How to Visit the World Islands in Dubai

The World Islands, or ‘The World’, are a collection of in-progress man-made islands off the coast of Dubai which are being built to resemble the world map. Each island will be themed around the part of the world it resembles. While The World is still being built, a few sections are complete and open for tourists.

So, how can you visit the World Islands in Dubai? Only one island is open for visitors: Lebanon Island. You can visit Lebanon Island by taking a boat from Jumeriah’s Fishing Harbour. Once you’re on the island, you can visit a range of bars, restaurants, lounges, pools, and beaches.

This guide will explore everything you need to know about visiting the World Islands in Dubai, and how to make the most of the experience!

Seeing The World

While you can’t visit most of The World, you can see it when you fly above Dubai. Many flights that come into Dubai during the day fly over The World, and if you look carefully, you’ll be able to see the shape of the islands standing out from the sea.

If you are in Dubai for a few days, you can also arrange to take a helicopter or hot air balloon tour over Dubai. During this tour, you’ll see an aerial view of The World.

However, if you want a more hands-on experience of The World, then you should plan to visit Lebanon Island.

Visiting Lebanon Island

When planning a trip to Lebanon island, there’s a lot you need to consider, including how you’ll get there and what you can do once you arrive.

Getting there

To get to Lebanon Island, you first need to fly into Dubai. Depending where you are in America, the flight can take between 10-15 hours.

When visiting the island, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Day passes are free for children under the age of five, and cost between USD25-75 for children over five and adults, depending on the season you visit. Be sure to check the pass prices online.
  • The island is about five kilometers off the Dubai coastline.
  • The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Coast Guard requires that all visitors to The World keep their day passes and original passports with them at all times.
  • Lebanon Island is only open from 11:00 AM-6:00 PM for children every day. For adults, it is open until 11:00 PM, so make sure you are at the harbor for the last ferry.
  • You are not allowed to bring outside food and drinks with you to Lebanon Island, but there is a restaurant on the island where you can have a meal.
  • Boats to the island may be canceled if there is bad weather.

You can choose to visit Lebanon Island privately or join a tour group that will take you to the island. Here are some popular tours you can consider.

Dubai World Islands Lebanon Island Tour

The Dubai Travel & Tourism group runs a five-hour tour to Lebanon Island. The tour includes:

  • Hotel pickups from Dubai
  • A boat transfer to Lebanon island
  • Soft drinks and juice
  • Reserved sunbeds
  • Unlimited access to the pools on the island

You can learn more about the tour here .

Living Kool Lebanon Island Tour

Living Kool is another tour company that runs a five-hour tour to Lebanon Island. This tour’s highlight is that, along with a visit to the island, it includes an hour of kayaking. Other inclusions are:

  • A boat transfer to Lebanon Island and back to Dubai
  • Access to the pools on the island
  • Access to the restaurants and bars on the island.

This tour doesn’t offer pickups from your hotel, so you’ll have to find your own way to Jumeriah Fishing Harbour.

You can learn more about the tour here.

Klook Private Tour

The Klook tour company runs a private tour that will take you to Lebanon Island and allows you six hours to explore the island. The tour includes:

  • A hotel pick up and drop off
  • A private boat transfer to the island and back
  • Access to the pools, bars, and restaurants

You can learn more about the Klook Private Tour here.

If you choose to pre-book a tour to Lebanon Island, be sure to check the tour’s policies. Some tour companies will not refund you if the tours are canceled due to bad weather.

What can you do at Lebanon Island?

You don’t necessarily need to go with a tour company to enjoy Lebanon Island. After you buy your pass and arrive on the island, there are plenty of things to do!

The island is fairly small, and you will be able to walk across it in about an hour. This will allow you to take advantage of all the facilities available.

Lebanon Island has two main beaches; one in the South of the island and one in the North. They are clean and warm and filled with sunbeds for you to relax and soak up the sun.

The southern beach is more popular as it has a stunning view of the Dubai skyline. If you’re looking for privacy, head to the North Beach, which is equally beautiful and has a view of an endless expanse of the sea.

There are shower facilities near the beach available. There are also six small huts lining each beach that you can rent. These huts are air-conditioned and have private toilets and couches, just in case you need a respite from the heat.

The pool sits at the center of Lebanon island and is fairly large. After enjoying a swim, relax on the sunbeds that surround the pool or head to one of the nearby bars.

Lebanon Island has two bars that are on either side of the pool. The bars have a carefully curated wine menu featuring exquisite wines from all over the world. The bartenders are also know how to design delicious and potent craft cocktails.

The Restaurant

Lebanon island is home to Toro Blanco, a Mediterranean and seafood restaurant.

Its menu includes healthy salads made with fresh ingredients, gourmet burgers, sandwiches, and sharing platters. Some of the must-try dishes are the seafood platter and the mixed grill platter.

At night, Toro Blanco transforms into a lounge with indoor and outdoor seating, live music, and shisha with a range of different flavors. You can also ask for a private dining area to be set up near the beach, which is perfect for a romantic dinner.

