Kanye West Hitting The Road With Kendrick Lamar For 'Yeezus' Tour

yeezus tour

Kanye West is ready to take his show on the road. On Friday (September 6) 'Ye created quite the stir when he tweeted a promotion pic for his upcoming Yeezus Tour.

It's his first solo run since 2008's Glow in the Dark Tour. (On his last tour Yeezy shared the bill with Jay Z to promote their 2011 album Watch the Throne. ) The seven-week, 23-city North American run will also feature Kendrick Lamar . It all starts on October 19 at the KeyArena in Seattle, Washington and end on December 7 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Tickets will go on sale September 13.

West made waves earlier this year when he dropped his now gold-selling Yeezus album. The 10-track LP disregarded tradition as Kanye embarked on a mission with new sounds and new rules, even before Jay Z made it a hashtag. There was no lead-up single, and West premiered the clip for "New Slaves" on the sides of buildings in various cities across the country.

There was no album art, and the physical CD simply came in a clear jewel casing; then of course there were the sonic components. Yeezus, with all of its buzzing bass and electro bleeps and blips made it stand out from every album in Kanye's catalog -- or for that matter, any hip-hop album ever recorded. The innovation was intriguing to Kendrick, who dropped his critically acclaimed debut good kid, m.A.A.d city late last year.

"It was hard for me to grasp it on the first take," K-Dot [article id="1709638"]told MTV News[/article] in June, just a few days after Yeezus was released. "I got it, but as I kept listening throughout the week, I understood where he was going and that was him stepping out of the box again and doing what he felt.

"And as an artist, we all need to take heat into that and salute that because, at the end of the day, it's so much we can do following radio, following the politics in the business so for somebody to come back again and do what they want, it helps out new cats like myself, Cole, Drake, whoever, so salute."

Kanye West Brings on Jesus for ‘Yeezus’ Tour Kickoff

By Corbin Reiff

Corbin Reiff

Kanye West kicked off his highly anticipated Yeezus tour at Seattle’s Key Arena on Saturday night with a two-hour-plus show that was as emotionally unsettling as it was awe-inspiring. Kendrick Lamar , the tour’s support act, got things started with a frantic 45-minute set made up almost exclusively of cuts from his critically acclaimed good kid, m.A.A.d city album. Lamar has been criticized for being something of a lackluster live performer but he generally managed to put any such concerns to rest from the get-go and delivered a truly inspired performance. By the time the last notes of “Compton” had faded from the venue’s speakers, the crowd was on their feet chanting his name for more.

That was not to be, of course, because it was West’s turn to show Seattle what he could do. Clad in a green tank top and wearing the first of four different masks he would don throughout the evening, West set the scene by taking a place at the front of the stage’s extended catwalk, his arms outstretched, bathed in a single white spotlight and surrounded by a gaggle of women cloaked in white dresses, their faces obscured by stockings. The audience responded to the display with an explosion of jubilation, and with the first strands of Yeezus ‘ opening track, “On Sight,” West was off to the races.

Find Out Why Kanye West Made Rolling Stone’s List of the New Immortals

West’s energy level was extraordinary from the very beginning, with his manic gyrations causing the front end of the stage to rock violently up and down like a giant diving board. The opening number was followed in short order by another two songs off Yeezus , “New Slaves” and “Send It Up.” As the night progressed, West managed to play every song off the new record in addition to a variety of selections from his extensive back catalog, including a sparse rendition of “Stronger,” and truly electrifying performances of “Power,” “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and “Runaway.” While he did play a few songs from his earliest records, including “Jesus Walks” off The College Dropout , most of the non- Yeezus material seemed to derive from either Graduation , 808s & Heartbreak or My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy .

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

The stage as imagined and executed by West was truly something to behold. It featured a sixty-foot tall white mountain as a centerpiece with a gigantic circular projection screen hanging above. But while West’s last solo outing, his Glow in the Dark tour, was a case study in sensory overload, the Yeezus tour is most notable for its starkness and absence of color. Yes, there were the mandatory laser lights, and as always West’s outfits are a surefire attention grabber, but the real grandeur, the real spectacle, lay more with the vast array of unsettling imagery offered by the various stage performers and by West himself.

