Washington is a powerhouse of grape growth, and the state's wine industry is booming. But since most vineyards are way out east, farther than most will travel for a good drink, wineries have set up satellite outposts, congregating particularly in Woodinville, a short jaunt northeast of Seattle.

Woodinville Wine Country is exploding with more than 100 tasting rooms and wineries. That's staggering, making it tough to get a handle on the best. That's where this guide comes in.

From the household-name producers with grand estates to the family-owned outfits tucked away in strip malls, here are the best places to drink wine in Woodinville.

Note: Map points are listed geographically, not ranked by preference. Don't see your favorite tasting room on the map? Show it some love in the comments, send us an email , or start a forum thread in its honor.

"A place where sleeves are rolled

up, grapes get crushed and the magic of great Washington wine happens.  Each stop is as individual as the winemakers themselves."

On a hill-top on the north side of town lies the true heartbeat of  Woodinville’s famed wine country, the Woodinville Warehouse Wineries. This enclave of over 25+ production wineries and tasting rooms is home to more boutique wineries per square foot than any wine region in the world, all within steps of each other.  The word “Warehouse” hardly begins to describe this unique place.

For all levels of interest, the Woodinville Warehouse Wineries are sure to spark a greater appreciation for Washington State wine.  Since the early 1990’s it’s been the premier start-up area for boutique wineries and home to many of Washington State’s most coveted brands.  It’s a place where sleeves are rolled up, grapes get crushed and the magic of great Washington wine happens. Each stop is as individual as the winemakers themselves. In fact, the person pouring your wine is probably also involved in making it.

Unique experiences and unexpected surprises await patrons around every corner. You may find yourself tasting in a cellar, surrounded by barrels of aging wine, seeing first-hand these artisans at work or find yourself in a cozy tasting room surrounded by a gallery of fine art. Your next stop may take you through a secret door where you’ll meet the winemaker crafting his next vintage or enjoy a tasting flight outside at one of the fresh air patio locations.

The Woodinville Warehouse Wineries invite you to put your fingers on the pulse of Woodinville’s best kept secret and discover where many of your favorite Washington wines are made!

The Best Wineries to Visit in Woodinville

By Sean P. Sullivan January 11, 2023

woodinville wine tour

Bordeaux-style wines meet picnic priorities at Matthews Winery.

Image: Brandon Hill

Western Washington's  epicenter of wine dates back to the 1970s. Today, change is sweeping the area, from new tasting districts to the uncertain future of Chateau Ste. Michelle. In other words, Woodinville has lots of exciting new developments, but also some reasons to return, time and again, to taste.

Hollywood District  /   Warehouse District  /  Downtown and Woodin Creek Village / Eastern Washington Outposts

Hollywood District

Betz family winery.

Now firmly in its third decade, Betz Family devotes itself to high-end Bordeaux and Rhône-style wines. The cabernet sauvignon is exquisite. Four syrahs showcase differences in the state’s best vineyards and appellations, while the grenache-heavy Besoleil drinks like a cup of fresh fruit. The tasing room is currently only open to members of the winery’s list.

Chateau Lill

Greg Lill has reclaimed the estate-style building that once housed his original winery, DeLille Cellars. Today it’s a scenic hub for weddings and events, but also conducts tastings of wines sourced from other well-known local wineries, but poured under Chateau Lill’s label. In warmer months, tastings happen in the garden, or you can stroll the property, glass in hand.

Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery

Yes, some or all of this wine region’s foundational chateau is potentially up for sale, but the winery is committed to its 2023 concert calendar season. And, uncertainty aside, it remains a wonderful place to visit in Woodinville. Throughout its run, Ste. Michelle has been the state’s leader in producing good wines at any price. A spot-on $12 bottle? A stunning single-vineyard sauvignon blanc? The winery has both. Its $10 Dry Riesling is easily the best value in the state if not the country.

Jaine Cottage

Mark Ryan Winery

Winemaker Mark McNeilly made a name for himself in the early 2000s fashioning uniformly excellent red blends, with ripe fruit and hefty tannic structures, from esteemed Ciel du Cheval Vineyard on Red Mountain. He’s still at it; few do it better. This year, the tasting room will relocate to a new building on the campus of the former Redhook Brewery.

Matthews Winery

Matthews is one of the longest tenured wineries in Woodinville. Yes, with its “inspired by Bordeaux” tagline, you know cabernet sauvignon is important here, but the sauvignon blanc is also a standout. The winery recently brought in a new winemaking team from Quilceda Creek .

Novelty Hill–Januik

woodinville wine tour

Sparkman Cellars

Warehouse district, avennia wine.

