13 Best Things to Do in Montego Bay, Jamaica

montego bay trips

Agustavop / Getty Images

Montego Bay is one of the top tourist destinations in Jamaica if not the entire Caribbean, welcoming visitors arriving by air via Sangster International Airport and sea from the multitude of cruise ships docked at the enormous cruise port downtown. The capital of St. James Parish, Montego Bay was founded in the 16th century by Spanish colonizers and today is home to scores of swanky resorts aiming to cater to every available budget. When visitors aren't relaxing on MoBay's beaches, there are countless options for fun and entertainment.

Get Outdoors on a Guided Tour

Island Routes

If you're gunning for more activities during your trip to Montego Bay, Island Routes offers a variety of half-day and full-day outdoor adventures like catamaran and snorkeling cruises, zip lining and river tubing day trips, deep sea sport fishing excursions, and dolphin encounters. You can also sign up for Jamaican cooking classes, horseback riding, ATV rides, and Blue Mountain bicycle tours. Other popular day trips, like bamboo river rafting on the Martha Brae River, nighttime swims at Luminous Lagoon, and eco-adventure tours of Good Hope Estate are also available.

For a memorable only-in-Jamaica kind of experience, try one of the Drive Your Own Adventure tours in Montego Bay or nearby Negril (about a 90-minute drive down the West Coast), which let you cruise around town in your own Mini Cooper as you explore some of the area's top sights and attractions at your own pace.

Do a Day Trip to Dunn's River Falls

narvikk / Getty Images

Located about 90-minutes away near Ocho Rios, Dunn's River Falls makes a great day trip, whether you decide to rent a car and explore more of the island or embark on a guided tour from Montego Bay. Besides enjoying panoramic views of the falls, you can also make the 960-foot climb up them, have a picnic in the gardens, and shop for souvenirs at the local craft market.

The beautiful terraced waterfall complex is also close to Nine Mile, the birthplace of Bob Marley. Stop by to learn more about his fascinating life at the museum (tours are given by local Rastafarian guides), or pay your respects at his final resting place.

Swim in the Healing Waters of Doctor's Cave Beach

In the 1920s, a British osteopath claimed that the turquoise waters of Doctor's Cave Beach had curative properties. Practically overnight, the cove transformed into one of Jamaica's most popular beaches. It's still one of the island's most popular beaches , though it can get overcrowded when cruise ships are docked in Montego Bay. Its proximity to downtown, just steps away from the hip Gloucester Avenue, and cerulean waters keep it a favorite spot of sand all year long.

Be aware that since Doctor's Cave Beach is a private beach, travelers do have to pay to use it. That said, your admission goes toward maintaining the onsite bathrooms, restaurants, and snorkel equipment rental facilities. With crystal clear water and tropical fish swimming about, you'll definitely want to snorkel here.

Hand Feed Birds and Get Ecological

Just the name of this Montego Bay bird sanctuary sounds relaxing. The Ahhh...Ras Natango Gallery and Garden houses all kinds of local birds and tropical plants, all while offering cliffside views overlooking the bay. This little slice of Eden is a great escape from the hordes of beach tourists and cruise passengers who are less likely to make it up to the gardens. It's about a 15-minute drive from the city center, though you can opt to include round-trip transportation from Montego Bay with your ticket.

Apart from the sheer beauty of the park, one of the highlights here is being able to hand feed the local wildlife, such as hummingbirds and lizards. Everything at the park is used intentionally, reused when possible, and the owners make it a point to teach visitors about sustainability. In addition to the flora and fauna, there's a gift shop featuring crafts made by local artists.

Enjoy an Eco-Adventure at Good Hope Estate

Visit Jamaica

Tour company Chukka Caribbean Adventures has converted the grounds of the historic Good Hope Estate, founded in 1774, into a playground for thrill-seekers while at the same time, preserving the stately home for tours.

Several packages and passes are available, with most including a combination of house tours, rum tastings, a chance to swim in the estate's pool as well as other adventure activities like zip-lining, ATV tours, river tubing, or taking on the challenge course. Carriage rides are also available for those not so thrill-inclined, making Good Hope Estate a fun and relaxing day trip that's worth the 45-minute drive from Montego Bay to Falmouth.

Tour Cockpit Country

Not far from Good Hope Estate, Cockpit Country is Jamaica's wildest outback, a land of steep hills and deep valleys that once helped escaped slaves known as Maroons elude and outlast their former masters for centuries. Today, it's one of Jamaica's top ecotourism destinations, and where you can also visit several still-thriving Maroon communities .

Popular activities in this part of the island include hiking, biking, kayaking, and caving. Check with local tour companies like Island Routes and Chukka to see which half- and full-day Cockpit Country tours you can do from Montego Bay.

Take a Nighttime Cruise to Luminous Lagoon

To experience Jamaica's bioluminescent bay—the only natural nighttime attraction on the island—head to the Glistening Waters Hotel before sunset to catch a nightly tour of Luminous Lagoon.

Tour boats leave from the hotel and cruise into a quiet corner of the lagoon inhabited by microscopic sea creatures that light up in response to movement. It's cool enough to see the effect when the boat moves through the water, but the real thrills happen when you jump in and see the glowing swirls and eddies created when you move your hands and feet. Meanwhile, your always-entertaining boat captain and guide are there to explain the science behind the display and share interesting stories about Jamaican life and culture.

Sample Some Jerk Cuisine

Spicy Jamaican jerk cuisine is world-famous, and Montego Bay is home to two of the best purveyors on the planet: Scotchie's and The Pork Pit. Scotchie's is a quirky roadside stand along Highway A1 (Falmouth Road) that serves jerk chicken, pork, and fish with sides of yam, breadfruit, rice and peas, and festivals (Jamaican dumplings). The backyard flavor of the place is enhanced with an open bar, where you can order Red Stripes and rum drinks to sip from on chairs made of old beer kegs.

Back in Montego Bay, check out The Pork Pit on Gloucester Avenue. As with Scotchie's, the jerk food here is cooked over big open fires fed with pimento wood with a dry rub for flavor, not sauce. You'll find the perfect balance here, as it's popular among locals, not overrun with tourists, and not too far of a walk from the rest of the action downtown.

Shop, Sip, and Snack in Downtown MoBay

Ritcharnd Moskow / Wikimedia Commons

This Caribbean port of call offers duty-free shopping as well as the boozy temptations of the "Hip Strip," the downtown nightlife zone that's home to the Montego Bay Margaritaville outpost and its famous water slide, among other popular dance clubs.

For a classic Jamaican-style lunch, grab a cold Red Stripe and a crusty "pattie" filled with beef, chicken, vegetables, or cheese at one of Montego Bay's many restaurants. While Juici Patties and Tastee Patties are great chains that offer these dishes, many locals swear by Stanley's . Take a few Jamaican patties to go and head to Doctor's Cave Beach (mentioned above) for a seaside snack.

Go on a Haunted Tour of Rose Hall Great House

While tours of Rose Hall Great House are available during the day and at night , evening tours are best in order to set the mood for creepy tales about this haunted 1770 plantation house and its legendary dark past. Stop by the onsite pub, located in the estate's former dungeon, where slaves were once held as they awaited punishment by the cruel plantation owner's wife, Annee Palmer, known island-wide as the White Witch of Rose Hall.

Rose Hall is open for tours daily, while haunted nighttime tours of the estate happen Friday through Sunday evenings. For a go-big-or-go-home approach, consider the Annee's Escape package, which includes a guided tour of Rose Hall, championship golf at one or both of its courses, a shopping experience, Jamaican-style lunch, and special access to a private beach and pool. You can also tour the nearby Cinnamon Hill Great House , where Johnny Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, once lived.