O.J. Simpson Executor Clarifies Stance on Goldmans Receiving Money From Estate

Supreme court justices compare bribes to taking a teacher to cheesecake factory, trump and his team are already lying about what happened in court, trump forced to see mean memes about him shared by prospective jurors.

The previously mentioned group of women clad in white made intermittent reappearances onstage, most of the time wearing sheer body suits that left nothing to the imagination. At one point, the stage mountain cracked open and they poured out two-by-two in a cloud of thick white smoke carrying various religious iconography – the Virgin Mary, a swinging thurible spewing incense, and a crucifix – with West belting out the song “I Wonder” behind them.

The capper ultimately was the guest appearance by none other than Jesus Christ himself, for whom West finally removed his mask to proclaim that he had been looking for him. Jesus naturally responded that he had been there all along. Later, the mock Christ would ascend to the top of the mountain as West bowed in supplication before him while the haunting refrain from “On Sight” – “You give us what we need/it may not be what we want” – played repeatedly in the background.

Kanye West THE YEEZUS TOUR with Kendrick Lamar

yeezus tour

The November 7 and 9 Kanye West shows at the United Center have been postponed. The shows have been rescheduled to occur on December 17 and 18.

Fans should hold onto their tickets, as tickets for the November 7 show will be honored on December 17, and tickets for the November 9 show will be honored on December 18.

Refunds are available within the next 7 days at the original point of purchase.

THE YEEZUS TOUR is Kanye West's first major itinerary since his WATCH THE THRONE tour with JAY Z in 2011 - the highest grossing tour in hip-hop history - and his first solo tour since 2008's critically acclaimed GLOW IN THE DARK tour. Recently, the Washington Post hailed West as "a visionary who's managed to tweak the serial rhythms that dictate so much of our pop culture diet. He doesn't do cliffhangers. He jumps off...We gasp, gawk and wonder, 'Where will he land?'"

West's recent effort YEEZUS has been hailed by critics as the album of the year; The New York Times raved "the album is one long, efficient, inventive kick in the head," while the Daily News agreed that YEEZUS was "punk in attitude, genius in execution." Rolling Stone argued the album was "a brilliant, obsessive-compulsive career auto-correct...This isn't just a way to stay ahead of the competition; it's a way to stay ahead of himself." The New Yorker echoed the sentiment, proclaiming YEEZUS as "technically breathtaking...Twenty years from now, West's previous records will remain important, but a new generation may first gravitate to the lean vibrancy of this one." USA Today weighed in with "...a polarizing, multi-layered body of work that probably will be debated all summer. Who does that besides Kanye West?" Entertainment Weekly summed things up with "Kanye West has gone rogue again. Did you expect anything less? The job of an innovator, of course, is to keep innovating...he pushes the envelope aesthetically."

Kanye again pushed the envelope at the 30th anniversary 2013 MTV VMAs, with his visually stunning, silhouetted performance of "Blood On The Leaves," from YEEZUS.  The performance made VMA history, marking Kanye's seventh showcase at the awards spectacular, tying him with Madonna as the two artists with the most number of VMA performances.  Kanye West has delivered some of the most visually stunning and memorable - and controversial - performances in the annals of the MTV VMAs.

West now readies his powerful, innovative live performance for his first major solo tour in 5 years.

How Kanye West Changed the Message of His Yeezus Tour in Dallas

A foreboding, shadowy and sinister figure lurks at the edge of an enormous white mountain top. Buzzing synths permeate the arena, and the masked man of the hour saunters below. "Hold My Liquor," one of the standout tracks of Kanye West's most recent album, stirs over the ravenous crowd. He performs the song from the stage's point, trying to no avail to escape the gaze of the demon lurking behind him. It's chilling, an unsettling illustration of man's constant struggle between good and evil.

It is not overdone. As grandiose and theatrical as the Yeezus tour is, at its core it's starkly minimalistic, confrontational, evocative. It's a glimpse into the inner workings of the mind of a misunderstood man. And though it's off-putting that he says it every 15 minutes, you can't deny the man's a genius, especially not after seeing this show.

