Below deck with the cruise ship workers of TikTok

People can’t get enough of their “day in the life” at sea videos.

Back in 2017, Bryan James went from being a cruise ship passenger to a cruise ship worker.

The 34-year-old musician from San Francisco was on a cruise with friends and heard a solo guitarist performing on one of the decks. “It clicked,” he says. “This is a job, a real thing people do.”

After the performance, James spoke to the guitarist, who gave him advice on how to get a job — as well as a connection to her agent. He recalls the guitarist telling him, “This is the best job I’ve ever had.”

Today, James feels similarly. Even though he’s at the five-year mark in his career at sea — the point at which most musicians on cruises decide to move on — James wants to work for way longer. “I’m really enjoying it,” says James, who is employed by Royal Caribbean. “I think I’m going to stick around for a while.”

But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing for James. As the pandemic wracked the world, the cruise industry shut up shop. “During COVID, every single cruise ship job disappeared,” says James. “We all went home, and what did we do with our time? We all jumped on TikTok.” On his For You Page, James was served lots of “day in the life” worker content. He was particularly enthralled by flight attendant TikTok.

Such videos inspired him. “There’s so much of cruise ship life that people don’t know because it’s behind the scenes,” he says. “I told myself, ‘When I get back on a ship, I want to start making TikToks.’” His @bryanjames.music account now has 635,000 followers who watch his videos for his narrated looks at cruise ship life. One of his most popular videos, which has been seen 4.6 million times, explains what crew members do on their rare shore days, when they’re allowed off the ship to relax.

Ann Knypl, a 32-year-old who works for Celebrity Cruises, is another cruise ship TikToker. Her family, based in the Philippines, had plenty of experience working on cruise ships; her mom was a state room attendant for 15 years, and her brother works at sea, too. At the age of 24, she decided to follow in their footsteps. Like many ship workers, she began in the housekeeping department, cleaning cabins. She moved up the career ladder, ending up as a marketing communications manager.

The pandemic put her career on hold for a year. When the industry decided to welcome back passengers, she had to fly to Miami and undergo a two-week quarantine to ensure she was COVID-free. “Being in a Miami hotel for two weeks is, like, boredom,” she says. “You can’t do anything.” So she picked up TikTok.

The two-week quarantine period unexpectedly turned into four weeks. Knypl began posting on TikTok, gaining 10,000 followers by sharing videos of life before getting on board. People began peppering her with questions, and the comments signaled to the algorithm that her content was well-engaged with. Today 430,000 people follow her on @_super_ann account , where she taps into various TikTok trends . She says she’s not sure whether Celebrity Cruises knows about her exploits on the platform.

Another cruise ship worker, @cruisecamera , who navigates ships as a first officer for Royal Caribbean, has 34,000 followers. @cruisecamera, who requested that Input not use his real name, joined TikTok under much the same circumstances as James and Knypl.

“I was bored when cruising stopped,” he says. “I was still onboard but without guests and I wanted to do something,” he continues. (It was during this time that a number of cruise ship TikTokers went viral for posting content from abandoned ships that would ordinarily be packed with guests.) A colleague told him a fellow cruise worker had gained some level of popularity on TikTok; he checked out their feed and decided to do the same.

“I just filmed whatever I was doing at work that I felt was okay to film,” he says. @cruisecamera tries to show only the positive side of cruising, and he doesn’t share too much from restricted areas of the vessel. Most of @cruisecamera’s videos come from behind the steering wheel, and show how the enormous ship manages to navigate into and out of port.

But the account holder also gives glimpses into other areas: One of his most popular videos, viewed nearly 14 million times, shows a crew member going down a claustrophobic chute as part of evacuation practice procedures.

Occasionally, cruise ship TikTokers will run afoul of their employers. Like when James posted a video about the choppy conditions at sea. “I was talking about how ships rock on the sea, and I talked about these barf bags I saw them put out,” he says. The video went super-viral.

Royal Caribbean told him that they were glad the video was a success, but less glad that it was highlighting the sickness issues some experience on cruises. James ended up taking the clip down.

Costly internet

More of an issue than intrusive employers is the tech onboard ships. “Internet on a cruise ship is very expensive,” says Knypl. She pays 20 cents a minute for access, which isn’t always that reliable. “I have to aim not to use the internet that much.”

