My sister booked a private brewery tour for my bachelorette party and this was the perfect way to celebrate. Our guide Cam picked us up at our Airbnb in a large white van that had plenty of room for our group of 11. The plan was to go to 3 breweries with a dinner scheduled at the 2nd. During the drive Cam kept things lively with his jokes and stories. He also had us tell him about our beer preferences so he could customize the drinks throughout the night to our tastes. At our first stop (Electric Bicycle), Cam gave us a tour of the brewery before getting us set up with flights of four beer samples. He also passed around a menu for us to pre-order our dinners. Next we headed to Big Rock where we had another flight ready to go on our table. Dinner came out pretty shortly and we had plenty of time to eat everything. Our final stop of the night was Luppolo. By this point I was feeling pretty tipsy and didn't manage to finish my drinks before it was time to go (but I did sample it all and they were great!) Cam kept reminding us "Don't be a hero". The only tip I would give is that this isn't a great option for anyone gluten-free. It costs an extra $20 per person for cider and some of the breweries only had one option for them. Overall I had a great time on this tour and would highly recommend it for a special event.

SO much more fun than I had expected, and that's only because I wasn't sure what to expect from a van tour. Every other beer tour we've done (and we've done a ton) was walking, so adding a van into the mix - being trapped with a dozen other strangers for the course of three hours - was slightly daunting. We're social (I am, at least), but I never like feeling forced into it. I know that makes me sound terrible, but it's the truth. At any rate, any fears we might have shared about the van were quickly swept away by our awesome guide Dave, and the people on the tour. I won't lie and say we were swapping phone numbers and e-mail addresses by the end of the night, but I will tell you that we shared some crazy good stories and a ton of laughs along the way! The meeting point was at Waterfront Station, and it was easy enough to find Dave at the appointed time. He got us checked in right away, chatted with us a bit, then let us wander while we waited for everybody to show up. Once we were all there, he gathered us into a group and walked us up the block to get to the van. We were full up, but he managed to reign in the chatter and get us comfortable before we hit our first stop. Our tour that night consisted of Main Street Brewery, Postmark Brewery and Steel Toad Brewery. The longest tour was at the first stop, Main Street. We did the obligatory behind-the-scenes walk, where the rig is displayed and explained, the brew-making process is detailed, and containers of hops and barley are passed around for sniffing and consuming. By the time we were led back to the front of the brewery for our tasting, I was excited. I really wanted to try Vancouver beer! Dave had done such a great job talking up the craft brew scene, and here we were, about to try our first Vancouver craft beers. I was, sadly, underwhelmed. I didn't really like any of the beers in the flight (which consisted of a Pilsner, Saison, IPA and Brown), which left me feeling deflated. I was surprised that I wasn't blown away by the saison or the brown, but neither of them were my favorite. Moving along, Dave got us bundled back into the van and headed towards Postmark, which had a really fun, loud vibe to the place. We got another (shorter) tour of the workings at Postmark before heading to our table for our flight there (a winter wheat, a raspberry lambic, their stout and their IPA). The beer here was much better than at Main Street, at least. I really enjoyed the stout and the winter wheat. The lambic was actually much more tame than I expected it to be, but the IPA about took my head off. It wasn't as strong as the IPAs in San Diego, but after the others in the flight, it was too much for me. Before we knew it, Dave was giving us the 5 minute warning, and then hustling us back into the van for the trip to the final stop of the night. Had we had the time during our brief trip to Vancouver, we definitely would've gone back to Postmark on our own. Steel Toad was the only place at which we did not get a flight. I'm actually quite saddened by that, though Dave did put it up for a vote. Anybody who wanted a flight could've gotten one, but I was feeling pressured and went along with everyone else, who got a pint of one beer only. I got their Oatmeal stout, and it was very good. Dark and rich, not too overpowering or thick. It really was a good beer on which to end the night. Dave, through this all, was engaging and friendly, answering questions, providing trivia, giving his opinions on Vancouver's beer scene, and making us feel comfortable. He was great at corralling the group and keeping us on time, and providing little bits of trivia about the areas we visited and drove through (he even pointed out some landmarks from the "Deadpool" movie!) The night ended with a smaller group of us piling into the van and heading back to our meeting point (half of the group decided to stick around Steel Toad). My lasting impression of the night is that a) Dave has the patience of a saint, if he has to deal with a van full of drunkards on a nightly basis; 2) Dave could collect anecdotes from his tours and compile them into a book; and iii) I'd recommend this tour to any beer lover visiting Vancouver.

On a quick Dad and daughter trip, booked the classic tour. Dad is 72 and loves beer. The tour guys were knowledgeable and friendly. The tour for the day was 3 stops at personality brew houses. Good bang for the buck. The fellow tourists were a fun mix of locals and out of town era. Tips on best food places was a bonus "best bets of the beaten path" value add. Recommend for all levels of beer aficionados. There is something for everyone.

Jamie was a hell of a guide! Super friendly, super knowledgeable, perfect guide for our 3-hour tour of Main Street Brewing, Off the Rail, and Strange Fellows (the group's collective favorite). Absolutely worth the trip for craft beer snobs and newbies alike. A highlight of my week in Vancity.

My husband and I have been on beer tours around the world. Belgium, Hawaii, been there, drank that. So when we traveled to Vancouver, we couldn't pass this up. We did it and I'm here to say... This tour is legit! Our tour consisted of Bomber Brewing, Main Street Brewing, and Storm Brewing. We got a quick tour at each location and about 5 or 6 samples. We also had the option to purchase food or additional drinks. My husband picked up a growler at each location to commemorate this awesome tour with. From start to finish, it was amazing. Our tour guide was superb and even recommended other breweries to stop at during the rest of our trip. The van was very comfortable and clean. I love that the breweries rotate. We actually thought of signing up for another beer tour the next day because they were different breweries! I think we will do this tour every time we visit Vancouver. I mean, getting shuttled around from brewery to brewery. It would be silly not to! Vancouver Brewery Tours also does private tours if you wanted to book one for a bachelor party or birthday party. That sounds freaking awesome! I'd move to Vancouver alone for that perk. The tour also came with free drink tickets at Rouge and a cool Vancouver Brewery Tours beer glass. I would highly recommend this tour to all my fellow beer lovers all over the world!

