man smiling - How to Build Self-Confidence and Self-Belief (Definition + Quotes)

“Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.”

This classic quote from automobile magnate Henry Ford is a perfect lead into this piece. The topic is self-confidence and self-belief, two ingredients to a healthy and happy life.

According to Ford, your belief in yourself is a determining factor in your success.

What is the meaning of self-confidence and self-belief, the psychology of self-confidence and self-belief, 3 examples of healthy self-belief, 12 tips for building self-confident skills, activities and exercises for developing self-confidence, hypnosis and hypnotherapy, guided meditations to boost self-confidence, motivational speeches and popular ted talks and videos, 19 quotes and affirmations on self-confidence, a take-home message.

Researchers have a tough time agreeing on what, exactly, self-confidence is. Some say it is simply believing in yourself, while others go into more detail about your expectations for and evaluations of yourself and your performance.

For non-academic purposes, however, we have a pretty solid definition; this definition comes from the Psychology Dictionary Online :

“Our self-assurance in trusting our abilities, capacities, and judgments; the belief that we can meet the demands of a task.”

This definition works pretty well for the average person and is easy to understand. To be self-confident is to trust in your own abilities and believe that you can do what you set your mind to.

As you can see from the definition, self-belief is a necessary—but not sufficient—component of self-confidence. You must have at least some self-belief to have self-confidence, but self-belief does not guarantee you self-confidence.

Along with characterizing your beliefs about yourself, self-confidence is a trait that permeates your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Think about a confident person you know; now, think about how you know this person is confident. You cannot get inside their head to know how they feel about themselves, so you base your judgment of their self-confidence on their words and actions.

To be truly self-confident is to exude confidence in your words and actions, in addition to believing in yourself and feeling capable.

woman arms up high - The Psychology of Self-Confidence and Self-Belief

Thanks to William James, we learned that self-confidence is an important predictor of success. His formula for self-esteem (a related, but slightly different, construct than self-confidence) proposes that it is built on the foundations of two elements (Nayler, 2010):

  • How we feel and what we believe about ourselves (our self-confidence/self-belief)
  • How well we actually perform (our successes)

This concept was not a new one, but James was one of the first to lay it out in detail. The idea stuck and influenced the work of another important theory in the area of self-confidence and self-esteem : Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory.

Bandura’s theory states that self-efficacy is built on one’s beliefs in the likelihood of future success; those who believe they can influence the events of their lives have high self-efficacy, while those who feel they are not in control and have little to no impact on what will happen to them in the future, have low self-efficacy (Bandura, 1977).

Self-efficacy is focused on current beliefs about the future; while self-confidence is also concerned with beliefs about the future, there is a definite link to the past—after all, our self-confidence is built on our past experiences.

Deci and Ryan drew from Bandura’s work to create their own theory on another “self-” construct: self-esteem. Self-Determination Theory posits that we are all born with an inherent drive to explore our environment and thrive, and that self-esteem results from humanity’s basic needs being met:

  • Relatedness
  • Autonomy (Ryan & Deci, 2000)

This theory expanded the boundaries of the self-confidence/self-esteem literature by adding in the needs component; when our needs are met, according to the theory, we have all the ingredients necessary to experience healthy self-esteem and to grow and flourish as a person.

Based on these three theories, and countless other reports, articles, and studies by other researchers in the field, we have been able to put together a more coherent picture of what self-confidence is. It is a sense of belief in oneself and feeling assured of your own abilities and chances of future success, and it is in large part based on your experiences.

We explore this further in The Science of Self-Acceptance Masterclass© .

Self-Confidence vs. Self-Esteem

So, although self-confidence and self-esteem have crossed paths at many points and share some common features, they are considered two distinct constructs.

Self-esteem is a fairly stable trait that doesn’t change much in individuals—unless they put in some dedicated effort to improve it. It can generally be defined as our beliefs in our own inherent value, worth, and how deserving we are of love, happiness , success, and other good things in life.

By contrast, self-confidence does not take into consideration any beliefs about worthiness or overall value; rather, it focuses on the ability to succeed and beliefs about one’s likelihood of succeeding.

Healthy self-belief is not narcissism, bragging, or boasting. Rather, it is a realistic but optimistic evaluation of yourself and your abilities and a sense of trust and confidence in yourself.

Examples of healthy self-belief and self-confidence include:

  • A woman goes on a date and has a great time; she feels like she and her date clicked and is looking forward to hearing from him. When he doesn’t call within a few days, she refrains from falling into a negative thought spiral and instead thinks, “Maybe he just isn’t the type of guy who calls right away. Or, maybe we just aren’t right for each other. I had fun and that’s what matters!”
  • A man is looking for a job and sees a posting that has several requirements; he meets most of them, but he doesn’t quite reach the cutoff on a couple of them. Instead of passing it up and assuming he would never get an interview, he applies anyway and explains how he has other traits and qualifications that make up for any lack in the requirements in his cover letter.
  • A student is interested in taking an Advanced Placement class at her high school and talks to her friends about it. Those who have already taken the class tells her it’s really hard and that she probably wouldn’t pass. She could trust in their judgment and pass up the opportunity, but instead, she holds firm in her belief about her own abilities and signs up anyway.

So, how do you become one of those people described above?

It isn’t necessarily an easy road, but you will probably find it more than worth the effort. Below are some tips on building your self-confidence and boosting your belief in yourself.

The team from the Mind Tools (2016) website listed several tips and suggestions for improving your self-confidence based on where you are on your journey:

  • Preparing for your journey a. Take inventory of what you have already achieved. b. Think about your strengths and weaknesses (but especially your strengths). c. Think about your goals and values . d. Practice ceasing negative self-talk in its tracks and replacing it with positive thinking. e. Commit to the journey to self-confidence!
  • Setting out a. Identify and enhance the knowledge and skills you need to succeed. b. Focus on the basics—don’t get bogged down in details or reaching for perfection. c. Set small goals and achieve them to “pile up successes.” d. Keep working on your positive thinking and self-talk.
  • Accelerating towards success a. Celebrate your successes. b. Keep yourself grounded. c. Assess your current level of self-confidence and identify what strategies you can use to keep building it up.

If you hit a roadblock on your journey to self-confidence, don’t worry! They happen to everyone. Try to get back on track as soon as you can. You may find the following activities helpful.

Here are activities and exercises you can do to work on your self-confidence and self-esteem.

Of course, the most important thing you can do to build your self-confidence is to get some success experiences under your belt—no matter how small—but here are some other things you can try as well.

Recognizing negative thoughts

Negative thoughts are so often a drain on our self-confidence, and we may not even realize it. Negative thoughts can be sneaky, so we need to be extra-vigilant in identifying and addressing them.

Practice “listening” to your own thoughts; notice the automatic thoughts that pop into your head and pay attention to the way you talk to yourself. When you notice a negative thought, grab onto it and either write it down or just sit and think about it for a moment.

Don’t spend long thinking about the thought in its current form, though. Instead, spend your time thinking about how it can be rephrased and adapted to become a positive (or at least neutral) thought.

For example, if you catch yourself thinking, “You’re such a failure! You can’t do anything right!” try to replace it with a more forgiving phrase like, “Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. I bet I can do better next time!”

This replacement thought not only offers you forgiveness and compassion , it also helps you boost your belief in your ability to succeed in the future. Give it a try and see if it works for you!

Challenging yourself

The best way to boost your self-confidence is to open yourself up to positive new experiences and allow yourself to succeed.

If you have low self-confidence, you probably don’t like taking risks—whether those risks involve physical activity, going for a new job or promotion, talking to someone you like, or just trying a new activity. It is a classic catch-22: your low self-confidence encourages you to avoid doing the exact things that would help you build up your self-confidence.

If uninterrupted, this can lead to an ever-deepening spiral of low self-confidence; you don’t have any exciting new successes, so your self-confidence is even lower, so you feel even less like trying new things.

To break this cycle, you know what you need to do: put yourself out there, try something new, and challenge yourself!

Find one thing you are interested in and go for it. It might be a cooking class, a running group, marathon training, or volunteering for a cause you are passionate about. Whatever it is, push yourself to take a risk and watch your confidence grow.

Giving yourself the self-care you need

Self-care is incredibly important for a lot of things, but it can be especially impactful for our self-confidence.

Engage in self-care to show yourself how valuable you are, and you will feel more confident in your abilities and motivated to prove that you are right about yourself.

Remember that self-care is about much more than just getting a massage or allowing yourself to indulge in some extra-tasty food or on a Netflix binge. Make sure to take care of your body, mind, and soul by eating healthy, exercising, giving yourself a break, and engaging in whatever other self-care you need to feel good.

Practice accepting failure

This isn’t an especially fun exercise to practice, but it is a necessary one. We all fail at some point, and it does us absolutely no good to pretend that we don’t—or won’t—ever fail.

To practice accepting failure, engage in some activities that you know you will fail at. I know, it sounds terrible! Why would you do something when you know you will fail? Because practicing failure can be just as important as practicing success.

Take risks and set stretch goals for yourself. Sometimes you will achieve them, and sometimes you won’t. Whether you achieve them or not, make sure to tell yourself the same thing after: “You put a lot of effort into this and I’m proud of you for working hard.”

You don’t need to succeed to be proud of yourself and confident in your abilities (Coleman, 2017).

You have certainly heard of hypnosis before, but you may not be as familiar with hypnotherapy —and you may not know what that has to do with self-confidence.

Hypnosis is an alternative treatment that is generally not practiced as a first-line approach, but it is not uncommon for a therapist to use hypnosis in cases that call for it. A lack of self-confidence can be one such case.

While CBT and other behavioral therapies can do a great job of tackling your conscious thoughts and helping you manage your feelings and behavior, we know that there is also a lot going on in your subconscious. Hypnotherapists believe that hypnosis can help treat low self-confidence by breaking into the negative things happening in your subconscious and injecting a dose of positivity.

  • “I am smart, competent, and capable.”
  • “I am growing and changing for the better.”
  • “I believe in myself and my abilities.”
  • “I can do anything I set my mind to.”
  • “I act with confidence and with a plan, but I accept that plans can change.”
  • “It is enough to have done my best.”
  • “I have the power to change myself.”

18 tips for being confident from within

Does it sometimes seem like everyone around you is confident and sure of themselves? Chances are, they have doubts just like you. So what’s the secret they’ve discovered about how to be confident ? They know that confidence is not something you have , it’s something you create . Being confident is nothing more than a feeling of certainty that you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to. Confidence comes from within, and you can find ways to believe in yourself at any time.

