Cruise ship repels pirate attack

A cruise ship has come under attack from Somali pirates off the coast of Oman. A security team on board Azamara Journey is reported to have fired flares to ward off threatening approaches from two boats, which eventually turned away. The incident happened about 15 nautical miles off the coast of the island of Masirah, in the Arabian Sea, on the edge of the area patrolled by an international armada of naval protection vessels. Two skiffs, a popular choice of vessel for pirates operating in the region, were seen approaching Journey on Friday. Each was carrying three or four men. One boat veered away when two flares were fired towards it. A third flare was fired from the stern of the cruise ship at the second boat, which also aborted its approach, according to a report from monitoring organisation OceanusLive , which says the cruise ship was approached “in an aggressive manner.”. One of the 650 passengers on board Journey is also reported to have posted details of the incident on Facebook. Cynthia Martinez, director of Global Corporate Communications for Azamara’s parent company Royal Caribbean Cruises, said: “The captain took precautionary measures, which included asking that guests move to the interior areas of the ship, as well as evasive manoeuvres.” She added that ships take “certain precautions and additional preparations, including extra lookouts in place around the ship,” when sailing near the Gulf of Aden. “Our crew members, security teams and procedures are capable of responding to a wide variety of challenges, and we are always well-prepared.” Azamara Journey left Athens on November 14 and is due to reach Mumbai on Wednesday. After passing through the Suez Canal, the ship had seven straight days at sea – through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden – before arriving at Muscat, Oman, on Saturday.

i was on the azamara journey when the pirates came to attack but fortunately for us we had excellent security on board and felt totally safe.

Hi. I too was on board and having been through a drill a few days prior to the incident felt really safe and confident in the Captain,Crew and Security Staff on board. All the passengers were very calm, and the incident passed, without any problems. A Big Thank you all who kept us safe. Can’t wait to sail with Azamara Again. P.S. I just saw that pirates were trailing the Journey; but they gave up after it took evasive measures. Looking forward to hearing from passengers.

I found this written Monday, Nov 26 2012. But it was not an Azamara ship from this report.

I also believe that there was an attempted pirate attack on Quest earlier this year when making her way back from Asia, but she put on enough speed to outrun them after firing shots in the air. With the fire just before that it must have been the worst contract for Captain Karlsson.

That's an old story from 2005. Coincidentally I think that was the cruise that Azamara CD Tony Markey was on.

Glad they were able to outrun or out m aneuver them!

Here is an article on CC about the Journey. http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=5093

Pirates are best shot at the first hint of real trouble. They understand guns, and they understand weakness. As I recall, many of the security people on board our Eastern Med. cruise in 2010 were Israeli. I wonder why that was?

Thanks for the link. I'm doing the trip on Journey when she comes back from Mumbai next May. Could be exciting!

Christine Frances, I don't have a clue as to your family dynamics, but it just might be a good investment on your part, if you play your cards right. I hear Somalia is lovely this time of year.

Hello Azamara Followers -

As a follow-up to the story that appeared in the "news" section on Cruise Critic, "Pirates Trail Cruise Ship Near Oman," below is an official report about the situation:

On November 23, 2012, while sailing off the coast of Oman, Azamara Journey observed several small boats in the distance quickly approaching the ship. In an abundance of caution, the Captain took precautionary measures, which included asking that guests outside move to the interior areas of the ship, as well as evasive maneuvers. Within 15 minutes, the small boats were no longer approaching. Therefore, the Captain resumed normal activities onboard and the Azamara Journey proceeded on her scheduled voyage.

Our company closely monitors piracy activity in the Gulf of Aden and surrounding areas, and works with law enforcement, intelligence and military organizations to ensure we are well prepared for our sailings. During our passage through the Gulf of Aden, our ships take certain precautions and additional preparations, including extra lookouts in place around the ship.

The safety of our guests is our highest priority. Our crew members, security teams and procedures are capable of responding to a wide variety of challenges, and we are always well prepared for our passages through the Gulf of Aden.

Azamara Journey departed from Athens (Piraeus), on November 14, and will arrive to Mumbai (Bombay), on November 29. During the sailing, Azamara Journey will make port calls to Rhodes, Greece; Muscat, Oman; and Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.

I'm sure that you'll find this report re-assuring.

Best regards,

When we were on Journey in October, Captain Jason indicated they were already going through tabletop exercises to train for this trip and that extra personnel would be used to support security though he did not give and we did not ask for detail

Clearly they had an excellent well trained Captain and team aboard

Glad they are all safe and I have no worries about doing that voyage this time next year

This bogus website has made the rounds but there is actually a funnier one but can't find it at the moment! DH figured this would work as he is still upset that they no longer allow you to shoot skeet off the fantail and he thought this might be just as much fun:D:D

I checked the date on the top of the news page and it said 2012. But I guess they just post old news. Thanks for letting me know about it being old.

Yes and crew members are put on pirate watch.

Gl ad to hear Azamara Journey's 'Operation Safe Haven' worked well. We have just returned from a similar cruise (Barcelona to Dubai) on Celebrity Solstice. Thankfully we didn't encounter any trouble and Safe Haven was never needed. I felt very safe, especially having 5 ex Royal Marines - and their weapons - on board. I think RCCL should be praised for the way they have dealt with this unwelcome situation. I hope other cruise lines are doing the same.

we were told during the Quest Bridge Tour 2 years ago (Dubai-Singapore-HK) that weapons were definitely not carried aboard to repel pirates, but many and varied other methods and devices employed in their place. Is this true - or do security staff actually have access to guns? I remember we had extra lookouts on duty from Dubai to Mumbai, and even a bit beyond, as well as a couple of days of 'black-out' sailing from Dubai. I have heard of other ships having naval escorts and travelling in convoy in this region. Does this still occur? Would love to do Singapore to the Med, but pirates are a bit of a worry!! Thanks.

Do the R-class ships Azamara sail have those sonic blasters?

Having just left the Journey this morning we are able to confirm Helen's report. We were sitting at the open deck at windows cafe when we saw a flare fired from the ship we did see one of the motor boats but within seconds Captain Jason called "safe haven" and as we were fully prepared for this via talks given by the Captain and exercise drill, we all went to the nearest inside corridors.

Helen forgot to mention that as a number of us we were sitting along deck eight corridor, it was Helen who decided to strike up a sing song - good moral boost Helen.

We do have to commend Captain Jason, his officers and crew who did a fantastic job. His calm, confident and efficent manner certainly carries throughout the whole ship. He starts his vacation soon and I'm sure we all wish him a great one.

We were on the Journey and also praise the Captain and all the crew for excellent handling of the entire episode. I was told that after the Suez transit, arms were loaded onto the ship (passengers actually saw them!). It was reassuring. When I spoke to Captain Jason afterwards, he said that the 3 boats looked suspicious as they were too far from land, they had massive engines for the size of boats, they were Somalian type skiffs, they had no fishing equipment, and although they did not appear to have visible weapons, some men appeared crouched. They were looking to see whether we were a good target and when 3 flares were fired and they noticed that we were "well equipped", they left. Pirate watch was 24 hours for over a week and the ship was definitely ready for anything. Well done, Azamara.

Just received this email relating to our October Athens to Dubai cruise on Pursuit, it’s only one port change so the plan is still to transit the Red Sea.

Yes, saw that and just posted about it on the Roll Call.

