MARINDUQUE TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

MARINDUQUE TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

During my time in Marinduque earlier this month, not only did I feel the warmth of the Marinduquenõs but also their love for their province. I’m blown away by how earnest they are in promoting their beloved heart-shaped island, which, coincidentally, is also considered the geographical center of the Philippines according to the Luzon Datum of 1911.

Marinduque is indeed living up to its moniker — the Heart of the Philippines.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING MARINDUQUE

The island province of Marinduque lies between Tayabas Bay (north) and Sibuyan Sea (south). It is located north of Romblon, east of Mindoro (separated by the Tablas Strait), and west of Quezon (separated by the Mongpong Pass). Marinduque comprises six municipalities: Boac (the provincial capital), Mogpog, Gasan, Buenavista, Torrijos, and Santa Cruz. Other than these towns, it also has offshore islands that include Tres Reyes Islands (Melchor, Gaspar, Baltazar), Elephant Island (Bellarocca), Maniwaya Island, Mongpong Island, and Polo Island.

The province’s economy relies heavily on agriculture, particularly coconuts and rice. But the tourism industry is poised to contribute more as the opening of Marinduque Airport is expected to pave way to lot of opportunities for businesses to flourish. It is already known for its Moriones Festival held annually during the Holy Week, but it has so much more to offer: from its numerous cave systems to vibrant dive sites to stunning beaches.

More info about Marinduque:

  • Language: Tagalog (Marinduque dialect). The Marinduque Tagalog is said to be the result of the natural incorporation of pre-Spanish Tagalog, Bikol language, and Visayan language. They can understand standard Tagalog. English is also relatively spoken and understood.
  • Currency: Philippine peso (PHP, ₱). PHP 100 is around USD 1.91, EUR 1.70, or SGD 2.60 (as of April 2019).
  • Mode of payment: Cash is preferred. As of writing, ATMs are limited, so be sure to bring enough cash with you.
  • Electricity Info: 220V, 60Hz. Socket Type A.

HOW TO GET TO MARINDUQUE

GOOD NEWS! You can now reach Marinduque from Manila in just an hour or less by air instead of going through the eight-hour-long land-and-sea transit. Cebu Pacific Air flies three times weekly between Manila and Marinduque.

On April 1, 2019, the inaugural flight from Manila’s NAIA Terminal 4 to Marinduque Airport was finally launched. This marked the beginning of Cebu Pacific Air’s Manila-Marinduque operations.

marinduque tour package 2022

Marinduque Airport is located at Barangay Masiga in the town of Gasan, near the border with Boac, which is the provincial capital. Cebu Pacific flies three times weekly — Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday — between Manila and Marinduque. The travel time is about an hour. You can book online and check the fares via Cebu Pacific website. The roundtrip fare ranges from P3,000 to P4,000, depending on the season.

If you prefer the bus and ferry, we’ll have a separate post for that.

HOW TO GET AROUND MARINDUQUE

You can travel the whole province within a day via its circumferential road that covers all of its six municipalities. But of course, it would be great if you spend more days and stay long per stop. From the airport, you can either take the jeepney or the tricycle to get to the towns or to your hotel.

  • Jeepney. The main mode of transportation when traveling from town to town. The minimum fare is P10 per person and the maximum is P25. If you have no idea how much is the fare to your destination, the jeepney terminals display the fare matrix. The last trip is around 4 PM or 5 PM.
  • Tricycle. Traveling within towns, the locals take the tricycles. The minimum fare per person is P13. The tricycle terminals also post the fare matrix to guide the passengers.
  • Pump Boat. For transit between the mainland and the nearby islands. Boat rental fee depends on the size of the boat, the destinations, and other inclusions.
  • Own vehicle. You may also bring your own car or motorcycle (even bicycles!); however, this will incur an additional fee on top of your ferry transit fare. The RoRo cargo fee charges P1,000 for motorcycles and around P2500 for cars. Make sure to gas up before going to Marinduque as gasoline in the province is relatively pricier than in Quezon.
Note: As of writing, bicycle and motorcycle rentals are not yet popular in the province. Tricycle tours are also rare if none at all. If DIY is not your thing or if you have seniors and kids with you, you can seek the service of DOT-accredited tour agencies and operators. One of the highly recommended is Dream Favor Travel and Tours.

WHERE TO STAY IN MARINDUQUE

As the capital of Marinduque, Boac is the center of commerce. It harbors most of the government offices and commercial establishments such as restaurants, shops, banks, market, and accommodations. It is also the only town that shares borders with all the other five municipalities; therefore, Boac is the preferred jump-off point to all other tourist attractions in Marinduque.

marinduque tour package 2022

During our visit, we stayed at the relatively new Balar Hotel and Spa in Boac. It has all the basic amenities like toiletries, towels, and lounge. Aside from that, it has free Wi-Fi, a spa service, a restaurant, and a bar. If you want a taste of history, you may reserve a room at Boac Hotel, the oldest hotel in Marinduque (52 years!). It only has 16 rooms, so you have to book in advance, especially if you are visiting during the Holy Week. There are other budget hotels, guesthouses, and inns.

If you want to stay near Poctoy Beach , here are the other accommodations in the town of Torrijos:

  • Villa Briones. Check Rates & Availability!

THINGS TO DO IN MARINDUQUE

Moriones festival.

marinduque tour package 2022

One of the country’s oldest festivals, Moriones, locally known as “Moryonan”, has become synonymous to the province of Marinduque. Held annually during the Holy Week, Moriones is widely celebrated by both locals and tourists. Local participants dressed in Roman soldier uniform march down the main road connecting the towns of Gasan, Boac, Mogpog, and Santa Cruz. Usually, the two largest towns — Boac and Santa Cruz — present the reenactment of the moment when an unnamed Roman soldier (a blind “Moryon”), struck Jesus in his side with a lance while crucified on the cross and was able to see after the blood droplets from the wound touched his eyes. If every province has an official mascot, the Moryon is a no-brainer choice for Marinduque.

Poctoy Beach

marinduque tour package 2022

Surrounded by bodies of water, the island province offers pristine beaches that can be enjoyed all year round. The beaches of Marinduque are not too crowded (yet). Poctoy Beach in Torrijos is the most prominent beach in Marinduque. It has fine cream-colored sand and clear cerulean waters. Mt. Malindig is visible from the beach, so you can revel in its beauty while swimming or just chilling on the beach. This is where the locals usually hang out, so food and cottages are not a problem. A few resorts are also being constructed in and around the area.

Tres Reyes Island Hopping

marinduque tour package 2022

Gaspar, Melchor, and Baltazar, collectively known as the Tres Reyes Islands , are the popular island-hopping destinations in Marinduque. From the Gasan Freedom Park, these islands are already visible. There are locals residing on the biggest island, Gaspar. Island hopping rates are P1,000 – P1,500 for all three islands and P500 – P600 for Gaspar Island only.

Maniwaya Island

Maniwaya Island is another popular island destination in Marinduque. From Buyabod Port, boat rental rate is P1000-1500 per boat ride to Maniwaya Island and approximately P4,000 for Maniwaya Island, Palad Sandbar, and Ungab Rock Formation. If you are coming from Maniwaya, the boat rental for Palad and Ungab is approximately P1,500.

Mount Malindig

marinduque tour package 2022

Located on the southernmost portion of the province and towering at 1,157 meters above sea level, Mount Malindig is the highest peak in Marinduque. It is a favorite hiking destination, boasting a rich endemic flora and fauna. It is said to be a potentially active stratovolcano, which makes it more interesting. It has three peaks — the central (location of the old caldera), the south (the rockies), and the north (the highest). From the main road covering the towns of Buenavista and Torrijos, the mountain proudly announces its presence as it dominates the landscape.

Malbog Sulfur Resort

marinduque tour package 2022

Springing from the mighty Mount Malindig is another crowd magnet — the natural sulfur baths in Barangay Malbog, Buenavista. Malbog Sulfur Resort is located at the foot of the mountain. Locals and foreign patrons frequent the place for its healing properties, especially those with skin problems and diseases as it is said to effectively cure them. P45 is the entrance fee for adults and P30 for kids, PWDs, and senior citizens.

Marinduque Visita Iglesia

marinduque tour package 2022

Marinduque is dotted with historic and charming churches. Established in 1977, the Cathedral-Parish of the Immaculate Conception and Diocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Biglang Awa or simply Boac Cathedral is one of the prominent churches in Marinduque. It sits atop a hill at the town center, providing a scenic view of the town. Near the church is the Church Museum. Similarly, St. Joseph Church in Gasan is situated on a hill, giving pilgrims and visitors a picturesque view of the town and Tablas Strait. The church’s interior is a work of art too! Do not miss the “coconut shell mosaic” that gives a unique character to the church. Other churches in Marinduque are Church of the Holy Child in Buenavista, St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish Church in Torrijos, Holy Cross Parish in Santa Cruz, and San Isidro Labrador Church in Mogpog.

Marinduque Cultural and Heritage Tour

Marinduque is still provincial in the real sense of the word — no cities, all towns. The largest town, Boac and Santa Cruz, have the large concentration of residents, but even these commercialized towns are still laidback without the presence of modern buildings, malls, and even fast food chains which makes the province more charming. The towns are still dominated by local structures that breathe culture and speak of heritage like the old ancestral houses (both the traditional Filipino and Spanish-influenced houses), Boac Town Hall, Casa de Don Emilio, the churches, and many others.

If you want to know more about the history of Marinduque, you may also visit the National Museum of the Philippines – Marinduque (also called Boac Museum). If you want to shop for pasalubong, the marketplace is a good place to marvel at and purchase Marinduque’s iconic products like the local food, traditional handicraft items, and Moriones masks.

But I will never forget my “Putong” experience! This tradition, which they also call “Tubong” is Marinduqueños way of welcoming and honoring their guests and friends. Even without the putong, I already felt the warmth of the Marinduqueños, but to participate in it was something that I will remember for the rest of my life. Truly a heartfelt welcome!

Luzon Datum of 1911 (Balanacan Station)

marinduque tour package 2022

Interestingly, Marinduque, the “Heart of the Philippines”, is also the site of the Luzon Datum of 1911 National Landmark. Found on top of Mt. Mataas in Mogpog, this is the monumental rock marker that identifies it as the geodetic center of the Philippines. Aside from the marker, there’s also a view deck that affords visitors a panorama of the surrounding areas including Tayabas Bay, Mompong Pass, and part of Tablas Strait.

