station on the Nankai Electric Railway Line, a one-day ticket for unlimited train rides with the Hanshin Electric Railway and the Sanyo Electric Railway, as well as discounts for over 40 participating facilities.

With the first ticket, you cannot exit the train before Namba Station on your way from the airport.

The ticket for the Hanshin Electric Railway and the Sanyo Electric Railway is valid for 24 hours , starting with your first ride from Osaka-Namba Station. This means you can stay in Namba overnight and use the one-day ticket to Himeji on the next day.

On your way to Himeji, you can get off the train in Kobe and Akashi for sightseeing.

You can find more information on the ticket conditions here .

How to Get to Himeji Castle from Kyoto

From Kyoto, you will need a little longer to reach Himeji than from Osaka.

A one-way trip to Himeji by Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen from Kyoto Station takes approximately 50 minutes and costs around ¥5,000. Again, this is the most efficient travel method when using the JR Pass .

If you want to save money, take one of the regular trains departing from Kyoto Station. The special rapid trains on the Tokaido-Sanyo Line reach Himeji in 1 hour and 40 minutes for a fare of ¥2,310 Yen.

You can also book a fully planned Himeji guided day tour from Kyoto or Osaka – this includes transport.

Is Himeji Castle Worth Visiting?

Himeji Castle is totally worth visiting and makes for a great day trip destination all year round. Known for its elegant appearance and delicate architectural details, it’s said to be the most beautiful castle in Japan.

JR Pass users benefit from the short travel time thanks to the Shinkansen connection from Osaka and Kyoto. When travelling from Kansai to Hiroshima by train, it’s also super easy to add a quick stop in Himeji on the way. It truly is one of the best things to do in Japan .

However, Himeji can seem a little far off when not using the Shinkansen (especially from Kyoto). If you’re travelling to Japan on a tight schedule, a closer day trip destination like Nara could be a better choice. This is also true in case you’re more interested in temples than castles.

Overall, you won’t need more than half a day to one full day to visit Himeji. Himeji Castle is indeed the main attraction to see.

Conclusion – Himeji Day Trip

A day trip to Himeji Castle from Osaka or Kyoto can be a beautiful addition to a Japan itinerary for everyone who’d like to leave Japan’s main cities for a while.

Cherry blossom season is the most popular time to visit Himeji Castle. The pink petals compliment the white-grey castle exterior perfectly and make for an absolutely stunning view. It can get crowded at this time of the year, so be prepared to potentially wait in line.

During our exploration of the Kansai area, one place that was on our radar was Himeji ( 姫路市) city. Since it’s a quick day trip from Osaka or Kyoto via train and famous for its gorgeous white castle, Himeji Castle, we had to see this area for ourselves.

With this Himeji day trip itinerary, we’re sharing helpful information on how to get to Himeji, what to expect with your day in Himeji, the top attractions to visit, and more!

If you have the chance, we suggest visiting Himeji on a weekday so you don’t need to worry about the crowds at the castle. Depending on your schedule, you can spend either a half-day or a full day exploring the Himeji sights.

How to Get to Himeji

If you’re based in Osaka or Kyoto, you can easily visit Himeji as a day trip. You could also visit as a day trip from Tokyo but it would be a long journey and isn’t as recommended. We’ll share the directions below on how to visit Himeji via the shinkansen bullet train or local train.

To use the shinkansen, purchase the Japan Rail (JR) pass if you plan to travel long distances during your Japan itinerary. You’ll need to buy the pass before arriving in Japan and exchange the voucher for the pass on arrival. It’s convenient to use as you can use the pass for any railways along the JR line. Plus, you can reserve seats in advance when using the shinkansen so you’re guaranteed a seat. You won’t be able to use the JR pass for the Nozomi or Mizuho lines but you’ll take either Sakura or Hikari lines which will get you to your destination in no time!

Buy your discounted JR pass here.

From Osaka to Himeji

From Osaka Station ( 大阪駅) , take the local train via Tokaido-Sanyo Line to go to Shin-Osaka Station ( 新大阪駅 ). This will take five minutes. From there, you can go on either of the routes below.

Shinkansen route: From Shin-Osaka Station, take the shinkansen train to Himeji Station. This will take another 43 minutes.

Local train route: From Shin-Osaka Station, take the Tokaido-Sanyo Line rapid train to go to Himeji Station. It’ll take about 1 hour and 8 minutes one-way.

From Kyoto to Himeji

Shinkansen route: From Kyoto Station ( 京都駅) , take the shinkansen to Shin-Osaka Station. This will take 14 minutes. At Shin-Osaka Station, transfer to another shinkansen train to go to Himeji Station. This will take another 43 minutes. You’ll need a total of 1 hour and 2 minutes for the one-way ride.

Local train route: Another option is to take the JR special rapid train line via the Tokaido-Sanyo Line from Kyoto Station to Himeji Station. It’ll take 1 hour and 30 minutes.