I'm surprised they haven't taken the opportunity to make a much more radical change. As I opened the email, I expected to see Dubai as an end destination had become the Canaries (or similar).

We haven't booked flights or any pre- or post-cruise accommodation, as I'm still of the opinion it won't happen.

As a result, we will be removing the port of Elait from your itinerary and replacing it with the stunning destination of Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.   While we understand that changes to travel plans can sometimes be inconvenient, please know that your safety remains our top priority. We apologize for any disruption this adjustment may cause to your travel arrangements.   Sharm El Sheikh is a breathtaking coastal city renowned for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and stunning beaches. Additionally, the city offers opportunities for cultural exploration, with historic sites such as the Old Market and the Al Mustafa Mosque waiting to be discovered.   If you have already booked shore excursions through Azamara to the port of Elait, rest assured that any payments made will be refunded to the original form of payment.   We sincerely appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we navigate these changes. Our team is committed to ensuring that your experience aboard the Azamara Pursuit is nothing short of exceptional, and we look forward to welcoming you on board for a memorable journey.   Should you have any questions or need guidance of what you can explore in any destination please contact your Travel Advisor or   click here   for your local Azamara call center number.    Sincerely, AZAMARA ®   The revised Itinerary can be viewed below.

The rebels in Yemen have now stated that US, British and Israeli ships are "banned" in the Red Sea. Recent attacks demonstrate they still have the capacity to damage ships. The conflict in Gaza seems likely to continue for some time. Clearly this is a really difficult time for cruise ship companies but the longer they delay what seems to be an inevatible decision to re route around Africa the less options they and their passengers will have.

We are booked on Azamara Journey Singapore to Athens May 3 and the only comment has been we are monitoring the situation. Most cruise lines have cancelled cruise through the Red Sea for March, April and May. Hopefully your October cruise can go ahead and peace resumes in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, United and Delta are resuming flights to Israel.  Don't know what this means for Red Sea cruises, but it is the first positive note I've heard since last October.

Viking are registrered in Norway. Maybe they will wait and see if they can get away with that.

With over 850 Ameriican passengers in each ship can you imagine  the class action if Viking get the call wrong

I am sot seeing the Huthis as being choosy at who they attack. The last 'hit' may have been registered in the UK, but was Lebanese owned. I wonder how well that went down (pun intended)? As far as they are concerned, all of 'The West' is the enemy. I can't see any ship wanting to play against those odds.

Interesting....Seabourn Sojourn has announced termination of that identical (which was the final) leg i.e. Singapore to Athens a day earlier (2nd May), on their ATW cruise. The only reason we know this is because the ship will then transit with crew only, around Africa to Athens to recommence the scheduled cruises from Athens and we have just booked the Athens to Barcelona cruise 5 June.

This is a replacement for the cancelled Oceania Insignia cruise, Barcelona to Southampton, which was part of the ATW cruise which can no longer transit the Red Sea area. All being well, this will be a new cruiseline experience for us.

Thanks

We supposedly will here something on the Onward in the next few days.

roberts2005

Hope as well.   Schedule, on Onward,  to depart June 9th from Barcelona.

Booked on the May 3 Singapore to Athens cruise. I sent Azamara an email seeking clarity about what options they were considering given the fact that most other cruise lines have made the decision to change itineraries and avoid the Red Sea. I received a reply today, standard response, closely monitoring situation will inform customers if there is any itinerary change. Disappointing response, as a passenger I have to book connecting flights, manage insurance, organize visas etc and I am running out of time to do these things. I have enjoyed my three cruises on Azamara very much but their lack of decisiveness in this situation is annoying, The sooner they accept that the Red Sea is not likely to be a safe place for a cruise ship in May the more likely they are to find an alternative itinerary which will appeal to the maximum number of passengers

Here here!!!  We have already booked flights to Singapore and back to the UK from Athens. Having to change these at short notice could be very costly and Azamara are not being fair to their loyal customers.

More complications for cruise lines trying to re-route ships away from the Red Sea as a stop in Cape Town would probably be required for re provisioning. https://news.sky.com/story/norwegian-cruise-ship-blocked-from-docking-in-mauritius-over-health-risks-13081514

Reports elsewhere are saying it’s suspected as being cholera.

There were reports on CC of passengers on Pursuit suffering stomach problems during its South African season as well.

Now being reported as Gastroenteritis but it’s still another worry for we could all do without.

We are booked on Pursuit for the October Red Sea transit so we are watching to see what happens with Onward & Journey with interest.

Not looking good for Norwegian. However, someone has made a decision in advance.

As regards Pursuit in October I fear the easiest decision is to cancel our 18 night Athens to Dubai cruise and the following Dubai R/T and running empty from Athens to Dubai around the Cape to pick up the following itinerary.

There bigger problem is Onward with 200 World cruise passengers onboard expecting a reasonable alternative itinerary.

Agreed. If they were to cancel now I would consider rebooking something else with Azamara.

Leave it too late and I`ll be looking at other alternatives as , most likely, other Azamara cruises round that time could be fully occupied.

My thoughts are that they are leaving the inevitable decisions to as late as possible to retain deposits made and hoping that people will cancel and lose their non refundable deposit.

A case of who will blink first....

In addition, they may be looking at cancellations for those who have nothing to lose up to the final payment date before cancelling .

If enough of this category cancel, surely it's a no go?

I`ve already booked flights for this cruise....It`s a good one that I did in 2022...I`m unsettled..

Aboard the luxurious Azamara Quest, a pirate scare adds to the intrigue

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

My wife, Laurel, and I, jet-lagged, headed to our balcony stateroom on the Azamara Quest to let the rhythmic wash of the hull through the Aegean Sea lull us to sleep. In the morning, we found a letter from the ship’s captain, José Vilarinho, slipped under our door. “I am writing,” it began, “with important information regarding our passage through the Gulf of Aden.”

We knew the gulf was the infamous hunting ground of Somalian pirates and that cruise ships — most notably the Seabourn Spirit in 2005 and Oceania’s Nautica in 2008 — had been approached. Though these events were years ago, attacks on cargo ships have continued and, in fact, three vessels were approached during the days we were in the gulf. Though we’ve made dozens of cruises, we had never experienced anything like this.

FULL COVERAGE: Cruise reviews, deals and news

The letter outlined precautions that would last for five days. The ship would be darkened at night to improve visibility for the lookouts: crew volunteers who were posted around the clock during the passage through the Gulf of Aden. Exterior deck lights would be doused and curtains closed in public rooms and staterooms. If the words “Operation Safe Haven” were broadcast over the public address system, passengers would move to the interior of the ship and follow crew instructions. We were more intrigued than alarmed.

Cruising as usual

Our mid-October departure from Piraeus, Greece, on the 694-passenger Quest had been picture-perfect and sunset-tinted, with ferries shuttling in and out as lights twinkled on in Athens’ sprawling port city. With the sun dropping into the Aegean, it was an auspicious beginning to our 15-night, 3,733-nautical mile voyage to Dubai, promising adventures that would include transiting the Suez Canal.

This was a repositioning cruise, getting the Quest from the Mediterranean to the Far East, which meant many sea days — nine in all, counting the canal transit — and affordable fares. Of the five port calls, three — Rhodes, Greece; Kas, Turkey; and Limassol, Cyprus — came at the beginning, providing no rest for the weary. Muscat in Oman and Dubai, where the ship spent a full day and a night before we disembarked, were at the end.

