National Road Trip Day – May 24, 2024

National Road Trip Day occurs on the Friday before Memorial Day in the U.S. (on the last Monday of May), so this year it falls on May 24. There’s a reason why ‘The Great American Road Trip’ is now a catchphrase — because the U.S. is the one country where road trips count as a holiday in themselves. Whether it’s to pay tribute to fallen national heroes by visiting war memorials across the country, or an excuse to get out of town and have a change of scenery; the road trip has been loved by Americans throughout history. From great works of literature inspired by the road to songs that we know and love — road trips mean something to everyone, which is why we are excited that the road trip has a special day of its own. Plus, who wouldn’t want to make the most of the long weekend by going out of town, and that’s where we come in, with tips to help you scratch that travel-bug itch.

History of National Road Trip Day

National Road Trip Day became an official holiday in 2019, thanks to Pilot Flying J, the largest travel center operator in North America. They chose the Friday before Memorial Day because of the long weekend ahead and, with May being the start of summer, it kickstarts the travel season, too. Since travel stories are ingrained into the very history of America, with wagon trains heading out West in the 1840s and Native Americans exploring the country long before that — it makes sense to observe a day that celebrates travel by road.

The first recorded road trip across the U.S. began in 1903 with a bet. Someone bet Horatio Nelson Jackson (a physician and automobile pioneer) that he could not travel from San Francisco to New York City in less than 90 days. Accompanied by mechanic Sewall K. Crocker, and a dog named Bud, they set off in a 20-horsepower Winston to prove them wrong. Despite numerous mishaps, Jackson and Crocker completed the trip in 63 days.

By the 1930s, the famous Route 66 opened America up for cross-country travel. Many began to migrate West, while others took to the road for vacations. By the 1950s, America was the world’s largest car manufacturer, and nearly 75% of American families owned a car, which became a symbol of American pop culture. Road trips became the typical holiday of the American middle classes, leading to a boom in drive-ins and roadside motel businesses, too. Hippies in the ’60s then converted the road trip into a full-blown lifestyle, turning vans and buses into homes on wheels.

In the ’80s and ’90s, road travel dipped with the rise of air travel but, today, the road trip still has a special charm of its own. The ‘Great American Road Trip’ stands for the freedom and adventure that only the road can bring!

It was a benchmark in the government’s plans to build more highways and interstates to connect the nation.

This particular national day was conceived by Pilot Flying J , the largest travel center operator in North America, and it was officially declared as such in 2019. The day comes right before Memorial Day, which itself comes at the beginning of the summer months. With a three day weekend and often warm weather, plenty of people use the weekend to kick off summer travel. There’s something endlessly romantic about summer road trips. You’re hitting the highway, putting on some tunes, rolling the windows down, and soaking in that warm breeze—perhaps setting up camp for the night in a scenic spot and cooking dinner over a campfire. 

Memorial Day weekend is the official start of road trip season, and after a year where so many of us were stuck at home, being able to travel again feels like a welcome return to normal. With vaccination numbers going up and COVID-19 cases going down across the U.S., we’re more excited than ever to hit the road this summer.

In honor of National Road Trip Day on May 28, we’re sharing the Roadtrippers team’s summer travel plans below—including Route 66 , national parks, quirky museums, the first road trip with a new baby, and a bucket list adventure in Alaska.

My wife, 6-month-old baby, and I are driving up to Glen Arbor, Michigan, to spend two nights near Sleeping Bear . Then we’re driving to Mackinaw City and taking a ferry to Mackinac Island for two more nights. A short trip, but we’re looking forward to it. We took a great trip to Michigan last year, but we stayed further south on the Lake Michigan side. We loved it, so this time we’re driving straight to northern Michigan as a warm-up trip for us to learn how to roadtrip with our baby before we drive to Florida in the fall.

