In 2003, noted author (and personal hero) Harlan Ellison chided me for saying that the reprinting of some of his short stories was "awesome." "The Grand Canyon is 'awesome,'" he shouted theatrically. "The Heavenly Cosmos are 'awesome!' This? Maybe interesting. But definitely not 'awesome!'"

I thought about that definition of "awesome" as I watched the 45-minute cut of writer/director Terrence Malick's cosmic nature documentary "Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience." Malick's film, a combination of gorgeous documentary footage and vividly detailed computer-generated imagery, is majestic but so broad in its scope that I left it feeling like I'd seen something beautiful whose spark of genius only lasted as long as it was in front of my eyes. Malick's idiosyncratic marriage of spiritual speculation and nature photography is frequently amazing. But altogether awesome? Not quite.

Narrated throughout by Brad Pitt , "Voyage of Time" starts at the beginning of time and ends with the demise of the world as we know it. We see swirling nebulae, smoky volcanoes and multiplying bacteria while Pitt tells us about the "restless" character of life. 

Malick has an elemental view of life's origins, so Pitt offers general poetic speculations instead of specific information about what we're looking at. He suggests, in his placating authorial whisper, that "Nature" is constantly perfecting life on Earth. "Death" pushes Life along towards "Perfection." "Community" leads to the individual "Self," and we witness a vast array of crabs piling onto and climbing over each other. Life teems with mysterious "Goodness" as translucent white jellyfish float gently towards the water's surface.

There's something fundamentally sanitized about this dreamy, placid view of life. Ellison once said that life was a series of confrontations. But Love unites Malick's world, as we see when two blue whales hover near each other. And we are just like the dinosaurs, since we also have the capacity to feel affection for each other and, yes, to feel awe. 

But there is no violence in Malick's world, just a cycle of becoming that comes to an end for one large fish after he's bitten by a sea lion. Herons dive deep into the ocean and pick at a school of fish, who rally in unison to escape. Life thrives, just as Malick insists that "dark" is necessarily "bound" to "light." We see humanity in a flurry of images at the end of this cut of "Voyage of Time," because our story is the same as the story of growing trees, cooling Earth, and the catastrophic meteor that salted the Earth with plant-killing ash. Or at least, that's what an introductory scrolling text suggests when it tells us that we are seeing ourselves when we examine the objects and animals in the film.

I struggle with Malick's expressive, supra-human vision of life because its philosophy is bound up in its simultaneously pat and viscerally enchanting expression. I knew something was off when footage of computer-generated dinosaurs left me cold. Similar dino footage used in Malick's majestic " The Tree of Life ," a superior companion film that shares footage and a general outlook with "Voyage of Time," felt genuinely mysterious because of contextualizing footage. The narration is similarly nuanced in that earlier film while it is purposefully simplified in "Voyage of Time." These two films provide fundamentally different viewing experiences: "The Tree of Life" pulls you along with the speed and variety of life as it's experienced from a God's eye view while "Voyage of Time" summarizes that perspective, putting it in terms that a "child" could understand. We are all "children of the Good," we are told, because we are just another part of Nature's constant yearning for Perfection. 

Still, it is exciting to see such a personal theological vision writ large on an IMAX screen. Who else but Malick could make me puzzle over the meaning of a description of a "pre-mammalian" quadruped lizard creature? What other documentarian would revel in the unfathomable passage of time while also presuming to speak of a Natural plan? What other storyteller would have the audacity to make a cinematic poem that's largely comprised of documentary footage, and bookended by simulated versions of the Big Bang and Earth's destruction? What's my problem anyway?

I don't know how to answer that last question, but I can tell you something Ellison wrote, this time in a 1980 issue of  Future Life . In a column later anthologized in his  An Edge in My Voice  essay collection, Ellison rhapsodizes eloquently about the Voyager I mission. He was awed, then crestfallen at the thought of the news cycle concentrating on the war between Iran and Iraq, and not NASA's latest photographs and speculations about the spokes on Saturn's rings. "Ain't we a wonderful species," he muses sarcastically after reveling for thousands of words in the thrill of discovery, and the shock of the new provided by NASA's scientists. I didn't need "Voyage of Time" to confirm my spiritual point-of-view to be great: I just wish it were a little less flat. As it is, Malick's film feels incomplete, like a sampler platter version of a hearty meal. Awesome? Maybe not. But intriguing? Oh my yes.

Voyage of Time review – Terrence Malick awestruck in the face of existence

Malick’s mood-footnote to The Tree of Life sets visions of the dawn of the universe and mankind against a ludicrously solemn Brad Pitt voiceover

F ive years after it was first shown at the Venice film festival, Terrence Malick’s 45-minute docu-meditation about the dawn of time, nature and humankind finally gets a release in the UK on streaming platform Mubi.