Climb Aboard the Big Bamboo With Martha Brae River Rafting

For a romantic excursion, grab your beloved and float down the Martha Brae River on a bamboo raft. Tours with Jamaica Rafting include round-trip transfers from your hotel, a 75-minute guided trip down the river, a complimentary fruit drink upon arrival, and a visit to Miss Martha's Herb Garden.

Tours begin about 20 miles from Montego Bay in the Rafter's Village, a six-acre recreational facility complete with a souvenir shop, bar, lounge, restrooms, a picnic area, and a swimming pool. The three-mile journey down the Martha Brae River passes through thick jungles, skirts quiet Jamaican towns, and includes a stop where you can purchase handicrafts from local artisans.

Admire Jamaican Art at the Montego Bay Cultural Centre

The Montego Bay Cultural Centre is the fine-arts capital of western Jamaica and houses a gallery and museum containing paintings, sculptures, and other works of art celebrating the island's rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions.

Opened in 2014 in historic Sam Sharpe Square in the heart of the Montego Bay Craft Market, you'll find exhibits featuring ancient Jamaican arts and crafts as well as rotating displays on such topics as Rastafarian culture. It's open daily and makes a great rainy day activity or a nice break from the beach if you've soaked up just a little too much sun.

Savor the Flavor of an Appleton Estate Rum Tour

While Jamaica and Barbados continue to compete for the title of rum capital of the Caribbean, in Jamaica, the clear rum champ is Appleton Estate, producer of fine mixing rums and sublime sippers. You'll have to take a two-hour journey down back roads from Montego Bay to reach it, but once you're there, you'll be able to tour the distillery and sample a variety of rums. The 21-year is pricey but smooth and you can always sleep off your buzz on the ride back to your hotel.

Renovated and reopened in 2018, the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience includes complimentary welcome cocktails, a 75 to 90-minute guided tasting led by local rum experts, a movie about the rum industry in an on-site cinema, and an interactive tour through the Estate itself. Appleton Estate is open Thursday to Saturday. Reserve your tour in advance to avoid disappointment as these are quite popular.

Our adventure begins when you are picked up for a leisurely ride along Jamaica\'s scenic and picturesque north coast to Ocho Rios Mystic Mountain. Sky Explorer Embark the Sky Explorer chairlift for a picturesque 15-minute ride through Jamaica’s tropical canopy where several electrifying adventures await those hunting for the latest in excitement. Drive your very own bobsled down the mountain on the Jamaica Bobsled ride, Traverse the rainforest on the zip line adventure, glide down the waterslide to the infinity pool and dine to spectacular views at the R2 restaurant. Mystic Mountain offers a medley of different ways to experience the jungle that are guaranteed to get the whole family buzzing with pleasure. Bobsled Jamaica The most thrilling part of the visit, however, starts at the Railway Station, a picturesque replica of an early 1900s Jamaican railway station. Here, daredevils can climb into a custom designed Jamaican bobsled and try their hands at the tropical version of the Olympic sport of bobsledding. The track features a gravity-driven plunge of 3,280 feet with twists and turns. You control the speed of your descent with an in-sled handbrake, allowing for either a leisurely ride or a pulse quickening dive to the bottom (speeds up to 40 miles per hour). Once you come to a controlled stop, you and the bobsled are slowly raised back to the Railway Station through the forest on an elevated tramway, where you can opt to bobsled again, traverse the rainforest on the zip line adventure, visit the gift shop or glide down the water slide into the blue waters of an infinity pool which features breathtaking views. Zip Line Adventure Other Mystic Mountain escapades include the Rainforest Zip line Canopy Tour, another exploit definitely worth trying. This amazing combination of five zip lines allows ‘zippers’ to glide 170 meters through the jungle at a near vertical descent of 10 meters before landing on a wooden platform which doubles as the mid-station of the Rainforest Sky Explorer. -Zip line 1 = 90 meters -Zip line 2 = 120 meters -Zip line 3 = 30 meters -Zip line 4 = 61 meters -Zip line 5 = 170 meters -Vertical Descent = 10 meters -Suspension Bridge = 25 meters

On arrival, experience the pleasant, friendly “vibes” that influenced Bob Marley to write lyrics for songs such as “One Love” and “Three Little Birds”. It is not unusual to find his uncle & mother personally greeting visitors. Feel the spirit of the king of Reggae as your Rastafarian guide share little known insights into Bob Marley\'s musical career and childhood. He will guide you through the very same house that Bob lived as a young child. A place Bob Marley called home, a place he returned to whenever he needed time to himself, a place high in the mountains where he felt free. Stand on \"Mount Zion Rock\" where Bob used to meditate and rest his head on \"the pillow\" made famous in the song \"Talking Blues\". The Bob Marley tour ends with a visit to Bob\'s Mausoleum where he is now entombed. Take a moment to enjoy some of the local fruits and fresh air, before returning back to your cruise ship or resort. A \"must do\" for hard core Reggae fans!

Green Grotto Caves

The Green Grotto caves, also known as the Runaway Caves, are located just under 2 miles from the spot at which Christopher Columbus landed in 1494. The caves were a haven for runaway slaves in the 18th Century and between the two World Wars, were used by smugglers running arms to Cuba. The Grotto Caves were sought after as a hideout by the Spanish during the takeover of the island by the English in 1655. The Green Grotto caves feature a series of interconnected passageways and chambers, light holes, stalactites and stalagmites, as well as two lakes. Your guide will explain the nature of the tour and take you on a 45min walking tour through the caves. It is strongly recommended to wear proper footwear. The highlight of the Green Grotto Caves tour is the descend into the innermost cavern, where visitors will see a crystal-clear underground lake.

22 Things to do in Montego Bay

Written By: The Planet D

Updated On: December 18, 2023

The complete guide of things to do in Montego Bay

Montego Bay is the most popular destination in Jamaica . Perhaps in the entire Caribbean considering, it has one of the busiest airports on the island.

The Sangster International Airport welcomes visitors from around the world who are whisked off to their all-inclusive resorts . But it’s important to get out and explore Jamaica too, and we’ve rounded up the best things to do in Montego Bay plus popular day trips and excursions.

Table of Contents

Things to do in Montego Bay

After visiting Jamaica four times, we have personally tried these activities and can give honest opinions on how much fun they are and if they are worth doing. We’ve even put in a couple of suggestions for things to skip when visiting Jamaica. Book your airport transfers from Montego Bay Airport to any hotel island-wide.

Adventures in Montego Bay

We have broken down this article into parts from adventurous things to do in Montego Bay to more relaxed Montego Bay activities. If you are staying in Montego Bay, we also have a section on where to stay suggesting our favourite hotels in Montego Bay at the bottom of the post. And we have a couple of overrated suggestions. If you disagree, let us know, maybe we just didn’t love them, but others will.

1. Horseback Ride and Swim

montego bay excursions ride and swim

It’s one of the most unique excursions you’ll ever do in your life. Swimming with horses in the Caribbean Sea is a dream come true.

The tour starts with a 30-45 minute trail ride where you’ll go through farmland, jungle trails and end up at a beach for the obligatory photo stop. It’s then back to the corral via the beach and a chest-high ride through shallow waters before you change horses and get on the ride of your life.

Book a tour out to St. Anne and stop at Chukka Cove in Llandovery. It’s a 15-minute swim while on the bare back of a horse out to sea. Plus, everyone wears a floatation device and horses are excellent swimmers! Don’t worry, the horses like feeling the cool water on their coats and you are perfectly safe as at least 3 guides ride horses out there with you.