Perfect for my 40th! It wasn't even my idea, my wife was actually enabling me to booze up and it was awesome. Got together a few friends that enjoy drinking, loaded up the van and it was a really good tour learning so much stuff and then drinking it all away. Everyone had a great time, Ryan, the owner, was a top notch guide and made sure we were well entertained and safe. It's not cheap but perfect for a milestone type celebration with good friends. It was a fantastic experience and would look forward to another opportunity.

My friend and I had a fabulous time on the Vancouver Brewery Tours. Meet in front of Rogue in the Waterfront Station, which doesn't have a bathroom fyi but you can probably sneak in Rogue if you need to go, it was easy to find the group. The passager van was equipt with growler holders incase you made any purchases and they were very accomindating of tempature request. We started out at DeepCove Brews and Distrillers. They went over the beer brewing process as well as a little of the distilling process. It was really cool to see a brewery and distillery and how they can work together. The Green Tea Sasion Beer here was amazing one of the top beers of the trip! From there we headed over to Storm Brewing. Not a pretty but it was awesome to hear the history of this brewry and the owner. Super cool how most of the stuff was recycled. Loved the Cinnmon Bun Beer sound weird but tasted great. We ended at Postmark Brewing, super nice facility great beers. After the tours were over you end back at Rogue where you get a free drink. Our whole tour grabed a table to gether and got a little bit to eat. If you like craft beer this is a great way to get out of downtown and try a varity of different beers there was definatly something for everyone.

Our tour with VBTs was great- super fun, well timed, and of course, beer! Our guide, Rachel, was fabulous. The breweries were fun, a great selection if places with Brassneck, Storm and Bomber. In addition to having a great time, I forgot my wallet in the bus and Rachel went out of her way to make sure I could get it back! Pretty important since it was New Year's Eve. Big thumbs up- I'll do the tour again for sure! Thank you!

I was given a gift certificate to this for my birthday. I wasn't that excited about it because I had been to 2/3 breweries that we were going to visit but it turned out to be really great. Our tour guide, Ryan, was also the owner and you could tell he was passionate about beer and he was incredibly knowledgable. He did a great job of getting everyone to interact with one another and overall it was a great afternoon!

Got out for a tour today with Vancouver Brewery Tours. We hit Brassneck, Strange Fellows and Storm. We met at Waterfront station which was very convenient having taken the Skytrain in to town. Our tour guide Rachel met us and the rest of the attendees and away we went. Along the way she gave us a history of BC craft beer and I learned a bunch of things I did not know before and I'm a local beer geek! At the first two breweries we got a tour, we talked about the process of beer making and Rachel answered everyone's questions with her wealth of knowledge in the brewing industry. We then arrived at a reserved space to out awaiting flights of beer. The conversations with the "out of towners" was great and the quality of all the beers was top notch. I would highly recommend this tour to visitors and locals alike! In fact with multiple breweries on the tour I would definitely go again! Cheers!

Chad was such a pleasure to send the afternoon with! You came away feeling like you had made a new friend! I don’t usually drink beer however he was able to find some options for me that I truly enjoyed Spend the day with Chad on his beer tour in Vancouver and you will not regret ❤️

Cindy Delaney Avatar

Chad was an excellent host on this craft beer tour, full of knowledge and I enjoyed hanging out and tasting new beers. Chad selects beers according to what each person prefers but also wants you to expand your tastes and try some new ones. I would definitely do this again!

Chad was amazing, this was our first time coming to Vancouver and wanted to check out some of the local breweries. He was awesome, very knowledgeable and an over all great tour guide. 10/10 will be doing it again when we come back to the city.

Michaela Woodrow Avatar

Led by a great host, Chad, who tailored the drinks to suit the group. Excellent brewery selection and tasty and interesting beers!

Oliver Cross Avatar

Had a great time touring some of Vancouver’s breweries! My brother and I ended up being the only two people on our tour due to some rescheduling and Chad kept us interested and engaged the entire time with history on how beer is brewed and the history of Vancouver. Super laid back, informative and even gave us great suggestions on other places to go out while we were visiting. Will definitely book again!

Arianna Milton Avatar

I surprised my husband with a beer tour for his birthday, and it was an absolute blast! Chad took us to amazing local spots, showcasing the vibrant beer culture of the area. Despite not being a beer lover, I was surprised to discover flavours that I genuinely enjoyed. Chad made the experience educational and fun and shared some history about Vancouver which I loved. I highly recommend this beer tour for a memorable and enjoyable time.

Harveey Dulay Avatar

Chad was an amazing host and gave a great tour of Vancouver’s amazing beer scene, while also educating us on the history of the places we visited. This was my first beer tour and it definitely set the standard.

Cristian Mendoza Avatar

This was the best brewery tour I've done in any city, Chad was incredibly welcoming and friendly and everyone on the tour had a great time, he really helped make it a fun experience.

Eren Roubal Avatar

We did a brewery tour with Chad for my friends bachelorette party. Chad was very knowledgeable about the area and the beer/brewing process. The girls and I had a great time and we did not feel rushed at each stop as I have felt in the past with other tours. He was very communicative and quick to respond to my countless emails before booking as we had a large group, multiple dietary restrictions and some who were not beer drinkers on the tour. I would recommend Vancouver Local Adventures to anyone looking for a tour in Vancouver!

lindsay hazell Avatar

Was expecting good, got great. Having been to these breweries before, I was pleasantly surprised at the added value not just in knowledge but experience. Chad has designed an excellent tour: from the stories around brewery creek and the rise of North American Craft Beer, to the selection on flights, to the handoffs to other experts, and of course his own personal flair as a host. Can't recommend enough!

Nick Warriner Avatar

Outstanding afternoon spent with Chad learning all about the awesome, and delicious, brewery world of Vancouver. An excellent combo of sincere enthusiam, deep knowledge, and celebration of local business. Highly recommended.

Jon Schmiemann Avatar

Did a brewery tour for one of our friends birthdays. Chad took us around Mount Pleasant to three breweries we knew nothing about, urging us to step out of our comfort zones and to try some beers we wouldn't of otherwise tasted. Learned a little history about beer as a whole, as well as all the breweries we went to. Chad was wonderful: personable and passionate for his profession, he was just who we were looking for for this type of tour. 10/10.