In August, my dad and I are planning to drive the section of Route 66 from Chicago, Illinois, to Tulsa, Oklahoma. We’ve done several of the western parts of the route (together or separately) and this will bring both of us closer to our goal of traveling the entire Mother Road. This June, my family of six will travel from Jackson, Wyoming, to Great Falls, Montana. We’ll start at the Grand Tetons , where we’ll do a float trip of the Snake River and some hiking. Next, we’ll head to Yellowstone National Park and stay at the Old Faithful Inn for two nights. My wife and kids have never seen a geyser, moose, or bison, so I’m excited to share that experience with them. Next, we’ll drive through Montana and stay in Glacier National Park . We’re hoping to travel the Going-to-the-Sun Road if the snow has been cleared. Bonus: My son is in the fifth grade, and this year, all fifth-graders and their families get into national parks for free.

This will be the first time we’re making this 1,200-mile trip with an electric vehicle, and we are just starting to plan how we mix charging stops with entertainment to take advantage of the “fueling” time.

I’m meeting up with friends who live in Salt Lake City, Utah, and we’re roadtripping to the Greater Zion area. I’ll be there for six days and we’re spending two nights in Springdale, near Zion National Park , and two nights in St. George (the other nights will be in Salt Lake City). I was in Zion National Park when pandemic restrictions started to unfold in March, 2020, so I’ve been calling this my “revenge COVID trip.” I can’t wait to hike The Narrows if the weather cooperates and see the park in warmer weather. I’m also excited to visit some less-touristy areas like the Kolob Canyons and Sand Hollow State Park . And of course, I can’t wait to go back for a Veyo pie.

Don’t forget to enjoy some electric car (EV) perks on National Road Trip Day. Some destinations have specially designated parking spots for EVs. These can come in handy during pit stops. Some states, such as California and Utah, have a Clean Air Vehicle (CAV) decal program that allows you special access to the carpool lane. Free valet parking and hotel charging is also available by some participating hotel chains for EVs. 

How much money can an electric car save you?

A study by ConsumerReports * found that EV fuel savings alone can be $4,700 or more during the first seven years of ownership. Additionally, over the lifespan of most electric cars, they could save  you between $6,000-$10,000. Actual savings depend on what gas vehicle you are replacing with an EV. The study also found that maintenance and repair costs on an electric car are lower when compared to a gas vehicle. During your road trip, you may see some great savings when charging. Public charging stations can be free, pay-as-you-go, or subscription-based. Some vehicle manufacturers also provide complimentary public charging at participating locations. For example, if a charging station charges $1.50 per hour to charge on Level 2 (the most common method) and $0.26 for DC fast charging, charging a 40-kWh battery with a 150-mile range would cost $0.08/mile on Level 2 and $0.09/mile for DC fast charging. As of the publishing date of this blog, California’s average gas price is $3.73 per gallon *. That means it would cost about $0.14/mi for a gas car, assuming you are driving a 25MPG gas car. Savings could be even greater if you are using a free charging station or if you are comparing to a higher gas price per gallon. 

How far will an electric car take you?

It is a misconception that electric cars won’t take you long distances. Technology advances have made roadtrips in EVs possible and affordable. Here are some EVs with the mile range you can expect on a full charge.** 

• Tesla Model 3 – 310 mi
• Tesla Model S – 370mi
• Chevrolet Bolt EV – 238 mi
• Nissan Leaf – 226 mi
• BMW i3 – 153 mi

As you can see, a full charge can take you a good distance. If you start in Los Angeles, CA, a Tesla Model 3** or Model S** could take you to Yosemite National Park with no need to charge until arriva (based purely on expected mileage, of course – your actual driving experience will vary based on road conditions)l. 

Here are some popular road trips you could potentially take on National Road Trip Day with only one or two charges along the way.

• Los Angeles to Yosemite National Park (279.4 mi)
• Los Angeles to Monterey (319.6 mi)
• Flagstaff to Albuquerque (322.5 mi)
• Salt Lake City to Zion National Park (308 mi)
• Portland to Oregon (174 mi)
• Key Largo to Key West “The Road to Paradise” (97.2 mi)

Of course your electric car could take you even further, but you may have to plan additional charging stops.

