  • Trek fuel EX9 rear wheel removal help…

Mate has just bought one of these and cant figure out how to remove rear wheel….I have a fuel ex7 but mine is a std quick release…..I havent seen the bike up close so not sure which system its using …..Can anybody shed any light on this?

Flip the QR open, and unscrew it until it pulls out, it works like a Maxle.

unlock the QR, unscrew the QR all the way out, remove QR, remove wheel

Please enable JavaScript

Humix

is it a white one?

As above – it’s a 9mm through axle, the nut on the non-lever side is captive to the pivot so you have to unscrew the lever end and then pull out, then the wheel comes off without the QR

10mm through axle I think, not 9mm.

The topic ‘Trek fuel EX9 rear wheel removal help…’ is closed to new replies.

Are there any frame updates or new features found on the alloy bike that weren’t on the earlier carbon Fuel EXe?

Yes! Alloy Fuel Exe models are compatible with the same angle-adjust headset that works with Fuel EX Gen 6. This allows riders to install optional angled headset cups to slacken or steepen the head tube by one degree. All other awesome features are the same between alloy and carbon models, including 140mm rear and 150mm front travel, progressive trail geometry, and rider-focused details like room for big shocks and long droppers. For hardware and service part specs, refer to the service manual.

Do any frame sizes feature curved top tubes for lower standover?

How much dropper post insertion does the frame have (alloy & carbon).

S – 190mm, M – 225mm, L – 250mm, XL – 280mm. The minimum amount of insertion is 80mm.

What is the maximum fork axle-to-crown and/or travel?

160mm or 575mm axle-to-crown.

Which version of Knock Block does it use?

Fuel EXe does not have Knock Block. The fork crown clears the downtube, and although Knock Block is still great for preventing cables from getting pulled in the event of a crash, we prioritized the integrated display instead.

What is the rear brake mount? What is the max rotor size?

180mm direct mount, max 203mm.

Are Shimano E-Rotors compatible?

Are any special tools needed for the frame or e-system.

A standard 20-spline BB tool and chainwhip are needed to remove the chainring. Retailers will need the TQ Service Dongle 5289577 and the TQ Dealer Service Tool software which can be downloaded at TQ’s dealer portal. For more instructions, refer to the Trek U module.

Wheel & tire

Do all frame sizes use the same wheel size?

Yes, all frame sizes come stock with 29” wheels.

Is it compatible with other wheel/tire sizes?

Yes, this bike is mullet compatible. Riders can run a 27.5” rear wheel for better bike-to-body clearance and more agile handling. This requires the Mino Link to be in the High position. Note, the smaller wheel circumference will affect the accuracy of the speed reading and cannot be adjusted. For example, switching to a 27.5 x 2.5 rear wheel and tire combination will reduce cut-off speed by about 1 km/h (0.6 mph).

What is the maximum tire size?

Are these bikes tubeless compatible what additional parts are required.

All Fuel EXe models come completely tubeless with rim strips, valves, and sealant.

Accessories

Are all sizes compatible with a water bottle?

Yes. Size Small is only compatible with a 20oz bottle.

Does it have any accessory mounts (kickstand, racks, fenders, lights)?

Fuel EXe does not have those mounts.

What is the maximum chainring size? Minimum chainring size?

Max: 34T round, Min: 30T, most 104 BCD rings should work. Oval rings of any size are not recommended as they will affect motor performance.

What is the chain line?

What is the crank interface.

Standard ISIS interface for e-bikes.

Does it have ISCG mounts?

No, but it does have mounts for the custom e*Thirteen chain guard that is included with some models. Refer to service manual for part number.

Why is there a wire coming out of my AXS derailleur?

The SRAM Extension Cord powers your AXS derailleur with the main e-system battery so you never have to worry about charging your AXS battery separately. Refer to service manual for replacement or aftermarket part number.

In which Mino Link position does the bike ship?

Which aftermarket shocks are compatible.