At Rhodes, the Quest docked adjacent to Old Town, where we strolled through winding lanes, stopping at the Jewish Museum in Kahal Shalom, said to be the oldest synagogue in Greece. We wandered freely, knowing that we couldn’t go too far astray in this compact, walled city.

Kas, on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, was a highlight. Three among our traveling group of six had been there before and knew we could charter a gulet — a wooden boat, usually sail-powered, though ours wasn’t — that would take us to Kekova Island and its partly sunken ancient city. We found Ali Sarica, appropriately nicknamed Captain Garlic, and his gulet Batin 2. After we came to terms — $75 apiece, including a tip, for our all-day trip — Ali and Fatima, his wife, first mate and cook, headed off on motor scooters for lunch provisions.

Batin 2 was ideal for us, with plenty of shaded space forward for lounging and sightseeing and a long table aft that would hold a luncheon of rice and salads all freshly prepared en route by Fatima while we motored to a small Kekova cove. We swam among the ruins in water that was sparkling clear and turquoise. Ali grilled chicken. Garlic reigned.

In Limassol, the next port, the AzAmazing Evening took place, a signature event offered on most Azamara cruises. Ours was a chamber concert performed in front of medieval Kolossi Castle. Unfortunately, predicted rain mandated a large tent, which obscured the view of the castle’s façade — but a wise precaution because a wild thunderstorm blew in, adding drama to the concert. It reportedly hadn’t rained in months.

Uninterrupted sea time

When the Quest loosed its lines in Limassol one minute before midnight, we said goodbye to land for the next week plus. This was unusual for Azamara Club Cruises, which usually features “longer stays, more overnights, and night touring.” But we were repositioning and happy with the prospect of uninterrupted sea time.

For me that would mean luxuriating with books on chaise longues on Deck 5, close to the sea, or sitting on our balcony. Laurel did that too, but each sea day would find her rehearsing, with 20 shipmates, as the High Seas Choir prepared songs from “Mamma Mia” that would be performed as the opening act of the ship’s final on-board show, a tribute to Broadway called “Stage Door of Dreams.”

Much more filled days at sea. Our friends planned theirs around multiple trivia contests daily, and lectures on such subjects as Alexander the Great and the Suez Canal. The latter interested me most because I knew the canal transit, from 4 a.m to midafternoon, would be intriguing, with war monuments, the soaring Mubarak Peace Bridge and countless skiffs that rowed or sailed up to us to wave.

As we cleared the canal, a boat approached and five blue-suited men boarded — from Protection Vessels International — as backup security. They proved an amiable presence — perhaps explained by the absence of any pirate encounter. On a misty full-moon night, with Deck 5 darkened as we boomed through the Gulf of Aden, spray flying, their head honcho enjoyed the moment as much as we.

“And I get paid for this,” he said with a chuckle. They participated in (but lost) the on-deck tug-of-war among various crew departments for which passengers gathered en masse and Capt. Vilarinho acted as cheerleader.

“We do this on repositioning trips with lots of sea days,” chief engineer Roberto said when I complimented him on the event. “It’s fun for the crew too.” Another sea day highlight, also featuring the crew, was Quest Expo, when each department, from engine to deck to spa, filled the main lounge with tools of their trade and fielded questions from passengers. Then there was the “Iron Chef” competition, which pitted cruise director Russ against hotel director Philip.

“Eat, drink, and be happy” was always Russ’ mantra, and we did just that, in Discoveries, the main dining room, and the two extra-charge restaurants: Prime C (a steakhouse) and Aqualina (contemporary Italian). A nationality-themed buffet was offered in Windows every night, and three times we dined on its open deck aft. The Sunset Bar there was our favorite cocktail spot.

One special dinner was the barbecue buffet on White Night, an Azamara staple, when the pool deck is set with white tablecloths and festively decorated, and passengers are encouraged to wear white. Because it fell on Halloween, it became White/Fright Night and officers were in costume.

There I spotted a pirate. I couldn’t identify him but thought he was oddly familiar. Later, I realized it was Capt. Vilarinho. He and the similarly attired hotel director were the only pirates we saw on our voyage.

Even swollen to $2,536 by taxes, fees, port expenses and insurance, our $1,999 base fare for a balcony stateroom for 16 nights was a bargain, considering most alcohol and coffee drinks are included, as are gratuities. Azamara on Oct. 7 will offer a similar trans-Suez voyage from Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy, to Dubai aboard the Journey, Quest’s sister ship. The line’s two ships will receive major refurbishments and upgrades during dry dockings early this year.

Things to do in Patmos for cruise visitors – Greece

After braving the crowds on Santorini and Mykonos it was a relief to have a bit of quieter activity on day 3 of our Azamara Cruise. Read about things to do on the quiet and charming Greek island of Patmos.

Because the island has no airport, the ravages of mass tourism have passed it by. Most visitors come in on the ferry from Athens or via the nearby islands of Kos and Samos.

The Monastery of St John

On Patmos we tried one of the Insider Access tours that are offered by Azamara Club Cruises. These tours give insights that are a bit more unusual than the typical tourist sights.

With our guide Carolyn we took the coach up the hill to the village of Chora. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is perched on the hill around the St John’s Monastery.

On the way we heard a bit about the history of Patmos which is a site of pilgrimage for Christians. It was here that St John the Evangelist was exiled from Ephesus and lived for 18 months. During this time he wrote the Book of Revelations.

In recent years, island has become popular with wealthy Europeans and celebrities who value the quiet and seclusion of the island. Many have been buying up the old houses of Chora.

The monastery of St John was built in the 11th century. On the hillside below there is a much visited cave which is thought to be where St John went to pray and meditate. It’s thought that it was here he perhaps wrote the Book of Revelations which he dictated to his scribe Prochorus.

Visiting the convent of Evangelismos

We visited the nearby Convent of Evangelismos or Annunciation. The Sunday service had just finished as we arrived and the congregation were enjoying a coffee after the service.

Convent of Evangelinos on Patmos, Greece Photo: Heatheronhertravels.com

The convent is a community of 40 Greek Orthodox nuns who offer religious retreats. The nuns grow their own food in the gardens and carry out their other duties of religious work and prayer.

We took a walk around the vegetable gardens with fruit trees of pomegranates, figs, lemons and other fruits. The fruits are made into the ‘sweet spoon’ preserves that the Greeks offer to guests with coffee.

In the gardens we saw the beehives for honey and wax candles. The gift shop featured examples of the ‘Spitha’ or Spark embroidery made by the nuns, with stitches so fine that they are like tiny sparks.

View of the Convent of Evangelismos on Patmos Photo: Heatheronhertravels.com

The small church looked old and was filled with beautiful icons and frescoes. However, it was actually built in the last 10 years to replace a smaller chapel built in the 1930s.

This in turn had been built on the site of the original monastery founded in the 1600s. We saw a few nuns, dressed in their long black robes, going about their business and chatting with the congregation.

One of the sisters came with us to see the church but seemed happy to stay in the background and let our guide, Carolyn do the talking. When told that were were journalists who would write about the convent she was distinctly unimpressed.

“It doesn’t matter”, she said ” we depend on God not man”. The frescoes and icons inside the church had been created by one of the nuns who was a skilled painter. Unfortunately no photos were allowed inside the church.