2. Mystic Mountain Bobsleigh

things to do in montego bay bobsledding

Most people will remember the movie Cool Runnings with John Candy telling the story of the first Jamaican Bobsled team at the Calgary Olympics in 1988. They have since gone on to world superstardom competing in the PyeongChang Olympics with sponsorship from Red Stripe.

You must visit Mystic Mountain to try bobsledding for yourself, It is one of the most unique tourist attractions in the Caribbean. Take a chairlift to the top of the mountain where you’ll arrive at the Olympic museum featuring the likes of Canadian favorite Donavon Baily, (who has Jamaican roots) Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt and of course the Jamaican Bobsled team.

You can stay for a bit, enjoy the pool or get directly on your bobsled and shoot down Mystic Mountain for a rip-roaring adventure in Jamaica.

3. Bamboo Rafting Martha Brae

what to do in montego bay bamboo rafting martha brae

There is nothing more relaxing or romantic than a bamboo rafting excursion down the Martha Brae River . The scene is beautiful as you float through old plantations and jungle scenery.

We didn’t have to do a thing, our friendly guide steers the bamboo raft through the maze of rocks and trees. There are bars, shops, and rope swings set up along the way, so bring some money along to enjoy a beer on the river. There is very little chance of getting wet, but a dry bag is a good idea should you want to be 100% sure to keep cameras and wallets dry.

You can book an excursion to the Martha Brae River with Get Your Guide – Free cancelation up to 24 hours in advance.

4. Zip Line Jamaica

what to do in montego bay zip line

There are zip lines and canopy tours in many parts of Jamaica, but most Montego Bay tours go to Montpellier for this excursion. This two-hour tour has five flights over the river and through trees as you learn about the flora and fauna. Be prepared to hike up ladders and stand on ledges but don’t worry, you are strapped in at all times.

5. River Tubing – Montpellier

river tubing montego bay

After ziplining, hop on a river tube and take a lazy tour. The guides are a blast and have many stories to tell. River tubing is similar to the bamboo rafting, except this time you are on inner tubes tied together as you float down the rushing water.

  • Note: It’s not a white water rafting excursion, this tour is laid back and relaxing.
  • Check out prices and bookings here

6. Sail to Negril

best montego bay excursions sail to negril

Set Sail to Negril where you’ll enjoy the scenic coast before hopping in for some snorkeling on the reef. Our trip started with snorkeling. The Montego Bay Marine Park is a protected area to preserve the marine life in the area and it’s a fun snorkel. We saw barracuda, trumpetfish, and my personal favorite, the pufferfish.

Once we finished looking at the marine life, we took a swim to Pirates Cave. Like Green Grotto Caves, it too was once a bar but today is a great spot for swimming. It was once a spot where pirates hid their treasures. Hence the name.

7. Rick’s Cafe

negril rick's cafe

Before heading back, you will pop over to Rick’s Cafe, one of the most popular bars on the island to watch the world-famous cliff divers. Tourists can jump from the cliffs if they like as well, but there have been several injuries over the years. We think it’s best to leave it to the professionals.

8. Braco Hike & Bike Tour

Things to do in Montego Bay: Braco Hike and Bike

The Tour starts with a hike up Braco Hill where you’ll learn about the flora and fauna of the island. The hike ends with spectacular views and cold towels to cool you off before setting down the mountain on bikes. You’ll pass through stables, and farmland before ending at the beach for a quick dip to cool off after all that exercise.

9. Dunns River Falls

what to do in montego bay waterfalls

Located near Ocho Rios, Dunns River Falls is one of the more popular Montego Bay day tours. Be prepared though, it is an hour and a half drive from the city. Dunns River Falls is a 180-meter high cascading waterfall that tourists love to walk up.

Many tours offer duo excursions like a trip to Dunns River Falls and then a stop at Green Grotto Caves. Or there is the Ride and Swim in the morning and then on to Dunns River Falls in the Afternoon.

10. YS Waterfalls

Things to do in Montego Bay: Visit a waterfall

YS Waterfalls is another place to visit but it is even farther at 2-hours away. We loved YS Waterfalls though as we hired a private guide which is highly recommended. We got a lot more out of it than we would have on our own.

11. ATV Tour

what to do in montego bay tours atv

A great excursion out of Montego Bay is the ATV Tour at Sandy Bay. We rode our four-wheelers up a steep climb for beautiful panoramic views of the coast.

Chukka Tours offers Dune Buggy and ATV tours. If you aren’t comfortable driving, you can always be a passenger on a Dune Buggy. We were pleased that our guides kept a fun and steady pace. There was enough thrill balanced with the right amount of safety.

Cultural Montego Bay Excursions

12.  green grotto caves.

montego bay excursions green grotto caves

Explore the beautiful cave system where James Bond’s Live and Let Die was filmed is one of the top Montego Bay Attractions. But it’s not just famous for the movie,  the Green Grotto Caves played a large role in Jamaican history. The 1.5 km-long cave system was a hiding place for both slaves and the Spanish in the 17th century. Runaway Cave was also once used as a nightclub in the 1990s, but today it is open strictly for tourists.

It’s an easy excursion taking you through paved pathways of Runaway Cave and Green Grotto. Be prepared to walk down 65 steps to an underground lake that was used for the submarine scene in James Bond. And watch out for bats! The caves are home to 10 million bats! Check out more at Green Grotto Caves website

13. Rose Hall Great House

Things to do in Montego-Bay: The Rose Hall Great House

Learn of the White Witch as you tour the most famous Great House of the Island, Rose Hall. Rose Hall was a former plantation house run by the evil, Ann Palmer who killed three of her husbands and countless slaves during her reign of terror. She was killed by her slave lover and visitors can see her sealed tomb on the grounds.

You can take a haunted night tour to really get a sense of the property as it is said that Ann Palmer still walks the grounds after the slaves put a curse on her body.

  • Book your tour here and get a free refund if canceled within 24 hours of departure.

14. Sam Sharpe Square

Sadly, slavery was a large part of the Island of Jamaica. But it was also the center of activism and an uprising that eventually lead to the end of Slavery. Sam Sharpe was an anti-slavery activist and hero of Jamaica. He was hanged for instigating the uprising, but just one week after his death, Britain started looking for ways to end slavery.

15. Greenwood Great House

Montego Bay excursions green wood great house

Rose Hall may be the most popular great house tour in Jamaica, but Green Wood Great House is a must . It is one of the few Great Houses that survived the Slave rebellion of 1831.

Although slave owners The Barrets were benevolent and spared from the uprising thus making the home one of the best-preserved historical locations in Jamaica. A guided tour will take you through rooms filled with original furniture and a very rare and priceless collection of antique instruments and books.

Greenwood has been locally owned by Bob and Ann Betton since 1976 and they still live in the house today!

16. Jerk Chicken at Scotchies

things to do in montego bay jerk chicken scotchies

Scotchies i s a local staple and when asking our guide if Jamaican’s still eat at Scotchies, he replied with a resounding yes! Chicken, pork, and fish are cooked over an open flame on a giant grill.

It’s the Scotch Bonnet Pepper Hot Sauce that makes Scotchies stand out giving your food a unique Jamaican Jerk flavor . All seating is outdoors on picnic tables under a canopy of trees and cabanas. Try a refreshing local drink here like Ting Soda or Coconut water.

17. The Hip Strip – Gloucester Avenue

Montego Bay's Hip Strip

For the party lover, the Hip Strip also known as Gloucester Avenue is the place to be. It’s where all the hot bars are in Montego Bay. There are several all-inclusive resorts in the area and there is a very busy tourist beach that costs $3 to enter. Shops line the street as visitors walk in their flip-flops from shops, bars, and nightclubs taking in the Jamaican Vibe.

