Table of contents, trek powerfly 7 equipped review (2023).
Trek’s Powerfly range is the company’s answer to a sporty commuter, which is designed to bridge the gap from the urban environment to the trails. The range of hardtail e-MTBs were brought out to be versatile, capable of holding their own on their dirt, but also capable for the daily routine of life or a companion on long distance tours.
The range comes in many different guises, from the super sporty FS versions, which come naked at the rear, or the Equipped versions, which have racks over the back wheel to take panniers or bags. The Powerfly 7 Equipped is the second highest spec bike in the Equipped series.
So, has Trek been able to really master multiple terrains and purposes at once? Or is it a case of this bike being a Jack of all trades, and master of none? Let’s find out…
Our Verdict
Congratulations to the crew at Trek – the company has created a belting bike here.
It’s very hard to straddle the worlds of commuter, trail and tourer – and the folk at Trek have managed it here.
The bike features excellent component pairing, with a top end Bosch battery and motor, a seriously robust frame and durable wheel components – it’s made for lots and lots… and lots of riding.
It isn’t a gnarly single-track shredder, and it doesn’t pretend to be, but it gets the elements it needs to get right absolutely spot on.
Potentially, the suspension deserves an upgrade given the price, but apart from that we’re pretty stoked with this one.

- Commutable & tour riding friendly
Trek Powerfly 7 Equipped
Price: $6,266
Weight/frame.
The Powerfly 7 Equipped comes with an Alpha Platinum compound aluminium frame.
The bike is made to be robust and is fitted with a pannier/bag cage over the back wheel, so it’s usable on the daily commute or on touring style rides.
It’s a solid bike and you feel very stable up top, exactly what you need from a bike which might have to balance extra weight on the back from luggage.
That comes at a cost, though, the overall weight of the bike comes in at 25.12kg (in a size medium), so it is a bit of a beast to contend with.
The bike comes in 5 frame sizes – extra small , small , medium , large and extra large – with the weight varying slightly between them.
You feel that extra weight out on the trickier trails, it doesn’t manipulate well and feels very cumbersome, but really – the bike isn’t made for technical trails or on seriously sharp up and down terrain.
It’s made to be a loyal partner on longer, flatter, distances and it certainly holds its own on the gravel or on a dirt road with a few lumps.
The Powerfly 7 Equipped comes with a chunky 625Wh Bosch PowerTube battery . The bike is made to take on some longer distance riding and the Bosch battery offers the capabilities to keep pushing on longer and longer.
Given the bike isn’t made for super technical and steep trail-based inclines, that battery actually stretches a long old way and it’s ultra reliable. On the flatter style of terrain you’re likely to be tackling, the battery gives you hours and hours of fun.
How Long Does a Trek Powerfly Battery Last?
We found on our review rides that we got well over 100km on one charge, with juice still to go on with. It’s secured tightly into the downtube and is easily removable with a simple click system.
The PowerTube takes around five hours to fully charge from dead and only two hours to get to 50%, which means you can get back out on the road/trail at pace. A fitting battery for this burly bike.
The Powerfly 7 Equipped comes with a seriously powerful Bosch Performance CX motor , which can punch out up to 85Nm of torque. We’re very impressed with this pairing yet again from Trek.
That extra kick takes the edge off the bike’s overall weight and means you don’t have any anxiety when approaching a large hill. The power is delivered in a super-natural way and it doesn’t give off any unusual drag or overshoot.
It also works very intelligently with the battery to release the power conservatively. Overall, it’s a stunning partnership for a bike, which could feel very sluggish – however, the electrical components are well matched to the bike’s needs.
Motor Display
The Powerfly 7 Equipped is fitted with a Bosch Kiox display – another excellent choice from Trek. The Kiox is a best friend while out riding, offering your battery percentage as an exact percentage – praise the Lord!