Sam Beeksma Avatar

We did a brewery tour with some friend visiting from out of town. It was a really cool experience that I recommend to both tourists and Vancouverite. Our guide was knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the craft beer scene as well as Vancouver in general. I discovered some new places that I will definitely visit again! Thanks Chad!

Charles Rech Avatar

I had a wonderful time on the brewery creek tour! We visited 3 breweries, including a behind the scenes tour in one of them. Chad was knowledgeable, passionate and made sure everyone was getting the most out of the experience. The tour really opened my mind about trying new styles of beer instead of my usual go-tos. In between breweries, we walked past the beautiful murals of the Mount Pleasant area and got to hear about the history behind them. I would definitely recommend this tour!

Eliana Goldner Avatar

Such a step up from your average beer tour! Our guide was knowledgeable and attentive. I learned so much, not just about craft beer and the brewing process, but also really cool nuggets of Vancouver history. The choice of beers was diverse, but consistent in quality. Introduced me to a few new favourite brews. And getting to go “backstage” to see the brewing and bottling process was such a treat! Highly recommended for Vancouver locals and visitors alike, who are looking for a super fun and educational tour.

Shawn Berke Avatar

We did the Brewery Creek Craft Beer Tour. We visited 3 breweries with a taster flight in each of them. Chad will use the groups feedback to tailor the next flight to our tastes while challenging you to try new styles. It was a great way to learn more about the area and widen my understanding about beer. I really enjoyed the experience!

Walther Maciel Avatar

What an amazing tour! I didn't even know those breweries exsisted there. Neither did my friend, and we both live in Vancouver for a while. Lol. Thank you for opening our eyes Chad. Beer wise, just wonderful. I was always against the sours' or ipa' s until this tour. The people working at the breweries are also very nice and proud to show their facilities and best beers to Chad's guests. This was a great experience and definitely a must do with out of town friends, or just for fun.

Xavier Valverde Avatar

We went on a brewery tour with Chad for my bachelorette. Chad has great insight into both the industry and the surrounding culture to add content to the tour (not just drinking beers). We had a group of 15, most beer drinkers but a few non beer drinkers. Chad made sure those not drinking flights found something they liked and were taken care of at each stop. Would highly recommend Chad at Vancouver Local Adventures for any celebration or a fun weekend outing with friends. Big or small groups, you'll have a good time 🙂

If you’re looking for a tour that actually teaches you about the history of craft beer culture and takes you behind the scenes to learn about how craft beer is made across some really cool unique breweries in Vancouver, this one is for you! We had a fantastic time exploring with our wonderful guide Chad. His local knowledge, and relationships with the breweries provides an exclusive experience where you get special access to see how beer is made - I now understand what components make a beer and why Hops are so important! While I normally prefer wine or cider, this tour helped expand my pallet for craft beer, learning about the origins of cask beer, and solidifying my love of sours! I also wouldn’t have found these cool breweries on my own. Love that the tour is walkable as well. Highly recommend!!

Melanie Yusuf Avatar

It was a really amazing experience! Chad is so profesional and really enthusiastic, he was able to transfer us his passion for the beer and it's production. Thank you Chad for everything, we will do this again when friends come to visit!

So much fun!... The 3 breweries we visited were very unique and our tour guide, Chad, had an Awesome selection of craft beers chosen for us to try. Getting to see inside the actual brewery and learn about the process only enhanced the experience even more. The walk between pubs was fun as our guide showed us some amazing street art and talked about its history with the city. Good times, great beer, best guide!

I took my father on the "craft brewery revolution" tour. He and i had never been on a brewery tour before and i was very impressed. I knew there was going to be some very interesting beers that would be sampled. But what i wasnt expecting was a detailed break down on the types of beers, how their brewed, what the differences are. Even talked about the histroy of each brewery and the significance of the current craft beer scene. We were also shown the back of a brewery and got to see the process. The host was charismatic and funny, very charming and did not rush us at all. He made everyone on the tour feel very welcome. For a first time tour i would highly recommend. Very fun way to spend an evening.

Amazing beer tour! I really enjoyed learning about the breweries and the neighborhood all while enjoying some great beer. Even as someone who lives in the area, I got so much out of the tour. Our tour guide was great, and knew a ton about the breweries and their different beer. I would definitely suggest the tour for anyone who likes beer!

This Brewery Creek Tour was super fun! We did it for a friends birthday and even though everyone on the tour lives in or is from Vancouver we all learned so much. Thanks for the great tour!

Craft Beer Vancouver: 20 Best Vancouver Craft Breweries

The last decade has seen the Vancouver craft beer scene absolutely explode in popularity.

The city is now home to dozens of locally owned breweries that are keen to experiment with hops, flavour, and style in a way that is sure to shatter people’s preconceived notions of what beer can be.

To guide you through this labyrinth of lager, I’ve come up with a list of the 20 best spots to partake in some of the city’s most celebrated libations.

So, let’s put away those car keys and get started.

  • Brewery Creek
  • East Vancouver
  • North Vancouver
  • Brewery Tours

Craft Beer Vancouver

Vancouver is a world-class cosmopolitan city nestled between the Salish Sea and the North Shore Mountains on Canada’s West Coast. While traditionally renowned for its natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities, the city is increasingly gaining plaudits for its distinctive culinary offerings and exploding craft beer scene.

As with the city’s cosmopolitan nature, it’s the scene’s diversity that is its strength. From small family-run start-up breweries to massive brewpubs with dozens of taps, there is no shortage of options for beer lovers involved in the eternal search for the perfect pint.

Vancouver Craft Beer Map

Most of Vancouver’s breweries can be found in the working-class neighbourhood of East Vancouver, a short distance from downtown. The area is home to two main brewery districts, Brewery Creek and Yeast Van . This is where we’ll spend the bulk of our time on our Vancouver craft crawl.

However, those who intend to cross Burrard Inlet to the suburb of North Vancouver will also find around a dozen upstart brewers located in or near the brand-new Shipyards Brewery District .