James echoes Knypl’s sentiments. “If there’s one pain point for all crew members, it’s that every single cruise line on the planet charges to use the internet,” says James. “And on top of that, it’s really, really, hilariously slow.” James says that situation makes it difficult for him to build a connection with his audience. “It costs, so everything’s rapid-fire,” he says. “I try to make comments as fast as possible. It’s difficult.” Yet people keep watching, and engaging with, cruise ship TikTokers.

Cruise ship TikToker Ann Knypl

Why they do so is another question. “I can understand why it’s popular with people that like to cruise,” says James. “I get that. But it’s much more popular than just with people who cruise.”

James pauses for a second. “Man, what is the secret to it? I don’t know.” He’d like to think it’s his laid-back personality and his ability to make what he does look interesting. “But I don’t know,” he admits. “As humans, we like to see behind the scenes. That’s why we watch Dirty Jobs and all those TV shows that talk about what it’s like in the kitchen or something.

“We’re intrigued by the things we’re not part of,” he continues. “And cruise ships are really, really interesting.”

Motor Yacht OHANA to Appear in ‘Below Deck’ Season 2 Reality Show

By Editorial Team   7 February 2014

Following the ratings success of the first season, Bravo TV’s ‘Below Deck’ season 2 is due to start filming this month and the charter yacht confirmed to appear is OHANA, the 47m/154’ Admiral superyacht. The production company are currently seeking charter guests to take part in the new series.

The first season of the reality show, which followed a working charter crew over the course of five-weeks in the Caribbean, featured the 50m/160’7 Benetti motor yacht ‘Cuor di Leone’ (renamed ‘Honor’ for the purposes of the charter). After filming had finished, ‘Cuor di Leone’ was sold and promptly taken off of the charter market, meaning that the ‘Below Deck’ producers had to find a suitable replacement in time for the Caribbean yacht charter season.

Popular charter yacht OHANA became a prime candidate along with her Captain John. Grugach and producers are now looking for a new crew to fill the rest of the positions on board as well as charter guests willing to be filmed for the duration of their vacation.

The 1998-built OHANA has carved out an exceptional reputation as a charter vessel over the years and is fully equipped for comfortable and exciting cruising vacations. Meticulously maintained since new, she was last refitted in 2011 and boasts a spacious, high-quality interior styled by the award-winning designer Donald Starkey . She accommodates up to 10 guests in five beautiful staterooms and features state-of-the-art audio visual equipment and Kaleidescape systems throughout.

Her outdoor areas are what truly make her stand out with every conceivable facility needed for an unforgettable vacation. This is best seen in her vast sundeck which features a large shaded double bar, Jacuzzi surrounded by sunpads, barbeque and five optional sun shade triangles in addition to a state of the art “pop-top” which rotates and opens to reveal a central, spiral staircase. OHANA’s armada of watertoys includes a 40’ waterslide which attaches to the side of the yacht, great fun for adults and kids alike.

It is still not clear whether the yacht will be called 'Honor' in second season of  Bravo's 'Below Deck' TV show.  If you can't wait until the next season airs then you can get a sneak preview of the interior photos of Ohana or watch her charter video.

If you are interested in booking a charter on board OHANA, either for the ‘Below Deck’ season 2 in the British Virgin Islands or for the summer 2014 season then contact your preferred charter broker .

How to pick a stateroom

So many choices. We provide a guide to how to get started finding the perfect stateroom.

We are one of the largest cruise ship deck plans websites in the world. We have over 241 ocean cruise ships in our database. For each ship we show the current cruise ship deck plan. We also show each cabin type (category) for that ship. Within each cabin type we provide detail diagrams (stateroom floor plans), pictures, videos, features, square footage and more. We also list the handicap cabins. We show actual ship exterior pictures and also pictures of places on the decks. We list all the main features for each ship including a listing of features NOT on that ship. This helps to make researching cruise ships so easy and so fun! We give you power at your finger tips to find the information you are looking for. It is all available from one page and usually just a click away. We hope you enjoy! The CRUISEDECKPLANS Team.

Decide what type of cabin you would like.