With its bold images of the natural world and occasional dinosaur-fantasy sequences, accompanied by a sonorous voiceover from Brad Pitt, this was always conceived by the director as a standalone project but is effectively a kind of adjunct or mood-footnote to his award-winning 2011 experimental epic The Tree of Life . That had many of the same preoccupations and imagery, but crucially a smaller-scale human component, the story of a 1950s Texas family which gave the cosmic effusions a filmic immediacy and relevance.

A longer feature-length version of Voyage of Time was made, but slightly mystifyingly it is specifically this shorter version, intended for Imax theatres, which is being released now and what was undoubtedly a spectacular Imax event is left looking pretty exposed on the small screen. There is nothing here we haven’t seen on David Attenborough’s programmes, and Attenborough’s witty, informative and unobtrusive commentary feels more to the point now than Pitt who at one moment gasps: “What is nature? The inexhaustible giver …” Blandly calling nature “inexhaustible” is very naive given the climate crisis.

That said: there is nothing necessarily absurd in Malick’s awe and Heideggerian astonishment in the face of the inexplicable vastness and complexity of existence, his style is still urgent and distinctive and his question is perfectly valid: “Why is there something rather than nothing?” But without the dramatic dimension that Malick created for The Tree of Life, this feels platitudinous: the kind of presentation that might be shown to parties of schoolchildren at the Science Museum.

„Was ist Zeit …?“, raunte Udo Jürgens’ Stimme beschwörend, in die Rolle eines Kindes schlüpfend, das seiner Mutter Löcher in den Bauch fragt über die Beschaffenheit der Welt. Auf dem Fernsehschirm war dazu eine Zeitreise vom Urknall bis zum Weltuntergang im Schnelldurchlauf zu sehen. Dem Vorspann der französischen Zeichentrickserie Es war einmal … der Mensch ( Il était une fois… l’Homme , 1978) folgte ich als Kind begeistert Woche für Woche; besonders angetan aber hatte es mir die erste Folge, „Eine neue Welt entsteht“ , die sich, dem Seriennamen zum Trotz, weniger unserer Spezies widmete, als die Entstehung der Erde und die Entwicklung des Lebens bunt nachzumalen, bevor am Ende die ersten noch sehr zotteligen Menschen aufrechten Ganges ins Bild tappten und Feuer machten. Der streng der Wissenschaft verpflichteten Serie gelang es in einem Handstreich, mir religiöse Flausen auszutreiben und mich zugleich mit dem erhabenen Gefühl einer Zeugenschaft des Weltanfangs zu erfüllen.

Zeugenschaft des Weltanfangs

Voyage of Time , ein Film mit demselben Sujet wie diese erste Folge, hat 40 Jahre später und um viele wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse, technische und ästhetische Möglichkeiten reicher, also leichtes Spiel, bei mir anzudocken – selbst wenn mein Sitznachbar über das Pathos des Ganzen immer wieder leise aufstöhnt, gerade als hätte er nicht gewusst, worauf er sich hier einlässt. Ähnlich wie bei The Tree of Life (2010) war über Voyage of Time im Vorfeld zu hören, er sei ein Lebensprojekt des Regisseurs Terrence Malick, auf dessen Umsetzung er schon seit Jahrzehnten hinarbeite. Beide Filme stehen auch insofern in enger Verwandtschaft, als man Letzteren als eine extended version der berühmten Welterschaffungssequenz betrachten könnte, die im Ersteren das Familiendrama vor einen buchstäblich universalen Hintergrund stellte. Im bis in die Gestaltung einzelner Einstellungen hinein gleichen Stil wird in Voyage of Time nun also die Geschichte des Universums vom Anbeginn bis zum Zeitenende selbst der Gegenstand. Die Zeugenschaft dessen, was kein Mensch je sah, suggeriert der Film in einem so kurzen wie kühnen Close-up auf ein sich öffnendes menschliches Auge kurz nach dem Urknall.

Vom Abstrakten ins Konkrete

Die bunt wabernden Schlieren der Filamente und Voids; das junge Sonnensystem als dunkles Trümmerfeld mit glühendem Zentrum; die von Kometen bombardierte und von Lavaströmen überzogene Ur-Erde; blubbernde Quellen an noch unbelebten Ufern; Meerestiefen, in denen sich knallgelbe Moleküle zu Zellen verklumpen und Mehrzeller zu Quallenschwärmen; knutschende Fische; einsam übers Land kreuchende Saurier, denen ein Asteroid – beobachtet aus einer Felsnische mit Panoramameerblick – ein Ende macht: Salopp könnte man von einer BBC-Doku mit mehr Sinn für Ästhetik sprechen; ein mitreißender Transformationsflow vor allem in der ersten Hälfte und ihrer Betrachtung der Makro- und Mikrostrukturen der Welt, ein Fluss, der allerdings, je mehr er sich vom Abstrakten ins Konkrete begibt und je näher er dem Auftritt des Menschen kommt, in eine immer konventionellere Bildsprache mündet. Nach Naturaufnahmen von Leoparden, Elefanten und Schimpansen folgen wir schließlich einer CGI-Gruppe menschlicher Jäger und Sammler; wohlgeformte, athletische Männer- und Frauenkörper, deren Geschlechtsteile auch bei Full-Frontal-Aufnahmen stets schamhaft im Schatten versteckt bleiben. In wenigen Szenen wird der Mensch als ein lachendes, sich an Schönheit erfreuendes, seine Toten betrauerndes, sich im Spiegelbild eines Flusses erkennendes Wesen vorgestellt.