From Tokyo to Himeji

Take the local train to either Tokyo Station ( 東京駅) or Shinagawa Station ( 品川駅) . Hop on the shinkansen headed to Okayama and arrive at Himeji Station. The ride will take 3 hours 36 minutes from Tokyo Station or 3 hours and 30 minutes from Shinagawa Station. As you can see, it’ll take a while to arrive to Himeji as a day trip so you may consider staying overnight here.

How to Travel Around Himeji

From Himeji Station to the Himeji Castle area, you can easily walk there. It’ll take 20 minutes as it’s 1.5 kilometers away (.93 miles).

To visit other areas, take the Himeji city bus. Check out this helpful guide on which bus lines to take from various sightseeing spots.

Where to Store Your Luggage

If you have luggage or large day packs and need a place to store them, there are coin-operated lockers at the Himeji Station. If you take the shinkansen, there are lockers in the shinkansen area. Or, there are lockers near the entrances to the station.

The daily rental cost varies depending on the size you need – 400 yen ($3.70) for a small locker, 500 yen ($4.60) for medium, and 700 yen ($6.50) for large. The larger ones will fit one rolling luggage.

As a reminder, don’t lose your locker key! You’ll need it to retrieve your luggage at the end of the day.

Since we visited Himeji as a stopover before heading to Okayama later in the evening, it was convenient to use the lockers.

What to Do on Your Himeji Day Trip

1. visit himeji castle..

With this Himeji 1 day itinerary, we’re starting the day with a visit to the famous Himeji Castle (姫路城). As Japan’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Outstanding Universal Value, Himeji Castle is recognized for its 17th-century Japanese architecture and stunning white exterior (made out of plaster). It’s no wonder this castle is also referred to as “Hakurojo” (White Heron Castle) as it looks like a white heron flying in the sky.

The castle was built in 1601 and finished in 1609. It survived many battles and political unrest with feudal lords. In modern times, Himeji experienced air raids during World War II yet the castle survived. The castle was restored from 2009-2015 using the original building techniques in the 17th century.

You’ll need a few hours to explore the castle grounds and read the history as this place is HUGE! Luckily you don’t need to worry about any time limit so you can explore as fast or slow as you want.

The castle highlights include the following:

  • Take a photo at the Sangoku Bori (moat) which has the Himeji Castle in the background. You can’t miss this perfect photo spot. You’ll pass the large Hishi Gate near the entrance and will see the moat.

Jackie Szeto and Justin Huynh, Life Of Doing, spend the day in Himeji, Japan and take a photo at the Sangoku Bori moat in the Himeji Castle area.

During your Himeji day trip, check out this postcard perfect photo spot in Himeji Castle.

  • Walk through the Main Keep . This is the main building of the castle that has seven floors (one of the floors is the basement). The interior is empty as there isn’t any furniture, so it could be a letdown for some visitors. However, there is some unique architecture to observe when navigating through the floors such as the large wooden pillars between the floors and random secret doors and cabinets. We think that this would have been an exciting place to play the “Hide and Seek” game with the many hiding spots.

From the windows, you can see the city view of Himeji and the surrounding area. You’ll notice that the windows are narrow to prevent arrows and bullets from entering.

Himeji Castle Main Keep Tips

  • If you have knee or mobility issues, you may want to skip the walk inside the Main Keep as there aren’t any elevators. Most of the time, you’ll need to climb up narrow stairs and hold onto the handrail.
  • To preserve the floors, everyone must take off their shoes and wear special slippers. Guests are provided with a plastic bag to store shoes.
  • The castle is cold inside since the windows are open. You’ll need to wear a jacket during the wintertime.
  • On your way outside of the Main Keep, there is another good photo spot in the Honmaru Bailey area . You can also rest on the benches here to enjoy views of the Main Keep.
  • Explore the Hyakken Roka (Long connecting corridor). Located to the left of the Main Keep, there is a long hallway that is only one level. It’s more interactive than the Main Keep since you can see videos of the restoration process of the Himeji Castle. We also liked how this place wasn’t as crowded as the Main Keep since it’s a bit hidden. You’ll need to remove your shoes and wear their slippers here as well.

A long and empty hallway in the Hyakken Roka part of the Himeji Castle.

Visit the Hyakken Roka area when you explore Himeji Castle.

Justin Huynh, from Life Of Doing, holds up the combination ticket of the Himeji Castle and Koko-en Garden.

2. stroll through koko-en garden..

Located on the Himeji Castle premise, Koko-en Garden (好古園) is a tranquil Japanese garden that has nine different themes. Built in 1992, this 3.5 hectares garden was the former site of the Nishi-Oyashiki, feudal lord’s West Residence area.

Visiting the garden is a nice complement to the castle as you get some nature and greenery in your Himeji itinerary. Although many of the trees didn’t blossom during our visit in January, we can see how this garden would be gorgeous during the spring season with the cherry blossoms and fall season with the foliage .