There are four main types (categories) of cabins: Inside cabins: These cabins are usually the lowest price. Typically they will have twin beds that convert to a queen size, a private bath with a shower, a closet for hanging clothes, a dresser and a television. These cabins do not have a window to let natural light in. To help give the occupants an impression of having a view, some inside cabins have a virtual view. That means there is a large screen that displays outside views. Expect to pay $100 to $200 a night for an inside cabin. Exception: Carnival has several cabins which are classified as inside cabins but actually have a french glass door which allows light into the room (no balcony, but the door can be opened). Carnival also has some cabins that have a window, but because the window has an obstructed view (that means there is a railing or object in the way) it is listed as an inside cabin. Royal Caribbean has some cabins that have a window but look out over an inside promenade area. These are called "promenade staterooms". Oceanview cabins: These cabins are like inside cabins but usually have a port hole or window. A window is much more desirable than a porthole because the porthole can be difficult to look through. Windows will vary in size and some cabins will even have full floor to ceiling windows. Most window sizes for oceanview cabins are about 4 feet by 3 feet. Be sure to read the cabin description carefully to determine if there is a different type of window. Windows can not be opened. Expect to pay $150 to $250 a night for an oceanview. Balcony cabins: These cabins are better, and more expensive, than oceanview cabins because they typically have full glass sliding doors that lead to a balcony. The balcony allows fresh air and light into the cabin and also may have additional chairs or loungers. Balconies tend to be separated by dividers which give some sense of privacy, but be aware that most balconies are not fully private and can be viewed from above or by the cabin next to you. Balconies on new Norwegian Cruise Line ships and Princess Cruise Line ships tend to be smaller and more narrow than balconies on other ships. We will list balcony size in the cabin description.  Carnival offers what is called a "Cove Balcony" on some of their ships. These balconies are very popular because they sit lower on the ship (closer to the water line). Expect to pay $200 to $400 a night for an balcony cabin. Suite: A suite is a premium cabin on a cruise ship. It is usually much larger than a balcony and includes more perks. Suites typically have a full bath tub, large shower, larger closets, larger balcony, larger TV, and butler services. Expect to pay $400 to over $1,000 a night for a suite.

Decide where you would like the cabin located.

Cabins are priced based on location on the ship. Typically cabins on lower decks are less expensive. Typically cabins midship (in the middle part of a deck) cost higher. Balcony and Suite cabins on the very aft of the ship can also be more expensive than other cabins. In order to set the pricing many cruise lines will divide each cabin type into sub categories. For example a balcony cabin may be divided into sub categories such as B1, B2, B3, B4. In most cases the cabin size and features in a sub category is the exactly the same. The only difference is usually the location of the cabin on the ship. Please look for the notes on the category descriptions to determine if there is a difference in size or features between the subcategories. Exception: Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines will also use sub categories to distinquish between how many occupants the cabin will sleep. Therefore a cabin that can sleep up to 4 people will be a different sub category from a cabin that sleeps only 2 people. You can also use our drag deck feature to determine if your cabin is in a good location. Cabins are best located when they are next to, above or below other cabins. As a rule of thumb avoid booking a cabin under a public area or kitchen. If you are looking for a balcony cabin, please be aware that on many ships the cabins that are below the pool deck may also be shaded by a roof overhang from the deck above. You can also use our drag deck feature to determine if there is a overhang. TIP: Many of the cruise ships are so large now and have so many floors that elevators are required to get to the public areas from your stateroom. But during peak times you could be waiting awhile to get on an elevator. If you pick a stateroom near the top or near the lower decks of the ship you may find a much better experience getting around. For example a stateroom on top of the ship gets you closer to the pool and buffet areas. A stateroom near the main public decks gets you closer to the lounges and bars. If you do need to take an elevator it is easier to find one that is empty if you are starting from the top or the bottom. You will also find the busiest elevators are the ones that go up to the buffet.

Service charge comparison

Many of the Cruise Lines charge a service fee on top of the cruise fare. Regardless of what the fee is used for, you will need to plan the following cost into the price of the cruise. The prices shown reflect the current service fee for a 7 day cruise for 2 people. (All prices subject to change)

It’s a glimpse into a luxury escape — and the drama onboard

mega yacht dining

Below Deck follows the lives of crew members who live and work onboard a mega-yacht.

Season one follows the likes of Captain Lee Rosback, First Officer Aleks Taldykin, Chief Stewardess Adriene Gang, Second Engineer C.J. LeBeau, Chef Ben Robinson and Deckhand David Bradberry in their everyday working and personal lives onboard the 164-foot Honor .

