Perfect Batam Travel Guide 2024

batam travel guide, batam riau

Batam Travel Guide : I’ve lived in Batam for almost 8 years and I still visit the place from time to time (to visit my family). The tropical group of islands is about 20 kilometers from Singapore.

Today Batam is an industrial and is popular amongst Singapore’s locals for weekend getaways. Like Bali and most Indonesian tourist islands, people visit Batam for its beaches, resorts, spas, and variety of seafood cuisines !

Bintan and Batam Riau happen to be the two closest Indonesian spots to Singapore making for a budget visit to get a feel of Indonesia. Even for foreign travelers, I recommend visiting Batam or Bintan if you’re looking for a short detour.

Visit Batam for a couple of days for an exotic getaway, for a taste of the crisp air by the beaches.

This post covers everything you need to know about visiting the Riau Islands. Here is my Batam Travel Guide!

Table of Contents

Best Things to Do in Batam

I’ll make sure not to overflow this list with the itsy bitsy things you can get out. Let’s get to things Batam is particularly famous for.

There are a handful of places to visit – most come here for Indonesian restaurants, shopping, beaches, resorts, and experiences like Snorkeling. 3 days should be sufficient to get around Batam Riau – but feel free to stay longer :)

Here’s the list of Things to do in Batam Riau:

  • Visit the Bareland Bridge
  • Go crazy with watersport activities

Snorkel at Abang Island

  • Visit the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Monastery
  • Try Nasi Padang, Sate (BBQ), and Mie Goreng
  • Eat Seafood at Golden Prawn and Wey Wey Seafood Restaurant

Check out the Vietnamese Camp

  • Get a massage/spa!
  • Go shopping at Batam’s numerous malls
  • Cafes, bars, and live music
  • Relax at Nongsa Point, KTM Resorts, and/or Kiki Beach

Visit the Barelang Bridge

The first must-visit place is the Barelang Bridge in Batam. There’s no way this Batam travel guide is complete without it. This bridge is one of the most scenic views and marks the beginning of the 7 bridges connecting the islands of Galang and Rempang .

Avoid visiting on the weekend and late evenings . The evenings are crowded here making up for a lot of traffic jams.

Corn and coconut by the bridge : Right after the bridge is a bunch of street stalls serving hot corn and coconut water. The grilled corn is a must-try here. The place gets pretty smoky and the varieties of grilled corn flavors are something to look forward to.

I recommend trying the chili for those who can handle the spice!

The locals here are friendly. It’s best to learn some basic Indonesian phrases to help yourself communicate here. Here’s a list I created of basic local phrases for travelers !

Go Crazy with Watersports

To the adventure junkies out there, watersports in Batam are cheap . I’ve seen Jet Ski and Banana boat prices sky-high in Singapore and Bali. Here, it’s relatively cheaper.

Make sure to plan as watersport activities are spread across the island. It takes time to get there so search up a bit on the activities you’re looking for.

Well-known spots for watersports in Batam are Harris Resort (Sekupang), Batam View Beach Resorts (Nongsa), Turi Beach Resorts (Nongsa), and KTM Resort (Sekupang). For specific watersports like Cable Skiing – Waterfront City in Sekupang is a great option.

Note: For snorkeling, keep reading ahead – there’s a special for it in Batam :)

I highly recommend this when visiting Batam! This is an itinerary trip hosted by the locals of Abang Island in the Galang District. This is a fishing village on the Pulau Pengapalap and the only way to get here is via a tiny boat called Bot Pompong.

Snorkeling here is such an offbeat experience (links to post on Bintan) that no amount of money can buy. With the corals and the variety of fishes right under your nose, the clear waters are something of the world.

It’s usually a 1-day or 2-day trip to Abang Island where you stay at their local guest houses and they provide meals. The snorkeling begins early in the morning at the nearby islands – Pulau Abang and Petong Islands.

I’ve visited the place and remember my trip vividly. The best part is the local experience of staying with the locals for an evening. Read my personal Abang Island experience here.

Don’t miss a Massage!

How can you miss a massage in Indonesia? The moment you step down from immigration in Harborfront Singapore, you’re bound to see posts of spa spots in Batam. One of the main reasons is spas are expensive elsewhere.

What costs around SGD 60 for a 1-hour spa in Singapore, costs SGD 20 – 40 here. Some great places are IndoThai SPA, Sakura SPA, ESKA Group Aesthetic, and MediSpa.

The best way to window shop around spas in Batam is at Nagoya. Get to Jalan Nagoya Hill Mall and take a stroll around the loop of spas, restaurants, and bars.

As promised, here are some amazing spa spots for pretty decent rates. Book your slot today!

Visit the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple

This is one of the few Buddhist temples in Batam, making up for a picturesque spot with gigantic Buddha statues everywhere. No matter how noisy it gets outside, the insides of the temple are always calm.

I recommend trying the food here at the temple’s end for a touch of vegetarian dishes!

maha vihara duta maitreya, batam buddhist temple

Try Nasi Padang, Satay (BBQ), and Mie Goreng

Nasi Padang is the first thing you must know about Indonesian food. If you know well enough, you might land an Indonesian citizenship! Don’t take me seriously now.