The best thing to do here is to walk around the different gardens and soak in their beauty. Our favorite areas include the Cho-on-sai guest house where you see a waterfall and also an overlook of the lake. There is a bridge to cross over the pond which is a nice photo spot. We also enjoyed the garden of the Lord’s residence since hundreds of colorful carps are in the pond. Some of the smaller gardens also had carp in their ponds.

Koko-en Garden is a top attraction to visit while you're in Himeji, Japan. The view of the bridge over the pond and the koi in the pond is beautiful.

If you have time in your Himeji one day itinerary, check out Koko-en Garden.

Other highlights of the area include visiting the Souju-an tea ceremony house to drink matcha tea and gaze at the gorgeous view of the Himeji Castle. You can also enjoy a refreshing meal at the Kassui-ken restaurant for traditional Japanese meals such as grilled conger eel ( anago ) over rice, soba noodles, and bento boxes. You must make reservations in advance.

Opening Hours: 9:00am-5:00pm (January-April & September-December), 9:00am-6:00pm (May-August)

Admission Cost:

  • Koko-en Garden admission: 310 yen ($2.90) adults, 150 yen ($1.40) elementary to high school students
  • Himeji Castle and Koko-en Garden admission: 1,050 yen ($9.70) adults, 360 yen ($3.30) elementary to high school students

How to Get There: Unfortunately, the garden isn’t connected with the castle since there is another admission cost. You’ll need to exit the castle, cross the bridge, turn right and walk on the main street for a few minutes to get to the entrance of the garden.

3. Buy some gifts along Shopping Streets.

On your way back to Himeji Station, there are several covered shopping streets such as Nishi Nikaimachi. There was a sign that mentioned “Gourmet Street” which offered BBQ, sweets, sushi, and other delicious foods. It looked intriguing but we didn’t have a chance to explore further. As with any of the shopping streets in Japan, you’ll find plenty of restaurants and local shops.

Nishi Nikaimachi Shopping Street is a fabulous spot to visit when you're in Himeji, Japan.

Nishi Nikaimachi Shopping Street was quiet on our initial visit.

Other Himeji Attractions to Visit

With our one day in Himeji, we couldn’t see everything. Here are other places on our Himeji bucket list for a return trip.

1. Hike Mount Shosha

One place that we regretfully missed was the opportunity to hike Mount Shosha ( 書写山). As one of the best hiking trails in Japan , Mount Shosha is 371 meters (1,217 feet) high. You’ll need a few hours to do the round trip hike from the ropeway station. All you need to do is follow the sign and look out for these words, 登山道, in Japanese and you’ll be on your way up the mountain. You can also take the Mount Shosha ropeway which is a cable car that’ll take you to the summit. More information is below.

The must-visit temple on Mount Shosha is Shoshazan Engyo-ji ( 書写山圓教寺) . This temple was founded in the year 966 and practices the Tendai sect of Buddhism. If you’ve seen the movie, The Last Samurai, you’ll recognize several scenes that were shot at this location. Currently, visitors enjoy the peaceful temple area.

Shoshazan Engyo-ji Address : 2968 Shosha, Himeji, Hyogo 671-2201, Japan (〒671-2201 兵庫県姫路市書写2968)

  • Ropeway and bus ticket (Shoshazan ropeway set ticket): 1,420 yen adults ($13.20), 710 yen ($6.60) children. You can buy this combo ticket at the Shinki Bus Himeji Station Information Center.
  • Shoshazan Engyo-ji : 500 yen ($4.60)

How to Get There: To get to the Mount Shosha ropeway, take Bus #8 from Shinki Bus Himeji Station or Himeji Castle’s Himejijo Otemonmae stop (about 100 meters to the right of the castle intersection).

2. taiyo park.

Taiyo Park (太陽公園) is a quirky place to visit in Himeji. It’s a theme park that has replicas of well-known landmarks in the world. You can visit the replicas of the terracotta army from Xi’an, China, Neuschwanstein Castle from Germany, Great Wall of China, and more. Another interesting attraction is seeing Buddha embedded in a giant rock at 25 meters (82 feet) high.

Where to eat in himeji.

There are many restaurants close to Himeji Castle and Himeji Station to try. If you need ideas on what to eat in Japan, check out our Japanese food post!

We tried to go to Memme ( 讃岐うどん めんめ) to eat udon, but they were closed during our visit.

Instead, we went to Spice Suehiro which is an adorable curry shop . Opened in 2015, Spice Suehiro has a limited menu and offers three types of curry a day. During our visit, there was chicken, shrimp curry, and tofu with lentils. You can do a half-half plate for any two flavors. The menu is in Japanese but the servers are helpful with explaining what each item is.

While this place doesn’t serve traditional Japanese curry, the flavors are spot on. The chicken curry and vegetarian curry had Indian spices while the shrimp curry had Thai flavors.

