Overall amazing experience! Met some amazing people and enjoyed some beautiful views. While it was the hottest time of the year, our team had a great support system to ensure everyone was well hydrated. The bikes were nice and sturdy, especially climbing up some of those monstrous hills and the paniers were very handy! I would recommend this trip to anyone looking to enjoy the countryside and south of France!

Wine Tasting Holidays in France

vineyard tours france

If you’re looking to go away on a complete wine tasting holiday in France , I would consider all of your options.

Which regions do you want to visit? What types of wine do you typically enjoy? Is there a brand or type of wine that you really want to try? Are there any wines you definitely want to avoid?

These are the questions you’ll need to ask yourself before you can get started on planning your holiday in the French winelands!

FAQ: Wine Tours in France

Next, let’s jump into some essential information you’ll need to know so you can best plan your French wineland trip.

Each wine region is unique in terms of the grapes that grow best in the regional climate, as well as the wine styles created by its winemakers. Below, I’ve provided some helpful information so you have everything you need to select which vineyards may be the best fit for you!

What are the 5 Famous Regions in France that Produce Still Wines?

Bordeaux has some of the leading wine tours in France and lures travelers in every year

When it comes to wine, France really does know best. In fact, France is home to not one, not two, but five famous wine regions! I know, it’s pretty amazing.

So, what are they? Well, you have Bordeaux , Burgundy , Champagne , Provence , and the Loire Valley . Each region is known for a specific flavor or style of wine. For example, Champagne is most popular for well, champagne! As well as light and bubbly sparkling white wines.

Burgundy, on the other hand, is most well known for its pinot noir and chardonnay. The region you should visit highly depends on the type of wine you like or want to try.

Here is a quick breakdown of which types of wine each French wine region is known for:

Bordeaux ⮕ Merlot & Cabernet Sauvignon Burgundy ⮕ Pinot Noir & Chardonnay Champagne ⮕ Light, fruity, sparkling wines Provence ⮕ Rosés Loire Valley ⮕ Sauvignon Blanc

Of course, you can find almost every variety of wine in the world in every one of these regions, but if you’re trying to become a true wine connoisseur, then it will be in your best interest to choose a destination (or destinations ) that speaks to your palette’s preferences.

Below, I’ve broken down the best wine tours in France by region, so you can easily find one that is perfect for your taste preferences. Remember that each tour’s specific inclusions and exclusions may vary, so be sure to click on the link and read all of the fine print before booking.

What is the Best Wine Region in France?

When it comes to wine tours in France, some regions are better known for specific wines than others

Popular opinion has made its claim that Bordeaux is the leading wine region to visit in France . It’s globally recognized as the wine capital of the world and even earned a UNESCO World Heritage Site status back in 2007 .

However, no matter who you ask, every wine connoisseur is going to have a different opinion owing to their individual preferences.

If you enjoy light and bubbly with a slight hint of fruitiness, then Champagne may become your favorite region, but if you favor deep, rich reds, then Burgundy will likely be high on your list!

With over 8,000 different wine producers catering to every taste of every traveler, it’s no surprise that Bordeaux is frequently awarded with the “ best wine region in France ” title.

What is the Most Famous Wine in France?

These top wine tours in France will reveal some of the best wines for your palette

It’s hardly surprising that the best wine region in France and the wine capital of the world is also home to the most famous wine in France .

Generally speaking, Bordeaux’s popular Merlot’s make up more than half of the wine produced in these vineyards and is definitely among the most famous wines in France .

While there is no wine, in particular, that has earned the top badge for the most famous wine in the country across the board, there are a few popular picks that continue to receive high accolades year after year!

Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots are typically the two highest contenders, with Chardonnay and Champagne not far behind.

Are Wine Tastings Free in France?

As far as wine tours in France go, the ones among the lavender fields in Provence are simply exquisite

While it depends on the winery you visit, most of the time wine tastings are not free in France unless you are staying at their associated hotel and have purchased a package.

Some smaller wineries will give away light wine samples free of charge, but don’t expect this from the more distinguished estates.

However, if you’re looking to take part in wine tastings in France on a budget, you can usually find great deals (like 5-7 samples for as low as 10 euros a person) by just checking out the websites of the wine estates in the regions you’ll be in!

It’s super simple to check online and even book ahead so you know you won’t have to wait when you arrive. This is especially important during the busy season of September through October when it is harvesting season.

How Much is a Wine Tour in France?

wine tours in France typically cost between $50-200 per person

The cost of a wine tour in France is going to vary greatly depending on which region you’re in, how long it is (hours versus days), the number of samples you try, if add-ons like transportation and lunch are included , and if you visit more than one region in France .

In fact, they vary so greatly, I’ve seen tours as low as $11 (not that you should expect these to be very good) and as high as over $2,000 for private, multi-day tours!

But, for the most part, a tour that lasts for a few hours in one region and includes between 3-6 different wines, you can expect to pay between $50-200 per person .

Can You Visit Wineries in France?

Most wine tours in France allow you to visit their lovely wineries and vineyards

Absolutely! Most wine tours in France allow you to visit their wineries without question . You will find that some vineyards on the property may be roped off at the time of your visit to allow for proper growth, but this isn’t always the case.

This is simply to prevent unwanted trekking through fragile ecosystems which could inhibit or affect the growth of the grapes.

Many wineries in France have both vineyards and wine cellars available for tours, but you will likely need to be with a guide for the majority of your visit.

What Time of Year is Best for Wine Tours?

vineyard tours france

The best time to visit France for a wine tour is typically during the harvest season which falls between September and October. During this period, you’ll have the opportunity to see the winemaking process in action and perhaps even participate in grape harvesting events.

However, it’s worth noting that this is also peak season for French wine connoisseurs so it can be crowded. If you prefer a quieter trip, consider visiting in late spring (May and June), when the vineyards are lush and beautiful, and the weather is comfortable.

You likely won’t see many grape-covered vineyards, but it’s an amazing time to sample the wine from the previous season without thousands of other tourists around.

Regardless of the time of year you choose, each season offers a unique and delightful experience in France’s wine regions.

Can I Take a France Wine Tour by Train?

vineyard tours france

Yes, it’s entirely possible to take a wine tour in France by train. The French rail system is extensive and well-connected, allowing easy access to major wine regions like Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne.

Some companies even offer organized wine tour packages that include train travel, making your wine exploration stress-free and enjoyable. However, these usually add up to thousands of euros per person.

You could also create your very own French wine tour by choosing your estates in advance, then traveling to them via train and taxi or by rental car. I personally know people that did this, and in the end they said it was great getting to stop for pictures along the way whenever they wanted, but it was a lot of effort and time on the road.