We know that the following shocks will fit. Other shocks may fit, as there is generous clearance, but should be checked for frame clearance at full suspension compression. - Fox Float X - Fox DHX - RockShox Super Deluxe - All coil shocks from Fox and RockShox

What size hardware is required for aftermarket shocks?

205mm x 60mm eye-to-eye, 54mm x 10mm trunnion mount upper, 40mm x 8mm pin mount lower.

Is there an app?

Yes! Download the Trek Central app for iOS in the Apple App Store or for Android in the Google Play store and follow the prompts. You can also view the App FAQ here: https://www.trekbikes.com/trek-central-faq/

What is the difference between the Trek app and the TQ app?

The Trek app does everything the TQ app does, including motor behavior customization, range estimations, and general e-system information. In addition, the Trek app includes tire and suspension pressure set up recommendations, service reminders, useful navigation and range features, activity tracking, and more!

Can I connect Fuel EXe to my Garmin or other device?

Yes! You can pair most Bluetooth or ANT+ cycling computers.

How does the TQ Harmonic Pin Ring motor function differently from other eMTB motors?

Most other e-bike motors use gears and belts to transmit power. These parts take up more space and can make noise or break. The HPR50 uses a harmonic drive transmission that’s small, simple, and dependable.

Does it have wiring for lights?

AXS-equipped bikes come with the TQ Smart Box installed. It has output ports for front light, rear light, aux 12, and electronic shifting. It is not included on non-AXS models but can be added as an upgrade. All models require an authorized retailer to install lights due to the need for splicing the correct light connectors, as well as activating the output ports on the Smart Box via the TQ Diagnostic Service Tool. Refer to TQ service manual for part numbers and further instructions.

Will Trek have all TQ spare parts in stock?

Trek will stock TQ parts that are used on Fuel EXe, as well as the optional Range Extender. We will not stock TQ parts that are not used on Fuel EXe.

What if I remove the internal battery entirely? For example, if I'm flying with the bike?

The derailleur will not shift. You can solve this two ways: by attaching an AXS battery (sold separately) to the derailleur and removing/securing the unused extension cord, OR by using the TQ Range Extender battery (sold separately) in place of the internal battery. Check with your airline before traveling to confirm that the 160Wh TQ Range Extender complies with your airline's carry-on regulations.

Are replacement/extra batteries available?

Yes, Trek distribution centers will stock TQ batteries. Due to hazmat shipping regulations, batteries cannot be returned.

How much does the battery weigh?

1,835 grams

Can the battery be charged when it is removed from the bike?

Yes. There is a charge level indicator on the battery with five bars and an optical switch. Cover the bar on the end, and the rest will light up according to the current charge level.

How long does the battery take to charge?

Approximately two hours.

Will the battery be damaged if it is plugged in too long?

No, it will just stop charging when it is full. However, never leave a charging battery unattended.

Will the battery be damaged if it discharges all the way?

No, but you should charge it. The battery can be damaged by storing it completely empty. If you aren’t going to ride the bike for three months or more, keep the battery charged above 30%.

Are there any other special instructions for the battery?

Please note that the battery will only last to about 15% capacity the first time it is depleted. So don’t be alarmed if the range on your first ride is a little shorter than expected. After the first full depletion and subsequent charging, the battery management system will “learn” what it needs to know and will deplete all the way to 0% on future rides. Also note that any time the battery reaches less than 10% charge, the motor output will be reduced to 110 watts. The battery level indicator will flash to indicate Low Battery mode.

Range Extender

How do customers get the Range Extender?

They can order it through their local Trek retailer in-store or online at Trekbikes.com. Range Extenders purchased online will be shipped to the customer’s Trek retailer of choice. Range Extender batteries are not eligible for return by the retailer due to hazmat shipping regulations. Each retailer will set their own policy regarding customer returns of Range Extender batteries.

Do I need any other parts for Range Extender?

You’ll also need the retention strap (5299107), power cable (5289575), and four button head cap fasteners (W575056).

