Augustana choir to tour california in march.

ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (February 12, 2024) — The Augustana Choir, under the direction of Dr Jon Hurty, will perform concerts in California March 21-25, followed by a home concert on April 6 in Davenport.

The 54-voice ensemble, known for its innovative programming, attention to detail, and musical excellence, will perform at five Southern California churches. The tour will include collaborations with choirs directed by Augustana alumni Brent Wilson and Jens Hurty, Dr Hurty’s son.

“This year’s program includes a mix of traditional and modern choral selections, including works by Alberto Grau, Ēriks Ešenvalds, and Alice Parker, as well as a number of new composers from a variety of countries,” said Dr Hurty. “A primary theme of the first half of the program is caring for the earth — a topic that many recent choral composers have addressed in their compositions.”

Previously the director of choral activities at Concordia University in Irvine, California, Dr Hurty said he always enjoys returning to California and sharing a part of the Midwest choral tradition with friends, family, and colleagues.

Established in 1931, the Augustana Choir has been conducted by Dr Hurty since 1996. Under Dr Hurty’s direction, the choir has performed at Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York City, as well as many major cathedrals and concert venues in Sweden, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, Austria, Japan, Korea, Spain, France, and the Czech Republic.

Most recently, the group toured Germany and the Czech Republic in the summer of 2022 and the midwestern United States in the spring of 2023.

Augustana is an American rock band from San Diego in California, USA originally. They were formed in 2003 and are still producing music today.

The band was created by current member Dan Layus who brought three of his high school friends together with the intention of starting a rock band. Their full length debut album was released in 2003, with a meagre 1000 copies being produced. Layus, after this disappointment, moved to Southern California with one bandmate, picked up a drummer and began what would be his incline to success. In California, the band toured with several established artists including Switchfoot, Maroon 5, The Fray, Snow Patrol and Goo Goo Dolls. Indeed, the band’s musical style is often compared many of these bands that they toured with.

The band’s first successful album was called ‘All the Stars and Boulevards’ and was released September 6, 2005. It reached number one on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and number 96 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. The accompanying single, also released in 2005, was titled ‘Boston’ and remains Augustana’s best-selling and biggest single to date. Other well-known singles of the band’s include ‘Sweet and Low’, ‘Twenty Years’ and ‘Hey Now’, all of which are from their second album, ‘Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt’. Many of these songs appeared on famous television shows, including One Tree Hill and Friday Night Lights, generating the band some well-deserved publicity.

The band have since released two more albums, ‘Augustana’ and ‘Life Imitating Life’. Throughout it’s time, the band has seen many members come and go. All members, original and old, consist of Jared Palomar (bass guitar, vocals), Chris Sachtleben (lead guitar, vocals), Justin South (drums), Josiah Rosen (lead guitar, vocals), John Vincent (piano, organ, keyboards, vocals), Josh Calhoun (drums) and, of course, founder and leader Dan Layus.

Live reviews

Augustana provides a show full of energy and passion. Something unique about the performance was that Dan Layus (lead singer) spoke maybe a few sentences to the audience throughout the show. The setlist was 26 songs with few breaks. The lack of audience interaction did not hamper the stage presence. The performance of the songs were spot on, with Dan holding high and low notes throughout the night. "Sweet and Low" was very notable live. There were a few modifications to the pauses, notes, and beat, but the energy put into the instrumentals was incredible. I think back to the live performance when I listen to my iPod and for that reason it is now one of my favorite Augustana songs. While Augustana's more recent hits have been guitar focused, the keyboard was an essential part of the live performance. "Remember Me" was performed solely by Dan on the piano. The emotion he put into this song was incredible. He almost looked as if he were tearing up towards the end. With just the piano, Dan's voice, and the fans singing along, you felt even more attached to this strong performance. His voice had power here and I'd say this song by far was the highlight of the show. Augustana played all of the classic favorites (even though the current members of the band were not around then) and plenty of newer songs as well. It is a long setlist but the show just flies by. This was an excellent night and I'd recommend seeing Augustana to any fan of piano rock. Definitely a memorable show.

Augustana have been performing on the rock circuit since 2003 now, and have mustered an incredible army of devoted followers. The American band formed in San Diego in the sunny state of California, and have been compared to countless all American rock bands during their time, including The Fray, Snow Patrol and Goo Goo Dolls, all of whom Augustana have performed with. Their impressive collaboration record comes as no surprise when you listen to their music. Lead singer Dan Layus has a phenomenal voice, beautiful with soft but poignant vocals. The crowd went wild when the notoriously shy lead singer stepped on to stage with his band of brilliant musicians. Layus opened the show with a stint on the piano, opening with hit ‘Boston’ which drove the crowd absolutely wild. The atmosphere was very intense and the crowd stayed largely quiet until striking a unanimous chorus for the lyrics ‘You don’t know me, you don’t even care…’ It was a magical moment. The band closed with another hit, the beautiful ‘Sweet and Low’.

Bob Dylan would sound like Augustana if he could sing. I know Bob Dylan sings. But if he could sing WELL.

I am not knocking Dylan's writing AT ALL. He is one of the best songwriters EVER.

BUT, just imagine Bob Dylan younger and able to sing brilliantly. That is Dan. The main singer of Augustana.

His songs take you on a journey. This is said often of performers. But Augustana literally paint pictures in your ears, That you can close your eyes and see.

I sing. I would boast that I can sing like Dan. BUT ... I could do it for one night. Maybe not even a full night.

How Dan sings like this night after night, I do not know? But I am truly thankful for.

The obvious song to seek out if you don't know Augustana is "Boston" their "hit". But listen for "Dust" and "American Heartbreak" too.

Please go and see these guys whenever you can. Tickets aren't expensive, like some groups seem to charge. The quality of show you will get in ratio to the price you will pay is unquestionable.

The Louisiana was a very small venue, so much so, that it was difficult to get through the door to get into the room the band was playing in.

The band themselves were amazing. Dan Layus' vocals were stunning. His talent is simply breath-taking. Hopefully they will be back over here again soon, and when they are, I will definitely be there!

Was one of the best concerts I have seen in a very long time. Love Dan’s voice and all the heart he puts into his music. Hope they are putting out music for many years to come.

One of the best concerts ever!! Took my two younger daughters. It was their first concert. They loved it! I just wish they had merch. Cant wait to see them again.

Augustana went above and beyond my expectations. Dan and the rest of the band were amazing and I can't wait to see them again. Best show I've ever been to.

Augustana Christmas Vespers 2023

And a little child shall lead them.

The theme of this year’s Vespers comes from the words of the prophet Isaiah, “...and a little child shall lead us,” reminding us of the surprising and wonderful promise of this season, that salvation/God comes through something as unexpected as a small and simple child.

Vespers services will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. The services will feature Augustana’s choirs, percussion ensemble and mark the return of the Augustana Brass Choir led by Instructor Matthew Erickson.

Performances

Christmas Vespers 2023 will include evening services and an abbreviated Saturday afternoon service so those who are young in age or young at heart can attend. Master storyteller Tom Roberts will join us as a special guest for this matinee.

Augustana Choir to tour California in March

The voice ensemble will sing a selection of traditional and contemporary choral works. The choir is known for its innovative programming, attention to detail, and musical excellence.

The choir has a tradition of touring abroad and throughout the U.S. and has been invited to sing at many state and regional conventions.