Overall, they wouldn’t do it again and on their return to France they would certainly be booking a guided tour to take care of all the logistics for them.

How Do I Plan a Wine Tasting Trip to France?

It's easy to book a wine tour in France! Simply discover what kinds of wine you like and then plan your trip around those regions in France!

It may seem daunting, but planning a wine trip to France is really quite simple. The Champagne region is known for, well, champagne! So, if you love a glass of the bubbly stuff, be sure to include at least a few nights in this region where you’ll find endless bubbles of every kind.

If you aren’t really a fan of reds, then perhaps it’s best to spend less time in the Burgundy region.

But, if you want to taste it all, you really can’t go wrong as every wine region in France houses spectacular wines of every kind!

Or, if you would like a little bit of help, I have actually created personal wine trips across France for honeymooners seeking a romantic getaway, and I would be happy to help you too!

I waited 50 years to travel to France. I imagined every detail to make my dream trip come true. I needed help in making the dream a reality.

From my first phone call to IntoThe Vineyard and meeting Morgan, to actually sitting in a vineyard in Provence sipping a chardonnay, they held my hand and planned each beautiful step. They listened to me and tailored exactly the trip I wanted. I chose to do it as a solo trip but never felt alone. The accommodations, drivers, and details all made for a flawless first-time international trip.

Madison Dreith and her team did an outstanding job of arranging a memorable visit to the Bordeaux region of France, as well as a one-day "foodie" tour of Paris. It was so easy to enjoy the trip when we had drivers who knew the area to take us to the different wineries. The restaurants selected for us to have our lunches were outstanding as well. Into the Vinyard allowed us to fully enjoy our time in Bordeaux.

Bordeaux Place de Palais

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour in Bordeaux. This tour was in August so we know it was a challenge. But their delivery was World Class. The service people lined up by Into the Vineyard were engaging, thoughtful and respectful. The two hotels, although small both in number of rooms and room size, were quaint. Their breakfasts and afternoon beverage arrangements were a nice touch. The specific wine tours had much more of an educational tone to them as compared with other wine tours we experienced previously. A unique aspect of the week was a side boat trip in Archachon. It was an interesting break from the wine tours and the boat captain was incredibly humorous. Recommend this tour and this tour company highly!

Ruinart Caves tight

Booked us an amazing trip to Champagne and Corsica. We were so impressed by the quality of the hotels they recommended and the guides they paired us up with. Not only did they arrange fantastic tours of well-known wineries but also small independent ones. Super professional and their attention to detail was great. Corsica was suggested to us and was everything we wanted and more!

Brad Jantz

We just had an amazing trip to France/Spain to celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary. I want to thank Into the Vineyard as they picked wonderful spots for us to stay along with some amazing adventures.

Colin heard our desires and was able to point us in the right direction so that we could enjoy the experience without being constantly on the move. The part I really appreciated was that we wanted wine activities, primarily in Bordeaux, but had enough experience to plan non-wine day tours for us in the other cities, such as a Tapas tour and a cheese/barkery/chocolate tour.

What is a Vineyard Tour?

Wine regions of france, the best france winery tours, final thoughts on france wine tours.

So, what exactly is a vineyard tour? You’ve probably heard the term before and have some idea of what it entails.

In a nutshell, a vineyard tour takes wine enthusiasts visiting France into the heart of the wine regions to visit individual estates or Chateaus. You will find yourself immersed in the history of the estate, learning about the production processes, farming techniques, and of course, tasting amazing wines.

France Winery Tour Map

When it comes to wine regions in France, it’s like the land of milk and honey – they are beyond blessed to have many regions spread across the country. With such a variety of landscapes, ranging from the coastlines on both the east and the west, to mountainous regions like the Alps and the Pyrenees, there is such terroir diversity in the country.

With this diversity in terroir, each region has its own specialities and varietals that are best suited to be grown there. Wherever you stay in France , you can be assured of one thing – that there will be an amazing vineyard with delectable wines close by.

A quick important note before we carry on, because it features a lot, is the use term AOC, or Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée . This is used to certify the geographical origins of wines, as well as cheeses and other agricultural products.

Right, let’s dive into the regions for the best winery tours in France!

Saint-Emilion Bordeaux France

First and foremost, is none other than Bordeaux, one of the most famous wine regions in the world. Located on the west coast of France, slightly inland from the sea, the wine region of Bordeaux spans both banks of the Girond Estuary. With a highest point of a mere 45 meters above sea level, Bordeaux is pretty flat! Rainfall occurs throughout the year given the close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, although the climate is described as “maritime warm”.

Soil types in the region are predominantly clay and gravel – generally found on either side of the river. The left bank is predominantly gravel, while the right bank is predominantly clay, each favoring the planting of different varietals. You’ll find mainly Cabernet Sauvignon planted in the warmer gravel soils, while Merlot favors the cooler, moisture-retaining clay soils. Other varietals permitted to be grown in the region include Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Carménère for red wines, and Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle for white wines.

There are also a number of appellations in Bordeaux, with some of the most notable places to stay being Margaux, Pauillac, Saint Emilion, Sauternes, and Pomerol. Chateau Latour, Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Margaux, Chateau Haut Brion, and Château Mouton Rothschild are all regarded as some of the most prestigious wines in the world, all holding premier cru status.

Champagne France

Champagne, found in northern France, is built on some of the largest limestone deposits in the world. The region is often referred to as having vine-covered hillsides, with vineyards being planted mainly on slopes. This has been discovered to favor the production of Champagne along with the limestone-rich soils – the finished products benefiting from beautiful minerality.

Another unique aspect of Champagne is its dual climatic influence meaning that it is exposed to both continental and oceanic influences. The vineyards are exposed to plenty of sunlight in summer, with just the right amount of rainfall throughout the year, and well-drained soils. There are three principal grapes planted in the region – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.

There are four main sub-regions within Champagne – Montagne de Reims, Marne Valley, Côte des Blancs, and Côte des Bar. The most notable producers from the region include Moet & Chandon, Tattinger, Ruinart, Dom Perignon, Krug, Gosset, and Bollinger.

vineyard tours france

Paris is not one of France’s wine regions per se, but it is closely located to four of the other most well-known regions for day trips from Paris , namely Burgundy, Loire, Alsace, and Champagne. Bordeaux is a little further off but still attainable for a weekend trip.

Being the capital of France, a wine-loving nation, there are many wine-related tastings and tours that are either in the city or leave from the city. I’ll go into further details in the section that follows, where we look at the best winery tours in France.