In just 10 years, Avennia has established itself as one of the state’s top wineries, dedicated to using old vine grapes and picking early, giving the releases a distinctly old-world, savory edge, but with plenty of fruit. Recently the winery has added some Red Mountain offerings to its repertoire.

Kevin White Winery

Owner and winemaker Kevin White’s day job allows him to offer the best quality-to-price wines in the state. But the word is out on his pure, fruit-driven wines. Some, such as the feels-like-stealing ‘Blue Label’ wine, can sell out in less than a week.  A new tasting room offers a gently upgraded experience.

Passing Time Winery

Pomum cellars/idlico, quiddity wines.

woodinville wine tour

Giant chess (and regular-size pours) at Quiddity Wines.

Sightglass Cellars

Sean Boyd, previously the longtime winemaker at Woodinville Wine Cellars, excels with stainless steel–aged sauvignon blanc and chardonnay, as well as cultishly good red wines.

Two Vintners

W.t. vintners.

woodinville wine tour

W.T. Vintners winemaker Jeff Lindsay-Thorsen and, in his tasting room, the vending machine of our dreams.

Downtown and Woodin Creek Village

Baer winery, brian carter cellars.

This winery, now open in the new-ish Woodin Creek Village , dedicates itself to the art of blending. The flagship cabernet sauvignon–based Solesce is one for the cellar. That may not sound radical, but the winemaker here likes to experiment, exploring styles from Spain, Italy, Bordeaux, the Rhône, and beyond.

More Great Woodinville Tasting Rooms

Can’t make it to Walla Walla ? Plenty of wineries from Eastern Washington have set up satellite locations around here.

woodinville wine tour

Walla Walla–based Long Shadows added this outpost on our side of the mountains.

Image: Courtesy Long Shadows

  • Long Shadows Great wine in a handsome tasting room.
  • Fidelitas Wines One of the new occupants of the former Redhook Brewery campus.
  • Bookwalter Winery The Tri-Cities–area   winery is known for its high-end reds and whites.
  • L’Ecole No 41 The stalwart added its first non–Walla Walla tasting room in downtown Woodinville.
  • Valdemar Estates Part of Walla Walla’s impressive new guard also has a downtown location.
  • Pepper Bridge Another great high-end Walla Walla winery set up shop behind the Hollywood Schoolhouse.

Methods :  To compile this list, Sean P. Sullivan selected wineries based on the overall quality of their wines, focusing largely on those that are local to that area, versus satellite tasting rooms.

Woodinville Wine Tasting Guide: Best Wineries in Woodinville

' src=

Woodinville, Washington is a small, emerging, wine region near Seattle. Woodinville is known for estate wineries, tasting rooms, and great restaurants.

This Woodinville wine tasting guide will explain the best wineries is Woodinville and tips for visiting.

Washington wines are beginning to get attention on the international stage, thanks to Woodinville wine country.  Many of the Woodinville vineyards in the nearby Columbia valley which is a budding viticultural area.

Some links on this blog are affiliate links, meaning I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you if you make a purchase through them. All opinions are my own, and I only recommend products and services I personally use and believe in. Thanks for your support!

Best Wineries in Woodinville to Visit

The hardest part of Woodinville wine tasting is choosing which wineries to visit. Overall, there is a wide variety of tasting options.

Some are small tasting rooms, while others are large estates. To see the best wineries in Woodinville, plan to visit a variety of locations.

I have visited each of the below wineries multiple times and can assure you, they are amazing.

1. Delille Cellars

Delille, one of the best wineries in woodinville

Delille has my favorite wine out of all the wineries in Woodinville. Their red blend, D2, is one of my favorite wines from anywhere in the world.

The brand-new tasting facility is modern, chic and extremely comfortable. Since this winery is popular, be sure to book reservations a couple weeks ahead of time.

Efeste tasting room in Washington

Efeste is known for amazing red wines, especially cabernet sauvignon. Their state-of-the-art wine making facility doubles as a tasting room. Enjoy a wine flight among their large barrels and wine makers.

While most of these wineries are in the Hollywood district of Woodinville, Efeste is actually in the nearby warehouse district.

My favorite wine from Efeste is Big Papa, which makes a great Father’s Day gift.

3. Columbia Winery

woodinville wine tour

This winery is one of the largest in Woodinville. It can be found in many local grocery stores and restaurants. I have even seen Columbia served internationally.

Columbia Winery is a large estate with multiple banquet rooms and patios. Since the tasting area is large, this winery is great for groups and last-minute reservations. All the wines are amazing, but my favorite is the Viognier.

Columbia is one of my favorite Woodinville wineries, and I am even a wine club member.