If you’re travelling further afield to the Eastern suburbs of Port Moody, New Westminster and the Fraser Valley, there are many more award-winning breweries. However, due to their relative inaccessibility for most travellers and Vancouverites alike, we won’t discuss these areas in any detail.

So now that we’ve gotten oriented, it’s time to get started.

After years of painstaking research in Vancouver’s bars and on the city’s best beaches I’ve come up with a list of my favourite Vancouver brewpubs and breweries . They’ve been placed on the map above so you can embark on your own self-guided Vancouver craft beer.

Or even better, later on, you’ll be provided with the option to take a guided behind-the-scenes tour of some of the city’s best breweries . Taste the very best our city has to offer with a passionate local guide and a group of like-minded travellers from all over the world.

The choice is entirely up to you!

Vancouver Brewpubs

Most of Vancouver’s independent brewers are located quite a distance from the city’s downtown core. This makes them somewhat inaccessible from most downtown hotels or hostels for travellers not fortunate enough to possess a designated driver.

Luckily, Vancouver is also home to a variety of brewpubs that’ll allow you to sample the very best of our craft beer scene without travelling to the outer reaches of the city.

The exterior of Craft Beer Market, Olympic Village

Craft Beer Market Vancouver

$$| Area:  Olympic Village| 85 W 1st Ave. | Website

In spite of its name, Craft Beer Market is actually a massive brewpub and restaurant set in Olympic Village’s historic Salt Building. If you’re looking for a wide cross-section of BC’s craft brewing scene, there is simply no better place to come.

Craft is home to the largest selection of draft beer in Canada . They have over one hundred taps sourced from brewers from down the street and around the globe.

While the restaurant’s cavernous setting can feel somewhat impersonal, if you’re simply looking to scratch an afternoon itch for a couple of cold ones this is just the spot to do it.

Big on beer? Check out the best brewery tours in Vancouver .

Beer at the Alibi Room, Vancouver

$$| Area:  Gastown| 157 Alexander St. | Website

This self-anointed “modern tavern” is located in a lovely heritage building in Vancouver’s most historic neighbourhood. This makes it a perfect place to stop for a couple of pints after an afternoon spent exploring Gastown or Chinatown .

The Alibi Room is home to over 50 taps of local and imported craft beer, so you won’t be lacking in choice. Toss in a creative cocktail list and the understated sophistication of their comfort-food-heavy menu and you’ve got a true winner.

If you’re anything like me and you prefer to avoid the usual soulless corporate-monstrosity brewpub environment, then the Alibi Room should be right up your alley.

Heading out for drinks in Gastown? Check out our article on The Best Bars in Gastown .

A man holds up a stout at Brewhall, Olympic Village

$$| Area:  Olympic Village| 97 E 2nd Ave. | Website

Brewhall is Vancouver’s first German-style beer hall and craft brewery concept venue. It aims to promote community gatherings with freshly brewed beer, good eats and an exciting collection of arcades and board games.

There are 22 local taps available , 8 of which are brewed on-site. They even have an upstairs whiskey bar called DRINKLAB, which contains over 50 types of spirits from the world over.

A perfect spot to start your Brewery Creek tour if you’re walking from the Olympic Village or Main Street Skytrain station.

A flight of beers from Stanley Park Brewing

Stanley Park Brewing

$$| Area:  West End| 8901 Stanley Park Dr. | Website

One of the newest additions to Vancouver’s brewpub scene, this aptly named venue is located smack dab in the middle of the best urban park in the world , Stanley Park .

The beer list is comprised of 8 core taps that are complemented by a large collection of rotators. Each option is considered a tasty tribute to the beautiful surroundings, with names like the Sunsetter wheat ale, Windstorm Pale Ale and trail hopper IPA.

If you’re visiting Vancouver’s number one attraction, stop in for a pint on their beautiful patio. Your worries are guaranteed to float away in the cool ocean breeze.

The exterior of Tap and Barrel Shipyards

Tap & Barrel

$$| Area:  Coal Harbour /N. Van/Olympic Village| 76-1055 Canada Pl. | Website

This local chain has three vibrant waterfront locations , all of which are renowned for their incredible views. In fact, they may all very well be in direct competition for the title of best patio in Vancouver.

Tap and Barrel’s innovative on-tap beverage program features dozens of BC craft beers, wines, and ciders, many of which are exclusive to their locations. This makes it a perfect spot to sample the very best of what BC has to offer.

The patio at Yaletown Brewing Company

Yaletown Brewing Company

$$| Area:  Yaletown| 1111 Mainland St. | Website

Yaletown is a trendy and upscale downtown neighbourhood located a short walk from the Stadium District and the Seawall . While it’s mostly known for its chic restaurants and lounges, that doesn’t mean you still can’t find yourself a good pint.

Yaletown Brewing has been brewing delicious craft beer in this gentrified former warehouse district since way back in 1994. During that time, it has won the prestigious title of best brewpub in Canada several times while still maintaining that neighbourhood pub feel.

I like to come here during happy hour to grab a pint of one of their refreshing house-made beers and watch the world go by on their enormous patio. But if you’re looking you’re looking to kick it up a notch, you can also find an almost club-like atmosphere later on with DJs, bouncers and even a small dance floor.

Vancouver Brewery Creek Breweries

If you want to go straight to the source of some of North America’s finest craft beer , this is a good place to start. Brewery Creek is located just across False Creek from Downtown Vancouver, making it the most accessible of Vancouver’s famed craft beer neighbourhoods.

Most of the breweries are about a 10-15 minute walk from the Canada Line’s Olympic Village and Broadway-City Hall Skytrain stations or the Expo Line’s Main Street-Science World Station.

For a more interesting commute, you can also walk or bike around the legendary Seawall or take the Aquabus Ferry to Olympic Village.

4 Tall cans from Granville Island Brewing

Granville Island Brewing

1441 Cartwright St. |(604) 687-2739| Website

VP Favourite:  English Bay Pale Ale (5% ABV, 18 IBU)

While not technically located in Brewery Creek, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the oldest microbrewery in Canada . Located right in the heart of Granville Island ,  GI Brewing has been making delicious, locally crafted beer since 1984.

They may not be quite as adventurous as many of their young upstart competitors; however, Granville Island has a special place in the hearts of local craft beer lovers who spent years bereft of premium local options.