Lavender field Provence France

Provence, found in the southeastern corner of France, borders Italy, the Alps, and of course, the Mediterranean Sea. It is a region that is known for sunshine, glamour, and delicious rosé wines. It has a rather unique and diverse landscape for travelling in Europe , from the warm Mediterranean sea all the way up to high, snow-capped peaks in the Alps. There are large limestone deposits further inland, which contribute fantastic minerality to the wines. The closer to the sea you get, these limestone deposits shift to more schist-based soils.

Generally speaking, the climate in Provence is hot and dry, with low rainfall levels which means that grapes tend to ripen quite quickly. There is also a strong, north-westerly wind known as the Mistral that blows through the region mainly in the winter.

The regions for French wine tours are subdivided into three main AOCs – Côte de Provence, Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence, and Coteaux Varois en Provence. Provence is most famously known for its crispy, onion-skin colored roses, made from varietals like Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Cinsault, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Red wines are also made from the same selection of varietals, either as blends or 100% components. White wines in the region are generally made from Semillon, Rolle, Clairette, and Ugni Blanc. Although whites and reds are produced, rosé is the most commonly produced wine and accounts for about 75% of the total production.

Rhône Valley

Rhone Valley France

The Rhône Valley, also found in south-eastern France, stretches from Lyon to the Camargue area close to the Mediterranean Sea – a stretch of about 150 miles. There are two parts to the region – the northern and southern Rhône, separated by a 25-mile gap between the towns of Valance and Montelimar.

The Northern Rhône experiences a more continental climate, and together with the granite-rich soils and more mountainous terrain, has a focus on quality. Syrah is almost exclusively grown in the Northern Rhône as the predominant red, while Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne are used for the production of white wines.

The southern Rhône has a more Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and little rainfall. The Mistral wind together with rockier and sandier soils, leads to the south producing larger quantities and a greater list of varietals. The south also uses Syrah as a blending component together with Grenache and Mourvèdre to produce the classic GSM red blend (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre). White varietals that are used in the south include Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, and Picpoul.

The notable AOCs within the Rhône Valley include the most famous Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, in the north, along with Cornas, Saint-Péray, Saint-Joseph, and Crozes-Hermitage. In the south, the most famous AOC by far is none other than Châteauneuf-du-Pape, along with Côtes du Rhône Villages.

Loire Valley

Loire Valley France

The Loire Valley stretches from the west coast of France and into the central region of the country, along the Loire River – a staggering 634 miles long! It is the third largest wine region in France, behind Bordeaux and Burgundy, and is a major producer of everyday wines.

The Loire Valley is known for a few things – firstly, the Sauvignon Blanc regions of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are found in the central parts of the country. Secondly, it is known for its Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc regions of Saumur, Anjou, and Vouvray towards the west coast. Lastly, the region of Muscadet near the city of Nantes. Gamay and Melon de Bourgogne are also produced in small quantities in the region.

The sheer size of the Loire Valley means that there are a variety of geographical changes as you head from the central regions, eventually reaching the Atlantic coastline. The vineyards closer to the ocean are largely grown on flat slopes with well-drained, rocky soils made up of granite and schist. The further inland you go, so too does the maritime climate fade somewhat but the terrain remains rather flat. There are a whole host of different soil types, from dark schist and limestone to flinty clay, gravel, and sand.

Notable AOCs in the Loire Valley include Saumur, Pays Nantais, Anjou, Touraine, Sancerre, Pouilly-Fume, and Côtes du Forez. The difference in soil, climate, and varietals means that there is a rather large variety of wines and styles produced in the Loire Valley, and it is often overshadowed by the obvious Bordeaux to the south.

Burgundy France

Found in the eastern-central area of France, Burgundy (aka Bourgogne) is one of the smallest wine regions for winery tours in France, but one that is highly influential in the wine world. Some of the world’s most expensive wines are produced in Burgundy, like Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or DRC as it’s commonly referred to. I loved staying in the very French Airbnbs around here.

Now, out of all the wine regions in France, Burgundy is probably the easiest to remember in terms of grape varietals grown. The primary focus in Burgundy is on Chardonnay (Bourgogne Blanc) and Pinot Noir (Bourgogne Rouge). You can also expect to find varietals of Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay, Aligoté, and Pinot Gris in much smaller quantities.

The landscape in Burgundy is characterized by gentle, rolling hills between 150m and 600m elevation, and wide river valleys. There are some higher peaks that hit the 900m mark such as in the Morvan, but generally speaking, it’s not a mountainous region. The climate in Burgundy is very much continental, with cold winters and hot summers.

The weather is somewhat unpredictable and it is common for the region to experience hail, rail, and frost during harvest time – not ideal! Soils are generally comprised of that sought-after limestone which imparts beautiful minerality that are a signature of Burgundian wines. Some of the most notable AOCs in the region include Chassagne-Montrachet, La Tâche, Chambertin, Meursault, Pommard, and Chablis.

Alsace France

Last but not least is Alsace, found in the northeastern corner of France. Now, Alsace has a rather interesting history as it has bounced between German and French rule in recent centuries. It now forms part of France and has done so since 1919 after the conclusion of World War I.

The region produces both white and red wines as well as sparkling wines known as Crémant. However, white wines make up the majority of wine produced in the area at a staggering 90% of production. The most common white varietals you’ll find on wine tours in the region include Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, Muscat Rose à Petits Grains, and Muscat Ottonel. Sylvaner is also grown in the region along with smaller quantities of Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, and Chasselas. The smaller quantities of red that is grown is predominantly Pinot Noir which was traditionally lighter in body and more rustic than those from Burgundy.

Alsace sits firmly between the Rhine River and the mountains of Vosges, with the vineyards predominantly on the lower hillside slopes of the Vosges. The vineyards are grown on a variety of soil types given the change in topography. On the flatter areas, there are mainly clay-based soils with a lot of limestone and marlstone, while the more mountainous areas feature granite, sandstone, and volcanic rock.

There are three AOCs that can be found in Alsace, making it one of the simpler French wine regions to understand. They are Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru, and Crémant d’Alsace.

The first stop is at one of the prestigious champagne houses in Epernay or Reims, which will differ daily depending on availability. But expect any one of the big names such as Mumm, Veuve Clicquot, Mercier, Moët & Chandon, Pommery, or Lanson.

A tasting in the middle of a vineyard is next, followed by a delicious lunch with, you guessed it, more Champagne! A digestive tour in the vineyards where you will learn all about the Champagne cultivars. The tour concludes with a visit to a family-run French winery which is rather different from the large Champagne houses. More bubbles follow, after which you will be driven back to continue your trip in Paris , as merry as can be!