Dressing modestly for visiting a Greek monastery or convent

If you visit a Greek orthodox monastery or convent you need to dress modestly;

  • Men should wear long trousers with shirts that cover their shoulders and no hats inside the church.
  • For ladies shoulders and knees should be covered. In the strictest places such as the convent skirts must be worn but in other places trousers are allowed.
  • If you are not suitably dressed, usually wraps or shawls are provided outside the church to cover bare legs and shoulders.
  • The nuns do not wish to be photographed and so you should not point the camera in their direction.

Visiting a traditional house on Patmos

After our visit to the convent we made made the short drive back to Chora and walked through the narrow streets to visit a local house. The village was built between 1500 and 1800 when many seafarers and merchants settled on the island from Crete and Asia Minor and built fine mansions here.

These are now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Behind the high walls and small windows are surprisingly large houses and gardens that you don’t see from the street.

House of Morfousa Simandiri on Patmos, Greece Photo: Heatheronhertravels.com

The island was subject to pirate attacks in the past, so the high walls and small windows were there for protection. When a pirate ship was spotted in the bay, the house owners would cross the interconnecting flat roofs to make their way to the protection of the monastery of St John.

The house that we visited was owned by a lively lady aged 92 called Morfousa Simandiri. Her family had owned the house for eight generations.

There was a portrait on the wall of her ancestor, a wealthy merchant who had built the house. Many beautiful antiques, paintings and lace were on display as we walked through the rooms of the house.

Heather and Guy on Patmos, Greece Photo: Heatheronhertravels.com

After our walk around the streets of Chora we returned for lunch at a nearby restaurant. A fantastic view from the terrace overlooked the bay where we could see Azamara Journey. Here we were able to try many of the tasty Greek specialities such as small stuffed pastries, Greek salad and the local fava bean hummus.

The harbour town of Skala

After our tour we were dropped off in the harbour and wandered around the streets of Skala, the main harbour town of Patmos. Skala was a world away from the crowds and commercialism we had experienced on Santorini and Mykonos.

Since there is no airport on the island, most visitors have to take a long ferry ride from Athens or a flight to one of the neighbouring islands of Kos and Samos and then a ferry from there.

Fava Bean at the Cafe on Patmos, Greece Photo: Heatheronhertravels.com

It was interesting to compare the distinctive architecture of each of the Greek islands we had visited on our Azamara cruise. The houses on Patmos had patterned white plaster work that followed the lines of the stones underneath, often with natural stone corners and window facings and paintwork of washed blue compared to the intense turquoise of Santorini. Since it was Sunday afternoon, I imagine that everyone was home having a siesta and we walked along the harbour to have a sit and a swim on the town beach.

Returning by tender on board the Azamara Journey we relaxed and changed ready for the White Night dinner which is a tradition each cruise and the closest that the relaxed Azamara Cruise gets to a formal night. The tables were set out around the pool area and guests dressed mainly in white enjoyed their dinner in the warm night air.

White Night Party on Board Azamara Journey Photo: Heatheronhertravels.com

We were entertained by the Azamara singers and dancers as the sun set over Patmos, a lovely end to a relaxing day and the end of the Greek island portion of our cruise, as tomorrow we head to the Turkish port of Kusadasi.

About Azamara Club Cruises

Azamara Club Cruises is a small luxury cruise line with two ships; Azamara Journey that Heather and Guy sailed on and Azamara Quest, each with a capacity of 686 guests. The smaller ship size means you often visit destinations that larger ships can’t get into and the ships can dock in more central locations.

The emphasis is on destination immersion ; enjoying the destination to the full, arriving early and sailing late so that guests can enjoy nights and cool places ashore, with insider access programmes and a unique AzAmazing evening included in each cruise.

No itinerary is the repeated and each year the ships visit different destinations around the world. Azamara is part of Royal Caribbean Cruise group. Visit the Azamara Club Cruises website more information about a Mediterranean luxury cruise like the one Heather and Guy enjoyed.

Joining your Azamara Club Cruise

Heather and Guy flew from London Heathrow to Athens and back from Istanbul using British Airways, although obviously each cruise is different in the best way to get there.

Heather used the Meet and Greet Parking Service booked through Airport Parking and Hotels (APH) who offer airport parking at a range of airports across the UK as well as travel extras such as airport lounge booking and airport hotel stays.

Both flights and transfers from the airport to your cruise ship can be arranged through Azamara Cruises.

Heather, I had been doing some research on the Greek isles when I came across this lovely post. So far, I have only been to the main islands of Mykonos and Santorini, but would love to expand that to a quint island like Patmos! What a lovely place. It looks quite charming.

Heather Cowper

@Cacinda Patmos certainly has a different feel to Santorini and Mykonos that we also visited on this cruise and I think was my favourite of the three. It was what you imagine the authentic unspoiled Greece to be, due to the lack of an airport and therefore the crowds of package tourists. If I go back to Greece I'd love to island hop all those islands that don't have an airport.

Azamara Journey Itineraries

Azamara journey review, review of azamara journey.

The 2000-built (as "R-Six"/R6) Azamara Journey cruise ship is the first of all four identical R-Class ships in the Azamara fleet - together with Azamara Quest , Azamara Pursuit and Azamara Onward (Pacific Princess) .

The vessel (IMO number 9200940) is currently Malta- flagged (MMSI 256204000) and registered in Valletta .

History - construction and ownership

Azamara Cruises was a fully-owned subsidiary company of RCG-Royal Caribbean Group until 2021. Founded in 2007 as "Azamara Club Cruises", the company was rebranded in 2009 (Azamara Cruises) and 2019 (Azamara). Azamara ships were originally built as R-Class vessels for Renaissance Cruises (company operational between 1989-2001).

Azamara Journey cruise ship

In January 2021, Azamara's parent company RCG-Royal Caribbean announced an agreement to sell the brand for USD 201 million (~EUR 165,8 M / ~GBP 147,6 M / carve-out transaction) to Sycamore Partners. Sycamore Partners acquired the entire company and its 3 ships, plus all the associated intellectual property rights and goodwill. The all-cash transaction was closed in 2021-Q1. Sycamore Partners (shipowner) is a 2011-founded, NYC -headquartered private equity firm with USD 15+ billion in capital and assets under management. Among the largest of the Sycamore Partners-owned companies are Belk Inc (department store chain), Talbots (retailer of clothing-shoes-fashion accessories), Nine West Holdings (designer and wholesaler of branded clothing-shoes-accessories) and Staples Inc (office retailer).

The 694-passenger ship Azamara Journey was formerly sailing as R Six (Renaissance) and Blue Dream (Pullmantur).

In 2001, the vessel's original owner Renaissance Cruises ceased operations due to liquidity. The vessel was launched in 2003, and operated by charter Pullmantur Cruises under the name "Blue Star". In 2005, Pullmantur officially renamed it to "Blue Dream". In 2008, Pullmantur's owner RCCL (Royal Caribbean) transferred it to the subsidiary (new luxury brand) "Azamara Cruises" (in 2009 rebranded to "Azamara Club Cruises") and renamed the ship to "Azamara Journey".

The award-winning boutique ship amazes with lots of dining options, an unforgettable spa, and wellness facilities, friendly staff always in place to help passengers and destinations that guests would love to visit.

As a Renaissance-class ship, the interior of the vessel is in Edwardian style, resembling a Transatlantic steamship from the early years of the 20th century. When you enter the ship, it looks like you have entered the "golden era". There's no multi-deck atrium - only a curving staircase that amazes you with its grace and elegance, leading to the main public room of the vessel. The ceiling has glass skylight, stained simulated, it is capped with a dome and its height is two decks.

