Junior travel consultant job description.

careertrend article image

A junior travel consultant is someone who assists with the travel schedules of a corporation’s employees. Junior travel consultants help make arrangements for employees or clients to reach out-of-town destinations, lending a hand in lining up flights, rental cars and lodging. On top of that, they perform clerical duties for senior travel consultants by forwarding calls, handling mail, keeping records and maintaining itineraries for travelers.

Junior travel consultants work for either a company’s travel department or a private agency. They often perform tasks that might be considered mundane -- such as filing, bookkeeping or responding to email -- but are crucial in helping people reach their destination. In the event an employee is traveling out of the country, junior travel consultants typically play a role in setting up passports and visas, and researching the customs of the country or city in which the employee will be staying.

A junior travel consultant performs many tasks and needs to possess a wide array of skills. She needs to be a strong communicator and highly organized, helping employees feel at ease before a big trip. She must have a thorough understanding of how to use the computer and phone system, both of which are used to help plan an excursion. Junior travel consultants should be accomplished record-keepers and skilled at math, since travel arrangements need to fit within a company’s allotted budget.

There are no set requirements for someone to become a junior travel consultant. Most learn on the job, although most employers seek candidates with at least a high school diploma or the equivalent when hiring a travel consultant. Some junior travel consultants have a college degree, with an emphasis on courses in travel, tourism, business and communications.

Jobs for travel agents are expected to decrease by 1 percent from 2008 to 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). While there is information specific to junior travel consultants, it is assumed their jobs fall into the category of travel agents. The BLS cited the Internet as a big reason for the predicted decline in jobs for travel agents, as “the ready availability of travel and airline websites that allow people to research and plan their own trips, make their own reservations, and purchase their own tickets will result in less demand for travel agents for routine travel arrangements.”

Travel agents earned a median salary of anywhere from $20,000 to more than $47,000 per year in February 2010, according to PayScale.com. Junior travel consultants are likely at the lower end of that scale, depending on their experience and size of the company for which they are employed.

Travel Agency: Class Role-play Activity (Jr. High/High School)

Classroom activity for jr. high school or high school esl students.

ESL Level: Lower-Intermediate to Intermediate

No. of Students: 6-40

Activity Focus: learning about world cities, speaking, research skills

Class Time: four 45-minute classes

Download : Available on TeachersPayTeachers

Travel Agency Role-play Activity Execution :

I teach at a Japanese junior high school. Interestingly, our school is in Prague, Czech Republic. The kids in my advanced class told me they wanted to learn more about European cities, so I designed this travel agency role-play activity. It's a bit complicated but you don't have to do it my way. Just look at my materials for ideas and then design your own role-play that suits your students.

Step 1: Explain Activity & Form a Travel Agency

I told the students that they were going to become travel agents for a travel agency. I told them that each travel agency has two agents, so they should get in pairs .

travel agency activity template

Next, I told them that each travel agent was going to design a trip to  one city  in Europe (you can use the whole world if you prefer).

Then I showed them a COMPLETED version of the above travel template (I filled it out with information about my home city in Canada).

I asked each student to include:

  • 3 tourist attractions for their location -and-
  • one custom (e.g. "people speak Italian there")

"other"  can be used for anything miscellaneous (e.g. "Italy uses the Euro currency.")

Feel free to change the template however you'd like.

Step 2: Research One Destination Each

We went to the school's computer room and the students began their research. I had hoped to finish this in one 45-minute class, but we had a few delays so it ended up taking nearly two classes. Students mainly used Wikipedia (in both Japanese and English).

Step 3 : Practice Role-Play Dialogue

Next, I gave the class the below travel agency hand-out.

travel agency dialogue #1 for ESL classroom activity

The expressions I decided to focus on were:

  • go on  a trip

I  modeled  the conversation with one of the advanced students in front of the class.