The second level of the building has gifts that you can purchase.

Address: 68-42 Honmachi, Himeji, 兵庫県 Hyogo 670-0012, Japan (〒670-0012 兵庫県姫路市本町68-42)

Food Price: 900-1,200 yen ($8.40-$11.15). Cash only

Check out Spice Suehiro as a place to eat in Himeji, Japan. They sere delicious curries.

Spice Suehiro’s half-half curry combinations are delicious!

If you want freshly baked bread as a snack, head to Bakery Lamp ( ベーカリー ランプ ). They have delicious baked goods such as fruit danishes, croissants, red bean buns, and sesame buns with mentaiko (pollack roe) and potato. They also serve cooked foods such as burgers and chili fries. This place is off the main street so it can be a bit tricky to find.

Opening Hours: 10:00am-7:00pm (Tuesday-Saturday), 10:00am-6:00pm (Sunday). Closed every Monday and second Tuesday.

Food Price: 300-600+ yen ($2.80-$5.60+). Credit card accepted.

Your Himeji day trip has come to an end. Now you can return to your home base whether it’s in Osaka or Kyoto and remember your awesome time at Himeji. If you’re continuing your Japan trip and heading west, check out Kobe to try some Kobe beef or Okayama to see the Okayama Castle. Enjoy the rest of your Japan trip!

travel time osaka to himeji

I know so little about Japan so sadly I had not even heard of Himeji, Japan! But I have to say that seeing the Himeji Castle and gardens looks definitely bucket list worthy! How beautiful is that entire complex. Also, being an avid hiker, I think I would definitely have to add a hike up Mount Shosha to my list of things to do in Himeji. I loved the movie, Last Samurai, so that would definitely be a highlight to hike up to the old Buddhist temple.

Himeji Castle was the most impressive castle that we’ve seen in Japan! Hope you can visit Japan once the travel restrictions have been lifted.

travel time osaka to himeji

I remember how big this place was! I also can’t believe there are like no people in your photos…there were so many when I was there! Thanks for sharing. 🙂

Hi Cherrod. We were surprised how big Himeji Castle was! We went on a weekday so there were fewer people at the castle.

travel time osaka to himeji

It is unfortunate that you didn’t get to hike Mount Shosha. I love hiking, but have never seen a temple, so this would have killed 2 birds with one stone for me.

Hi Kelly. Once we’re able to travel again, we’ll return to Himeji to conquer Mount Shosha. The mountain is waiting for us!

travel time osaka to himeji

Jackie, this looks like such and incredible day trip. I’d love to see Himeji Castle, it looks STUNNING in your photos. I’m putting the castle and gardens on my bucket list – just need to be able to travel again! 🙂

Thanks Derek! Himeji is a fun place to explore when you’re in the Kansai area of Japan.

Very useful tips on how to get to Himeji from different places in Japan, great for backpackers. Himeji Castle looks so pretty, good to know where the top photo spots are. There is something very calming about Japanese gardens, I’d love to wander round the Koko-en Garden. Shame you missed hiking Mount Shosha and seeing the temple, that would be high on my list.

Hi Vanessa. I feel like there is never enough time to explore Japan. Will return to Osaka to make another day trip to Himeji!

travel time osaka to himeji

What a beautiful virtual journey I was able to take thanks to this informative travel guide and stunning photographs! I’ve yet to travel to Japan, but when I do, will be sure to include a day trip to Himeji. The view of the castle from Sangoku Bori is amazing and I think a highlight for me would be taking a stroll through Koko-en Garden. Thanks for the tip regarding visiting Himeji on a weekday to avoid crowds and about all the admission costs – certainly helpful for trip planning.

You’re welcome Aditi. Hope you can make it out to Japan soon!

How to access to Himeji and Kobe from Osaka

travel time osaka to himeji

Himeji castle is National Treasure, National Heritage Building, one of the best 100 castles in Japan and UNESCO World Heritage Site. I think this castle is most well known and popular castle in Japan and I believe everybody agree with me.

You can travel Himeji from Osaka as easy day trip. In this post, I would like to explain about the access to Himeji by several kinds of trains. Since Kobe is located on the way to Himeji, I also mention about Kobe. You can drop by when you go to Himeji easily.

Route and access

Let’s see the location map. Please see the map below:

Access map for trip to Himeji (Click to enlarge)

There are three ways to get there.

The Shinkansen — trip time 30 to 45 minutes (from Shin-Osaka ) / 3,130 yen (base fare and non reserved seat surcharge by Hikari, Sakura or Kodama) JR Special Rapid train — average trip time 61 minutes (direct access from Osaka/Umeda) / 1,490 yen fare Hanshin-Sanyo Railway Limited Express from Umeda — average trip time 95 minutes (direct access) / 1,280 yen fare

Shinkansen is the fastest train obviously, but expensive. And you have to go to Shin-Osaka to catch Shinkansen. Let’s see the available deals and frequency.