Anyway, Nasi Padang isn’t a specific dish: As tradition goes, it’s steamed rice served with pre-cooked sides of your choice. You’ll know the place when you see a pretty arrangement of white plates with different aromas from them.

These Padang spots make up the majority of food courts and restaurants like most parts of Indonesia. But to recommend, some places to check out are RM Sederhana, Ayam Bakar Taliwang (known for their special sambal or chili sauce), and Rumah Makan Ranah Padang.

Satay (or Sate as they pronounce it) is another Indonesian dish where meat is grilled, seasoned, and served with spicy sauce. The meat is cut into tiny pieces and served on sticks. There are many places in Batam for trying out the Satay.

Last but not least, is noodles – Bakso or Mie Goreng (fried noodles with vegetables and sides of your preference). You get these as instant noodles (Indomie) from any supermarket but the stall sheds are something else :)

Eat Seafood at Golden Prawn and Love Seafood Restaurant

I daresay Seafood is reasonable in Batam – it’s comparatively cheaper than most tourism hotspots in Indonesia for the same variety and delicacies. Some even let you choose your crabs!

Back then, Golden Prawn 933 Bengkong by the shores was the most authentic seafood place in Batam and still is among the prominent ones. But many have paced up with tourism – some of them being Love Seafood Tanjung Piayu, Citi Rasa seafood in Galang, Sei Enam, and of course – Barelang Seafood .

However, here’s a detailed piece on all the seafood places in Batam .

Take a drive around the Vietnamese camp in the Galang district . Fun fact: During the Vietnam civil war in 1975, people fled by boat to Southeast Asia. And Galang was one of the places they took refuge in!

Some made it, many died. But for those who survived, Indonesia recognized and created a refugee camp. While no one resides here anymore, the buildings and the camp are a tourism hotspot.

The entry fee is negligible (around IDR 35,000) and it’s worth the visit.

The UN recognized and referred Galang to as the Vietnam Village. If you take a drive around the camp today, the area is lush with its forests but you’ll find the buildings, hospitals, and cemeteries that date back to the functioning periods of the camp.

Relax at Nongsa Point, KTM Resorts, Kiki Beach

Then come the resorts… Batam’s got plenty! There are numerous skyscrapers for hotels, if you’re going to relax, I recommend picking a resort by the beach – private chalets overlooking the beach. Some all-time great ones are Nongsa Point Marina Resort, Harris Resorts, KTM Resorts, and Turi Beach.

The newest addition is the Kiki Beach Resort . I recently visited the place and it was amazing!

Here are a few resorts I picked that are best known for their comfort and reasonable rates. Being a partner of Klook.com, our readers get better deals so hurry and grab your Batam stay!

kiki resort batam, resorts in batam

Anyway, for budget travel, there are tons of options too. Fun fact, it costs only between SGD 6 – 10 for budget accommodation by Oyo or RedDoorz. Of course, nothing fancy like the resorts – but it’s great for backpackers!

Here’s another resort I checked out in Batam.

Go shopping, clubbing, and live music

Apart from the resort, the water activities, and snorkeling, what’s left out is shopping! You get quality services here at cheap rates. I’ve heard people come here from Singapore to get their laundry done!

Keep a day for shopping in Batam. Some popular malls are Mega Mall, Grand Batam, Nagoya, Batam City Square (popularly called BCS), and Batam One. Oh, and check out the food court at Batam One (I recently visited and loved the Ayam bakar at one of the stalls).

Pubs and live music . Though most locals don’t speak English, you’ll hear them sing English perfectly at live music avenues! Ask them if they know English and they’ll say ‘No I’ve just learned the song!’

Some notable places in Batam for bars are Fresh Beer , Arch Alley Grill, and BlueFire RestoBar (I’ve been to all three of these). Arch Alley Grill and BlueFire are new but FreshBeer with their own brewery is quite a different experience.

That finishes all the things to do in this Batam travel guide . But keep reading for insider tips – it’ll come in handy!

Batam Travel Guide: How to Get to Batam?

Batam is well-versed with its domestic flights and water routes. However, there are only a handful of international flights to Batam. From Singapore, the easiest (and cheapest) way is via ferry from Harborfront or Tanah Merah. From other parts of Indonesia, domestic flights are preferable.

From Singapore and Malaysia, the cheapest option is via ferry. From Singapore, the only ferry ports are Harbourfront (near the cruise point) and Tanah Merah. Get to Batam via the Batam Center ferry terminal, Harbor Bay, Sekupang, Marina Waterfront, or Nongsapura.

Harborfront Center, Singapore is a much larger port than Tanah Mera. Since these are the only few ports, there are a few ferries to choose from. Some are SindoFerry , BatamFast , WaveMaster , HorizonFerry , and Majestic . Different ferries have their schedule and most depart around hourly intervals.

how to get to batam, batam ferry from singapore

While it cost lesser before the pandemic, it currently costs around SGD 70-80 for a 2-way trip with BatamFast. Check and compare all the mentioned ferry official sites for your preferred timings, pricing, and departure and arrival ports.

For Malaysia, the only available ferry is the Pintas Samudra from Stulang Laut, Johor Bahru.