Wine Tours in France: Where to Go Wine Tasting in the French Countryside

Wine tours in France are a great way to discover the incredibly rich and fertile vineyards that blanket the country and taste wines from prestigious wineries you’ve always dreamed of visiting.

As a food and wine lover, there’s no better treat than to visit the wineries that your favorite wines come from, and since France is the world’s epicenter of world-class wine, it’s highly likely that a few of your favorites are in France.

Philippe Grisard Winery

Whether you want to plan your own France wine tour or go along with a knowledgeable guide, a wine tour in France is the perfect vacation for wine lovers. Below you will find the top winemaking regions of France. Also check out this overview of the major French wine regions

We’ve done our best to provide you with information about how to get there, when to go and what wineries to try in each. You’ll also find a few recommended guided France wine tours to join if you’d rather leave the planning to someone else.

The best time to visit France’s wine regions is from April to October. It’s never really the off-season in France, but some some wineries will shut down to tourists and/or the towns won’t have as much to offer. We also try to avoid August. Harvesting takes place in late August and early September and that can be a very busy time for the wineries.

You’ll also find that there are a good number of wine festivals and fairs going on all through the high season, and visitors are always welcome.

Where to Go Wine Tasting in France

Colmar, France

The Alsace wine region is located on the border of France and Germany, which gives the wine produced there a slightly different twist than you might expect. The main grape varietals used are Gewurztraminer and Riesling, though the wine-making style is quite a bit more dry than Germany’s wine made with the same grape.

The Alsace wine route takes you through charming villages like Dambach-la-Ville, Ribeauvillé, Mittelbergheim and Riquewihr. Here is a wine map of the Alsace wine region for you to see and download . Because of its peaceful, easy terrain, the area is popular for cyclists and is one unique way you might consider for your Alsace wine tour.

If you want to see as much of Alsace as possible, you’ll need a car to drive from one end to the other, stopping at wine villages along the way to do wine tastings. If you start in Strasbourg, you can drive all or some of the 100+ miles down to Thann.

Another option would be to fly into Basel and start your journey at the southern end of the region. Alternatively, you could choose a middle ground and base yourself from there, while driving out to various wineries each day from your home base.

Colmar is the largest central location, but we like Hunawihr more because it’s quite charming, has lots of restaurants and dozens of wineries to visit nearby.

If you’re a wine lover, you’ve likely always wanted to visit Bordeaux , the wine capital of the world. Not only is Bordeaux reaching near mythical wine status, it has a fantastic blend of history, culture, and food that just can’t be rivaled. It’s one of the best wine tour destinations in France and perfect for wine lovers looking to expand their knowledge and palate for fine wines.

Due to the number of famous wine regions in Bordeaux on both the left bank and right bank of the river, you could easily stay for a whole week and not even begin to scratch the surface.

The top wine regions include Medoc ,  Haut Médoc ,  Saint-Estephe ,  Margaux ,  Saint Julien ,  Pauillac , and  Pessac-Leognan , Graves , Saint Emilion , and Pomerol . Each region has its own conglomeration of wineries and you will have to decide where to go and how many wineries you can make it to in a day.

It’s much easier to visit multiple wineries in Saint-Emillion, which has wineries placed much closer to together than Medoc. Pomerol and Graves are great areas to visit because competition to get in for wine tasting is less fierce, the pace is laid back, and the prices are often lower. Our recommendation would be to spend at least 2 full wine tasting days each in Medoc and Saint-Emillion.

You can do that easily on full-day guided wine tours leaving from the town of Bordeaux (which is central to both regions). It is less likely to be able to find a tour to the smaller areas. You’ll need a car to get around.

Vineyards of Burgundy

Speaking of wine capitals of the world, Burgundy (or Bourgogne, as it’s said in France) is another wine-lovers dream destination, especially for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fans. As one of the main regions for Old World wine, Burgundy is steeped in history.

The narrow valley in eastern France runs along a steep mountain range from Dijon in the north to Lyon in the south, encompassing several famous sub-regions:

  • Côte d’Auxerre (Chablis)
  • Côte de Nuits
  • Côte de Beaune
  • Côte Chalonnaise

Terroir is taken very seriously in Burgundy and labels are given to designate between the most prestigious plots of land, from Grand Cru vineyards, like Puligny-Montrachet, Pouilly Fuissé and Gevrey Chambertin, to village-specific appellations.

The wines produced in the best plots in Burgundy can bring in top dollar, and is considered to be some of the most prestigious wine in France.

You can visit any of the regions throughout Burgundy, but two of our favorites are Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. For a central location, you can base yourself in the charming city of Beaune and branch out to the various areas for wine-tasting day trips.

At the north end of the wine region is Dijon, which also makes a good home base for visiting the more northern wineries.

Veuve Clicquot Champagne

Champagne is one of the most famous wines in Europe, it’s not wonder adoring fans flock to this wine regions in France. The region is easy to reach from Paris and makes a great day trip for visitors to the city of romance. Many of the Champagne houses can be found in either Reims or Epernay .

In Reims you’ll find prestigious Champagne houses like  Veuve Clicquot and Tattinger . In Epernay you’ll find an array of tasting rooms along the Avenue de Champagne, including Moet et Chandon .

The Champagne region has been named a UNESCO World Heritage site. That, along with the beautiful rolling hillsides of vineyards, and the chance to taste some of the best Champagne in the world directly from the source is reason enough for us to visit.

You can make a visit to Reims and try plenty of Champagne to make you happy, but if you’re a dedicated wine lover, you’ll want to rent a car and drive from Reims down to Epernay.

It’s a very easy 30-min drive and there are cute little towns, vineyards, and more Champagne houses all along the way. We particularly enjoyed a stop in Hautvillers, which has enough wine and Champagne tasting to filled an entire day on its own.

Rhone Valley

Vineyards of Chusclan in Rhone Valley

For wine connoisseurs, the Rhone Valley is a little slice of paradise. Many of the French wines we love come from the Rhone Valley – like Côtes du Rhône , Hermitage , Côte-Rôtie , and Beaumes-de-Venise. The area is divided into two main sub regions – the northern and southern Rhone.

The northern sub-region produces red wines with the Syrah grape, and white wines from Marsanne, Roussane, and Viognier grapes.

The southern sub-region produces many different blends of reds, whites and roses. The Rhone Valley is where the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape is made. When planning a wine tasting trip, you’ll want to look to the Côtes du Rhône region first.

As with Burgundy, Côtes du Rhône has many different layers to their wine classification, which includes the basic AOC, villages, named villages and crus.

