Peter Frampton Won’t Say Goodbye On 2024 ‘Never EVER Say Never Tour’

Peter Frampton isn’t hanging it up just yet and will return to the road in spring 2024 on the Never EVER Say Never Tour . The new stretch of dates from the Frampton Comes Alive guitarist will celebrate his 60th year of touring.

The Never EVER Say Never Tour will kick off on March 3rd in Greensboro, NC, with stops along the East Coast including dates in New Jersey (3/5), Connecticut (3/7), New York (3/9), and Maryland (3/15). Frampton will then hit theaters throughout the Midwest in Michigan (3/16), Indiana (3/18), and Illinois (3/30), as he makes his way westward for stops in Minnesota (4/1), Nebraska (4/3), and Missouri (4/5) ahead of a show at Denver’s Mission Ballroom (4/7). The tour will wind down with concerts in Salt Lake City (4/9), Reno (4/11), L.A.’s The Greek Theatre (4/13), and finally San Diego (4/14).

“I am delighted to let you know I’m planning more shows in March and April for the new Never EVER Say Never Tour ! I don’t want to give up my passion and will play as long as I physically can,” Frampton said. “Hope to see you in 2024!”

This new run arrives on the heels of Frampton’s 2023 spring and summer outing, which came as a surprise to fans. Four years ago, Frampton went out on his farewell tour following his diagnosis of the degenerative disease inclusion-body myositis. In the aftermath of the tour, however, Frampton retooled his live experience to accommodate his ailment, including now performing while seated, in order to keep going and continue touring for as long as he’s able. As the guitarist mounts one victory lap after another, many of the musicians who grew up listening to him have come out to pay their respects including Chris Stapleton and Warren Haynes , who both played with Frampton at Ryman Auditorium .

December 1, 2023—To celebrate his 60 th year of touring, Grammy Award-winning guitarist Peter Frampton confirms new spring dates on “ Never EVER Say Never Tour .” Fresh off the heels of his nationwide headline run this year, the 2024 tour will see the legendary artist playing at venues across North America, including a stop at Los Angeles ’ Greek Theatre .

“I am delighted to let you know I’m planning more shows in March and April for the new Never EVER Say Never Tour! I don’t want to give up my passion and will play as long as I physically can,” says Frampton. “Hope to see you in 2024!”

The upcoming shows kick off what promises to be yet another landmark year for Frampton, whose 2023 spring and summer tour announcements were unexpected by fans. The musician announced a farewell tour four years ago following a diagnosis of the degenerative disease inclusion-body myositis, but with the aptly named “Never EVER Say Never Tour,” Frampton is back, appearing on stages across America. Most recently, Frampton was joined by Chris Stapleton who performed alongside him at his sold-out Ryman Auditorium show in Nashville, TN last month.

Peter Frampton is one of the most celebrated artists and guitarists in rock history. In 2007, Frampton won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album for Fingerprints and in 2014 was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame. He received the prestigious Les Paul Innovation Award from NAMM’s TEC Awards in 2019 and his album All Blues was #1 for fifteen weeks on Billboard ’s Blues Chart. In 2020 Frampton was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, his autobiography Do You Feel Like I Do?: A Memoir debuted on The New York Times Bestsellers list, and his 2021 album Frampton Forgets The Words was released to widespread critical acclaim.

Most recently, Frampton appeared on Dolly Parton’s new album, Rockstar , which was released last month, as the only artist featured on two tracks. Peter Frampton Continues Return to Performing With 2024 Tour

Peter Frampton has announced 2024 dates for his surprising return to touring with his newly renamed “Never Ever Say Never” tour. The 18 U.S. concerts, announced today (December 1, 2023), take place in March and April. A pre-sale begins Dec. 4; tickets for the general public will be available Dec. 8 at 10 a.m. local time here and here .

The 2024 tour follows a series of shows that Frampton performed over the summer and again in November. When he announced the latter, he wrote, “I can’t thank you enough for your love and encouragement at every show! I’m just a glutton for enjoyment and hope you can come see us!”

In 2019, after the Grammy Award-winning guitarist revealed that he had a rare and incurable muscular disease that causes the muscles to weaken slowly, he played what he described as a farewell tour of the U.S. It was thought at the time that that was, indeed, the end of his touring days. Best Classic Bands even wrote a recap of the final show , headlined, “Thank You, Peter Frampton.” Later that year, he announced a short, European farewell edition for 2020. The tour was delayed due to the pandemic, but ultimately took place in 2022.

“At the end of every Finale Tour show I did say, ‘Never Say Never’ and I am always full of hope for the impossible,” said Frampton in his April 2023 comeback announcement. “I’m very pleased to let you know that I am feeling strong and my fingers are still roaming the fretboard. Every note I play now has more meaning and soul. I love playing live and this fighter wants to stay in the ring for as long as he can. I’m so happy to be able to see you all one more time this summer.”

The classic rock legend, who turned 73 on April 22, won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album for Fingerprints in 2007. In 2020 Frampton was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and published his autobiography, Do You Feel Like I Do?: A Memoir . In November 2022, Frampton performed a sold-out show at London’s Royal Albert Hall that was recorded and released in 2023. After 47 years, Frampton Comes Alive! remains one of the top-selling live records of all time selling over 17 million worldwide. Despite his many accomplishments, including his years with Humble Pie, Frampton continues to be overlooked by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s induction committee.

On April 22, 1950 Peter Kenneth Frampton was born to Owen and Peggy Frampton in Beckenham, Kent, UK

At the age of 10, Peter played in a band called The Little Ravens. He and David Bowie both went to Bromley Technical School and would spend lunch breaks together, playing Buddy Holly songs. The Little Ravens and Bowie's band, George and the Dragons, played shows together. When he was 11 years old, he played in the Trubeats before joining The Preachers, a band that Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman produced and managed.

Peter became a successful child guitarist, and in 1966 he became a member of The Herd, landing three British Top 10 hits. He was also named The Face of 1968 by Rave, a teen magazine.

In 1969, when Peter was 18 years old in 1969, he co-founded one of the first super groups, seminal rock act Humble Pie with Steve Marriott.

Peter met Pete Drake in 1970, on George Harrison’s session for his All Things Must Pass album. Pete introduced Peter to the "talk box" which would become one of Frampton's trademark guitar effects. In 1972, Peter's solo career debut Wind of Change was released, with guest artists Billy Preston and Ringo Starr.

Peter released a whopping 6 albums in this decade: Frampton's Camel was released in 1973 and Somethin's Happening was released in 1974. In 1975, Frampton was released and rose to #32 in the US charts, and was certified Gold by the RIAA. In 1976, Frampton Comes Alive! was released and became a best-selling live album with hit singles "Baby, I Love Your Way," "Show Me the Way," and "Do You Feel Like We Do". In 1977, I'm In You was released and went platinum

In 1978, Peter starred in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with The Bee Gees, Aerosmith, Billy Preston, George Burns and others. Later that year, Peter was in a near-fatal car accident in the Bahamas.

Peter received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1979 and that same year, Where I Should Be was released.

Rise Up was released in 1980. The same year, Peter's black Les Paul Custom, "Phenix", was lost in a plane crash. In 1981, Breaking All the Rules was released and was recorded almost completely live. 1982 brought the release of The Art of Control. In 1986, Premonition was released with the hit single, "Lying". Frampton played on David Bowie's album Never Let Me Down in 1987 and joined Bowie on his Glass Spider tour.

In 1994, the Peter Frampton album was released. Frampton Comes Alive! II was recorded on June 15, 1995 at The Fillmore Theater in San Francisco. In 1996, Peter appeared as himself on the hit tv show The Simpsons headlining Homerpalooza.

In 2000, Peter was the technical advisor for Cameron Crowe’s Oscar winning movie, Almost Famous. Peter wrote a lot of the music on the soundtrack and appeared in the film as Humble Pie’s road manager. The album Now was released in 2003 and Frampton embarked on a tour with Styx. In 2006, Peter released the album Fingerprints. And in 2007, the album won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album. Peter was immortalized as himself on The Family Guy in 2009.