Montego Bay Fun Things to Do

18. margaritaville.

things to do in montego bay margaritaville

Speaking of the Hip Strip, Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville is a staple bar and eatery in the Caribbean islands. A stop here is a must for cocktails and fun. The Margaritaville’s in Jamaica have jungle gyms in the water where adults can find their inner child and have a blast playing on the slides and trampolines.

19. Special Dinner off the Resort

Dinner of the resort things to do in montego bay

Half Moon’s Sugar Mill Restaurant is a great place to enjoy fine dining in Montego Bay. And it is the perfect evening to get off the resort and enjoy a different atmosphere and vibe. You don’t have to stay at the resort to enjoy their Sugar Mill Restaurant.

This beautiful setting has a working watermill set high on a hill. The outdoor open-air dining offers an intimate setting to celebrate the rich cuisine of Jamaica. They have an award-winning wine cellar that your server will be happy to offer suggestions for pairing with each course. If you are looking for a romantic setting, this is the place to do it!

20. Dead End Beach

Dead End Beach is the famous beach where airplanes land right over your head as the airport is right beside the beach! Located just a short walk from the more famous, Doctor’s Cave Beach, Dead End Beach is a more relaxed place to watch the sunset.

But be aware, there are some aggressive salespeople trying hard to sell you bracelets and necklaces. Just let them know you are here to enjoy the beach, not buy trinkets.

Off the Beaten Path Montego Bay

21. st. mary’s anglican church.

Montego Bay excursion: Visit St Mary's Anglican Church

It was while driving back from our river tubing excursion that we stopped at St. Marys Anglican Church. After stopping at a corner store for some banana chips, we drove down a narrow road to the St. Mary’s School historical area. The church dates back to 1847 and is a tranquil and beautiful scene.

Located on the Montpelier Estate, the church is located on the site of a notable slave uprising. Unlike the Green Wood Estate, Montpelier was not so kind to their slaves and this estate was burnt to the ground between 1831 and 1832.

What to Avoid in Montego Bay

22. doctor’s cave beach.

Avoid Doctors Cave Beach in Montego Bay excursions

A lot of travel guides will tell you to go to Doctor’s Beach. But if you don’t like crowds, don’t go. It’s overcrowded with tourists; especially on cruise ship days. I am sure it used to be beautiful, but now it is just filled with a sea of umbrellas and people drinking more than they should on a hot sunny day.

23. Luminous Lagoon

what to see in montego bay

We love experiencing Bioluminescence, but the Luminous Lagoon in Jamaica was a bit of a letdown. They use boat engines that race through the water stirring up the sea and killing the organisms. If they changed up the excursions here to either kayak or use an electric boat, we could recommend it because seeing bioluminescence is a magical experience.

It was once said that Jamaica had the best bioluminescence in the world, but it was quite dull on our tour, and we think it is because of all the boat engines going out and disrupting the ecosystem. That said, the people on our tour loved it and enjoyed seeing the blue and purple lights in the water. They felt quite satisfied even though we felt let down. I just feel that Jamaica should start using electric boats as they do in Grand Cayman to save the fragile bioluminescence.

Where To Stay In Montego Bay

Hyatt zilara rose hall.

When visiting Montego Bay, the resort can be as much a part of your vacation as the excursions themselves. So be sure to give yourself a few rest days to kick back and enjoy some fun in the sun. We’ve had the good fortune of staying in four different resorts in Montego Bay and they were all fantastic with plenty of water sports, amenities and excursions to keep you busy while exploring Montego Bay and its beaches. Here are our favourite Montego Bay hotels.

Things to do in Montego Bay

We stayed at the Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall and found it to be a great central location. It also had a lot of activities including SUP, kayaking, and sailing included in the booking. It was a resort that kept us busy inside with spa treatments, glamour nights, beach dinners, and lots of activities. There are plenty of water sports to be had from sailing, standup paddleboarding, and snorkeling included in your stay.

Hot Tips: Montego Bay Excursions

We use Get Your Guide to book excursions and tours around the world. If you want to book in advance, most of their tours have easy cancelation within 24 hours of the excursion.

  • When booking any Montego Bay Excursions be prepared to spend the entire day off of the resort.
  • One and a half hour drives can turn into 3-hour drives as you stop to pick up other patrons at their resorts. A lot of tours in Jamaica are very spread out so you will be on a bus for a while. But they are worth it.
  • Or better yet, rent a car for the day and set off to see the sights yourself.
  • Safety: We’ve always felt safe in Jamaica. We don’t recommend going into Trenchtown in Kingston in the middle of the night, but to make your way from one attraction to another is perfectly safe.
  • There are security checkpoints and after the crackdown by police, gangs are no longer running the streets of Montego Bay.

Book your airport transfers from Montego Bay Airport to any hotel island-wide.

We’ve tried most of the tourist attractions and day trips from swimming with horses to Bamboo Rafting, these are the tops.

Tourists should avoid staying only at their resort . Get out and explore and meet the locals .

Head to the Hip Strip for party life. Pier 1 is popular and so is Margaritaville .

Superb beaches, nightlife, all-inclusive resorts and Great Houses like Rose Hall are popular things to do.

There are so many things to do in Montego Bay, you’ll have to go back again and again.

Great list! I’m planning my trip to Montego Bay soon, so this is really helpful. Thanks for sharing!

Very helpful information. This will definitely assist my excursion planning. I did notice there was no mention of catamarans or sunset dinner sails.

I used to attend the Anglican Church. Didn’t care for its history and sure didn’t think it was touristy. If you are into boring Sunday sermons, this is your place.

This is a great list of places to visit in Jamaica! I will definitely add some of these excursions to my list for the next trip.

Jamaica is a beautiful island rich with culture so I hope you’re ready to explore it using my ultimate 5 day Itinerary. This is perfect for those of you who enjoy both luxury resort vibes + local cultural vibes.

How to Get Around

The 4 times my family or I have been to Jamaica, we always hire a driver. This is honestly the best thing to do since 1) in Jamaica you drive on the left side of the road so renting a car isn’t the best idea and 2) excursions can be hours away. We have a great driver Stanhope who I recommend booking with for your stay!

Stanhope – 1-876-486-2172 | Book via What’s App

Where to Stay

This guide is specific to staying in Montego Bay so here are some of the places I’ve stayed in:

  • Airbnb 1   -Pineapple Palms
  • Airbnb 2  – St.James Parish
  • All Inclusive Resort – Hyatt Ziva/Zilara Rose Hall

Airbnb Pineapple Palms

For this trip, my family and I spent half our time in an airbnb and the other half at our favorite all inclusive resort – Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall. This is my preferred way of traveling as I get to explore the island and also enjoy resort life. We typically do airbnb for the first half then resort the second half. Let’s get into the day to day itinerary!

Day 1 – Travel Day

Arrive and Get Settled

On travel day you typically want to rest, so that’s what we did. Once we arrived, Stanhope picked us up and took us to our airbnb. On the way we stopped to try the highly recommended KFC. Now I know what you’re thinking…”did you really travel to Jamaica to eat KFC?” YES I DID. Lol, ok I had the same thoughts but apparently it’s really good and better than the chains in the USA. We got 1 bucket of fried chicken and biscuits…I’ll give it a 7/10. Wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, but it was pretty good. I do recommend trying it out just to say you did it 😉

KFC’s in Montego Bay

  • Allice Eldemire Drive, Montego Bay, Jamaica
  • Whitter Village Ironshore, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Since you’re staying in an airbnb, you may want to stock up on some basic food items like breakfast and snacks. Here are some grocery stores you can count on.

