APPLEGATE VALLEY WINE TRAIL WINERIES MAP

uncorked wine tour applegate valley

Fifty mere miles long, the Applegate Valley heads north from the California border, following the meandering and crystal clear Applegate River. Forested hillsides surround a valley that is fertile and temperate, hosting numerous fields of fragrant lavender, meticulous small family farms growing organic produce, and roaming herds of grass-fed cattle. Within this dynamic terrain is a special 275,000 acre wine appellation known as the Applegate Valley AVA.

Contained within the Rogue Valley AVA, which itself is part of the larger Southern Oregon AVA, the Applegate Valley AVA is represented by the Applegate Valley Vintner’s Association, a group of 19 unique wineries producing a diverse array of wines: high quality and hand-crafted wines that have made this one of the most interesting wine regions in the west.

Best Wineries in the Applegate Valley

You can find award-winning wines at every turn in Southern Oregon. We’ve already listed some of the best places to find them in the Rogue Valley , but what about our neighbors to the west in the Applegate Valley?

As a designated American Viticultural Area (AVA), the Applegate Valley also has some amazing vineyards and wineries — and they’re all just a short drive from our home base here in Jacksonville ! We’ll give you some of our best recommendations in this post.

Where Is Applegate Valley?

The Applegate Valley is located within the Applegate River Valley in Southern Oregon. The gorgeous Applegate River, which stretches about 50 miles long, starts around the northern California border and extends up to a point just south of Grants Pass. The Applegate Valley is just west of Medford and Jacksonville.

The Applegate River gives the Applegate Valley its fertile, temperate climate. These are the perfect conditions for raising grass-fed cattle and growing various types of organic produce, including grapes for wine! With such perfect conditions, it wasn’t long before the Applegate Valley became a sub-appellation of the Rogue Valley AVA, which itself is a part of the larger Southern Oregon AVA.

5 Best Wineries in Applegate Valley

The Applegate Valley AVA is held by the Applegate Valley Vintners’ Association, which consists of about 18 different wineries in the area. Each of these wineries brings its own unique flavors and specialties to the table. While we believe that you truly can’t go wrong finding a great vineyard or winery in the Applegate Valley, we’ve created a list of five of our most favorite below.

1. Cowhorn Vineyard & Garden

Cowhorn Vineyard & Garden is a certified Biodynamic vineyard and winery. This means that they grow grapes with farming methods that create healthy soil. This is done with a sustainable, holistic approach that improves ecological harmony and eliminates the use of chemical fertilizers. Not only is Cowhorn the only certified Biodynamic vineyard and winery in the Applegate Valley, but also one of the only certified Biodynamic vineyards and wineries in the United States.

Cowhorn’s specialties include Rhône-style wines like Syrah, Grenache, Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. These wines are produced with 100% estate-grown fruit and have received many accolades over the years, including impressive reviews from:

  • Antonio Galloni’s Vinous
  • Wine Enthusiast
  • Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
  • Wine & Spirits Year’s Best List
  • Six Nations Wine Challenge

Address: 1665 Eastside Rd, Jacksonville, OR 97530

2. Schmidt Family Vineyards

Schmidt Family Vineyards is a family-owned and -operated winery with roots in the Applegate Valley since 2000. They are best known for their Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. However, they also produce some lesser-known varietals — like Albarino, Tempranillo, Barbera, and Malbec — all with ties to different countries around the world.

Schmidt Family Vineyards’ wines have received many awards in well-known wine competitions, including (but not limited to):

  • San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
  • Denver International Wine Competition
  • International Women’s Wine Competition
  • Savor Northwest Wine Competition

The wine is top-notch at Schmidt Family Vineyards, and so are the food and entertainment! Pair your wine with a delicious wood-fired pizza and enjoy live music every Friday night.

Address: 330 Kubli Rd, Grants Pass, OR 97527

3. Dwell Wines

Dwell Wines was founded just a couple of years ago in 2019. Since then, they’ve produced some of the best Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris in the Applegate Valley and beyond. In fact, their Pinot Gris won the Oregon Wine Competition in 2021. Dwell’s mission is to “create moments of togetherness over good wine.”

Dwell grows their prized grape varietals in Kenyon Vineyard, a gorgeous area of land surrounded by the Siskiyou Mountains and calm waters of the Applegate River. The vineyard is able to be reserved for weddings and special events throughout the year.

Address: 7281 Williams Hwy, Grants Pass, OR 97527

4. Red Lily Vineyards

Red Lily Vineyards has been a family-owned and -operated winery in the Applegate Valley for over 20 years. Their winemaking philosophy is to “create wines that have a sense of place” by producing the highest quality wines possible that reflect the soil rich lands upon which their vines are planted. They stand by their sustainable practices, hand labor, and minimalist approach to fermentation and aging.