That’s not to say learning how to build confidence will solve all your problems. Everyone has bad days or moments that upset them. Being confident also doesn’t mean you’re completely sure of yourself at all times. Creating confidence is not about knowing it all; it’s about trusting that no matter what happens in a particular situation, you’ll be able to handle it and learn from the outcome.

Take this quick quiz to discover your top human need

Why is confidence important?

Learning how to be confident is important in every part of your life, but there are some instances where it’s crucial – especially at times where you feel like giving up . If you are a leader and in a position that requires being convincing and trustworthy, being confident is non-negotiable. No one will follow a leader who appears unsure of themselves. Lack of confidence can seriously impact your ability to put together a winning team and guide them to achieving your shared goals.

Even if you’re not in a leadership role, confidence is vital to being a team player in many situations – whether you’re in a sales position or need to present a confident face during frequent client interactions. Being confident helps you make instant connections and build relationships that will ensure you and your company succeed.

Knowing how to be confident in yourself is important beyond the workplace, too. Learning how to be more confident can help you attract a partner you can build a healthy relationship with. It can also help you effectively handle conflict and seek out new opportunities that will foster your personal growth.

The principles of how to be confident

If you want to learn how to build confidence , you must be willing to change your state . Your state is essentially your mood at any given time of day. Your mood is influenced by how you feel about yourself at that point in time. The good news is you can change your state at any time – no matter what’s going on around you – as long as you know how to do it. Here are the main principles of building confidence and certainty that anyone can use to their advantage – and some real-life examples to help you apply them in any area of your life.

Body language

Physiology is key when learning how to be confident . M astering the body language of confidence can put you on the path to success. Think about someone you know whom you consider extremely confident. When you first met them, you probably knew they were confident before they even started speaking. You knew they were self-assured because of the way they carried themselves and moved. They made eye contact, shook your hand firmly and stood up straight. Now do a quick inventory of your body. What’s your posture like? How are you breathing? We all get in negative states, which can lead to slouching, shallow breathing or hanging your head. You have the power to change how you’re feeling by controlling the way your body moves and the way you present yourself.

Thinking positive can manifest itself in several ways. First, change your focus – because “Where focus goes, energy flows,” as Tony says. Instead of getting hung up on all the ways something could go wrong, focus on all the ways it could go right . Think about how you’re going to nail your presentation and how pleased your coworkers will be to hear it. What you focus on becomes your reality – and that includes what you focus on within your own mind. Replace negative words with positive ones and start seeing the bright side of situations. By changing your focus, internally and externally, you’re changing your state. And by changing your state, you’ll change your life.

Emotional control

Humans have the unique and incredible capacity to experience a wide range of emotions. But if you let your emotions dictate your experience of life without pinpointing why you feel a particular way, your emotions control you. The truth is that you control the way you feel , including whether or not you feel confident. Confidence is not something people are born with – it’s something you must create. Building confidence creates the feeling of certainty that you can accomplish what you set out to do. Confidence is like any other emotion. It is something you feel, and you can train yourself to access it in an instant.

A growth mindset

What do you think being confident entails? You may have some idea that confidence only stems from prior success – that you can only know how to be confident in yourself after you’ve become wildly successful. This sort of core belief severely limits you. Confidence doesn’t come from your outward achievements – it comes from within. Being confident means that if you do fail, you can pick yourself back up and try again instead of throwing in the towel. Once you start taking actionable steps toward your goal of being confident, your beliefs will gradually start to solidify. It’s time to adopt a growth mindset and start believing that you can learn how to build confidence . As Tony Robbins says, “Whatever you hold in your mind on a consistent basis is exactly what you will experience in your life.”

where focus goes energy flows

How to be confident

What do those principles have in common? They are all about becoming the master of your emotions. You must change your perspective and your mindset, and choose to be confident. And part of achieving this is believing – building certainty – that you are confident. That can sometimes be easier said than done , but there are specific actions you can take to apply these principles and become confident.

1. Practice self-love

To truly learn how to be confident , you need to love yourself first. When you fall in love with yourself , you’ll have confidence no matter what happens in life, because that confidence will come from within.

To master the art of self-confidence, first master the arts of self-awareness and self-love. Determine your values , and be proud of them. Embrace your strengths and weaknesses equally. That doesn’t mean you can’t work on those weaknesses. It’s about appreciating who you are and what makes you different from everyone else on the planet. When you start questioning your self-belief, remember to love yourself first.

2. Conquer your limiting beliefs

Without self-love, people unconsciously adopt limiting beliefs about what they are capable of or what type of relationship they deserve. This leads to self-sabotage and reinforcement of these beliefs – and overcoming them is the first step to total confidence. Ask yourself: What are the beliefs that are causing your lack of confidence in the first place? Negative emotions like self-doubt or anxiety are deeply connected to the opinions we have of ourselves based on our life experiences. They’re your brain telling you that it’s time to examine these limiting beliefs and replace them with empowering ones .

3. Connect confidence to your goals

Why is learning how to gain confidence important to you? Do you present at conventions where you interact with a huge number of people? Do you run a company or a team and need to present a strong sense of leadership? Maybe you’ve started dating and want to make a good impression when you meet a potential new love interest. The first step is knowing the purpose behind why you want to achieve it. Once you know your purpose , learning how to build confidence becomes a matter of retraining your brain.

4. Change your physiology

The fastest tip for building confidence to radically change your physiology. Stand up straight. Square your shoulders and open up your chest. Breathe deeply. Maintain brisk, purposeful strides when you walk to cover more ground. Maintaining a posture like this makes you feel stronger and where your body goes, your mind follows. You can also observe others’ physiology to learn more about them and gain an edge in negotiations . Certain signs, such as body angle and amount of physical space they take up, can clue you in on how a person perceives a situation – and how they can be persuaded .

5. Take credit for your achievements

Just as adjusting your body language can make you feel confident even when you’re not, speaking up for yourself even when you don’t feel you deserve it can also have that effect. Confident people may make more money in the workplace due to one straightforward reason: they take credit for their achievements – and they do it when it matters most. If you made a contribution that accomplished a goal for the company or led to a positive outcome, it isn’t bragging to point it out to your manager or CEO – it’s a fact. As long as you state it in a matter-of-fact way, it won’t just make you look good – it will make you feel good, too.

6. Assess your top human need

Another vital step toward knowing how to be confident in yourself is to determine what drives your decisions. We all have Six Human Needs : certainty, significance, variety, love/connection, growth and contribution. We value one of these needs more than the others, and it affects every decision we make in life. It can even affect our confidence. If your top need is certainty, you may feel unsure in unfamiliar situations. If your top need is significance , you’ll start feeling insecure if you don’t get the recognition you need. Take Tony’s Driving Force Quiz to determine your top need and start thinking about how it could be affecting your confidence levels.

7. Improve your self-talk

Our words create our emotions, and our emotions create our world. If we’re not feeling confident, it’s a result of the stories we tell ourselves – and the words we use to tell them. The self-talk you use has an important effect on your confidence. What kind of questions are you asking yourself? If the things that come to mind are, “How come I’m not successful?” “Am I not smart enough to reach my goal?” “Do other people see me as a failure?” then you are setting yourself up for failure. Catch yourself when you are thinking negatively and shift the pattern of your thoughts. Ask yourself things like, “Why wouldn’t I accomplish everything I set my mind to?” and “Why would I waste time on my anxieties instead of focusing on my strengths?” When you ask better questions , you get better answers .

8. Shift your perspective

If you’re feeling discouraged, sometimes all you need to do is reframe your mindset. First you must change your perspective on failure. Tony has said, “I’ve come to believe that all my past failure and frustration were actually laying the foundation for the understandings that have created the new level of living I now enjoy.” This is his top tip for how to be confident : See failures as opportunities, not obstacles. Focus on the positive, instead of the negative. Embrace all of the gifts of life – and live fearlessly.

9. Practice gratitude

Practicing gratitude is key to living a happy life. Tony says, “When you are grateful, fear disappears and abundance appears.” Stop thinking of your body as existing only to look at – or worse, for others to look at. Your body is more than a vessel or a painting to be admired. Think about all the things your body does for you. Think about all the things you have to be grateful for, instead of what you don’t have. When you change your mindset from one of negativity to one of abundance , you’ll stop approaching life with a scarcity mindset that breeds negativity and anxiety and start believing that no matter what, the universe will provide for you.

10. Use power poses

One of the deepest ways to increase confidence is to connect to your inner power. All of us have strength within us, but when we’re feeling low it can be difficult to remember it’s there. Consider developing your own personal power pose and breathing deeply to reconnect to your strong core. Your pose can be a yoga pose – warrior is an especially empowering one – standing with your hands on your hips and your feet shoulder width apart or standing with your head held high and your back straight. The important thing is that your pose achieves the goals of awakening your inner strength and carrying that strength and confidence into every interaction.

11. Think of past successes

There’s one incredible trick that will help you figure out how to be confident even when you’re at your absolute lowest: thinking about something you’re proud of. If you’re nervous or feeling unsure about an upcoming situation, picture a recent accomplishment or a time where you successfully handled a similar situation. Maybe you’ve never given a company-wide presentation, but you have confidently presented to clients on calls. Reliving these moments can help you unlock your potential . Your mind will begin to think in positive terms, not negative ones. Channeling moments of pride can help you to see the big picture more clearly – ultimately building your confidence.

12. Use goal visualization

Positive visualization is a powerful tool to wield on the road to understanding how to build confidence . When you visualize something over and over again, your mind begins to believe that it has already happened. When the situation finally arises – you’re making that presentation, asking for a raise or confronting a coworker – your brain thinks, “I got this.” That’s confidence. Visualize a specific situation at work. Think of yourself succeeding and do your best to minimize any thoughts of failure. Remember that you get what you focus on.

13. Make eye contact

For those who aren’t sure how to be confident , making eye contact can be uncomfortable at first. But like changing your physiology, you need to just do it – confidence will follow after you take the action. Connecting with people and showing confidence through eye contact is one of the quickest ways to exude confidence when you meet new people and can strengthen relationships long-term. Use the 80/20 rule of meeting someone’s eyes 80% of the time and focusing on something else the other 20% so you don’t appear too intense or make the other person uncomfortable.