Grocery Stores in Montego Bay

  • Progressive Foods Supermarket
  • Hi-Lo Food Stores

Restaurants in Montego Bay

In case KFC isn’t up your alley…here are some fave restaurants to try out in the area.

  • Tastee’s – The Best Patties
  • Scotchies – Jerk Chicken / Pork galore
  • Pier One on the Waterfront – really beautiful restaurant on the pier

After eating our late lunch/early dinner we played games, hung out at the pool and rested up for the next big day – Dunn’s River Falls.

Day 2 – Dunn’s River Falls

Our first full day was an excursion to Ocho Rios to climb Dunn’s River Falls. This was such a fun day and actually my second time being there. I was last at the falls in 2000 when I was just 4 years old! (Check out our then and now 20 yr difference pic below) On the way to the falls we stopped at Tastee’s to grab some patties for lunch – a must have when visiting Jamaica.

Noon – 3pm Dunn’s River Falls Location: Main St, Ocho Rios, Jamaica Hours: 8:30am – 4pm Price:  $3846 JMD Adults , $2615 JMD Kids | $25 USD Adults, $17 USD Kids

montego bay trips

Here are some notes & tips for visiting Dunn’s River Falls:

  • The falls are about 2 hours away from Montego Bay, so plan to leave early
  • The beginning of the falls actually begins down at the beach
  • Be sure to either bring water shoes or be prepared to purchase some on site ($10 USD)
  • Make sure you put on sunscreen and are hydrated before starting the climb
  • Guides are available to take you through the best path and I highly recommend doing this
  • It can be scary when climbing up – but it is safe and you will be okay 🙂 Just listen to your guides and have no fear!

4 – 6 pm Local Beach for Sunset Location: Flavours beach St Ann | Google Address Price: Free99

On our way back to the Montego Bay area, we stopped at a local beach front to watch the sunset. My mom and I walked along the shore and it was so beautiful. I don’t typically see local beach fronts that aren’t marketed for tourists so it was a nice change of scenery – very serene.

6pm – 7pm Dinner at Scotchies  Location:  G4CP+GWR, Montego Bay, Jamaica Hours: 11am – 7pm  Price: $

Before heading back to the airbnb we stopped at our fav Jerk chicken restaurant – Scotchies. This is definitely the place you’ve got to try at least 3 times before leaving lol. I recommend ordering jerk chicken, rice & peas, festival and breadfruit.

Day 3 – Negril Village

Our third day was the most packed and most fun. We started off with a yummy traditional breakfast trying red pea soup & peanut porridge at Stanhope’s family restaurant – Portions. Then headed off to Negril Village to hang at the beach, do bamboo rafting, and cliff jumping.

9am – 10am Traditional Breakfast  Location:  Portions | Airbnb Experience Link Hours: 11am – 7pm  Price: $

10:30am – noon Bamboo Rafting with Juicie’s Adventures Location: Lethe District, Hanover, Jamaica  IG Page: @Juicies_Adventures Price $60 USD pp

Bamboo rafting is a go to activity to partake in when you go to Jamaica. It was a really cool experience to sail down the river in a bamboo raft! This 1 hour excursion includes: trip down the river, limestone massage, coconut water, and sugar can – yum. This specific raft activity is from a more local business rather than the popular touristy one. I prefer this one as it was more authentic.

12:30pm – 4pm MargaritaVille Location: Norman Manley Blvd, Negril, Jamaica  Price: $FREE99 entry | $-$$ Food & Drinks (touristy prices)

Margaritaville is typically not my preferred choice of activity because of how touristy it is…BUT yall… it was a 10/10 experience. They had constant entertainment – music, fun games and free drinks (for the winners)! Great thing is that the chairs are free and the umbrellas are only $10 for rent. My favorite part was the Mango Spa – a little spa on the beach where you can get a massage for $1 per minute!! A beautiful price if you ask me. This was the best beach day.

montego bay trips

This is a family friendly place to go and you should def add it to your list for a bit of fun. Enjoy this photo of my beautiful family and I.

4pm – 7pm Rick’s Cafe Negril Location: W End Rd, Negril, Jamaica Price: $$ Food & Drinks (touristy prices)

Ricks Cafe in Negril is a super popular restaurant that is on top of a cliff overlooking a blue lagoon. The sunset views are immaculate and the music matches the vibe. Whenever you visit here, be sure to go right before sunset so you can fully enjoy the scenery. I will say, the food is super expensive and tbh not great so don’t waste money here. Rather, head back to Scotchies like we did before going to your airbnb.

Day 4 – Resort Day

Our last full day was going to be spent at my favorite All Inclusive resort – Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall. You will not regret splurging here – unlimited drinks, food, beach front, pool vibes and more.

All Day: Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall Location: Rose Hall Road, A1, MontegoBay, Jamaica Price: $250+ a night | 20K points via Hyatt or via Chase travel reward points (these prices can fluctuate throughout the year)

Here are some tips for staying in an All-Inclusive Resort

  • 💸𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀: You may think it’s backwards to tip at an all inclusive resort BUT I can tell you from experience it will enhance your stay. Tipping throughout your time —> staff giving you above & beyond service. ⁣
  • 🔝𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘂𝗽𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀: Closed mouths don’t get fed! When you check in, ask if there are any available upgrades. Maybe you want an ocean facing room? Just ask! Worst they can say is no.⁣
  • ⁣🗣𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲: I follow this rule wherever I travel but it’s especially nice when at a resort when often the guests only speak English. ⁣
  • If your flight leaves later than your checkout time, the lobby can hold your bags however long you need and you can still enjoy the resort.
  • Did you know Hyatt resorts usually offer free photography sessions? All you have to do is pay for the photos! My family and I did this for our Christmas photos (see below 😉 )
  • Some restaurants require reservations ahead of time for dinner – so when you check in go ahead and ask for the schedules and make your reservations.

List of Restaurants at Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall

  • ChoiceZ Buffet Restaurant: This offers a plethora of cuisine options everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • FuZion Asian Grill: Here you can have Hibachi show for dinner or order A la Carte from the menu. This was one of my favorite places because I loveee Asian cuisine. It’s only open for dinner.
  • Barefoot JerkZ AKA JerkHut: This is an outdoor walk up restaurant where you can get some good jerk chicken/pork, rice & peas and festival. Its right next to the pool too!
  • Blue Grill at CalypZo: This outdoor restaurant offers seafood, sandwiches, pizza, and more. They are open for Lunch and Dinner.
  • Di RoZa Italian Restaurant: They serve traditional Italian cuisine so all the pasta and pizza you can eat. Only open for dinner.

My favorite drinks to order

  • Pina Colada + Rum Floater
  • Miami Vice
  • Lemon Drop Martini
  • Strawberry Daiquiri

Day 5 – Last Day

On our last day, we spent the morning (8am – 3pm) at the resort since our flight was later in the evening. Tip: Book a later flight on your last day because you can still enjoy all of the perks of the hotel before you leave. Here is how I recommend you spend your last morning:

7am – 8am Have a gourmet breakfast at ChoiceZ  8am – 9am Do a yoga or aquatic class (scheduled by the hotel) 9am – 11am Enjoy the pool or beach and make sure to grab a drink too 😉  11am – noon Get dressed, pack your bags & drop them off at the lobby  Noon – 2pm Have lunch at your choice of restaurant! Afterwards head to the airport to fly home

I hope this itinerary will help you have an EPIC trip to Montego Bay!