So pop in after exploring the market, or use the Aquabus to make it the first stop on your Brewery Creek crawl. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

VP Favourite:  33 Acres of Sunshine (5% ABV, 14 IBU)

This chic minimalist brewery takes an austere approach to décor and packaging with a simplistic white aesthetic found throughout. Imagine an alternate universe where Steve Jobs had opened a brewery.

However, their branding stands in stark contrast to their bold and innovative brews .

Picking a favourite may be the toughest part, as I’ve yet to be disappointed. Nevertheless, their seasonal flagship, 33 acres of sunshine, is the ultimate French blanche. Silky smooth and sub-spiced with orange peel, coriander and anise seed, it’s the perfect beer for a day on a Vancouver beach .

The chalkboard at Brassneck Brewery, Vancouver

Brassneck Brewery

2148 Main St. |(604) 259-7686| Website

VP Favourite:  Passive Aggressive IPA (7% ABV, 75 IBU)

This small Main Street brewery was founded with the goal of keeping things simple and not taking things too seriously.

The result of this philosophy is a tasting room that features a mixture of “ dangerously drinkable ” classics and nano-sized experiments of lesser-known beers from all over the globe.

The brewery’s unique brewery lounge license and rotating cast of food trucks stationed outside give Brassneck a more casual atmosphere than many of its competitors.

A bunch of growlers sit on the bar at R & B Brewing, Vancouver

R&B Ale & Pizza House

1-54 E 4th Ave. |(604) 336-0275| Website

VP Favourite: Raven Cream Ale (4.8% ABV, 18 IBU)

These Brewery Creek veterans have been making easy-drinking hand-crafted ales and lagers since 1997.

You simply can’t go wrong with any of their three refreshing IPAs. However, for my money, the award-winning raven cream ale is the true showstopper. Surprisingly light-bodied, this cream ale has subtle nutty flavours that are perfectly complemented by hints of chocolate.

Enjoy it in a casual 70’s style tasting room that features eclectic music, an old-school stereo system and quirky décor. Furthermore, they’ve got a large (by brewery standards) menu that is heavy on their famous artisan pizzas .

Pizza and beer. How can you go wrong?

The tasting room at Main Street Brewing, Vancouver

Main Street Brewing

261 E 7th Ave. |(604) 336-7711| Website

VP Favourite:  Main Street Pilsner (5% ABV, 22 IBU)

This Main Street favourite is located in the historic former home of Vancouver Brewing , which dates back to 1913. In the late 19th century, many breweries set up shop in the area using Brewery Creek as a water supply. So it’s far from just a clever name.

Head brewer Jack Bensley looks to carry on this tradition with his five core brands (pilsner, pale ale, IPA, saison and brown ale). Toss in some interesting seasonals and a variety of cask ales, and you’re spoilt for choice.

The quaint tasting room feels very much a part of the brewery itself, with the aroma of spent hops permeating throughout. At the same time, the exposed brick and large murals remind you of the building’s heritage status. Tacos and charcuterie plates are available, so bring your appetite.

4 tall cans sit on the bar at Faculty Brewing, Vancouver

Faculty Brewing Company

1830 Ontario St. |(778) 819-6794| Website

VP Favourite:  802 Tripel (7.6% ABV, 43 IBU)

Tucked away on Ontario Street between 2nd and 3rd, this small brewery aims to simplify the ordering system. Their innovative university-like branding system allots each beer a number that signifies its complexity.

For instance, easy-drinking lagers and pilsners that will appeal to the gen-pop crowd receive handles like the 101 lager and 120 pilsner. However, if you’d like to achieve true aficionado status, you’ll have to graduate to hopsier and stronger beers like the 729 brut IPA or the 802 tripel .

Personally, I was reminiscing about time spent in Brussels during my visit, so the tripel happened to hit the spot. Apparently, this means I graduated at the top of my class! How far will you make it?

East Vancouver Breweries

Affectionately known as “Yeast Van,” East Vancouver is home to the largest concentration of breweries anywhere in the city. The majority of the tasting rooms can be found in the formerly industrial neighbourhood of Grandview-Woodlands near Vancouver’s Little Italy, Commercial Drive .

If you don’t mind a bit of a walk along “the drive,” they can be accessed via the Skytrain’s Commercial-Broadway Station. However, you can probably save a bit of time by taking the R5 Hastings Rapidbus from Hastings Street downtown.

The entrance to Luppolo Brewing, East Vancouver

Luppolo Brewing Company

1123 Venables St. |(604) 255-4997| Website

VP Favourite:  Black Lime Gose (4.4% ABV, 4 IBU)

This creative Venables Street brewery takes its name from  luppolo , the Italian word for hops. This was chosen to honour the brewers’ background and the area’s distinctive Italian heritage.

The Italian proverb a tavola non s’invecchia , or at the table, one doesn’t grow old, guides the tasting room experience. You’ll be living la dolce vita as you pair any of their seven taps with an item from their Italian-influenced menu that features charcuterie, panini and focaccia .

Luppolo is mostly known for its inventive sours, saissons and IPAs . So, if you’re looking to try something a little different on your self-guided tour, this may be just the spot to do it. Personally, I enjoyed the black lime gose, a traditional light, tart and sour Leipzig-style beer that is perfect for a warm sunny day.

A selection of tall cans sit on the bar at Strangefellows Brewing, East Vancouver

Strangefellows Brewing

1345 Clark Dr. |(604) 215-0092| Website

VP Favourite:  Talisman Pale Ale (4% ABV, 29 IBU)

After over 20 years of showing off his talent for conventional styles as the head brewer at Yaletown Brewing Company, Ian Hill decided to open up Strangefellows to expand his repertoire.

As a result, many of the beers at Strangefellows have an experimental sour component . But don’t fret, Hill still stays true to his more conventional past by pairing old world traditions and local, seasonal ingredients. The results can be found in the delightful Talisman Pale Ale, easily one of the best pales in the city.

While somewhat isolated on a desolate industrial section of Clark Drive, the tasting room is an attraction in and of itself. The facility comes complete with the Charles Clark Art Gallery and occasional live music that serves to demonstrate the unique talent of many local artists.