Azamara Journey cruise ship

Azamara Journey cruise ship entered drydock on January 22, 2016, in the Bahamas. During the 5-day process, she received a host of refurbishments and upgrades , announced previously in June, as well as a technology overhaul. The brand new "Pervasive Wi-Fi" system provides faster Internet connectivity from any place on board the ship. Interactive TVs in all staterooms feature new options including live TV, movies on demand, lecturer schedules, weather updates, navigational and port information. Passengers are able to book a shore excursion through their TVs, as well as to order room service. In the Inspiration Center on Deck 4, Azamara guests are able to plan their next voyage by a 98-inch touchscreen to learn about future sailings and the ports visited. Passengers in The Drawing Room and Living Room use interactive tabletops to send digital postcards, design their own art by a Scribble app, or surf social media sites.

Decks and Cabins

Azamara Journey staterooms (355 total, in 24 grades) include 44 Suites, 199 Balcony, 88 Oceanview, 26 Inside. Handicap/wheelchair-accessible cabins (for disabled passengers) are only 6 (2x Balcony, 2x Oceanview, 2x Interior). A total of 243 staterooms have private, step-out balconies. Most cabin balconies are sized 45-60 ft2 / 4-6 m2. The largest accommodations are the World Owners Suite (600 ft2 / 56 m2 plus 215 ft2 / 20 m2 terrace).

The boat has 11 decks , of which 9 are passenger-accessible and 6 with cabins.

Four elevators (2x Forward and 2x Aft passenger lifts) interconnect all decks.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

For a small ship, Azamara Journey features plenty of options for each meal. The passengers are also encouraged to explore local cuisine when onshore. The line added a complimentary tapas bar when the ship went into dry dock in 2016. Overall, the food onboard is quite good. There are rotating themes in the buffet and the tables there are spruced up at night with soft glowing orbs. The main dining room pampers with an entree salad every night.

Follows the complete list of Azamara Journey restaurants and food bars.

  • Discoveries Restaurant (aft Dining Room, complimentary, with waiter service, open seating Breakfast 8-9:30 am, Lunch 12-1:30 pm, and Dinner 6-9:30 pm)
  • Pool Grill (lunch-only casual dining restaurant with a fast-food menu, made-to-order - pizza, pasta, burgers, fries, salads; complimentary)
  • Windows Cafe (complimentary buffet restaurant; has indoor seating and portside/starboard terraces; open between 6:30 am - 9:30 pm; offers early, buffet and late breakfast, buffet lunch, afternoon tea, and casual dinner)
  • Aqualina (dinner-only specialty restaurant with Mediterranean cuisine and seafood; offers free dining for Club Suite passengers; reservations recommended)
  • Prime C (dinner-only specialty restaurant with seafood and steakhouse menu; operates at surcharge, but it's free of charge for "Club Suite" passengers; outside the Prime C there is a Wine Cellar with 8000+ bottles collection; hosts the Wine Corner evening events and offers wine-tastings and private dinner arrangements).

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Because the ship focuses very much on destinations, Azamara Journey does not have as many daily activities as passengers might find on mainstream cruise ships. There are a couple of trivia sessions each day and some other pastimes, such as origami and Bridge. The Cabaret Lounge is the ship's cabaret space, with risers behind, as opposed to a true theater. As the ceilings are low-slung, this space feels more cramped and the type of shows offered there is limited.

Other amenities include 24-Hour Room-Service, Internet/WiFi Access, Laundry/Self-Serve Laundromats. The Journey ship is not recommended for families with little children.

Azamara Journey Wiki

As an R-Class (Renaissance) vessel, Azamara Journey has sisterships also in the Oceania Cruises fleet - Insignia , Nautica , Regatta , Sirena .

Azamara ship Journey was ordered and operated as "R Six" by Renaissance Cruises for the period 2000-2003. After the line's bankruptcy, the ship was in Pullmantur's fleet under the name "Blue Star" (2003-2005) and "Blue Dream" (2005-2007).

Azamara Journey is powered by four WARTSILA marine diesel engines (model 12V32E). Its propulsion consists of 2 propeller shafts and 2 fixed pitch propellers (FPP).

In 2015, both Azamara ships (Journey and Quest) were featured in the UK TV’s travel documentary “Cruise Ship Adventures with Nigel Marven”.

On February 8, 2017, Azamara Journey made its maiden visit to Australia docking in Darwin NT . The ship's itinerary (Feb 1-19) was an 18-day cruise from Singapore to Sydney AU , and also visited Indonesia (Benoa Bali, and Komodo Island) and ports in Queensland Australia (Thursday Island, Port Douglas, Cairns, Townsville, Hamilton Island).

Azamara Journey deck plan changes 2016 refurbishment review

The ship's last drydock refurbishment (January 22-27, done in Freeport Bahamas ) resulted in the following deck plan changes:

  • Large touch screen displays were installed in several areas around the ship. They allow passengers (for free) to send digital postcards, explore world atlas maps and also provide Azamara Cruises itineraries and ports of call information.
  • On Deck 4, Inspiration Center received a 98-inch touchscreen (interactive system provides information on future cruises - itineraries, ports, excursions).
  • On Deck 10, The Drawing Room (Library) and the Living Room both received interactive tabletops (used for sending digital postcards, Scribble app, Internet / social media websites).
  • Two new Club Spa Suites were built in the place of the eConnections (computer room, located portside on Lido Deck 9). Also on deck 9 was added The Patio (outdoor BBQ restaurant) and Swirl & Top (frozen yogurt bar).
  • On Deck 10 was added The Living Room (forward observation lounge & bar, disco nightclub) replacing the Looking Glass Lounge.
  • Many public areas were newly equipped (Looking Glass, Patio Grill, Sunset Bar).
  • Upgrades and renovations received the restaurants Prime C, Aqualina, Windows Cafe (buffet). The Sanctum Spa (formerly Astral Spa) complex was redesigned and expanded.

All cabins and suites were renovated with new carpeting and wall covers, fabrics, furniture, shelving, curtains, bedding sets (pillows, duvets), new lighting and smart HDTVs (interactive system). All staterooms were upgraded with bigger coffee tables. Bathrooms were redesigned to be more space-efficient. Quality wood elements were used throughout all staterooms. Additionally, all high-grade Suites were updated with new modern furniture, dining tables, drapes, media consoles and sound systems.

There was a plan for replacing the Lido Deck’s Sunset Bar (aft on deck 9) with a new (named Kibo) specialty restaurant with Asian cuisine. However, the line later decided not to replace the popular day bar, but just to upgrade it. The refurbishment plans for an Asian restaurant plus an outside seating area for the buffet restaurant Windows Cafe were officially canceled.

The onboard Wi-Fi coverage was upgraded to shipwide (via “Pervasive Wi-Fi” system). The new Interactive TV system (in all cabins) offers movies on demand, live TV programming, onboard event schedules, weather updates, itinerary/port information. The system also allows shore excursion booking through the TV, as well as room service orders.

The boat's 2016 drydock refurbishment project cost USD 25 million.

In 2021 (August) the ship was drydocked at Navantia Shipyard ( Cadiz Spain ), mainly for general maintenance (technical and routine) works and repainting (hull and superstructure).