There are 21 villages that are allowed to be named on the bottle, along with 17 distinctive crus. Some of our favorites to look out for are  Châteauneuf-du-Pape ,  Côte-Rôtie and  Crozes-Hermitage .

Savoie Wine Region

Savoie vineyards

A smaller, lesser known wine region in France is the Savoie, stretching from Geneva, Switzerland down to the city of Chambery, France. The vineyards of Savoie are often planted on very steep slopes in order to maximize on the terroir and the sun. The region produces mostly white wines from the Altesse and Roussanne grapes, but you can also find the unique red Mondeuse, Pinot Noir and Gamay.

While wine tasting is the goal, a trip to Savoie also affords incredible views and opportunities for outdoor activities, like hiking, paragliding, and winter skiing. If you speak French, you’ll easily be able to set up your own wine tasting appointments with wineries in the area just by emailing in advance. However, if you don’t speak French, it can be more difficult. In this case, we recommend contacting a wine guide to show you around.

We can highly recommend Bernard Vissoud of  Alpes Flaveurs . He can set up any type of wine or food experience you wish. Be sure to stop by Philippe Grissard and Yves Girard Madoux , where you’ll find some of the best expressions of the wine in the Savoie region.

Jura wine region in France

From the longest to the smallest – The Jura is the smallest wine region in France. But it shouldn’t be overlooked. It’s located between Burgundy and Switzerland at the foothills of the Jura Mountains.

It contains only about 2,000 hectares of vineyards, but among those vineyards are a wine variety of grapes, many that you’ve probably not heard of before.

This variety leads to some unique and interesting wines that are different than the French wines you’re probably used to. That makes this region especially unique and interesting to wine lovers who want to try something new and different.

The five main grape varieties you’ll find in Jura are Pinot Noir, Poulsard, Trousseau, Chardonnay and Savagnin.

You’ll also find Vins jaunes, a dry “yellow” wine that is similar in characteristic to fino Sherry, however it’s not a fortified wine. It is made with the late harvested Savagnin grapes. To get to the Jura, you can fly into Lyon or Geneva. It’s about a 2-hour drive from either.

Loire Valley

Chateau de Chambord

Loire Valley wine region is the longest wine route in the country, stretching over 1000 kilometers along the Loire River in France. It’s not only well known for its incredible wine, but for the beautiful vineyards and Chateaux.

A trip through the Loire Valley will give you insight into many top wine designations, like Sancerre, Pouilly Fumé, and Vouvray.

Of course, it’s nearly impossible to see the entire valley in just one trip, especially since you’ll be sidetracked all along the way with fantastic activities and wineries to visit.

There are over 1000 wineries in the area that are open to visitors. Some of them are famous Chateaux that you must stop at. Many of them offer accommodations where you can stay among the vines, great wining and dining experiences, even the chance to pick grapes, participate in harvest, or make your own blend.

Just check around, you’ll find more things to do than you can possibly fit into your itinerary.

The prominent grapes in the Loire Valley are Cabernet Franc, Gamay, Chenin Blanc, and Melon de Bourgogne. The styles of wine vary as much as the terroir along the river. Villages you’ll want to visit include Touraine, Bourgeuil, Nantes, Chinon, Savennières, Saumur and Anjou.

A village in Provence, France

If you’re a rose wine drinker, you will love the Provence wine regions , which is often overlooked. At least 80% of the wine production in Provence is rose. Wine has been made in this region for over 2,600 years, making it one of the oldest wine regions in France.

It’s location on the Mediterranean gives it perfect growing conditions for many varieties of grapes. In Provence there are 9 AOC regions, the largest being the Côtes de Provence.

The second largest is perhaps best known for its rose production: Coteaux d’Aix en Provence. Here, a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Syrah and Counoise grapes are used to gain that perfect balance. A good place to base yourself in Provence for wine tasting is the city of Marseille.

Côte d'Azur - French Riviera Food and Wine

Sur les routes de Ramatuelle, dans le golfe de Saint-Tropez

Reading time: 0 min Published on 25 March 2024, updated on 15 April 2024

Even in December, the sun is shining in the Côte d’Azur: this is the ideal spot for some winter sunshine! From Mouans-Sartoux, it's only an hour's drive to the Gulf of Saint-Tropez for a wine tour, where a vast array of wine estates welcome visitors. Come along and see for yourself on a tour guided by Laura and Timothé of the Takatoukiter blog!

The Château Volterra in Ramatuelle

Le Château Volterra à Ramatuelle, dans le golfe de Saint-Tropez.

Start the day with the Château Volterra in Ramatuelle, which was an unmissable stopping place for many celebrities including Josephine Baker , Marcel Pagnol and Jean Cocteau in the 1930s and 1940s.

What's instantly beguiling about the estate is the majestic stone building and the breathtaking view of the Mediterranean. Unfortunately, the castle is not open to visitors*—luckily, the estate is. Start the the tasting and explore not only the regional darling, rosé, but also amazing red wines (which represent 65% of the production here).

If you really want to see the castle, Françoise has given us two solutions: either get married there or watch the upcoming film Do you do you Saint-Tropez planned for 2021 with Christian Clavier.

Le château Volterra

The Château Barbeyrolles in Gassin

Le Château Barbeyrolles à Gassin, dans le golfe de Saint-Tropez.

Continue the walk towards the Château Barbeyrolle in Gassin. Régine Sumeire, the owner of the castle (and of the Château Tour de l'Évêque also) is the creator of the well known clear rosé of the region in 1985, launching the "Pétale de Rose," the first of the clear rosés of Provence.

Nowadays you're more likely to run into Hélène, who works at the château all year round and organizes the tastings of pleasant rosés and even more pleasant conversation. The castle has been certified organic since 2005 and is in the process of being Demeter certified. They work regularly with local restaurateurs, as well as in the rest of France and abroad. Régine is even a star in Canada!

End the visit with a walk outside—everything from the building, the garden and the sunshine is gorgeous.

Le Château Barbeyrolles Le Château de la Tour de l’Évêque

The Château Garcinières in Cogolin

Le Château des Garcinières à Cogolin, dans le golfe de Saint-Tropez.

Then, head towards Cogolin. At the end of a majestic avenue of plane trees, you'll arrive at the Château Garcinières. When you arrive you'll be greeted by Mélissa, the owner's granddaughter, who lives in this beautiful building (which is sadly not a bed and breakfast—given the beauty of the place, the question comes up very often).

Here, 70 to 80% of the wine produced is rosé, but red and white wines are also available. There is also a charming cellar to taste the wine, as well as delicious regional products: honeys, tapenades and jams from the Maison des confitures in Gassin which produces more than 400 varieties.