Then I had the students practice the conversation (without writing anything) with a partner using their  hometown  as the destination. I told them that I didn't want them reading the dialogue during the activity, so they should try to  memorize  the key expressions.

Next, I explained that the boxes below the dialogue (the ones that say "Travel Agency Name") can be used to  make notes  about the trips they hear about from other travel agencies. Since each agency has two agents, each offering a trip somewhere different, there are two destinations to be filled in per agency.

In my class, there were 14 students. So there are 6 boxes (6  other  agencies to visit). You'll need to delete or add boxes, depending on the number of travel agencies you have in your English class.

Step 4 : Do the Role-Play Activity

You'll have to have pairs alternate between being customers who are shopping for a trip and travel agents who are selling their travel packages. I didn't involve money at this stage. I just had students get information and say "Thanks for the information. I'll be back later."

It took about one 45-minute class and a half for all of my students to visit all the other travel agencies and hear about the other cities they could visit.

Step 5: Decide & Purchase a Ticket

In this class, I had the students look at the  notes  they took and decide where they wanted to go. Then I modeled the dialogue (see below) for  purchasing a ticket  with a student in front of the class.

travel agency dialogue 2 for ESL classroom activity

Next, I explained some of the more difficult vocabulary on the two "tickets" below. To make it more authentic, I cut the tickets out and gave them to the students (two tickets per student).

Once they understood what all the fields were for, I had them practice with one ticket. With their partner, I had them go through the dialogue and ask the relevant questions about their partner's destination in order to practice filling in the ticket.

Then, when they understood the process, I had them stand up and go to the actual travel agency they wanted to purchase a ticket from. The travel agent there then used his/her last ticket to sell to the customer.

Step 6 : Closing

In the end, I had each student stand up and say something like "I bought a ticket to Vienna because I have never been to Austria and I want to eat sausages." After each student had announced their purchase and a reason, we were finished.

And that's how I did it. It was a good activity; the students learned plenty about European cities and they had the opportunity to speak a lot. If you'd like to try this roleplay, please download it here . I recommend designing something similar for your students.

Happy travels.

How much do travel agents make?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, travel agents earn an average income of $43,810 per year ($21.06 per hour). Top-earning travel agents (90th percentile) earn over $74,220 annually. This occupation has an expected growth rate of 20% by 2031, much faster than the average growth rate for all professions (5%). This translates into 7,500 openings for travel agents every year.

What does a travel agent do?

Based on information provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, travel agents sell transportation, lodging, and admission to entertainment activities to individuals and groups planning trips. They offer advice on destinations, plan trip itineraries, calculate total costs, and make travel arrangements for clients.

A travel agent's typical duties can include anything from organizing travel for business and vacation clients (planning and arranging tour packages, excursions, and day trips) to giving details on required documents, such as passports and visas, and on complying with cross-border entry requirements, such as health and safety protocols. Travel agents also describe trips to clients, advise about local customs and attractions, book reservations for travel, hotels, rental cars, and special events, and make alternative booking arrangements if changes arise before or during a trip.

What is a certified travel agent?

A certified travel agent has earned one of the available industry certifications, such as Certified Travel Associate (CTA) or Certified Travel Counselor (CTC). While they are not required to work in the industry, travel agent certifications can add prestige to your resume. When considering a CTA certification, it is necessary to first obtain the TAP certification. This course covers the fundamental knowledge necessary for this certification and serves as a solid foundation for your CTA certification journey.

Does this course prepare you for a certification?

The Travel Agent Training course will prepare you to sit for the TAP (Travel Agent Proficiency) test, offered by the Travel Institute (formerly ICTA), the registration fee for this test is included with this course. The Travel Agent Proficiency or TAP test is the first step towards professional recognition. The test allows students to demonstrate that they have mastered the basics of the travel industry – selling skills, basic geography, and the items/products sold by travel counselors.

When can I start the course?

This course is open enrollment, so you can register and start the course as soon as you are ready. Access to your course can take 24-48 business hours.