How much does the Range Extender weigh?

How much extra range do you get.

Approximately 40% additional range.

Can I ride Fuel EXe with only the Range Extender and no battery?

Yes! This also allows you to fly with Fuel EXe by leaving the main battery behind and taking the Range Extender in your carry-on. Check with your airline before travelling to confirm compliance with regulations.

With the main battery removed do I need a cover for the frame if riding with the Range Extender only?

We recommend re-installing the battery cover even when the main battery is not installed. You will need to purchase the battery cover clip nut that slides onto the frame to take the place of the lower battery nut when the battery isn’t installed. The battery cover has a tab on the inside of it to stash your clip nut when the battery is installed.

How long does it take the Range Extender to charge?

Approximately one hour.

Are all sizes compatible with Range Extender?

Is the range extender compatible with any bottle cage.

We strongly recommend using the Bontrager Side Load cage and the Range Extender retention strap (sold separately) Other cages may work, but we have not tested them.

Riding Fuel EXe

What is the range?

Range varies significantly depending on many factors such as rider weight, assist level, tire choice, riding surface, terrain, and more. Varies from 2 – 5 hours.

How many assist modes are there?

There are three assist modes.

Is there a dynamic mode like Bosch’s eMTB mode?

All three modes are dynamic and tuned by Trek for mountain biking.

Can I customize the assist behavior?

Yes. Both the Trek and TQ apps allow you to adjust max power, assist factor, and pedal response. If you don’t like your changes, it’s easy to reset back to the factory settings.

Is there a walk assist?

Yes. See the Quick Start guide for instructions.

Can I ride without the remote?

Not if you want assist. You can turn the bike on by pressing the button on the display, but you must use the remote to select an assist mode.

Will the e-system work in extreme temperatures?

Follow the temperature range guidelines in the Quick Start guide.

Fuel EX8 Suspension Bearing Maintenance

trek fuel ex 8 rear wheel removal

  • Add to quote

After 9 months with my new EX8 I decided I would pull the back end apart and take a look at the suspension bearings. Pretty easy to disassemble by the way. To my surprise the bearings were completely depleted of grease and probably would have lasted another month at the most without lubrication. They were a piece of cake to lube up but I was just surprised that were completely dry. I usually do all my lubes on an annual basis depending how much I ride but would recommend to all you EX owners to take a look at the bearings and save yourself alot of extra work. Bob

Can you give us step-by-step instructions on how to do this? Perhaps make it an instructable ? Thanks

After the nine months of riding, how many miles was that? I'm just trying to get an idea of how many miles you have. I may only ride 15-20 miles a week on my EX8 so the bushings might be fine for a year if you are riding 50-75 miles a week. Thanks, Ed

After a little research I discovered that the bearings are not lubed when assembled but come direct from the vendor pre-assembled, lubed of course but not with high quality grease. So I would highly recommend checking out your bearings. If you have ALOT of extra money you can upgrade to these, then you don't need any lube! http://www.bocabearings.com/main1.aspx?p=docs&id=7

Thanks Nick. Did you notice a big differnce in the feel of the bike after lubricating the bearings?

trek fuel ex 8 rear wheel removal

I'd say that it may not have been that the grease got depleted, but more likely the bearings didn't come packed properly with grease to start. This is a comon problem with bearings and I always will check new bearings to make sure they are packed properly, especially in suspension points that will see loads of dust, grime and water.

I haven't had a chance to ride it since I lubed it but hopefully will sometime this week. I would imagine it will ride a little smoother. I tend to agree with LyNx about the bearings, I just can't see how they possibly be dry after that short of time period and being sealed up as well as they are.