14. Create healthy routines

To get in touch with your personal power, you need to adopt new routines. Consider building a meditation practice into your routine. Mindfulness meditation is shown to reduce anxiety and help you focus on your core competencies. You can even use incantations – a powerful way to use your body and your voice to set intentions. Or, start your day with priming , an exercise Tony himself uses every morning that’s a combination of all three of these routines. By incorporating how to believe in yourself into your morning routine, you can set the tone for a day filled with confidence.

15. Unlock the power of proximity

Learning how to believe in yourself is like running a race set on an uphill course. You’ll need fuel for the journey. To fuel self-belief, surround yourself with people who inspire and support you. This is the law of attraction – the idea that, as Tony says, “Proximity is power.” Whatever you want to achieve in your life, find people who will elevate you, not bring you down. You can do this by finding a mentor or joining a mastermind group . This is different than your group of friends or your family. When you tap into the power of proximity , you’ll gain trusted advisors who can not only support you, but challenge you to be better.

16. Feed your mind

The law of attraction isn’t just about who you associate with. It’s also about how you feed your mind : what you read and watch on a daily basis. Make a point to seek out advice from others who have achieved your goals, even if they are not your mentor or coach. Watch documentaries about people who have done great things in life. Read inspirational quotes and write down your favorites. Learn about new topics that will help you reach your goals, like finance, or that will help you face your fears – like how to be confident or deliver a presentation. You’ll condition your brain to believe in yourself , because it will know that you have the skills you need to succeed.

17. Learn a new skill

It’s human nature to experience fear and anxiety . But when you believe in yourself, you realize that those emotions are there to encourage you to take action, not to hold you back. Face your fears by learning a new skill. Whether you learn how to write code or how to play the piano, you’ll increase your feelings of self-efficacy – your belief in your abilities to execute tasks, control your own behavior and attain your goals. Research has even shown that learning is directly related to happiness – it releases dopamine in the brain, known as the “reward molecule.” You’ll make new neural connections, strengthen your decision-making skills and more. You’ll begin to have faith in yourself, one new skill at a time.

18. Live in the present

Confidence in relationships can be one of the most challenging areas. If you’ve been wronged in a previous relationship – or your current one – it can be hard to let go of the past and forgive. We want to avoid pain and fulfill our need for certainty, but this prevents us from living in the present . Learn to appreciate what you have right now, without worrying about what’s going to happen tomorrow – or what happened yesterday. Free your mind, be here now and confidence will follow.

The benefits of believing in yourself

3 common roadblocks, how to overcome roadblocks ,  7 strategies that will help you believe in yourself, the bottom line.

We can be our biggest cheerleaders — or our biggest critics. And the difference between the two options matters. Believing in yourself is crucial to succeeding.

Self-efficacy , or your ability to believe in yourself , can improve your success in goal setting. Studies have looked at how higher self-efficacy indicates success in areas like academic performance or quitting smoking . If you can believe, you really can achieve.

It helps to adopt a growth mindset and cultivate the ability to accept and learn from your mistakes . Developing these characteristics can take patience and time.

Let’s take a lo ok at how to believe in yourself, and why it’s important to have faith in your abilities.

Self-belief is the formula to personal and professional success.

Do you berate yourself when you make a mistake? Do you, for some reason or other, think negative self-talk will make you a better person?

Making mistakes is one thing. But at some point, you have to forgive yourself and move on. Otherwise, that energy will only hold you back. It’ll prevent you from taking risks and stepping up to achieve your goals.

At the end of the day, you have to believe in yourself. Doing so will bring you one step closer to manifesting a better life .

Here’s why you should believe in yourself and your instincts:

1. If you don’t, who else will?

Maybe you have a system of people who love and support you, and that’s great. But at the end of the day, only you can act on the opportunities in your life. At some point in your life, you’ll have to take a leap of faith. And you’ll have to trust in your ability to survive it.

2. You’ll fail more gracefully

Look, it happens to all of us. Even the most successful people know what failure feels like . But they know that, as long as they learn something, they’ll continue to grow. You can be like that, too — you just have to trust yourself.

3. Being follows doing (sometimes you have to act positive to get positive)

If you don’t believe you’re worthy, neither will other people. You have to suspend your disbelief and take the leap to act like you believe in yourself, first. You'll see yourself through new eyes and so will other people.

Negativity begets negativity. That’s why you should flip the script. When you show more positivity, you’ll attract more positive people in your life .

4. You’ll inspire yourself to keep going

You’ll encounter all sorts of obstacles in life. You’ll feel tired, wary, and want to quit. But if you believe in yourself, you’ll look back on all your previous successes and remember that better is possible.

5. You’ll start reaching your goals

How can you reach your goals if you don’t even think you can? Your successes shouldn’t be a surprise, they should be a validation of your belief in yourself. Believing in yourself helps you focus and increases productivity. Positive thinking is infectious, and it’ll spread to others, inspiring them to believe in themselves.

The magic happens when you have a belief in self. Of course, it isn't magic — it's your potential. And shifting into a more positive growth mindset isn't a process you have to handle alone: BetterUp coaches are here for precisely this reason. You matter, and we want to help you realize more of your potential.

Positive self-talk is easier said than done. You must control your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Rewiring your brain to think positive thoughts in the place of criticism is tricky.

Three common roadblocks people face regarding self-belief are:

1. Comparison

Perception is everything. Seeing someone else thriving doesn’t mean you aren’t.

Remember, what you see on social media is what people let you see, and they don’t tend to advertise their struggles. It’s like that old saying: Don’t compare your insides to someone else’s outside.

Plus, there’s room for both you and your peers to thrive. Feel proud of friends and colleagues that are doing well, without succumbing to envy.

2. The past

There's some truth to the phrase, “The past can haunt you." It’s hard to shake off a rough childhood or an unhealthy relationship. Self-reflection is good, but not at the expense of your mental health. Talking to a mental health professional is a great way to work through your past struggles and stop them from affecting your present.

3. Current relationships

Do you have that one friend that’s always putting you down? Maybe it’s a parent or a colleague that you dread seeing because they make you feel small. Human beings are social creatures by nature, but a lack of approval can be detrimental to your self-confidence .

Woman-Drawing-Draft-On-Floor-how-to-believe-yourself

Remember, roadblocks aren’t permanent obstacles — there’s always a way past them. Try these strategies:

  • Think positively: Your thoughts make up a large part of who you are and what you do. Believing in yourself and your abilities to tackle any hurdle is an essential step to beating whatever you’re up against.
  • Visualize where you want to be : This will keep you motivated, even when things look bleak and self-doubt sets in. While you can’t change the past, you can make a better future. Whatever you want to do is possible.
  • Take action: Thinking and “talking the talk” are important but eventually, you must “walk the walk.” You’ll feel better about yourself and your skills as you make progress and see the rewards that arise from the work you’re putting in to make a change.

Don’t let the obstacles discourage you. Below are seven ways to make a change and feel better about yourself :

1. Create healthy routines

Living well is critical to loving yourself. Feeding your body with healthy food and drink, exercising, sleeping, and taking breaks amidst your work schedule are all important. Your anxiety will decrease, and you can tackle each day with more strength. Self-love is all about maintaining a balance and doing all you can to set yourself up for success.

2. Surround yourself with good people

Public speaker an d self-help guru Tony Robbins says, “Proximit y is power.” There's truth in that. The people you spend time with have an impact on your mindset and your motivation. Seek out people who inspire you to be your best self and the ones who help you get there.

Encouraging individuals will keep you going when things get hard, and they’ll challenge you, too.

Be on the lookout for people with these toxic personality traits . If you find yourself drained, negative, and full of self-doubt around certain people, spend less time with them. Cut them out of your life. If that’s not possible, do your best to limit time spent together.

3. Feed your mind

There's some truth to the law of attraction , too — the type of energy you give off comes back to you, positive and negative. While it might not really be a natural law, it's true that your mindset affects how you interact with the world and how other people interact with you.

What you fill your mind with influences how you see yourself and the world around you.

Seek out inspiring and uplifting media, from books to movies to social media accounts. Frequent exposure to uplifting and supportive material will slowly condition your brain to think differently. Limit your time with overly pessimistic or cynical perspectives. While it's important to be realistic and embrace the ups and downs of life , cynicism erodes your belief in others, destroys your motivation, and takes away your hope for the future. It doesn't help how you feel about yourself, either.

4. Don't let your fear stop you

Self-doubt is normal. You can’t let that hold you back. Speak up. Set goals .   Learning something new or overcoming a hurdle releases dopamine in your brain , and you’ll physically feel better with each step you take. Instead of feeling frustrated or small when errors occur, remember that you can learn from mistakes . That is, setbacks are also a potential source of growth.

5. Draw on your inner strength

Sometimes pushing through is all you can do. Just because you fail at a task doesn’t mean you 're a failure . D ig deep for grit, and keep going even in challenging moments.

6. Acknowledge your victories

Celebrate the little things and the big accomplishments. Celebrate your passions. Instead of being self-critical, opt to practice self-compassion .

7. Work on your strengths

When you’re feeling down in the dumps, it’s common to focus on your weaknesses. Instead, work to identify your strengths. It can help to ask others for feedback. Then,  focus on honing those skills — it’ll help you feel more capable.

Self-care is often put on the back burner in favor of other responsibilities, but believing in yourself is just one aspect of our well-being.

Everyone is unique, full of possibility, capable of self-improvement , and worthy of self-belief. Using technology, world-class coaching, and evidence-based behavioral science, we strive to help every individual unlock their greater potential and purpose.

The Secret Sauce to Unshakeable Confidence? How to Believe in Yourself and Spark That Inner Fire

  • October 11, 2023

Woman standing on top of a mountain with her arms in the air

It’s not always easy to believe in yourself, especially when the odds are against you. But doing so, even when others don’t, is one of the most powerful forms of self-love.

Equally important, it’s a skill. And like any skill, you can cultivate and develop it. And when you do, you may just realize that you’re stepping into greatness.

As Marisa Peer , the creator of Rapid Transformational Therapy® and trainer of Mindvalley’s Uncompromised Life Quest, says, “Belief without talent can take you further than talent without belief.”

Why Is It Important to Believe In Yourself?

The “believe in yourself” meaning is about having faith in your own capabilities and the potential for bigger, better things. And it’s only upon this realization of that potential that you can start actualizing it.