Note that you must climb 468 steps to reach the point. But don’t worry! There are several designated rest areas should you feel the need to take a break. It’s best to go there late in the afternoon to wait for the sunset — a truly rewarding sight after the tiring climb up the concrete steps. Don’t forget to register at Barangay Hinanggayon’s office. Also, you may consider hiring a tricycle to ensure that you will have a ride back, especially if you plan to see the sunset.

Marinduque Food Trip

marinduque tour package 2022

The absence of popular food chains and restaurants works to the advantage of the local cuisine. It highlights the flavors of Marinduque, adding rich character and identity to each meal. Casa de Don Emilio offers authentic local dishes such as Ulang-ulang (sour soup with shrimp and young coconut meat), Kare-kare (which looks and tastes more like bopis and dinuguan), and Dinilawan na Native Chicken (uses turmeric for flavor and color).

Here are other must-try products: pinaltok (version of ginataang bilu-bilo), tuba drink, bibingka “lalaki”, sinagol (buco noodle soup), saludsod (cassava pancake), Arrowroot cookies, coco sugar, and gulay na santol. You can buy your pasalubong at Rejano’s Bakery, Boac Hotel, and the marketplace.

Other Marinduque Attractions

marinduque tour package 2022

Elephant Island is also known as Bellarocca, the once exclusive luxury resort and spa that has ceased its operation a couple of years ago. At present, there are no available boats going there as it’s not operational. You can view the island from the main road (Circumferential Road).

Hakupan Island , just 20 minutes off the coast of Santa Cruz town. You can actually view the island from Mt. Mataas. From Buyabod Port, you can also charter boats to Polo Island and Mongpong Island .

Other attractions include:

  • Boac: Kabugsugan Falls, Marl Insects and Butterfly Culture, Amana Resort
  • Gasan: Gasan Nature and Butterfly Park, Butterfly Farm, Talao Cave

OTHER MARINDUQUE TIPS FOR THE POOR TRAVELER

  • Eat dinner early. Commercial establishments like restaurants and cafés close as early as 8 PM.
  • Protect yourself from the harmful UV rays. Outdoor activities are fun but don’t forget to apply sunscreen to avoid damaging your skin from too much exposure from the sun. Remember to use eco-friendly sunscreen. These are products that don’t contain chemicals like oxybenzone, parabens, and benzophenone.
  • Be mindful of the transportation schedule. The last trip for jeepneys is usually at 5 PM. If you go beyond that and your hotel is in another town, you will have to charter a tricycle to get to your hotel. You will have to spend more.
  • Dispose of your trash properly. Do not litter and leave trash anywhere — beach, mountain, caves, etc. If you can’t see a trash bin, take your garbage with you until you can dispose of it properly.
  • Practice sustainable tourism. Support the local products; however, ensure that the making of the products didn’t endanger other creatures or harm the environment. Bring your own water bottles and eco bag to lessen plastic wastes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MARINDUQUE

Is marinduque safe.

Marinduque and Batanes alternately take the top spot for the Most Peaceful Province in the Philippines ranking by the Philippine National Police and Philippine Security Forces. Safe to say that you don’t need to worry too much when it comes to security in the province.

However, this doesn’t mean that you can just leave your belongings unattended. You are still responsible for securing your stuff. Same goes to your safety while doing activities: wear life vests, wear aqua shoes (especially on rocky shores), and wear a helmet if you are going around on a motorcycle.

When is the best time to visit Marinduque?

Summer in the Philippines covers the months of March to May. Locals and tourists flock to the beach, particularly Poctoy Beach in the town of Torrijos, and the islands to cool themselves off.

The busiest month is either March or April, depends on where the Holy Week will fall. This is in preparation for and celebration of the Moriones Festival. If you plan to participate and experience the weeklong feast, you need to book your accommodations at least four months in advance. Here’s a list of other festivals in Marinduque:

  • Haring Karabaw Festival (Santa Cruz, January)
  • Kalutang Festival (February)
  • Gasang-Gasang Festival (Gasan, Easter Sunday)
  • Kangga Festival (Mogpog, May)
  • Kalesayahan sa Gasan (Gasan, August)
  • Bila-Bila Festival (Boac, December)

Are there ATMs in Marinduque?

Yes, there are ATMs in Marinduque. Most of them are located in the capital town of Boac including Philippine National Bank (PNB) and RCBC. There’s also a PNB branch in Santa Cruz, the largest town in Marinduque. If you opt to take the ferry to the province, you can also withdraw while still in Quezon. Other options are money transfer like Western Union, LBC, Cebuana Lhuillier, and Palawan Pawnshop. But then again, as mentioned previously, it’s best to have enough cash with you when you go to the island province.

This travel guide was made possible by Cebu Pacific Air.

Maniwaya Island Travel Guide: Marinduque’s Prime Beach Destination

Maniwaya

Merely six hours of land travel from Manila and you will be transported to Maniwaya Island , Marinduque’s prime beach destination.

Situated off the coast of the town of Santa Cruz on the eastern part of Marinduque, Maniwaya Island beckons with its white sandy beach, disappearing sandbar and other nearby attractions that will surely synthesize your love for the salt water.

Maniwaya Island

Simple yet priceless pleasures await in Maniwaya. Bask on its white sand beach, catch a boat to Palad Sandbar and Ungab Rock Formation of Mongpong Island, dive or snorkel on its vivid waters, or just catch the island’s idyllic sunrise or sunset.

With its proximity and accessibility, the island is a favorite weekend getaway of those based in Metro Manila and Southern Tagalog provinces. It is a great prelude to the heart of the Philippines, an experience that will satisfy your cravings for the sea, an ideal escape from the summer heat!

Explore, experience and enjoy the simple pleasures of Maniwaya Island!

Maniwaya Island

How to Get to Maniwaya Island

Going to Maniwaya Island involves land and sea transport via Quezon Province. There are two routes – via General Luna Port and via Dahican Port of Lucena City.

Via General Luna Port

The easiest and preferred route is via General Luna in Southern Quezon’s Bondoc Peninsula.

Manila to General Luna

Superlines and AB Liner buses from Cubao, Sampaloc and Alabang going to Catanauan and Mulanay via Unisan pass by General Luna Crossing which is just a five minutes tricycle ride to the port. Travel time is around five hours and fare starts at P320. Advise the conductor or the driver to drop you off at General Luna Crossing if you are taking these buses.

Manila to Lucena City Grand Terminal to General Luna

Alternatively, you can catch a bus to Lucena City Grand Terminal. Jac Liner, Jam Transit, Lucena Liner and Ceres Transport have buses bound to Lucena Grand Central Terminal. Buses leave almost every hour every day for approximately three hours of travel, fare is as low as P210. You can book your bus ticket from Manila to Lucena City and vice versa below:

BOOK YOUR BUS FROM MANILA TO LUCENA

From Lucena Grand Central Terminal, there are local buses and vans straight to General Luna or you may take the Catanauan, Mulanay and San Francisco bound vehicles that pass by General Luna Crossing. Van is the preferred method of travel for faster travel time of around two hours, fare is P150 per passenger one-way.

General Luna to Maniwaya Island

There is only one departure daily of the public boat going directly to Maniwaya Island at 10AM, travel time is approximately one (1) hour and fare is P150 per person one-way.

You may also charter a boat from General Luna to Maniwaya, rate starts at P1,500 for a small boat that can ferry around four persons.

Maniwaya Island

Via Dalahican Port of Lucena

This route is a bit inconvenient if your destination is just Maniwaya Island as it involves numerous land and sea transfers. But this is ideal if you will be exploring mainland Marinduque first.

Manila to Dalahican Port to Buyabod Port of Santa Cruz, Marinduque

Catch a direct bus from Cubao or Buendia Going to Marinduque , Jam Liner and Jac Liner serve this route. You can book your bus ticket from Manila to Marinduque and vice versa below:

BOOK YOUR BUS FROM MANILA TO MARINDUQUE

The bus travels to Dalahican Port, boards a ro-ro ferry to Balanacan Port of Mogpog and circumnavigate the circumferential road of the province. If you’re taking this route, ask to be dropped off at Buyabod Crossing in Santa Cruz, total travel time from Manila is around seven (7) hours and fare is approximately P880 one-way. At Buyabod Crossing, transfer to a tricycle to take you to Buyabod Port for P10 per passenger.

Another option is to take a bus to Dalahican Port. Jac Liner, Jam Transit, Lucena Liner and Ceres Transport have buses bound to Dalahican Port leaving almost every hour daily for approximately three hours of travel, fare is as low as P210.00.

From Dalahican Port, transfer to a Montenegro or StarHorse ro-ro going to Balanacan Port. There are numerous departures daily, regular fare is P260 one-way and travel time is approximately three (3) hours. Upon arrival in Balanacan Port, transfer to a jeepney to Santa Cruz and then to a tricycle going to Buyabod Port.

Buyabod to Maniwaya Island

There is usually one public boat going to Maniwaya Island from Buyabod Port daily departing in the morning but extra departure at noon or in the afternoon is mounted occassionaly. If you miss the public boat, you may charter a boat to Maniwaya Island starting at P800, travel time is no more than 30 minutes.

Touted as, “The Heart of the Philippines,” the island is your ultimate getaway for fun, thrill, and adventure. Its ridge to reef landscape offers an amazing diversity of natural wonders.

Brace yourself for white beaches, crystal-clear waters, cascading falls, mystic caves, and many more when you come here.

Quick Facts:

  • Location: MIMAROPA Region

marinduque tour package 2022

Imagine standing in a lush setting as thousands of colorful butterflies fly all around. That’s exactly how you will feel when you visit the Butterfly Garden, one of the famous tourist spots in Gasan, Marinduque. The town, in fact, is the butterfly capital of the Philippines.

2. Maniwaya Island

Maniwaya Island is one of the best tourist spots/attractions/destinations in Marinduque

Maniwaya Island boasts one of the longest stretches of powdery white sands in the province. You’ll feel like you are in the famed Boracay when you come here.

Add to that a mesmerizing view of the crystal-clear waters that are so inviting. Because the surrounding seas teem with marine life, you can snorkel here all day long.

From here, you can also check out the stunning Palad Sandbar and the enchanting Ungab Rock Formations. You’ll never run out of things to do here. That is why it’s one of the most popular tourist spots in Sta Cruz, Marinduque.

3. Kawa-Kawa Falls

Kawa-kawa falls is one of the best tourist spots/attractions/destinations in Marinduque

Have you ever thought of climbing from the top of a waterfall towards its deep pool? That may sounds scary but thrilling at the same time. So, if you want to have such kind of adrenaline-pumping experience, hike your way to Kawa-Kawa Falls.