The Hang Nadim International Airport in Batam is the only city’s airport with a couple of international flights (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia). There are, otherwise, domestic flights from different parts of Indonesia like Jakarta, Bandar Lampung, Jambi City, and Medan.

With water routes too long for different parts of the country, domestic flights are the only option for traveling. Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, Lion Air, and Wings Air are popular flights.

For people traveling from Singapore (if the ferry isn’t available, flying is always an option):

  • Fly straight to Jakarta or take a connecting flight from Singapore via Changi Airport.
  • Take a flight from Jakarta to Hang Nadim Airport, Batam.

Batam Travel Guide: Things to know before you visit Batam

Before you pack your bags and this Batam travel guide , there are some things to know beforehand. Especially to travelers foreign to visiting Indonesia, knowing these things shall let you know what to expect here.

Best time to Visit Batam

All-time of the year! The seasons don’t change a lot in Batam. Located on the equator line and close to the sea, it’s very humid. It’s hot most of the time. When it rains, it rains cats and dogs!

But try NOT to visit on weekends. The last time I traveled from Batam to Singapore, I thought the Ferry terminal was an entry to a concert show- it took half an hour to queue to enter the departure lounge on a Sunday evening!

The only thing to consider while planning your vacation is the peak times. Singaporeans, being an hour away, love to spend their holidays here by the beach. Prices of stays also go up during peak times.

Most Locals Don’t Speak English

senggarang island

Learn some Indonesian language basics when going out to restaurants all by yourself. Most locals don’t speak English in Indonesia. With the booming tourism, you can find guides to help you out – but it’s still a deal-breaker.

Communication shouldn’t be a problem in resorts. But when in malls, local shops, restaurants, and cabs, it’s challenging. Learn some basic Indonesian phrases. Here’s a list of phrases I made to help you out!

It’s hard to Get Vegetarian Food

Being a vegan or vegetarian in Batam is hard. The traditional local delicacies here like the  Nasi Padang comprise chicken and fish as their prime ingredients. It’s difficult to get vegetarian food in most Indonesian Cuisines. At least the curry that you eat along with rice would be of chicken flavor.

While I’ve no issues being a non-vegetarian myself, my mom finds it difficult to eat outside. We get groceries from Singapore to make many Indian dishes at home. Luckily, there are many Indian restaurants (and other cuisines) here for vegetarian food. Some of the popular ones are Maharaja Restaurant and Taj.

People are hospitable here

Comparing most places I’ve been to, people here are kind regardless of whether you know Bahasa Indonesia or not. Go walking and strangers will smile and bow at you as a greeting. Feel free to smile back and say hi!

Download Grab or Gojek

Local taxis get expensive and public transport isn’t very reliable in Batam. While taxis had a monopoly on their pricing before, making their rates, Grab and Gojek, similar to Uber, have made it reasonable for transport. Download either of the apps or both for transportation.

Also, consider renting a car/van in Batam – it’s a cheaper option with reasonable fuel prices compared to taking cabs to all places.

vietnam camp cars

Payment in Indonesian currency

It’s confusing to people whenever I explain Indonesian currency to them, so I decided to add it to this Batam travel guide. The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) always has more zeroes than one expects.

It’s a little tricky, but you’ll get used to it. 10,000 IDR equals SGD 1 (or USD 0.71). There are 1000 rupiah coins and the max currency note goes up to 100, 000 IDR. Thus, the last three digits in the Indonesian Rupiah are similar to the cents in a dollar. It costs around 5000 – 10,000 IDR to purchase a cheap pen here. So it’s pretty much of the same value as most Southeast Asian countries.

Regarding payment methods, cash, and cards are prominent for everyday transactions. Payment apps, like GoPay, are still emerging and are best for paying for your Gojek rides. As for cards, Visa and MasterCards (Maestro) are widely accepted in Indonesia. Citibank and HSBC offer great foreign exchange rates for ATM withdrawal services.

Batam Suggested Budgets

Accommodation : For budget stays, it costs anywhere between SGD 6 – 12 (IDR 60,000 – 120,000). Look for reasonable stays between this price range and check up on the whole place before paying. Stays by Oyo and RedDoorz have great value for money for private budget rooms. Some trusted sites to book from are Agoda and Booking.com.

Food : Expect to spend between IDR 25,000 – 50,000 per meal. While the local Indonesian food like Ayam Penyet and Kosong Parata costs less. Seafood that shouldn’t be missed out costs higher. But overall, it’s much cheaper than Singapore. IDR 100,000 -150,000 on food per day (SGD 10 – 15) is a reasonable budget.

Transport : This is the tough part to figure out. For solo travelers with just a backpack, I recommend using Gojek or Grab Bike (or the local Ojeks by the road). The apps give better rates than local ojeks , but not all places might have availability. Since most people visit in groups, there are plenty of rental car services with Avanza and Agya being some popular options.

perfect batam travel guide

The budget options cost anywhere between IDR 250,000 – 300,000 per day (SGD 25 – 30) depending on the service, car type, and availability. Make sure to book them early. If not, the last resort is the mass transport options such as Carry and Bimbar. Read more on getting around Batam here .