Highly recommend this tour service. Everything was amazing from start to finish. Makes sure you wear closed toe shoes. If you zip-line you will need on a top that covers your stomach. Zip-line through the jungle you will need a sturdy stomach (it’s a bumpy/adventures ride), but you get to see Jamaican life & sunscreen (the mosquitos are VICIOUS). All of the tour guides were amazing!!! If you horseback ride in the water, be sure that you are under 230 lbs (they will confirm your weight by weighing you). Overall 10/10. These are yours that can last all day! Be ready to get up early for your shuttle.

I’ve been to Jamaica 2x once in 2019 for thanksgiving then again for my wedding in 2023. And every time Montego Bay Getaway has given me and my family a first class experience. 14 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Montego Bay

Written by Karen Hastings Updated Dec 26, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Montego Bay is packed with all the ingredients for a fun tropical vacation . Sun-soaked beaches, historic plantations, tropical gardens, and a lush countryside rippling with jungly peaks provide a peaceful escape from the urban grit of the downtown precinct.

Large resorts and all-inclusive hotels preside over the best beaches. Whether you're looking for a romantic destination for couples or a fun resort for families, you'll find the perfect place to stay.

Beach in Montego Bay

Things to do in Montego Bay ("MoBay") tick all the tropical boxes. Divers and snorkelers can explore the protected waters of the Montego Bay Marine Park, as well as the reefs fringing the beaches. Fishing, golfing, and guided river rides on bamboo rafts are also top things to add to your itinerary. One of the popular activities for families is ziplining through the jungle, or you can hike to waterfalls.

Festivals & Events : Montego Bay also offers a busy lineup of festivals, concerts, and sporting events. The Montego Bay Yacht Club hosts the bi-annual Pineapple Cup Montego Bay Race, and music lovers flock here each year for Reggae Sumfest.

Dunn's River Falls

One of Jamaica's most famous natural features, Dunn's River Falls tumble down 180 meters of smooth limestone terraces into the sea.

The falls lie about a 90-minute drive from Montego Bay, near Ocho Rios. They are a popular day trip, and you can combine a visit here with a tour of Nine Mile, the birthplace of legendary reggae musician Bob Marley.

The Jamaica Combo Tour: Dunn's River Falls and Bob Marley's Nine Mile tour packs plenty of fun into one full day. The tour begins with an informative guided visit to Nine Mile, where you can learn about Bob Marley's life as you wander through the village. After a traditional Jamaican lunch, hike to the top of Dunn's River Falls and cool off in its terraced pools. If you want to pack even more attractions into your day, you can add an optional night boat ride on the Luminous Lagoon .

Rose Hall Great House

Overlooking the ocean, about 20 minutes from Montego Bay, Rose Hall Great House is a restored plantation home built in 1770 . According to legend, Annie Palmer (the White Witch of Rose Hall) ruled here with cruelty and possessed black magic powers that would eventually seal her husband's grim fate.

Today, her home is decorated with furniture from the period, and you can step back in time on a guided tour of the house .

If you're looking to up the excitement factor, the spine-chilling candlelit night tour is one of the most unique things to do in Montego Bay for couples who don't mind a creepy trip. Some claim to have seen the ghost of the White Witch drifting through the Great House.

Address: Rose Hall Hwy, Rose Hall Estate, Rose Hall, Montego Bay

Doctor's Cave Beach

At Doctor's Cave Beach and Bathing Club , white sands fringe clear, calm waters that some believe are fed by mineral springs.

In the early 1920s, a famous British osteopath declared that the water had curative powers after swimming here — a claim that helped shape the future of Montego Bay by luring visitors from around the world. Hotels sprung up along the beach, and the area became a tourist hot spot.

Today, the beach is as popular as ever, and it's often crowded with cruise ship passengers, despite the admission charge. This is also a popular place for families and couples to go snorkeling in Montego Bay.

Amenities at the beach include changerooms, restaurants, and gift shops, and you can also rent beach equipment.

If you prefer to have less people sharing your Montego Bay beach experience, Cornwall Beach is right next door and also offers decent snorkeling and picture-perfect white sand and blue sea.

Address: Gloucester Ave, Montego Bay

YS Falls

Taking a day trip to YS Falls is one of the best things to do in Montego Bay. This natural wonderland is packed with fun things to do for families and romantic escapes for couples looking for a little R&R.

Enjoy a long soak in the natural fresh spring pools . At only four feet deep, it's easy to lounge in the main pool for hours, even if you're traveling with kids. The garden pool is a bit quieter and more secluded, a perfect place for an amorous interlude in a cabana.

The falls are the main reason people visit this beautiful point of interest. Seven tiers of cascades welcome visitors to bask in their tranquil beauty.

Hang from a rope swing , whoosh 40 feet above the falls on a zipline, or wander along the well-maintained paths through the jungle. You won't be at a loss for fun things to do at this exciting attraction. When hunger strikes, visit the on-site restaurant for a tasty bite.

On the YS Falls and Black River Safari Guided Tour , you can enjoy the refreshing cascades at the falls and enjoy a relaxing ride on a pontoon boat down the Black River. Transportation, hotel pickup and drop-off, and lunch are all included.

Martha Brae River Rafting

Rafting the Martha Brae River is one of the most peaceful and romantic things to do in Montego Bay. It's also a relaxing way to soak up the lush scenery of Jamaica's countryside.

The trip involves drifting down five kilometers of jungle-fringed river on bamboo rafts poled by local guides. Along the way, you can learn about the local flora and fauna. Some guides also serenade you with reggae songs.

Trips leave from the Martha Brae Rafting Village, about 32 kilometers from Montego Bay. Amenities here include picnic grounds, swimming pools, restrooms, souvenir shops, a lounge area, and a medicinal garden. It's a good idea to bring your swimsuit in case you want to take a dip before or during your rafting adventure.

Sign up for the Private Martha Brae River Bamboo Rafting Tour , and a driver will pick you up at your Montego Bay hotel and take you to the launching point in an air-conditioned vehicle. Then, you'll enjoy a private float down the river aboard a 50-foot raft.

River tubing is another fun way to float Jamaica's jungle rivers. From Montego Bay, these trips usually take place on the Great River and include an exhilarating chance to shoot some rapids.

The Hip Strip: Gloucester Avenue

Also known as the "Hip Strip," Gloucester Avenue is a famous street near Doctor's Cave Beach . It's packed with shops, cafés, and entertainment venues, and most days, it heaves with cruise ship passengers.

This is a popular place for tourists to go shopping in Montego Bay — you'll find all the usual souvenirs here. If you're planning on browsing, be prepared to deal with persistent vendors.

Besides a colorful array of kitschy knickknacks and T-shirt shops, you'll also find art galleries and cafés along this bustling strip, and this is a popular stop on the Jamaica nightlife circuit.

Mayfield Falls is a beauty. While not technically in Montego Bay, the 80-minute-long journey to this Westmoreland attraction is more than worth your time.

While the falls here aren't massive, they are small, gorgeous, and easy to explore, not to mention the perfect size for splashing in and walking through or behind. Here, you can visit 21 natural pools and underwater caves.

Plus, Mayfield Falls is one of the only places where tourists can scramble up, over, and around some of Jamaica's best waterfalls , and enjoy "showering" and being massaged under the tumbling cascades.

You can make a visit here even easier by booking the Original Mayfield Falls Tour . This full-day excursion includes transport to and from Mayfield Falls, as well as entrance fees and a guided tour.

Insider's tip: Pack a towel and wear water shoes as the stones are quite slippery—they are covered in water, after all. Also, you'll want to have some cash on hand, as there's a café on-site and an opportunity to rent water shoes and a locker.