Azamara Journey Cruise Ship Review and Photos

Despite active volcanoes and emerging variants, we couldn’t miss a chance to hop onboard an Azamara Journey cruise for a visit to the Canary Islands .   This would be a new itinerary for me.

Azamara emerged from the pandemic under new ownership . I was interested to see what if any changes had happened with Azamara’s familiar ambiance and service.

Mostly comprised of British passengers, this destination-intensive Canary Islands cruise   would really be a unique experience.

Azamara Journey Ship Review

In This Post...

Azamara Journey jogging track at sunset

I always thought of Spain’s Canary Islands as a Caribbean-type getaway for Europeans. For those from the U.S., a transatlantic flight followed by a layover then additional hours to get to the islands, seemed a tad too far for a quick escape.

Despite the new flight route from JFK to the island of Tenerife, many cruise departures are from Gran Canaria island.

Edged out from the Royal Caribbean umbrella, Azamara is by all accounts flourishing with the funds provided by Sycamore Group, a private equity firm. Onboard, the staff we spoke to seemed to agree that they were more empowered to make decisions on behalf of the ship.

For now, most of Azamara’s operational changes are a direct result of cruising during the COVID-19 pandemic, in an effort to keep guests and crew safe.

Time — and the purpose-built Azamara Onward that debuted in spring 2022 — will tell what touches might differentiate from Azamara’s signature atmosphere under Sycamore.

A Canary Islands Cruise

Our Azamara Journey itinerary was a one-week Canary Islands cruise, roundtrip from Gran Canaria. The voyage squeezed six ports across five islands into eight days, and that meant no sea days.

Our cruise ports included:

Fast Facts – Azamara Journey

Year built : 2000 Year refurbished : 2016 Weight:  30,277 gross tons Decks:  8 Passengers at double occupancy:   690 Crew : 408 Total staterooms:  345

COVID-19 Protocols

Prior to boarding Azamara Journey , passengers had to have a stack of important documents in their possession, including a number of negative COVID-19 test results.

Preparation for cruising during the pandemic begins at home, where passengers are asked to fill out boarding documents that include proof of vaccination.

Traveling through the Canary Islands, under jurisdiction of Spain, a form provided by Spain’s Ministry of Health is also a requirement to enter the country.

Passports and Health Forms Required

Along with passports, passengers are expected to present this health form, boarding documents, and their vaccine card on a number of occasions as they navigate their way to the dock in Gran Canaria.

Transiting through Madrid on the way home helped us avoid lengthy border control lines until we were able to use Global Entry upon return to the U.S.

Azamara hosts its own rapid COVID-19 test onsite at the port, and a negative result is required to board. Once onboard, masks are required in all public areas of the ship, except while actively eating and drinking.

Welcome Aboard Azamara Journey

Azamara Journey Front Desk Staff

Embarkation has changed — perhaps forever — due to pandemic protocols. Some of the changes, including more paperwork and health checks, lead to long wait times in the sun at the port with nowhere to sit.

While others, including less formal lifeboat drills in small groups immediately upon embarkation — with Champagne! — were welcome adaptations.

Once our lifejacket demonstrator completed all necessary safety briefings, we were whisked to our cabin by an attendant. In our room, in addition to the usual brochures and welcome materials, were two blue cloth masks emblazoned with the Azamara logo.

We felt it was a nice touch that encouraged mask-wearing among guests.

INSIDER TIP: We were asked to sanitize your hands before each meal so be mindful of keeping your hands clean without drying them out. A good-quality hand cream can be a lifesaver.

First Impressions Azamara Journey

We sailed Azamara two years prior on the line’s then-newest ship, Azamara Pursuit . This time, the entire ship was decorated in anticipation of Christmas.

Metallic ornaments kept it classy while the various gingerbread houses constructed by teams from around the ship — including a village with a working toy train — contributed to a fun and festive atmosphere.

Azamara Journey gingerbread house decoration

Despite the shift in time and seasons, boarding Journey felt a bit like coming home, an intentional mimicking of a nearly identical feel across the fleet of three (soon to be four) ships.

From the grand staircase to the main dining room and the classic library to the pool deck, we already had the sense that this ship was familiar.

But uniformity takes work, and changes meant to be rolled out to the ship during a dry dock in summer 2021, were now unavoidably taking place in December with passengers onboard.

Supply Chain Issues Were Noticeable

Supply-chain issues, that plagued many industries during the pandemic, left the ship without the proper carpeting in the Den on Deck 5 and new wallpaper in key passenger areas.

We didn’t notice anything amiss during our first day onboard as construction crews were quietly roamed our hallways. They were quick to rip down wallpaper and replace it with new high-quality fabric from Japan.

The noise was surprisingly not much of an issue, though the lingering smell was a bit distracting.

While some new, high-quality touches are the result of a cash infusion into the company, other noticeable changes are the direct result of pandemic protocols.

Club Veranda Stateroom

We stayed in cabin 7079, your standard balcony room onboard an Azamara ship, and a comfortable way to sail the Canaries. With 175 square feet of space and a 40-square-foot balcony, two guests won’t be cramped by any means.

Azamara Journey Balcony Stateroom

One of our favorite features of an Azamara Veranda cabin is the size of its balcony furniture; comfortable seating and a large table mean a balcony breakfast or wine and cheese at sundown are not a hassle.

Our least favorite feature is still the tiny bathroom size. While functional, we could not imagine our 6’7 cruise director fitting in any way, shape, or form into the itty-bitty shower with a clingy shower curtain.

Azamara Journey small bathroom

Three small shelves and no space by the sink were not quite enough for two women, so we kept many of our hair and makeup products on the desk, or in a bag that hung from the door; a major space-saver.

Inclusions in this class of cabin are typically standard, with terry robes and slippers. Although we received the leather card carrier which is always a nice touch, we didn’t notice the tote bag that many others were sporting. Still, the small cruise line is more generous with logo items than others we know.

Stateroom Amenities

Rooms come equipped with both standard U.S. and European outlets, as well as USB ports under the bedside reading lamps. Technology quickly outpaces charging units, so be sure you have chargers that can be plugged into either of these. Hair dryers are provided in a drawer by the desk.

Beds can be combined for one queen or separated as two twins. We felt the linens and pillows were sufficiently comfortable. Other cabin features include a loveseat with a small round table, a desk with a chair and a large mirror. A flatscreen TV offers a handful of channels from international news and movies to what’s happening around the ship.

Getting Organized in Our Stateroom

Closet space is limited, but two friends who overpacked for a single week were able to jam everything — just barely — into a few shelves and a small closet. Depending on how much you’re looking to bring, be mindful of finite hanger space.

Toiletries in the bathroom include a bar of soap, shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion with a light, aloe vera and green tea scent. Elemis products are still provided in more premium cabins.

Much to the chagrin of our hotel director and longtime Azamara employee Tony Markey, the installation of water refill stations around the ship was still a work in progress.

Water, Water Everywhere But…

Unfortunately, that meant that in the meantime, water was provided to guests in now-taboo plastic bottles. Water was plentiful, both in our cabins and provided before or during shore excursions. The inability to move past plastic is a slight setback for Azamara’s sustainability initiatives.

Azamara provides self-service washers and dryers, handy on longer voyages, but you must buy detergent. The laundry room is open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is located across from stateroom 7076.

INSIDER TIP:  Bring your own reusable bottle, and use the water provided on the ship; even if it’s from a plastic bottle, you’ll have more H20 with you and can ask the ship to recycle them.