The restaurant also has a popular BBQ beach brunch every Friday.

Other Activities

Lebanon island has a range of other activities that are free for all visitors. These include beach volleyball, table soccer, billiards, and a kids’ play area. You can also hire water sports equipment like kayaks, jet skis, parasails, banana boats, and stand up paddles.

If you want to see the other World Islands, you can also hire a boat from Lebanon island. The boat will take you around some of the other islands so you can see their development.

Lebanon Island’s Future

Lebanon island has a wide range of activities that are sure to help you relax and unwind. But, you should note that the island may not always be open to the public. In 2018, the current owner of Lebanon Island put it on sale for a cool $27.2m.

While there have been no concrete offers yet, the media reports that the current owners are working on several deals. Some of these are reportedly from Sheikhs and celebrities, many of whom would want to make the island a private space.

So, if you do want to visit Lebanon Island, you should plan a trip soon – before it’s too late!

Where can you stay around Lebanon Island?

If you can’t get enough of Lebanon island, try to stay near the Jumeriah Harbour, so it’s easier to visit it. While there are no hotels on the island, there are several hotels near the Harbour that you can put up at.

About the World Islands

Before making plans to visit The World, it’s worthwhile learning a little about the background of The World, so you know what to expect.

The History of The World

The world is an ambitious project which began in 2003 when it was commissioned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is the ruler of Dubai. He envisioned it as 300 artificially built islands that would be built in the shape of the world map. The islands are arranged into seven sets to represent the seven different continents in the world.

The work to build the islands began in 2003 but has been a slow process because of financial constraints. In 2012, Lebanon island was opened for public use, and there’s now a restaurant, pools, and bars on the island for visitors to use.

Now, the Kleindienst Group is developing the ‘Heart of Europe,’ a collection of islands themed around Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Ukraine, Switzerland, and Morocco, as a luxury resort. It will be open in late 2020.

Celebrities and The World

In the last few years, several celebrities have reportedly purchased land in The World. For instance, actress Hilary Swank bought land in Aquitania, which is a development in the France and Spain islands.

Michael Schumacher, the famous Formula One driver, is rumored to have bought an island in The World. Similarly, singer Madonna also bought land in The World that includes a villa and a private beach.

Of course, as these pieces of land have been purchased, they are now private and inaccessible to the general public.

Conclusion

While many of the World Islands in Dubai are not complete or not accessible to the public, you can fly over them, or take a boat ride past them. The only island in The World that you can visit is Lebanon Island. You should try to visit it soon!

Lebanon Island is a short ride from Jumeriah Harbour and has fun facilities, including a pool, a restaurant, two bars, and sports facilities. It also has two pristine beaches with beautiful views!

To make it easier to visit Lebanon Island, you can stay near the Jumeriah fishing harbor. There are several hotels in every area which can cater to any budget.

If you visit Dubai, you should definitely try to put a visit to Lebanon Island on your itinerary!

Hot Oceans Worsened Dubai’s Dramatic Flooding, Scientists Say

An international team of researchers found that heavy rains had intensified in the region, though they couldn’t say for sure how much climate change was responsible.

Trucks under water with a bridge in the background.

By Raymond Zhong

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions stunned the world this month. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a total surprise — forecasters had anticipated the storms several days earlier and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual.

Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers. These rains often come during El Niño conditions like the ones the world is experiencing now.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on April 16 was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . And parts of the nation had already experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms in March.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every part of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

Hot oceans are a big factor.

An international team of scientists has made a first attempt at estimating the extent to which climate change may have contributed to April’s storms. The researchers didn’t manage to pin down the connection precisely, though in their analysis, they did highlight one known driver of heavy rain in the region: above-normal ocean temperatures.

Large parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans have been hotter than usual recently, in part because of El Niño and other natural weather cycles, and in part because of human-induced warming .

When looking only at El Niño years, the scientists estimated that storm events as infrequent as this month’s delivered 10 percent to 40 percent more rain to the region than they would in a world that hadn’t been warmed by human activities. They cautioned, however, that these estimates were highly uncertain.

“Rainfall, in general, is getting more extreme,” said Mansour Almazroui, a climate scientist at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and one of the researchers who contributed to the analysis.

The analysis was conducted by scientists affiliated with World Weather Attribution, a research collaboration that studies extreme weather events shortly after they occur. Their findings about this month’s rains haven’t yet been peer reviewed, but are based on standardized methods .

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried around the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this month’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half-century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.

Nearly 50 years later, Asian American and Pacific Islander month features revelry and racial justice

It has been almost 50 years since the U.S. government established that Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders and their accomplishments should be recognized annually across the nation.

What started as just one week in May has evolved over the decades into a monthlong tribute of events in cities big and small. The nature of celebrations also evolved. Asian American and Pacific Islander or Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is not just about showcasing festive fare like food and fashion, but hard subjects like grief and social justice. The rise of anti-Asian hate during the pandemic only heightened that effort.