Cinnamon Hill Golf Course

Playing golf at the Cinnamon Hill Golf Course gives tourists the coveted experience of feeling the soft ocean breeze tickling their faces while putting for par. One moment, you'll be staring out at stunning Caribbean Sea views. Another, you'll be hitting your way through the trees inland. There's even a waterfall to enjoy.

This 18-hole course is located at Rose Hall. It's a par-72 designed to challenge the most avid of golfers. There are four sets of tees, so everyone from junior to senior golfers can enjoy a round or two.

The front nine are wide open, while the back nine are tighter and peppered with lush vegetation. You can see the sea from at least 17 of the holes, so bring a camera. The second tee reaches towards the historic Rose Hall Great House, and there's also an ancient aqueduct on-site.

Didn't pack clubs? No worries. You can rent them, and golf shoes, right here.

Croydon Plantation

Tucked in the foothills of the Catadupa Mountains, Croydon Plantation is a 132-acre working farm with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.

The plantation's main crops are coffee, pineapples, plantains, and citrus, and they also produce honey. During the tour, you can learn about the different crops, sample the produce, and sip drinks made from the plantation's fresh fruit as you stroll around the beautiful grounds.

After your tour, enjoy a barbecue lunch topped off with Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee. This is a perfect spot for a couples' getaway.

Ziplining in Jamaica

Looking for an adrenaline rush? Sign up for an exhilarating ziplining experience. Flying through Jamaica's jungle canopies also gives you a unique perspective of this tropical island, and it's a fun thing to do for families with older kids.

If you want to pack even more adventure into your day, consider the Chukka Zipline, River Tubing, and ATV Safari Adventure Combo from Montego Bay . On this half-day tour, you'll ride ATVs on rugged trails through a historic estate, soar through the jungle canopy on a zipline, and navigate rapids on a Great River tubing adventure. Hotel pickup and drop-off and a traditional Jamaican lunch are included.

Rocklands Bird Sanctuary

If you're a birder, nature lover, or photography enthusiast, don't miss Rocklands Bird Sanctuary. At this delightful family-run attraction, you can view, photograph, and hand-feed exotic and endemic birds.

Upon arrival, guests are provided with a bottle of nectar, bird seed, and a comfortable place to sit. Almost instantly, hummingbirds descend to drink from the bottles and perch on your finger, and other birds flock to eat the seed.

Jamaican orioles and banaquits are some of the many species of birds you can see here, and don't forget to look for Jamaica's national bird, the regal long-tailed doctor bird.

Accessed down a rugged, twisting road, Rocklands lies about a 30-minute drive away from downtown Montego Bay. But you can make it easy by booking a Round-trip shuttle to Rockland Bird Sanctuary . They'll pick you up and drop you off directly at your hotel.

Address: Rocklands Road, Wiltshire, Jamaica

Hummingbird feeding from tropical blooms in Montego Bay

Clinging to a hillside high in the mountains, with spectacular views over Montego Bay, Ahhh... Ras Natango Gallery and Garden is an eco-tourism gem.

This outdoor gallery and botanic garden is the labor of love of the Williams family, who strive to recycle and repurpose everything on the property and love to share their garden and environmental ethics with visitors on educational tours.

Orchids, bromeliads, bougainvillea, ginger, fruit trees, and other tropical plants flourish in the terraced rock gardens, and the garden is also a haven for birds , with more than 18 species spotted on the grounds, including many hummingbirds. Art classes are also available.

Entrance includes a free shuttle from Montego Bay about 15 minutes away, and lunch is available for an extra fee. This is also a favorite spot to buy unique, locally-made artwork and souvenirs.

Address: 1 Ras Natango Way, Camrose District

Greenwood Great House | Rostasedlacek / Shutterstock.com

If you're interested in soaking up a fascinating slice of Jamaican history, head to the Greenwood Great House for a guided tour.

Nestled in the hills a few miles off the highway, it was once owned by the family of famous English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The antique-filled home is more than 200 years old and is one of the best-preserved great houses in Jamaica .

Highlights of a tour include the well-maintained antique furniture; a library of rare books; and a fascinating collection of musical instruments, including a rosewood piano, barrel organ, and music box. Almost stealing the show, however, are the panoramic vistas of the surrounding countryside.

Sam Sharpe Square

The central feature of Montego Bay, Sam Sharpe Square offers a gritty slice of important Jamaican history.

It commemorates Sharpe, a slave and local Baptist deacon who advocated passive resistance to force the planters to comply with emancipation. Sharpe was hanged in what was then Charles Square. After independence, Sam Sharpe was made a National Hero, and the square was named in his honor. Today, the square is packed with street vendors and traffic, but it's a key place to visit on most sightseeing tours.

Also in the square, the Cage was built in 1806 as an overnight jail for runaway slaves, disorderly seamen, and vagrants.

Two blocks east of the square, lies Burchell Memorial Baptist Church, established in 1824, where Samuel Sharpe was a deacon. His remains are buried in the vault.

For first-time visitors to Montego Bay, the best place to stay for seeing all the sights is along the main beach area near Doctor's Cave Beach. Gloucester Avenue, the "Hip Strip," is also near here, with its art galleries, restaurants, and shops. For those seeking a little more seclusion, the stretches of beach northeast and south of town are home to most of the exclusive, upscale resorts. Here are some highly rated hotels in these areas:

Luxury Hotels:

  • Nestled in a 400-acre private estate, about 13 minutes' drive northeast of the Hip Strip, is the family-friendly Half Moon . The resort encompasses impressive recreational facilities, including a private beach, an award-winning spa, equestrian center, tennis and squash courts, a children's playground, and a golf course.
  • Catering to couples, Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort and Private Island is a romantic all-inclusive option with a British bent and a Georgian-style great house, while Secrets Wild Orchid Montego Bay presides over a peninsula south of town with more than a mile of private beach. Both of these latter resorts lie about 12 minutes by car to the "Hip Strip."

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • Less than 10 minutes from the airport, the beachfront Holiday Inn Resort Montego Bay is a great mid-range option with its all-inclusive rates, spa, volleyball courts, and sprawling outdoor swimming pools.
  • Within walking distance of Doctor's Cave Beach, Royal Decameron Montego Beach is popular for its central location, great staff, and good-value all-inclusive rates.
  • Also near Doctor's Cave Beach, SeaGarden Beach Resort is a family-run all-inclusive resort that offers great value for money, as well as an authentic Jamaican vibe.

Budget Hotels:

  • A short walk to town and Doctor's Cave Beach, about two kilometers from the airport, Toby's Resort is a value-packed budget option, with two pools, a restaurant, and free Wi-Fi.
  • Another popular value option is Deja Resort on the Hip Strip. Bright rooms, a lovely pool, and easy access to Doctor's Cave Beach are highlights.
  • Full-Day Tour : An adventurous way to explore more of the island is by booking a tour of the Blue Hole, Secret Falls, and Dunn's River Falls . Tourists are picked up from their hotels and taken to these three top attractions, with slowdowns to take photos at other popular spots (i.e. the Rose Hall Great House) along the way. At the Blue Hole, you'll hike through the jungle to Secret Falls. At Dunn's River Falls, you'll be able to trek up the falls and swim in the natural pools before enjoying a delicious lunch.

"haven’t found any that allow booking for just one person. "

"its long so it doesn’t seem practicable for a day trip."

For the drive only I would plan on it taking 3 1/2 hr. or a bit more depending on where you stay in KIngston and how the traffic is.

Along the way I would stop at Dunn's River Falls and Nine Mile, the birth place/grave of Bob Marley.

9 of the best things to do in Jamaica

J amaica may best known by tourists for its beach resorts and white sand beaches, but this beautiful Caribbean island offers so much more for the intrepid traveller.