What to Pack for Batam

For Batam, and most parts of Indonesia, it’s best to keep your clothing light – shorts, sandals, flip-flops, and hats should be on your mind when visiting Batam. But to name a few, here are some things to pack for Batam, Riau Islands:

  • Light clothes and swimwear
  • Flip-flops and Sandals (Shoes and socks only if you’re particular about attires, and trek shoes for some trekking here)
  • Sunglasses and sunhats
  • Headcaps and sun lotions
  • Backpack, of course

batam travel guide, things to do in batam

Indonesia, being a tropical country, there aren’t many essentials to carry around. Keep your clothing light based on the length of your stay. Keep fewer clothes in case you’re planning on shopping in Batam.

A good pair of shoes and sunglasses will do. But wear a head cap when you go out , the heat is unbearable sometimes. To those with skin issues, bring sunscreen lotion.

2D1N Batam Itinerary β€” Weekend Getaway with Adventurous Things to Do, Hidden Beaches and Cafe-hopping

batam trip blog

A Bali-esq getaway gem that’s only a one-hour ferry ride away.

Quiet Turi Beach in Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

Things to do in Batam? Get a massage, eat, Netflix and chill in the hotel room with a box of donuts β€” end of list. At least that’s what I thought!

I never imagined I’d be able to run on empty beaches, visit a deer sanctuary, or go on adventurous activities like hiking and go-karting, while also relaxing in between with spas and cafe hopping.

After doing all that and more in this 2D1N Batam itinerary, it’s safe to say that I’ve discovered a side of Batam I haven’t experienced before and I can’t wait to share it with you!

Check-in at Harbour Bay Marriott Hotel

View from hotel room at Harbour Bay Marriott Hotel, Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

My two friends and I are the kind of travellers who’ll pick hostels over hotels but since we travelled in a group of three and agreed to split the cost, we decided to live it up a little and stay at Harbour Bay Marriott Hotel which came up to S$87/pax for the night.

The beds and bathrooms were luxurious but we were especially taken by the alcove window. If we didn’t have to be out and about, we’d definitely be spending the entire day in this room.

Infinity pool overlooking the sea at Harbour Bay Marriott Hotel, Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

The view from our room!

The pool opens from 6AM to 8PM daily and there’s a 24-hour gym right beside it.

Cost: ~S$261/night for a Deluxe Guest Room Address: Harbour Bay Downtown, Jl. Duyung, Sungai Jodoh, Kec. Batu Ampar, Kota Batam, Kepulauan Riau 29453, Indonesia

*Pro-tip: Use code <THETRAVELINTERN> on Klo ok to get 5% off hotels and activities * with a min. spend of S$50 (discount cap at S$15) at checkout. One-time use only! (* – list of excluded activities )

Explore Wisata Ocarina Batam

Ferris wheel at Wisata Ocarina Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

Did you know that there’s an amusement park in Batam? Wisata Ocarina Batam has classics like the giant carousel wheel, viking, and an elevated spinning-swing-thing. And it’s only Rp15,000 (~S$1.50) per ride 😲

Here’s what really amused us though, we went on a Thursday afternoon during the non-peak period and all rides were closed. But since we were already there, we entered the grounds and got some dope pics of us exploring an ‘abandoned’ amusement park!

Sitting on a ride at Wisata Ocarina Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

For those who like some seriously quiet downtime, pack lunch and hang at one of the many gazebos β€” you’ll likely be the only ones there.

*Pro-tip: Go during weekends or public holidays to go on rides. Plus, there are foam parties on some weekends too, check their Instagram for updates.

Entrance fee: Rp15,000/child, Rp25,000/adult Cost: Rp10,000 – Rp15,000/ride Opening hours: 8AM – 10PM (Mon – Fri), 7AM – 10PM (Sat), 6AM – 10PM (Sun) Address: Sadai, Bengkong, Batam City, Riau Islands 29444, Indonesia

Coffee Run at Next Level

Pavillon at Next Level, Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

On the way to lunch, our Gojek driver recommended that we make a quick stop at Next Level to check out the immaculate vibes. Glad we did cause we felt like we were at a much quieter Tanjong Beach Club !

There are plenty of outdoor seats on the beachfront and some in the back under the shade too if you’re not a fan of the sun.

Outdoor sea-facing seats at Next Level, Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

They also converted a breakwater into a bar β€” a pretty cool concept if you ask me! And with prices here being very reasonable, time will slip away but your hard-earned moolah won’t.

Rock Bar at Next Level Cafe, Batam

I would have loved to have their specialty Next Level Nasi Goreng (Rp45,000) or hang out at the sea-facing bar. But since we were fuelling up at our next location, I only got myself an iced peach tea (Rp28,000) this time around!

Opening hours: 9AM – 12AM Address: Gold Coast Batam, Batam City, Riau Islands 29432, Indonesia

Lunch at Golden Prawn

Food at Golden Prawn, Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

Golden Prawn 933 is a great kelong seafood restaurant to have freshly cooked local dishes at a reasonable price point! We got to pick out fresh fish for the sweet and sour dish Rp67,000 (~S$6) and decided on the staple sambal kangkong Rp110,000 (~S$10) plus a tofu hotplate Rp123,000 (~S$11) for our meat-free pals!