Tokaido Shinkansen

Shinkansen is the fastest way to get Himeji if you can catch the fastest run. There are several kinds of Shinkansen train on this segment, Nozomi, Mmizuho, Hikari, Sakura and Kodama. Kodama stops at all stations and takes sometimes 45 minutes to get Himeji from Shin-Osaka because Kodama waits for other faster trains on the way to Himeji.

If you take this “slow” train Kodama, it’s not much different from JR Special Rapid train. Because you will spend 5 minutes to get Shin-Osaka from Osaka by local train. And you will spend another 5 minutes at least to transfer from local train to Shinkansen. It will be 55 minutes and not much different from Special Rapid trip time 61 minutes.

If you intend to use Japan Rail Pass , Kansai WIDE Area Pass or Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass , Sanyo Sanin Area Pass, Shinkansen surcharge is covered by these deals. *Kansai WIDE Area Pass and Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass cover only non reserved seat.

But if you will purchase single ticket, the fare is more than double of Special Rapid train. I don’t think it is not worth taking Shinkansen for such a short trip. Special Rapid is better train service in my opinion.

JR Special Rapid train

Special Rapid Service operated by JR West 223 series.

This train is most popular and the fastest commute service between Osaka and Himeji. You can catch this train by base fare only. And if you use Kansai Area Pass , this train is your choice. Of course other rail passes, Japan Rail Pass, Kansai WIDE Area Pass and Sanyo Area Pass cover this train too. Please see the link below to get more details about Special Rapid train service.

Most convenient and the fastest train among Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe. Special Rapid Service

If you purchase single ticket from Osaka to Himeji, the fare is 1,490 yen. If you purchase Kansai Area Pass one day, the price is 2,200 yen (online advance purchase price). Kansai Area Pass is the best deal to Himeji from Osaka by Special Rapid train.

Hanshi/Sanyo Railway’s Limited Express

Hanshin Railway connects Umeda and Kobe. The train go through Sanyo Railway to Sanyo-Himeji station.

Hanshin Railway is one of major private railway companies between Umeda and Sannomiya, Motomachi in Kobe. And also Hanshin Railway connects Osaka- Namba station with Amagasaki.

Sanyo Railway connects Himeji and Kobe area. Both Hanshin and Sanyo go through each other and both companies operate direct train service from Umeda to Himeji. But this is much slower than JR Special Rapid train. You will spend at least 30 minutes more than Special Rapid train if you move from Umeda (same location as JR Osaka station ) to Himeji.

If you use Kansai Thru Pass , you cannot take any JR trains. Hanshin-Sanyo direct train is only you choice. The round trip fare is 2,560 yen. It is worth using Kansai Thru Pass for the trip to Himeji from Umeda.

If you stay in Namba, you can catch Hanshin Railway train at Osaka-Namba station. The transfer at Amagasaki station is usually same platform and very easy. If you use Kansai Thru Pass, you can take subway Midousuji line to Umeda and transfer to Hanshin Railway at Umeda. In this case, you have to exit subway station and enter Hanshin Railway station. Transfer at Amagasaki is much easier than changing train at Umeda. And the difference of trip time between Hanshin-Sanyo and JR is smaller if you start from Namba. As I mentioned, JR Special Rapid is much faster but you need to get Umeda by subway from Namba. If you take Hanshin railway, you can change trains at Amagasaki and it is transfer in the station. JR Special Rapid is still faster but the difference is 10 to 15 minutes. It is not a big issue.

This train is “Limited Express” but no express surcharge is required. This is same type of trains as Special Rapid.

In the map above, there is Hankyu Railway between Umeda and Sannomiya. You can take this train by Kansai Thru Pass too. But any Hankyu trains do not go through Sanyo Railway line. So it is not convenient and not recommended either.

Himeji station

Sanyo-Himeji station is located at the north side of JR Himeji station. It is 20 minutes away from Himeji station by walk. Please find the detailed about Himeji station and how to access to Himeji castle at the link below:

Himeji station guide. How to get Himeji castle from the station

Drop by Kobe

Sannomiya is the core place of Kobe. You can take any train other than Shinkansen to drop by Kobe. But if you go to Kobe only, any kinds of passes do not work. Single ticket is much cheaper than any deals.

Dear Takeshi,

Thank you so much for your helpful article. I am staying at Shinsaibashi and I would like to go to Himeji Castle with my Kansai Thru Pass. May I check with you:

1) Where can I find the train timing and frequency of the Hanshin Sanyo Limited Express Train? I am hoping to reach Himeji by 930am.

2) You mentioned it is more convenient to transfer at Amagasaki Station. However, Umeda is the first station of the railway line. Will it be easier to get a seat if I take the train from Umeda instead of Amagasaki?