What’s more, when you believe in yourself , you:

  • Unleash your inner power. It’s what helps you tackle tough situations and push past your limits, making you strong enough to achieve even your biggest goals.
  • Radiate positivity. Your confidence becomes contagious and inspires other people, the same way you get inspired by confident people.
  • Embrace resilience. Setbacks become stepping stones. When things don’t go as planned—which they often don’t—instead of cursing your tough luck, you overcome the challenge and come back stronger.
  • Fuel your dreams. Dreams are your life’s goals, and self-belief is the energy that keeps them alive, helping to turn them into reality.
  • Create authentic connections. You attract like-minded souls who accept you for who you are.
  • Embrace growth. Your self-confidence allows you to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.

Common Roadblocks to Self-Belief

The road to greatness is never without trials. Look at Frodo Baggins, Luke Skywalker, or Ellen Ripley—who would they be if it weren’t for the challenges they faced and managed to surpass? These roadblocks are what make them who they are.

Your road to self-belief is also a great adventure. And on it, you’ll find roadblocks to overcome. Here are some common ones:

  • Persistent self-doubt. The ever-presence of self-doubt will try to limit your potential more times than you’d like.
  • Fear of failure. This keeps you from embracing challenges and taking risks.
  • Comparing yourself to others. It’s only human to do so, but the path to self-belief lies in focusing on comparing your present self with your past self instead.
  • Past trauma and conditioning. These often cause limiting beliefs , making your journey to greatness a harder one to pursue.
  • Lack of self-compassion. Self-criticism can chip away at self-belief.
  • External validation. Seeking approval from others can stifle self-belief.

It’s important to remember that these roadblocks are also a nudge towards your growth.

It’s as Paul McKenna , UK’s #1 hypnotherapist and trainer of Mindvalley’s Total Self-Confidence Quest, says: “ Any negative traits you identify are not really yours—they belong to your negative self-image and were programmed into you when you were a child. By identifying them honestly, you are about to let them go! ”

How to Believe In Yourself: 5 Tips From Mindvalley Experts

It goes without saying that believing in yourself boosts your self-esteem . So where can you start?

Taking tips from Paul and Marisa’s Mindvalley quests, here’s how to believe in yourself:

1. Transform your inner dialogue

Your internal dialogue—the way you talk to yourself—has a profound impact on your self-belief and confidence. A constructive inner dialogue is like having a supportive coach in your mind, encouraging you to be your best self.

Indeed, studies have shown that self-compassion and self-talk produce higher levels of self-esteem and resilience.

Tip from Paul McKenna: The best way to start transforming your inner dialogue is to start improving it. Here’s what you can do:

  • First, recall a time when you made a mistake and criticized yourself harshly. Remember exactly what you said and how you felt.
  • Then, ask yourself, “ How could I convey the same message in an encouraging way? ” Take on the role of a supportive coach and offer constructive criticism instead of harsh judgment.
  • Finally, visualize yourself giving positive feedback.

Practice this exercise whenever you catch yourself being overly critical. And by changing the tone and content of your self-talk, you’re rewiring your mind for confidence.

2. Use positive affirmations

Affirmations are a powerful, scientifically proven tool for rewiring your subconscious mind. When you consistently affirm positive beliefs about yourself, you begin to believe and embody them.

This shift in self-perception can have a profound impact on your confidence and overall well-being.

Tip from Marisa Peer: To get started with positive affirmations is to make a small list with them. These should be short, clear, and in the present tense. For example:

  • “ I am confident and capable .”
  • “ I am worthy of love and happiness .”
  • “ I attract positive and loving relationships .”

For a few minutes each day, repeat these affirmations aloud or in your mind, preferably in the morning or before bedtime. Say them with conviction and emotion, as if they are already true.

3. Keep your posture

Your body and mind are linked in more ways than many people believe. How you use your body, from posture to breathing, impacts your emotions and behaviors in real time.

So sitting up straight in your chair isn’t just good for your posture—it also gives you more confidence, as body posture affects confidence in your own thoughts .

Tip from Paul McKenna: Here’s how you can directly affect your mind with your posture:

  • Stand up, plant your feet firmly on the ground, roll your shoulders back, and put on a big, confident smile.
  • Keep that posture, take a deep breath, and think of a situation that usually makes you nervous.
  • Notice how your feelings about that situation change or how it’s more challenging to think negatively about it.

The way you use your body can shape your thoughts and emotions. So use it wisely, and most importantly, consciously.

4. Reframe your beliefs

If you had a negative experience, it’s possible that it created a negative belief.

For example, after being rejected from a romantic relationship, you may believe you aren’t worthy enough. This can be greatly damaging to your self-confidence.

In her Mindvalley Quest, Marisa suggests that there is a way out of these kinds of unproductive beliefs. And the way to achieve that is through cognitive reframing —a powerful way of changing your thought patterns and beliefs.

Tip from Marisa Peer: If you want to take a quick look at how this works, try this exercise from Marisa’s Uncompromised Life Quest:

  • First, recall a past experience where you felt rejected or lacked self-belief.
  • Then, mentally reframe it.
  • Now, instead of dwelling on the rejection, focus on what you’ve learned from it or how it has made you stronger. And see what happens.

Beliefs are sometimes so deeply rooted in people that they often forget how much they shape them. If you believe you are not worthy, people will treat you as such. In return, you will feel even less worthy, and the vicious circle goes on and on.

5. Develop a confidence routine

Just as physical exercise can transform your body, mental exercise can transform your mindset. And mental exercises for your self-confidence are going to help you exactly with that.

According to Paul, what you practice is what you eventually become. Cultivate the habit of confidence, and watch as it transforms your life one day at a time.

Tip from Paul McKenna: A simple and brief daily confidence routine can help. Paul’s blueprint includes five points, and for a start, don’t spend more than a minute on any of these points:

  • Reflection of your past or future successes. Visualize them vividly with bright colors and moving images.
  • Mirror work. Stand in front of a mirror, close your eyes, and imagine seeing yourself through the eyes of someone who loves and respects you. Open your eyes and truly see yourself through their eyes.
  • Compliment yourself using your confident internal voice repeatedly for a full minute. Boost your self-esteem and self-belief.
  • Push the confidence switch. Recall a moment when you felt supremely confident. Relive it in your mind, intensifying the colors, sounds, and feelings. Squeeze your thumb and middle finger together while reliving this moment to anchor the confident feeling.
  • Confidence in action. Jot down any inspired actions that arise during your routine. Choose at least one action that feels slightly risky and commit to taking it in the next 24 hours.

5 Inspirational “Believe in Yourself” Quotes

At first glance, quotes can seem like nothing more than words. But it’s in those words that lies the power of inspiration, motivation, and positivity.

Confidence quotes , in particular, can be your guide on your journey to self-belief. Here are a few hand-picked selections:

  • “ When you believe in you, everyone else believes in you. ” — Marisa Peer, creator of Rapid Transformational Therapy® and trainer of Mindvalley’s Uncompromised Life Quest
  • “ Feeling a level of confidence in yourself can withstand the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune and carry you forward to the life of your dreams. ” — Paul McKenna, UK’s #1 hypnotherapist and trainer of Mindvalley’s Total Self-Confidence Quest
  • “ Believe you can, and you’re halfway there. ” — Theodore Roosevelt, 26th president of the United States
  • “ Believe in yourself, and there will come a day when others will have no choice but to believe with you. ” — Cynthia Kersey, best-selling author and speaker
  • “ Believe in yourself, take on your challenges, dig deep within yourself to conquer fears. Never let anyone bring you down. You got this. ” — Chantal Sutherland, jockey and Canadian model

Awaken Your Unstoppable

“ You need to put your effort into falling in love with you, and then the world will change so dramatically ,” says Marisa. And she has a great point.

As mentioned, every path to greatness comes with trials. But here’s the kicker: the more you overcome these obstacles, the more you grow—and the more you grow, the bigger obstacles you can overcome.

Of course, it helps to have a little help. And you can find it at Mindvalley:

  • Total Self-Confidence Quest with Paul McKenna, where you can experience the power of hypnosis to help you go from self-criticizing to self-confident.
  • Uncompromised Life Quest with Marisa Peer, where you can learn to rise above self-doubt, limiting beliefs, and unrealized success.

You can gain access to their classes—for free—when you sign up for a Mindvalley account . Additionally, you’ll also get daily meditations that can help bolster your self-esteem.

You’re born for greatness. And with unshakable faith in yourself, the world will see it, too.

Welcome in.

How To Believe In Yourself

After personally experiencing the good that focusing on positive thinking can bring, I can confidently say your ability to believe in yourself can change your life.

The process of thinking and talking about what you want and how to get it actually makes you feel happier and in greater control of your life.

And when you feel in control of your life, you start to believe in yourself more and boost your confidence.

Why Believe in Yourself?

Have you ever heard the quote, “if you believe it, the mind can achieve it?”

Or, “whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right?”

These quotes exist because the mind is incredibly powerful, and your self-belief has the power to either limit you from reaching your full potential or propel you to do great things.

Confidence in yourself equips you to take action. It also helps you  take bigger risks , which can result in bigger rewards.

Positivity works similarly.  Scientific studies have proven that when you experience positive emotions (such as love, joy, or contentment), you’ll see more possibilities in life. Positive thoughts can even build your skill set! Because positive emotions broaden your sense of possibilities, they also help you build new skills and resources. Negative emotions do the opposite.

Bottom line? If you believe in yourself, you’re more likely to succeed–and to be happier in all areas of life. . That is true believe in yourself meaning.

What Does It Mean to Believe in Yourself?

Now that you know why it’s important to believe in yourself, it’s time to define what that actually means and looks like, as it can be a bit different for everyone.

Start by thinking about a goal you have set for yourself. How likely do you think it is that you will take part in actions to accomplish that goal? This is a good indicator of your self-belief.

If you don’t think you’ll accomplish that goal, it may be time to start believing in yourself more.

Self-belief is also about positivity. A positive mindset and positive self-belief go hand in hand. If you have a positive outlook on life, you are more likely to believe in yourself.

Psychology Today explains that if you believe in yourself, you have:

  • Self-worth (the sense that you have value as a human being)
  • Self-confidence (a  positive attitude about your abilities, qualities, and judgment)
  • Self-trust (faith that you can rely on yourself)
  • Autonomy (feeling able to choose and direct your own behavior)
  • Environmental mastery (your belief that your efforts will result in the changes you desire)

If you feel like you don’t believe in yourself, don’t panic. There are actionable steps you can take to have more confidence, trust, and positivity–all of which will lead to a stronger and better sense of self-belief.