Kawa-Kawa falls is only around 15 feet high with a circular and deep catch basin. Try climbing the cliff and plunge or dive your way to the pool. Just make sure you know how to swim and you hit the deep part. I do that always wherever waterfall I go.

The crystal-clear and cold waters will surely give you that soothing experience you’re after. Swim around the pool as you relish the lush surroundings.

  • Location/Jump-off: Brgy Bangcuangan, Santa Cruz, Marinduque

4. Poctoy Underwater Museum

Poctor Underwater Museum is near the Poctoy White Beach. It’s a man-made attraction set on a natural setting. When you dive here, you’ll find a statue of the iconic Morion.

  • Location/Jump-off: Torrijos, Marinduque

5. Malbog Sulfur Spring

marinduque tour package 2022

Aside from the powdery beaches, you might want to have a relaxing moment at the Malbog Sulfur Spring. The sulfuric waters emanate from the slopes of Mount Malindig, an inactive volcano.

Not only will you enjoy the sticky, thermal waters but also experience the healing properties. Research shows that sulfuric springs can cleanse one of skin illnesses as well as colds. The place is also a good hang out especially for families and friends.

  • Location/Jump-off: Brgy Malbog, Buenavista, Marinduque
  • Entrance Fee: Php 50 per person, Php 30 for Senior, PWD, Children

6. Poctoy White Beach

Poctoy White Beach is one of the best tourist spots/attractions/destinations in Marinduque

Another ideal spot for relaxation is Poctoy White Beach. As its name suggests, it also features white sands that extends for more than a kilometer.

One could not also help it but just stare at the mesmerizing waters. I bet expert swimmers would eventually take the plunge upon seeing the turquoise waters.

From the beach, you can also view the towering Mount Malindig, one of the hiking tourist spots in Marinduque. It’s a public beach so expect large crowd especially during weekends and holidays. But don’t worry; you’ll enjoy the rustic sceneries here.

It is one of the best tourist attractions in Marinduque.

  • Location/Jump-off: Torijos, Marinduque

7. Mount Malindig

Mount Malindig is one of the best tourist spots/attractions/destinations in Marinduque

For adventurers like me, the journey is sometimes not enough when no hiking is involved. So if you’re like that, trek your way to the majestic Mount Malindig.

Because the trails run on mostly gently-sloping terrains, assaulting Mount Malindig works for newbie hikers.

Along the way, expect to see unique flora and fauna species as the mountain is a critical biodiversity area. As you reach the higher elevations, you’ll witness alluring mossy forests.

While atop, you’ll catch a panoramic view of the rolling landscapes, beaches, and islands of Marinduque.

Hopefully, ecotourism will help sustain the rich flora and fauna of Mt Malindig.

  • Location/Jump-off: Buenavista & Torrijos, Marinduque
  • Elevation/Height: 1,157 meters above sea level
  • Entrance Fee: Php 45 per person

Mongpong Island is one of the best tourist spots/attractions/destinations in Marinduque

Mongpong Island is one of the farthest tourist spots in Marinduque. But that’s all the more reason to have a peek especially if you’re into less touristy destinations.

A known landmark here is Ungab Rock located on the eastern part of the island. The rock formation resembles the shape of an arch and it towers for almost 100 feet.

From where Ungab Rock stands, you’ll find a long stretch of creamy-white beach. Although it is remote, some people live here. You can have meaningful interactions with them, learn about their culture, and share stories.

  • Location/Jump-off: Santa Cruz, Marinduque

9. Boac Cathedral

Boac Cathedral is one of the historical tourist spots in Marinduque. It dates back to the Spanish colonizers who initiated the construction of the Cathedral. It’s known for its Gothic inspired architecture with resemblance to the churches in Latin America.

During the revolution against the Spaniards, Filipino warriors would often come here to seek blessing before heading out for war. The church also saw the blessing of the Philippine Revolutionary Flag in 1899.

  • Location/Jump-off: Boac, Marinduque

10. Bathala Cave

Bathala Cave is one of the best tourist spots/attractions/destinations in Marinduque

Chasing for a memorable spelunking experience? Don’t miss visiting Bathala Cave system where you’ll discover 7 caves in all. Only four of these, however, are open for tourism. These caves are: Church Cave, Cemetery Cave, Python Cave, and Secret Cave. Each of this has unique feature to offer.

My favorite is the Python Cave which is literally home to several pythons, one of the biggest snake species. You can spot them as you explore the cave. But don’t worry. They are harmless as long as you follow proper practice. The locals are experts so for safety, they’ve got you covered.

11. Tres Reyes Islands

Tres Reyes Island is one of the best tourist spots/attractions/destinations in Marinduque

If you’re chasing secluded tourist spots in Gasan, Marinduque, visit the Tres Reyes Islands. There are three islands composing it namely, Baltazar Island, Melchor Islands, and Gaspar Island.

Craving for an amazing snorkeling experience? Check out Baltazar Island which thrives with endemic marine species as well as colorful coral reefs. Want to try cliff diving or jumping? Visit the Melchor Island, known for its scenic cliffs along its shores.

Then there’s Gaspar Island which is the biggest but it has only limited beaches. Nevertheless, there’s just nothing like it staying here because of the incredibly tranquil setting.

  • Location/Jump-off: Gasan, Marinduque

12. Mang Illeol Sunflower Garden

That’s right! You’ll not only find beautiful sunflowers in Benguet or Baguio City. You catch sight of them at Mang Illeol Sunflower Garden. It’s not as big as those found in Benguet, however, it still pays off visiting it for a Benguet-feel like experience here.

  • Entrance Fee: Php 20

13. Bagumbungan Cave

marinduque tour package 2022

Another favorite spelunking tourist spot in Marinduque is Bagumbungan Cave. Inside, you’ll find a variety of fascinating stalactite and stalagmite rock formations. Some are so bizarre-looking that you’ll think you’re in another planet.

Aside from rock formations, the cave features small waterfalls and a brook containing multiple pools. Take a look at these pools and you’ll find different marine creatures such as eels, catfish, shrimps, and crabs.

You can also chance on owls and bats inhabiting the cave. That just goes to show that Bagumbungan Cave remains pristine, therefore, there is the need to protect it.

  • Location/Jump-off: Brgy San Isidro, Santa Cruz, Marinduque
  • Entrance Fee: Php 150 to Php 300 per person
  • Fee for Certificate: Php 50 (Optional)
  • Minimum Pax for a Guide: 2

14. St Joseph Parish

Another ideal spot for prayer and reflection is at St Joseph Parish, now one of the most frequented tourist spots in Gasan, Marinduque. It’s a huge church that can cater to thousands of worshippers in a given Sunday.

Aside from its colonial design, the church’s ceiling showcases patterns of the Buri fan, a popular handicraft in the area. A few meters from the church, you’ll find a garden where you can have a tranquil retreat. You can also see here the old bells of the church.

15. Luzon Datum of 1911

marinduque tour package 2022

The Luzon Datum is a stone marker, nestled on a site that is considered the very center of the Philippines. Also called Station Balanacan, the stone marker sits on top of a hill referred to as Mt Mataas or Mataas na Bundok.

Before visiting Luzon Datum, please proceed to the barangay hall first in courtesy of the local officials and to inform them of your visit. Then, you can follow a road and another trail to reach the site.

Luzon Datum is one of the emerging tourist spots in Marinduque.

  • Location/Jump-off: Brgy Hinanggayon, Mogpog
  • Tricycle Fare: Php 150 from the barangay hall

16. Marinduque National Museum

To learn more about the rich culture and history of the province, check out Marinduque National Museum. Here, you’ll find mostly photos depicting the culture of the local people. There are also retrieved items from sunken ships dating back during the wars.

The building where the museum lies is considered historical having been built in 1887. It is now one of the most frequented tourist spots in Boac, Marinduque.

  • Entrance Fee: Php 20 for adults, Php 10 for children

MANIWAYA ISLAND: DIY TRAVEL GUIDE (ITINERARY + BUDGET) 2023

by thepinay solobackpacker | Jul 4, 2023 | Itinerary , Marinduque , Travel Guide | 0 comments

Maniwaya Island is a small, palm-fringed island off the coast of Marinduque that  made its mark as an ideal weekend getaway of urbanites. It’s a tropical cliché, where you can bask in the cream sand while sipping fruit shake or halo-halo or while reading your favorite book perhaps.

Not far from Maniwaya Island, about 30 minutes away by boat, is a mere speck on the ocean – Palad Sandbar, a usual stop during the Maniwaya Island hopping tour.  Aside from Palad Sandbar, you’ll most likely be whisked away to Ungab Rock Formation and Mongpong Island. I heard the sea here have great snorkeling too, but we didn’t get to experience that, so I can’t really tell you much about it. Maniwaya Island hopping is a great activity for families or group of friends, but if you are a solo traveler, don’t fret, as you can ask your beach resort or the boat operator if you can join the island hopping with other tourists to save you a few bucks.

So, if you are craving for a DIY trip to Maniwaya Island soon, here’s a Maniwaya Island Travel Guide to help you plan your travel itinerary .  It’s best to combine this with a visit to mainland Marinduque to explore its other tourist spots.

MANIWAYA ISLAND TRAVEL GUIDE

  • Electricity in Maniwaya Island now runs 24 hours, but blackout is a normal occurrence, so make sure to charge your gadgets and camera batteries.
  • You can buy fresh seafood, depending on the catch of the day.
  • Meals are available in Maniwaya Island.
  •   If you are a solo traveler, ask the boat operator or your beach resort if you can join a group tour to save money.

Malbog Sulfur Spring nestles within lush greenery surrounded by verdant flora and fauna. Its warm and bluish-white sulfuric water is believed to have therapeutic and healing benefits. The spring has two swimming pools, and both have medicinal properties that can cure skin diseases.

The stream directly comes from the mountain and goes down into a spring pool where tourists can have a rejuvenating dip. Its water is safe to drink and is even believed to cure acute and chronic cases of skin ailments. Some tourists even bring bottles of sulfuric water on their way home.

The Ungab Rock Formation in Mongpong Island

Photo by El Marinduqueños Island Resort

Off the northeastern coast of Marinduque is Mongpong Island, a charming islet with striking rock formations and a pristine white-sand beach. It has clear blue waters where you can see through colorful reef fishes underwater.