Tofu egg dish at Golden Prawn, Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

We didn’t expect this much egg hiding under all the tofu but it was so good we had no complaints! But the sambal kangkong could have been spicier though 🌢️.

Cost: ~Rp100,000-Rp168,000/pax (~S$9 – S$15/pax) Opening hours: 9:30AM – 11PM Address: Jl. Golden Prawn, Tj. Buntung, Kec. Bengkong, Kota Batam, Kepulauan Riau 29458, Indonesia

Racing at Golden City Go-kart

Sitting in go-karts at Golden City Go-kart, Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

Zooming around at Golden City Go-kart while having mini competitions with each other was one way to override the impending food coma.

We’ve never tried go-karting before but after a short safety briefing, we were speeding like pros and had a great time 🏎️. It turned out to be pretty straightforward even for non-drivers like us. I never considered go-karting an activity to do when I’m looking for fun but now I might just try the courses we have in Singapore!

Tickets for go-karting experience at Golden City go-kart β€” Things to do in Batam

All tickets allow for 10 minutes on the track β€” but I think it was clear we didn’t want to leave so they let us have a few more rounds since it was just us on the tracks!

There’s also an option for a double go-kart (Rp250,000) which gives you the chance to sit beside your bestie and let them steer you if you have severe apprehension about being behind the wheel.

Cost: Rp200,000 for a single Go-kart Super Car Opening hours: 8AM -5PM Address: Jl. Bengkong Laut, Tj. Buntung, Kec. Bengkong, Kota Batam, Kepulauan Riau 29444, Indonesia

Archery or Air Rifle at Belalang Adventure

Entrance to Belalang Adventure, Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

After our go-karting fun, we walked 5 minutes to the nearby Belalang Adventure β€” a multi-activity playground offering high-element courses, paintball games, archery, ATV, and air rifle experience!

Using an air-rifle at Belaying Adventure, Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

Between the three of us, we split 15 arrows for a round of archery and 30 pellets for the air rifle experience β€” we had enough fun this way and it allowed us to share the cost too! We spent about 40 minutes here but they seem generally chill about how long you take to finish your round as long as there are not many visitors.

*Pro-tip: Call in to check if the high-element course is open β€” it might be closed on some days for routine maintenance.

Cost: Rp60,000 for Archery and Rp100,000 for Air Rifle Opening hours: 9AM – 5PM Address: Golden City, Bengkong Laut, Kec. Bengkong, Kota Batam, Kepulauan Riau 29444, Indonesia

Dinner at a Cheryl Signature Cafe

Front facade of Cheryl Signature Cafe, Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

For dinner, we headed to Cheryl Signature Cafe β€” a casual diner by the waterside. There’s a wooden floating platform that extends into the water where we could lounge. The platform was more stable than expected though so I didn’t feel any semblance of floating at all.

Having drinks at the floating platform of Cheryl Signature Cafe, Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

The vegetarians amongst us had the crΓ©me spinach pasta (Rp35,000). We also ordered a chicken salted egg rice bowl (Rp28,000) and non-alcoholic mojitos (Rp25,000). The food came in surprisingly large portions despite the price and was pretty filling.

Food and drinks served at Cheryl Signature Cafe, Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

The cafe is a prime spot to catch the sunset but unfortunately, it was kind of gloomy when we were there. Plus, it started drizzling halfway through our meal, so it was a good thing there are sheltered seats here too!

Opening hours: 11AM – 12AM Address: Bengkong Laut, Batam City, Riau Islands, Indonesia

Nightcap at Altitude Bar, Marriott Hotel

Signature bartender drink at Altitude bar on top of Marriott Hotel, Batam β€” Things to do in Batam

A drink I had at Altitude Bar β€” tastes very much like rum!

One of the perks of staying at Marriott Hotel is the Altitude Bar ! Since it opens till late, we dropped by for a nightcap here after an eventful day.

*Pro-tip: You can request for a bartender specialty drink if you want an aesthetically-pleasing shot for the gram!

At Rp190,000 (~S$17) each for our bartender specialty drinks though, prices here are a little steep. But we tried a drink each anyway so we could stay for the vibes.

The drink I had is a perfect choice if you’re a rum kinda person β€” which I’m not. But at least the pictures turned out pretty! If you don’t need a picture for the gram, I’d recommend you to stick to your usual order instead.

Having drinks at Altitude Bar, Harbour Bay Marriott Hotel, Batam - Things to do in Batam

Regardless, observing the Singapore skyline while vibing to a live DJ at the bar was pretty fun! Eventually, we moved away from the bar and ventured to the left-most part of the roof β€” towards an area with circular tables for a quieter experience.

Opening hours: 5PM – 11PM (Sun – Thu), 5PM – 12AM (Fri – Sat) Address: Roof level, Batam Marriott Hotel Harbour Bay, Harbour Bay Downtown, Jl. Dying, Ken Sungai Jodoh, Ken Batu Ampar, Batam 29453, Indonesia

Breakfast at Harbour Bay Marriott Hotel

Buffet breakfast at Harbour Bay Marriott Hotel Batam - Things to do in Batam

The breakfast spread at Marriott Hotel was indulgent, to say the least β€” there are cheese platters, noodle bars, pastries, local and Indian cuisine, and a free-flow juice bar.

