Andreya Triana is a singer/songwriter hailing from London, England who is most well known for her collaborations with the likes of Bonobo, Flying Lotus and Mr. Scruff. She is also a songwriter in her own right, having released two solo albums and four E.P’s since her debut in 2010.
There’s nothing that makes you strive for success more than growing up in a sleepy, backwoods town. By the sounds of it, very few things can fuel a young musician’s drive to succeed more than the idea of getting out of there and seeing the world, and Andreya Triana is a picture perfect example of this. She might have been born in the greatest city in the world, but she was cruelly ripped away from it when she was around 14 to live in Worcester, where her step father was working at the time. She had already fallen for music, singing was especially a passion of hers ever since she was tiny, but Worcester wasn’t the kind of place that nurtured her burgeoning talent.
Sick of the dead end jobs stuffing envelopes and preparing sushi, Triana vowed to make a proper attempt at playing music for a living and joined the soul trio Bootis in 2003. The band gigged extensively around the country for two years but Triana still felt stifled creatively, and realized that the only way that she was going to feel fulfilled creatively was by striking out on her own. She left Bootis in 2005 and soon afterwards found a regular gig as the singer for Trip-Hop legend Bonobo’s DJ Sets. However, after settling down to write and create a backlog of her own work, she created a demo tape of her singing into a sampler and creating an entire soundscape with her voice, which she called the “FreeFlo Sessions”.
She submitted the tape to the Red Bull Music Academy, and Triana became one of 60 people from all over the world, including future soul sensation Aloe Blacc, who got accepted into the program. This meant that she spent two weeks in Melbourne, Australia learning how to make music at a professional level with artists like Peter Hook, Just Blaze and Skream. It was there that she met the experimental electronica DJ Flying Lotus, with whom she wrote a track called “Tea Leaf Dancers”, an effort that he was so impressed with that he ended up putting song on an E.P of his called “Reset”. This gave Triana a massive boost in credibility and in visibility, leading to a record contract with Ninja Tune by the time she had returned to the U.K.
With her new record contract, she managed to rope in her old touring buddy Bonobo to produce her debut album “Lost Where I Belong”, which was critically adored when it came out in September 2010. In return her vocals were featured on a number of tracks on Bonobo’s 2010 album “Black Sands”, and ever since then, she’s become the connoisseur’s choice for fans of both electronica and soul. She already has collaborations with the likes of Mr. Scruff and Breach under her belt, the latter of which was even a top ten single in the form of “Everything You Never Had (We Had It All)” in 2013. Her second album “Giants” seems to promise that she’ll become as big a name as anyone she’s worked with, and now she’s at the peak of her powers, Andreya Triana comes highly recommended.
Live reviews
I first heard Andreya Triana’s husky, buttery voice on Bonobo’s album ‘Black Sands,’ where she complimented Bonobo’s (Simon Green) smooth production on the tracks ‘Eyesdown,’ ‘The Keeper’ and ‘Stay the Same.’ It drifts in and out, delicately weaving alongside Simon Green’s meticulous beats. Triana’s debut album, ‘Lost Where I Belong,’ also incorporated Green’s production talent, creating an album which was full of soul, reminiscent of 60s Motown yet meeting with contemporary electronica. Triana has grown and grown, finding success on both sides of the Atlantic, resulting in collaborations with US artists such as Flying Lotus, whose space-soul, hip-hop vibes matches greatly with Triana’s voice.
Tickets recently sold out within a few days for her show at Wilton Music Hall this September, with the intimacy of the venue bound to create an incredible atmosphere for her beautiful music to be performed. She evokes this sense of timeless class, as if she could mix with jazz singers of old. Tender, delicate, soulful, music which would never tire that pairs perfectly with the wave of trip-hop influenced producers such as Bonobo. Live, she often performs with a full band, who offer a gentle accompaniment laden with groove, letting her voice shine through. It is likely that a new album will arise soon, with several intimate shows planned for this autumn.

A name hot on the lips of esteemed UK publications for 2015 is Andreya Triana. The vocalist and songwriter can already name Flying Lotus and Bonobo as past collaborators and with her smooth soul and jazz vocal she is identifying herself as one of the UK's most icy cool breakout stars of the year. The new album 'Giants' is already being tipped as an album of the year and the live shows to accompany the release have received equal praise.
In the five years since she released her mini album 'Lost Where I Belong' Andreya has identified her sound and the music she wants to create as an artist. She conducts herself with a quiet sophistication as she sings out her soulful notes at record perfect quality. New tracks including 'Gold' sound like an off-cut from a classic Aretha Franklin album whilst she channels Candi Staton on the more upbeat 'That's Alright with Me'. A personal highlight is a reworked version of 'Darker Than Blue' along with a glittering performance of 'Keep Running' that leads effortlessly into her current high of 'Gold'.
Great show. Andreya was brilliant and band too. What a great venue.
Sound was not at it's best. A lot of mic feedback and too much EQ on the strings sounding very unnatural. Engineer too late on bringing louder the soloing artist. Quite disappointing.
We had an amazing time. Andreya Triana is a superstar. Love her voice, love her character. Just a top night where everybody was full of love and respect for all the other people in the room. Missing her already!
Awesome vocals. Real passion and energy. Great show. Really made the crowd engage. A good mix of tempo in the set list. Bristol was very happy. I think she should go mainstream large soon.
She was just lit!! Her performance, her voice, her style.. just speechless! And her patience at the end of the show taking pictures and signing makes her so human and adorable! Love her!
Wow what a show. Andreya has an amazing voice and is truly a very talented artist. The venue was great. Will definitely be going to see Andreya Triana perform again.