Upon arrival on the island, the Ungab Rock Formation is the first thing that will pique your interest. The huge colossal rock sits on the island’s turquoise waters and white sand. Carved out of the base rock is a triangular hole that forms a land bridge connecting you to the other side of the beach.

The giant boulder is a sight to behold and a perfect backdrop for your selfies and group photos. Plus, the water underneath the rock arch is shallow, making it a safe spot to swim for kids. The white sand is also a mixture of smooth pebbles and coral fragments.

8. Paadjao falls

While Marinduque is famous for its scenic beaches, there is one enchanting waterfall that stands out from the rest of the Mogpog Marinduque tourist spots, the Paadjao Falls. Situated in Mogpog municipality, the Paadjao Falls is accessible via a 10-minute trek from the highway, which is only 5.5KM away.

  • Read our article on the best waterfalls in the Philippines

The hidden cascade gently flows from a 15-feet tall rocky cliff down to a 6-feet deep basin with cold and jade-green waters. It majestically nestles underneath the cool shade of verdant greenery and tall trees, making you feel a lot closer to nature. Surrounding the falls are huge and edgy rocks, so be extra careful when crossing the river and falls.

Paadjao Falls is connected to the Mogpog River downstream. It is also an ideal picnic spot where guests can put up tents for camping. Aside from Paadjao Falls, there are other underrated waterfalls in Marinduque such as Norada Falls, Kawa Kawa Falls, and Bulusukan Falls.

7. Marinduque Wildlife Sanctuary

Up next is a piece of greenery that occupies nearly 9,000 hectares of land, the Marinduque Wildlife Sanctuary. It is home to several bird species such as the Zebra Dove, Serpent Eagle, Brahminy Kite, and Philippine Scops Owl. Adding to the lush green landscape are native trees such as Ipil, Narra, Yakal, and Molave.

Inside the wildlife sanctuary are caves that serve as a habitat for rare species, like the cave-dwelling freshwater shrimp. Some wild animals inhabiting the protected land are the Philippine warty pig, the Philippine deer, the cloud rat, and the green racket tail.

The Marinduque Wildlife Sanctuary was declared as a protected land area in 2004 under Presidential Proclamation No. 696 . Its forest watershed encompasses the municipalities of Boac, Gasan, Buenavista, Torrijos and Sta. Cruz. The Marinduque Wildlife Sanctuary is a must-visit hiking, camping, and bird-watching spot for nature lovers and adventurous travelers.

6. Boac Cathedral

Baoc Cathedral's facade

Built as a fortress in 1792, the Boac Cathedral became a relevant part of the Marinduqueños colorful history and culture since its construction in the Spanish era. The locals used it as a hiding place during a Moro attack in the 1800s. Consequently, it also served as the venue of the blessing of the Philippine Revolutionary flag in 1899.

Upon entering the church, you will see beautifully carved doors and exterior walls that are made of red bricks. Inspired by Hispanic Gothic architecture, the cathedral’s interior and ceiling showcase simple yet intricate carvings. Because of its cultural and historical significance, it is considered one of the must-see Boac Marinduque spots.

The cathedral’s grand facade and bell tower are composed of adobe stones and rough terra cotta. There are also massive buttresses that resemble the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Paoay Church in Ilocos.

Boat docked on one of the Tres Reyes Isands

Another postcard-worthy spot in Marinduque, the Treys Reyes Islands, is nestled off the coast of Gasan municipality. The jump-off point is at Gasan port where tour boats await passengers before heading to the neighboring Three Kings islets, namely Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltazar.

  • Book a Tres Reyes Islands island hopping tour for your Marinduque trip  or check out other destinations for island hopping in the Philippines

The largest among the three is Gaspar Island, a tranquil paradise with crystal clear waters and fine white sand. Next is Melchor Island, featuring rock formations covered in lush vegetation. Lastly, the Baltazar Island offers a lovely haven for those seeking a secluded spot to laze on the sand and lounge in beach cabanas.

Among the must-see spots on Baltazar Island is a hilltop lighthouse, which was built during the American colonial period in 1910. Before capping off your island escapade, don’t forget to see the unique rock formations at Kulapnit Cave. Then, drop by the Kay Bungo Cave, a historical site where elongated skulls were found.

Mount Malindig in Marinduque

Majestically standing on an elevation of 1,157 meters above sea level, Mount Malindig is a must-visit Buenavista Marinduque tourist spot and is considered the highest peak in the province. It is a stratovolcano situated at the island’s southern tip and west side of the Bondoc Peninsula on Luzon Island.

  • Read our article about hiking in the Philippines

Because of its vast landscape and thriving ecosystem, Mount Malindig is comparable to Mt. Banahaw and Mt. Makiling in Quezon and Laguna provinces of Southern Luzon. At the base of Mount Malindig lies a therapeutic sulfuric spring called the Malbog Sulfur Spring. Many locals and tourists flock here to experience the healing powers of the spring.

Mount Malindig is a hike-friendly destination for mountaineers. Based on the Pinoy Mountaineer rating system, it has a difficulty level of 4, which requires a minor climb. Having a trail classification level 1 and 2, Mount Malinig has a well-established trail with somewhat rugged and steep paths.

Tourists explore Bagumbungan Cave

For those who like to experience spelunking in the Philippines, you can check out one of Marinduque’s subterranean wonders, the Bagumbungan Cave. It is often compared to Sumaguing Cave in Sagada because of its stalactites and stalagmites in impressive shapes and forms. Bagumbungan Cave is a great spelunking spot that features magnificent rock formations.

  • Book a day tour to Bagumbungan Cave in Marinduque

The jump-off point is at the Santa Cruz town where the cave is located. At the cave’s entrance, there is a pathway leading down the waist-deep underground river basin. To get there, you have to pass through slippery surfaces and narrow passages. The path gets a bit more challenging as you slide down the muddy paths and squeeze yourself between huge rocks.

Bagumbungan Cave is 1.9KM long and has a beginner-friendly trail, ideal for those who are new to spelunking. Some parts of the cave are off-limits for tourists. It remains largely unexplored, making it a wonderland for adventure seekers out there.

Poctoy White Beach's shore

Among the well-known attractions in Marinduque is the Poctoy White Beach, a long stretch of fine white sand lined with palm trees in the coastal municipality of Torrijos. Surrounding the powdery beach are crystal clear waters that are ideal for swimming and kayaking. There are beachfront huts and cottages with chairs and tables, perfect for spending laidback afternoons on the beach.

Underneath the crystalline waters is a sight to behold for scuba divers. The Poctoy Underwater Museum showcases giant Moryon monuments, which symbolize Marinduqueños iconic Moriones festival that happens every Holy Week.

Aside from being one of the idyllic beaches in Marinduque, Poctoy White Beach remains to be among the emerging Torrijos Marinduque tourist spots. It attracts many local and international travelers annually because of its pristine shores and panoramic sunset views glowing over the horizon.

1. Maniwaya Island

Palad Sandbar, north of Maniwaya Island

Among all the famed destinations in Marinduque, Maniwaya Island should be on top of your bucket list. It is one of the several islands in Marinduque dotting Santa Cruz town that can rival famous white-sand beaches in the Philippines . Along the shoreline, you can find budget-friendly resorts and glamping cottages that resemble those in Bali, Indonesia.

  • Book a Maniway Island tour for your beach getaway

Off the northern coast of the island is Palad Sandbar , a patch of white sand that unravels and seemingly invites you to dip into the surrounding crystal blue waters. The best time to visit the sandbar is in the morning, as the whole strip of white sand appears during low tide.

Maniwaya Island in Marinduque (Travel Story & 2024 Guide Update)

 alt=

I enjoy exploring the less mainstream destinations in the Philippines because it always reminds me how beautiful our country is. Beyond Boracay and the like, countless islands can truly take your breath away. Take, for example, Jomalig, among many others! Discovering these places is an adventure in itself.

A few months ago, my girlfriend, Eloi, and I explored Burias Island in Masbate. Just a few weeks later, we ventured to Maniwaya Island in Sta. Cruz, Marinduque.

Marinduque hasn’t been widely discussed among tourists until recently when social media started buzzing with stunning photos and experiences shared by travelers about this province. The first time I saw a picture of Maniwaya Island, I was captivated. I wondered, “Does Marinduque have such beautiful beaches?”

It was Eloi who encouraged and convinced me to go on this island getaway. Besides, blogging about the place seemed like a great idea, right? Haha!

Whenever I travel with my girlfriend, I ensure everything is at least somewhat planned. Although I often travel DIY (Do It Yourself), it’s a different scenario with her. Thus, we usually join organized travel events and tours. For our Maniwaya trip, we participated in an adventure organized by a couple, Bes and Son. It was one of the best travel packages we’ve experienced. The hospitality they extended to their guests, the quality of the food, and the friendships we formed were unparalleled.

[Click Here to Check Hotels in Marinduque]

We traveled for about 5 hours by van until we reached Gen. Luna in the province of Quezon , which served as our jump-off point to Maniwaya. From there, it was only an hour’s boat ride until we reached the island.

I was delighted the moment I saw Maniwaya, experiencing the same reaction I had upon witnessing some of the secluded islands in the country.

Clear waters and pristine beaches are always a sight to behold, and Maniwaya is charming in its unique way. We first set up our tent and made sure everything was in order before taking the time to walk along the beach. Our tour coordinator mentioned that lunch would be served in an hour, giving us just enough time to explore the island. Yay!

Maniwaya Island Marinduque

Just like many other girls, Eloi also loves taking pictures. So, as a good boyfriend, we always have to do the things that make our girl happy, right? As a result, we ended up with a lot of photos. And it was all okay; Maniwaya’s beauty and our moments together deserved to be captured.

Maniwaya Island Marinduque

We had a terrific lunch!

The homemade feel of the meals prepared by Bes and Son was delicious, especially the Lumpiang Shanghai and the spicy Adobo. It was our first meal, marking the start of the more satisfying food they served us over two days.

After lunch, we had some free time, as we were scheduled to visit Marinduque’s famous sandbar at 3 PM. Being there during summer, you can just imagine the scorching island heat. It was the perfect time for Eloi and me to swim and feel refreshed. The water was cool and crystal clear, ideal for the summer.

We then settled under a tree, simply sitting there and looking at the beach, another precious moment for us. I remember feeling so calm, relaxed, and sleepy at that time. Just imagine having a satisfying lunch and then enjoying some siesta time on the beach with the one you love. Wow!

To make a long story short, we both took a nap while lying on the sand. It was not an issue for us; we had done the same in Calaguas.

