What You Get with Victoria Hop on Hop off Buses

Victoria is most famous for its innate British sensibility and spectacular colonial architecture .

It doesn’t matter if you’re enjoying fish and chips along the Inner Harbour, grabbing afternoon tea at the Empress, or cooling down with a crisp pint: Victoria’s Britishness is hard to escape.

So what better way to explore the city than from British-style double decker buses?

Furthermore, Victoria is located in Canada’s only Mediterranean climate zone . This means you can expect temperate, dry summers .

Unlike London, here we can safely drop the top down – and the kids really love this.

What you get with your Victoria double decker bus tour:

  • Double Decker Bus
  • Open top, enclosed lower-level
  • Fully narrated tour (English only)
  • Wheelchair/stroller accessible (lower-level only)
  • Smartphone vouchers accepted
  • Fully interactive customizable brochure

Tips For Taking the Victoria Tourist Bus

1) Purchase your tickets online

Buying your tickets in advance is convenient, allows you to avoid queues, and most importantly saves you $3.00 per ticket.

2) Plan to use your Victoria bus tour ticket on day one

I always make sure to place tours of any variety towards the front end of my travel itinerary. This rule holds true for every city I visit – and Victoria is no exception.

If you can take the trip on your first day of arrival you’ll quickly become oriented to the city’s layout. You’ll also get tips from the tour guides and other travelers to improve the rest of your trip.

4) Expect good weather but plan for the worst

The Victoria Hop on Hop Off tour operates year round, rain or shine. So be sure to be prepared for whatever mother nature has to offer.

Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water to protect you from the sun, particularly in the dead of summer. Those particularly sensitive to the sun can also opt to sit in the bus’s enclosed lower level.

Conversely, you should also prepare for the worst. Read the Victoria weather forecast and bring a light jacket and umbrella just in case.

Victoria may be drier than other British Columbia cities but the west coast is still quite rainy.

5) Listen to your driver/other passengers

The Victoria hoho bus is brought to life by a fully narrated tour from a knowledgeable guide – so don’t go plugging in your headphones to listen to music.

Here, you’ll learn interesting tidbits about the city’s history and culture. And you’ll also gain valuable information for the remainder of your trip.

Moreover, you’ll also receive a customized interactive brochure to provide further guidance on Victoria’s main attractions. You’ll be an expert in no time.

In addition, other passengers can also be a valuable source of information.

You’d be surprised how many people have taken the Victoria bus tour multiple times – or how many locals are riding. They might just give you that dynamite dinner recommendation that helps you experience Victoria on a whole new level.

6) Board at lesser known stops

If you’re planning on getting on at The Empress, Chinatown, or Beacon Hill Park during peak season you might have a bit of a wait, or maybe even a fight for the better seats upstairs.

Victoria’s City Centre is quite small and easily walkable. Thus many lesser known stops can be located a relatively short distance from their more popular counterparts. Try and get on there.

We had two issues, in one of them the responsibility is 100 % of this company and the second it is our fault due that we selected this company: 1) we decided to visit the Terry fox monument and to walk around it, our surprise started when we tried to thake the next bus and there was not enough space in the bus. The day was really cold and with three little children we needed to walk from that place to the castle for more than 30 minutes. 2) the second problem we had and was our responsibility is that we decided to take the bus instead of a taxi, it could have been much better and cheaper to take a taxi instead of paying lot of money in this tour . It was a robbery. Regards Read more Written December 29, 2019
  • Ginko1215 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Big Bus Tour & Craigdarroch Castle Pass If you buy this ticket on line and you are going to Victoria via a cruise line please be aware that your e ticket for the Castle is not valid until you get to Victoria. You will pass the castle on it's route but cannot enter until it after you go to their ticket area (ten minutes away). There they will exchange the e ticket for a printed ticket and you will have to go back on the bus for a 45 minute ride back to the Castle. This is a terrible setup and we did not see the castle even though we paid for the ticket. Also be aware it is a 45 minute wait for another bus once you get off. Read more Written December 10, 2019
  • nhdoc 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Night tour of darkness. Was it a joke? First of all it was a rainy evening (not unusual for Victoria) but the bus had no AC so the windows were all fogged up. A blessing in disguise. NOTHING TO SEE AT NIGHT. Chinatown and the downtown were the only lighted areas on the tour. Tour was a shortened version of their day tour and recorded narration was edited by the driver (I am sure half of the sites were incorrectly described as we could not see anything anyway). I really felt like this was some sort of candid camera stunt. The only good thing about it was they dropped us off at the ship terminal rather than downtown saving us the $10 PP ripoff bus back. We only took this tour because we had a $50 coupon from Travelocity so the tour only cost us $14 US for two but it was still overpriced. Speaking of prices, if you really do want to take this (or any other tour with this bus company) I would advise you to simply wait and buy the tickets directly from them. The full $32 US price from the excursion company was substantially more than the $25 CAD price the tickets cost from the kiosk downtown. As I said I would strongly recommend NOT taking the night tour but if you must buy your tickets from them and not from the excursion company. Read more Written September 23, 2019