As you chat, you can sense that her passion for this special spot. She'll regale you with tales of her family, which used to work in wood, especially cork oak, and also created the old Marseille soap boxes before the arrival of cardboard.

Come fall in love with this former monastery, where everything is beautiful, especially the earthenware wall that was built to protect from the strong east winds.

Le Château des Garcinières

The Château Saint-Maur in Cogolin

Le Château Saint-Maur à Cogolin, dans le golfe de Saint-Tropez.

End the day at Château Saint-Maur, still in Cogolin, and explore an estate of another dimension lying on over 60 hectares (148 acres), with a production of 320,000 to 350,000 bottles a year.

The Château Saint-Maur is one of the most luxurious in the region, with an exceptional plot of land which happens to be the highest in the Côtes de Provence appellation. This is where the "Clos de Capelune" cuvée was born, notably served at the Martinez in Cannes, the George V in Paris and the Sénéquier in Saint-Tropez.

Le Château Saint-Maur à Cogolin

The Château Saint-Roux in Cannet-des-Maures

Le Château Saint-Roux au Cannet-des-Maures

Before returning home, take a short break in an incredible spot: the Château Saint-Roux!

The goal of the owner (who is also the owner of the Bertrands castle, Ultimate Provence and even the Château de Berne) was to recreate a "farmhouse atmosphere of yesteryear" and the least we can say is that his dream was not only realized, but with great taste.

All the decoration is perfectly suited to the estate—it's hard not to take the camera out in every room! The table, the shop, the animals, the vegetable garden, the terrace overlooking the vineyards— everything is beautiful.

The owner also seeks to be, in the long run, self-sufficient. Fittingly, a baker will arrive in the spring; almost all the water comes from the estate; the goats produce between 2 and 5 litres (.5 to about 1.5 gallons) of milk a day, which becomes delicious fresh or matured cheese; the 3,800 m² (40,902 ft²) vegetable garden allows the chef to work with fresh, seasonal produce; then there are also the fruit trees, olive trees and of course the vines—in short, a small local and organic paradise exists on the very grounds of the château.

Why take a wine tour in France?

France is synonymous with many things, including romance and art, but for many, France is about sensational food and world-beating wines. There are many quantitative metrics that tell us France leads the way when it comes to wine:

  • In 2017, France exported wine worth more than $10bn, 50% more than Italy who came in second
  • France is rarely out of the top two in terms of global wine production
  • The most expensive bottle of wine ever sold (a cool $558,000) was French

However, mere numbers cannot accurately portray the important role wine plays in French accomplishment, nor the significance of French wine to the rest of the world. Wine is a driving force in day-to-day French culture. In terms of the global outlook, few would disagree that France produces the best, most sought-after wines.

Many European nations, from Italy to England and Switzerland to Spain, produce great wines, but at the very top end, it’s hard to argue that one could better France’s top wines from Champagne, Bordeaux and Burgundy.

Of course, this isn’t a competition and, in truth, it is impossible – not to mention rather pointless – to compare “French wine” and “Italian wine”. There is simply so much variety within the wines produced by both countries, not to mention other producing nations, in terms of grape varieties, terroir, style, price range and so on.

There is, indeed, so much variety even within France itself, in large part due to the country’s size. At more than 550,000 square kilometres, mainland France is larger than Italy and the UK combined and it is easily the biggest country in Western Europe.

The relatively cool climate and chalky, limestone soil of Champagne helps produce very different wine to the endless sun and warmth of the Languedoc-Roussillon region in the south. France boasts so much variety in terms of terroir, weather and topography that it is able to produce many different styles of wine, and indeed this is a large part of the appeal for many oenophiles.

The Key Wine Regions of France

Wine tours in France wine regions

You could spend months touring France and barely scratch the surface of its many treasures. There are well over 300 different Appellations d’Origine Protégée (AOP) wine areas within France but it is easier instead to consider the major regions.

The city of Bordeaux lies on the Garonne River and the region is situated in the west of France on the Atlantic. Bordeaux is most famous – from a wine perspective – for its big, powerful reds which are great food wines, although it also produces other styles, including probably the most famous sweet wine in the world, Sauternes .

Champagne is a much smaller region than Bordeaux and is situated about 100 miles east of Paris. The acidity and body of the wine that is a byword for celebration and luxury, make it a surprisingly good match with food, especially for those fortunate enough to stretch to a bottle of vintage Champagne. To see our Champagne tasting tours, click here .

Burgundy has a greater number of individual AOPs than any other region in the country and these span both red and white wines, making this a great option for a wine holiday in France. Best known for Pinot-Noir-based reds, it is certainly worth sampling the also fantastic white Burgundies, which often utilise Chardonnay grapes. Wines such as Chablis, Pouilly-Fuisse and Meursault are elegant, refined choices that showcase the versatility of Chardonnay.

Languedoc-Roussillon is the most southerly region in France and boarders Spain and the Mediterranean Sea. With well over 700,000 acres of vines, it is three times the size of Bordeaux in terms of the area of planted vines and it produces rich, ripe reds thanks to its over 300 days of sun each year.

Alsace is a region in east France near the Swiss and German borders and is one of the smaller French wine regions. The Alsace region produces almost exclusively white wines, although a small quantity of pale red and rosé is also made. Those looking for excellent value fizz will find Crémant d’Alsace a real treat, whilst the whites tend to be aromatic and subtly satisfying.

The Loire Valley is around 170 miles in length, stretching down the central part of the river of the same name. Located in northern, central France, this wine region produces some of the greatest white wines around. Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are fantastic ways for lovers of New World Sauvignon Blancs to glide across to French wine. Made from the same grape, these Loire Valley wines are less grassy but offer greater minerality, and they pair superbly with seafood.

Provence and the Rhône

Provence is on the south coast of France and includes Marseille and Toulon. Famed for its sun, lavender and unparalleled rosé wine, Provence is one of France’s most popular wine holiday destinations. Producing reds and whites too, the region has much to offer and that’s before we even consider the Rhône.

North of Provence, the Rhône is actually a large area. It produces Syrah- and Grenache-based reds of great richness that go brilliantly with food, such as the globally famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Wine has been grown here since 600 BC, and in more than 2500 years of winemaking, superb whites have been produced too, utilising Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne grapes.

How to plan a wine holiday in France

Choose which region you would like to visit, the wines that suit your palate, how you would like to travel and the type of accommodation that would suit you.