It’s exactly what we want and now expect from a motor display, but it doesn’t always happen. The Kiox offers much more than that, though. It also offers calorie consumption data, pedalling cadence, speed, distance to your destination, among many other features. You can also link it up to a heart rate monitor via Bluetooth to keep on top of your performance.
We found it a beautiful display to accompany us on our review rides and it elevated the overall ride experience.
The Trek Powerfly 7 Equipped is a hardtail e-MTB, so only comes fitted with front suspension. It’s one of the reasons the bike is so good on the longer distance rides and on urban streets – you don’t suffer from any unnecessary bounce or sponginess from the back end.
At the front end the bike comes with SR Suntour Zeron 35, air-sprung, front forks , which have 120mm of travel . Listen, the forks are a bit uninspiring if we’re honest, but you haven’t bought this bike to launch of jumps and take on huge downhill routes.
The bike has enough give to cope with the demands of a touring cycle and on your daily commute.
ℹ️ Another moment to be very aware of what you’re looking at here. This isn’t an all gnarly trail rider, so steer clear if that’s what you want.
Wheels/Tyres
The Trek Powerfly 7 Equipped is fitted with different wheel sizes, depending on the size of frame you go for. For the extra small and small versions you’ll get a 27.5in wheel setup, but a larger 29in setup on the medium , large and extra large frame sizes.
The bike comes with Bontrager Line Comp 30 wheels and Bontrager LT4 Expert tyres . Both are a really decent accompaniment for the type of strains the bike is put under. The wheels are super durable and ultra strong – capable of taking the extra weight of luggage and long distance use.
The tyres offer enough bite on the dirt, but also shed very well on hard packed and on concrete – useful so that you aren’t carting extra drag around for hours on end.
The Powerfly 7 Equipped comes with a 4-piston, hydraulic disc brake setup , with M6100 levers and M6120 callipers . They offer enough bite to bring you to a halt when needed. They aren’t all singing, all dancing, but you don’t need them to be.
The Powerfly 7 Equipped comes with a 12-speed SLX M7100 group set . They offer smooth shifting and an ease of use, which you need when spending hours up top on the pedals. The pairing does everything you need them to.
A decent price point for the Trek Powerfly 7 Equipped. We’re impressed with the ability to include those high spec Bosch components for the price and there aren’t many points to grumble about throughout the whole bike. Bravo to the Trek team.

How Does it Compare?
A good range of bikes to compare the Powerfly 7 Equipped to is the Canyon Grand Canyon:ON series.
The Grand Canyon:ON bikes are made for the same purpose – with the aim of being versatile rides, capable of switching from road to dirt and useful for commuters, along with being comfortable over longer distances.
We’ve recently reviewed the Grand Canyon:ON 8, so will shine the spotlight on this bike in our comparison.
Firstly, the Powerfly 7 Equipped is more than $2,500 more expensive, but is it worth the extra money?
The Grand Canyon:ON 8 is lighter by 3kg, but it is far more poorly kitted out in the electronics department. The Shimano components, despite offering the same sort of power and battery life, are far inferior.
The Shimano Steps EP8 on the Canyon doesn’t touch the Bosch Performance CX motor on our Trek. And the user experience is far poorer, too. The display on the Canyon is disappointing and our Kiox 300 is magnificent.
You also can’t just clip out your battery on your Canyon, it has to be unscrewed, which is a pain in the backside. The Canyon shades it with a RockShox suspension, with the same 120mm of travel.
The wheels, brakes and drivetrain on both are solid and do the job needed. Overall, it’s a tough call, but we found the overall user experience far more enjoyable on the Trek, compared to the Canyon.
You may pay more, but we think you’re getting a much better rounded package.
Final Thoughts
We think Trek has done beautifully here. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed riding the Powerfly 7 Equipped in our review rides. It’s a versatile e-MTB, which can take on many different types of terrain and do so with a flourish.
Be it commuting in the city, heading out on a long touring cycle or a quick rip through some forest roads and minor trails – the bike handles it well. They’ve selected their component partnerships excellently and the bike rides a dream.