We awoke after a few minutes, ready to explore a new destination on Maniwaya Island.

Palad Sandbar

It was just a 30-minute boat ride from Maniwaya until we reached Palad Sandbar, probably the most popular sandbar in the province.

At first, I was intrigued by some motorboats gathered in the middle of the sea. It was only when we got closer that I realized they were surrounding the sandbar.

Although there were many tourists at the time because it was the weekend, we still found a sweet spot at the farthest part of the sandbar. This allowed us to enjoy its beauty and take some good photos, both together and with our new-found friends. Without a doubt, there are plenty of activities to enjoy on the island.

Ungab Rock Formation

Another stunning tourist destination in Marindique is the Ungab Rock Formation on Mongpong Island. Just a 30-minute boat ride from Maniwaya, we were greeted by stronger waves and these huge rocks that require a second look to fully appreciate.

This place is called Ungab because it is situated in the eastern part of the island, known as Sitio Ungab. It features what looks like a natural bridge or an arch, depending on your perspective. To me, it appears as a bridge with space underneath.

There’s a wide opening beneath the rocks that offers much-needed shade from the sun. Those who prefer to avoid sunburn or darker skin will enjoy swimming below this rock, aside from its clear waters.

Maniwaya Island Marinduque

It is also perfect for those interested in trying some rock climbing.

Our new friends ventured to the farther part of the rocks. As for Eloi and me, after swimming, we simply enjoyed each other’s company on the beach while eating halo-halo. Perfection. 🙂

Maniwaya Island Marinduque

Our trip to Maniwaya has made me realize the importance of exploring the world with someone you love. I plan to write a separate post solely about this topic in the future. But for now, all I know is that I am happy traveling and discovering new places with Eloi.

One afternoon on the beach of Maniwaya, we both sat together enjoying the sunset. She was sleeping on my lap. As I looked at her, and as the last ray of the sun slowly faded, I was reminded again to always cherish the present, the moment. Thank you, Maniwaya, for another wonderful experience.

Travel Guide: Marinduque Loop for Bikers

marinduque tour package 2022

Marinduque is an island province in the Philippines best known for celebrating the Moriones Festival, one of the oldest religious festivals in the country held during Holy Week. Everywhere you go in the province, you can spot references to the icons of the Moriones, men and women in costumes and masks wearing garb of biblical Roman soldiers.

marinduque tour package 2022

While Marinduque is a popular destination during Holy Week, locals say it’s pretty quiet the rest of the year. Interestingly, Marinduque is one of the most peaceful provinces in the country due to its low crime rate, which alternately ranks with the province of Batanes yearly.

marinduque tour package 2022

For riders and cyclists, the island offers an appealing offbeat destination. Marinduque has about 150 kms of paved circumferential road and some very beautiful uncrowded beaches. I’ve been wanting to try bikepacking  (backpacking with your bike) for a while and this offered a perfect introduction to what it’s all about. The Marinduque Loop offers a great biking destination, with steady climbs, rewarding downhills and lots of scenic spots. There’s something really satisfying about being able to circle an entire island by bike.

marinduque tour package 2022

If you’re driving a motorcycle, it may feel a bit too short to loop since it will only take you about 3-4 hours to circle the entire island if you just speed through. You feel the challenge more if you have to pedal power the whole way. For both biking and motorcycling though, you can combine your ride with sightseeing, hiking or camping on the beach to make it a rewarding ride. Those based in Manila can opt to bring their rides on the Roll-on Roll-Off Ferry (RoRo). If you’re riding a motorcycle, you can get to different towns quicker, bring heavier stuff like camping equipment, and have more time to spare for island-hopping or camping on the beaches.

marinduque tour package 2022

It felt very safe and secure just riding on the empty roads. Locals were really friendly. I wouldn’t be afraid to travel, ride and camp out solo here.

Table of Contents

Where exactly is Marinduque?

Marinduque is located in Southwestern Tagalog Region or MIMAROPA, formerly designated as Region IV-B. It lies between Tayabas Bay to the north and Sibuyan Sea to the south. It is west of the Bondoc Peninsula of Quezon province; east of Mindoro Island; and north of the island province of Romblon.

How to get to Marinduque

  • You can sit anywhere in the ferry (first-come first-served arrangement). There’s an air-conditioned cabin with bus-like seats you can recline and an open-air section where you can enjoy the view (if you travel during the day). I also saw enclosed cabin section with beds.
  • There’s a snack bar on the ferry that serves chips, drinks and cup noodles but no full meals. Try to eat or bring food before you ride the ferry so you don’t get hungry.

Manila to Marinduque (direct bus + ferry combo)

JAC Liner also has daily trips from Cubao to Marinduque, that cost P880, with the fare covering the bus ride, ferry and terminal fee at the port. Trips leave at 5:30 pm from Cubao to Marinduque and leave at 2:00 pm from Marinduque to Cubao. Seat reservations are required beforehand.

Drive to Lucena Port and ride the ferry

If you’re in a group with a private vehicle like a pick-up, it might be more convenient to just drive to the Dalahican port in Lucena with all the bikes on board. You can park your vehicles at the Lucena Port or bring it on the RoRo going to Marinduque, so you have a support vehicle there. Motorcycle riders can just drive straight to Lucena too and board the ferry.

  • Drive south from Manila via South Luzon Expressway
  • Exit at Santo Tomas, Batangas
  • Continue driving to San Pablo, Laguna and then to Tiaong, Candeleria, Sariaya and up to Lucena, all in Quezon province.
  • In Lucena, turn right to the Dalahican Port and board the Ro-Ro boats to Balanacan Port in Mogpog or Cawit in Boac.

They have a generator in case of brownouts.  Rates:  P1,500 (good for 2), P2,500, P3,500, Extra bed costs P300 per head.

Day 2: Maniwaya Island (SIDE TRIP)

  • 11:30 am – Ride passenger boat to Maniwaya Island
  • 12:30 pm – Arrival in Maniwaya Island

marinduque tour package 2022

How to get to Maniwaya Island:

  • Regular passenger boats only travel from Buyabod Port to Maniwaya Island twice a day, 7:00 am and 11:30 am and return from Maniwaya Island to Buyabod Port once a day at 6:30 am.
  • Regular boat fare: P70 per passenger
  • We originally planned to leave our bikes at the port since I read there was a place that offered an overnight bike storage fee for P300. But the guards on duty suggested that we just take the bikes with us so we could use it on the island.
  • Bike cargo fee on boat: P50 each on the way there, but only P30 each on the way back.
  • Maniwaya is a tiny island, with small paths passable only by bicycle or motorcycle. If you’re staying at the far end of the beach, it’s helpful to have bikes because you may have to ride a habal-habal (P20/ride) or walk at least 20 mins. going to and from the port to your chosen resort.

marinduque tour package 2022

  • You can also charter a private boat for P1,500 (good for 10-20 pax) to take you island hopping and fetch you the next day if you don’t catch the regular boats. It’s cheaper to hire a boat from Buyabod Port rather than hire one from Maniwaya Island.

marinduque tour package 2022

WHERE TO STAY & EAT IN MANIWAYA ISLAND:

Wawie’s Beach Resort is one of the best places to stay in Maniwaya Island. They offer spacious camping grounds for tents and have native fan rooms, open cabanas and aircon rooms. We stayed in their native fan room hut good for 2 pax, which cost P1200. We just walked in without any reservations (stayed on a Friday night) and got a room and practically the whole beach to ourselves. But if you’re traveling on a long weekend, holiday or during Holy Week, make sure to reserve rooms beforehand. I heard they can get fully booked during those times.

marinduque tour package 2022

Electricity only runs from 3:00 pm to midnight in Maniwaya Island, so be sure to charge your gadgets before that time. The resort has a generator, but if there are only a few guests, they don’t turn it on because it’s very expensive, so just opt for the non-AC rooms or tent. There are public shared restrooms outside.

marinduque tour package 2022

  • P500 – tent rental 3-4pax (per night)
  • P300 – tent pitching fee if you have your own tent (per night)
  • P1200 – native room good for 2 pax
  • P1500 – native room good for 4-5pax
  • P3500 – AC room good for 6 pax with own CR.
  • P500 – day tour open cottage (per day) good for 10pax
  • P1000 – cabana (day tour only) good for 6pax
  • P2000 – cabana (day tour plus overnyt) good for 6pax
  • P150 – Hammock (bring your own)

marinduque tour package 2022

You can also order food at Wawie’s Beach Resort, but you have to inform staff of meals required beforehand because food supplies on the island are very limited especially during low season and need to be brought in from the mainland. Meals cost P100 for breakfast and P180/for lunch and dinner. You can also bring food supplies and fresh seafood to have it cooked or cook it yourself. Red Horse Beer costs P100 per 1L bottle.

NOTE: Wawie’s Beach Resort offers hassle-free tour packages for 2D/1N with island hopping and 5 meals starting at Php 2,399/head. They have their own boat that leaves to and from Maniwaya Island to Gen Luna Port in Quezon. Travel time by land from Gen. Luna to Manila is 7-8 hours.

Day 3: Boat to Santa Cruz – Santa Cruz – Mogpog – Balanacan Port (37 kms)

  • 7:00 am – Ride boat from Maniwaya back to Buyabod port
  • 8:00 am – Arrival in Buyabod Port; proceed to Santa Cruz

  • 10:00 am – Late breakfast at Santa Cruz
  • 1:00 pm – Arrival at Rizal Street intersection, ride to Balanacan Port road
  • 2:00 pm – Balanacan Port View Deck

WHERE TO EAT IN SANTA CRUZ:

We ate in Romulo’s Restaurant, a carinderia which was recommended to us,  that serves basic meals like nilaga, fried chicken, liempo and halo-halo. Rico’s Inn Restaurant in the Santa Cruz poblacion also looks like it serves good food. It’s very near the town plaza with an interesting landmark statue.

marinduque tour package 2022

NOTE: It rained on our way back to Mogpog so we weren’t able to take a lot of photos, but there are some nice scenic spots along the way. We encountered a group of friendly local bikers on the way back. The downhill going back is just great and really long! That stretch is one of the most challenging if you’re going clockwise.

Day 3: Ferry to Lucena + Bus to Cubao

  • 2:30 pm – Ride RoRo to Lucena
  • 5:00 pm – Arrival in Lucena
  • 5:30 pm – Ride bus from Lucena to Manila
  • 10:00 pm – Arrival in Kamias (QC).
  • 10:30 pm – Home sweet home. End of tour.