See also: Live from the Yeezus screenings earlier this year

Kanye West admitted last week at the Kansas City stop of his Yeezus tour, which only sold 4,500 to an arena built to accommodate 19,000, that he's prone to saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. That's a big crime when your every word echoes across the vast expanse of the global media machine. His big mouth and bigger megaphone help make Kanye the most divisive figure in contemporary pop culture. That's not changing - he may care less about having a congenial public persona than any pop star in history.

What you might not expect is that the surprising message ringing out during his packed Dallas tour stop Friday was that he wants the people listening to his music to champion themselves as much as he champions himself. He didn't deliver a self-serving rant about the state of his current shoe deal or his difficulty breaking into high fashion. It was here, in North Texas, that he decided it was time to take a different approach.

Arriving early was definitely the move, but many did not. It's clear to see that Dallasites are ill-equipped to handle mildly icy conditions. Though a crowd of at least 50 swarmed American Airlines Center's front doors in the minutes before they opened, the venue didn't really fill out until well into West's first few songs. Opener Kendrick Lamar, however, had plenty crowd (at least ⅔ of the arena's capacity) to work with during his opening set.

In his last three stops into town, we've watched Lamar go from mid-size music hall to large amphitheater and now to an arena stage. This kind of progression in about year's time is fair to classify as a meteoric rise. Dallas rap fans will remember this most recent performance as the night we watched Kendrick Lamar become a Grammy-award nominee right before our very eyes. The announcement of Lamar's seven 2013 nods including Best New Artist and Best Rap Album ( Yeezus was also recognized for the latter) would go public about halfway through his opening set this Friday.

For the first time, we had the pleasure of watching Lamar with the accompaniment of a full live band, and it was definitely worth the wait. This is the way that these records were meant to be heard live. "m.A.A.D. city" absolutely shreds as a guitar riff, delivering extra goosebumps to the overall dark and sinister spirit of the record.

Lamar's video package backdrop looped dreamy, slow motion Compton city-scapes like colorfully adorned pronails spread over concrete slabs. There was the California sun kissing arms slouched out of open Cadillac windows, and blunt smoke wafting from dandelion-addled porch stoops. From his commanding performance, it's clear to see why the entire genre of rap music is currently living in the shadow of Lamar's debut album, just over a year after its release. Hopefully you've taken advantage of his multiple stops through Texas since then, because it's his progression has been a very special thing to witness so closely.

After a short time, the man of the hour took the stage. A dozen white robe-clad female dancers ominously sauntered out, stoic and single file, onto the stage's catwalk, which connected Yeezus ' gigantic white holy mountain to the hydraulic, triangular, iceberg-like front staging area. The tour's dynamic set design is the work of the incredibly innovative mind of DONDA's Es Devlin, who served the same role on West and Jay-Z's Watch The Throne tour.

As the dancers waited for Kanye at the front of the stage, an operatic and Wagner-esque choir filled the arena. Then silence. A woman's voice rang out, reading along from black and white text flashed over the 60 foot circular projection.

FIGHTING Noun: violence or conflict Adjective: displaying combat or aggression pugnacious, truculent, belligerent, bellicose "Light beamed into the world, but men and women ran toward the darkness."

After the quote from The Gospel of John came silence. A snippet of West's to-be-released record, "I'm Not Here" rang out (it has been teased in the intro sequence throughout this tour).

I am not here right now, I am not home Leave a message after the life, after I'm gone

These were the first of many references to Christianity and the afterlife we saw before the end of the night. The bumpers returned, splitting the show into four acts: Fighting, Rising, Searching and Falling. Each segment was introduced over the booming arena speakers, with similar biblical passage cited.

And after the intro, he was risen. West walked up the catwalk to the opening synths of Yeezus' introduction track, "On Sight," weaved through the dancers standing in a grid to the front spotlight. He wore an American flag print tank top, with an eagle emblazoned on the front, and the crowd roared as he rapped his first verse. When the first refrain came, the crowd erupted in applause. The track's sample, a Holy Name of Mary Choral vocal rang out.