I started with some butter croissants then moved on to a mushroom omelette and proceeded to have multiple servings of Indonesian fried rice. Buffet breakfast starts at 6AM and ends at 11AM β€” I’d say get a bang for your buck and be the first to enter and last to leave the dining hall πŸ˜‰

Hike at Panbil Nature Reserve

Palawan Forest at Panbil Nature Reserve - Things to do in Batam

Panbil Nature Reserve was newly opened in 2022 and from what our guide shared with us, there will also be high-element courses available within the park soon!

We took on the guided Semar Hiking Package (Rp250,000/pax) β€” which includes a guided hike in the Palawan Forest Area, visiting the Sambar Deer Sanctuary, and a meal voucher.

The Semar Hike isn’t a relaxing hike in the forest looking at pitcher plants like we thought it’d be. It turned out rather challenging β€” we even found ourselves swinging from vines at one point! But it was all good fun and we were looking forward to interacting with the deers afterwards.

Feeding Sambar Deers at Panbil Nature Reserve, Batam - Things to do in Batam

So en-deer-ing 🦌

We got a chance to feed the deer while visiting the Sambar Deer sanctuary. But do take note β€” although feeding is included in the package, deers are notoriously elusive animals so whether or not they’re up for a nibble is anyone’s guess!

Either way, even if you don’t get to feed them, watching these graceful Sambar Deers from the perimeter of the fence is still a treat though! Cause we can almost never spot them in Singapore.

Fun fact: It’s quite common to find quartz crystals while on a hike here too, although it definitely takes a trained eye! Ask your guide to show you some of his finds or you can buy one off him for ~Rp55,000!

After feeding the deer, it was time for us to grab a meal. Using our meal vouchers, we had good old Indonesian fried rice and noodles for lunch at the in-house cafe. Plus, free coconut water too!

*Pro-tip: Contact Panbil Nature Reserve on WhatsApp for ease of communication and booking of the hikes.

Opening hours: 10AM – 6PM (Mon – Fri), 9AM – 6PM (Sat – Sun) Address: Jalan Kantong Semar, Panbil, Batam City, Indonesia

Popping by Sense Coffee & Pool

Sitting by the pool at Sense Coffee & Pool - Things to do in Indonesia

Sense Coffee and Pool has quite a cool concept β€” cafe-goers can choose to hang at the indoor or outdoor seats, or get a cuppa and have a dip in the pool!

Catching up on some emails here wouldn’t be a problem either β€” we spotted at least five power points!

Doing some remote work at Sense Coffee & Pool - Things to do in Indonesia

There’s an array of dishes here from western to local food all ranging from ~Rp28,000 to Rp50,000 and drinks start from Rp16,000. We kept things simple and got some iced caramel lattes (Rp29,000) which were alright for the price point.

They accept card payments so don’t worry about having to bring too much cash!

Cost of pool entry: Rp50,000 for unlimited hours Opening hours: 9AM – 8PM (Mon – Sat), 8AM – 9PM (Sun) Address: Komp. Centre Park No. 3, Taman Baloi, Batam Kota, Batam City, Riau Islands 29432, Indonesia

Bar Pools and Sunset at Turi Beach

Having drinks at the pool bar of Turi Beach Resort - things to do in Indonesia

A 30-minute Gojek ride later, we found ourselves at Turi Beach β€” a private beach only accessible to guests of Turi Beach Resort . But thankfully it’s not that exclusive, we were allowed in after paying an entry fee of Rp150,000 πŸ˜‰.

Best part is that the price includes a set meal that offered us a choice of local fried rice or noodles and a cold drink, usage of the pool, and pool towels!

Looking at the jetty at Turi Beach Resort - Things to do in Indonesia

We weren’t told what time we had to leave the resort premises so we ended up spending 4 hours alternating between hanging out on the beach swings, drinking at the pool bar, and walking on the jetty.

As someone who values peace and quiet, the entry fee is well worth it. And since there’s no time limit, no one’s stopping you from lounging out here the whole day.

Total Relaxation at Absolute Spa

Spa room with jacuzzi at Absolute Spa - Things to do in Indonesia

We ended our trip with a Full Glow Spa Package (~S$36) at Absolute Spa and were treated to a foot bath, body scrub, body mask, and access to the sauna.

To top it off, the package included a specialty treatment of choice so between the three of us, we chose head and shoulder massage, ear candling, and facial acupressure treatment!

Ear candling at Absolute Spa - Things to do in Indonesia

I got the ear candling treatment β€” this removes earwax and is believed to alleviate sinus symptoms! It really looks much more intense than it feels, I was actually so relaxed that I eventually fell asleep to the soft crackling sounds of the fire and gentle massaging of my pressure points.

We also really loved the fact that our rooms came with a built-in jacuzzi and shower so we didn’t have to move from one room to another. And being served iced-tea, ginger tea and tapioca chips post-treatment was just *chef’s kiss*.

The clean rooms and friendly staff definitely added value to the experience! If I were in Batam again just for a day, I’d definitely call in and make an appointment before catching my ferry back.

How to Plan a Quick Weekend Getaway in Batam

View of the sea from Wisata Ocarina - Things to do in Indonesia

I didn’t think Batam had this much to offer but now that I do, I’ll be thinking of the next time I can lounge on Turi Beach and have another relax-sesh at Absolute Spa .