Thank You Mr Churchill was released in 2010 and was Peter's 14th studio album. The album included a song written with his son, Julian Frampton. Peter went on a North American tour with the band Yes. 2011 marked the 35th anniversary of Frampton Comes Alive! and Peter embarked on a 69 date tour playing the songs exactly as they were recorded on the album. In 2012, Peter received ASCAP’s Global Impact Award. In 2013, Frampton's Guitar Circus went on tour featuring guest performers B.B. King, Robert Cray, Don Felder, Rick Derringer, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Steve Lukather, Sonny Landreth, Davy Knowles, David Hidalgo, Mike McCready, Roger McGuinn and Vinnie Moore. Frampton was one of several musicians to participate in 2014's The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to The Beatles tribute to the Beatles on the 50th anniversary of their first appearance on American television. Hummingbird in a Box was released in 2014 and Peter performed a few shows live onstage with the Cincinnati Ballet. Acoustic Classics was released in 2015, featuring many of his hits. In 2016, Frampton was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. Peter toured with the Steve Miller Band in 2017 and 2018 and was given the Les Paul Innovation Award at NAMM in 2018 as well.

On February 22, 2019 Frampton announced his retirement from rigorous touring with his 'Peter Frampton Finale—The Farewell Tour' after disclosing his diagnosis of inclusion body myositis (IBM), a progressive muscle disorder. That same year, Peter was honored at The Music Business Association Awards & Hall Of Fame Dinner with the Chairman’s Award For Sustained Creative Achievement. Also in 2019, All Blues was released and debuted at number one and stayed there for 15 weeks on the Billboard Top Blues Albums Chart.

In 2020 Frampton published his memoir, Do You Feel Like I Do?, co-written with Alan Light that debuted on the New York Times Best Seller List. Also, in 2020, Frampton Comes Alive! was inducted in to the Grammy Hall of Fame. Frampton Forgets the Words album released in 2021.

Peter Frampton has mapped out a new run of tour dates for 2024 after returning to the road earlier this year.

The “Never EVER Say Never Tour” kicks off in Greensboro, North Carolina on March 3rd and will stop in Kansas City, Denver, Los Angeles, and more before wrapping up in San Diego on April 14th. See the full itinerary below.

Never, ever, say “never.”

That’s the new slogan for rock icon Peter Frampton. Back on June 21, Frampton launched his comeback Never Say Never Tour after previously retiring when he completed his Finale Tour back in 2019. After a summer filled with capacity shows, he extended the run into the fall. Now, Peter is keeping the comeback going with a new set of 2024 tour dates, dubbed the Never Ever Say Never Tour.

“I am delighted to let you know I’m planning more shows in March and April for the new Never EVER Say Never Tour,” Frampton stated. “I don’t want to give up my passion and will play as long as I physically can. Hope to see you in 2024!”

The trek kicks off on March 3 at the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts in Greensboro, North Carolina and wraps up on April 14 at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park in San Diego, California. Pre-sale and VIP tickets go on sale Monday, December 4 at 10am local time, running through Thursday, December 7 at 10pm. Public on sale starts on Friday, December 8 at 10am.

Peter Frampton Confirms New Dates On ‘Never Say Never’ Tour

Following his nationwide run of summer tour dates, Grammy Award-winning guitarist Peter Frampton will continue the Never Say Never Tour with a string of November shows. The tour kicks off in Louisville, Kentucky at The Louisville Palace and includes stops at Austin, Texas’s Moody Theater, Birmingham, Alabama’s BJCC Concert Hall, Nashville, Tennessee’s Ryman Auditorium and more.

The upcoming performances add to yet another landmark year for Frampton, whose spring tour announcement was unexpected by fans. The legendary musician announced a farewell tour four years ago after a diagnosis of the degenerative disease inclusion-body myositis, but with the aptly named Never Say Never Tour, Frampton is back, appearing on stages across America.

The guitarist has announced 18 dates for 2024

British guitarist Peter Frampton will celebrate 60 years of touring with the Never Ever Say Never Tour in 2024. Frampton will play 18 small venues and theaters in North America starting in March.

Frampton initially announced that last year’s Peter Frampton Finale — The Farewell Tour presented by SiriusXM would be his final trek due to his diagnosis of the degenerative muscle disease Inclusion-Body Myositis (IBM). However, the guitarist says he will continue to perform as long as he’s able.

“I am delighted to let you know I’m planning more shows in March and April for the new Never EVER Say Never Tour!” Frampton shares. “I don’t want to give up my passion and will play as long as I physically can. Hope to see you in 2024!”

Presale and VIP tickets go on sale Monday, December 4th at 10 am local time ahead of the public on sale on Friday, December 8th at 10 am local time.

Peter Frampton remains one of the most lauded artists in rock history. At age 16, he was lead singer and guitarist for British band The Herd. At 18, he co-founded one of the first super-groups, the seminal rock act Humble Pie. His session work includes collaborations with such legendary artists as George Harrison, Harry Nilsson, David Bowie, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ringo Starr, John Entwistle, Mike McCready and Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam), among many others.

Frampton has appeared as himself on television shows The Simpsons and Family Guy . He also served as technical advisor on Cameron Crowe’s 2000 film Almost Famous as well as appearing in it and writing songs for the soundtrack. In 2007 he won the Grammy Award for “Best Pop Instrumental Album” for Fingerprints and in 2014 he was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame.

Frampton has toured with the likes of David Bowie, Stevie Nicks, Greg Allman, Ringo Starr, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick, Steve Miller Band, Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings and many others. Peter Frampton is Returning to the Road on Never Say Never Tour

On Tuesday (April 11), the rock legend announced that he’s heading out on the Never Say Never Tour in the latter half of 2023. The tour kicks off on June 21 in Huber Heights, Ohio, and visits a series of theaters across the country in cities including Boston, Niagra Falls, Charlotte, Orlando and Atlantic City before wrapping up in Sandy, Utah, on August 19. Tickets go on sale Friday (April 14).

In 2019, Frampton announced that he’d been diagnosed with IBM, a muscle disorder that impacted his ability to play guitar, and that his Peter Frampton Finale—The Farewell Tour would be his last. He also donated one dollar from every ticket sold to the Peter Frampton Myositis Research Fund at Johns Hopkins , which he founded after getting the diagnosis. The fund was set up at John Hopkins University where he’s receiving treatment.

On July 28, Frampton will release the limited edition box set, Frampton@50 , that features three famous albums from the early days of his career between 1972 and 1975: Wind of Change , Frampton’s Camel and Frampton .

“I listened to all three albums and was whisked back in time,” Frampton previously said about the box set. “It was such an emotional journey for me hearing these songs again, as the music and my life at that time all came flooding back. I have enjoyed being involved in every aspect of the production of this album set.”

Peter Frampton Announces ‘Never Say Never’ US Tour

Peter Frampton has announced a new U.S. tour titled Never Say Never.

The trek will begin on June 21 in Huber Heights, Ohio, and run until Aug. 19 in Sandy, Utah. A complete list of tour dates is available below.

Frampton, who revealed a diagnosis of inclusion-body myositis in early 2019, embarked on a Finale Tour later that year. In the fall of 2022, he performed a series of shows in Europe and the U.K., including a sold-out performance at London's Royal Albert Hall. In January, he performed at the Tucker Theater at Middle Tennessee State University in Nashville. He now says he's feeling well enough to hit the road once more.

Peter Frampton Finale Tour Farewell Dates Announced

The extensive run will take the classic rock guitar hero across North America for one more rock and roll ride

With a career spanning more than five decades, GRAMMY winner Peter Frampton has announced his farewell tour this summer. The extensive Peter Frampton Finale Tour will kick off June 18 in Tulsa, Okla., and wind through North America over the following months before wrapping in San Francisco on Oct. 12.

John Bonham 's Led Zeppelin will serve as supporting act for most of the shows, and the tour will hit major cities such as Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and more.

Prior to launching his solo career in 1972, Frampton fronted the '60s psychedilic rock outfit Humble Pie. His classic 1976 live album, Frampton Comes Alive! , produced the now-ubiquitous live hits "Show Me The Way," "Baby, I Love Your Way" and "Do You Feel Like I Do." The album was nominated for a GRAMMY for Album Of The Year, the first of Frampton's five career nominations. His first win came 30 years later for his 2006 album, Fingerprints , which won Best Pop Instrumental Album.