The future of road trips**

There are many exciting electric cars planned for the future. Tesla, one of the most popular EV manufacturers, plans to offer a more affordable $25,000 Tesla model * in the near future. If you are a true road trip fanatic, you may be even more excited to hear about the Lightye ar One*, a long-range solar-powered EV designed to be grid-independent. Its manufacturer claims you could drive for months without needing a charge. The first mass-produced solar-powered ca r* by Aptera Motors is set to roll out in 2021. According to the manufacturer, it is expected to go as far as 150 miles with a 15-minute charge.

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Thinking of taking a last-minute drive to see the eclipse here's what to know.

NASA says that roughly 31.6 million people live in the path of this year's total solar eclipse, and a little under half of the U.S. population lives within 200 miles driving distance of the path of totality .

That could mean many millions of Americans will hit the road to get a better view on April 8. If you're still pondering whether or not you want to make the journey, here's what to consider.

Have some destinations in mind, and check the weather and cloud cover forecasts in advance

It's a good idea to scout out one or more locations within driving distance, so that you have some flexibility if traffic or weather is threatening your plans, says Jonathan Upchurch, a professor emeritus of civil engineering at Arizona State University who has studied travel around solar eclipses.

There are several interactive tools that show the path of totality, including Eclipse2024.org and the National Solar Observatory . You can use them to figure out what sites might work best for you.

In terms of weather, check not just the weather forecast, but also the cloud cover forecast. Some websites, such as Windy.com will predict cloud cover ahead of time, giving you a sense of whether you'll actually be able to see the eclipse in all its glory.

During the total solar eclipse in 2017, Upchurch says he chose to go to Idaho "because there were some great chances of having sunny skies, and I had the opportunity to be nimble and relocate if I wanted to."

Before driving into the path of totality, make sure your gas tank is full and that you've got everything you need

During the last total solar eclipse in 2017, it's estimated some 5 million people took to the roads, and those numbers will potentially be much higher this year.

Given all that, Upchurch says it's important to make sure you're taking what you need into the path of totality. You should make sure your car is gassed or charged up, and that you have plenty of snacks and water with you in case you get stranded for a while, especially when trying to leave.

Simple tips to safely photograph the eclipse with your cellphone.

Also don't forget to bring eclipse glasses, which must be worn anytime you're looking at the sun, except for the few minutes when it is completely blocked by the moon.

Some state emergency planners also recommend bringing a paper map or road atlas in case cellular networks become overloaded with visitors seeking directions from their phones.

Arrive early and stay late

Once you figure out where you're going to watch the eclipse, and you've got your supplies, try to get there early. Although traffic is likely to be heavier than normal on the morning of eclipse day, it still should be possible to reach many destinations without too much hassle, says Upchurch.

"Leaving is definitely going to be more of a problem," he says. As the eclipse concludes, people will take to the roads all at once to try and get home as fast as they can. In 2017, that led to traffic jams that lasted many hours in some areas. If possible, Upchurch says, people should stay put for a while to try and avoid the worst of the post-eclipse rush, which in 2017 stretched even into the following day in some parts of the country.

And one more thing: If you do find yourself on the move near the time of the eclipse, state officials stress that you should not simply pull over to the side of the road or highway you're driving on. It's important to be parked legally and safely at the moment of totality.

If you're already in the path of totality: Relax and enjoy!

Several major metropolitan areas including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo are already inside the path of totality, so there's no need to seek a better view, Upchurch says. You'll probably have the most fun simply staying where you are.

If you're on the edge of the path of totality, however, you might consider making a short trip to get closer to the center of the eclipse's path.

"If you're within about 40 miles of the center line, you'll have two-and-a-half minutes or more" of complete totality, Upchurch says. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth making the trip to a more central location.