Our Room Steward

Cleaning up behind two women is never an easy feat, but as kind as our room steward was, he also seemed a bit scattered at times. We enjoyed wine in our room each night and brought our own bottles onboard — port from a port call in Portugal, to be exact.

But despite this clear signal to provide clean wine glasses, we had to replace our own every night with a somewhat confused call to room service — “No, not the wine, just the glass.”

The same idea applied to my use of an additional duvet. Each night the extra comforter was packed away and each night I would have to lug it out again, hoping he would catch on that I liked an unnecessary amount of blankets.

Our room was always neat as a pin. But intuitive service like making the bed with an extra blanket or having wine glasses ready to go each evening when we returned onboard, would have given that more personal touch.

Dining Options on Azamara Journey

Making the best of meal times.

Despite constant changes in the ways guests are served during a pandemic, service levels remained high — something we also took particular note of on our first Azamara cruise.

Every crew member made a genuine effort to positively influence our experience, but perhaps none left as much of an impact as our servers in Discoveries Restaurant, Roston (“from Boston”) and Aaron.

Humorous and attentive, they struck a chord with our young American hearts, though they seemed to thrive at their job no matter the nationality, and that takes skill.

Complimentary Dining Choices

There are three complimentary, no-fee dining venues plus room service onboard Azamara Journey. Each restaurant offers guests a full rage of selections.

Every night is themed after a different type of cuisine, ex. Italian and French. The themes differ between the main dining room and the buffet.

We felt the themes were a little odd at times. Rather than emphasize local cuisine, the restaurant chose to serve British food to a ship of Brits.

However, Indian night was a highlight. After learning how disappointed we were to miss it during a dinner in Prime C, our waitstaff made sure to order us a full Indian feast for the following evening.

Indian food for dinner on Azamara Journey

This was a special touch that impressed us. Overall, the quality of the food was quite good and the service was excellent.

Discoveries Restaurant

Open for breakfast (8 to 9:30) and dinner (6 to 9) with lunch served only on the day we were docked overnight in Funchal. Discoveries on Deck 5 is the main dining room onboard and it is a grand space.

The formal dining room is designed to accommodate most passengers on the ship at once. Only half of the dining room was in use during our sailing due to lower capacity.

We found that on a ship of Europeans, a 6 o’clock dinner was eerily quiet but pleasant if we needed an early night — most came to dinner around 8.

Azamara Journey dining QR code card

The use of QR codes, now common in land-based restaurants to reduce contact, were available on the daily program and around the ship to view menus or make reservations, but we found neither were needed.

We were always accommodated and handed physical menus.

Typical Daily Dining Options

Breakfast options were international, like many of the menus onboard, and dishes were a bit unexpected: a Mediterranean salad or an Asian chicken and rice congee to start, followed by Arabic shakshuka or asparagus Benedict.

Of course, classic breakfast options — pancakes, bacon, scrambled eggs, and the like — were plenty available upon request.

On the Discoveries menu each evening we found an enticing offering of starters, main courses, and desserts. Plus an always-available menu included standards like steak, salmon, and Caesar salad.

Each night it was possible to order an entire meal from the chef’s theme du jour. On Indian night, it was hard to resist samosas and butter chicken. Other nights we thoroughly enjoyed the fish. The soups, such as a Spanish gazpacho or minestrone, were always delicious.

Windows Café

Windows, the buffet venue on Deck 9 open for breakfast (7 to 10), lunch (12 to 2), and dinner (6:30 to 8:30), was where we turned to for al fresco dining. The quick convenience of the buffet is hampered slightly by the inability to serve yourself due to health and safety measures.

Windows Cafe Buffet

We chose to sit at the back of the ship and admire the stunning views of the islands in the morning and in the evening.

We ordered our energizer shots and fresh-squeezed juices at the entrance. Then we chose a variety of fruit and pastries or hot dishes. Finally, we grabbed outdoor seating with coffee served to your table.

Lunch was a similar affair, sans the juice bar.

Windows Patio at Night

At night, Windows became something like a bistro, and we hope it stays that way. We loved sitting out on the deck and indulging in a menu unique from the main dining room, like South American.

A casual option for lunch, The Patio is the poolside grill on Azamara Journey. We were pleasantly surprised by all of the options, which ranged from burgers (salmon, veggie, lamb, beef, turkey) to brochettes, soups, Buffalo wings, nachos, and sandwiches like pork loin with sauteed onions and feta on a baguette or a grouper panini with salsa and Chinese cabbage.

Swirl & Top, the soft-serve ice cream machines, are located here; they were out of service when we asked about them, but we were brought hard ice cream sundaes instead from Windows Café.

Room Service

Onboard Azamara Journey , room service is complimentary and available 24 hours a day. Our favorite order was a cheese plate and two glasses of rose as we got ready for dinner, but sandwiches, desserts, and even a pizza are on offer.

For room service breakfast, a room tag is provided in your room to make your selections and hang it on your stateroom door the night before. Continental options as well as hot breakfast dishes like steak and eggs are available, free of charge.

We found that our breakfast consistently arrived early; better than late, but a bit of an unexpected wakeup call.

Specialty Dining

Chef’s table.

Dinners at are available throughout the cruise, but limited to a dozen or so guests.

For $95 per person, this six-course, food-and-wine paired meal is a sensory experience. It is typically held at a banquet table in one of the specialty dining rooms and hosted by the executive chef.

Azamara Chef's Table Specialty Restaurant

During the pandemic, guests are distanced at a minimum of two tables. Themes might be French, Italian, or Arabic.

Additionally, Azamara Journey was trialing a new concept called the Explorer’s Dinner, held once per cruise for $65 per person.

I thought this was a great deal considering a venue was fully decorated for the event and included six courses themed after a regional explorer. Special wine pairings were not included.

On our sailing the meal celebrated Juan Ponce de Leon from Spain with garlic shrimp and paella.

Dining packages are available to bundle culinary experiences, including packages with both specialty restaurants and the Chef’s Table.

Prime C Review

Azamara’s specialty dining restaurants, Prime C and Aqualina, have temporarily become two rotating dining rooms with one menu. Specialty dining remains included for suite guests, otherwise it’s a $30 cover per person.

Due to low passenger counts, kitchen and waitstaff were sometimes accommodating just one or two couples in each restaurant following Azamara’s restart.

Azamara Journey Aqualina Dining Room

To combat the all-too-quiet ambiance, one specialty venue is open each night of the cruise but serves a combined menu from the kitchens of the steakhouse and Italian restaurant, which we were told is a “best of the best” from each.

While some diners seemed to revel in the mix-and-match, the choices can be a bit overwhelming, so review the menu before heading to dinner.

On the left, in red, are three starters, four soups or salads, and five entrees from Prime C, while on the right in blue you could find the same amount of Italian-themed options from Aqualina.

During our specialty dining evening, we sat in Prime C and ordered a combination of dishes like crab and lobster cakes from the steakhouse menu and a braised beef cheek in Chianti sauce that was actually from Aqualina.

Some desserts, like the famed tiramisu, were not available, but service still shined. However, the cook of a fellow diner’s steak and the drawn-out nature of a meal here deterred us from revisiting. Instead, we opted for the exciting menu rotations and familiar service found in Discoveries.

Are Beverages Included on Azamara?