Catching Up With Neal Francis: How Peter Frampton, A Spiritual Journey & Chicago Pride Led To A Timeless Live Album & Film

For Neal Francis, a hometown show was the ultimate stage to capture his energetic performance via live album and concert film. The cheekily titled 'Francis Comes Alive' was recorded at Chicago's Thalia Hall.

A hometown gig is often something special for a performer — local friends and family bring a particular energy to the audience; the feel of a familiar room can enliven the show. Undoubtedly, there's a joy in performing for people who live in the same milieu that inspired your music.

For singer, songwriter and pianist Neal Francis , a hometown show was the ultimate stage to capture his energetic performance via live album and concert film. Recorded live to tape at Chicago's Thaila Hall with an expanded 11-piece band, Francis Comes Alive could've been cut in 1973 or 2023 — as if the Band, the Meters, Wings and Dr. John had become unstuck in time.

Fittingly, Francis and co. rollick through 12 originals on vintage analog equipment under moody lighting. Most of the band don custom jumpsuits; shaggy-haired Francis is centerstage wailing on the keys, his paisley-printed one-piece open to the navel. Through an occasionally hazy filter, the camera pans over the sold-out audience and the sound engineer, who is grooving backstage.

Compared to the incredible and bombastic stage shows documented in Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour , Francis Comes Alive is stripped down. But it's clear Francis and his all-Chicago band are having a great time. Touring with such a large, local ensemble "felt like a high school band field trip," Francis tells GRAMMY.com. "We ham it up there…everybody's just so together and it feels like one unit."

Neal Francis will close 2023 — which saw him play 113 dates across the country — with a New Year's Eve show in Denver, Colorado. GRAMMY.com caught up with Francis to discuss Francis Comes Alive , his spiritual journey back to music, and receiving a blessing from the OG rocker to Come Alive .

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

You've been touring heavily in the past few years, which would certainly hone your live show. Was that part of the thinking behind putting out a live album?

Definitely. We had talked about doing a live record and it just made sense: We've played hundreds of shows together, let's document it. But then of course adding an extra seven people to the equation, that was more of a separate vision.

What about your live performance did you think would translate well to a live album/film?

We've persisted in presenting this kind of old school rock show that may not be as common anymore, which I think resonates with people. I think people don't expect it because my recorded music is a lot more laid back and chill than what they encounter live. We just pour all of our energy into it.

I tried to make the presentation of the live album and the live film— as much as I could within the constraints of our budget— look special and ethereal. It all came from my initial brainchild, but I definitely would not have come close to pulling it off were it not for having that team around me: Al Basse is the director, [and] my stylist Rachel Epperson made all the jumpsuits from scratch for the entire band – including the one I was wearing.

There's one guy in a white suit that has all this fringe under his arms…

That's our guitarist. It was funny because that was what I envisioned myself wearing initially. What always happens with Rachel is I'll come in with some idea and then she'll just really go out in left field with it and end up creating something that's way more cool than anything I could ever think of.

Rachel makes a lot of what we wear on stage on any given night. She's been with us since early on.

There have been quite a few concert films out this year, including massive ones from Taylor Swift and Beyoncé . While yours is markedly different, did you think about any of those big tours as you were putting this concept together?

I don't want to say I have my head under a rock, but in some ways I do because I didn't have any idea that those were coming out! I don't have social media at all; I have a presence there thanks to my management team. I'm generally looking towards stuff I like from the past for inspiration, and [to] my spiritual journey. I read a lot.

My range of influence is a little bit different than whatever's happening currently. And I'd love to see T Swift's movie. My dad actually went and saw it, and I didn't ask how he liked it, but I should. [ Laughs .]

As far as other concert films, there's two that really come off the top of my head: The Last Waltz and Stop Making Sense . I feel like a cue was taken from The Last Waltz in hiring a horn section, perhaps.

I had this pretty strong visual experience doing some breathwork in January of 2023 that gave birth to the whole visual concept, and that gave me enough vocabulary and manic energy to start collaborating with Al and Rachel. And it just took shape from there.

I wanted custom set pieces like you would see on a 1960s variety show, but ideas like that had to be pared down. We ended up dressing up the risers, et cetera instead. The people I have working with me are just ingenious, so I think it came off really well.

Beyond the pandemic, the past five years or so have been quite a whirlwind for you. You broke up with a partner, you started a music ministry job in 2018, made your debut album Changes in 2019 and then put out In Plain Sight — which was recorded in that church, where you were also living, in 2021. How does your creative journey reflect those experiences?

I got sober in October of 2015 and I didn't really start investing back into my music career until I was a couple years sober.

The common thread for me has been as I develop a spiritual way of life — not to say a religious way of life, but just as I devote more time to things like meditation and increased mindfulness and awareness — it seems to translate to these gifts in my career that I didn't have at all before getting sober. The more I contribute to that side of things, the more everything else blossoms.

Have you seen yourself evolve as a performer as well?

Unquestionably. I'll just say inwardly, Wow, I'm able to sing so much better now . When that recording was made at Thalia Hall, unfortunately, I was still smoking. And that was something that I was actually in the midst of a relapse, smoking cigarettes. And I can really hear it, when I listen back.

One of the things that has been getting more consistent is my commitment to my vocal process, warming up and the sort of exercises I do. Also just the way in which I sing — learning how to sing at all because I just wasn't a singer before starting this project. Changes is really my first recorded attempt at singing lead vocals on anything.

What was your favorite song to play during this live session?

I still really enjoy playing "Changes" because we have this arrangement that's been kicked around live for a while, and the audience always really responds to it. "Sentimental Garbage" is another one that's really fun to play because we've added this sort of spacey droning synth section that is really fun and funny.

We ham it up there and it's really fun to play with this band because everybody's just so together and it feels like one unit.

I've always appreciated that your music sounds a bit out of time. I'd love to hear a little bit about the sonic fabric of Neal Francis.

When I was making Changes , I was kind of like, how close can I get to this? Specifically Allen Toussaint and Leon Russell and J.J. Cale and Curtis Mayfield— these are some of my heroes; what is in their playbook for these situations? That's sort of how I arrive at new things, just really trying to go for a certain aesthetic and then inevitably ending up somewhere different.

I've got a huge range of influences that I tried to open up more to on my second record. And now the record I'm working on currently, it's just another snapshot. I think the unifying element is probably the process; we do a lot of stuff analog, recording live as a band, and I think that's perhaps increasingly rare, and it yields a certain sound that's difficult to replicate.

I don't know if this is a musical hero of yours, but I read that you received a congratulatory text from Peter Frampton .

I guess he was tipped off by my friend Tom Cusimano. And the music industry is tiny in that regard. Tom sent Peter this Chicago Sun Times article about the Francis Comes Alive shows, and he sent his blessing. He was like, "Congratulations in advance, here's hoping it goes smoothly for you." It was so funny to get that the day we were recording. A real nice nod from him.

I have to ask you about this because it happened to me: the Neal Francis/ Neil Frances confusion. How do you feel about getting mistaken for that pop/dance duo?

It's definitely been a process. It's my actual name and not having any control over it, especially early on, it was really a challenge to let it roll off and accept it. Now we're actually acquainted with those guys and I'm going out to record something with them in early January.

We run into them: We had consecutive sets at Outside Lands and then they were on the same flight to L.A. recently from San Fran. It's very congenial and they're really in a different space musically. So there's not really a threat; if anything, I think, it's a boon to our individual success because people will mistakenly end up at the other person's shows, but end up enjoying it because it's a quality experience. So hopefully our collaboration will yield something interesting.

Beyond that collab, you mentioned that you're working on a new album. What else is on your plate?

That's the main thing on my horizon is getting rest and then making the album. Hopefully, having that wrapped the first couple of months of the year. Then I'm not really touring very much until that record gets released. We'll be doing more of those one-offs and festivals over the summer, starting with Jazz Fest in May, and then coming back with a proper album release tour.