3) Do I need to make any transfers (for instance to get off the train and board another train) along the whole line from Umeda/ Amagasaki to Sanyo-Himeji Station? I am confused when I see the map ( https://www.hanshin.co.jp/global/en/map/map.html ) where it shows different line colours.

Greatly appreciate all your help!

1. You may use Hyperdia to find the timetable: https://jprail.com/travel-informations/basic-informations/timetable-and-reservation/hyperdia-perfect-guide-train-timetable-and-route-search-engine.html

2. You can take the subway to Umeda from Shinsaibashi and take Hanshin railway from Umeda.

3. If you can catch the limited express train from Umeda, you may get Himeji directly. Use hyperdia to find it. When you use Hyperdia, click “more option” and check “Ordinary train” and “Private railway” only. You can find the train schedule. It shows sometimes you have to change trains at Kosokukobe and/or Nishidai. But as long as the train name is “Hanshin/Sanyo Through Ltd. Exp. for SANYOHIMEJI”, it is direct and change trains is not required.

Thank you so much Takeshi!

Is the kansai thru pass appropriate? Do i need an ICOCA card? Thanks

Kansai thru pass is a good choice. But you should use it for day 4, 5 and 7. You may use city bus pass for day 6. https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/how-to-choose-the-best-train-pass-for-sightseeing-in-kyoto.html

You can pay the regular fare when you take a subway and a train in Kyoto. You can buy ICOCA or Kansai one pass instead. https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-residents/what-is-ic-card-suica-icoca-pasmo-how-to-use-these-cards.html

Thanks for your promt reply. Can I take JR Haruka airport express from kyoto station to KIX airport?

If you buy ICOCA or Kansai one pass, you can take Haruka at the discounted rate. https://jprail.com/travel-informations/other-rail-passes/rail-pass-for-visitors/icoca-and-haruka-ticket-very-flexible-and-good-deal-for-tourist-who-stay-in-kansai.html

Kansai thru pass does not cover it.

' src=

hi, thank you for your post, I don’t want to take the Kansai thru pass, I would like to find the cheapest way from Osaka to Himeji in one day go and back, in your post you talk about this : Hanshin-Sanyo Railway Limited Express from Umeda — average trip time 95 minutes (direct access) / 1280 yen fare

1280 is perfect, what is the name of this pass/ticket please ? can I go from Osaka center to Himeji with this way ? or I have to go to Umeda ?

if I take this pass ” Hankyu-Hanshin 1 Day Pass” found on this web site : https://www.hanshin.co.jp/global/en/ticket/ can I go from Osaka to Himeji ? it’s say : Hanshin Electric Railway: All lines Hankyu Railway: All lines Kobe Kosoku : All lines

thank you very much for your time and help

Hi Vincent,

1,280 yen is a regular fare. It is not a pass. Just go to Umeda station and you can purchase a ticket at the vending machine.

Hanshin-Hankyu one day pass does not cover Himeji. If you use this pass, you have to add the fare for Nishidai to Himeji which is 810 yen for one way. If you add 810 yen X 2 (round trip) on top of Hanshin Hankyu one day pass, it is higher than a regular fare. So the regular fare is the best choice.

Thanks you very much for your reply, how i go to Umeda from Osaka center ? Thank you for you time Vincent

Namba may be closer than Umeda. You can take Hashin railway at Osaka-Namba. Please see the link below to find the location: https://jprail.com/travel-informations/tips-for-japan-rail-pass/guide-to-take-trains-in-osaka-how-to-choose-the-best-route-by-train-to-get-the-major-spots.html

With a number of things to do in Himeji, a one day trip from Osaka will require a good plan to see the best of the place. Our itinerary will guide you through it.

Himeji is notable for its famous white-egret Castle, the 400 years old Himeji Castle. It lies in the heart of the Harima Plain and only 40 mins from Kobe or 70 mins from Osaka. Most people use Kobe or Osaka as a base to visit Himeji, and it is a good idea as it can be covered in a one-day trip. However, if you have the time, spending more days in Himeji would also be a nice option.

Getting to Himeji from Osaka: Take the JR Tokaido-Sanyo line from Osaka Station to Himeji Station. Journey time is 1 hour and 35 mins.

Travel tip: The best value deal is to buy the Kansai Area Pass as the one day pass is cheaper than a round-trip train fare itself! Just remember to bring your passport along to the train station to purchase your pass.

Himeji is a quiet little town with the white castle standing tall in the middle of it. Once you arrive at the place, you will feel a sense of serenity and would be compelled to explore the place slowly. Ironically, that is not really the pace for a one day trip but still doable if you choose 2 out of the 3 activities suggested below.