The first release of the series averaged 1.4 million total viewers per episode.

All of the crew that is hired to be part of the show are licensed and certified, which involves a two-week course.

Captain Lee says: “ Each of the crew members has to have an STCW, which is a standard set by the maritime industry for watch-keeping and just being on board—it’s basic first aid, firefighting. It’s a two-week course and a certification they have to have before they’re allowed to work on yachts.”

The crew is filmed 24 hours a day , seven days a week working on the boat while being filmed by both hidden cameras and a crew.

But what makes the show so addictive?

For reality TV lovers, Below Deck is one of those shows with a brand that is instantly bingeable. This is because of the on-screen romances, drama, and professional and personal turmoils that are captured on screen.

Noah Samton, the senior vice president of the production for Bravo says that the yachting industry “attracts the kind of people that are good for TV. First of all, they’re a lot of young, attractive people. A lot of people that are sort of escaping their lives for some reason or have this adventurous streak in them. We’re really good at finding the people who are going to wear it on their sleeves.”

And as with other reality TV shows, the cameras capture it all, sharing every aspect of their lives onboard.

The only place that they aren’t filmed is in the bathroom, but only one crew member can be in one at any given time.

Members have tried to get away with their personal antics being held in places without a camera — in one instance, a laundry room — but the crew quickly clocks on.

It’s this close look into their lives, combined with the personalities and the exotic locations, that make Below Deck so exciting to watch.

How is the show really filmed? Here are some of the secrets

blue waters serene environment

When the show was first released there were some questions from fans about how ‘real’ the working lives were of those on screen. But the cast actually work as real-life stewards, sometimes up to 16+ hours a day, and sleep on tiny bunks.

T he charter company actually pays each cast member a base salary; the cast is also paid an appearance fee by the production company. And they’re allowed to take tips by guests. All their food is provided by the boat’s chef, as would be in the case if they were regular employees.

The cast is not allowed to speak to, or interact with, the production team and cameraman in order to keep in line with the show’s guidelines.

Captain Lee is actually in charge of the boat, including when and where they can sail and anything that needs to be considered in terms of the weather. He can also fire anyone at any time. Production is not allowed to have any influence on this.

The boat costs upwards of $300,000 per week to hire — which is why all filming is done during the six-week period.

All cast members get three days off per season during the six weeks of filming on the boat. They can stay in a hotel room on those days, but they’re not allowed to communicate with each other.

There are also advantages for the guests on the boat, as they are given a fifty percent discount on their journey — although they pay their own money to rent the boat and for their tips.

What’s the future for Below Deck?

So far, Netflix has releases only two series of the show, but we can expect more. For the ones that can’t get the show’s pristine sceneries out of their mind, sites like borrowaboat.com have boats and yachts for every taste available to rent, perfect to recreate the sailing lifestyle.

While there are only two series so far released by Netflix, we can expect more. And the new Below Deck season eight will likely premiere sometime in the fall of 2020.

With eight seasons now, it’s likely that there could be more in the future and that audiences will be able to continue to enjoy the drama-filled lives of those who work below deck and onboard the ship.

Welcome to CruiseStateroom.com

Thousands of cabin pictures, interactive deck plans, learn more about us.

Founded in 2001 by Dominique Vaccaro, a passionate cruise ship and old liner enthusiast since his childhood. He was concerned that only a few web sites provided a helpful and practical search for obtaining and visualization of cruise ship deck plans and staterooms available. Those that did, usually offered very little interactivity to find the configuration and location of a stateroom. One would get lost and perhaps bored by the opening of dozens of windows searching for information.

That is why this site came into existence. To help visitors, first time or even experienced cruise customers and travel agents search and find, through an easy to use and complete interface, the stateroom that would be best for their tastes, means or requests.

  • We have over 307,052 Stateroom Photos
  • We have over 27,060 Stateroom Videos
  • We have deck plans for 242 Cruise Ships

You can find cruise ship deck plans all over the internet. But our deck plans are truly interactive. As you view them you can mouse over pictures, pop ups and category information.