Oh he'll give us what we need It might not be what we want

Throughout his set, West revisited older material. During "Can't Tell Me Nothing," the front stage rose over the crowd, resembling a towering cliff. At that cliff's peak, he curled into the fetal position and spoke of his beloved late mother before dedicating "Coldest Winter" to her as prop snow fell from the sky. During "Heartless," he perched on the mountain's edge as a black Lady Godiva stalked the catwalk below. Before "Jesus Walks," "white Jesus" himself appeared, blessing a kneeling West, and allowing him to finally remove one of many embellished Margiela face masks he wore throughout the night.

During "Lost In The World", which left the audience reeling and exhilarated, the robed dancers emerged from the split mountain and recreated a Catholic mass processional onstage, while projections of fire and brimstone turned the enormous white rock into a fiery volcano. The processional presented the pulpit, an MPC for West to perform "Runaway" on. After that, came what everyone had been anticipating, the rant.

On past stops, West has used his signature sing-preaching act break to wax poetic on the woes of superstardom. Jilted tales of media malignment, design collaboration deals, and his own genius are a hard sell to the working class Americans who buy his records. This Friday however, West unexpectedly advised the audience, "I changed my approach, ladies and gentlemen... Because you only get back what you put out into the universe so, it's only positive energy. That's all I want back is positive energy."

"What I'm dealing with is very, very, extremely complex. It's a tightrope that I'm walking right now. They try to control me with this concept of likability... If I get in so much trouble for telling the truth, then the rest of the time, what are they telling you?" asked West, starting in with the kind of self-aggrandizing we've come to expect, "I ain't humble at all, I'm ten feet tall. I ain't humble at all, I'm 100 feet tall. I ain't humble at all, I'm 1000 feet tall... You can still be polite, I'm polite, but I'm not humble at all." But then, the tone of the monologue seemed to shift.

"How many times have people told you what you could do and what you couldn't do? Trying to step on your dreams and shit," he said to the crowd, with us now. "Your coworker, somebody you go to school with, a relative that ain't never made shit out of theyself? Trying to step on your dreams and shit. If you believe you can do anything, put your hands in the sky right now. Say I'm 1000 feet tall. So we won't listen to them no more.

"There are two types of people in this world, ladies and gentlemen. See there's dreamers, and there's haters. They're only separated by one thing: Haters forgot about their dreams. Haters let people kill their dreams. Right now, I guess I'm just dreaming out loud."

That's a point often lost in the inflammatory sound bytes that plague his media coverage. On this night, however, the stars aligned and the empowering message took center stage. The crowd cheered for it, pleasantly surprised and uplifted.

The American dream has never been about following the rules or doing what you're told. It's never been about keeping the rich wealthy and the poor destitute. It's making something out nothing, and there's no formula for that. Paving your own path is the only true way to greatness, and it's no easy feat. It has proven to be even harder to accomplish without a few people thinking you're fucking crazy.

West wrapped up his soapbox with a bow when he asked everyone in the audience to throw their peace signs up in memory of Nelson Mandela.

After closing out the night with "Bound 2," West's robed processional returned for the finale. In the definitive act of humbleness, he and his dancers dropped to their knees before white Jesus at the top of the mountain. Looped over the PA, the Holy Name of Mary Choir rang out, reminding us that while West may not have turned out to be exactly the underdog story we'd all aspired for him in the beginning, he's still dedicated to using his voice and his creative works to inspire the masses. If you can't separate Kanye West the man (or the monster, as he and the mainstream media often portray him), from Kanye West the artist, you just don't get it, and that's on you.

Kanye West Yeezus tour ticket stub

Kanye West kicked off his Yeezus tour Saturday from Seattle’s KeyArena. It was a visual spectacle powered by his creative house DONDA . In true Kanye style, the show went where no show has gone before, transforming the venue into a sort of Kanye West cathedral complete with dancing apostles, a mini Mount Sinai, several face mask changes and a 27-song setlist.

West, whose last solo tour — the Glow in The Dark tour — involved rising platforms and out-of-this-world visuals , has appeared to have outdone himself again. You be the judge, though. Check out 25 fan photos from last night’s Yeezus kickoff in Seattle in the gallery ahead.