What to Bring

The whole island is paved and is suitable for mountain, road bikes and folding bikes. Since you’re carrying everything while biking, it’s best to pack light. I’m not sure if mountain bike rentals are available on the island itself, but we spotted lots of bike shops for repairs and parts. We borrowed some bikepacking bags from hardcore biker Dru Kalakas of MTBikeViews . It’s very useful to have a handlebar bag, which I used to carry clothes in a dry bag. I also brought a hydration bag with snacks, a raincoat, spare bike parts, tools etc.

marinduque tour package 2022

The bulk of our gear was the photo and video equipment. We did not bring an SLR for this trip and just relied on our smart phone cams but the drone, GoPro, accessories and all the chargers and spare batteries already made up one whole backpack. It can be pretty tiring carrying a backpack while biking the whole time. It’s much better if you can securely mount stuff on the bike instead. We really need to invest in proper bikepacking gear soon.

marinduque tour package 2022

You can bring tents if you plan to camp, but you don’t have to since it will be additional weight. There are a lot of secure beach resorts and camping areas you can stay overnight, some of which offer tent rentals. You can buy food, water and supplies or just eat in the eateries in the different towns there. I suggest you bring a water bottle and refill it every time you stop for a meal to reduce plastic wastage. Bring enough cash, especially small bills.

Biking Options (Choose your own adventure)

Should you ride the island clockwise or counter-clockwise?

  • Counter-clockwise: Easier and more relaxing route with gradual uphills and rewarding downhills. You get the bulk of the distance over with on the first day and have more time for R & R on the last 2 days. Better for beginners.
  • Clockwise route : More challenging because of the longer uphills and steeper elevation. Recommended for advanced riders.

How many days do you need for the trip?

Depending on how long your biking visa is your options include:

  • 3 Day biking trip  – If you want a relaxed introduction to bikepacking, I suggest you allot 3D/2N for the tour taking into account the travel time from Manila and bus/boat schedules. Go counter clockwise and you can stay in Poctoy White Beach in Torrijos the first night and then Maniwaya Island the second night. (Day 1: 83 kms, Day 2: 27 kms, Day 3: 34 kms)
  • 2 Day biking trip  – If you only have a weekend to spare, it’s still possible to do a 2D/1N bike tour, but you will have to skip Maniwaya Island. You can go either clockwise or counter-clockwise and then stay in Poctoy White Beach in Torrijos overnight (about 60-80 kms a day)
  • 1 Day biking trip  – For hardcore bikers who don’t care about sightseeing, relaxing at the beach, and stopping to take photos at every overlooking view point and random rice field like me, it’s possible to loop the whole island in a day. You can also get extra miles by opting to pass Luzon Datum.

marinduque tour package 2022

Cross-country or coastal road at Buenavista?

  • Cross-country: The Boac-Gasan-Torrijos road cutting through mountains is shorter in terms of distance but has a steeper elevation and can be very challenging for bikers. Locals say this route doesn’t offer “much to see” in terms of scenery and has some pretty steep ascents. This is also where most cars and vans pass, so you will have to contend with more vehicles on the road.
  • Coastal road: The Buenvasita-Lipata-Dampulan-Tigwi road is longer but offers more scenic rewarding views. From here, you can see Bellaroca (Elephant Island) up close and you will have the roads all to yourself. This is a beautifully lonely and scenic road with views of mountains and the sea. Riding through here was one of the highlights of the ride for me.

UPDATE: Extra challenge: Luzon Datum of 1911

As of April 2019, the road leading up to Luzon Datum of 1911, the geodetic center of the Philippines is now completely paved and is now accessible to all forms of vehicles including bicycles. Prepare for a challenging ascent.

marinduque tour package 2022

From the jump-off point where people usually start climbing the 468-concrete steps to get to the marker, there’s a paved road extension (to drop off passengers who can’t walk up) so you can actually bring your bikes all the way up through the back! 🙂 The road extension can be seen behind the grotto.

marinduque tour package 2022

Budget & Total Expenses (for 2)

P456 (228 x 2) = Bus fare (we weren’t charged for bikes) P520 (260 x 2) = Ferry fare P60 (30 x 2) = Dalahican Terminal fee P180 = Breakfast for 2 at Kusina sa Plaza P250 = Lunch & drinks for 2 at Curba Grill P635  = Dinner for 2 (shrimps) + beer, water, etc. P1500 = AC room for 2 at Rendezvous Beach Inn

P235 = Breakfast, coffee, drinks at Rendezvous Bar P140 (70 x 2 ) = Passenger boat to Maniwaya P100 (50 x 2) = bike cargo fee P180 = Lunch at Wawie’s P1200 = Fan room for 2 on the beach P180 = Dinner at Wawie’s P200 = 2 litros of Red Horse Beer

P140 (70 x 2) = Passenger boat to Maniwaya P60 (30 x 2) = bike cargo fee P180 = lunch at Romulo’s Restaurant

P520 (260 x 2) = Ferry P44 (22 x 2) = Balanacan Terminal fee P560 (280 x 2) = Bus P100 (P50 x 2) = Bike cargo fee

============ TOTAL: P7,440 (or P3,720 per person)

BUDGET: You can cut down your expenses if you camp out in a tent or find cheaper rooms instead of staying in a resort, eat in carinderias instead of the nicer restaurants and if you don’t drink beer. Refill your water bottles when you eat in restaurants so you don’t have to keep buying bottled water. For a 3D/2N trip, I think a budget of P3,500 per person will be enough.

Travel tips & Useful info

  • Don’t expect the ferry and bus schedules to be strictly followed. Delays can be expected depending on the traffic, weather conditions, waves, season and many other factors. Adjust your IT to fit the time you have.
  • Bring a jacket or cloth and inflatable pillow for the bus and Roro. It can get cold and the pillow will allow you to get a more relaxed sleeping position.
  • We traveled during low season on a weekday and didn’t have any reservations anywhere. We just asked around for recommendations and walked in. It’s different if you’re planning to go on Holy Week, long weekends and holidays.
  • It can get hot in Marinduque during summer months starting February.
  • The weather was very pleasant during our visit in January. December to Feb before Holy Week is a good time to visit since it’s not so crowded.
  • The food supply on Maniwaya Island is limited if you go during lean season. Boat trips are only 1x a day and resorts here only stock or buy fresh food for cooking from the market if they have sure guests. It’s better if you bring our own food supply for cooking.

Hi Kara, In Marinduque you can find the midpoint marker of the Philippines or the Datum Station Marker. It is a boulder of a rock marker located in the mountain top of what is locally called Mataas na Bundok near Balanacan harbor was apparently still intact. It is located where the boarders of Brgy. Silangan, Brgy. Argao and Brgy. Hinanggayon nearly meet. A hole appeared to have been drilled in a cubic meter of diorite rock marker, accompanied by a boulder of another rock some 10 feet away that as a reference marker.

You can try to visit it. I was able to see it and the view is breath taking.

Hi Rogel, thanks for the info. Some local bikers also recommended we visit Luzon Datum. It sounds really fascinating. But we got back to the Balanacan Port just in time for the ferry back to Manila. Maybe we can visit the spot next time 🙂 But I heard the road going up there is really challenging to get to by bike.

Yes Kara the road there is going to Barangay Hinanggayon in Mogpog is very challenging because of the bumpy and rough roads, when you reach Barangay Hinanggayon I advise you to go their Barangay Hall to register because all visitors are required to log-in. From there you can either trek going to the top the datum or you can bike it until you reach the concrete steps going to Luzon Datum. From there you can carry your bike for about 15 to 20 minutes until you reach Luzon Datum. It was very tiring trek but its worth it when you go there.

Hi Kara hope you can visit this place in the future since you reach Batanes and Tawi Tawi it is very interesting that you also reach the center of the Philippines. From the top you can see what is considered as Marinduque’s version of Sleeping Dinosaur. Hope I can read your experience in trekking this famous landmark in the future. Happy trekking. God bless.

Thanks for the comment, Rogel! I hope I can visit again 🙂

Ang maganda sa Marinduque yung mga tao mababait and they are willing to help you specially pag naliligaw ka. Then nag oofer din sila ng bahay nila kung sakali wala kang matulugan.

Hi! Can I ask for your permission to allow me to add/post your link in my blog (project in school) for the information on how to reach Marinduque? Because your blog has a detailed information on how a tourist can go to Marinduque. I’ll be waiting for your reply. Thank you so much 🙂 🙂

Hello. It’s ok for you to link back to my post, but don’t repost or copy this whole article in another blog to avoid duplication on Google. Thanks and good luck with your school project.

Adik din ako sa bike and Marinduque is one of goals before getting married. Yesssss…. kasi for sure mahihirapan akong gawin yun since my fiancee is based outside the Philippines and there is a possibility na I might join her soon after we marry. I really wanna do the Marinduque loop though. Is it safe if I ride solo? Kaya ko naman mag troubleshoot pero ang main concern ko lang is my security. (baka mawalan bigla ng mapapangasawa yung gf ko). hehe. Safe pa rin ba mag bike kahit sobrang gabi na? Thanks. God bless you

Hi Jhun, from my experience it felt very safe in Marinduque and I wouldn’t be afraid to go back there as a solo traveler. I know other people have tried biking this solo as well. Locals are very friendly there. Ginabi din kami sa daan pero ok lang, walang problema. Mas delikado pa mag bike sa Manila sa totoo lang. 🙂

Ohhh. Yeah, delikado nga sa Manila mag solo ride. hehe. I am planning to do a day tour. I am thinking over it if I can circumnavigate the island in less than 15 hrs. As much as possible sana, gusto kong makabalik agad sa Manila. Maraming dapat gawin eh. hehe

Hi Jhun, it’s possible to do a day tour, but may ibang factors to consider including the schedule of the ferries and buses, etc. Here’s an account by my friend Lakwatsero who biked around the island in 18 hours.

Hi again Kara. I PM’d an FB page of a bike community in Marinduque and they said that riders who are accustomed to the island can even circumnavigate it in 5 hrs. Para daw matapos ko ang island on a day tour, mag start ako early morning, like during the break of dawn and it will be safe for me to catch the last ferry trip going back to Dalahican at 7:30 PM.

Very informative! Bucket list for bike packing.

You’re welcome Ton. Hope you enjoy your bikepacking trip there 🙂

Well, if you’re not after sightseeing and purely biking lang talaga kaya naman siguro. Namasyal pa kasi kami at nag island hopping pa kasi. Enjoy!