[I'm also] building my own recording rig here at home so that we can record more and release more. It's two years since our last studio effort, and [I want to be] less precious about it but still having quality releases, but just maybe them being more frequent. That's just another muscle that I'm really excited to be working— just recording stuff on my own.

GRAMMY Rewind: Kendrick Lamar Honors Hip-Hop's Greats While Accepting Best Rap Album GRAMMY For 'To Pimp a Butterfly' In 2016

Upon winning the GRAMMY for Best Rap Album for 'To Pimp a Butterfly,' Kendrick Lamar thanked those that helped him get to the stage, and the artists that blazed the trail for him.

Updated Friday Oct. 13, 2023 to include info about Kendrick Lamar's most recent GRAMMY wins, as of the 2023 GRAMMYs.

A GRAMMY veteran these days, Kendrick Lamar has won 17 GRAMMYs and has received 47 GRAMMY nominations overall. A sizable chunk of his trophies came from the 58th annual GRAMMY Awards in 2016, when he walked away with five — including his first-ever win in the Best Rap Album category.

This installment of GRAMMY Rewind turns back the clock to 2016, revisiting Lamar's acceptance speech upon winning Best Rap Album for To Pimp A Butterfly . Though Lamar was alone on stage, he made it clear that he wouldn't be at the top of his game without the help of a broad support system.

"First off, all glory to God, that's for sure," he said, kicking off a speech that went on to thank his parents, who he described as his "those who gave me the responsibility of knowing, of accepting the good with the bad."

He also extended his love and gratitude to his fiancée, Whitney Alford, and shouted out his Top Dawg Entertainment labelmates. Lamar specifically praised Top Dawg's CEO, Anthony Tiffith, for finding and developing raw talent that might not otherwise get the chance to pursue their musical dreams.

"We'd never forget that: Taking these kids out of the projects, out of Compton, and putting them right here on this stage, to be the best that they can be," Lamar — a Compton native himself — continued, leading into an impassioned conclusion spotlighting some of the cornerstone rap albums that came before To Pimp a Butterfly .

"Hip-hop. Ice Cube . This is for hip-hop," he said. "This is for Snoop Dogg , Doggystyle . This is for Illmatic , this is for Nas . We will live forever. Believe that."

To Pimp a Butterfly singles "Alright" and "These Walls" earned Lamar three more GRAMMYs that night, the former winning Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song and the latter taking Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (the song features Bilal , Anna Wise and Thundercat ). He also won Best Music Video for the remix of Taylor Swift 's "Bad Blood."

Lamar has since won Best Rap Album two more times, taking home the golden gramophone in 2018 for his blockbuster LP DAMN ., and in 2023 for his bold fifth album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers .

A Guide To Modern Funk For The Dance Floor: L'Imperatrice, Shiro Schwarz, Franc Moody, Say She She & Moniquea

James Brown changed the sound of popular music when he found the power of the one and unleashed the funk with "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag." Today, funk lives on in many forms, including these exciting bands from across the world.

It's rare that a genre can be traced back to a single artist or group, but for funk, that was James Brown . The Godfather of Soul coined the phrase and style of playing known as "on the one," where the first downbeat is emphasized, instead of the typical second and fourth beats in pop, soul and other styles. As David Cheal eloquently explains, playing on the one "left space for phrases and riffs, often syncopated around the beat, creating an intricate, interlocking grid which could go on and on." You know a funky bassline when you hear it; its fat chords beg your body to get up and groove.

Brown's 1965 classic, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," became one of the first funk hits, and has been endlessly sampled and covered over the years, along with his other groovy tracks. Of course, many other funk acts followed in the '60s, and the genre thrived in the '70s and '80s as the disco craze came and went, and the originators of hip-hop and house music created new music from funk and disco's strong, flexible bones built for dancing.

Legendary funk bassist Bootsy Collins learned the power of the one from playing in Brown's band, and brought it to George Clinton , who created P-funk, an expansive, Afrofuturistic , psychedelic exploration of funk with his various bands and projects, including Parliament-Funkadelic . Both Collins and Clinton remain active and funkin', and have offered their timeless grooves to collabs with younger artists, including Kali Uchis , Silk Sonic , and Omar Apollo; and Kendrick Lamar , Flying Lotus , and Thundercat , respectively.

In the 1980s, electro-funk was born when artists like Afrika Bambaataa, Man Parrish, and Egyptian Lover began making futuristic beats with the Roland TR-808 drum machine — often with robotic vocals distorted through a talk box. A key distinguishing factor of electro-funk is a de-emphasis on vocals, with more phrases than choruses and verses. The sound influenced contemporaneous hip-hop, funk and electronica, along with acts around the globe, while current acts like Chromeo, DJ Stingray, and even Egyptian Lover himself keep electro-funk alive and well.

Today, funk lives in many places, with its heavy bass and syncopated grooves finding way into many nooks and crannies of music. There's nu-disco and boogie funk, nodding back to disco bands with soaring vocals and dance floor-designed instrumentation. G-funk continues to influence Los Angeles hip-hop, with innovative artists like Dam-Funk and Channel Tres bringing the funk and G-funk, into electro territory. Funk and disco-centered '70s revival is definitely having a moment, with acts like Ghost Funk Orchestra and Parcels , while its sparkly sprinklings can be heard in pop from Dua Lipa , Doja Cat , and, in full "Soul Train" character, Silk Sonic . There are also acts making dreamy, atmospheric music with a solid dose of funk, such as Khruangbin ’s global sonic collage.

There are many bands that play heavily with funk, creating lush grooves designed to get you moving. Say She She

Aptly self-described as "discodelic soul," Brooklyn-based seven-piece Say She She make dreamy, operatic funk, led by singer-songwriters Nya Gazelle Brown, Piya Malik and Sabrina Mileo Cunningham. Their '70s girl group-inspired vocal harmonies echo, sooth and enchant as they cover poignant topics with feminist flair.

While they’ve been active in the New York scene for a few years, they’ve gained wider acclaim for the irresistible music they began releasing this year, including their debut album, Prism . Their 2022 debut single "Forget Me Not" is an ode to ground-breaking New York art collective Guerilla Girls, and " Norma " is their protest anthem in response to the news that Roe vs. Wade could be (and was) overturned. The band name is a nod to funk legend Nile Rodgers , from the "Le freak, c'est chi" exclamation in Chic's legendary tune "Le Freak."

Moniquea 's unique voice oozes confidence, yet invites you in to dance with her to the super funky boogie rhythms. The Pasadena, California artist was raised on funk music; her mom was in a cover band that would play classics like Aretha Franklin’ s "Get It Right" and Gladys Knight ’s "Love Overboard." Moniquea released her first boogie funk track at 20 and, in 2011, met local producer XL Middelton — a bonafide purveyor of funk. She's been a star artist on his MoFunk Records ever since, and they've collabed on countless tracks, channeling West Coast energy with a heavy dose of G-funk, sunny lyrics and upbeat, roller disco-ready rhythms.

Her latest release is an upbeat nod to classic West Coast funk, produced by Middleton, and follows her February 2022 groovy, collab-filled album, On Repeat .

Shiro Schwarz

Shiro Schwarz is a Mexico City-based duo, consisting of Pammela Rojas and Rafael Marfil, who helped establish a modern funk scene in the richly creative Mexican metropolis. On "Electrify" — originally released in 2016 on Fat Beats Records and reissued in 2021 by MoFunk — Shiro Schwarz's vocals playfully contrast each other, floating over an insistent, upbeat bassline and an '80s throwback electro-funk rhythm with synth flourishes.

Their music manages to be both nostalgic and futuristic — and impossible to sit still to. 2021 single "Be Kind" is sweet, mellow and groovy, perfect chic lounge funk. Shiro Schwarz’s latest track, the joyfully nostalgic "Hey DJ," is a collab with funkstress Saucy Lady and U-Key.

L'Impératrice

L'Impératrice (the empress in French) are a six-piece Parisian group serving an infectiously joyful blend of French pop, nu-disco, funk and psychedelia. Flore Benguigui's vocals are light and dreamy, yet commanding of your attention, while lyrics have a feminist touch.