Himeji Castle, Himeji, Japan

Himeji Castle, Himeji. Photo by Francisco Anzola

Himeji Castle (Himeji-jo)

The Himeji Castle is built in the 17th century where the technology of the original castle construction is said to be at the zenith of Japan technology. It is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993, the very first in Japan. Its elegant finished with white lime plasters had always been compared to the flying white egret (Hakuro). To the locals, it is sometimes also known as the Hakuro Castle. Recently the castle is reopened in 2015 after a 5 and a half years renovation, now it is the time to visit this amazing castle. The architecture itself is one to marvel with and to be studied closely when one had the chance. Though the entrance fee is quite steep at 1000 yen in 2015. Visiting this castle extensively would easily take half a day.

Koko-en Garden, Himeji Castle, Himeji, Japan

Koko-en Garden

If you add another 360 yen to the Himeji Castle ticket you will be granted access to its garden, the Koko-en garden. You may also buy a separate ticket only to access the garden. It is a Japanese garden featuring paths around bonds. This beautiful garden, as true to all good gardens in Japan, is built on the former site of the second residence of the Himeji clan lord and boasts 9 various sized traditional gardens. The tea ceremony room Soju-an and Kassui-ken restaurant are also in the garden. If you are looing for a relaxing place after a long exploration of the Himeji Castle, you may find a respite here drinking tea in the serene surroundings of the zen garden.

Shoshazan Engyo-ji Temple, Himeji, Japan

Shoshazan Engyo-ji Temple

If you have the time to spare still, or if you have decided not to spend too much time at the Himeji castle and its garden, then this temple up in the serene mountains is highly recommended. Here lie the Tendai Sect temples with a history of more than 1000 years. It consists of three magnificent buildings and several Buddhist statues around the twist and turns of the top of the mountain. The main hall reminded me of the Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto, with its terrace expanding outwards into the sky, but minus the crowd and added the grandeur. The temple is still used actively for prayers and if you are lucky you will get to witness one. The place is also popular for being part of the sites where “The Last Samurai” has been filmed.

From Himeji Castle to Engyo-ji temple – take the bus from Himeji-jyo Otemon Mae, bus No.8 to Sanjo-eki station and then 4 minutes with the Shosazan ropeway (900 roundtrips). Plus the entrance fee is 500 yen (as of 2015). Travel tip : if you are up for it, then hike up through the beautiful mountain path which will take around 1 hour. This would also save you the money for the ropeway but if you are looking to save even more, a secret tip is to hike up the other route, which is steeper and less beautiful with car access (only for monks/officials) but you will bypass the entrance fee booth!

Here you have it, a one-day itinerary for a quick day trip to Himeji from Osaka (or even Kobe if you are there) with the main things you must do, attractions to see and some travel tips for your trip.

If tourists want to sample some of the greatest cuisine and beverages Japan has to offer, they should head over to Osaka , a seaside city famed for its incredible nightlife and outstanding cuisine. Tokyo's big-city energy is also present here but on a little lesser scale. This way, tourists can visit cities in Japan other than Tokyo and Kyoto while having the same vibes and escaping the crowds. Tourists are recommended to visit the Osaka Castle and Park in between all of their eating and exploring. It is one of the most well-known sights in Japan and is definitely worth visiting.

  • Some attractions: Tempozan Ferris Wheel, Universal Studio Japan, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, etc.

The island of Naoshima, which is reachable via ferry, is a wonderful location. The area is referred to as the art island, and tourists may find galleries, sculptures, and installations everywhere they go, especially if they stay at the upscale Benesse House, which serves as both a hotel and a museum of modern art. On the island, there are two towns, both of which include charming stores and little restaurants. There are also sea views everywhere, which enhances the tranquil atmosphere.

  • Some attractions: The Yellow Pumpkin, Chichu Art Museum, Naoshima Public Bath I Love Yu, etc.

Home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site castle , Himeji is worth a special trip for the Himeji-jo castle alone. Widely considered to be the finest example of 17th-century feudal-era Japanese architecture that still survives, Himeji-jo may be the reason tourists visit this city in Japan, but Himeji gives them several reasons to stay. On the outskirts of the city is the picturesque Mount Shosha, with a Buddhist temple at its peak. And if a hike isn’t someone’s cup of tea, tourists can spend a day at the Kokoen garden, which is made of nine walled gardens connected by a network of streams, waterfalls, and ponds and sits on the former feudal lord’s residence.

  • Some attractions: Himeji Castle, Engyoji, Himeji Central Park, etc.

Matsue’s location on a peninsula by the Sea of Japan with Lake Shinji on its west and Lake Nakaumi on the east has given the city another name: The City of Water. While the water bodies that surround it have given Matsue its second name, there are also water bodies within the city. Canals with boat tours for tourists flow through the city, old samurai houses flank its streets, and Matsue is home to one of only twelve medieval castles that are preserved in their original state in Japan. But that’s not all: the city has long attracted curious travelers with its rich myths and legends related to Matsue being the place where Japanese gods descend.

  • Some attractions: Matsue-jō Castle, Yuushien, Yaegaki Shrine, etc.