  • You could unwind in a boutique hotel in Bordeaux or a private château in the Languedoc!
  • Maybe you would prefer a  self-drive wine holiday, combining two regions, the Loire Valley and Bordeaux for example, or Burgundy and Champagne?
  • Or a luxury Eurostar escape discovering the charm of Châteauneuf-du-Pape for a magical French wine tour in the Rhône Valley.
  • Do you prefer a Pinot Noir with silky tannins and complex favours from Burgundy, or the boldest and most tannic of Bordeaux   wines with Cabernet Sauvignons from the Médoc?

Your reviews.

“I just want to say how much we loved our tour with Provence Wine Tours. Our guide looked after our every need and was incredibly knowledgeable of the wine making process. All three wineries offered a different experience and all were friendly and welcoming. Cassis is a quaint seaside village as you promised and the overlook was outstanding-so glad our guide took us to the top! Thanks again for your services. We would highly recommend your company to anyone inquiring” –  Brad Yungblut

“Nothing short of amazing! From the first communication with the team. They were so quick to respond and provide different options for tours. To our wonderful tour guide. We can not say enough about him. He was so knowledgeable, and took the time to explain the different wines to us and showed us around the vineyards. We loved our stop at le Castelet such a great little village tucked away with cute stores. And lunch in Cassis was delicious. Probably the best meal we had on our entire vacation! Such an enjoyable day all around. »  –  Joseph Esoff

Perfect wine tour!

We had an amazing time on this tour! My fiancé and I have been on several wine tours in the United States and were interested to learn more about French wines, in particular wines from Provence. This tour was exactly what we hoped for! Our guide was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. He provided helpful background information about classification of French wines and then introduced us to wine making in Provence. We went to 3 vineyards – all were excellent and different!!! We really enjoyed the variety, and we were able to taste white, rosé, and red wines at each site (and Peter kindly showed us how to taste the wines properly). The town we stopped in for lunch was also enjoyable with multiple food options across different price ranges. Overall, we had a fantastic time and would highly recommend this tour to others looking for a more intimate introduction to the wines of Provence . Ptwice24 .

“Loved our wine tour around Sainte Victoire mount – the limestone mountains were incredible. Fantastic host, knowledgeable, friendly and loves to have a laugh. Wineries were superb and a great representation of the area. 10/10 – I only wish we could’ve stayed longer!! » –   Brendan Garlick

An experience not to be missed.

We did a private full day wine tour of the Chateauneuf-du-Pape region. We were a group of 12, and had an absolutely brilliant day. The tour was well organised, guides were delightful & informative. They were very flexible too in letting us have input in certain vineyards that members of our group wanted to visit. The transport was comfortable, and a plus was that they could arrange delivery of the wine back to our home countries. Highly recommend and a tour not to be missed if you are in the region! Aveens

A highlight of our trip!

My husband and I were very happy with our wine tour experience! It was so nice to be in a small group where we could ask lots of questions and get a more personal experience. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable and shared so much information about the wine, the area, and the culture. The wineries we went to, were absolute gorgeous–beautiful views and delicious wine. What more could you ask for? We came with very little background knowledge of the wine making process so it was so fascinating to hear all about it. This tour was one of our favorite excursions and I would definitely recommend it, as it is fun, informative, and an amazing value! Katie F.

Amazing trip!

Our guide was amazing, and the crew was fun! We learned a lot and got to escape the city for a day! We visited 3 vineyards and enjoyed every minute. Donald D

Alsace’s family vineyards and larger estates alike contribute to a rich mosaic of wine styles, from dry Rieslings to sweet late harvest wines. The half-timbered buildings, narrow streets, and medieval towns like Strasbourg and Colmar speak volumes about this past, offering a glimpse into a rich culture that complements the wine tasting experience.

Travel Logistics & Planning Your Trip to and Around the Alsace Wine Region

When planning your journey to Alsace, the region’s accessibility via various airports and cities is a key consideration. Strasbourg Airport (SXB) is the most convenient gateway, located just 10 kilometers southwest of Strasbourg’s city center. This airport serves a range of domestic and European flights, making it a prime choice for travelers aiming to explore Alsace’s wine region.

For a broader selection of flights, including transcontinental routes, the EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg , about 120 kilometers from Strasbourg, is an excellent option. This unique airport, operated jointly by France and Switzerland, offers extensive connectivity. Additionally, the Baden-Baden Airport (FKB) in Germany , approximately 60 kilometers from Strasbourg, presents a viable alternative for Winetravelers, particularly those arriving from European destinations. Check current flight deals into any of these airports and book your flight with Skyscanner to ensure you’re getting the best price for your travel dates.

Once in Alsace, there are several options available to explore its charming villages and lush vineyards. Renting a car provides the utmost flexibility, allowing travelers to meander through the scenic routes at their own pace and schedule. Major car rental companies are conveniently located at the airports and major train stations, offering a range of vehicles to suit different preferences.

For those preferring public transport, the region is well-connected by an efficient network of trains and buses. The French national railway company, SNCF, operates train services connecting major towns and cities in Alsace. The local TER (Transport Express Régional) trains are a reliable and scenic way to travel between smaller towns and villages. Buses complement the train network, with services like Lignes Interurbaines d’Alsace (LIA) connecting more remote areas. These buses are a budget-friendly option and offer a unique way to experience the local landscape and culture, but are a little more restrictive compared to renting a car.

When to Visit Alsace

Beyond transportation, there are other practical aspects to consider for a trip to Alsace. The region has a temperate climate, with the best time to visit being from May to October , when the weather is most favorable for vineyard tours and outdoor activities.

France is home to some of the world’s best wines, and its vast wine regions produce between seven to eight billion bottles a year, accounting for close to 30 percent of the world’s wine output. The rich soil, known as terroir in French, idyllic weather conditions, strict government standards, and centuries of perfecting growing, aging, and bottling techniques, is why French wine is so highly revered. Burgundy, Bordeaux, Provence, Champagne, and the Loire are the main wine regions of France and produce the best wines.

Wine aficionados usually have France on the top of their list for wine tours, and we have collected a list of the best wine tours in France for their pleasure.

Based in Dijon, Authentica Wine Tours specializes in tours of the Burgundy region, where some of the most exclusive and expensive French wines come from. Authentica was created in 2008 by Nicolas Guidard, a Burgundy native whose father and grandfather worked the land. He wanted to share his love and knowledge of Burgundy and its fine wines and cuisine. Over the years, Guidard hired experts in wine, geology, culture, and history to round out the company and introduce innovative tours that weren’t done before.

Authentica offers private and small group tours, with half-day, full-day, and multi-day excursions and prices ranging from 65 euros per person for the half-day group tour to a 2-day private tour for 1,180 euros for two people.