Learning how to believe in yourself starts with thinking positively and vocalizing positive statements to yourself to build your self-esteem.

It also includes identifying what your highest values and aspirations in life are and setting expectations so you can be true to yourself — which will let you live your best life.

At the end of the day, believing in yourself doesn’t have to be a complicated process.

Try some of these proven methods to help you believe in yourself and even boost self-confidence.

Believe You Have Confidence

Perhaps one of the hardest things to do in life is to accept how extraordinary you really are, believe in yourself, and then incorporate this awareness into your attitude and personality.

But there is no one like you. You have unique contributions to share with the world that only you can give.

After all, we all have our own talents, skills, and abilities that make us extraordinary.

So one key to having confidence is by saying it. Tell yourself you have confidence, and then believe it.

Your thoughts become words and your words become your actions. So if you continue to tell yourself that you believe in yourself, eventually you really will believe in yourself.

Start by repeating affirmations such as, “I believe in myself,” every day.

It’s that simple.

Have the courage to accept yourself as you really are — not as you might be, or as someone else thinks you should be — and know that taking everything into consideration, you really are worthy to have the kind of life you want. You are an extraordinary person.

Know Your Value

Your beliefs determine your expectations.

If you have positive values, you will believe yourself to be a good person . And, if you believe in yourself to be a good person, good things will happen to you.

When you expect good things to happen to you, you will be more positive, cheerful, and future-oriented. You will look for the good in other people and situations.

For example, if your value is that this is a good world to live in and your belief is that you are going to be very successful in life, you will expect everything that happens to you is helping you in some way.

As a result, you will have a positive mental attitude toward other people, and they will respond positively toward you, helping you be a more cheerful and optimistic person that others will want to work with and for, buy from and sell to, and generally help to be more successful.

Build Self-Esteem

When you take steps toward building your self-esteem, your confidence grows and the natural outcome is that you start to believe in yourself. Use these six elements of self-esteem building to help you learn how to believe in yourself:

Setting clear, accomplishable goals gives you purpose and makes you feel good about yourself. Each step you take toward achieving your goals builds your self-esteem.

People with high self-esteem have high standards, and they make choices that are consistent with their standards. Develop values and ideals that you can be proud of, and make sure your goals are aligned with them.

SUCCESS EXPERIENCES

When you are setting your goals, write down the smaller milestones it will take for you to reach them.  Each positive experience you have with success — large or small — will add to your belief in yourself.

COMPARISON WITH OTHERS

Identify people you respect and look up to, whose standards align with the ones you want to have. As you progress, compare yourself to see how you measure up and get clues about how you can improve.

RECOGNITION

Recognition from people who are important to you, such as your family members, boss, or mentor builds your self-esteem. Striving to achieve your goals will attract recognition.

Along with recognition are tangible rewards. Your self-esteem grows as you work toward and receive a bonus at work, certification or licensure, an advancement in position or level of trust, or other status markers.

Identify, Question, and Overcome Feelings of Self Doubt

If you’re trying to focus on self-improvement, doubt is an important area to tackle. Self-doubt can have a major impact on our lives and whether we reach our goals.

Self-doubt is a feeling of uncertainty about the truth. People who are experiencing self-doubt are unable to accurately judge their own abilities. If you feel unsure of your abilities, this may signal self-doubt.

You can fight against doubt by working on developing self-love and showing yourself more compassion. Give yourself grace when you fail; we all fail from time to time. Think about your strengths and focus on those more than your weaknesses.

Positive self-talk and daily affirmations are also methods that can help you start believing in yourself. We’ll cover those later in this post.

Use Visualization

One final way to better believe in yourself is visualization. Visualization is the practice of imagining your goals coming true–the process you’ll take to reach them, and what it will feel like when they come true.

Visualization  motivates you to get to work. It also helps reduce anxiety and build your self-confidence.

To start trying visualization, sit quietly and take deep breaths to start your visualization practice.

You may want to visualize what your life would ideally look like one year from now.

Do you have a new job? Are you spending lots of quality time with your family? Have you reached a certain goal? Include lots of detail in this visualization (which is almost like a daydream).

You can also get more specific and visualize certain goals coming true. If you want to write a book, picture yourself sitting down at your desk, creating an outline, and beginning to write. Then imagine how it will feel when you sign with a publisher and host your first book signing.

The power of visualization can help us do amazing things.

How to Be More Positive

While believing in yourself and staying positive isn’t something you have to do every hour of every day, it is important to incorporate even a little bit into your everyday life.

Even during the toughest days, try these things to help you experience more positivity in your life.

Incorporate Positive Self-Talk

Positive self-talk is a powerful tool to help you feel better about yourself. According to Healthline, practicing positive self-talk can allow you to enjoy benefits such as:

  • increased vitality
  • greater life satisfaction
  • improved immune function
  • reduced pain
  • better cardiovascular health
  • better physical well-being
  • reduced risk for death
  • less stress and distress

Having a positive attitude is clearly important, and self-talk is a great way to get there.

You can incorporate positive self-talk by speaking to yourself aloud or in your head. Don’t compare yourself to others–just focus on yourself and what you’re doing right.

This might sound like positive affirmations, such as, “I am kind,” “I have value,” or “I will work hard today.” You could also choose to highlight your positive qualities or think about small successes.

Practice Daily Gratitude

Gratitude is one of the key components involved to help you tap into the power of positive thinking. When you practice gratitude, you’re more focused on the blessings that are already in your life. You’ll focus on positive things like your friends, family, and past successes instead of constantly wanting something new.

According to Harvard Health,  studies have actually proved the association between gratitude and a person’s well-being. In one study, people who practiced daily gratitude were more optimistic and felt better about their lives! Your work and personal relationships can improve, too.

Start pursuing gratitude to remind yourself that you have a good life here and now, even if it’s not quite the way you want it to be. Keeping a gratitude journal where you write a few lines every day is a simple method to start shifting your mindset. Follow these tips as you write about what you’re grateful for in your everyday life:

  • Instead of naming something general (“my job”), be specific with an event that happened that day (“my boss investing in me by paying for a webinar”).
  • Stick to the same time of day, each day to help stay consistent.
  • Write a minimum of one thing per day.
  • Record something different every day.

Try Meditation

Meditation is a form of self-reflection that, among other benefits, can help you move past self-doubt and foster a more positive attitude. When you meditate, you clear your mind of distractions. This helps you relax and reduce any anxiety.

There are multiple  types of meditation . You might practice mindfulness meditation, where you quietly observe your thoughts as they pass through your mind. Try focused meditation to concentrate on any of your five senses. Or practice mantra meditation, where you can chant a repetitive sound to clear your mind.

If you struggle with negative thoughts, meditation could be a helpful method of moving past feelings of unsupportive self-disbelief to feel confident in your own life.

Yoga Journal recommends noticing negative thinking patterns and  intentionally replacing them with an opposite thought.

Did you know that regular exercise can help build confidence, foster a growth mindset, and increase your overall self-worth as a human being?

The Mayo Clinic states that  physical exercise stimulates chemicals in your brain that can help you feel happier, more relaxed, and less anxious. Plus, you’ll gain a myriad of physical health benefits–such as improved sleep,  which can make you feel happier , too.

There’s no one “right” way to exercise. The best kind of physical activity for you is whatever fits your own abilities and makes your body feel good.

If you’re new to the fitness world, start exercising by performing simple movements like squats or lifting dumbbells. If you have access to workout equipment, you can walk on a treadmill, ride a bike, or use an elliptical.

A mixture of cardiovascular exercise (like walking, running, or cycling) and strength training (like push-ups and squats) is best.

Make sure to check with your doctor before beginning any new exercise routine.

Being kind to someone isn’t just about the recipient. It benefits you, too. Kindness has been shown to increase self-esteem , empathy, and compassion. It also improves your mood and helps your mind–showing kindness to somebody boosts serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins, which create feelings of happiness.

How can you show kindness to someone else today? Often, small gestures mean just as much as big, flashy ones. Consider using one of the many ideas on this list to take action with kindness:

  • Give a compliment or a word of encouragement
  • Buy a coffee
  • Let someone merge in front of you
  • Give someone your seat
  • Pick up litter
  • Write a good online review
  • Write a thank-you note
  • Talk to a lonely stranger
  • Donate items you no longer need to a local charity
  • Anonymously leave a favorite treat in the break room
  • Mentor someone
  • Babysit for free

How to Improve Self Confidence

Self-confidence is a feeling of complete trust in your abilities , knowledge, and skills.

To be confident means that you have a generally positive attitude and a healthy way of thinking about yourself.

The more you believe in yourself, the more self-confidence you will naturally have.

Read Self-Confidence Books

The more positive elements you have in your life, the easier it is to gain confidence and believe in yourself even more.

Deciding to make small changes in your routine and surroundings can have a big impact on your ability to develop confidence and stay positive. One of the best ways to achieve this is by reading self-confidence books.

When it comes to building self-confidence, there are so many authors who have written about proven methods to help do just that.

Consider reading a few of these works to help you understand how to build self-confidence:

  • “The Power of Self-Confidence” by Brian Tracy
  • “The Confidence Code” by Claire Shipman
  • “Get Out of Your Own Way” by Philip Goldberg and Mark Goulston
  • “The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem: The Definitive Work on Self-Esteem by the Leading Pioneer in the Field” by Nathaniel Branden
  • “Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds”  by David Goggins
  • “The Self Confidence Workbook: A Guide to Overcoming Self-Doubt and Improving Self-Esteem” by Barbara Markway, Celia Ampel, and Teresa Flynn

Remember Your Past Achievements

One of the best ways to combat negative self-talk and boost low self-confidence? Spend some time reflecting on your past success.

Making a list of your accomplishments is a powerful way to gain more confidence in yourself. The list will remind you that you’ve done it before, and you can do it again.

Grab a pen and paper and get to work listing your achievements over your life. You might start out the list something like this:

  • Graduated from college summa cum laude
  • Received an award after six months in my first job
  • Wrote a book on the weekends

If you’re having trouble coming up with items to add to your list, get out of your comfort zone and ask a friend, family member, or colleague for their input on your own abilities.

When your list is complete, stick it somewhere you’ll see it every day, such as your refrigerator door or bathroom mirror.