Review: Kanye West's 'Yeezus' tour at the Wells Fargo Center

Kanye West stood on the Wells Fargo Center stage Saturday night with his face covered by a stylish executioner's mask that made him look like a high couture Mexican wrestler, and attempted to explain himself. In so doing about two-thirds of the way through his grueling, boldly unorthodox 2 hour and 20 minute 'Yeezus' tour, the proudly provocative rapper, producer and fast food eater - he had dinner at Wendy's on 15th and Chestnut with fiancee Kim Kardashian on Friday - talked about "the Willie Lynch theory" of keeping African Americans in order by punishing them in public.   "They beat that slave till he behave," West said during an improvised interlude in "Runaway," from his 2010 maximalist masterwork My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. "But I don't want to behave. I just want to be me." By any measure, he succeeds in that endeavor. Just as Yeezus , the album, ignored commercial considerations  by valuing noise over rhythm or melody, the Yeezus tour largely put aside crowd pleasing conventions in order to pursue its auteur's peculiar vision. Love him or hate him, Kanye is relentlessly committed to being true to Kanye.     Opening up with a barrage of confrontational Yeezus assaults - "On Sight," "New Slaves," "Send It Up" - West came out swinging in the first date of the tour since several shows were canceled or postponed after the stage set was damaged in a truck accident. Dressed like a Roman gladiator, he wore a bejeweled mask that was the first of four head coverings he would don throughout the evening.  He was frequently joined by up to a dozen women dressed in nude body suits or flowing robes, flanking him in eerie processionals on the arrowhead shaped stage which extended onto the floor of the not sold-out house. He had other companions - a red eyed Yeti for one song, and for "Jesus Walks," an actor dressed as the son of God for a Yeezus-meets-Jesus moment which finally enticed West to pull off his balaclava and meet his audience's gaze. And besides the rapper himself, the other big star in the room was a faux Himalayan peak that reached to the Wells Fargo rafters, brazenly begging comparison to Spinal Tap's Stonehenge. The concert-cum-performance art piece was organized into five sections: Fighting, Rising, Falling, Searching and Finding, as our hero sought meaning in a mythological landscape, rife with Biblical symbolism. Those with the patience of Job - in my section, several people walked out before the finish - would watch as his faith was eventually restored: The concert ended with West and companions kneeling on stage, gazing upwards at Jesus, bathed in light atop Mount Kanye. But before he could find that redemption, West would have to sink to the lower depths. That was represented by the severe "Coldest Winter," which he revealed was written about the death of his mother Donda in 2007. Along with "Heartless," it was one of two songs that West sang  (rather than rapped) from 2008's 808s & Heartbreak that proved to be at the Yeezus's show emotional core.      All of this grandiose spectacle was fascinating to watch, but a struggle to endure.  A few older hits like self-aggrandizing "Power" and self-critiquing "Can't Tell Me Nothing" came early in the show, but mostly West made his people wait for gratification, backloading the set with inviting tunes such as "All Of The Lights" and "Bound 2" (the most atypically inviting Yeezus track.)  With one punishing set piece after another, the show had little momentum and felt much longer than its running time,  seemingly taking forever to get to the fun parts. Los Angeles rapper Kendrick Lamar warmed up for West, rewarding fans who showed up early with hard hitting set drawn largely from 2012 good kid, M.A.A.D. City, one of the strongest rap albums in memory. Lamar spat rhymes over crushing beats played by a too loud band that sometimes obscured the intricacy of his flow, and also offered gentler grooves on "Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst," in which he compellingly portrayed the path from the streets of Compton to rap stardom as a life or death struggle.

Kanye West's 'Yeezus' Tour To Resume

Kanye West fans rejoice. The artist will resume his ‘Yeezus’ tour on November 16.

Kanye West postponed the rest of the tour after a 60-foot LED screen used during his shows was damaged in a truck accident that occurred on Wednesday (Oct. 30).

He has rescheduled the dates for Chicago, Toronto and Detroit, but due to “routing logistics” the shows in Vancouver, Denver, Columbus, Montreal, Minneapolis and St. Louis have been cancelled, according to Island Def Jam.