During their energetic live sets, L'Impératrice members Charles de Boisseguin and Hagni Gwon (keys), David Gaugué (bass), Achille Trocellier (guitar), and Tom Daveau (drums) deliver extended instrumental jam sessions to expand and connect their music. Gaugué emphasizes the thick funky bass, and Benguigui jumps around the stage while sounding like an angel. L’Impératrice’s latest album, 2021’s Tako Tsubo , is a sunny, playful French disco journey.

Franc Moody

Franc Moody 's bio fittingly describes their music as "a soul funk and cosmic disco sound." The London outfit was birthed by friends Ned Franc and Jon Moody in the early 2010s, when they were living together and throwing parties in North London's warehouse scene. In 2017, the group grew to six members, including singer and multi-instrumentalist Amber-Simone.

Their music feels at home with other electro-pop bands like fellow Londoners Jungle and Aussie act Parcels. While much of it is upbeat and euphoric, Franc Moody also dips into the more chilled, dreamy realm, such as the vibey, sultry title track from their recently released Into the Ether .

Living Legends: Billy Idol On Survival, Revival & Breaking Out Of The Cage

"One foot in the past and one foot into the future," Billy Idol says, describing his decade-spanning career in rock. "We’ve got the best of all possible worlds because that has been the modus operandi of Billy Idol."

Living Legends is a series that spotlights icons in music still going strong today. This week, GRAMMY.com spoke with Billy Idol about his latest EP, Cage , and continuing to rock through decades of changing tastes.

Billy Idol is a true rock 'n' roll survivor who has persevered through cultural shifts and personal struggles. While some may think of Idol solely for "Rebel Yell" and "White Wedding," the singer's musical influences span genres and many of his tunes are less turbo-charged than his '80s hits would belie.

Idol first made a splash in the latter half of the '70s with the British punk band Generation X. In the '80s, he went on to a solo career combining rock, pop, and punk into a distinct sound that transformed him and his musical partner, guitarist Steve Stevens, into icons. They have racked up multiple GRAMMY nominations, in addition to one gold, one double platinum, and four platinum albums thanks to hits like "Cradle Of Love," "Flesh For Fantasy," and "Eyes Without A Face."

But, unlike many legacy artists, Idol is anything but a relic. Billy continues to produce vital Idol music by collaborating with producers and songwriters — including Miley Cyrus — who share his forward-thinking vision. He will play a five-show Vegas residency in November, and filmmaker Jonas Akerlund is working on a documentary about Idol’s life.

His latest release is Cage , the second in a trilogy of annual four-song EPs. The title track is a classic Billy Idol banger expressing the desire to free himself from personal constraints and live a better life. Other tracks on Cage incorporate metallic riffing and funky R&B grooves.

Idol continues to reckon with his demons — they both grappled with addiction during the '80s — and the singer is open about those struggles on the record and the page. (Idol's 2014 memoir Dancing With Myself , details a 1990 motorcycle accident that nearly claimed a leg, and how becoming a father steered him to reject hard drugs. "Bitter Taste," from his last EP, The Roadside , reflects on surviving the accident.)

Although Idol and Stevens split in the late '80s — the skilled guitarist fronted Steve Stevens & The Atomic Playboys, and collaborated with Michael Jackson, Rick Ocasek, Vince Neil, and Harold Faltermeyer (on the GRAMMY-winning "Top Gun Anthem") — their common history and shared musical bond has been undeniable. The duo reunited in 2001 for an episode of " VH1 Storytellers " and have been back in the saddle for two decades. Their union remains one of the strongest collaborations in rock 'n roll history.

While there is recognizable personnel and a distinguishable sound throughout a lot of his work, Billy Idol has always pushed himself to try different things. Idol discusses his musical journey, his desire to constantly move forward, and the strong connection that he shares with Stevens.

Steve has said that you like to mix up a variety of styles, yet everyone assumes you're the "Rebel Yell"/"White Wedding" guy. But if they really listen to your catalog, it's vastly different.

Yeah, that's right. With someone like Steve Stevens, and then back in the day Keith Forsey producing... [Before that] Generation X actually did move around inside punk rock. We didn't stay doing just the Ramones two-minute music. We actually did a seven-minute song. [ Laughs ]. We did always mix things up.

Then when I got into my solo career, that was the fun of it. With someone like Steve, I knew what he could do. I could see whatever we needed to do, we could nail it. The world was my oyster musically.

"Cage" is a classic-sounding Billy Idol rocker, then "Running From The Ghost" is almost metal, like what the Devil's Playground album was like back in the mid-2000s. "Miss Nobody" comes out of nowhere with this pop/R&B flavor. What inspired that?

We really hadn't done anything like that since something like "Flesh For Fantasy" [which] had a bit of an R&B thing about it. Back in the early days of Billy Idol, "Hot In The City" and "Mony Mony" had girls [singing] on the backgrounds.

We always had a bit of R&B really, so it was actually fun to revisit that. We just hadn't done anything really quite like that for a long time. That was one of the reasons to work with someone like Sam Hollander [for the song "Rita Hayworth"] on The Roadside . We knew we could go [with him] into an R&B world, and he's a great songwriter and producer. That's the fun of music really, trying out these things and seeing if you can make them stick.

I listen to new music by veteran artists and debate that with some people. I'm sure you have those fans that want their nostalgia, and then there are some people who will embrace the newer stuff. Do you find it’s a challenge to reach people with new songs?

Obviously, what we're looking for is, how do we somehow have one foot in the past and one foot into the future? We’ve got the best of all possible worlds because that has been the modus operandi of Billy Idol.

You want to do things that are true to you, and you don't just want to try and do things that you're seeing there in the charts today. I think that we're achieving it with things like "Running From The Ghost" and "Cage" on this new EP. I think we’re managing to do both in a way.

** Obviously, "Running From The Ghost" is about addiction, all the stuff that you went through, and in "Cage" you’re talking about freeing yourself from a lot of personal shackles. Was there any one moment in your life that made you really thought I have to not let this weigh me down anymore ? **

I mean, things like the motorcycle accident I had, that was a bit of a wake up call way back. It was 32 years ago. But there were things like that, years ago, that gradually made me think about what I was doing with my life. I didn't want to ruin it, really. I didn't want to throw it away, and it made [me] be less cavalier.

I had to say to myself, about the drugs and stuff, that I've been there and I've done it. There’s no point in carrying on doing it. You couldn't get any higher. You didn't want to throw your life away casually, and I was close to doing that. It took me a bit of time, but then gradually I was able to get control of myself to a certain extent [with] drugs and everything. And I think Steve's done the same thing. We're on a similar path really, which has been great because we're in the same boat in terms of lyrics and stuff.

So a lot of things like that were wake up calls. Even having grandchildren and just watching my daughter enlarging her family and everything; it just makes you really positive about things and want to show a positive side to how you're feeling, about where you're going. We've lived with the demons so long, we've found a way to live with them. We found a way to be at peace with our demons, in a way. Maybe not completely, but certainly to where we’re enjoying what we do and excited about it.

[When writing] "Running From The Ghost" it was easy to go, what was the ghost for us? At one point, we were very drug addicted in the '80s. And Steve in particular is super sober [now]. I mean, I still vape pot and stuff. I don’t know how he’s doing it, but it’s incredible. All I want to be able to do is have a couple of glasses of wine at a restaurant or something. I can do that now.

I think working with people that are super talented, you just feel confident. That is a big reason why you open up and express yourself more because you feel comfortable with what's around you.

Did you watch Danny Boyle's recent Sex Pistols mini-series?

I did, yes.

You had a couple of cameos; well, an actor who portrayed you did. How did you react to it? How accurate do you think it was in portraying that particular time period?

I love Jonesy’s book, I thought his book was incredible. It's probably one of the best bio books really. It was incredible and so open. I was looking forward to that a lot.

It was as if [the show] kind of stayed with Steve [Jones’ memoir] about halfway through, and then departed from it. [John] Lydon, for instance, was never someone I ever saw acting out; he's more like that today. I never saw him do something like jump up in the room and run around going crazy. The only time I saw him ever do that was when they signed the recording deal with Virgin in front of Buckingham Palace. Whereas Sid Vicious was always acting out; he was always doing something in a horrible way or shouting at someone. I don't remember John being like that. I remember him being much more introverted.