How long does it take to complete this course?

This course is self-paced and open enrollment, so you can start when you want and finish at your own pace. When you register, you'll receive six (6) months to complete the course.

What if I don't have enough time to complete my course within the time frame provided?

The time allotted for course completion has been calculated based on the number of course hours. However, if you are unable to complete the course, contact the student advising team to see what options you may have available to work out a suitable completion date. Please note that an extension fee may be charged.

What kind of support will I receive?

Self-paced courses are designed to be user-friendly and independent, minimizing the need for external support. In courses with instructors, our direct platform support feature includes opportunities for questions, discussions, and remediation, with email and phone support available for select courses. Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Please remember that of all these tours are private and can be adjusted to your taste. You can add, replace or skip some sights; you can add more days to the package or cut the tour short. Our specialists will be glad to help you create the tour of your dreams!

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Moscow in 1 Day (Walking tour)

Welcome to visit moscow tours.

We provide authentic, informative and memorable tour packages and city tours, at very competitive prices. Visit Moscow Tours are available not only in Moscow, but also in other cities: Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Suzdal and Sergiev Posad.  We also organise customised individual programs tailored just for you.

Our guests come in large groups, small private groups, as couples or as single travellers. We take care of and treat our guests with respect in a friendly and warm family environment. We show people our beautiful cities with passion and deep knowledge of their history, culture and traditions.

Our guides are extremely hospitable, helpful and well-informed. They are simply the best because only by providing the best services can we make the world fall in love with Russia. And we are very happy when our guests say that they will definitely come back to Russia and that they will tell all their friends how great Russia is! That is what inspires us to put even more dedication and hard work into our tours, knowing that what we do is positive and meaningful.

Our classic tours include tours of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, two main Russian cities.

Moscow is a big and busy  megalopolis and Russia’s capital city, where more than 12 million people live and work. Our capital city is happening place; it is mysterious, elegant, luxurious, fashionable, clean and bright, with its unique legends, traditions and events. It is with great pride that we show the Red Square and the Kremlin, our Underground and Tretyakovskaya Gallery, among other stunning attractions.

Saint Petersburg is our second capital,  the second largest city in the Russian Federation. This wonderful city has a strong and lively aristocratic spirit, uniquely Russian royal architecture, magnificent museums and theatres. Saint Petersburg bears the royal heritage of Russia, which can be felt in its air, its streets, parks, monuments, museums and citizens.  In Saint Petersburg tours, we will take you to the Hermitage, Peter and Paul Fortress, Faberge Museum and Orthodox Cathedrals. We’re sure you will love it!

If you have a few more days to spare, venture into the dreamy Russian countryside in Suzdal or Sergiev Posad. Suzdal is a small town with a population of about ten thousand people, situated on less than 15 square kilometres. This tiny area is home to 53 historic cathedrals, five monasteries and a kremlin. Church domes are visible like mushrooms from anywhere and everywhere in the town like in a fairy tale. No wonder Suzdal is called the ‘Town Museum”.  It is definitely worth visiting!

Just try any of Visit Moscow Tours’ tour packages or any individual city tour, and we promise that you will want to come back to Russia again.  Russia is huge with countless amazing places to visit. There are so many unique experiences to be had and energies to be felt that one tour is definitely not enough to explore this vast land. It is also a very safe destination to travel, and we have a tradition of warm hospitality. Our people adore and take care of visitors as our own guests, and even if they do not know your language very well, they still try to be helpful and hospitable.

Our guides will show you the most interesting attractions and historical places, taking you on a journey to the past to enjoy stories of medieval times, the Romanov monarchy, the Soviet Era. And of course, we will show you the contemporary life of our country through authentic local experiences.

We look forward to meeting you soon!

One Linebacker Lions Could Select in Every Round of NFL Draft

Examining linebacker fits for the Detroit Lions.