A guava sour and an Andean bisque at Andina Brewing, East Vancouver

Andina Brewing Company

1507 Powell St. |(604) 253-2400| Website

VP Favourite:  Jalea Guava Saison (6.4% ABV, 25 IBU)

This 2,000-square-foot banana yellow brewery on Powell Street draws heavily on the Colombian background of its owners. As such, the Spanish language is an integral part of the brewery’s identity, with Castillian names assigned to its collection of cervezas prinicpales .

Andina is Colombian slang for a woman who comes from the Andes. This 7,000 km mountain range passes through the most diverse range of customs, flavours and traditions of any mountain range on earth. The cervezas on tap here are tasked with demonstrating this incredible diversity to those not lucky enough to have visited.

You’ll find more traditional German-style pilsners and lagers reflective of South America’s more European-like South. However, where Andina really shines is with its cervezas limitades , which are inspired by more experimental flavours from the continent’s tropical North.

The menu also features Latin-inspired cocktails and a Colombian food program that contains a delicious variety of empanadas, arepas and ceviches. Highly recommended.

A man holds up a beer in front of the chalkboard at Bomber Brewing, East Vancouver

Bomber Brewing

1488 Adanac St. |(604) 428-7457| Website

VP Favourite:  Avante Garde Pilsner (4.8% ABV, 28 IBU)

This pint-sized brewery tucked away near Little Italy on Adanac Street is the result of the most Canadian of stories. Three former hockey teammates came together with the simple goal of adding more flavour to their post-game pint.

And let me tell you, this all-star team’s collection of lagers, pilsners and IPAs goes bar down faster than an Elias Pettersson slapshot. In my experience, their easy-drinking pilsners are amongst the best in the city.

The tasting room also features events such as Monday Movie Night and, of course, Vancouver Canucks hockey games.

The massive slection of taps at Parallel 49 Brewing, East Vancouver

Parallel49 Brewing Company

1950 Triumph St. |(604) 558-2739| Website

VP Favourite:  Ruby Tears Northwest Red Ale (6% ABV, 40 IBU)

This local brewer may very well be the Vancouver craft beer scenes biggest success stor y. Parallel 49 has risen from humble East Van beginnings to having their creative brews in almost every bar in the city.

In fact, their flagship Ruby Tears Ale was recently even name-checked by Ricky Gervais for producing what he called “the best beer I’d ever tasted”. And who am I to disagree? This rich, caramel, malt-flavoured ale easily holds its own with any of its British-based cousins.

With up to 40 taps on offer, this is amongst the largest tasting rooms in the city. And a renovation recently added a beautiful patio and a full-service food truck inside the facility.

North Vancouver Breweries

The suburb of North Vancouver is quickly becoming one of BC’s hotspots for craft beer. The area is now home to 9 breweries and counting, most of which can be found in the new Shipyards Brewery District .

These spots are perfect for stopping in on your way back from a day skiing the local mountains or visiting attractions such as Grouse Mountain and the Capilano Suspension Bridge .

Simply take the 12-minute Seabus ride from Waterfront Station to Lonsdale Quay, and you’ll have a whole host of options within walking distance.

The entrance to Green Leaf Brewing, North Vancouver

Green Leaf Brewing Company

123 Carrie Cates Ct. |(604) 984-8409| Website

VP Favourite:  Pie Hole Pale Ale (5.6% ABV, 35 IBU)

Green Leaf Brewing is likely the most popular spot for craft beer on the North Shore simply because of its location. Firstly, it’s located a stone’s throw from the Seabus terminal connecting North Van to Downtown Vancouver. Secondly, it’s situated smack dab in the middle of the popular Lonsdale Quay Market .

You’ll find over 80 specialty shops and services selling a wide range of food items, crafts and souvenirs. This makes it a great spot to stop for a pint before you jump back on the Seabus.

I’m a fan of their Pie Hole Pale Ale, which is clean, well-balanced and refreshing. You’ll find a variety of seasonal rotators sprinkled amongst the old standbyes. There’s also a great whiskey list, so don’t be afraid to grab yourself a dram for a nightcap.

The patio at Beere Brewing Co., North Vancouver

Beere Brewing

312 Esplanade E |(604) 983-2163| Website

VP Favourite:  Space Jazz IPA (6.6% ABV, 65 IBU)

At first glance, you may be convinced that this small brewery in the Shipyards Brewery District is prone to spelling errors. However, you’ll soon find that this is not the case. The father and son team behind this North Shore brewer actually possesses the last name, Beere!

So they’re truly living out their destiny.

Beere is located just a short walk from Lonsdale Quay . Their street-front tasting room is home to fantastic views of Burrard Inlet and the Vancouver skyline, so it’s a perfect place to relax with an après ski pint.

The name of the game here is the fruity, citrusy, hazy IPAs that are typical of the Northwest. However, you’ll also find double dry-hopped pale ales and pilsners and the odd sour or saison.

A couple drinks Deep Cove beers while hiking

Deep Cove Brewers and Distillers

2270 Dollarton Hwy #170 |(604) 770-1136| Website

VP Favourite:  Mole Stout (6% ABV, 21 IBU)

It may be located a little out of the way in the scenic neighbourhood of Deep Cove .

However, this unique tasting room is guaranteed to be worth the trip. You’ll find a spacious barrel-lined lounge , patio and restaurant that serves an honest, robust menu of tacos, share plates and flatbreads.

DCBD aims to bring unique flavour profiles to traditional favourites like IPAs, pilsners and pale ales. However, this strategy is also extended to less common traditional brews like their rye lager, coconut porter and coffee dobbelbock.

Deep Cove is also a small-batch distiller , so you’ll find an innovative cocktail program featuring their Mediterranean gin and Deep Cove vodka.

The Ultimate Vancouver Brewery Tour In East Van

Posted on Published: March 11, 2019  - Last updated: March 14, 2024

Categories North America , British Columbia , Travel

If you’re a beer fanatic visiting Vancouver, you have to visit East Vancouver. This is the microbrew hub of Vancouver Canada… it’s even been nicknamed the Yeast Van Brewery District.

There are over 15 Vancouver breweries in this area, all within a few blocks of each other. Because there’s so many, this is my recommended Vancouver Brewery tour in East Van .

Psst! This blog post contains affiliate links in it which sends me a bit of extra money if you use them… at no extra cost to you!