Great post! Now I’m torn between what to do first – bike around Marinduque or Romblon. I can only do one this year ? Your blog is very informative and helpful. Thank you!

Hi Michelle. Thanks for the comment. How much time do you have to spare? If you’re a fast biker, you could probably cover both destinations in one trip. Both are fairly small islands and there’s a way to cross from Marinduque to Romblon by sea. Check this link out. 🙂

  • Pingback: 10 Great Biking Destinations in Luzon | Travel Up

your blog is a really nice guide to the island. great work! 🙂 we plan to go there next week. did you happen to see a motorcycle/bike rental near the port? we want to go around with a motorcycle for a 2D/1N trip. Thank you very much.

Hi Sandy, when we went there earlier this year, there were no official motorcycle or bike rentals near the port, though I did see a bicycle shop called Mile’s Bike s on the way to town. They are currently only selling bikes, but they said they’re planning to rent out bicycles soon. Probably not in time for your visit next week though. I asked around in some vulcanizing shops about motorcycle rentals, and it’s not common because demand is still low. They don’t get a lot of tourists compared to other places. Usually, what we do is just talk to locals to ask around if they know anyone willing to lend their bikes for a fee.

Thanks for posting this. It’s all the info that I need.

We will be biking there on Nov.2, my bday ride =), until Nov.4.

Very excited na!

Thank you so much!!!

You’re welcome, Jun. Hope you enjoy your birthday biking trip to Marinduque!

Maraming salamat sa pagmamahal nyo sa Marinduque. Wag kayong mag alala kunng mag ride kayo. Masasabi ko lang na talagang safe dyan magride. tsaka marami pang magagandang tannawin kayong masisilayan near roads. tsaka presko sariwang hanginn malalanghap while riding. Bale may kakilala ding akong marerecomend sa inyo na Biking is life din! isa syang Instructor sa Marinduque State Coollege (MSC) pm nyo lang sya baka sakaling makasama nyo sya sa Pagrarides nyo. Hi Kenneth. Salamat sa info! Would you know any place that rents out mountain bikes in Marinduque for people na gustong mag-bike pagdating na dun at walang sariling bikes? May mga inquiries din kasi akong natatanggap. Yung iba kasing foreign backpackers, syempre wala silang bikes at gusto lang mag-rent. Any information on bike rentals or tours would be helpful. Thank you! Ganda po sa Marinduque. Sana makabalik pa ako at makita din yung Luzon Datum.

Hi Rogel. I just got back from a trip to Marinduque and was able to visit the Luzon Datum of 1911 midpoint. You’re right. The view from up there is really beautiful and the fact that you’re stepping foot in the very center of the Philippines makes the trip worth it. As of April 2019, the tourism road going up has been paved and cyclists can now bike all the way up! I updated this post to include that new information.

How did you pack your bike to ride in the bus? Did you disassembled it? I will doing Marinduque loop next week and deciding if what bike to bring, MTB or folding, I am lwaning towards folding bike for mobility because I will be taking a bus. TIA.

We just took out the front wheels to fit in the storage compartment of the bus. It’s pretty big, so it can easily fit in two whole bikes. But you may have to disassemble it if there are a lot of passengers with lots of bags. You can also bring a folding bike if you prefer, but there are some steep sections that might be more challenging on a folding bike compared to MTB.

Hello Kara, thank you very much for this very comprehensive post on Marinduque. I plan to go to Marinduque this October, and my preference for going around is to “backride”. By any chance do you know someone (a tour guide?) in Marinduque who offers this service? Thank you in advance, Kara.

Hi Boyet. The only accredited travel agency I know that offers tours around Marinduque is Dream Favor Travel and Tours. 21 Santol, Boac, Marinduque. Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/DreamFavor . Email: [email protected] . Contact: 0918 933 1605. They offer van & boat tours, but they might be able to help you find a tour guide who can take you around on a motorcycle. Or you could probably just talk to someone at the port when you get down to inquire if anyone does habal-habal tours and offer to pay them for the day. Hope that helps.

We are a family of three, and plan tobring our car to Marinduque. Our itinerary is first to go to Maniwaya Island then be back intime for Good Friday. I would like to ask, since its our first time going there. Is there a parking for cars at Barangay Sta. Cruz, Buyabod Port?

Thank you in advance! 🙂

Hello. Yes, there’s a parking area for cars in Buyabod Port. I’m not sure what the fee is for overnight parking but it should be minimal. 🙂

Maniwaya Island is one of the province of Marinduque’s unknown gems hidden in the shadows. It takes less than an hour to arrive on the main island by boat. Along with the white sand beaches of the island, there are also a variety of resorts where you can relax.

marinduque tour package 2022

My Maniwaya Island trip, like any other ideal trip, is a tropical dream, where you can wallow in the white sand with your friends while sipping fresh buko juice, listening to great tunes, and basically enjoying it out with friends and family.

So, if you’re planning a DIY vacation to Maniwaya Island soon, here’s a Maniwaya Island travel guide to assist you in making your plans.

Table of Contents

Prepping for Maniwaya Island Tour

Best time to travel to maniwaya island.

The greatest time to visit Maniwaya Island, or any beach for that matter, is between January and early June, in my experience. It’s that time of year when the sun shines brightly and you may enjoy the cool waters of the beaches. If at all possible, avoid weekends and holidays, when beaches tend to become overcrowded.

Where to stay in Maniwaya Island

Budget beach resorts, tents, and camping sites abound on Maniwaya Island. Here’s a list of beach resorts to consider

marinduque tour package 2022

These are just some of the beach resorts you can find within Maniwaya Island. You can always check out this link to find out the accommodations available for your stay at Maniwaya.

Manila to Maniwaya Island

Option 1: by bus, van, boat via general luna port.

If you plan to commute to Maniwaya Island, I suggest taking a bus going from Manila to Lucena Grand terminal to General Luna Port.  Where travel time is roughly about 6 hours.

Manila to Lucena Grand Terminal

Manila to Lucena Grand terminal takes about 2-3 hours, and the total bus fare is approximately Php 270 ($5.17). You can check out bus companies and their travel schedules here:

  • JAM Transit
  • Lucena Liner

Lucena Grand Terminal to General Luna Port

Upon arrival at the Lucena grand terminal, you’ll find Van terminals there that offer a ride to General Luna. Van fare is roughly about PHp 170 ( $3.26) and travel time is approximately 2 hours.

General Luna Port to Maniwaya Island

Once you’re at General Luna port, you’ll find a boat that takes you to Maniwaya Island. Unfortunately there’s only 1 public boat going to Maniwaya Island and it leaves at 10:00 AM daily. The boat fare is about Php 150 ($2.87) and travel time is roughly an hour.

If you plan to do this DIY I suggest, you plan ahead and take into consideration the schedules from Bus travel time to Boat travel time. Just so you could save some money.

marinduque tour package 2022

Alternatively, if you’re not able to catch the 10 AM boat ride, you can still rent a private small boat going to Maniwaya Island. Prices depend on the size of the boat where small ones (good for 4 persons) are priced at Php 1,500 ($29) and larger ones (good for 8 persons) cost around Php 3,000 ($57.47).

Option 2: By Van rental or tour packages

Alternatively, if you don’t have the luxury of time to DIY plan for the trip you can always check out available tour packages online.

For this trip, my friends and I decided to join a tour package from El Biyahera Travels and Tours  It’s a 2D1N tour, where we traveled around January of last year. Here’s the itinerary and tour package we have for that trip:

marinduque tour package 2022

I believe that this is a good deal, apart from the fact that my friend and I decided to rent a Nippa hut ( Kubo) rather than a tent just so we could sleep better. To add, this tour also included snacks and food we can eat during the trip which is a great deal for us for the price of Php 2599 ($ 53. 47).

A little bit about Maniway a Island

Apart from its beautiful and refreshing seas and spectacular landscape, the first thing you should know about Maniwaya Island is that it lacks a reliable mobile signal, so selfies and stories may need to be paused while you’re there.

marinduque tour package 2022

Moreover, because there are no ATMs on the island, you’ll need to stock up on cash. And because all transactions on the island are done in cash, I recommend finding ATMs before taking a boat to Maniwaya.

My Maniwaya Island Trip Itinerary

Island hopping and snorkeling.

A weekend getaway, in my opinion, isn’t complete without island hopping! Snorkeling is our first activity when we arrive at the island. The snorkeling area doesn’t necessarily have a name, it’s merely a random area where guests who request snorkeling are taken by the boat guides. This is a beautiful spot with numerous corals, most of which are hard corals.

Palad Sandbar

Palad Sandbar is a 30-minute boat ride from Maniwaya Island, this is probably the most popular sandbar in the province and I tell you it’s famous for that reason!

marinduque tour package 2022

It’s a comparatively smaller sandbar than other known sandbars but nonetheless, if you are able to find a good spot to take some photos and just bask in the sand with your friends, there is no doubt that you’ll want to visit this place again!

marinduque tour package 2022

Ungab Rock Formation

Ungab Formation is another stunning and magnificent tourist destination in Marinduque. The formation is found in Mongpong Island which is a 30 minute ride from Maniwaya Island.

marinduque tour package 2022

It’s called Ungab because the rock formation is located on the Eastern part of the island called Sitio Ungab.

marinduque tour package 2022

When you try to look at the rock formation in a closer perspective you’ll find a wide opening between the rocks which is a good shade spot to get away from the scorching heat. Ungab formation is definitely a must-see location specially for those tourists who enjoy rock climbing.

Maniwaya Travel Tips and Reminders

Here are some reminders you’ll need to keep in mind while you’re at the island.

  • Meals are available in Maniwaya Island
  • Always be cautious of your actions and respect the wildlife within the islands you’re visiting, do not kick corals and seashells or other water creatures you’ll find on the island as souvenirs.
  • Dispose of your trash properly , you arrive at Maniwaya Island clean, leave no trace of trash that might endanger the wildlife.

Tips for Solo travelers and DIY travelers

  • If you’re a solo traveler, ask the boat operator or beach resort staff if you can join group tours to save money
  • Always check availability of and schedules of buses and vans if you’re planning to commute, they are most likely to change so it’s important to have a back-up plan
  • Plan ahead! I can’t stress this enough, if you plan to do a DIY trip it’s good practice to check the prices and schedules so you won’t be short on time.

Since we are still in a state of a pandemic, I suggest you pick a date where there are not many tourists so you can really enjoy your getaway!