EXCLUSIVE: Andreya Triana debuts awesome new single
By Ella Alexander
Think Lianne Le Havas crossed with Nina Simone and Jessie Ware and you're close to the sound of rising star Andreya Triana and today, she unveils her new single exclusively on GLAMOUR.
Modern soul is her USP and her voice is a rich, powerful medley - the kind that never goes out of fashion. There will always be reason for languid soulful female vocals; Triana's music is a happy mix of feeling both familiar and distinctive.
New single That's Alright With Me is released on 25 May, following the launch of her much-anticipated second album, Giants on 4 May. It's a slow, affecting track with an empowering message that ultimately carries you upwards.

"I wrote That's Alright With Me at a point when I was feeling quite reflective, I wanted to write something universal and also hopefully something that people could relate to," she said. "I was thinking about times of struggle and how the love of amazing people around me got me through. I guess it's a All You Need Is Love kind of song!"
Hailing from South East London, Triana played at a packed-out London's Village Underground last year and is next to play at London's Koko on 17 November. Tickets go on show at 11am on 17 Friday here . Get your tickets before everyone else makes a beeline.

“I would describe my philosophy toward music as being as open as possible,” singer-songwriter Andreya Triana says. Born and raised in South East London, Triana’s music is infused with jazz, pop, and classical elements, and paired with her deep, soulful vocals. As she sings, “When I open my eyes / I see there’s so much beauty / There’s so much more than I ever believed … It’s all feels like gold to me / It might not be a diamond / But it shines for me,” on “Gold,” the lyrics reflect her process of moving forward and overcoming struggles.
“Much like any creative person, you question yourself all the time,” she continues. “Some days it’s brilliant, other days you wonder what you’re doing and if you’ll be able to work. The biggest thing is just keeping positive and believing in yourself.”
Last week, Triana released Giants , the follow up to her 2010 debut, Lost Where I Belong , via Counter Records. Through the journey in the last five years, her process became more about language and use of metaphor, focusing on painting pictures through words and telling honest stories. “I’m talking about all the things I experience as a human being, as a woman, and as a creative person trying to live my life in the best way possible,” she explains.
Triana first emerged within the music industry in 2006 after participating in the Red Bull Music Academy in Australia, and since then she has collaborated with acts like Flying Lotus and Bonobo, who also produced her debut.
We spoke to the musician over the phone from her home in London just before the release of Giants.
FROM 70 TO 12: I was touring quite extensively with my first album, maybe for a year and a half or two years. After that I was like, “I need to have a breather. I need to figure out what I’m doing.” So I’ve been writing for three years, chipping away, really working on my songwriting. In that time, I wrote 70-plus songs. The beauty of time is that you have the space to live with things for a while. When you’ve written a few songs, it becomes really clear—the ones that stick, that really move you, or the ones that caught and then a week later you’re like, “Naah.” The process of elimination and seeing what could stand the test of time helped [distill the number of songs] to 12 that would fit on the album.
FINDING HER WAY: I think, [on] my first album I said things, but not in a strong way. This new process, I was delving a lot deeper emotionally and lyrically. I really got into metaphors and strong words to encapsulate ideas and put a strong vision in someone’s mind, to really paint a picture and tell a story. But that’s a lasting process. That will always continue.
FOR MY MOTHER: “Everything You Never Had” is a song I wrote about my mum. She had me when she was 18 and we struggled financially, but she was amazing. I wanted to write a song to say thank you. I remember [at one point in my life] I was a bit all over the place and I called my mum, “Mum! What do I do?” and she’s like, “Andreya, it’s yours for the taking.” That’s really stuck with me. So many people have amazing talents, but the difference is that few people believe they can or choose to go for it. The times when I’m struggling, I take a step back and remember what my mom said—”It’s yours for the taking. You can do this.” She’s been constant support, always rooting for me. She’s my biggest fan and my biggest critic.
AT THE AGE OF SEVEN… I was obsessed with [music]. It was a thing that moved me and made me dance and made me happy. As I got more and more interested, more and more obsessed, I started writing poetry. Then I started making mix tapes at home and recording my own songs using two cassette tapes, recording back and forth.
ROOTS OF STEEL: One of my earliest memories is that my mum used to play in a really big steel drum band. She took me to rehearsals, and I think I screamed my head off because it was so loud, but I remember being really moved by the music at a very young age. Even now, when I hear people play the steel drum on the street, it’s an emotional experience.
ONE HOUR, ONE SONG: I met Flying Lotus at the Red Bull Academy in 2006 when we were both participants. Everyone was collaborating and you got to meet people from all over the world, so we had studio time for an hour, I heard the beat he did, and wrote the lyrics in about 20 minutes, then we put the vocal down. It was a simple, straightforward thing. It’s been nearly 10 years, and still, I would say [being at the Red Bull Academy] is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life.
ON INFLUENCES: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hil l was probably the biggest influence on me musically. I absolutely adore her. I also love Björk. At the moment, I’m really into Emily King and Sia—she’s really inspired me, the way she started off as a featured artist for other people and has gone on to become an amazing solo artist. Jamie Lidell, also, I’m a big fan of—super soulful, really experimental, amazing electronic vibe, but still a killer songwriter.
WRITING SONGS IS… like solving a puzzle or doing an equation—you have to keep chipping away until it fits and it’s right.

Irkutsk is the starting point for most trips to Lake Baikal - it is the closest international transport hub to the lake linking it not only to Moscow, but also St Petersburg, Novosibirsk or Krasnoyarsk by air, and dozens of other cities by train. There are lots of options to get to Baikal from Irkutsk - by bus, helicopter, car, water and of course train. Listvyanka, the closest settlement to the lake and the starting point of the Circum-Baikal Railway, is just 70km from Irkutsk and the must-see Olkhon Island is 270km from the city. During the high season it is very busy and therefore we advise you to book all transportation in advance.