Go On a Craft Brewery Tour in East Van - The Best Local Activity If you’re going to Vancouver you have to check out Yeast Van’s Brewery District. This is home to most of Vancouver’s local breweries. And I have the perfect tour for you to go on. It’s a huge part of their laid back west coast vibes. Every day after work locals hit up these breweries. #craftbeervancouver #microbreweryvancouver #drinkbeervancouver #bestbreweriesvancouver

Why Visit Yeast Vancouver Breweries?

Although East Vancouver a bit out of the way from the city centre, a Vancouvery brewery tour is well worth your time.

East Vancouver breweries are a huge part of Vancouver life and their laid back west coast vibes. This is the spot to go every day after work for locals!

It was by far my favourite thing to do in Vancouver, probably because it’s not a typical tourist attraction . You’re just out trying good craft beer with locals! ( p.s. see my top things to do in Vancouver in my post here ).

Where Is East Vancouver?

Yeast Van is an industrial part of Vancouver to the east of the city! It’s sandwiched between the harbour and train station. So just a heads up – it’s not the nicest .

But you aren’t coming here for the views, you’re coming here for the brews!

How To Get To Yeast Vancouver Breweries?

If you have a car in Vancouver, leave it at the hotel! You’re coming to Yeast Van to try all the different brews and you don’t want any drunk driving.

Thankfully, Yeast Van is relatively easy to get to. You could easily taxi or Uber. But, you can also take public transit.

If you’re coming from downtown Vancouver, you’ll most likely take a bus to East Vancouver ( most likely the 022 ). Plan your trip with TransLink here .

If you still decide to drive, please at least have a designated driver that doesn’t drink! Otherwise, book a guided tour, like this one on Viator , so your whole party can taste the brews!

Come Prepared To Your Vancouver Brewery Tour

There are a few things to note before making your way to microbreweries Vancouver!

The Food Situation In Yeast Van…

As I said, this is the industrial part of Vancouver, so there’s not much else in the area aside from breweries.

Because of that, make sure you eat before, and bring some snacks with you. Most of the breweries will serve some food, but it can be quite pricey for a small portion.

2024 food update: Now it seems that most breweries have partnered with local restaurants to provide more food options to their customers!

Be Prepared To Walk!

If you listened to me and left your car at home, that means the only way to get around Yeast Van is by walking.

This isn’t an issue because the breweries are all within walking distance to each other! The entire walk from the first brewery to the last is about 30 minutes, and don’t forget you’ll be stopping along the way.

Best Vancouver Brewery Tour In “Yeast Van”

Along my Vancouver brewery tour route, you’ll stop at more than just breweries along the way!

1. Strange Fellows Brewing

Strange Fellows Brewery is the first stop on the Vancouver brewery tour.

It’s probably the most well-known brewery out of the bunch (you’ll actually be able to find their beer in stores throughout Vancouver).

The building itself is quite small, but there never seems to be people waiting. You can see the giant vats in the back while you enjoy your beer.

There is an onsite restaurants serving small bites and pizzas. Plus they feature a local artist every month in their Charles Clark Gallery in the back, so be sure to check that out!

Where To Stop En Route To The Next Brewery?

On route to your next brewery, there are a few places to stop along the way.

If you head towards the train tracks from Strange Fellows Brewing, you’ll reach Parker Street Studios . You can of course visit the studio, but the real point of interest is the art (graffiti) outside the studio.

This is the perfect photo stop!

A bit further down the street you’ll find La Casa Gelato , if you’re already feeling a bit peckish before your next tasting!

2. Luppolo Brewing Co.

Luppolo is an Italian inspired brewery, all the way from their draft styles to the decor, and now offering local artisanal Italian pizza.

I found they had some really unique brews at Luppolo that were either a real hit or a complete miss! But it’s still worth checking out.

It’s also a very homey atmosphere inside. When we were there someone was even throwing a family birthday party.

3. Off The Rail Brewery

Off the Rail Brewing is a lot smaller than the last two microbreweries on the tour (which says a lot because I considered Strange Fellows to be small!).

Unfortunately, you don’t see any part of the brewing process at Off the Rail Brewery. Their tasting room is actually above the entire brewery! But there’s nonetheless a great atmosphere.

They have fun names for each beer and I loved the designs on every the can (cue my inner graphic designer screams!).

Off the Rail Brewing also offers a great non-alcoholic option , called Bine Hop Water, if you’re in need of a bit of a break from beer. I assume you do have to like the taste of hops to enjoy it though… which I do not…

On top of their 10-12 beers on tap, they also have 3 nitro taps , featuring beers that are rarely available outside the tap room (making a visit here even more worthwhile!).

While they don’t have a full restaurant, they do offer a few snack and light meal options to tide you over.

4. Storm Brewing LTD… Best Brewery Vancouver!

Storm Brewing will be the longest walk on my Vancouver brewery tour, coming in at a total of 13 minutes from Off The Rail Brewing! But it’s worth it.

I gauruntee you have never been to a brewery like this before.

Although Storm Brewing was surprisingly my favourite stop on the tour , you should mentally prepare yourself for this East Vancouver brewery!

It’s how should I say… Different.

It’s in a graffiti painted garage that you’d probably just walk by if you didn’t know it was there. It’s very casual , there aren’t any seats. And that’s all I’m going to say for now, the rest you’ll have to see for yourself!

Just keep in mind that I’m so picky about food and cleanliness and I drank their beer. That’s also why it’s the second to last place on the list. You’re hopefully a bit tipsy by the time you get here so you won’t care what it looks like.

storm brewing vancouver

But just remember,  I loved it! You also won’t find their beer anywhere on the market. And they have some of the most unique flavours I’ve ever tasted. They had so many that I wanted to try, it was hard to choose.

And it gets even better… tasters are FREE!! Yup! They want you to try their beer. All they ask for is a tip at the end.

Or, instead of tipping you can buy a growler and they’ll fill it up for you with your favourite beer.

Be aware that Storm actually closes fairly early . The latest they stay open is 8 P.M. on Friday and Saturday. And the rest of the week they close at 6 P.M. So make sure to plan accordingly.

They also don’t serve any food here, it’s all about the beer!