Despite studying the potential hassles of traveling extensively, Upchurch says he's still looking forward to seeing the 2024 eclipse, which he plans to watch from Texas.

"Totality is absolutely spectacular," he says. "If you have a chance to witness it, I would do it."

How do you travel? There are two kinds of people who take road trips. If you’re going together, you might want to discuss a compromise before hitting the road! The   tourist   takes their time getting there and doesn’t mind taking backroads to see long-forgotten ghost towns. On the other hand, the   pilot   enjoys seeing the country from the car, sets a course and frowns upon unscheduled stops or side trips.

While many travelers are familiar with more lengthy road trips such as Route 66 and California's Highway 1, the country is dotted with under-the-radar alternatives that offer plenty of excitement and less mileage. If you're one of the many trippers looking to hit the road for some new discoveries, here are some shorter options. 

Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway

New Mexico This roughly 150-mile loop starts approximately 40 miles north of Albuquerque and winds its way east toward Santa Fe through the scenic Santa Fe National Forest and Valles Caldera National Preserve. You'll spot towering volcanic cliffs rising above the path of the Jemez River, plus a colorful dam and hot springs pools. 

Wisconsin Highway 57

Extending north from Milwaukee up the coast of Lake Michigan, this 191-mile roadway deposits travelers at the northern tip of Wisconsin's intoxicating Door County peninsula. Often referred to as the "Cape Cod of the Midwest," Door County is packed with parks and beaches that provide plenty of opportunities to get out of the car and breathe in the fresh lake air. 

High Peaks Scenic Byway

New York This 30-mile scenic byway explores some of the most stunning terrain in New York's almost incomprehensibly massive 6.1 million-acre Adirondack Park. Also known as New York State Route 73, the byway passes through more than 40 of the highest peaks in the region as it makes its way southeast from the laid-back resort town of Lake Placid.

Historic Hills Scenic Byway

Iowa This laid-back 105-mile route traverses abundant historic sights in the rolling hills of southeast Iowa, extending west from the town of Donnellson. Along the way, you'll pass through 15,000 acres of public land including two state forests, three state parks, and parts of the Des Moines River. Be sure to snap photos of Iowa's oldest courthouse, a log cabin church from the 1850s, and Iowa's only Civil War battle site — the northernmost battle of the war.

Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway

Kansas With rugged canyons and vibrant red-hued mesas, this roughly 42-mile trail shows off a landscape one might not immediately associate with the state of Kansas. Proving that not all of the Jayhawk State is flat farmland, this southern Kansas route heading west from the town of Medicine Lodge also features a wealth of Native American historic sights and ample outdoor recreation near Coldwell Lake.

St. Croix Scenic Byway

Minnesota With nearly two dozen scenic byways, the Land of 10,000 Lakes is a highly underrated road trip destination. Among the state's best options is the 124-mile St. Croix Scenic Byway starting at Point Douglas outside Minneapolis and extending north along the path of the beautiful St. Croix River to the town of Sandstone. Watch as the wild river valleys in the south transition into more rugged bluffs as you head north. 

Big Smoky Valley Scenic Drive

Nevada Most people associate Nevada with desert, but this 100-mile stretch of State Route 376 in central Nevada tells an entirely different story as it introduces adventurous road trippers to the state's Big Smoky Valley. You'll have plenty of room to yourself as you pass through the little-visited Arc Dome Wilderness flanked by mountains such as the 11,781-foot Arc Dome. 

New Hampshire Coastal Byway

Yes, there is a coast in New Hampshire. And while its 18-mile coastline is the shortest of any state, it packs a lot of punch into a short distance from Seabrook to Portsmouth. Connecting 10 units of the state park system including the iconic Hampton Beach State Park, this short but sweet one-hour cruise is an instant mental reset. 

Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway

New York Less than two hours north of New York City, this 52-mile route has long been providing a nature escape for weary New Yorkers. With most of the route extending along New York State Route 28, the byway passes a number of cute towns and offers plenty of options for side trips to see sights such as the scenic Ashokan Reservoir and world-famous town of Woodstock. 