Our only qualm would be the suspension – for the price you’re paying, we think Trek could have pushed the boat out more. It isn’t cheap for this sort of bike, but you won’t be let down.
At least that’s our view, now go out and find out for yourselves.

Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped review
An assisted full-suspension, big-travel commuter?
Russell Burton / Immediate Media
Russell Burton
Comfort; range; stability
Expensive, especially if you’re considering leaving it outside the local shop
The FS9 is top of Trek’s four-model Powerfly Equipped range of electric bikes designed to combine practicality for commuting with the off-road fun of the best mountain bikes .
Its specification, which combines a long-range 625Wh battery, a Bosch Performance 250W motor and a full-suspension setup with powerful four-piston brakes, is sending a message that it won’t flinch when the going gets tough.
Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped specifications
At first glance, all that off-road tech seems at odds with the bike’s more sedate features, which include integrated full-length mudguards, a kickstand and built-in lights.
Trek’s promo video shows the sort of shopping trip we all wish we had, with a route mixing road and scenic dirt track, and I approached my first ride on the Powerfly hoping this could be the commuter bike of my dreams .
The strong Bontrager Line Comp 30 wheels, shod in chunky 29x2.4in tyres, the SR Suntour Zeron 35 120mm suspension fork and RockShox SID Luxe Select rear shock are pulled from the mountain biking world.
It’s a combination that would normally be compromised by its weight for commuting, but in pairing it with an 85Nm motor so powerful as to be unbothered by extra heft, Trek has managed to optimise the Powerfly for the commute.
And who wouldn’t want comfortable, grippy tyres, powerful brakes and plush suspension?
That suspension was something that gave me pause for thought before testing – can a full-suspension machine with a mountain bike heritage be efficient on the road? Yes. Keep reading to find out how.
Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped geometry
Trek powerfly fs9 equipped battery life.
Not that I have experienced problems with battery range, regularly riding 70-90km, including over 1,000m of climbing, and arriving home with plenty in the tank.
There are four modes – Eco, Tour (eMTB Lite), eMTB and Turbo – and even on longer routes, I didn’t have to drop to Eco to preserve battery life, riding mainly in Tour mode with short boosts of added power.
Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped ride impressions
I’d not used this fork before and it surprised me – in a good way. It's stiff enough to support the bike’s weight, it doesn’t bounce when you’re pedalling hard on the road, yet it sucks up the chatter of poor tarmac.
Transitioning to forest tracks, it smooths the ride so you barely lose speed over rocks and roots.
The rear shock is unusually positioned behind the seatpost, but is protected by the full mudguard. It absorbs the bumps but, as with the fork, doesn’t bounce. It plants the back wheel into the ground in a way that feels secure and maintains grip right through corners.
That security and control is underlined by the Shimano XT four-piston brakes, which are strong enough to slow the weight of the bike quickly and smoothly without locking.
The Powerfly FS9 Equipped seems to love going fast in a straight line the most, and the distances I’ve ridden on a mix of roads and tracks are testament to its comfort and ride appeal.
It does, however, have limits on more technical terrain.
I’ve ridden it over the same terrain I use for testing the best electric mountain bikes , and there is no comparison – it doesn’t have the handling finesse for tight, twisty stuff.
If you have the skills, yes, you’d do it, but probably not in quite the style you’d like.
Sweet-spot pedalling helped by smart modes
The 10-51t gearing range is huge, but still I found myself succumbing to the temptation to stick to a few of the lower gears and default to switching between power modes.
It’s a habit that doesn’t get the most out of you or the motor, so I played with the onboard app and discovered it gives a readout for optimum cadence, turning green when you get it right.
That’s all to the good, though the weight means it’s not a bike you want to be caught out on without power. Moving between modes is quick and smooth, the motor picking up exactly where it needs to.
My only gripe is that when it tops out at 26km/h, the cut-off feels abrupt and the bike slows rapidly before kicking back to life. It’s not a seamless experience.