As for drinks, beer, wine, soft drinks, and select cocktails, they are included in the price of your cruise fare. Perhaps our favorite inclusion are the specialty coffees, which include dairy milk alternatives on hand, found at the Mosaic Café on Deck 5.

The juices available at Windows café in the morning are delightful (the smoothies were a bit of a miss). Drink packages are available for an additional fee to enjoy premium spirits and wines throughout the course of your cruise.

Entertainment and Onboard Activities

On a sailing filled entirely with days in port, most passengers are out exploring from the morning until the evening.

Our cruise director — author, entertainer, and former figure skater Eric de Gray — was the glue that held together every show and every event. Even his onboard announcements were amusing, delivered with a signature snark, and his headlining show nearly had us in tears.

Destination Celebration

There is one pool and two whirlpools located on Deck 9, that saw a considerable amount of holiday-makers during the day.

Azamara Journey pool deck

The library, on Deck 10, is a mausoleum-silent space to read or borrow books on the honor system. With a delicate mural on the ceiling, its truly a gorgeous room for an afternoon repose.

Azamara Journey Library

There are two shops onboard Azamara Journey . Indulgences sells the standard duty-free liquor, perfume, and cigarettes, while the Journey Boutique sold luxury clothing, jewelry and accessories.

Nightly meetups are held for Friends of Bill W., LGBTQ, and singles and solo travelers.

Insider Tip: Visit the dining reservations desk in the Windows Café. Ask around for a list of each venue’s dinner themes for the entirety of the cruise. That way, you can plan ahead (and not miss Indian night!)

We were forewarned on a first-day ship tour that many of the crew members at the Sanctum Spa were unable to join the Azamara Journey.   This was due to their country’s COVID-19 restrictions.

Despite being short staffed, we loved our spa experiences (yes, plural). The staff were extremely friendly and professional.

My travel companion had her luggage misplaced by the airline and boarded the ship without her hard-earned, high-end hair products.

Without missing a beat, the spa manager pulled every Elemis product she might have needed. Even with limited therapists onboard, we had a combined four treatments — including my first-ever facial. We raved about them all.

Spa Discounts and Services

Spa specials ran throughout the cruise. With a booked treatment you received a discount on future treatments. Facials ranged from $129 to $199 and massages ranged from $149 to $299.

Hair, nails, and waxing services are also available at The Sanctum, along with teeth whitening and shaves for men. The spa was typically open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Sanctum Terrace is a lovely and serene spot at the front of the ship, just outside the spa. There are loungers and a small thalassotherapy pool.

Should You Buy a Spa Pass?

Daily and weekly passes were available. But we were able to enjoy some time here before and after our spa treatments. It’s the perfect place to watch the sunset if you can manage it. The terrace hours are listed until 8 p.m. but we never saw anyone else there.

Unfortunately, many of the missing spa staff were fitness instructors, so onboard classes like Pilates were unavailable. However, the fitness center was open and self-guided workouts and stretching were encouraged.

Only eight guests were allowed inside at one time, and masks were required.

Daytime Activities

On such a port-intensive itinerary, daytime activities extend to card games, shuffleboard, intimate trivia sessions, or a walk around the jogging track.

However, we did notice a fair number of Brits onboard who spent ample time soaking up the Spanish sunshine from a lounger near the pool.

Apart from a smattering of dance classes and maybe a lesson on smartphone photography, we were disappointed by the lack of enrichment.

We did hear a lot of positive feedback about a wine and food pairing exercise, but guests had to pay an additional fee to participate.

Enrichment Lectures

From a cruise line that claims total destination immersion, we wanted to learn more about the ports and the culture and not just what few shore excursions were offered.

A lecture on the Spanish Civil War was postponed due to poor attendance. We place that blame less on the passengers and more on the activities staff choosing enrichment topics.

Despite an active volcano on La Palma, we were still able to dock. Some information on volcanoes — how the Canary Islands were formed — seemed like a more relevant and timely topic.

Insider Tip: If you don’t feel like an all-day excursion, reserve tea at Reid’s Palace (in Funchal) online in advance. It’s a bit of an uphill climb, but totally walkable and bookable on your own. Only available from 3-4:30 Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday.

Reid's Palace Hotel in Funchal, Madeira

Evening Entertainment

The vibe onboard Azamara Journey is relaxed and a bit sleepy. While there were some standout entertainment experiences, evening plans sometimes began and ended with a simple nightcap.

There are bars located in each dining venue. Additional bars included the Cabaret Lounge, Mosaic Café, Pool Bar, the Living Room, and Spirits in the Den.

Be sure to find the Sunset Bar on Deck 9 aft, it’s the perfect place for a sailaway drink. This bar has its own unique beverage menu that features tasty tropical tipples. We wish we had found sooner.

Where You’ll Find Live Music

At night, you can find a variety of live music around the ship to complement your cocktail. On our sailing we enjoyed the band East Pearl. They worked triple duty playing dance hits before dinner, at night, and late-night in the Deck 10 Living Room.

There was a pianist who played near Spirits bar. The Journey Orchestra performed Latin music every night in the Living Room. Plates of tapas were offered.

If you are extra vigilant, you might be able to catch a karaoke session in the Living Room lounge.

Capacity was capped in the Cabaret Lounge, the onboard theater, but it was never a problem for the evening shows. The singers and dancers had the task of appealing to a multicultural audience.

Shows like “Four on the Floor” and needless to say, there was a lot of ABBA.

We attended the classical piano recital of Sasha Kovalovin and thoroughly enjoyed his talent alongside his charming commentary.

White Night and the AzAmazing Evening, Azamara’s signature events were canceled due to COVID. But the resilience and resourcefulness of Azamara’s hotel and activities staff and crew ensured guests were still able to celebrate.

Azamara Journey Bright Night Entertainment

White Night — temporarily – became Bright Night, a version of the deck party muddled by crowd capacities and then bad weather.

The theater held the main performance. Guests encouraged to dance though mask use was not enforced.

Similarly, accommodating hundreds of guests at a local venue wasn’t doable for the AzAmazing Evening. So Azamara Journey hosted a Destination Celebration, instead.

This included a poolside performance from a quartet called Paganini, and a Spanish dinner in the Windows Café.

The humor-infused classical concert was a perfect fit for the Azamara audience. There were two showtimes in two seatings.

The destination centered around the unique culture of the Canary Islands and not blanket Spain. But it would have been nice to try more regional dishes and drinks from the places we visited.

Perhaps it was not possible due to logistical challenges.

Who’s Onboard

Well-traveled retired couples are typical Azamara guests. The small ship cruise line also attracts a strong number of loyal and return cruisers.

On our Canary Islands cruise, there were 329 total passengers (about half capacity) spanning an impressive 19 nationalities. British passengers made up two-thirds of the guests. Danish about 10 percent.

There were just 15 Americans onboard, 11 Germans and 10 Macedonians. Plus, a mix of over a dozen other countries represented.

Final Thoughts – Azamara Journey Review

Azamara has largely ditched its formal Azamara Club Cruises moniker, while retaining its clubby camaraderie in all the best ways.

It’s not the most luxurious cruise line, or the most modern, or the most intimate. There is familiarity and a genuine nature to the service onboard that is hard to pinpoint but easy to recognize.

Even during a global pandemic and an ownership change, Azamara has retained its signature offerings and its stellar crew. This included comfortable surrounds, tasty cuisine, a welcoming atmosphere, and access to spectacular destinations.