Kontrastiv in den elegischen Bilderbogen hineingeschnitten sind an einigen Stellen grobkörnige Dokumentaraufnahmen von Menschenaufläufen rund um den Globus; Bilder von Armut und Aufruhr, von Feiern und Ritualen; wie um das Hier und Jetzt mit dem großen Ganzen assoziativ zu verknüpfen. Eine These diktieren möchte der Film dabei aber nicht. Wenn er gegen Ende von frühen städtischen Siedlungen an Felswänden direkt ins nächtliche Dubai schneidet und auf den Burj Khalifa als majestätisches Zentrum zufährt, kann das ebenso gut als Bebilderung menschlicher Hybris wie als ungebrochenes Weiterschwelgen im Erhabenen gelesen werden; mit der Zivilisationsfeindlichkeit, die Geoffrey Reggios Koyaanisqatsi (1982) so schwer erträglich machte, hat Voyage of Time wenig gemein.

Mutter antwortet nicht

Stattdessen nimmt Cate Blanchetts Voice-over hier die Rolle des seine Mutter mit Fragen löcherndes Kindes ein, in mehreren über den Film verteilten mehrminütigen Intervallen, ein vor Anbeginn der Zeiten einsetzendes Raunen: Mutter, wo bist du? Wohin führst du mich? O Mutter, Abgrund des Lebens, alles erhellend – werden wir ewig zusammen sein? Wohin bist du gegangen, warum schweigst du? (In der mir leider nicht bekannten 40-minütigen IMAX-Fassung des Films soll Brad Pitt im Voice-over „more explanatory“ sein.) Die Fragen klingen so diffus gewichtig, wie sie sich lesen, und können die Zuschauernerven durchaus strapazieren – wie es überhaupt leicht ist, sich über den heiligen Ernst, mit denen der Film sich ungeschützt den Fragen nach dem Leben, dem Universum und dem ganzen Rest hingibt, zu mokieren.

Wenn man sich indes auch als areligiöser Zuschauer auf Terrence Malicks’ Spiritualität einlassen kann, hat das nicht zuletzt mit der für alle seine Filme zentralen Spannung zwischen Bild und Voice-over zu tun. Zwar bildet beides in Voyage of Time eine atmosphärische Einheit, oder eine sich in ihrer Bedeutsamkeit gegenseitig aufladende Zweiheit. Doch ist der Film, der im Abspann einen riesigen naturwissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiterstab aufführt, bei aller Schönheitstrunkenheit durchaus um eine State-of-Science-Darstellung der Ereignisse bemüht und füllt unbeantwortete Fragen – etwa der nach dem Sprung von organischen Verbindungen zum Leben – nicht mit Spekulation. Das Göttliche tritt nicht von sich aus in Erscheinung, das Voice-over trägt das Spirituelle als Bedürfnis an die Bilder heran, die Stimme eines sich nach Zuwendung und Sinn sehnenden Bewusstseins. Doch der wie auch immer geartete Ursprung, zu dem dieses Bewusstsein spricht, diese abwechselnd als gütig und grausam, allgegenwärtig und abwesend beschworene „Mutter“ gibt bis zum Zeitenende keine Antwort.

Das Raunen von Mutter Erde

Egal, wie man es mit Terrence Malick hält, eines muss man dem Regisseur neidlos anerkennen. Er hat sich in der Zwischenzeit eine Reputation erarbeitet, die jedes seiner neuen Werke – und sei es lediglich im Stadium der Ankündigung – mit einer gewaltigen Erwartungshaltung auflädt.Gewiss ist auch, dass der von ihm seit Tree of Life eingeschlagene Weg, nicht mehr Filme im eigentlichen Sinne, sondern eher Kosmologien bzw. audiovisuelle Essays zu drehen, das Publikum ziemlich genau in der Mitte spaltet. Und bei seinem neuen Film Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey wird das nicht viel anders sein.