The record label released a statement last week detailing the accident, saying that the truck was on its way to Vancouver when the gear was wrecked beyond repair. “This gear is central to the staging of The Yeezus Tour, and central to the creative vision put forth by Kanye West and his design team at DONDA,” the statement reads. “Kanye West will not compromise on bringing the show, as it was originally envisioned and designed, to his fans.”

The seven week, 23-city North American tour presented by AEG Live - in support of his gold album Yeezus, the most critically acclaimed new album of 2013 and the sixth consecutive #1 album of his storied career. West – a legendary live performer - combines state-of-the-art staging, production, and lighting design with his unmatched aesthetic, visionary creative mind, and an increasingly impressive catalogue of hits spanning his decade-long career. To date, West has sold over 30 million albums and over 78 million digital tracks worldwide.

Joining West in exclusive support on “The Yeezus Tour” will be Top Dawg Entertainment’s own Kendrick Lamar, who has emerged as one of the-brightest young talents in hip-hop today. Lamar’s debut album good kid, m.A.A.d city, released last October, was recently certified platinum by the RIAA.

“The Yeezus Tour” is West’s first major itinerary since his “Watch The Throne” tour with Jay Z in 2011 - the highest grossing tour in hip-hop history – and his first solo tour since 2008’s critically acclaimed “Glow In The Dark” tour. Recently, the Washington Post hailed West as “a visionary who’s managed to tweak the serial rhythms that dictate so much of our pop culture diet. He doesn’t do cliffhangers. He jumps off…We gasp, gawk and wonder, ‘Where will he land?’”

West’s recent effort Yeezus has been hailed by critics as the album of the year; The New York Times raved “the album is one long, efficient, inventive kick in the head,” while the Daily News agreed that YEEZUS was “punk in attitude, genius in execution.” Rolling Stone argued the album was “a brilliant, obsessive-compulsive career auto-correct…This isn’t just a way to stay ahead of the competition; it’s a way to stay ahead of himself.” The New Yorker echoed the sentiment, proclaiming YEEZUS as “technically breathtaking…Twenty years from now, West’s previous records will remain important, but a new generation may first gravitate to the lean vibrancy of this one.” USA Today weighed in with “…a polarizing, multi-layered body of work that probably will be debated all summer. Who does that besides Kanye West?” Entertainment Weekly summed things up with “Kanye West has gone rogue again. Did you expect anything less? The job of an innovator, of course, is to keep innovating… …he pushes the envelope aesthetically.”

West again pushed the envelope at the 30th anniversary 2013 MTV VMAs, with his visually stunning, silhouetted performance of “Blood On The Leaves,” from Yeezus. The performance made VMA history, marking West’s seventh showcase at the awards spectacular, tying him with Madonna as the two artists with the most number of VMA performances. West has delivered some of the most visually stunning and memorable - and controversial - performances in the annals of the MTV VMAs.

West now readies his powerful, innovative live performance for his first major solo tour in five years.

INTERIORS: The Yeezus Tour

Interiors is an online film and architecture journal, published by Mehruss Jon Ahi and Armen Karaoghlanian . Interiors runs an exclusive column for ArchDaily that analyzes and diagrams films in terms of space. Their Official Store will carry exclusive prints from these posts.

The Yeezus Tour, Kanye West ’s solo tour, which coincides with his sixth studio album, Yeezus , kicked off in Seattle, Washington on October 19, 2013 and ends in Toronto, Canada on December 23, 2013.

The show is theatrical, cinematic and operatic in its structure. It merges together all of Kanye West ’s interests in the the visual and performance arts, creating a powerful experience that transcends the concert format.

Kanye West is known for collaborating with artists from various mediums, including fashion designers, artists and architects. In 2007, he collaborated with contemporary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, who designed the album artwork for his third studio album, Graduation . In 2008, the special edition vinyl of his fourth studio album, 808s & Heartbreak, was designed by New York artist KAWS. In 2010, contemporary visual artist George Condo designed the album artwork for his fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy . In 2011, fashion designer Riccardo Tisci designed the album artwork for his collaborative album with rapper Jay Z, Watch the Throne .