Here are some tips if you’re planning your own weekend Batam itinerary.

1) Book a Ferry

Book your ferry tickets online (~S$73/pax for two-way) a few days in advance β€” remember to arrange for a return trip as tickets get snapped up fast, especially during the weekends.

*Pro-tip: Use code <THETRAVELINTERN> on Klo ok to get 5% off the ferry and activities * with a min. spend of S$50 (discount cap at S$15) at checkout. One-time use only! (* – list of excluded activities )

Also note that you’ll need to exchange your e-ticket for a boarding pass at Sindo Ferry’s counter, located on level three of Harbourfront Centre.

2) Register for E-sim

Check that your phone model is compatible with an eSIM, which is much more hassle-free. We got the 3-day package (~S$8 inclusive of 1GB data per day) and activated it on our phones just 10 minutes before boarding the ferry from Singapore!

3) Convert Currencies at Harbourfront Centre

Cash is still king in Batam so it’s best to have a little more on hand!

If you don’t have time to get cash changed beforehand, check out AGM Money Changer at Singapore Cruise Center . It’s located on the second floor right by the ferry departure gates and opens at 7AM daily!

4) Insurance

Last and most importantly, remember to get travel insurance in case of any unexpected circumstances. We got ours with Travelcare’s Essential Plan (S$4.30/day), which also covers Covid-19 related expenses.

5) Accommodation

Batam has four harbours β€” Batam Center , Sekupang , Harbour Bay and Nongsapura . So pick your accommodation wisely to reduce travel time from harbour to hotel!

Although Marriott Hotel is a 20-minute Gojek ride from Batam Center where we disembarked, we picked it anyway for the luxurious experience! Alternatively, HARRIS Hotel (~S$57/night) is right beside Batam Center.

It’s pretty simple to prep for a trip to this neighbouring island and now that you know of these things to do in Batam, a mental reset is just an hour and a weekend away!

Ultimate 4 Days Batam Itinerary

Batam Riau Islands is one of the few lesser-known tropical places in Indonesia. Over the years, it’s gained a lot of popularity in tourism for its low-expense holidays. I’ve lived in Batam for almost a decade and here’s how you can build your Batam Itinerary for 4 days.

To cover most must-visit places in Batam Riau including a stay at an exotic beach resort, you need no more than 3-4 days. It is a small city where only a few spots like the Barelang Bridge need more than an hour’s drive. Though a city, there’s not too much of a hustle and bustle. Take your time and wander the island at your own pace.

Like most of Indonesia, the people are hospitable and calm. So make yourself comfortable as you tread through this Batam Itinerary for 4 days.

Batam Itinerary for 4 Days

This itinerary is based on my experiences of the places I’ve visited considering their best times and peak times. I’ve put this list together – including getting there and keeping the short 4 days span in mind. Plan your itinerary at your convenience.

Day 1: Arrive at Batam Center, Riau Islands

There are a handful of ways to get to Batam. The easiest way is via ferry from Singapore (HarbourFront or Tanah Merah) to Batam. While you can choose your preferred terminals to land in among the 3 to 4 terminals across Batam, the most popular ports are Batam Center and Sekupang.

If you’ve booked a beach resort already at Nongsa or some other spot, Nongsapura and Marina Waterfront ferry terminals are better options. Tourists usually head straight out here to their resorts like Nongsa Point and Turi Beach and avoid the city traffics.

But if touring the place is your priority, I’d recommend at the heart of the place – Batam Center. When coming to different parts of Indonesia or Malaysia, getting to Batam via the Hang Nadim Airport is also an option.

getting to batam riau by ferry

Visit the Barelang Bridge

The first must-visit spot in Batam is the infamous Barelang Bridge. It constitutes of 6 bridges that connect the main Riau Islands – Batam, Rempang, and Galang Islands. Hence the name Ba-re-lang! While it’s no more than a set of bridges to look forward to, the 1st bridge is the main feature to visit.

Hung high by enormous cables to two massive towers placed in between the islands, it makes up for one of Batam’s most iconic spots.

Start driving here early in the morning (or right away if you’ve arrived in the morning). Traffic in the evenings and weekends here can get crowded. When you’re here, don’t miss out on grilled corn (called Jagung ) and coconut water at the street stalls after the bridge. They’re some of the best corn I’ve had!

batam itinerary for 4 days

Swim at Mirota Beach

With dozens of beaches to find on Batam’s map, it’s hard to find an ideal place to swim and sit on the beaches. Even if it is clean, it’s always crowded. Mirota Beach is one of the few sweet beaches on the Barelang route.

Get here early after stopping at the Barelang Bridge. The mornings are calm and empty for a swim. When I visited, the weather was perfect and the waters – though not crystal clear – were sweet for a dip.

Most stalls aren’t open early, so have your breakfast before getting here or get it with you. We swam for an hour or two before bathing and getting back on our way.

Have Seafood at Cita Rasa Restaurant

How can one not have seafood in Indonesia (unless you’re vegetarian, of course)? Cita Rasa seafood restaurant is just 40 minutes away from the Vietnamese Camp. Located on the Cita Rasa port, the road connectivity is terrible and parking isn’t great either.