Cruise Deck Plans, Ship Reviews

CruiseMapper logo

CruiseMapper's deckplan services provide cruise deck plans reviews integrated with newest deck layouts and deck legends (company's cabin categories as names and color codes). Each page has a separate link to the vessel's passenger cabins' review that provides information on all its staterooms (amenities, cabin types, grades) with usually included floor plans and photos. Here you can search for a particular ship (via the above search bar) or you can skip the introduction/explanations and go down directly to our list of large passenger ships' deckplan pages .

Along with regularly updated officially issued cruise line deck plans, CruiseMapper's deck plans pages also show statistical information on passenger shipping vessels (including ferries ). All pages are organized as "ship review" articles. You will know what is what, where (location on deck), serving what (functions), operates how and when (review of all onboard venues as activities, amenities, operational hours, special features).

Most of CruiseMapper's ship deck plan pages also review the vessels' newest upgrades/latest refurbishment changes. All dining venues (restaurants and food bars) reviews also contain basic menu/cuisine information, and whether the dining options are complimentary, at fee/surcharge PP or a-la-carte-priced.

All deck plan pages include basic statistical information, such as:

  • year built, vessel class and sisterships (among the fleets of all lines)
  • total number of cabins, plus number per type (Inside, OceanView/RiverView, Balcony, Suite)
  • capacity - passengers (normal and max) and crew capacity
  • number of passenger-accessible decks, number (if any) of swimming pools and whirlpools (hot tubs), passenger elevators, water-slides

On some boats is additionally provided information regarding name origin/meaning, service history, fun facts.

Cruise deck plans (floor layouts) updates

Like all things in life, cruise deck plans do change over time. Often, cruise companies/charter operators change facilities and public venues - their location, type (services and amenities), size, or names. Other changes may relate to new cabin categories.

Often, after a major refurbishment, to the ship are added:

  • new passenger cabins
  • new dining venues - specialty restaurants, bars, lounges, etc
  • new facilities - aqua park, waterslide(s), Spa, pool(s) / Jacuzzi(s), outdoor movie theater, etc
  • or - simply change the names of the existing ones.

We are responsible for all these deckplan changes and keep our deck layouts and reviews regularly updated and correct.

Cruise ship deck plan reviews

In each of CruiseMapper's deck plans you will find a detailed list of all staterooms and facilities on the vessel. This information generally includes:

  • vessel details - year built, last refurbished (and/or scheduled refurbishment), capacity (passengers plus crew)
  • total number of passenger cabins, launderettes (passenger use self-service laundry /if any), onboard credit kiosks (self-service money transfer), photo kiosks
  • dining room(s), buffet restaurant, specialty restaurant(s) /at surcharge per person or with a la carte menus, dinner club, fast food bars/stations
  • theatre/main show lounge
  • lounges and bars, conference/meeting room(s)
  • casino, video games arcade, special gaming room (like F1 car simulator)
  • swimming pool(s) and whirlpools (hot tubs)
  • Spa and Fitness complex (wellness facility), jogging/walking track, roller-skating track, sports court(s)
  • cinema, library, art gallery, photo gallery
  • atrium/lobby area with reception desk, shore excursions desk, duty-free shops and boutiques
  • Promenade Deck (an outdoor area that fully or partially encircles the ship)
  • kids and teen club lounges and playing zones (on some ships with pool/whirlpool), missing on adult-only vessels
  • Aqua Park with slide(s) - on the largest liners only
  • unique facilities - such as rock-climbing wall(s), ice-skating track(s), Zip-line, rotating panoramic capsules, glass-floor walking paths, bumping cars, skydive and surf simulators, F1/Sports Car simulator, bungee trampoline, and many other truly bizarre cruise ship design inventions.

CruiseMapper's dedicated staff does regular updates that reflect all floor plan changes (when officially announced by the companies). We do this job properly - so you can count on us, and the information we provide to be accurate and up-to-date.

Follows the long list of (internal) links, which redirect to the vessel's deck plan review. Know that these are only ocean-going ships.

To see all riverboat deck plans, you'll have to follow CruiseMapper's river cruise lines links and explore the company's fleet. Our list of river cruise companies includes AmaWaterways , ACL-American Cruise Lines , AQV/AQSC-American Queen Voyages/Steamboat Company , Arosa , Avalon Waterways , CroisiEurope , Emerald Waterways , Grand Circle , Luftner-Amadeus , Scenic , Scylla , Uniworld , Viking , also our hubs for River Cruises (smaller operators, time-chartered boats), Russian River Cruises (boats in Russian Federation) and Nile River Cruises (boutique hotel ships sailing in Egypt).