4. Chateau Ste Michelle

Across the street from Columbia, find the gorgeous Chateau Ste Michelle property. This winery has the best grounds and facilities out of all the wineries in Woodinville. The large Chateau building and tasting room are picturesque and remind me of Tuscany.

In addition to great wines, Chateau Ste Michelle hosts fun events such as concerts and wine blending classes.

5. Matthews Winery

Matthews winery woodinville

Matthew’s winery is a unique contrast to the above options.  A bit out of town, this winery has a large property and farmhouse feel. Most of the tasting space at Matthews is outdoors, which cannot be beat in the summer.

If the weather is good, plant to get a bottle of Rose and enjoy their relaxing patio.

6. Fidelitas

Fidelitas wine tasting in Woodinville

Fidelitas is a small tasting room in the center of Woodinville. The smaller facility makes for an intimate experience and one-on-one attention from the staff.

Since this winery is in town, it is great to start or end your day next to the great restaurant options.

Other Alcohol Tastings in Woodinville

In addition to the amazing Woodinville wine tasting, I recommend enjoying another beverage tasting as well. While I can drink wine all day, it can be fun to mix it up with a whiskey, beer or cider tasting.

Woodinville Whiskey

Woodinville whiskey

Calling all whiskey lovers! Woodinville Whiskey is a craft-whiskey distillery in Woodinville. They create a variety of Whiskeys onsite and offer tastings daily.

For a fun gift or souvenir, purchase on of their personalized Whiskey bottles with your name on it.

Metier Brewing

Metier Brewing is my favorite brewery in Washington. They are the first black-owner breweries in the state and continuously support the community. Additionally, they create fantastic, inventive beers.

When you visit, be sure to chat with the brewers and staff to learn about their amazing company and brewing process.

Locust Cider

woodinville wine tour

I am a huge cider fan. Since Washington is known for apples, our ciders are exceptional as well. Locust cider offers tasting flights of various sizes.

Be sure to try the vanilla bean cider, it is my favorite.

Food for After Your Woodinville Wine Tasting

In addition to amazing Woodinville wine tasting, take advantage of the amazing restaurants as well. The below restaurants are casual but delicious.

They are the perfect way to round out a day of visiting the best wineries in Woodinville.

Vivi Pizzeria

Vivi serves up delicious Italian food, including their famous wood-fired pizza. Since Vivi Pizzeria is on open table, it is easy to create a reservation for your group.

My favorite dishes are the brie pizza, tanina pizza, and penne alla vodka.

The Commons

The Commons is a great restaurant that serves contemporary-American food. It is a great spot for weekend brunch or dinner.

Since the commons does not take reservations, put your name in then walk around Woodinville to kill some time.

Hollywood Tavern

woodinville wine tour

Hollywood Tavern is my favorite restaurant in Woodinville. It has amazing ambiance, service, and delicious food.

My favorite dishes at Hollywood tavern are the fried pickles, the burger and the boozy milkshakes.

One Day Woodinville Wine Tasting Itinerary

Woodinville wine tasting

  • Get brunch at the Commons . I recommend the breakfast sandwich and mimosa flight. Since they do not take reservations, plan to walk around and kill some time.
  • Visit Chateau Ste Michelle winery . Drive down the street to the beautiful Chateau Ste Michelle winery. Get in line for their complimentary tour and tasting. Enjoy the grounds and great wine.
  • Head to Columbia winery . Cross the street to Columbia for another tasting and lunch. Since Columbia offers food, order a cheese plate or flatbread for a midday snack. Order a flight with your meal and relax.
  • Shop “downtown” Woodinville . Between all the wineries are charming local shops to visit and take a break from drinking.
  • Go to Delille tasting room . For the final winery of the day, visit the new DeLille tasting room and enjoy their award-winning wines.
  • Dinner at Vivi Pizzeria . To wrap up a busy day, enjoy a pizza dinner at Vivi pizzeria then turn in for the night. I recommend the brie pizza for a cheesy, unique take on pizza.

Where to Stay Near Woodinville Washington

As mentioned above, Woodinville is located near Seattle. Since it only a one-hour drive, it is possible to commute from the city. To stay closer, opt to stay in nearby Bellevue.

If you plan to drink, be sure to book a local accommodation or arrange for a rideshare. A small afternoon of wine tasting can turn into a good buzz quickly. (I know from experience 😉)

The W Bellevue

If your trip entails a full tour of Washington state , staying in nearby Bellevue may be better suited. The W by Marriott is a luxury hotel in the center of Bellevue.

Bellevue is the luxury little sister to Seattle with amazing shopping and restaurants.