But then I watched interviews with some of the actors about coming to grips with the parts they were playing. And they were saying, we knew punk rock happened but just didn't know any of the details. So I thought well, there you go . If ["Pistol" is] informing a lot of people who wouldn't know anything about punk rock, maybe that's what's good about it.

Maybe down the road John Lydon will get the chance to do John's version of the Pistols story. Maybe someone will go a lot deeper into it and it won't be so surface. But maybe you needed this just to get people back in the flow.

We had punk and metal over here in the States, but it feels like England it was legitimately more dangerous. British society was much more rigid.

It never went [as] mega in America. It went big in England. It exploded when the Pistols did that interview with [TV host Bill] Grundy, that lorry truck driver put his boot through his own TV, and all the national papers had "the filth and the fury" [headlines].

We went from being unknown to being known overnight. We waited a year, Generation X. We even told them [record labels] no for nine months to a year. Every record company wanted their own punk rock group. So it went really mega in England, and it affected the whole country – the style, the fashions, everything. I mean, the Ramones were massive in England. Devo had a No. 1 song [in England] with "Satisfaction" in '77. Actually, Devo was as big as or bigger than the Pistols.

You were ahead of the pop-punk thing that happened in the late '90s, and a lot of it became tongue-in-cheek by then. It didn't have the same sense of rebelliousness as the original movement. It was more pop.

It had become a style. There was a famous book in England called Revolt Into Style — and that's what had happened, a revolt that turned into style which then they were able to duplicate in their own way. Even recently, Billie Joe [Armstrong] did his own version of "Gimme Some Truth," the Lennon song we covered way back in 1977.

When we initially were making [punk] music, it hadn't become accepted yet. It was still dangerous and turned into a style that people were used to. We were still breaking barriers.

You have a band called Generation Sex with Steve Jones and Paul Cook. I assume you all have an easier time playing Pistols and Gen X songs together now and not worrying about getting spit on like back in the '70s?

Yeah, definitely. When I got to America I told the group I was putting it together, "No one spits at the audience."

We had five years of being spat on [in the UK], and it was revolting. And they spat at you if they liked you. If they didn't like it they smashed your gear up. One night, I remember I saw blood on my T-shirt, and I think Joe Strummer got meningitis when spit went in his mouth.

You had to go through a lot to become successful, it wasn't like you just kind of got up there and did a couple of gigs. I don't think some young rock bands really get that today.

With punk going so mega in England, we definitely got a leg up. We still had a lot of work to get where we got to, and rightly so because you find out that you need to do that. A lot of groups in the old days would be together three to five years before they ever made a record, and that time is really important. In a way, what was great about punk rock for me was it was very much a learning period. I really learned a lot [about] recording music and being in a group and even writing songs.

Then when I came to America, it was a flow, really. I also really started to know what I wanted Billy Idol to be. It took me a little bit, but I kind of knew what I wanted Billy Idol to be. And even that took a while to let it marinate.

You and Miley Cyrus have developed a good working relationship in the last several years. How do you think her fans have responded to you, and your fans have responded to her?

I think they're into it. It's more the record company that she had didn't really get "Night Crawling"— it was one of the best songs on Plastic Hearts , and I don't think they understood that. They wanted to go with Dua Lipa, they wanted to go with the modern, young acts, and I don't think they realized that that song was resonating with her fans. Which is a shame really because, with Andrew Watt producing, it's a hit song.

But at the same time, I enjoyed doing it. It came out really good and it's very Billy Idol. In fact, I think it’s more Billy Idol than Miley Cyrus. I think it shows you where Andrew Watt was. He was excited about doing a Billy Idol track. She's fun to work with. She’s a really great person and she works at her singing — I watched her rehearsing for the Super Bowl performance she gave. She rehearsed all Saturday morning, all Saturday afternoon, and Sunday morning and it was that afternoon. I have to admire her fortitude. She really cares.

I remember when you went on " Viva La Bam " back in 2005 and decided to give Bam Margera’s Lamborghini a new sunroof by taking a power saw to it. Did he own that car? Was that a rental?

I think it was his car.

Did he get over it later on?

He loved it. [ Laughs ] He’s got a wacky sense of humor. He’s fantastic, actually. I’m really sorry to see what he's been going through just lately. He's going through a lot, and I wish him the best. He's a fantastic person, and it's a shame that he's struggling so much with his addictions. I know what it's like. It's not easy.

Musically, what is the synergy like with you guys during the past 10 years, doing Kings and Queens of the Underground and this new stuff? What is your working relationship like now in this more sober, older, mature version of you two as opposed to what it was like back in the '80s?

In lots of ways it’s not so different because we always wrote the songs together, we always talked about what we're going to do together. It was just that we were getting high at the same time.We're just not getting [that way now] but we're doing all the same things.

We're still talking about things, still [planning] things:What are we going to do next? How are we going to find new people to work with? We want to find new producers. Let's be a little bit more timely about putting stuff out.That part of our relationship is the same, you know what I mean? That never got affected. We just happened to be overloading in the '80s.

The relationship’s… matured and it's carrying on being fruitful, and I think that's pretty amazing. Really, most people don't get to this place. Usually, they hate each other by now. [ Laughs ] We also give each other space. We're not stopping each other doing things outside of what we’re working on together. All of that enables us to carry on working together. I love and admire him. I respect him. He's been fantastic. I mean, just standing there on stage with him is always a treat. And he’s got an immensely great sense of humor. I think that's another reason why we can hang together after all this time because we've got the sense of humor to enable us to go forward.

There's a lot of fan reaction videos online, and I noticed a lot of younger women like "Rebel Yell" because, unlike a lot of other '80s alpha male rock tunes, you're talking about satisfying your lover.

It was about my girlfriend at the time, Perri Lister. It was about how great I thought she was, how much I was in love with her, and how great women are, how powerful they are.

It was a bit of a feminist anthem in a weird way. It was all about how relationships can free you and add a lot to your life. It was a cry of love, nothing to do with the Civil War or anything like that. Perri was a big part of my life, a big part of being Billy Idol. I wanted to write about it. I'm glad that's the effect.

Is there something you hope people get out of the songs you've been doing over the last 10 years? Do you find yourself putting out a message that keeps repeating?

Well, I suppose, if anything, is that you can come to terms with your life, you can keep a hold of it. You can work your dreams into reality in a way and, look, a million years later, still be enjoying it.

The only reason I'm singing about getting out of the cage is because I kicked out of the cage years ago. I joined Generation X when I said to my parents, "I'm leaving university, and I'm joining a punk rock group." And they didn't even know what a punk rock group was. Years ago, I’d write things for myself that put me on this path, so that maybe in 2022 I could sing something like "Cage" and be owning this territory and really having a good time. This is the life I wanted.

The original UK punk movement challenged societal norms. Despite all the craziness going on throughout the world, it seems like a lot of modern rock bands are afraid to do what you guys were doing. Do you think we'll see a shift in that?

Yeah. Art usually reacts to things, so I would think eventually there will be a massive reaction to the pop music that’s taken over — the middle of the road music, and then this kind of right wing politics. There will be a massive reaction if there's not already one. I don’t know where it will come from exactly. You never know who's gonna do [it].

Peter Frampton Confirms New Dates on 'Never Say Never' Tour

Additionally, Frampton’s historic performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall will be released as a live album on September 1 via UMe—pre-order/pre-save here . The record features nine live performances with Frampton’s long-standing band of Rob Arthur, Adam Lester, Dan Wojciechowski and Steve Mackey, and includes tracks “Show Me the Way,” “Baby, I Love Your Way,” “Do You Feel Like We Do?” and more. The legendary performance is currently streaming on PBS as part of their Pledge Drive.

Peter Frampton is one of the most celebrated artists and guitarists in rock history. In 2007, Frampton won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album for Fingerprints and in 2014 was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame. He received the prestigious Les Paul Innovation Award from NAMM’s TEC Awards in 2019 and his album All Blues was #1 for fifteen weeks on Billboard’s Blues Chart. In 2020 Frampton was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, his autobiography Do You Feel Like I Do?: A Memoir debuted on The New York Times Bestsellers list, and his 2021 album Frampton Forgets The Words was released to widespread critical acclaim.