ROMBLON 4-DAY ITINERARY: Guide, Budget & Everything Else You Need To Know

Ever experienced living behind the shadows? Like you have this super famous sister or a best friend perhaps that people so adore they keep talking how beautiful, smart and talented she is and you can’t help but take a backseat. That no matter how you resemble those qualities, people won’t seem to notice. It’s like there’s an invisible wall, so big, it forbids you to shine. Yeah, it sucks. It must have really suck and that probably how Romblon felt about being behind the shadow of Boracay for a very long time.

Romblon is one of the  rarely explored provinces of the Philippines. While it is just 45 minutes of boat ride away from the world famous island, Boracay , it doesn’t seem to share a bit of the limelight. Few have ventured into these parts of our country which makes it bittersweet. While I love destinations which are off the tourists’ radar, I also believe that people has to see how beautiful the world is. Romblon is no exception.

They say people tends to destroy beautiful things that some travelers choose to rather keep unknown places to themselves. But I say, let these places teach us a thing or two. Let it move us and make us stewards of their preservation. A secret can’t last forever. I definitely can’t keep Romblon a secret no matter how much I want to. It deserves more. More eyes to adore it. More lips to tell wonderful stories about it. More minds to keep thinking about it and hearts to love it so deeply they can’t bear to see it ruined. Romblon is such a beauty and is simply one of the best that it just can’t stay hidden in the shadows far too long.

OUR 4-DAY ROMBLON ITINERARY

Our 4-Day Romblon Itinerary is not the most ideal at all since we just worked around what our limited time could afford us taking into consideration the holiday rush, transportation, and price. We went there during the Holy Week as we wanted to escape the holiday crowd and we all know how traveling during the holidays could easily become a nightmare. And as much as we wanted to keep everything cheap, it didn’t which is what we expected of our traditional Holy Week Escape. The previous year was epic in the Babuyan Islands and this year, we wanted to take the fun a notch higher in Romblon. Since flying to Romblon was not an option (expensive and no flights on our travel date), we took Batangas Port as our gateway and Caticlan our jump-off point. So, allow me to share how it all went down.

Day 1 – The Breathtaking Carabao Island

Carabao Island is said to be the twin sister of Boracay. This island haunted me for years because personally, who wouldn’t wanna know if some island out there has the same powdery white sand as Boracay. Although Calaguas Island came really close, Boracay however (in my opinion) is still in a whole different level. So I thought they wouldn’t call it its twin sister for nothing and I just couldn’t pass at the chance to see it. Since we were going to Romblon, there was no way Carabao Isla nd is off the itinerary. Hence, this was where we were on our first day.

My first impression of Carabao Island upon seeing it was “Wow!” When my foot touched its sand upon disembarking, I couldn’t believe how it seemed to have the same sands as Boracay. It truly is its twin sister but cuter and with more innocence. It’s untouched and raw packed with all the tropical goodness from towering palm trees along the shoreline to the caves and stunning cliff diving spots. Although I still think the sun sets more beautifully in Boracay but Carabao Island definitely did not disappoint.

  • Touring Carabao Island is done best with a motorcycle. Either you rent one or hire a habal-habal to drive you around. Habal-habal normally costs P500 for one whole day of tour but this price could go up during holidays.
  • Make sure to reserve your accommodation in advance especially if you are going here on weekends or on holidays.
  • If your entry point is in Caticlan, go to Tabon Baybay Port early as there could be limited trips and boats fill up pretty quickly.
  • If you are in Tablas, entry point is Sta. Fe Port which is a 2-hour jeepney ride away from Odiongan.
  • If you are headed to Tablas Island by the end of the day, last passenger boat to Sta. Fe leaves at 4PM. No trips during holidays and you may need to charter a boat for P3000.
  • Make sure to bring enough cash before going to the island as there are no ATMs available there.

Where To Stay In Carabao Island:

Day 2 – Exploring Bonbon Beach, Cobrador & Alad Islands

Our first day spent in Carabao Island was such a blast. But as much as we wanna stay for one more day, there is so much more to see in Romblon. Hence early the following morning, we got ourselves on a boat going to Santa Fe in Tablas Island. We were en route Romblon Island, the province’s marble capital as we heard, it’s home to a gorgeous beach and surrounded by stunning islands. The journey going there was no joke as people were trying to rip us off from our boat ride to Santa Fe to our ride going to San Agustin. Things lighten up a bit when we got our ferryboat ride to Romblon Island cheap at P2000. Imagine a boat that could load up 50-60 passengers paying P100 each agreed to such a bargain. Beat that!

We went straight to island hopping upon reaching Romblon Island. The passenger boat owner was also gracious to arrange for us our island hopping boat for P1500. We headed first to Cobrador Island where we got to see amazing rock formations, fine sugary white sand beach, crystal clear waters, and a stretch of palm trees. We headed to Alad Island next since the other island we were supposed to visit could not be accessed due to rough seas and for the same reason, we were not able to try those several cliff diving spots. We capped off the day with a beautiful sunset in Bonbon Beach, which beauty and charm compensated enough for all the stress we went through that day.

  • If you are traveling here on a non-working holiday or during the Holy Week, expect that nothing comes cheap. Regular public transpo is limited to non-existent.
  • Reserve your accommodation beforehand if you are traveling during peak season or during the holidays.

Where To Stay In Tablas & Romblon Islands:

Day 3&4 – The Enchanting Cresta De Gallo

My friends and I are big fans of all things virgin. Not that there’s the slightest spec of virginity in us (LOL) but we got this certain fascination about untouched and remote places. There’s something about their pureness and rawness that we find impeccable and riveting each time. Cresta De Gallo embodies such pureness that we could not bare missing the chance to explore it during this trip. Our third and last day was spent unraveling the mystic of this island and we absolutely loved it!

Going here was no easy peasy. We even faced the possibility of our voyage to Sibuyan Island being canceled. Restless from island hopping the day before but at 6AM, we already got our asses in Romblon Port just to not miss our trip. Sadly, due to the lack of passengers, the RoRo did not leave until 8AM. We arrived in Sibuyan Island after 2 hours and quickly got into the bumpiest jeepney ride of our lives from Magdiwang to San Fernando. At 2PM that day, our eyes were already feasting on cerulean waters and the endless strip of fine white sands. Cresta De Gallo was a paradise and our Holy Week Escapade couldn’t have been better anywhere else.

  • Prepare for a bumpy jeepney ride from Magdiwang to San Fernando. Not sure about the roads now but during our visit, it was unpaved and rugged which made the ride worse than a turbulent airplane.
  • There is no standard rates for boats going to Cresta De Gallo so you are best to shop around until you find the best deal.
  • If you are going overnight in Cresta De Gallo , make sure to discuss clearly with the boat operator the hours as to when you are going back to San Fernando the next day to avoid confusion and to set the price right. Some of them take overnight literally. Like staying on the island for the night and going back to the mainland at 6AM the following day.
  • There are no ATMs in Sibuyan (at least during our visit) but you can withdraw money from pawnshops and remittance centers using your atm/debit cards.
  • Trips going back to Magdiwang from San Fernando are only available from 5AM – 9AM.

Where To Stay In Sibuyan Island Other Than Camping Out In Cresta De Gallo :

WAYS TO GET TO ROMBLON

There are three major jump off points in going to Romblon which are Tablas, Romblon and Sibuyan Islands. Modes of transportation also varies which depends on your point of origin and chosen destination but sea travel is definitely the most common and has a variety of options.

From Manila – You can fly directly to Romblon. Cebu Pacific flies three times weekly to Tablas Island from Manila. If this isn’t an option for you, you can ride a bus to Batangas Port and hop on any of the ferries enroute Romblon.

From Batangas Port – There are several shipping lines plying the waters to Romblon from Batangas Port that trips are available everyday. Fares range from P800-P1500. Please refer to the table below for the schedules.

From Lucena   Port – Starhorse Shipping Lines has trips to Sibuyan Island every Tuesdays and Saturdays which depart at 2AM and arrive at 8PM. Trips from Sibuyan Island to Lucena Port are on Mondays and Fridays at 8AM. Fare is P500.

From Marinduque – In Cawit, Boac Marinduque, Starhorse Shipping Lines stops by at 6AM every Tuesdays and Saturdays enroute San Agustin, Romblon Island and Sibuyan.

From Caticlan – 2GO has daily trip going to Odiongan Port at 8AM. You can also slowly make your way up by taking the passenger outrigger boat in Tabon Baybay Port in Caticlan going to Carabao Island at 7AM.

From Capiz – 2GO has trips from Roxas City to Romblon Island on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 2PM.

GOOD TO KNOW

Transportation – UV Express and jeepneys are the main mode of transpo connecting major towns in bigger islands like Tablas and Sibuyan. Getting around small islands can be done using a motorcycle or habal-habal. RoRo are available daily for interisland transfers but you just got to be mindful of the schedule. During non-working holidays such as the Holy Week, public transportation may not be available.

Food – There are a variety of choices in every island from local eateries serving home cooked Filipino dishes at P50 a meal to restaurants offering a fusion of different cuisines for P250 a plate. Group meal package is also offered by some eateries for an affordable price. Sadly, fast food restaurants like Jollibee are only available in Odiongan, Tablas Island.

Prices – Romblon is on the affordable side when it comes to exploring major spots, food, transportation and accommodation but things can get quite the opposite during holidays and peak season.

Accommodation – Places to stay at in Romblon range from hotels to beach resorts, small inns and homestays which are pretty affordable. Some resorts and/or islands also allow pitching of tents at the beach for a minimal fee.

The Islands – Romblon has three major islands namely Tablas, Romblon and Sibuyan Islands. We opted not to include Tablas Island in our itinerary as we really wanted to see Cresta De Gallo and a day in Tablas might tamper our plans. Tablas is just too big of an island that we might as well spend all our 4 days there.

The small islands surrounding Romblon are inhabited. Most of which are fishing villages but a good part of each of the islands have long stretch of pristine beaches. The sands are sugary fine with rough coral stones in the mix. Cresta De Gallo Island on the other hand is completely remote with little to no signs of human settlement.

Banks & ATMs – Banks and ATMs (Automated Teller Machine) are limited only to Odiongan and other towns in Tablas Island and Romblon Island. Sibuyan Island doesn’t have an ATM (at least during our visit) and withdrawals are normally done in remittance centers such as Cebuana Lhuiller and Palawan Pawnshop. To make sure your expenses are covered during your stay, bring enough cash.

Connectivity – Mobile data is pretty stable in all three major islands of Romblon for both Globe and Smart users with the exception of some highly remote areas where connection is intermittent.