Wichita Mountains Byway

Oklahoma Observe wild bison from out your window as you navigate this 93-mile jaunt through Oklahoma's highly underrated Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and the scenic valleys of the 550-million-year-old Wichita Mountains. While only around 2,400 feet in elevation, these rugged beauties provide the perfect environment for quieting your mind after weeks cooped up indoors.

Route 66: Then and Now

Flaming Gorge-Uintas National Scenic Byway

Utah Hidden in the often-overlooked northeast corner of Utah hides the stunning natural wonder that is the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. The 200,000-acre outdoor wonderland of canyons and forests carved by the Green River is best enjoyed along this stunning 82-mile road trip from the town of Vernal north to the Wyoming border, passing through Ashley National Forest.

Boreas Pass

Colorado Winding 22 miles through an endless amalgamation of high-altitude mental therapy, this lesser-known Colorado road trip just outside Breckenridge is something of a local secret. The hour-long drive tops off at 11,481 feet and offers ample opportunities for hiking right along the side of the road, allowing travelers to marvel at the sun-soaked mountains and lakes below while listening to the soft sounds of aspen trees shimmering in the wind. 

Mirror Lake Scenic Byway

Utah One of Utah's highest roads reaches an elevation of 10,687 feet as it crisscrosses through the massive Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest from the town of Kamas (15 miles east of Park City) to the Wyoming border. Picturesque waterfalls and pristine lakes dot the landscape as you traverse the forested valleys of the largely undiscovered Uinta Mountains. 

Cherohala Skyway

North Carolina, Tennessee This lesser-known, more recently completed 43-mile national scenic byway showcases the best of the border region between western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee as it makes its way up 5,400-foot mountain peaks on the North Carolina side before carving through the heavily forested Tennessee backcountry. With sweeping views and little traffic, driving this road is basically like being in a car commercial.

Copper Country Trail

Michigan This 47-mile scenic byway explores the history and scenic beauty of one of America's most underrated natural treasures: Michigan's Upper Peninsula. While investigating the area's rich history of copper mining, don't forget to take side trips to nearby state parks and gorgeous coastal overlooks dotted throughout Michigan's wild and rugged Keweenaw Peninsula. 

Amish Country Byway

Ohio Turn off your phone and unplug from modern life for a while as you meander this 76-mile route through rural Ohio. The rolling hills and pastoral landscapes will give you a sense of a bygone era which continues to reject modern convenience to this day, dotted with plenty of historic sights related to Amish and northern Appalachian culture. 

Sky Island Scenic Byway

Arizona This short scenic drive north of Tucson packs a lot of action into just 27 miles. Climbing more than 6,000 feet as it passes through several distinct landscapes from the Sonoran Desert to the Santa Catalina Mountains, this unique winding roadway allows visitors the chance to experience all four seasons in just one trip.

From waterfalls and state parks to small towns and peach orchards, this road has it all.

We'd have a rental car for the whole thing.

I have been to Dubrovnik and would skip going back, but it's important to my travel partner to lay his eyes upon Croatia, so it needs to be somewhere in our trip just briefly.

We like history (Sarajevo and Dubrovnik should scratch that) and nature/culture are the other two priorities. We don't need beach time. We will be there in early/mid May.

I will stay longer and return the rental car to the same place where it came from for cost savings, but we can even change arrival/departure locations if anyone has a better proposal. I have always imagined Sarajevo to be up my alley and thus I chose it for our arrival, but if someone wants to argue for Kosovo instead of Bosnia in this trip (or just more Albania) I'm open to hearing that!

We are coming from California. On my previous trip to the region, I visited Croatia with a day trip to Mostar. I was really enchanted by the landscape of Bosnia — it was unlike anything I had seen before — and I would like a bit more exposure. However, if any of the nature areas we have listed feel similar to what we can experience closer to home, we can readjust our plan.