Accessories for the win
The mudguards have good clearance and keep off most of what gets thrown up, even from wet, muddy tracks.
In fact, I came to appreciate all the commuting-specific accessories more than I expected. A kickstand may not feel that exciting, but once I used this rather than propping the weighty ebike against a wall, I was converted.
The built-in lights are powered by the battery, so there’s no reason to get caught without working illumination. The sturdy rack will bear up to 25 kilos and is compatible with most panniers .
Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped bottom line
The Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped is an electric bike that makes you want to ride more – it allows you to take the more interesting routes less travelled on your commute and have fun on forest tracks at the weekend.
It would also be ideal for touring on long-distance tracks such as King Alfred’s Way in the south west of England, given its range, comfort and load capacity.
Embrace its niche and you’ll get the best out of this bike, and it could well get the best out of you as a rider – if you can afford it.

New Trek Powerfly FS 2021 – introducing Trek’s brand new tour-oriented allrounder with the new Bosch Performance CX motor
Trek have just released their Powerfly FS, a brand-new bike aimed at eBikers with a penchant for touring. With a 4th-generation Bosch Performance Line CX motor and 120/100 mm travel (f/r), the Powerfly FS was designed to suit a wide range of applications, from daily commutes to epic trail adventurers.
The Trek Powerfly has been an integral part of Trek’s eBike portfolio for several years now. The LT version (Long Travel) was replaced last year with the new Trek Rail , which already came with a 4th generation Bosch Performance Line CX motor. Tour-oriented eBikers, however, had to make due with the outdated FS version, which had 130 mm of travel and, unfortunately, still the old Bosch motor. With the new Powerfly FS 202, Trek are addressing the touring segment more specifically, while maintaining the Rail model as part of their trail-bike segment. The new Trek Powerfly FS 2021 starts at € 3,898 and is now available from your trusted Trek dealer.
New motor in a new frame
Hardcore Trek fans have a reason to celebrate. Finally, the Powerfly FS, which still had an old Bosch motor last year, is available with the latest 4th generation Performance CX drive. To make it compatible with the new motor, Trek redesigned the frame platform of the Powerfly FS 2021 from scratch. The engineers moved the shock behind the seat tube and adjusted the travel of the whole bike, with 120 mm at the front and 100 mm out back. The fully integrated 625Wh battery slides out of the frame sideways, without the need of tools. As its predecessor, the battery can be charged both on and off the bike and features a very clever carrying handle on the top of the housing.
From trail adventurers to everyday commuters – all spec options in detail
As mentioned before, the Powerfly FS 2021 was designed to be the true all-rounder in Trek’s eBike portfolio, which explains the five different spec options. Alongside three traditional, trail-compatible models, there are two more models, which go under the name of ‘Equipped’ and were designed to suit the needs of tourers and commuters alike. They come with a front and rear mudguard, a powerful lighting system, a kickstand and a pannier rack as standard. While the Trek Powerfly FS 4 features a Bosch Purion on-board computer, all high-spec models come with a Bosch-Kiox display or Bosch SmartphoneHub. As you’d expect from Trek, all models are available in a wide range of colours.
Trek Powerfly FS 4 500W/625W
The Trek Powerfly FS can be purchased either with a 500 Wh or slightly bigger 625 Wh Bosch PowerTube battery. The larger version can be retrofitted. The Trek Powerfly FS 4 625W will be available for € 4,190.

The geometry in detail
To cover the widest possible range of applications, Trek release the Powerfly FS in 5 different spec options and just as many frame sizes – XS to XL. While the smaller XS and S sizes come with 27.5″ wheels , all other sizes feature 29″ wheels. A quick glance at the geo tab suggests an upright and thus comfortable riding position, which offers the ideal conditions for long rides – the high front-end and the slack seat angle are mainly responsible for this.