Most recently, Frampton announced that on July 28 Intervention Records will release Frampton@50, a numbered limited-edition vinyl box set featuring Frampton’s essential 1972-1975 studio releases Wind of Change, Frampton’s Camel and Frampton.

Later this year, Frampton will appear on Dolly Parton’s forthcoming album, Rockstar (out November 17), as the only artist featured on two tracks.

After 47 years, Frampton Comes Alive! remains one of the top-selling live records of all time selling over 17 million worldwide.

Peter Frampton announces ironically titled Never Say Never US tour

Nearly four years after his Farewell Tour finished in the US, Peter Frampton will be hitting North America's freeways one more time

Peter Frampton has announced a US tour. The run of dates kicks off at the Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, OH, and climaxes nearly two months later at the Amphitheater in Sandy, UT, on August 19. Full dates below.

Frampton wrapped up the Finale: The Farewell Tour run of US dates at the Concord Pavilion in Concord, California in October 2019, and was able to complete a run of UK shows late last year, but many expected the Farewell Tour dates to be the last time the former Humble Pie guitarist took to the road. Frampton was diagnosed with inclusion-body myositis after a fall in 2011, and had expected the condition to affect his ability to play.

“At the end of every Finale Tour show I did say, 'Never Say Never' and I am always full of hope for the impossible," says Frampton. "I'm very pleased to let you know that I am feeling strong and my fingers are still roaming the fretboard. Every note I play now has more meaning and soul. I love playing live and this fighter wants to stay in the ring for as long as he can. I'm so happy to be able to see you all one more time this summer."

In 2019, Frampton told Rolling Stone , “I want to obviously go out there playing my best at all times until I can’t. That’s why this is the farewell tour."

Tickets for the Never Say Never tour go on sale on April 14 .

Last month, Frampton launched Frampton@50, a limited-edition vinyl box set containing his early 1970s' albums Wind of Change, Frampton’s Camel and Frampton . The numbered set is limited to just 2500 copies and comes with a reproduction of the promo poster included with early copies of Frampton’s Camel, as well as a certificate of authenticity.

The box set is released on July 28, and is available to pre-order now . A signed version – limited to just 250 copies – is available from the Peter Frampton webstore , with proceeds going to the Peter Frampton Myositis Research Fund .

Peter Frampton on His Rock Hall Induction: ‘My Phone Hasn’t Stopped Blowing Up’

After three decades of eligibility where he didn’t appear on a single ballot, Peter Frampton was starting to think he’d never be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . But once voters finally had to chance to select him earlier this year, things changed very quickly. He learned the good news over the weekend when his manager phoned him up to say he made it. “I was absolutely blown away,” Frampton says. “My mind has been sort of a blur ever since I found out, especially since the announcement [on American Idol ] last night. My phone hasn’t stopped blowing up since.”

The afternoon after the news broke, Frampton spoke with Rolling Stone about the Hall of Fame, his fellow inductees, what he’s planning for the big night, upcoming tour plans, his battle with inclusion body myositis, and his hope that Cher changes her mind and shows up on induction night.

The thing that blew me away the most was not actually getting in — even though that is a phenomenal, unbelievable thing. It’s the amount of people who voted for me [in the fan vote]. You don’t quite understand where you’re at until you look at the amount of people who voted for you. Those are the people I need to thank the most. That was a real wonderful shock.

I think part of the problem is that rock critics had a huge voice in the nominating process for a long time. You had such an insanely big record in the Seventies, and it attracted so many young fans, that you maybe turned off some critics. Yeah. Sometimes you can be too big. Hootie & the Blowfish, same thing. You have this ginormous selling record, and it works against you. It becomes too much of a good thing. Framptom Comes Alive! turned into Rubik’s Cube very quickly. Look what happened to that. But I can open one of those very quickly now since I’ve learned the secret.

Had you attended an induction before last year? I went when Metallica got in. It was a much smaller event in those days compared to last year’s. I’ve watched every one, all the inductees over the years, whether it be live or on film. I always thought, “Maybe… Who knows?”

It’s a cool class this year with Cher, Foreigner, Dave Matthews, Ozzy… It’s very cool. I think because of the new team that’s running it, headed by John Sykes…having known a little bit and spoken with some of them, things were not that realistic before…there were a lot of missed opportunities before, and some artists that weren’t maybe ready to go in.

I loved seeing John Mayall’s name. He really deserves it. Absolutely. There I was in the front row of the Flamingo Club in London watching him and Eric Clapton, and him and Peter Green. I would always go up there. He has always been a champion of so many incredible guitar players, as well as being this guy that never faltered, never went commercial, never did anything but the blues. I applaud him for that. He very much deserves to get in.

There’s also people that grumble about R&B and hip-hop artists getting inducted. To me, it makes perfect sense to bring in Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest. Maybe it should be called the Music Hall of Fame as opposed to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They’re king of stuck now. But I agree. Mary J. Blige is an unbelievable talent. They definitely both deserve to get in.

Shortly before she was placed on the ballot, Cher basted the Hall of Fame and said she wouldn’t go even if she got in. I’m hoping she changes her mind. Oh, go on, Cher! We want you there. It’s okay. Look at how long I waited. I didn’t wait as long as you, but it’s okay. You’re in now. You’re in! Come on, Cher! [ Laughs ]

Do you have any thoughts on who might induct you or what songs you might play? Not right now. I haven’t been told. The basic thing I need to be told is how long musically I have, and how long speech-wise I have. And then I can make those decisions. I obviously have people in mind, but I haven’t spoken to anybody yet.

It’s going to be in Cleveland, which is pretty cool since it’s a great rock town, and you have so many fans there. Oh yeah. I’ve always loved Cleveland. I did my time in Cincinnati for a while. I lived there. They can’t take the Ohio out of me.

How do you think it’ll feel to stand at the podium, take the award, and finally give your speech? Oh, my stomach turned over when you said that. [ Laughs ] I don’t know. I’ll prepare for that moment. With great gratitude, I’ll step up to that microphone and accept what I never thought would happen for me.

You just finished a tour a few weeks back. How did that go? Fantastic. In fact, it looks like we’re going to do another two-week run sometime in the summer. I don’t have any info right now. It’s been incredible going back out after I quit. [ Laughs ] I think the crowds are so behind me since I don’t want to give up. I am a fighter. I’m going to be playing until that time comes when I can’t.

We all have our battles. We’re all fighting something. I’m just a person who is out there, doing the best he can, and brining awareness to IBM [inclusion body myositis], raising money where I can. We’ve got a lovely foundation at Johns Hopkins, the Peter Frampton Fund . People are still sending in money, which is wonderful. It’ll help us with clinical trials. Those are expensive. I’m raising money for them so we can find that magic bullet.

I’m very optimistic. I’m speaking with my doctors all the time, and hearing all the new stuff that’s coming along, and the new technologies the scientists are finding in the lab. It looks like something could be coming around the corner. We’re always hoping for that.

If your voice works and your hand works, why shouldn’t you be onstage? Exactly. I really want to share my time between three things right now. I have a record to make. I’ve been writing for six years or more. I have material up the yin yang. But only a few classics. [ Laughs ] I’m waiting a little longer, another month or two, and then I’m going to go in the studio.

In June, I’m going to England to do some stuff for my documentary. We’re going to go back to where I was born, and where I went to school with David Bowie, and the house where my brother and I grew up. We were doing some interviews with people last week in Los Angeles for the doc. We now have full funding. It’s full steam ahead. Those three projects are what we’re working on this year.

This year's crop of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees is stacked with legendary performers, from Cher to Mary J. Blige and Jimmy Buffett. And several have graced Ohio 's concert venues over the years.

Rock legend Peter Frampton , though, carries a more personal tie to the Buckeye State: He was a Cincinnati resident for over a decade.