Red Lily Vineyards specializes in growing grape varietals historically associated with various regions in Spain. Their Tempranillo is their tried-and-true, but they’ve also planted several acres of Verdejo, Grenache, and Graciano.

Their winery also features a fantastic kitchen serving Spanish-style favorites like tapas and bruschetta. But you’re more than welcome to bring your own food as well!

Address: 11777 Highway 238, Jacksonville, OR

5. Wooldridge Creek Winery

Wooldridge Creek Winery has been growing grape vines and producing amazing wines since the 1970s. Over the years, they’ve expanded their vineyards to include twelve varieties. They operate under sustainable practices and a commitment to preserving and protecting the soil, forest, and watershed. In fact, they’ve maintained certifications from various environmental programs for over a decade, including:

  • Salmon Safe
  • Low-Input Viticulture and Enology (LIVE)
  • Pacific Power’s Blue Sky Renewable Energy Program
  • Local watershed protection associations

The best part? Wooldridge Creek Winery isn’t just a winery. In 2015, it also became a creamery, offering organic, locally sourced cheeses and charcuterie items! This made it the first joint winery-creamery in Oregon. Since then, they’ve been named one of the Most Unique Wine Experiences in Southern Oregon by USA Today’s 10Best.

Address: 818 Slagle Creek Rd, Grants Pass, OR 97527

  • Let’s go to Central Point’s Artisan Corridor – really 4 stops in one! Picture the worlds most amazing grilled cheese sandwich from Rogue Creamery paired with one-of-a-kind artisan chocolates from Lillie Belle Farms and something sweet and savory fresh from the oven at Croquette Bakery. Then, bring all your goodies to The Rogue Grape where you can sample wines spanning the Rogue Valley to find the perfect pairings – all in one place.
  • Dancin Vineyards. A cozy atmosphere with spectacular views. Dan and Cindy(Dan+Cin) maintain their 100% burgundy clones with the utmost care to produce absolutely top notch fruit and superb wines. All of their wines are fermented spontaneously using yeast cultures native to the vineyard. Dan believes that ‘Great wine starts in the vineyard’. The food here is also phenomenal, prepared in a state of the art facility featuring Dan’s real wood fired pizza oven.  * On Sundays, Dan invites guests on a personalized tour of his vineyard and wine making facility, a real insider treat! This is a unique opportunity to see how it all happens- fun and educational! **If you are interested in taking this tour, let us know in advance so we can be sure to save you a spot.
  • Woolridge Creek Winery . Sip and dine luxuriously among the barrels in part of the actual production facility of the winey, you get to be close to the action! And with 80+ year old goblet trained cab vines close at hand you’ll know that you are tasting deep into history. With their on-site creamery and charcuterie, this is also an excellent spot to dine. You’re sure to find a pairing made in heaven!
  • Quadi North. Second gen winemaker of Napa extraction, Herve Quadi, manages his vineyard sites to expose their specific terroirs- Syrah, Cabernet Franc, GSM, Marsanne/Roussanne are in the top tier in the valley in a winemaking venue attached to the production area – there’s always some action going on! Their friendly staff leaves no leaf unturned when showcasing their product – sure to supply ample satisfaction!
  • Weisinger Family Winery . Ashland’s boutique winery and custom crush facility. Home to perhaps some of the oldest vines in the Bear Creek valley with their Riesling planted in the mid ‘70s. Steeped in a family winemaking tradition, second generation winemaker Eric Weisinger is the region’s foremost vigneron. Eric studied winemaking in New Zealand, and has the unique ability to create wines the represent the incredible bio-diversity of the Bear Creek region- From Riesling’s and Gewürtstraminer’s bright, lean notes, reminiscent of Alsatian style wines, to the high-heat Spanish, Bordeaux and Rhone style wines that well represent their terroirs. Since he does not distribute his wines much farther than his own zip code, this is an especial treat for anyone visiting from out of town.
  • Paschal Vineyard and Winery. Nestled in the pear orchards is a winery which surpasses all the rest in terms of the depth and richness of their wines. Rene the German wine-maker, is fastidious and attentive. He often joins guests in the tasting room to regale them with the story of his wines. Roy Paschal, the founder of the winery can be seen out in the vineyard on any given day, driving the tractor, pruning, quality testing, even harvesting. The owners involvement in the process from the ground up lends itself to the quality of the wines and the experience.
  • Irvine and Roberts Vineyard. Did somebody say pinot noir? The altitude and the cool evening winds at the head of the valley make for hardy vines and exceptional fruit. Would class wines and hospitality, coupled with their culinary pairings and the view from their tasting room veranda is unmatched.
  • Red Lily vineyard.  Talk about atmosphere. This place has it all! A sumptuous, vaulted tasting room, opening up to an expansive lawn that leads right down to the Applegate River. You can literally soak your feet while you sip! Tempranillo is the name of the game here, with lots of variations and styles arrayed in a single flight.
  • Belle Fiore Winery. Here wine and architecture are one and the same. Built in the classical Italian style with its vaulted ceilings and garnish veranda, Belle Fiore boasts one of the regions most palatial tasting rooms. This enhances rather than distracts from their great wines. Winemaker Rob Folin is among the best in his ability to showcase the site’s terroir in every glass!