  • KnitLove 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Very impressed This was an excellent bus tour full of great information about Victoria. The drivers were excellent and very willing to help with directions and city information. I found them very accommodating. Both drivers I saw added in plenty of details beyond what was on the recording. Also important: they were on time getting to the stops. Well worth the price and the time required, this tour covered a lot of ground and gave me a great overview of the city. A word of advice: Even if it seems like a warm day on the ground, it is a good idea to bring a sweater with you for this tour. The open air part of the bus can get quite chilly, especially when you pass near the water. Read more Written August 21, 2019

  • Jadapandy 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles A little hard to find, but eventually gets you to where you want to go We booked the big bus Victoria through Costco’s shore excursion website. Booking was easy, there was some information provided on the email which I had printed before we left, but due to no signage it was a little confusing for the pickups. We were never provided a time schedule from the driver so everything was sort of a guessing game. We decided to walk the main route through Victoria understanding that there was a stop in Chinatown that we were going to be able to take, unfortunately again, no indication as to where his pick up was going to be. I ended up calling several numbers finally reaching somebody in Fort Lauderdale Florida, who gave me another number that was not listed and someone answered and told me where we had to stand in front of to be picked up. Had I not reach that individual we probably would’ve missed the shuttle and possibly getting back to the ship on time without having to take another taxi. While I might recommend it may be the ride itself, but all in all for the experience NO, you probably would just be better off traveling with taxis. Read more Written August 7, 2019
  • Vickia314 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Nice intro to the city The tour buses were comfy and the narration is interesting. It is taped but you can interject to ask driver questions. Often, our driver stopped the tape to show us landmarks or interesting sites. We saw peacocks, deer and harbor seals along the way. We stopped off at Oak Village and the castle. Others stopped at the park and petting zoo for the little ones. There were other wonderful stops along the way. Photo ops were plentiful. Half the bus is covered and the other half is open air. All in all a great option for 90 minute (I think) tour of the city and surrounding area. Recommend. Read more Written August 2, 2019

They must be redeemed at their ticket counter about ten minutes past the castle. It will take you 45 minutes to circle back to it. We were not able to go back to the castle so we wasted money buying that ticket. Be aware! You could wait 4t minutes if you hop off the bus. Read more Written July 7, 2019
  • DoloresJacoby 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Butchart Gardens Little Bus I love this company!!! Their prices are very good and more competitive than other companies in town. They are on Government Street at a little kiosk just beyond the Fairmont Hotel. I loved taking a small passenger van to Butchart Gardens as it was wonderful to interact with the driver and it was more personable. I could actually see the sights better, including the Olympic Mountains from home! It goes every hour as does the hop on hop off busses in town. Beautiful vistas, wonderful staff! • HappyExplorer7752014 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Enjoyable tour - great way to start your stay in Victoria. We had great weather for our tour, which matters because we sat towards the back of the open-top bus. The tour narration is recorded and the sound comes from speakers located in the roof of the covered section in the front of the bus. If you’re sitting way in back on a crowded bus the sound will not be as good for you. Road noise will also have an impact. That said, we really enjoyed the tour. Our driver was considerate and would restart or replay entirely the recorded section if the timing of our approach to an area of interest was off. Be sure to ask about the frequency of buses and pay attention to the day’s schedule. This is a great way to get your bearings to begin your stay in Victoria. My husband and I made the circle twice, using to first rounded trip to decide where to “hop off” later. We were able to begin our tour at Stop 10 right by our hotel. You do not have to begin at Stop 1. We purchased our tickets on-line. Very convenient. Read more Written June 14, 2019
  • Kristin C 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Not worth the cost. Wait too long for bus. We bought this tour on our ferry and wish we hadn’t. Each stop takes an hour for another bus to come by and there were some places we would have stopped at but didn’t want to wait an hour for another bus. Also there were not individual ear buds and with the street traffic and bus noise you could not here the driver talking about what was around you or the prerecorded history. There are a lot better ways to see the city. Read more Written June 9, 2019