Born in Beckenham, England, Frampton first rose to fame as a member of British rock bands The Herd and Humble Pie in the '60s. He then found success as a solo artist, with his breakthrough 1976 album "Frampton Comes Alive!" claiming best-selling status that year and entering the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2020.

Frampton, 74, joins the prestigious Rock & Roll Hall of Fame after 26 years of eligibility as a solo artist.

“I think I’m a little bit in shock, and speechless,” Frampton told Billboard about being inducted. “I never expected this. People always said, ‘You should be in.’ ... So mixed emotions, because it’s something that I just never expected, whereas other people did for me."

A look at Peter Frampton's Cincinnati ties, two legacies

After revealing his diagnosis of an incurable muscle disease in 2019, Frampton played what some thought would be his last show in Cincinnati that summer at Riverbend Music Center. It was part of his Peter Frampton Finale, The Farewell Tour.

Frampton, who called Indian Hill home from 2000 to 2013 before moving to Nashville, embarked on the tour after being diagnosed with inclusion body myositis (IBM) four years prior. A condition marked by muscle weakness, inflammation and fatigue, the artist intended to perform his farewell tour while he could still play guitar.

“You are the biggest crowd of every amphitheater that we played on this tour,” he said during his 2019 Cincinnati show that drew a crowd of 10,000, according to a Riverbend spokesperson at the time.

Frampton also reminisced about Cincinnati during the concert, per a 2019 Enquirer article . He shared his affection for the Graeter’s in Mariemont, and he said he had crushed some of the ice cream backstage.

“I had to loosen my belt a notch,” he joked. “I always look forward to coming here to Cincinnati, because it has been my home for many, many years.”

Frampton defied odds a few years later, returning to Riverbend as part of his Never Say Never Tour in June 2023.

“To say that Peter has made history in music and in medicine is accurate in every way. He has now two legacies,” Frampton’s rheumatologist, Dr. Lisa Christopher-Stine, told The San Diego Union-Tribune this month.

After his 2023 tour, the veteran guitarist announced a spring 2024 run with shows from March through April.

"I don’t want to give up my passion and will play as long as I physically can. Hope to see you in 2024," Frampton wrote on X on Dec. 1, 2023.

Where to watch the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony

The ceremony to honor the new Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class will take place Oct. 19 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland. It will stream live on Disney+ and will air on Hulu the next day. There will also be an airing on ABC at a later date.

Of course, Frampton did his part, too; during his most recent concert tour he spoke about the nomination, putting a QR code up on the video screen to take fans to the voting site in real time.

“That was wonderful,” he recalls. “Every night when I said, ‘I got this phone call a couple months ago…and my managers told me I’m being nominated for the Rock….’ I never got out ‘Fame’ — they just went berserk, the audience, every night, and it made me feel like, ‘Well, they think I deserve to be in.’ So that was very, very nice from the word go. It’s quite uncanny we would be touring during the public voting, so every night I could hopefully get a few hundred out of the couple of thousand, three thousand that were in the audience. And it made a difference.”

In the musical influence category, meanwhile, Frampton played with Alexis Korner during the mid-‘60s and was also a fan of John Mayall. “I was in the front row at the Flamingo and all the clubs, watching Eric (Clapton) and so many other guitar players — Peter Green, Mick (Taylor) from the (Rolling) Stones, so that means a lot to me,” Frampton notes. “It’s just amazing that (Mayall) was a spawning ground for so many great English guitar players.”

Frampton – who began as a teen star in England before achieving worldwide fame in the band Humble Pie and especially with his Frampton Comes Alive! album in 1976 — has begun thinking loosely about the induction ceremony night on Oct. 19 in Cleveland, though with no concrete plans yet. “I’m thinking about people to invite to play with me and all that kind of stuff he says,” noting that number one on the list will be Sheryl Crow, who “championed” Frampton by including him in her induction performance last year in Brooklyn.

Meanwhile, Frampton — who continues to work in defiance of the degenerative inclusion body myositis (IBM) disorder he’s been battling during the past six or so years — is continuing with his other work. He’s planning a trip to England during June as well as a filmed concert performance for the career documentary he’s been working on. He’s also writing songs for a new album, his follow-up to 2021’s instrumental set Frampton Forgets the Words. “It’s just got to be the best one I’ve ever done,” he says. Another leg of touring is also a possibility, he says, “but I don’t know when that’s going to be at this time. We’re still looking at availabilities and things like that.”

Peter Frampton 'overwhelmed' with Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction

There's always a Nashville connection, and the 2024 class of inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is no exception.

Joining Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne and A Tribe Called Quest in the performer category is Nashville resident Peter Frampton .

Frampton got his early start playing in bands such as Humble Pie and the Herd, but is best known for his groundbreaking 1976 live recording "Frampton Comes Alive."

The 2024 class of rock hall inductees was announced Sunday night live on ABC during the “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night” episode of “American Idol,” where finalists sang songs from legendary rock hall inductees.

Frampton took to his social media accounts to say that this nomination was something he never expected.

His Instagram post continued, "I am overwhelmed that I will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, especially alongside so many incredible artists who have gone before me. I can’t thank everyone enough for voting for me. You are the best. Somebody pinch me please!!"

John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a statement, "Rock & Roll is an ever-evolving amalgam of sounds that impacts culture and moves generations. This diverse group of inductees each broke down musical barriers and influenced countless artists that followed in their footsteps."

The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland. The 2024 ceremony will stream live on Disney+ with a special airing on ABC at a later date and will be available on Hulu the next day.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artists or other musical figures who will be inducted in 2024. It’s a diverse list that stretches from R&B/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton to pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, and from ’70s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner and Ozzy Osbourne to ’90s icons the Dave Matthews Band , Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest.

For the first time, the inductees were announced as part of an “American Idol” broadcast, during a Sunday night episode themed around the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The eight “performer” inductees are the ones selected by a ballot sent out to the Hall’s voters after the 15 nominees were announced on Feb. 10.

That leaves seven nominees from this year who will have to wait for another crack at getting in: Mariah Carey, Jane’s Addiction, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz and the duo Eric B. and Rakim.

One question mark now is how Cher will react to her induction. Just last December, in an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” she said, “You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” At that point, though, she had never received so much as a nomination, so the odds favor her changing her tune on that vow, now that she got voted in her first time actually appearing on the ballot.

Five out of the eight voted in this year were first-time nominees: Osbourne, Cher, Frampton, Foreigner and Kool & the Gang.

A Tribe Called Quest got in on the hip-hop collective’s third time on the ballot (and their third year in a row being nominated). Blige and Matthews both got in on their second try (she was previously up for it in 2021; DMB had a prior nod in 2020).

Frampton, for his part, beyond the merits of having had one of the biggest albums of all time, may be a sentimental favorite this year, due to his being in the acknowledged twilight of his musical career. He has been out on a farewell tour off and on since 2019, following his diagnosis with the debilitating disease inclusion body myositis in 2015. The rocker just wrapped up the last round of dates he had scheduled, although he has not said there won’t be more.

Osbourne becomes a second-time inductee this year; his group Black Sabbath was voted in all the way back in 2006. Sometimes there is contention over whether singers who are already in the Hall of Fame, as group members, really need to be pushed to the front of the line as solo artists, too, ahead of other contenders. In any case, voters decided that Osbourne’s post-Sabbath career established him as one of rock’s major icons, even apart from his initial round of influence and success as a frontman.

De Passe is getting her flowers for a career that included a long stint as one of the major players at Motown, developing the Jackson 5 into superstars and signing the Commodores, among other triumphs, before becoming a film and TV executive. She was profiled by Variety about her long and wide-ranging career in 2022.

Motown is also being celebrated with the induction of Whitfield, a songwriter and producer whose astonishing catalog of hits in the ’60s and ’70s included “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “War,” “Ball of Confusion,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “I Can’t Get Next to You” and “Car Wash.” He died in 2008.

Coming on under the “musical influences” umbrella, Alexis Korner may be the name among this year’s inductees that is least known to contemporary music fans. He was a major player in the British blues scene of the 1960s and became a popular broadcaster as well; he died in 1984 at age 55. With John Mayall also being selected by the committee for the same honor, it’s an unexpected banner year for British blues-rockers.