These are just a few to chose from among a huge selection of wineries within the Rogue Valley AVA. These can range from the rustic, ‘down on the farm’ Devitt Winery , specializing in long barrel aging, to Valley View , named after Oregons oldest winery(with the ambiance to match!), to the fabulous and ever popular Troon Vineyard Oregon’s only Demeter Biodynamic® Regenerative Organic Gold Certified® farm and a Wine Enthusiast nominee for American Winery of the Year 2022. Or even the appointment-only Cowhorn , the region’s first Biodynamic vineyard project.

With over 90 wineries to choose from we will be sure to find the right place for you.  It’s your day, we just want to make sure you come away with an enriching experience you’ll never forget.  Our tours have a conversational aire, so no itinerary is set in stone. Just let us know how we can best serve your individual needs. The main thing for us is to deliver a great tour that far exceeds your expectations!

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Visiting Moscow? Get yourself a metro card and explore Moscow’s beautiful metro stations. Moscow’s world-famous metro system is efficient and a great way to get from A to B. But there is more to it; Soviet mosaic decorations, exuberant halls with chandeliers, colourful paintings and immense statues. Moscow’s metro is an attraction itself, so take half a day and dive into Moscow’s underground!

The best thing to do is to get on the brown circle (number 5) line since the most beautiful metro stations are situated on this line. The only exception is the metro stop Mayakovskaya one the green line (number 2). My suggestion is to get a map, mark these metro stops on there and hop on the metro. It helps to get an English > Russian map to better understand the names of the stops. At some of the metro stops, the microphone voice speaks Russian and English so it’s not difficult at all.

Another thing we found out, is that it’s worth taking the escalator and explore the other corridors to discover how beautiful the full station is.

Quick hotel suggestion for Moscow is the amazing Brick Design Hotel .

These are my favourite metro stations in Moscow, in order of my personal preference:

1. Mayakovskaya Station

The metro station of Mayakovskaya looks like a ballroom! Wide arches, huge domes with lamps and mosaic works make your exit of the metro overwhelming. Look up and you will see the many colourful mosaics with typical Soviet pictures. Mayakovskaya is my personal favourite and is the only stop not on the brown line but on the green line.

2. Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya metro station is famous for its yellow ceiling. An average museum is nothing compared to this stop. Splendour all over the place, black and gold, mosaic – again – and enormous chandeliers that made my lamp at home look like a toy.

3. Novoslobodskaya Station

The pillars in the main hall of Novoslobodskaya metro station have the most colourful stained glass decorations. The golden arches and the golden mosaic with a naked lady holding a baby in front of the Soviet hammer and sickle, make the drama complete.

4. Prospect Mira Station

The beautiful chandeliers and the lines in the ceiling, make Prospekt Mira an architectural masterpiece.

5. Belorusskaya Station

Prestigious arches, octagonal shapes of Socialistic Soviet Republic mosaics. The eyecatcher of Belorusskaya metro station, however, is the enormous statue of three men with long coats, holding guns and a flag.

6. Kiyevskaya Station

The metro station of Kiyevskaya is a bit more romantic than Belorusskaya and Prospect Mira. Beautiful paintings with classical decorations.

7. Taganskaya Station

At the main hall Taganskaya metro station you will find triangle light blue and white decorations that are an ode to various Russians that – I assume – are important for Russian history and victory. There is no need to explore others halls of Taganskaya, this is it.

8. Paveletskaya Station

Another and most definitely the less beautiful outrageous huge golden mosaic covers one of the walls of Paveletskaya. I would recommend taking the escalator to the exit upstairs to admire the turquoise dome and a painting of the St Basil’s Cathedral in a wooden frame.

It’s absolutely beautiful! Moscow is a great city trip destination and really surprised me in many ways.

My partner and I did a self guided Moscow Metro tour when we were there 2 years ago. So many breathtaking platforms…I highly recommend it! Most of my favorites were along the Brown 5 line, as well. I also loved Mayakovskaya, Arbatskaya, Aleksandrovski Sad and Ploshchad Revolyutsii. We’re heading back in a few weeks and plan to do Metro Tour-Part 2. We hope to see the #5 stations we missed before, as well as explore some of the Dark Blue #3 (Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bul’var, for sure), Yellow #8 and Olive #10 platforms.

That’s exciting Julia! Curious to see your Metro Tour-Part 2 experience and the stations you discovered.