  • Author: Christian Booher
  • Publish date: Mar 29, 2024

In this story:

The Detroit Lions have all the necessary ingredients of a solid linebacking corps.

In Jack Campbell, they have an exciting young player. Alex Anzalone is the veteran leader, while Malcolm Rodriguez and Derrick Barnes offer exciting upside. Barnes , in particular, showed great promise in a stellar 2023 campaign.

There’s also Jalen Reeves-Maybin, who offers a veteran savvy in a rotational role at points.

Still, the Lions could benefit from adding young talent to the group, even if it’s just for competitive purposes within the room.

Here is one linebacker the Lions could select in every round of the NFL Draft.

Edgerrin Cooper, Texas A&M

Considered the top linebacker in this class by many, Cooper is a rangy and athletic linebacker. What stands out most about his style of play is his toughness and physicality.

The defender stands out with his ability to get after the passer in blitz situations, as evidenced by him logging eight sacks in his final collegiate season. Additionally, he logged a whopping 17 tackles for loss in 2023.

Cooper was invited to the East-West Shrine Bowl but did not participate in practices or the game. He’s an intriguing player from a tools perspective and could wind up being an excellent addition to any defense.

Junior Colson, Michigan

One of the most fundamentally sound linebackers in the class is Colson , who emerged as a key part of Michigan’s national championship winning defense. He finished the 2023 campaign with a 90.2 tackling grade and came up just short of a second-straight 100 tackle season.

Colson doesn’t have eye-popping totals from a pass-rush perspective, as he had 13 pressures last year and just 2.5 career sacks. However, he has versatility to play either the MIKE or WILL positions and appears ready to contribute at the NFL level right away.

Nathaniel Watson, Mississippi State

A veteran option in this year’s class is Watson , who played six seasons for the Bulldogs. He experienced a gradual uptick in production before bursting out in 2023, as he had career-high totals in every statistical category.

Among the new bests established was in the tackle category, where he logged 137 stops and 13 for loss. Watson also had 10 sacks and 35 total pressures last year, per Pro Football Focus.

Watson has played both the MIKE and WILL positions in college. Though he’s older than many in his class, he still projects as a good player with some fine-tuning of technique. He’s a solid run defender who can make an impact in coverage as well.

The Lions do not currently own a fourth-round selection

Jackson Sirmon, California

A bicep injury ended Sirmon’s 2023 campaign early after just six games. He’s a traditional stack linebacker who doesn’t bring a ton of pass-rush production. However, Sirmon is a strong run defender who back-to-back 90-plus tackle seasons before last year ended early.

Sirmon has 16.5 tackles for loss in his career between stints at Washington and California. He has good eyes and a feel for diagnosing run fits. Another strong trait of his is his tackling, as he graded out very well in that are per PFF.

Aaron Casey, Indiana

Casey was up and down in his career at Indiana. He has potential to be a standout at the next level, but his execution didn’t always meet that standard. Casey had his moments, though, as he finished with 20 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks in 2023.

His tackling grade per PFF was just 52.4, signaling a need for improvement in that area. He’s agile and can get off blocks fairly easy, but he had a high missed tackle rate at 18.6 percent.

He is athletic enough to be a strong contributor on special teams early in his career, and may be best working as a WILL after playing mostly MIKE at the collegiate level.

Easton Gibbs, Wyoming

Gibbs is a punishing defender who packs a punch with his physicality. He had a missed tackle rate of just 7.2 percent while compiling back-to-back 100 tackle campaigns.

Playing at Wyoming may have limited his exposure, but he definitely looks the part of a solid player who could simply fall under the radar. He has a nose for the ball and often flocks to ball carriers.

Gibbs does a good job of fighting off blockers and wins with his hands. His abilities as a tackler lend themselves to a good chance of cracking a roster on special teams, while he can continue to develop into a rotational defensive player.

Wyoming linebacker Easton Gibbs (LB13) works out during the NFL Scouting Combine.