Note: The following list of cruise line deck plans includes only CruiseMapper's largest companies' fleets and only ocean-going vessels. To access our full deckplan database (including small-fleet shipping companies , cruiseferries and riverboats ) use the search box at page top .

What 'below deck' food is like on a cruise ship

One cruise ship musician shared a TikTok video showing what the food for the crew “below deck” is like, and it’s jaw-dropping. TikToker Bryan James (@bryanjames.music) is a musician who spends most of his time living and working on cruise ships. Recently, James shared a video showing what food looks like for the crew “below deck” on a cruise ship, and it’s pretty incredible. “Today, we’ve got a crepe section,” he explains, showing a gourmet spread complete with an array of toppings and crepes made fresh on the spot. “And then we’ve got typical salad bar stuff. That doesn’t really change,” James says while the camera pans over “fresh jalapeños and fresh this and fresh that” . James then moves on to show a variety of beautifully displayed “cheeses and meats and just pretty much anything you could want at a buffet” . “the food is really good, so I don’t really have any complaints,” he notes before showing the colorful assortment of desserts. Viewers were salivating over the delicious medley of treats, many of whom were surprised to discover that the food below deck on a cruise ship could be this good. “Why am I getting ‘career change vibes’? They feed the crew like kings and queens. That’s awesome,” one viewer enthused

Below Deck Captain Jason

YouTube Below Deck Down Under's Captain Jason was the captain of Moatize when it crashed into a wharf.

“Below Deck” has had its fair share of close calls with its captains navigating difficult weather and dockings but a new captain joining the franchise has actually already been in the news for a superyacht crash.

Captain Jason Chambers, who will be at the helm for the new spinoff “Below Deck Down Under” premiering in March, was the captain of Moatize when the 45-meter luxury superyacht crashed while docking in Cairns, Australia, in 2019. According to ABC News , the vessel collided with the wharf and just barely missed a bigger collision with a restaurant trawler called Prawn Star.

One passerby described to the publication that he’d stopped to watch the Moatize dock but it “went the wrong way.” He said, “It just picked up more speed — next minute I heard this crunch when he hit the little boat and I was just waiting for another big crunch into The Salthouse.”

The Prawn Star’s manager Kay Green said it was “scary” and diners were “screaming and very frightened.” Luckily, no one was hurt in the collision. Afterward, Chambers spoke about what went wrong and attributed the crash to a mechanical fault.

Chambers Explained What Happened at the Time & Said the Crash Was Due to a Technical Fault

Chambers was the captain of the superyacht when it crashed and he explained what happened to The Daily Telegraph . “We came [into the marina] and did a tight turn… and our starboard gear was stuck ahead when I selected the go astern,” he said. “We used the bow thruster to come over into a clear vision, went astern to exit the marina, but it was still going ahead at all times.”

We took control in the wheelhouse to try and see if it was a technical fault on the controls, but it was still going ahead again. So, we did what we’re trained to in collisions: we shut down all engines, dropped an anchor and thank God we selected a nice spot where there were no personnel.

The new “Below Deck” captain said he wasn’t worried about the cost of the damage to Moatize and the owner wasn’t either. “We are just making sure that everyone here is still functioning, that no one is put out, and there is no injury – that’s our only concern,” he told the publication.

In a video interview with 7 News , Chambers said the boat was damaged on the left side but it was “mainly cosmetic” and there was nothing too serious. According to ABC News, there were no fuel spills as a result.

Chambers Will Make His Below Deck Debut in March & the Trailer Hinted at What’s to Come

The trailer for “Below Deck Down Under” promises an exciting and drama-filled season ahead for Captain Jason and his crew. The first glimpse we see of him, he’s climbing up a ladder out of the water as one of the crew says, “Captain is just hot.”

However, it seems as though Chambers might also be involved in a bit of drama as one scene in the trailer shows him raising his voice at the chef, saying, “I don’t want your attitude, if you wanna bring it up 3 decibels, I’ll bring it up even more okay?” It also looks like he might be firing a crew member as there’s a brief clip of him telling someone, “We’re gonna terminate your appointment today.”