The most prestigious tour is the 1-day Grand Crus, The Best Of Burgundy , which includes the top Burgundy wines with an option to taste 6, 10, and the ultimate indulgence, 15, and a three-course lunch and cheese course, at the estate of an esteemed Burgundy wine vintner. Other tours on their list include the full-day Passion tour, which is a visit to the city and surrounding area of Beaune, with tastings of five to seven red and white wines, the full-day Burgundy Gourmet with a tasting of up to 14 wines, five culinary sites featuring cheese, chocolate, charcuteries, and pastries, and a Burgundy cuisine lunch either prepared by a private chef or at a Michelin star restaurant.

All tours use late-model luxury vans with air conditioning.

Airport transfers, a concierge, and wine shipping are some of the other services Authentica can provide.

Exploring Wine Regions

Michael C. Higgins from Pasadena, California, has tirelessly pursued the best wine regions in France and worldwide for more than 20 years. The Exploring Wine Regions website also lists a free eBook with insider wine secrets.

Bordeaux Wine Trails

The highly-rated Bordeaux Wine Trails (they won the 2020 Travelers Choice badge on TripAdvisor) provides wine and gourmet experiences of the well-renowned Bordeaux region. The morning and afternoon half-day group tours (5 hours) include a brief tour of the village of Saint Emilion, a visit to a Grand Cru or Grand Cru Classe winery, and either a special wine and dark chocolate tasting pairing or a tasting of local delicacies. From April to September, a half-day Medoc wine tour is available for Cabernet fans, which includes a tour of a Margaux or St Julien winery and a Cru Bourgeois wine tasting accompanied with locally grown produce. The cost of the half-day group tours is 72 to 85 euros per person.

Bordeaux Wine Trails can also plan full-day, private tours to explore either the Saint Emilion or Medoc regions. The Saint Emilion tour consists of pick-up and return to your hotel or location, a visit to a Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classe estate for a tour and tasting, lunch at an authentic brasserie, a walk through the village of Saint Emilion, a tasting at Grand Cru winery, followed by a visit to a Pomerol wine estate. The Medoc tour includes visits to wineries in either the Saint Julien or Saint Estephe region, Pauillac, and the Margaux area with lunch at either a restaurant or a picnic on a wine estate grounds. Custom itineraries are also offered at Bordeaux Wine Trails.

The O’Chateau full-day (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.) small group Champagne tour includes transportation to and from Paris in a late model, air-conditioned van with an expert and personable sommelier leading the tour. The experience consists of three guided visits to various Champagne houses and their cellars and facilities. The first visit is to a major Champagne house, where you go underground to the deep chalk caves and learn about the process of making Champagne from grape to glass. The second visit is to a private Champagne house where you also have a lunch feast in their dining room. The last visit is to a smaller Champagne house. The tour also includes three Champagne tastings at each location and coffee and croissants in the van for breakfast. Tours can also be privatized.

While in Paris, enjoy wine tastings and classes at the handsome wine bar and private rooms at O’Chateau, conveniently located near the Louvre.

Loire Valley

Vincent Delaby worked in the tourism sector for 15 years before embarking on a new career inspired by his family heritage, wine tours. He first developed his wine expertise and craft by working in wine cellars and vineyards, followed by wine tourism training and receiving a Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) certificate.

Delaby’s company, VinoLoire , provides various half-day and full-day Loire wine tours for small groups and private tours. The half-day excursions go to either the Vouvray and Montlouis regions in the morning or the Chinon and Azay Touraine in the afternoon. Visits include tastings of red, white, and rose wines, paired with local cheeses and charcuterie, an explanation of the winemaking process, and a walk through the vineyards. Full-day tours go to the same locations as the half-day tours and then extend to the Sancerre and Pouilly regions. Full-day tours can be arranged from Paris.

VinoLoire offers other fun activities in the Loire in addition to the wine tours, including cooking lessons, cheese and wine pairings, food and market visits, a chateau tour with a certified historian, and a wine tasting cruise on an authentic wood boat.

Kanpai Tourisme

Various areas.

Specializing in tours of Lyon and regions nearby, Kanpai Tourisme has an impressive list of small group and private wine tours. The Macon and Beaujolais areas produce some of the best Chardonnay and Gamay wines, including Macon Villages, Pouilly Fuisse, St Veran, Fleurie, Brouilly, and Moulin-a-Vent. On the full-day Macon and Beaujolais tour , from 9 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., you are first driven through the Macon Route des Vins road with magnificent scenery and Solutre Roch, a 1,600-foot-tall natural boulder made of limestone. The tastings begin with a selection of white wines from a family estate in the Pouilly Fuisse village, while you learn about the wine-making and barrel-aging process of Chardonnay. After the tasting, lunch is at a bistro with Beaujolais cuisine (lunch is not included in the tour price). In the afternoon, you will experience another scenic ride through the Beaujolais wine roads. You will then visit another family-owned winery producing Beaujolais wine, which uses Gamay grapes, followed by tastings of “crus” red wines.

The Northern Cote du Rhone wine region is the source of the much-beloved Shiraz and Syrah wines such as Cote Rotie, Condrieu, and Saint-Joseph. Kanpai Tourisme offers a half-day Shiraz and Syrah tour consisting of visits to two wineries and five to six tastings at each.

Chateauneuf Du Pape Wine Tour

The much-celebrated Chateauneuf du Pape wine is one of the oldest wines in the world, dating back from the Gallo-Roman period from the first century to the fifth century. The private Chateauneuf du Pape Tour from Planet Provence provides a historic look at the region with a highly trained wine guide plus tastings. The guide will pick you up and return you to your location within a 6-mile radius of Aix en Provence.

Owner Brice de Monplanet and his wife have made Provence their home since 1997, and Brice had an impressive career for 15 years working for international wine companies. Then he switched gears, training in oenology at the prestigious Montpellier Ludivinum School. Continuing with his passion for wine, he started Planet Provence.

A Scenic Road

Xavier Cabanne grew up in Paris then moved to the Chicago area as an adult. A few years ago, Cabanne reconnected with his love of France and started A Scenic Road , a company that plans private, customized tours of France for small groups. In 1898, Cabanne’s great-great-grandmother started a small winery in the Burgundy region, and it’s still in operation today. With his vast insider knowledge of wine, Cabanne can design a perfect wine tour of Burgundy, Champagne, and Bordeaux with tastings at smaller and less known wine producers. In addition, A Scenic Road can also organize fun activities such as countryside bike rides, mustard factory tours, wine museum visits, and dinners at a Michelin star restaurant.

Pro Tip: Wearing flat, covered shoes or sneakers is highly recommended, and also bring a jacket or sweater even in summer because the wine cellars are cold and damp.