Improve Your Self Belief

It might take a little work. But over time, you’ll get a sense of where your struggles lie when it comes to self-belief –which will allow you to take action to overcome them.

Believe in Yourself: the Journey Towards Self-Empowerment

To believe in yourself is to know and trust what you're good at. It's not just about hoping for the best. It's about how your personality and your own life stories shape your confidence and ability to handle things yourself. When you face tough times, like health problems, this belief shows its true colors. It helps you stay strong and get through it.

Short Summary

  • Self-Belief's Power: Boost your inner strength by valuing your unique qualities.
  • Self-Efficacy Insights: Grow your self-efficacy by learning from experiences and fostering a mindset open to growth.
  • Positive Thinking Tools: Use affirmations and mindfulness to shift towards positive thoughts and improve mental health.
  • Building Self-Trust: Enhance your self-trust by setting realistic goals and learning from past experiences to boost your confidence.
  • Embracing a Growth Mindset: Adopt a growth mindset, welcoming challenges as learning opportunities in every aspect of life.

Decoding the Science of Self-Belief

To truly grasp self-belief, it's essential to get the idea of self-efficacy. It's about trusting your skills in particular scenarios. People with strong self-efficacy believe in their problem-solving skills and are more resilient. Gaining experience, trying new things, and practicing them builds this trust in ourselves. Self-efficacy also involves a growth mindset, viewing skills as things you can get better at. This thinking helps us grow, manage ourselves better, and lead to a more fulfilling life.

Transforming Negative Self-Talk Into Positive Affirmations

Turning negative self-talk into positive thinking isn't just a one-step thing. Let's break this down into easier chunks with some real tips that have helped others:

  • Pick Your Positive Words : Make a habit of using affirmations. Try simple but powerful phrases like "I've got this" or "Every mistake is a lesson."
  • Rubber Band Trick : Wear a rubber band on your wrist. Whenever you catch yourself thinking negatively, give it a gentle snap to remind yourself to switch gears to positive thoughts.
  • Balance Your Thinking : Instead of focusing on the negative, find a middle ground. For example, if you think, "I messed up," balance it out with, "But I can learn from this".
  • Mindful Self-Talk : Make it a point to flip negative thoughts into positive ones. For example, change "I can't do this" to "This is a chance to learn something new."
  • Dream It, Believe It : Use your imagination to strengthen your affirmations. Picture yourself achieving what you're affirming. Feel it as if it's already true.
  • Celebrate Your Wins : Keep a list or file of all your achievements, no matter how small. This 'brag file' can be a great booster when you're feeling down.
  • Surround Yourself with Positivity : Spend time with people who lift you and support your growth. Their energy can influence your mindset.
  • Grow from the Negative : Turn self-critical thoughts into chances for growth. Shift from "I'm not good enough" to "I'm growing and getting better every day."

Nurturing Self-Trust: Your Key to Believing in Yourself

Key Components Involved in Building Self-Trust:

Deal with Your Inner Critic : Get to know and positively deal with that voice inside that criticizes you. Don't get stuck in past errors or worry too much about what might happen.

Love Taking Care of Yourself : Make self-care a regular thing. Celebrate your wins, big or small. It's a big part of growing self-trust.

Make Goals You Can Reach : Jot down what you're aiming for. Be real with yourself about what's stopping you, and use SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) methods to set clear goals you can achieve.

Embrace Your Sensitivity : If you're deeply sensitive and ambitious, own it. It's a strength. Being alert, inventive, and thoughtful can boost your self-trust game.

Draw Your Lines : Set your boundaries for mental and emotional health. It's key to trusting yourself more.

Grow Stronger From Mistakes : Embrace your errors as lessons. Adopt a mindset that's all about growing, and you'll find yourself more confident and resilient.

Mix Thinking and Feeling : Make choices that reflect both your logic and your feelings. This balance can boost how much you trust yourself.

Listen to Your Heart : Pay attention to your emotions. They're important, and recognizing them is a major step in developing self-trust.

These help you build a strong foundation of self-trust, which is so important for your personal growth and improving your own behavior.

Cultivating a Growth Mindset for Personal And Professional Success

Mindset opposite positivity negativity thinking concept

Building a growth mindset, a term coined by psychologist Carol Dweck , means learning to welcome challenges, learning from your slip-ups, and valuing hard work. This mindset is about opening your mind to new ideas, being keen to learn, and shaking off doubts about yourself. It is good life's a never-ending journey of making yourself better.

Take the story of Michael Jordan , the basketball legend. His unwavering commitment, endless practice, and knack for learning from his errors made him one of the best in the sport. His journey shows us that true success is often the result of ongoing effort and a readiness to learn from past mistakes.

But this growth mindset isn't just for climbing the career ladder. It's also vital for your personal happiness and mental health. It helps people deal with stress, become stronger, develop self-love, and enjoy the process of personal growth. This approach can make a big difference in both your work and personal life.

Overcoming Self-Doubt Through Self-Reflection And Action

To beat self-doubt is key to understanding where it comes from, like our upbringing or things we've been through. It helps us to talk to ourselves positively and treat ourselves kindly. Remembering our past wins, not comparing ourselves to others, focusing on what we're good at, and staying mindful can boost our confidence. All these actions work together to make us feel more sure of ourselves.

Embracing Your Strengths: Building a Positive Self-Image

Creating a positive view of yourself is really about a journey that doesn't end. It starts from the moment we're little, with how people around us treat us and what we learn from them.

It's about seeing what's good in ourselves and being honest about what we're not so great at. Just like you'd be kind to a friend who's feeling down, being kind to yourself is super important.

Staying active, hanging out with friends who lift you, and doing work that means something to you can make a huge difference in how you feel about yourself. A

lso, taking a break from social media now and then is a good idea because it can make you feel less pressured to be perfect. All these things add up to feeling better about who you are and enjoying life more.

Developing Self-Love And High Self-Esteem

Building self-love and strong self-esteem is really about cherishing who you are in this very moment while also being kind and understanding to yourself, especially when things get tough. Think about what makes you only you, and don't shy away from praise.

Taking care of your body through things like working out and eating well can make a huge difference in how you feel about yourself. Helping others is also a great way to boost how you see yourself; it shows you can make a real difference.

Kristie Overstreet, a therapist, suggests a bit of self-reflection can go a long way. Think back to when you felt really good about yourself. What was different? What were you doing? Insights from these times can be golden in helping you feel better now.

Dr. David Simonsen has a similar take. He says getting involved in activities that make you feel proud, like helping out in your community, can lift your spirits. It's not just about feeling good. It's about doing good, too.

In short, being good to yourself and to others, recognizing your worth and your positive qualities, and taking care of your mind and body are key steps to loving yourself and feeling confident.

Establishing Healthy Routines to Reinforce Your Self-Belief

Talk to Yourself Kindly : When you catch yourself being hard on yourself, try saying something kinder and more understanding. It's like giving yourself a pep talk!

Try New Things : Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Whether it's a new hobby or a challenging task, go for it. It's a great confidence booster.

Take Good Care of Yourself : This means eating well, getting enough exercise, and resting. It's not just about your body, but your mind and feelings, too.

Swap Bad for Good : If you have habits that aren't great for you, try replacing them with better ones. Instead of reaching for a candy bar, how about a brisk walk?

Celebrate the Small Stuff : Got something done? Pat yourself on the back. It's important to recognize even the little victories.

Learn from Mistakes : It's okay to mess up. What's important is that you learn from these slip-ups and use them to only get better.

Stay Away from the Downers : Surround yourself with positivity and avoid things that bring you down. This could be people, places, or even certain activities.

Keep Going, Patiently : Change doesn't happen overnight. Be patient with yourself and keep at it, even if it feels slow.

Imagine Your Success : Picture yourself achieving your goals. It's a powerful way to motivate yourself.

Get Support : Don't be shy about leaning on friends, family, or groups for support. Having people to back you up can help.

Remember, all these steps are about building up the belief you have in yourself.

Tackling Life's Challenges With Confidence And Belief

Start with recognizing your strengths and understanding the hurdles you face. Building resilience is key. It's like a muscle you develop with time and effort. Change your body language for a quick confidence lift, and don't shy away from embracing your emotions and learning from failures.

A strong support network and self-care are essential. Sharpen your problem-solving skills, stay persistent, and be ready to adapt. With these tools at your disposal, you can confidently face any challenges that may arise.

Expert Advice: Fostering a Positive Mindset for Well-Being

Building a positive mindset is key to both feeling good and succeeding at work. The idea of "Positive psychological capital," or PsyCap, introduced by Luthans and Youssef back in 2004, really shows how having a bright outlook can make a difference in our jobs. It's linked to being happier at work, really committing to what you do, and feeling better overall. Plus, it helps reduce stress and negative thinking.

So, how can we get this positive mindset? Well, it starts with taking care of ourselves. That means focusing on the good stuff, not the bad, and maybe even trying out loving-kindness meditation. Top health experts like those at the Mayo Clinic and NHS recommend a bunch of other great strategies, too.

Engaging in positive self-talk, maintaining good health, practicing mindfulness, and setting meaningful personal goals are not just beneficial for individual well-being. These practices also enhance our abilities.

Discovering Your Inner Strength: a Guide to Personal Qualities

Finding your inner strengths is a personal journey that blends self-exploration.

Self-Exploration : Ask yourself what drives you, how you work, and what habits help or hinder you. This helps you understand yourself better, both inside and out.

Identifying Key Traits : Check out lists that highlight different character strengths.

Getting Others' Perspectives : Chat with your friends and family about what they think your strengths are. They might point out something you never noticed.

Using Online Tools : There are loads of tests and tools online that can help you figure out your strengths.

Building Inner Strength : Simple daily challenges can strengthen your resolve. Things like skipping the news, cutting sugar from your coffee, or getting up early when it's cold.

Creating a Supportive Environment : The people around you and your environment play a big role in how you see yourself. Stick with people who inspire and support you.

Remember, learning about your strengths is an ongoing process.

Authenticity: the Essence of Believing in Yourself

Living authentically is all about staying true to what you believe in and value, a journey that's not just a one-time thing but a continuous process. It means looking inside yourself, being real about what you find, and letting that guide how you act. When you're in sync with your inner values, you feel a sense of happiness and fulfillment. But, if there's a mismatch, you might feel uneasy. Using tools like meditation and mindfulness, you can get better at understanding yourself, which helps keep your actions and beliefs in harmony.