Trek Powerfly FS – first impressions
At last, the people at Trek rolled up their sleeves and gifted us with a brand-new version of the Powerfly FS with the latest Bosch Performance Line CX motor, which was long overdue! It took a long time, but the wait was worth it, especially for ambitious tourers and everyday commuters. We are looking forward to testing the Trek Powerfly FS and let you know if the outdated Powerfly has found a worthy successor.

Product features
Removable integrated battery.
RIB is a one-piece battery and cover with a built-in handle that can easily be removed and re-installed in the frame with no tools and no hassle. It’s the most convenient way to remove your battery for transport, security, or just easier charging.
Bosch Performance Line CX motor
Bosch Performance Line CX sets the standard for eMTB performance with up to 85Nm of torque and an intelligent eMTB mode with Extended Boost that automatically adjusts the amount of assist based on the terrain.
Bosch LED Remote
The Bosch smart system LED remote lets you easily change assist modes, activate walk mode, or turn on optional lights. The bright LEDs are easy to see in any light, and show you your battery level and assist mode at a glance.
Bosch eBike Flow app
The new eBike Flow app turns your ride into a personalized experience. Use it to customize your motor's assist behavior, track your ride stats, and integrate your data with apps like Strava and Apple Health. There's even handy features like navigation and service reminders.
Will my bike have a curved top tube?
Smaller frames (S) have a top tube that dips down as it approaches the seat tube. This design makes for a lower standover height, which is good for shorter riders because it allows them to straddle their bike more easily. Larger frames (M and up) have a straight top tube because taller riders with longer legs typically don’t have the same issues with standover height.
Compliant with leading safety regulations
The e-systems on Trek and Electra e-bikes are third-party tested to meet the latest e-bike safety regulations, including the stringent UL 2849 certification — so all you have to worry about is where your e-bike will take you next.

Upgrade your pedals and love your bike more
Pedals are two of the five touchpoints that connect you with your bike, and even though this bike comes with a pair, upgrading to pedals that boost control and grip will greatly improve your ride. See the pedal guide and find the best pedals for your riding style. We recommend flat pedals for simple versatility.
Smart Wheel Size
The right wheel size paired with your frame size gives you the perfect combination of responsiveness and control.
Integrated speed sensor
You've got one less detail to sweat with the integrated speed sensor. The chainstay-mounted sensor stays protected while the custom hub-mounted magnet stays secure—no more error codes from mis-aligned sensors.
Rear kickstand mount
Chainstay mounts make it easy to install a rear kickstand that stays out of your way and supports bikes of all sizes. No more laying or leaning.
Rack mounts
Going for a long ride? Rack mounts make carrying accessories a breeze.

A premium "do anything" full suspension electric bike that's equipped to handle pavement, trails, light mountain terrain, rain, shine, day, or night conditions. Available in five frame sizes for optimal fit, the XS and S come with 27.5" wheels and the M, L, and XL come with 29" wheels. Sold through one of North America's largest network of dealers. Trek and Bosch provide excellent support and warranty.
Custom made extra-wide plastic fenders are durable and quiet, very capable in off-road conditions. A sleek and sturdy rear rack provides 25kg (55lbs) of cargo capacity with pannier hangers on both sides and a removable top platform for trunk bags. Puncture resistant tires also feature unique black reflective stripes that combine safety with aesthetics.
Downtube-integrated battery pack and mid-drive motor keep weight low and center. Trek designed a "RIB" battery casing includes a handle for safe removal and transport. The battery doesn't rattle, and it can be charged on or off the bike with the fast 4 amp charger. Peformance Line CX motor is the most powerful from Bosch, but lightweight with a magnesium casing.
Highly adjustable air suspension front and rear with 120mm and 100mm travel respectively. Boost hub spacing and thru-axles increase wheel strength. Extra large 203mm hydraulic disc brakes with heat sinks and alloy cores deliver incredible stopping power. The biggest trade-offs here include the high price, smartphone display (that some may not like), louder motor operation, and increased weight (due to the high capacity battery and accessories).