We were not able to get on and off because we would have to wait 1 1/2 hours for the bus to come around again. Bring a jacket it was quite windy. The driver does not speak everything is on a recording. Speakers are not that great when you are sitting out in the open. Read more Written June 5, 2019

Victoria proves a gentle blend of colonial England and up-to-date Western Canada. The capital city of British Columbia, Victoria is located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island off Canada's Pacific coast. Named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and the Dominion of Canada, Victoria is one of the oldest cities in the Pacific Northwest, with British settlement beginning in 1841. The city has retained a large number of its historic buildings, in particular its two most famous landmarks, the British Columbia Parliament Buildings (home of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia) and the Empress Hotel.

The city's Chinatown is the second oldest in North America after San Francisco's. Whether you want to visit the major attractions, spend time shopping, or visit one of the many fine restaurants, this is the tour for you! Book this flexible sightseeing tour of Victoria today.

Please Note: There are 20 stops on this route and it takes approximately 90 minutes to complete the route without getting off. The bus runs every 30 to 45 minutes. Traveler Reviews

We took the evening tour on the big bus. It's supposed to be about an hour and a half. It took around an hour and 10 minutes. But that is not a problem. We covered a lot of ground and saw a lot of Victoria. The recorded information that was played during the tour was detailed and there was not a lot of quiet time. So needless to say we found out a lot about Victoria. The bus was full, so I'm glad we took a taxi for a flat rate of $10 to downtown at the starting point of the tour. The bus was nearly full when we departed, at around our second or third stop it did stop at the bus stop near the cruise terminal. The remaining people did wind up fitting on the bus but they were separated from one another. So I recommend you go down to the ticket booth in town. It is near the visitor center. When the bus arrived it was a lot more rundown than the other tour companies. When we stepped on board and sat in our seats it was similar to a modified elementary school size bus. I am about 5'11" and my knees could not fit without turning sideways otherwise I would hit the seat in front of me. The back half of the bus is open, the front half of the bus has a roof over it. The driver was very nice. So if you are not tall, and you don't mind driving in a less pretty bus, it was a good price.

Its 45 minutes between buses and u have no idea if its early or late. The schedule is a guide. The audio recording and drivers are hard to hear.

We visited Victoria 1 day while on a cruise. We purchased the tickets several months prior. We walked about 25 minutes from the pier to the initial bus stop, which was expected. We arrived around 10:30 am and were told the next bus would show up around 11 am. The bus showed up full with no seats. About half the people got off the bus just to validate their ticket and got right back on. There were about 30 people waiting to get on. No one was able to get on the bus. My wife decided to walk to the China town bus stop for the tour and arrived 10 minutes prior to the scheduled bus arrival. We waited 30 minutes and never saw a bus. We decided to walk 30 minutes to see a castle since the bus was useless. After viewing the castle, we waited at the bus stop for one last hope. We arrived about 10 minutes prior to the scheduled bus arrival and waited 30 minutes. The bus never showed up. A different hop on hop off bus company, the grey line, arrived and they let us get a ride back to the city center area. This was by far the worst hop-on hop-off company. I would not recommend to anyone.

We didn't get off the cruise ship until 8p (fault of cruise ship)…...then Customs is a long walk from the pier.....and my husband is disabled (uses a walker with wheels)…...and we never made it to customs (just too hard on him)….[we couldn't bring Carnival's wheel chair off the ship]……..so we turned around and went back to the ship!!!!!!…….so we paid for nothing......not Viator's fault...…...But, it is not a short walk!!!!!!!......and Carnival should be more organized and get disabled people off first!!!!…….Very sad that we missed Victoria!!!...….I gave it a 1 because we never got to take the tour...….I'm sure it was fabulous, though.