Goal Achievement: How Self-Belief Fuels Success

Believing in yourself matters when it comes to reaching your goals, too. When you set goals, it's like lighting a path that shows both your strong points and what you need to work on. It's like giving yourself a pep talk and a plan all in one. This whole idea fits snugly into positive psychology, which tells us to play to our strengths and stay true to what we value most.

Trying new things, even if they scare you a bit, and looking after yourself are big boosts to believing in yourself. It's okay to fall flat sometimes. Each stumble is a lesson, not a loss. Remember, it's all about keeping a positive mindset and learning as you go.

Believing in yourself is deeply woven into our life's fabric. It's a path enriched by positive self-talk, building trust in oneself, and developing a mindset geared toward growth. This journey empowers us to tackle life's hurdles. Gaining self-confidence is a continuous process, mixing self-recognition with ongoing improvement. It's this transformative process that shapes not only how we see ourselves but also how we connect with everything around us.

Embrace the fact that you are more than just the sum of your achievements or the validation you receive from others. Your worth is not determined by external validation but by your own self-perception and the value you place on yourself.

Start by reflecting on your strengths and acknowledging the positive impact you have on those around you. Recognize the qualities that make you special and valuable, whether it’s your kindness, creativity, or ability to empathize with others. Celebrate these attributes and let them serve as a foundation for your self-worth.

It’s important to cultivate a healthy mindset that focuses on self-love and self-acceptance. Be kind to yourself, embracing both your strengths and your imperfections. Remember, nobody is perfect, and it’s the combination of our strengths and weaknesses that makes us who we are.

Remember that self-worth requires ongoing self-reflection and self-care. Take time to nurture yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment, whether it’s practicing mindfulness, pursuing a hobby, or spending time in nature.

2. practice daily self-affirmations..

Self-affirmations are powerful tools that can help boost your self-worth and reinforce positive beliefs about yourself. By incorporating daily self-affirmations into your routine, you can cultivate a mindset of self-love, confidence, and resilience.

Start your day by looking yourself in the mirror and saying kind and empowering words. Affirmations like “I am worthy,” “I am enough,” and “I deserve happiness” can set a positive tone for the day ahead. Repeat these affirmations with conviction and believe in their truth.

Throughout the day, remind yourself of your strengths and capabilities. Whenever you accomplish a task or overcome a challenge, acknowledge your efforts and celebrate your achievements. For example, if you successfully complete a project at work, say to yourself, “I did an excellent job, and I am proud of my hard work.”

When faced with self-doubt or negative thoughts , counteract them with positive affirmations. For instance, if you catch yourself thinking, “I am not good enough,” replace that thought with, “I am capable and deserving of success.” By consciously challenging negative self-talk, you can redirect your focus towards self-empowerment and positivity.

Consider writing down your affirmations and keeping them in a place where you can easily see them. Whether it’s on a sticky note on your desk or as a screensaver on your phone, having visual reminders of your self-worth can be incredibly helpful. Repeat these affirmations whenever you need a boost of confidence or a reminder of your inherent value.

Incorporating mindfulness into your daily self-affirmation practice can further deepen its impact. Take a few moments each day to sit in silence, close your eyes, and connect with your inner self. As you breathe deeply, affirm positive statements about yourself, such as “I am grateful for who I am” or “I radiate love and positivity.”

By practicing daily self-affirmations, you can rewire your thoughts, boost your self-esteem, and cultivate a strong sense of self-worth. Embrace the power of positive self-talk and affirm your inherent value each day. You deserve to embrace your worth and live a life filled with self-acceptance, confidence, and fulfillment.

One way to value your time is by setting clear priorities and boundaries. Identify what truly matters to you and allocate your time accordingly. This could involve creating a schedule or to-do list that reflects your goals and priorities. By focusing on the tasks and activities that align with your values and aspirations, you can make deliberate choices that contribute to your sense of self-worth.

It is also important to recognize and respect your personal limits. Avoid over committing yourself and learn to say no when necessary. Instead, focus on using technology in a way that supports your self-worth and personal growth.

How to Believe in Yourself and Let Others In

Collaboration involves trusting others and yourself..

Posted June 23, 2021 | Reviewed by Chloe Williams

Believing in yourself completely is a little like unconditional love: It is all too rare. I don’t mean to depress you, but that’s the reality for most of us earthlings. That’s why it’s so important to gather those moments of self-belief together to get the inspiration you need. If you don’t trust yourself enough, it’s hard to let others in.

You can’t do everything on your own. And in all aspects of life, it’s pretty tough to create anything larger than yourself if everything you work on has to be all yours. Collaborating with others allows you to add a new dimension to your life and your work. And collaboration means trusting others and yourself to come up with something good.

Here’s an example of how self-belief begins and then can go sideways. You start with an idea and do what you can to bring it to life. You involve other people, and they bring in new ideas. Then what started off as an expression of your deeper self becomes a group project, and you may fear that your original vision is getting distorted.

As a writer, I have no one else in my head; if that writing becomes a column and that column becomes a book or a television show, then my brain and creativity get populated with many other voices, and my ideas get shifted. This is not bad; it’s just part of the process. The trick is not to get your ego bent if all your ideas aren’t taken in the form you presented them. This is true collaboration, and the most talented people in the world use it.

For example, George Harrison was in a little band called the Beatles and he was working on a song titled “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” He brought the song to the band, and they didn’t think it was strong enough, so he called his buddy Eric Clapton, who added a couple of his touches to it, and it became a hit. Justin Bieber went through the same thing with “Love Yourself” and sent it to Ed Sheeran for a polish.

It’s great to have talented people working with you, and you can trust that the people whom you’ve chosen are creative and smart enough to help you get the job done, or you would not have picked them. Then you can create your artwork, your business, or your life in a way that allows you to express yourself while encompassing the best that others can offer.

It’s satisfying to remember that you inspired this project, a fact that will never change or go away. Unfortunately, I have seen people overly worry about losing control; but that worry just causes you stress , and things won’t turn out as well. You have to learn to let go a little and see what others can bring. If it’s not exactly what you want, you can always add a few more touches, like Eric did for George, and make it a hit.

Right now is when we need new ideas. We need them implemented as soon as possible, and that takes a village. Luckily, most of us have a desire to be part of something larger than ourselves.

Speech on Believe In Yourself

Believing in yourself is like unlocking a secret superpower. It’s the key to reaching your goals and dreams.

When you trust your abilities, you become unstoppable. So, let’s explore why it’s important to believe in yourself.

1-minute Speech on Believe In Yourself

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I stand before you today to speak on a topic that is as simple as it is profound, ‘Believe In Yourself.’ Yes, this is an idea, a notion, a spark that can ignite a revolution within your world, shaping the trajectory of your life.

Each one of us has dreams, goals, objectives, and aspirations. However, more often than not, we find ourselves doubting our abilities or strengths. We question if we are capable enough to achieve our dreams. But remember, every great achiever, every successful individual started with two things – a dream and the belief in their ability to accomplish that dream.

Believing in ourselves is not about being overconfident or disregarding the advice and opinions of others. Instead, it is about having faith in our potential, trusting our journey, and understanding our worth. It’s about knowing that we are more than capable of overcoming the obstacles that life throws at us.

The road to our dreams may not always be easy. There may be twists and turns, failures and setbacks. But it’s our self-belief that acts as a guiding light, illuminating our path even in the darkest of times. It gives us the courage to push forward, to get up every time we fall, to learn from our mistakes and to never stop trying.

In conclusion, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to say – believe in yourself, even when no one else does. Trust in your abilities, even when the world doubts you. Remember, you are your most significant supporter and your most cruel critic. The power to achieve your dreams lies within you. So stand tall, dream big, believe in yourself, and watch as the world unfolds its magic before you.

2-minute Speech on Believe In Yourself

Today I’m here to speak on a topic that may sound simple but is incredibly profound – ‘Believe in Yourself’. This phrase might appear as a cliché in the world of motivational speeches, but its depth and impact on our lives are undeniable.

Belief in oneself is the very crux of our existence. Without it, we are like a rudderless ship in a stormy sea. Believing in yourself means acknowledging your own capabilities, understanding your strengths, and having faith in your own decisions. It’s about trusting yourself enough to take that leap of faith.

Just imagine a world where Thomas Edison did not believe he could create the light bulb, where the Wright brothers did not believe they could make a plane fly or a world where Bill Gates did not believe in his vision of a computer in every home. These people achieved greatness because they believed in themselves and their vision, even when the world was skeptical.

What makes this belief so important? When we believe in ourselves, we set the stage for continuous growth and learning. It enables us to overcome the fear of failure, because we understand that failure is not a dead end, but a stepping stone to success. Self-belief empowers us to take risks and to venture into unknown territories with courage and confidence.

However, we often let self-doubt creep in, undermining our self-belief. We start questioning our abilities and skills. We let the opinions of others sway us, and we allow failure to dampen our spirit. This self-doubt acts like a chain, holding us back and preventing us from achieving our full potential.

How then, can we cultivate and strengthen this belief in ourselves? Firstly, we need to acknowledge our achievements, no matter how small they might seem. We must celebrate our victories, for they are the testament of our capabilities. Secondly, we must not let our failures define us. Instead, we should learn from them and use these lessons to grow. Lastly, we must surround ourselves with positivity, with people who support and believe in us.

In the end, ladies and gentlemen, the truth is that the only person who can truly hinder your journey to success is yourself. So, believe in yourself, your dreams, your abilities and your potential. Have the courage to trust your own decisions, to make mistakes and learn from them.

In the words of the great American poet, E.E. Cummings, “Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit.”

So, with this, I urge each one of you, to believe in who you are, believe in where you want to be and believe that you possess the strength within you to make your dreams come true. And remember, to believe in yourself is the first secret to success.

"you can do it": my hero academia finally explains why deku is the greatest hero.

Without noticing, Deku has become a symbol of change, bringing with him a new and better society for everyone.

  • Deku in My Hero Academia has become a symbol of hope & inspiration, inspiring others to fight for a better world.
  • His Quirkless background allowed him to empathize & empower those who feel powerless, creating a more just society.
  • While Deku is the World's Greatest Hero, his classmates & allies have also played a crucial role in creating a new era of heroes.

One of the first details revealed about Deku in My Hero Academia , is that he will go on to become the World’s Greatest Hero. When the series began, this could have meant that Izuku would be the one to bring the main antagonists down, saving the world by himself. However, the Final War Arc has finally revealed why he is the best hero , and it has nothing to do with defeating All For One.