It's an old thread, but I think it's a good one to bump back up. Bought my EX8 new in Oct 08, put 567 miles in 7 months. I checked the bearings last night and this is what I found. Evo bearings were almost dry, but were still working. Regreased (right over old grease) and not really an issue. The lower pivot bearings were completely dry and the non-drive side bearing was froze, I could not spin it with my finger, after using some creeping oil I finally broke it loose and worked it for a long time with my fingers. Cleaned out both lower pivot bearings with brake fluid and let dry. Repacked with finish line teflon grease and reassembled. Used loctite on threads and torqued to spec on bolt. Easy job with the only exception being that I didn't put shock in place prior to torquing (mistake), had to loosen everything and then reinstall shock. Make sure you have the shock installed and then torque up everything together. Anyone ever pull apart the APB to check those bearings?

gasiorv said: Anyone ever pull apart the APB to check those bearings? Click to expand...

I find that the lower shock pivot on my EX8 is very tight even with the bolt taken out. The full floater chain stays are actually pinching the bottom shock spacers very tightly. To uninstall/install the rear shock I have to loosen the main pivot bolts to "unpinch" the shock spacers. Is this how it is on your EX8s also?

I put it back together the same way, based on the design (being "pinched" between two bars without bearings or a spreader bar) I believe this is correct Gained access to the ABP bearings last night and they were actually in pretty good shape, I added some additional grease and put back together.

lexvil said: From the owner's manual: Lubricating the Fuel EX No lubrication is required for the shock or the pivot of your Trek rear suspension bicycle. Avoid all lubricants as they may damage the cartridge or composite bearings. For best results and long life, simply wash the shock and pivot area with a solution of soap and water, or just water. Radiators fail once more: Moscow suburbs residents appeal to Putin

R esidents across the Moscow suburbs are besieged by a heating problem, for which they plead direct intervention from President Vladimir Putin. These individuals have yet to experience any semblance of home heating since winter started due to a dwindling supply of heating oil. The issue, one largely avoided by local authority communication, has left residents desperate to the point of directly appealing to the president.

While plots have been uncovered to disrupt Ukraine's infrastructure for a second consecutive winter, thus depriving civilians of heating, it seems Russians are now mired in their crisis. Irony drips from the fact that those under Putin's leadership are looking to cause turmoil in Ukraine, yet at home, they face a similar predicament.

Many dwellings within the Moscow agglomeration are presently without heat. The capital's residents are desperate, directly appealing to President Putin due to a perceived lack of alternate avenues for assistance. The absence of suitable heating functionality since winter commenced pushes them towards desperation with no relief in sight.

This seems improbable, but in Russia, it appears that anything can happen.

It remains uncertain if Vladimir Putin is actively addressing the heating crisis. Some experts suggest that Russia's heating oil reserves are depleting, which negatively affects residents' quality of life. Plagued by cold radiators and plummeting winter temperatures, these citizens have directly addressed their pleas to their head of state.

This heating crisis is happening in Elektrostal, a town approximately 71 miles from Moscow.

Ironically, Russia has constantly aimed to destroy the Ukrainian infrastructure since war broke out, deliberately trying to leave Ukrainians without heating during the harsh winters, aiming to break their strong will. It's an irony they now struggle with a domestic heating crisis, particularly near Moscow, their largest and most pivotal city.

Desperate individuals are reaching out to Vladimir Putin. They question his knowledge of the heating infrastructure conditions in the Moscow suburbs and the dire situations residents face there. Sundown brings no relief from the harsh Russian winter and without heating, their houses turn cold. With elections nearing, more and more residents find themselves reaching out directly to their president.

"Since winter's start, we've been without heating. This has been a yearly occurrence for the past three years. Despite paying for heating, we don't have enough. We implore you, help us!" - these are the desperate pleas from the heavily dressed populace dealing with the Russian winter conditions.

Experts attribute the heating oil shortage to international sanctions and surging demands for diesel fuel, pivotal to military operations. Russia now grapples with a dearth of raw materials essential for boiler and heating plant operation. As supplies dwindle, houses grow cold with little hope of any immediate corrective intervention.

It would be adequate if the war ceased, residents were prioritized, and attention accorded to their welfare.