Glass Classic Logo Bottles

5. Odd Society Spirits (Distillery!)

Now that you’ve survived the garage, it’s time to step it up a notch and go back up to some classiness. We’re headed to Odd Society Distillery.

Here, you’re done with beer, they make their own spirits . They’re mainly known for their vodka and gin, but in recent years have also released several different whiskeys.

You can either order their spirits straight or order one of their many unique cocktails.

I don’t usually like gin, especially straight, but I really didn’t mind theirs, that’s how good it is!

And this isn’t just a bar, it’s a tasting lounge with a distillery in the back!

Vancouver Brewery FAQ: What Is A Growler?

Even though I’m Canadian I had no idea what a growler was before I went to Vancouver. And now I’m seeing them everywhere!

It’s just a big beer bottle that you can reseal and carry around.

Because you can’t find most of these beers in a store, it’s common to go to your favourite brewery and fill up your growler to enjoy at home. Usually at a very reasonable price too!

Visiting Vancouver: Hotel Recommendations

Need a place to stay in Vancouver? I wouldn’t exactly recommended staying in East Van… as you might be able to tell, it isn’t the nicest neighbourhood!

We stayed at an Airbnb close to Gastown in Vancouver, so it wasn’t directly in the city centre, but nothing in Vancouver is real that far (especially with public transit!).

If you’re interested in an apartment in Gastown, stay at Full Throttle on Plum Guide. It’s a fully furnished rustic apartment with a private parking spot and shared outdoor spaces! See availability and room rates here .

Golf

Welcome back to the Masters, where we can all be together again

Masters champions and the Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament Fred S. Ridley at the 2024 Masters Club Dinner prior to the start of the 2024 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club, Tuesday, April 9, 2024.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — On Tuesday night the most exclusive group in one of the most private clubs in the United States had its annual dinner. They drank wine and enjoyed a menu chosen by its newest member, a traditional Basque feast that spoke to his ancestry.

They sat and told stories. Of Seve Ballesteros, a Spaniard who played the game of golf four decades ago with such joy and artistry he defied convention and blazed his own way. He was a member of this group once, but taken away too soon. Those who knew him will never tire of speaking about him, and those who didn’t, including Jon Rahm, the man of honor on this night, will hang on every word of those tall tales.

It was a wonderful night full of laughter and camaraderie, those who attended the Champions Dinner at the 88th Masters said, and at the end of it, Tom Watson asked Augusta National Golf Club Chairman Fred Ridley if he might mind if Watson spoke to the other 33 men in the room. Ridley urged him to do so.

“I’m looking around the room, and I’m seeing just a wonderful experience everybody is having. They are jovial. They are having a great time. They are laughing. I said, ‘Ain’t it good to be together again?’” Watson says.

There was a pall across the room as the eight-time major champion spoke these words, and then Raymond Floyd, 81 and a Masters champion in 1976, stood up and said his goodbyes. The night ended, and the new normal returned.

Professional golf is broken. The PGA Tour over here and LIV over there. There’s four events a year where all the best players in the game share a driving range. Everyone is richer than they were at this time two years ago, but at what cost? Even those who swear a deal must be made to mend fences can remain naive to how much their greed was the original sin.

It cannot continue to survive like this. I know that. Tom Watson knows that. Do they know that?

Watson’s ambition, the reason he stood and said those words, was that he was hoping Jordan Spieth and Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm were all listening. The players have the control. They can bring us together again. Now what are they going to do about it?

“I hope that the players themselves took that to say, you know, we have to do something. We have to do something,” Watson said.

Watson, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player began this Masters Thursday with an opening tee shot, a symbol of their place in the game of golf and the respect the game has for each of them. They’ve won titles and trophies all over the world, and amassed fortunes doing so. Today’s players should not be begrudged for doing the same, but we can also fairly ask when enough is enough and when legacies will matter more than a new yacht.

Augusta National is a club where every member has money but no amount of money can make you a member. It is not a club immune to progress, understanding that even though original architects Alister MacKenzie and Bobby Jones created a masterpiece, they also did so 92 years ago. There is always tinkering with these 18 holes, lengthening them or removing trees or adding trees. It extends to the patron experience, where millions are poured into improving efficiency but a cup of Crow’s Nest beer will run you $6 and a pimento cheese sandwich $1.50.

There’s something to be learned in there. The most important thing is always the most important thing, and you should never forget it.

A Masters winner’s new purpose? Bringing ‘humanity’ to its broadcast

Something about golf is inherently personal: you shoot your score, and no one else’s. “You hit it. You’ve got to go chase it,” Nicklaus said. But it’s also a game where everything about it feels connected, every shot and every round a remembrance of a time, a place, and the company. It’s a predominant reason why the Masters feels so much bigger than the other three majors, the consistent venue providing us with a shared language to revisit each April.

This is my first Masters. On Wednesday afternoon, as most of the action was across the way at the par-3 course, I took a stroll to Amen Corner. I sat in a nearly-empty grandstand and took it in, feeling the wind pick up and watching the pines softly sway around me. I thought about my dad, who we lost in 2020, and how much he would have loved it. How many Masters he watched on television, and how the men he watched in their prime at the old Bing Crosby Clambake are now among the oldest in the green jackets.

I felt connected to my dad in that moment. I’m not the only one who has had a similar experience, who wore his dad’s old golf shoes or their mom’s favorite hat to their first trip to Augusta National and just took it all in. That’s what this place does for us, the power in its history and commitment to it.

We all feel together again at the Masters. It’d just be nice if we could feel that way more often.

Owen Riegling

Canadian country singer Owen Riegling is buckling up for a unique summer tour. The emerging artist is honouring his small town roots — Riegling hails from Mildmay, Ontario — with free performances in 12 small-town bars across four provinces.

The term small-town is a bit loose here: several of the performances are actually in small-ish cities like Thunder Bay, Saskatoon and Sault Ste. Marie. But they're certainly in places that often get overlooked by touring acts, especially rapidly rising stars like Riegling.

Riegling was named a Spotify Artist to Watch and Amazon Music Breakthrough Artist this year, and just picked up three CMAOntario Award nominations. His single "Old Dirt Roads," an ode to small-town living, has spent eight weeks on the Canadian Hot 100.