Kanye West first experimented with architecture and set design in 2008 with his critically acclaimed world tour, The Glow in the Dark Tour. In 2011, he collaborated with Es Devlin, award-winning stage and costume designer, on the stunning visual display and stage design for the Watch the Throne Tour. Kanye West and Es Devlin joined forces again in 2012 for three shows in Atlantic City.

In the summer of 2012, Kanye West launched his own design company, DONDA , which is focused on “content, product and experience.” Virgil Abloh, who currently serves as the creative director of DONDA, has a background in architecture and has been the leader of its design. In May of 2012, DONDA produced a seven-screen pyramid-shaped pavilion at the Festival de Cannes, where his film, Cruel Summer, premiered. The project was designed by the New York branch of OMA , with project architect Oana Stanescu, in collaboration with DONDA and 2x4, Inc. Cruel Summer was filmed with a custom seven-camera rig in Qatar and was designed as a project that would immerse its audience in a cinematic space. In addition to this unique experience, Kanye West has recently been linked to architect David Benjamin, co-founder of the design and research studio, The Living, on a project that reimagines the movie theatre experience.

In his career, Kanye West has referenced architects including Le Corbusier, Antoni Gaudí and Rem Koolhaas – each of whom were accused during their careers for not following the conventional norms of architecture and design. These architects were revolutionary in the ways in which they were able to combine architecture with the fields of industrial design, sculpture and fashion, respectively. In an interview with The New York Times , he stated that the sound of his sixth studio album, Yeezus, was inspired by architecture. “You know, this one Corbusier lamp was like, my greatest inspiration”. Le Corbusier, known for completely rejecting style in favor of minimalistic design, is today respected as one of the founders of modern architecture.

Kanye West’s efforts in film and architecture have been faced with criticism due to his assumed lack of knowledge and experience. There have also been those who have applauded his efforts and have celebrated him for taking these fields in new directions within today’s social consciousness. In the same way he was able to bring the worlds of high fashion into popular culture, he has been able to do the same for architecture and design. Kanye West has stated in many interviews that DONDA ’s ten-year plan includes designing amusement parks, churches and films that go along with the idea of intelligent design and creative experiences for the masses.

Kanye has said that the initial vision for The Yeezus Tour came from imagining the end of the world. The visuals of explosions, fire, mountains, masked beings, creatures and God all make their way into the experience of the show.

Vanessa Beecroft, known for her incredible performance art involving the female body, designed the scenography for the tour. West and Beecroft previously collaborated for an art installation for 808’s & Heartbreak . Vanessa Beecroft was also the art director of Kanye West ’s 35-minute film, Runaway , in 2010.

In addition to the dance and film elements, The Yeezus Tour effectively combines elements of fashion. Fashion house Maison Martin Margiela and Kanye West worked together to curate the fashion pieces and outfits associated with The Yeezus Tour. Kanye West and Margiela went into their archives to obtain the spirit of the iconic fashion house. The wardrobe for The Yeezus Tour is composed of 10 couture pieces, 20 ready-to-wear pieces and an exclusive pair of sneakers, as well as several head-encasing masks. KANYE WEST also wore his Nike Air Yeezy 2 shoes, also known as the “Red Octobers”, that he helped design, for the majority of his tour.Even the stage’s catwalk, which Kanye West uses when he walks his Maison Martin Margiela pieces, resembles that of a fashion show.

The show features 12 female dancers, or “disciples," as many have called them, who play an integral role in the show. They wear skin-tight, see-through outfits made of nylon as well as masks that obscure their faces. They not only provide choreographed routines, but they physically interact with Kanye West during certain songs.

During his performance at the Barclay's Center In Brooklyn, New York, on November 19, 2013, Kanye West expressed that Alejandro Jodorowsky’s film The Holy Mountain (1973) was an important touchstone for the design of the tour. The Holy Mountain is about a Christ-like figure who wanders through bizarre scenarios filled with religious imagery. The man meets a guide, as well as seven influential people, and all nine embark on a journey seeking “The Holy Mountain.” There are various aspects of the show that are influenced from the film, including the stage, which includes a mountain, the choreographed installation of nude women, masks and inclusion of a holy figure. In the opening minutes of the film, a thief’s face is covered in black flies, a visual reference for one of Maison Martin Margiela’s masks, designed for the show.