“I think the visibility and the level that the increased participation of organizations in Asian Pacific Heritage Month activities is also an indication of the increasing voice of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in civic life more generally,” said Karen Umemoto, director of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center. “And also an indication of the spaces that we’ve come to collectively enter to be able to create those.”

Indeed, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebrations are not relegated just to ethnic enclaves or culturally-specific venues. Across the U.S. this year, events are planned at public libraries, parks and museums either highlighting a specific Asian culture or a myriad of them.

FILE - President Joe Biden speaks April 24, 2024, in Washington. Biden called Japan and India "xenophobic" countries that do not welcome immigrants, lumping the two with adversaries China and Russia as he tried to explain the four countries' economic circumstances and contrasted them with the U.S. on immigration at a campaign fundraiser Wednesday evening at the start of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Wednesday, May 1, 2024. HOW DID AAPI HERITAGE MONTH START?

Many credit the observance’s origin to Jeanie Jew, a co-founder of the congressional Asian-Pacific staff caucus. In 1977, the Chinese American shared a moving story with New York Republican Rep. Frank Horton about how her grandfather had helped build the transcontinental railroad in the 1800s and then was killed amid anti-Asian unrest.

Jew believed Asians should appreciate their heritage and “Americans must know about the contributions and histories of the Asian-Pacific American experience,” Horton said in 1992, according to congressional archives . At that time, Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month had already been instituted. Yet, Asian Americans were described as the fastest growing racial group.

Horton and California Democratic Rep. Norm Mineta proposed President Jimmy Carter issue a proclamation that the first week of May be “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week.” Hawaii Senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga, both Democrats, brought up a similar bill in the Senate.

WHY IS IT IN MAY?

May was chosen because of two significant events. The first Japanese immigrants to the U.S. arrived on May 7, 1843. Then on May 19, 1869, the final spike for the transcontinental railroad track, in which Chinese laborers played a crucial role, was embedded.

Umemoto recalls hearing talk of Asian Pacific Heritage Week as a college student. But it wasn’t something that was mainstream.

“I think it was more of a kind of cultural celebration in the early days,” she said. “And so a lot of student groups, I remember as doing programming around the different histories, cultural traditions and issues in the community.”

In May 1990, President George H.W. Bush expanded the designation to the entire month. In 2009, President Barack Obama changed the name to Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Now, President Joe Biden’s administration refers to it as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

“As artists and journalists, doctors and engineers, business and community leaders, and so much more, AA and NHPI peoples have shaped the very fabric of our Nation and opened up new possibilities for all of us,” Biden said in an official Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month proclamation issued on Tuesday.

The White House will hold a celebration in Washington on May 13 to commemorate 25 years since the inception of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.

HOW HAS IT GROWN IN SIGNIFICANCE?

Asian American and Pacific Islander advocacy groups have long used the month as a platform to bring resources to underserved communities and educate the public. But, the one-two punch of COVID-19 and assaults on Asian people in the U.S. really gave some a new appreciation for the heritage month’s purpose.

Pre-pandemic, Amber Reed, of Montclair, New Jersey, didn’t really think about Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. A Korean-American adoptee who grew up one of few Asian children in rural Michigan, she said she didn’t feel a strong connection to her Asian ancestry. That changed after the March 2021 Atlanta spa shootings that left eight dead, including six Asian women.

“Certainly it jolted me out of thinking that my family could be safe and that we could just sort of muddle through without sort of reckoning with some of the very vicious currents of racism in our culture,” Reed said. “And I take no pride in having needed that moment to wake me up.”

In response to the shootings, Reed and around 50 others started the nonprofit AAPI New Jersey — originally AAPI Montclair. Their advocacy began with surveys of local schools and other institutions’ recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

The group then quickly organized the Lantern Festival for Justice and Remembrance for May. The Chinese tradition of lighting lanterns became a vehicle to honor victims of hate or injustice, Reed said. The event is now in its fourth year.

“I think one thing Asian cultures do so well is provide these rituals, including for collective grief,” said Reed, who still finds it surreal that the group continues to grow.

WHAT EVENTS MARK THE MONTH?

The variety of subjects and cultures feted during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month has flourished. There are events happening this month that include more narrow topics, such as a panel on the Asian American Church in Pasadena, California. There’s an Asian Comedy Fest in New York City. And in Wisconsin, the state will celebrate May 14 as Hmong-Lao Veterans Day, which was signed into law in 2021. Thousands of Hmong-Lao soldiers fought alongside U.S. forces during the Vietnam war. Many Hmong and Laotian families resettled in Wisconsin.

These heritage month celebrations are helping to erode the notion that the whole population is a monolith, Umemoto said.

“I think it’s important for people to visibly see from a wide range of groups that fall under the category Asian American and Pacific Islanders. There are over 70 different ethnic and national groups and over 100 languages spoken within those communities,” Umemoto said. “And they’re very different.”