In rund 90 Minuten entwirft Malick eine Reise durch das Universum und die Entstehung des Lebens, die vom Urknall bis zu den Steinzeitmenschen reicht. Untermalt wird der teilweise hypnotische Bilderbogen von sphärisch-sinfonischer Musik (gerne mit Choral-Begleitung) und dem Flüstern und Wispern von Cate Blanchett, die sparsame Kommentare einspricht, die sich an eine eher kosmische „Mutter“ richten, die als „Trägerin des Lebens“ und „Überbringerin des Guten“ bezeichnet wird, als Symbol für die ewige (Wieder)Geburt des Lebens in all seinen Daseinsformen.

Im Wesentlichen gliedert sich der Film in drei Teile, ohne dass diese klar also solche benannt wären. Im ersten geht es um die Entstehung des Kosmos und der Erde, im zweiten um die Geburt des organischen Lebens und im dritten um die Entwicklung der Spezies Mensch, für die Malick aber das geringste Interesse aufbringt – sie endet (abgesehen von gelegentlichen Inserts des chaotischen Lebens dieser Spezies) mit den grundlegenden zivilisatorischen Errungenschaften und Techniken wie der Erfindung von Werkzeugen und Waffen, dem Tragen von Kleidung und dem Feuer. Dieser letzte Teil fällt gegenüber den beiden vorhergehenden vor allem ästhetisch rapide ab. Zumal sich Urzeitmenschen mit von Bodybuilding gestählten Körpern und Zähnen, die fatal an das falsche Gebiss in Toni Erdmann erinnern, fast schon komisch ausnehmen.

Überhaupt überzeugt Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey – und darin liegt eine Tendenz, die man bereits in den vorigen Filmen Malicks beobachten konnte, – vor allem dann zumindest teilweise, wenn sich der Regisseur von allem Menschlichen abwendet und sich in reiner Naturbetrachtung und Welterklärung ergeht. So poetisch und stimmungsvoll gehaucht Cate Blanchetts Voice-over auch sein mag – abgesehen von einer gewissen Grundstimmung ergibt er kaum wirklich Sinn, transportiert keinerlei Kontext oder Information, sondern wirkt wie ein dunkel waberndes (und ja, gerne auch laberndes) Gedicht, eine Hymne an die Erde, das Leben, das Mütterliche als schöpferisches Grundprinzip. Merkwürdig mutet es zudem auch an, dass in Malicks Schöpfungskosmologie zwar die Geburt andauernd vorkommt, der Tod aber (nicht nur der individuelle, sondern auch derjenige der Arten) aus diesem Kreislauf des Lebens verbannt wurde.

So bietet Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey zwar über weite Strecken einen zweifelsohne gewaltigen ästhetischen Genuss – selten (vielleicht am ehesten in Koyaanisqatsi von Godfrey Reggio and Ron Fricke) hat man Lava so schön blubbern, Vulkane so herrlich explodieren, die Natur so prachtvoll in all ihrer Schönheit und ihren teilweise bizarren Schöpfungen gesehen. Sucht man aber nach dem tieferen Sinn, nach Malicks ureigener Sicht auf die Entstehung der Welt, bleibt außer dunklem Geraune und einem in Worte gefassten Mutterkomplex gegenüber der Schöpfung nicht viel übrig.

Terrence Malicks neuer Film „Voyage of Time“ umfasst nicht weniger als eine Geschichte des Universums, von dessen Beginn bis zum letzten Herzschlag. Eine filmische Untersuchung all dessen, was das Dasein ausmacht: Wissenschaft und Spiritualität , Geburt und Tod, der Kosmos und die kleinsten Lebewesen auf unserem Planeten.

MUBI has announced that their curated streaming service will exclusively stream Terrence Malick ' s Voyage of Time: An IMAX Documentary . The film will be available to stream on the service later in December of this year. Along with the announcement, MUBI has also dropped a new trailer.

The immersive, epic documentary will explore the birth of the universe. The documentary features stunning imagery of subjects both terrestrial and not. The film will explore the history of the cosmos and our world, from the Big Bang to the age of dinosaurs, all the way to the present. Brad Pitt will narrate the documentary.

Voyage of Time will combine research from leading scientists and stunning footage from Dan Glass, a BAFTA-nominated VFX master. Some of the footage from the documentary was also taken from NASA space probes, giving us a glimpse of our solar system from a never-before-seen, panoramic perspective.

His previous film The Tree of Life , which was released in 2011, was a philosophical film that approached the meaning of the universe through the lens of one Texas family in the 1950s. The Tree of Life , like Voyage of Time , also heavily featured extraterrestrial imagery and footage of space. Malick was nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for his work on The Tree of Life . The Voyage of Time' s narrator, Brad Pitt also starred in the 2011 film.

The Voyage of Time will be available to stream in 4K, presenting the beauty and scope of the universe in completely immersive detail. The V oyage of Time will be available to stream exclusively on MUBI beginning December 17, 2021. The documentary will be available to stream globally, with the exception of China, Japan, CIS, Baltics.