The influence from The Holy Mountain , however, is more thematic than visual. The film, much like the show, is an experience and asserts its focus on a biblical redemption story; similarly, Kanye West ’s show is focused on a similar journey, one of self-realization and self-discovery, as evidenced through the five chapters of the show: Fighting, Rising, Falling, Searching and Finding. These chapters are used to separate the set list and also as a slight break for wardrobe changes.

The stage design for The Yeezus Tour features a mountain, which many have labeled Mount Yeezus, which is approximately 50-feet high. The mountain is connected to a catwalk, which is about 30-feet long. The catwalk extends from the center of the mountain onto a secondary sage or lower stage, which is approximately 35-feet long and in the shape of a triangle.

There is a circular LED screen, about 60-feet tall, above the mountain that is angled (about 30 degrees), providing fans a closer look of the show, along with two additional circular screens, about 10-15 feet wide, that are placed above the mountain and parallel with the stage. The large LED screen, along with the entire sound system, is held up with custom metalwork. The screen provides information about the chapter breaks, as well as stunning visuals and atmospheric displays of nature for certain songs, such as “Heartless”, “Coldest Winter" and "Blood on the Leaves." There is a camera that is directly above the lower stage, which syncs to the circular screen to provide an overhead view of the choreography during certain songs.

The mountain and lower stage also include areas for small pyrotechnics and fire displays during some songs, such as “Blood on the Leaves” and “All of the Lights.” The explosions take palce along the ramps in the front of the mountain. In some instances, images are projected onto the mountain from above as a way of changing its texture. In one particular instance, the mountain changes its appearance into a volcano. “Blood on the Leaves” transforms the stage into a pyrotechnic show. The fire bursts come from the mountain and explosions erupt from the lower stage. The mountain also splits in half in the middle of the show to allow a religious procession through and Jesus, himself.

The lower stage is capable of bouncing up and down as it’s being jumped on. In addition, this lower stage was lifted above the ground (about 30 degrees) during “Can’t Tell Me Nothing" and "Coldest Winter". The stage also houses a Microsoft Xbox Kinect sensor on the south corner. This sensor is used during the performance of “Black Skinhead,” as motion capture is used on the screen behind him. In addition, spotlights directly above him and strategically placed around the arena direct more light onto him. In addition, his mirrored mask for “Stronger,” complement the unique light effects because of the spotlight above him.

The majority of the show is performed on the lower stage. The fact that the stage can be bounced up and down and lifted adds a new dimension to the performance because the entire arena feels engaged. Kanye West further connected to the audience during “Runaway,” one of his most heartfelt performances.

Kanye West performs only one song from behind the mountain (“Power”) on an electronic lift that carries him up. Jesus also stands there at the end of the show before Kanye West walks off stage.

The Yeezus Tour was postponed for 18 days when one of the trucks holding part of the 60-foot LED screen was in a car wreck. The LED screen and metalwork were damaged beyond repair. The equipment had to be reconstructed in a short amount of time; as a result, several shows were postponed or completely cancelled because of routing logistics. The show, however, carried on and retained its artistic sensibilities, despite its challenges.

Interiors attended two shows of The Yeezus Tour , his second show (San Jose, California) on October 22, and his 24 th show (Anaheim, California) on December 13, 2013. The set list and visual displays changed slightly, but the main framework stayed consistent.

The three main parts of the stage (mountain, catwalk, and lower stage) were all used during the concert and all were given the same amount of attention and focus. The drawings and graphical data were done by analyzing photographs and tour information, as well as using Kanye West ’s height of 5’8” as a scale factor.

The diagrams we designed for The Yeezus Tour emphasize specific moments of Kanye performing various songs. The mountain elevation diagram depicts his performance of “Power.” The lower stage elevation diagram depicts his performance of “I Am a God.” The full stage diagram depicts his performance of “Bound 2.” These specific moments and songs are significant to the show itself. The Yeezus Tour will be remembered for its seamless balancing of all elements of the arts, while Kanye West himself will be known as the architect of this creative endeavor.

These diagrams, along with others, are available for purchase in our Official Store .