To get to Woodinville from Bellevue, drive or rideshare for a quick 20 minutes.

2023 Rosé of Sangiovese : We’re very serious about this festive and flavorful dry wine. Quality Rosé starts with grapes grown specifically for this purpose. Our Rosé is a deliberate result of careful winemaking, not an incidental byproduct of red production. Our Rosé is conceived in the vineyard at pruning and matured to be crisp, lean and fruity – it is the most winningest wine at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, ever . Features an expressive nose with melon rind and maraschino cherry notes that compliment its strawberry nuances. The well-structured palate is at once full-bodied yet also bright and fruity. A remarkably appealing, dry, food-friendly Rosé.

See our iconic Rosé of Sangiovese go “ From Grape to Glass ” in this video

Bayernmoor Cellars

Each vintage of Bayernmoor Cellars’ Rosé is made by owners and winemakers, Larry and Kim Harris, to be a reflection of those warm summer days in the PNW, with the ocean breeze and summer heat soothing your soul. Our 2022 Rosé is a 50/50 blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre with just a hint of residual sugar creating a well-balanced and soft mouthfeel. Notes of strawberry, tangerine and rose on the nose. On the palate, a perfect blend of strawberry, honey, ginseng and white peach. This wine is the perfect companion for a fun day out in the sunshine. Pair this with fruit salad, grilled salmon, or your favorite BBQ chicken!

Castillo de Feliciana Vineyard and Winery

2022 Rosé of Tempranillo : was produced from 100% Castillo de Feliciana Estate Tempranillo. Whole cluster pressed, fermented cool, and cellared in stainless steel to promote varietal character and freshness. Aromatically, the wine is nuanced with strawberry, peach fruit, honeydew melon and banana skin. In the mouth, the palate is creamy, soft, and pleasantly silky smooth. Enjoy our “patio style” rose’ through the warmer months of the year and into the fall with your favorite lighter fare.

Cougar Crest Estate Winery

Cat’s Away Rosé : This rosé is a blend of 71% Cab Franc and 29% Merlot, delivering a floral perfume of peach blossom and a hint of cherry pie. In the mid-palate, this wine remains true to its Rosé nature: light and playful like a mischievous cat, but strong with bold flavors of strawberry, apricot and Rainer cherry with a hint of pineapple. The finish is crisp and refreshing, and just like good head scritches will leave you wanting more. This label celebrates the life of our winery cat, Whiskey. She dutifully kept birds and gophers out of our estate grown Riesling for 17 years. The Cabernet Franc and Merlot used in this refreshing blend came from the Cougar Hills Vineyard, which is a stone’s throw from the site of the original Seven Hills Vineyard planted more than 30 years ago, that began the Walla Walla legacy of quality vineyards. Tucked into the southwest corner of the Walla Walla AVA, as the name implies, there is a hill at Cougar Hills. The elevation averages 800 feet at the base and rises to 845 at the top of the hill. The slope of the hill faces north, which in the summertime is facing the sun.

Valdemar Estates (Pintxo by Valdemar)

Conde Valdemar Rosé : Taste the feeling of Spring…Our Rosé is so popular that we now have it available all year round! The release date of the new vintage varies from year to year because of this. We are currently serving the 2022 vintage.

It has a soft pink color and a delicate aroma filled with fresh flowers and red berries… if we were to define this wine in just one word, it would be elegance. A sweet and vibrant wine that will not disappoint. It exhibits an elegant aroma, where notes of fine flowers, rose water, and a selection of fresh fruits, including wild strawberry and raspberry. On the palate, it offers a subtle entry and an exceptionally smooth mouthfeel, with floral reminiscences and a hint of spice. It finishes with a fresh and silky aftertaste.

We like to pair our rosé with smoked fish, soups, creams, and salads. It also goes well with Mediterranean cuisine such as rice plates, pastas, and dishes with spicy or bittersweet sauces.

Quiddity Wines

2023 RISIBILITY (Rosé of Mourvèdre): This RISIBILITY is made the same as prior vintages, 100% Mourvèdre from the Sugarloaf Vineyard in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA. It was whole cluster, direct press, and vinified in stainless steel.

It is a bit more delicate and nuanced than past vintages. You can see this straight away from how the pale pink color shimmers in the glass. It has a delicate nose of juicy pink grapefruit and floral aromas. It leads with notes of grapefruit, strawberry, and passion fruit on the front palette and finishes with slightly savory, herbal and fennel notes on the back palette and, maybe, just a hint of orange creamsicle. It smells, tastes, and feels like a seaside breeze wafting over Provencal flower garden.