Yokohama is the second-largest Japanese city and the first to have opened its ports to the world at the end of the Edo Period. The port city quickly transformed from a small fishing village to a major city when foreign trade introduced new cultures to the old Japanese traditions of the village. As a result, Yokohama offers a contrast between old and new, and travelers can explore the streets of Yokohama to see the Western influence on the Japanese way of life everywhere. Tourists can visit traditional Japanese gardens and tea rooms, ramen and instant cup noodle museums, giant ferry wheels reminiscent of the London Eye, and one of the largest Chinatowns in the whole country.

  • Some attractions: Shin Yokohama Ramen Museum, Yokohama Chinatown, Yokohama Cosmoworld, etc.

For those who like the crowds of Tokyo but wish for a city just a tad more quite than the Japanese capital, Fukuoka’s contemporary attractions make it the ideal city. Fukuoka is Japan’s eighth most populous city and balances urban life with the natural beauty that is synonymous with Japan. The port city is filled with hot springs, hike trails, tea plantations, and sake breweries. But the best part, perhaps, is the fact that Fukuoka happens to be the city that invented tonkatsu ramen , so for those who’d like to slurp their way through Japan via its ramen, Fukuoka has to be the starting place.

  • Some attractions: Ohori Park, Marine World, Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, etc.

Hokkaido is an island region of Japan that is known for its hot springs, ski mountains, and volcanoes. Hakodate — located on the island’s southern tip — is one of the largest cities in Hokkaido and was voted Japan’s most attractive city in 2015. Visitors can hike to Mount Hakodate and enjoy spectacular views of the city surrounded by the sea, soak in the hot springs, go down ski slopes, or take in the views of the Mount Komagatake volcano from the lakes of Onuma Park. The best part of the port city, however, is its food. Surrounded by the sea, Hakodate is famous for its freshly-caught seafood, and the Hakodate Morning Market is the best place to enjoy it.

  • Some attractions: Goryokaku, Goryokaku Tower, Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, etc.

Kyoto isn’t the only city in Japan famous for its Buddhist monasteries and temples. Formerly known as Heijo-Kyo , Nara was once Japan’s capital city and is now home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites . The Horyuji Area of Nara was the first to be on the list and includes 48 Buddhist sites, all of which are of immense importance to the Japanese culture and religion. Also on the list are areas with several temples and historical monuments from ancient times when Nara was still the capital, as well as pilgrimage routes and sites on the Kii Mountain. Tourists can end their tour of the temples and spiritual sites of Nara with a friendly visit to greet the deers at the Nara Park or stroll through Imaicho — a merchant town preserved from the Edo period that will take everyone back in time.

  • Some attractions: Today-ji, Nara Park, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, etc.

Nagasaki is most often associated with the atomic bomb and the tragedy that followed. Still, the city has a lot more to offer beyond the Atomic Bomb Museum and the Nagasaki Peace Park, which attract most tourists. Not only is the city home to several stunning islands off its coast, but Nagasaki has consistently ranked on top of the list of places with the best night views in Japan . Travelers can hop onto a ropeway to the peak of Mount Inasa and enjoy spectacular views of Nagasaki as it lights up after sunset. More surprisingly, however, Japan’s first and oldest Chinatown happens to be in Nagasaki, and it has continued to serve Japanese-Chinese fusion foods since the 17th century.

For those whose idea of a holiday in Japan includes spending hours soaking in hot water springs, Beppu is the place to be. Beppu’s gushes of hot spring water rank second highest in the world and the highest in Japan, gushing more than 100,000 liters of water each minute through thousands of hot springs. Not only does the abundance of hot springs make Beppu the Onsen City of Japan, but Beppu also has several boiling ponds known as Jigoku or hell. Locals use these Jigoku ponds for cooking food as well, giving rise to a culinary custom known as Jigoku-Mushi, or hell-steaming, that is peculiar to Beppu.

Takayama is several things: A city surrounded by the Japanese Alps, Japan’s ski destination, home to bustling morning markets and festivals dating back to the 1600s, and a place where Japanese tradition flourishes through some of the country’s most beautifully preserved villages. Takayama’s Sanmachi area, in particular, houses preserved thatched-roof houses from which antique dealers and artisans sell their wares, and hidden cafes and brewers dish out hot coffees and icy sake to any visitors who manage to spot them.

The city that served as the seat of the second most powerful feudal clan in Japan during the Edo period, Kanazawa has always been a place of great cultural significance in Japan. More importantly, Kanazawa was the second largest city after Kyoto, which managed to remain safe from the bombings of World War II. As a result, most of the city’s old castles, gardens, samurai, and geisha districts have survived the test of time. That being said, Kanazawa also houses the iconic 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art and is the city where traditional teahouses and crafts, including Kaga-yuzen (a silk dying technique), ohi ware (tea ceremony bowls), and gold leaf production continue to prosper.