The island’s wealth of natural sights is perhaps its most remarkable feature, with the soft sands and azure waters of its beaches complemented by unique array of inland waterfalls like Dunn’s River Falls, the towering summit of Blue Mountain Peak and the rainforest-fringed waters of the Martha Brae River.

The towns and cities are mesmerising too. The capital, Kingston, acts as the beating heart of the country and its cultural centre, while seaside towns like Ocho Rios or the famed Montego Bay provide a dose of the laid-back Caribbean vibe that Jamaica is renowned for.

In between is a glut of outdoor adventures, cultural activities and Jamaican jewels to discover, from the wonders of Reggae to Jamaica’s culinary exports. Below, we’ve rounded up the best things to do in Jamaica to help you make the most of your visit.

Take a tour of the capital

As the capital, Kingston is the ‘centre’ of Jamaica and the cultural heart of the country. It is a stark contrast to the relaxed resorts and tranquil coastline of much of the rest of Jamaica, but its lively energy has provided much of what has made modern Jamaica great, from arts and music to a diverse culinary scene.

Reggae fans will want to start by exploring the life of one of Jamaica’s sons at the Bob Marley Museum (where the artist lived from 1975), while anyone wanting to cover more of Jamaican art and culture should carry on to the National Gallery of Jamaica – showcasing everything from indigenous carvings to 18th-century British works – before finishing at the Devon House estate, home to gardens and a collection of antiques once belonging to George Stiebel, the country’s first Black millionaire.

Other historical sites include the 17th-century Fort Charles and Liberty Halls, the headquarters of one of the founders of Pan-Africanism, Marcus Garvey.

Kingston has earned itself a reputation for high levels of crime, so make sure you plan any trip to the city carefully and avoid areas that are known to be dangerous.

Visit Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios is one of several seaside resort towns on the island. While Montego Bay and Negril are worth visiting, Ocho Rios is a great place to spend a couple of nights due to the range of interesting sites nearby, as well as a more relaxed, less high-end resort vibe than that of ‘MoBay’.

Dunn’s River Falls, the Blue Hole and Konoko Falls (more on them below) are all within 30 minutes’ drive, while locals and tourists alike mix at some ofJamaica’s best beaches, including Mahogany Beach, Fisherman’s Beach and Ocho Rios Bay. There’s plenty of character to the town itself too though, from the stalls of the Craft Market or Island Village to the tropical gardens of Shaw Park. The Clock Tower marks the centre of the city, and the surrounding area, filled with Caribbean architecture, is lively both day and night.

See the best waterfalls

Jamaica has a wealth of waterfalls to explore, and Dunn’s River Falls is undeniably the most popular for tourists. They lie around two miles from Ocho Rios, and remain an exceptionally beautiful natural wonder despite the large number of visitors. The falls themselves are idyllic; they stand at 180 metres tall and consist of giant limestone rocks covered with several cascades and surrounded by tropical rainforest. Visitors can climb to the top, but it gets busy so aim to visit outside of peak times.

Konoko Falls is another, less grandiose option near Ocho Rios, with a similarly picturesque setting and far fewer crowds. On the east coast, Reach Falls is one of the more remote options, where swimming in emerald pools and hiking up to Mandingo Cave are both popular. Mayfield Falls are a great option for those looking to swim among achingly beautiful surroundings, as are the waters of the Ocho Rios Blue Hole, where a smaller waterfall complements the turquoise waters below.

Explore the lagoons

The Blue Lagoon and Luminous Lagoon are two of Jamaica’s most striking natural sites, both situated on the northern coast and sitting along different points of the Martha Brae River.

The former lies in the east, where the waters of the Martha Brae funnel through to those of the Caribbean Sea. The lagoon is 55 metres deep and changes colour regularly – between shades of blue, emerald and turquoise – thanks to the mixing of freshwater and seawater. It lies in a protected cove among cliffs and dense greenery, and offers both wild swimming and boat tour opportunities.

The Luminous Lagoon sits further west, not far from Falmouth, and was once an important location for ships arriving to Jamaica. Though surrounded more by buildings than rainforest, this lagoon has become famous due to the microorganisms called dinoflagellates that populate it. When disturbed, they produce a glowing light that makes the lagoon a striking sight (access is only via boat tours, but you can swim as part of the tour).

Hit the beach

Like any Caribbean island, Jamaica is home to a slew of pristine beaches, where white sands are fringed by palm trees and lapped by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. These beaches range from beautiful secluded spots to much-loved resort areas like Montego Bay.

For something a little more private, opt for Frenchman’s Cove, Boston Bay, Lime Cay or Parrottee Beach. Areas like Half Moon Beach, Seven Mile and James Bond Beach are are little busier – with more restaurants and activities – while some of the most popular beaches on the island include Doctor’s Cave, Winnifred Beach and Reggae Beach. Ocho Rios Bay and Puerto Seco are the most popular resort beaches.

Explore Montego Bay

Montego Bay has formed a reputation as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Jamaica, offering luxurious accommodation options, stretches of fine white sands, lively nightlife and activities that range from water sports to hiking, golfing and enjoying the array of bars and restaurants. In reality, the city is split into two parts – the charming, if sometimes chaotic, local life of the city proper and the pristine beaches and fancy hotels of the touristy suburbs (and Ironshore in particular).

In the city, you can discover Jamaican history and culture, from the National Museum West to the Montego Bay Cultural Centre, as well as landmarks like the impressive St James Parish Church and bustling Sam Sharpe Square (slightly outside the city also lies the Indigenous Rastafarian Village). On the coast, visitors can spend days relaxing on beaches like Doctor’s Cave, enjoying a game of golf at Cinnamon Hill, hiking and rafting at Montpelier Jungle Outpost, or whiling away the afternoons and evenings with cocktails on the Hip Strip.

Like Kingston, some aresa of Montego Bay are known to be dangerous, so plan a city trip carefully and avoid any known crime spots.

Take a trip on a bamboo raft

Jamaica’s answer to the gondola trips of Venice is an even more relaxing affair. These trips take place on long bamboo rafts, with two or three people at a time taken along the waters of the Rio Grande or Martha Brae River by a local guide, floating through thick rainforest and green tunnels before stopping off for optional wild swims.

Tours set off from ‘Rafter’s Village’, a horseshoe-shaped island near the town of Falmouth on the northern coast, and start from around $99 USD (£77) for a two-person trip.

Try some local delicacies

Like many other Caribbean islands, Jamaica has taken influences from several countries and regions to produce the cuisine that is seen on the island today. African, Asian and European touches have mixed with native ingredients (and those introduced from elsewhere) to produce a culinary scene as varied and unique as anywhere in the region.

Popular dishes on the island include curry goat, ackee and saltfish (a local fruit prepared with salted codfish) and variations of jerk pork (slow-cooked pork marinated in chilies, thyme, allspice and garlic), with street food dishes such as beef patties (almost like a Jamaican version of Cornish pasties) and fried dumplings also found throughout the country, from street food vendors to restaurants. Rum is the alcoholic drink of choice here, and some of the best can be sampled with a tour of the Hampden Great House Estate.

Ascend Blue Mountain Peak

Blue Mountain Peak is Jamaica’s tallest mountain, standing at an impressive 2,256 metres tall. The ‘classic’ trail to the summit covers almost six miles over the course of around four hours – though some routes cover up to 10 miles – with many choosing to set off in the night to catch the sunrise at around 6am (a stay at Whitfield Hall allows you a later start time). Along the way you’ll pass through dense jungle vegetation that turns to pine trees and evergreens as the altitude increases, eventually giving way to a clear view the misty hills as the sun comes up.