Throughout the series, Deku has become an inspiration, a symbol of hope and safety for those saved by the young hero. On his quest to become the new Symbol of Peace, like All Might before him, Izuku became something much more important . While Toshinori kept Japan safe by himself for years, Deku inspired old and new generations of Heroes to join forces and keep their country safe by working together.

My Hero Academia's Ending Proves All Might Was Actually Wrong

Japan no longer needs a lonely pillar of peace, deku will not become the only powerful hero in japan.

The people who have been saved or helped by Izuku have gone on to do their part to create a better world.

Early in his career, All Might cemented himself as the hero who would single-handedly keep Japan safe from evil. He became a pillar of society, making people secure in the idea that All Might would forever keep them safe. This philosophy kept Japan one of the world's most secure countries for many decades. Woefully, it also became the country’s biggest weakness, as their pace became reliant on a single man . When Japan inevitably fell after All Might’s retirement, Deku came in to change everything. Despite being unaware of it, Deku has slowly become a symbol that inspires people to fight for themselves.

Ever since his journey to become a hero began, Deku has been changing the minds of people around him. He is the one who helped Todoroki accept his Quirk, for example. Izuku is also the one who helped Kota believe in heroes once again. He even became Eri’s savior, taking down Overhaul and bringing hope back to a scared little girl. The people who have been saved or helped by Izuku have gone on to do their part to create a better world.

Todoroki began using his fire and helped his family, while Kota and Eri want to become heroes like Deku. They are not counting on Midoriya always being there to save them and have become proactive in getting stronger. When his battle against Shigaraki and All For One was broadcast worldwide, Deku’s inspiring nature began spreading at a rapid pace. Many heroes who were reluctant to join the fight became active combatants, as seen in chapter 420 of the manga. Deku has become a new symbol, one that will boost cooperation between heroes, creating a better future.

Deku’s Quirkless Nature Was Fundamental To His Hero Journey

Deku knows what it is like to believe yourself to be powerless.

For most of his life, Izuku was treated as a lesser human being for his lack of a Quirk . His best friend Bakugo became his biggest tormenter , society itself told him that he was useless, and even his mother doubted if he could achieve his dream. Unlike All Might, who also grew up Quirkless, Deku did not have the comfort that many other Quirkless people existed, as the number rapidly decreased in Japan since Toshinori’s school years. Izuku grew up alone, hoping that someone would come save him from his self-loathing.

Since then, Deku has been granted the power to become his ideal of a hero, one that can inspire others to stand up for themselves. In a society as filled with inequalities, discrimination, and corruption as My Hero Academia ’s, this kind of hero is just what the world needs. Kids will know that even without a Quirk they are worthy of being heroes. Characters like Bakugo, who used to see Izuku as a burden, have become more open-minded, going as far as to apologize for his misdeeds. Izuku’s past is what allowed him to become the greatest hero ever, one that will create a better society.

My Hero Academia Already Undid Its Most Tragic Twist

Deku is not the only great hero of his generation, students from various hero academies have proven themselves equally valuable..

Deku is without a doubt one of the most important and powerful heroes of this new generation. Yet, he is not the only one who deserves to be praised for his contributions. While Izuku will most certainly be the one to receive the title of World’s Greatest Hero, his classmates and allies have also greatly contributed to the creation of a new society. Heroes like Shoji, who is fighting hard to spread awareness about Heteromorph discrimination , or Shinzo, who has been told all his life that he has a villainous Quirk.

These young heroes have been just as important as Deku in stopping All For One’s forces and ensuring that the same issues that helped the villain rise are addressed. Alongside Izuku, they will likely become icons of change, being some of the most important figures for the betterment of society. This is one of the key main differences between the kind of hero Izuku has become when compared to All Might. Toshinori, in his desire to maintain peace, unconsciously kept the spotlight to himself . He denied other heroes the chance to become engines of change.

Deku, who is aware that he could have not gotten to where he is alone, has actively encouraged others to step up and become the Heroes that society needs. While Izuku is not the reason why characters like Shoji fight for change, he did help him in his journey. The next generation of heroes will never have to carry their burdens alone, as they will always have a helping hand nearby. Izuku and his friends have become the symbols of a better and more just future.

Despite being unaware of his importance in the world, Deku has slowly become the hero that Japan, and the rest of the world, needed, a noble warrior who motivates others to become better and fight for justice. Izuku was not lying when he introduced himself during chapter 1 of My Hero Academia , he has truly become the World’s Greatest Hero, and fans can finally understand why.

How to Help Yourself and Others with Suicidal Ideation

December 14, 2022

By Ginger Robertson

Person holding an umbrella for another person

In my late teens, I struggled with drug use. I didn’t care if I lived or died because I didn’t feel like my life was worth living in this world. I was able to come off the drugs through a six-week drug class I took to expunge an arrest. After getting through the program, I worked on seeing my own self-worth. Even after this work, I later had three episodes of serious suicidal ideation over the next 20 years.

Depression can be a lifelong rollercoaster that goes up, down, fast, slow — and sometimes it’s a smooth, steady ride. I really want people to know that the negative thought cycle that accompanies depression often is not a “one and done” victory. Survival is something to celebrate but so is the journey.

I don’t want to focus on the whys — why people experience suicidal ideation — that’s for my therapy sessions (yes, I go to therapy, and I take medication). What I want to focus on is how to help yourself and others.

What does Suicidal Ideation Feel Like?

To better understand thought process of someone who considers taking their own life, I want you to imagine a bike trail through the woods. Bike riders on this path all fall into the same groove in the ground. Bikers are not likely to veer off the trail to avoid the groove in the ground unless something else is blocking it — forcing a redirection. Also, the more this path is used, the deeper the groove gets in the ground, and it becomes easier and easier to fall into.

This is how our thoughts work, particularly negative thoughts. It takes real effort and attentiveness to create a new trail and avoid the old one. When the trail gets deep, a person’s reality might become distorted and thoughts may become irrational, but the person may not see that. Instead, they see and feel their reality. They may have uncontrollable dark fantasies of how to end their life.

It may help to know these patterns in others to increase understanding when supporting someone struggling with these difficult thoughts.

How to Help Others

Now that you know a little about what’s going on inside the mind of someone struggling with suicidal ideation, let’s go over what actions you can take for a person experiencing these thoughts.

If you just want to help, but aren’t sure if you know anyone that is struggling with suicidal thoughts; you can help be part of prevention:

  • You are becoming part of the solution just by reading this. Thank you.
  • In all conversations, try not to use negative or dismissive language about depression, mental health and suicidal ideation.
  • Know that depression looks different on everyone, especially in public.

If you know someone struggling with suicidal thoughts:

  • Recognize that this isn’t a choice, or something being said or done to hurt you.
  • Listen and be there without advice, judgement or expectation.
  • Don’t dismiss the subject or take it as a manipulative threat. Take it as a condition that needs treatment and care.
  • Don’t just tell them to go to the ER or just send the cops. Rather, go to them, speak to them, and if needed — drive them to the ER with compassion.
  • If you cannot go to them and feel they are in imminent and immediate danger — call a welfare check on them.

How to Help Yourself

If you have struggled with suicidal thoughts in the past:

  • Make a mental note of two to three safe and supportive people that you can share these thoughts with.
  • Don’t stop therapy or medications because you feel better. You may feel better because of therapy and medications. They are important.
  • Take care of yourself in the best way you can. This includes surrounding yourself with supportive people and doing things that uplift you.

If you are struggling right now:

  • Tell your safe, supportive friends. Talk about it. Don’t isolate yourself.
  • Tell your therapist and/or psychiatrist. Set up appointments if you do not have them already set up.
  • If you are in a crisis, call or text 988 or to the ER if needed.

It’s been six months since I’ve had any suicidal ideation. This wasn’t without work. I created a new trail in the woods, and I’m riding steadily on this path. I also take precautions in case I fall back into the old trail — I don’t own items that could be used for self-harm. I stay in touch with my friends, my support system. I take my medications and heed the advice of my therapist to the best of my ability. In retrospect, it’s hard to see how low I got — but I know I have to work to stay well and that I survived it. I can pat myself on the back every day for this.

“Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing we’ll ever do”-Brene Brown

Congratulations are in order for retired U.S. soccer star Carli Lloyd.

The former USWNT midfielder-turned-Fox Sports analyst is expecting her first child with her husband Brian Hollins in October after a challenging infertility journey, Lloyd, 41, shared Wednesday on social media.

“It has been a rollercoaster of a journey to get to this point,” she wrote, including a photo of an ultrasound image. “We are beyond excited to be parents! I couldn’t have gotten through this without my amazing husband, Brian. He truly kept me going.”

Carli Lloyd is expecting her first child with husband Brian Hollis in October 2024.

Lloyd went through three rounds of IVF treatment, with the final one taking place at the end of January, she wrote in an article for Women’s Health .

Lloyd found out she was pregnant while in Scottsdale to play in the Waste Management Pro-Am, which took place in February.

Carli Lloyd plays a tee shot on the first hole during the Pro-am to the WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale on February 7, 2024 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

“Brian was just waking up as I shared the news,” she wrote. “We hugged and held each other and, for the first time in a long time, felt at peace.”

Lloyd went on to explain that this experience has brought her and Brian closer than she had ever imagined.

“I couldn’t have gotten through it without him. He kept me going. He would say, ‘Just trust. Trust that it’s going to work out,'” she said. “His strength and calmness was something I never realized I needed.”

Lloyd is a two-time FIFA Player of the Year Award winner, two-time World Cup winner and two-time Olympic gold medalist.

“It is still hard to believe I am pregnant,” she said. “It truly is a miracle, and we are so excited to be parents!”

Lloyd, who retired in 2021 after a 22-year playing career, is hoping to play a role in helping other women facing challenges in their pregnancy journey.

“I want to show other women that it’s okay to struggle,” she said. “It’s okay to feel broken and to feel hopeless, but to never give up and to keep going. We don’t know the future chapters of our lives, and it is important to just keep putting one foot in front of the other.

“… Since I retired, my heart has come alive. I have felt I can be more like myself. I am not in the pressure cooker anymore. I can let my guard down and be more vulnerable.”

Lloyd played 316 matches with the USWNT and scored 134 goals for the United States, the third most in team history.