But people do visit from around for its fresh offbeat and local seafood! Either Cita Rasa or there are a few other seafood options on the Jembatan Barelang path. Most seafood places by the sea aren’t very different from one another.

To name a few, some well-known seafood places around Galang and Rempang Islands are Indah Jaya Seafood, Lucky Seafood on bridge 5, or Barelang Seafood at bridge 1. Try not to get too far from Galang Island as your next stop is the Vietnamese Camp.

Drive through the Galang Refugee Camp

Further down a few bridges on Galang Island is the Vietnamese Refugee Camp. This is no more than a short 1-2 hour drive through the camp. You’ll need a nominal fee to enter. Step down at the museum and through the Galang camp pictures if you wish to.

When you drive through, you’ll pass by an old hospital, a cemetery, and even a police station which were all used back in the days by refugees!

Visit the Maha Vihara Dutriya Temple

Towards the evening, give the Maha Vihara Dutriya Temple before you head to your resort. The Buddhist temple features large statues of Buddha in various forms. I somehow visit it every time I visit Batam as the whole place gives a sense of relief and peace.

It makes a perfect end to a long day with calmness. A walk around the temple takes around 1 – 1.5 hours at most. There’s also a buffet-style vegetarian restaurant at the back of the temple that’s worth trying.

Batam Itinerary for 4 Days: Check in your resorts

There’s no hard and fast about choosing the best resorts in Batam. All of them are more or less the same. But to recommend, I’d say stay at a beach resort. Some all-time popular ones here are the KTM Resorts, Nongsa Point Resort, Turi Beach, and Harris Hotel.

Carry no more than a small backpack with you while touring the island. It gets really hot here and carrying large luggage around can be tiresome. Unless you’ve rented out a car, check-in and keep your luggage at the resorts.

Since Batam isn’t that big, feel free to book one of the mentioned resorts above for your entire trip. You can get back to the same resort after touring throughout the day. Most places in Batam take no more than an hour’s drive.

kiki beach resort batam

Day 2: Begin with Water Sports at Harris Resorts

Speaking of diving in Southeast Asia , Indonesia boasts its rich natural availability for it. Harris Waterfront Resorts is just one spot for watersports. If you’re looking for a specific watersport like kitesurfing or cable wakeboarding, these are pretty big sports in Batam and attract flocks of adventurer seekers here over the weekend for affordable rates compared to their home country. If you are looking for more relaxing and less technical water sports that are kids-friendly, when staying at resorts like Nongsa Point, Turi Beach, or Nuvasa Bay – request if they offer watersport facilities.

Some all-time watersport places are Montigo Resorts, Turi, and Max Dive’s centre for diving. For wakeboarding, some well-known spots are Cabana Club at Turi Beach and Waterfront City (Harris Resorts). A newer spot coming up is the Batam Wakepark specifically for Wakeboarding.

Leave snorkeling out for now as there’s a special spot for it. The most common activities here are banana boat rides, kayaking, and jet skis.

Have lunch at Love Seafood / Harbour Bay Seafood

Seafood again! Don’t miss out some great places like the Love Seafood in Batam Center or Harbour Bay Seafood. If you’re along with a group of 4-6, get the buffet deal at Love Seafood where they have a variety of options on the same tray.

On my visit, we got the buffet option with chilly crabs, fried prawns and squid, soft fish meat, and seashells – it was a LOT of food. It’s worth the visit.

Go shopping at malls and hit a spa!

If Batam’s famous for something – it’s seafood, resorts, and spa. There are tons of spa spots in Batam. The best area to find your preferred spa is Nagoya Hills. This part of Batam is popular for cheap shops and massages.

Get to the Nagoya Hill Mall which are dozens of spas including the Eska Wellness Spa and Reborn Batam. As for shopping, there are varieties of individual stores to check out in Nagoya. Practice your bargaining skills here!

If not shopping, stroll through the food stalls aisle at one end of the mall for some inexpensive Indonesian delicacies like curry puff, Roti’O, and Kue Putu!

Dine at Sederhana Padangnese

It’s a disgrace not to try the Padang cuisine in Indonesia. Luckily, there are Padang restaurants in all corners of Batam – some bigger than the others. But for the best, any local will recommend a Sederhana restaurant joint.

The nearest Sederhana Padangnese to the Nagoya shopping mall is no more than 10 minutes away. When you’re there, tell them which animal meat you eat and they’ll bring all the varieties of it to your table. Don’t worry, they’ll charge only for the plates you’ve taken!

batam sederhana padangnese restaurant

Day 3: Take the Pulau Abang Trip

Reserve a full day for snorkeling at Pulau Abang Island . Indonesia is known for its coral reefs but it’s hard to find those snorkeling spots, especially for tourists. Pulau Abang isn’t a resort (or hotel for that matter), it’s a small homestay organized by the locals of the island.

The whole day is organized on the package where pickup, meals, snorkeling gear and timings all come on a single package. But the most interesting part is snorkeling itself.

Snorkeling at Pulau Abang’s crystal clear waters and Dedap beach with natural white sands to be is one of Batam’s must-do experiences. The aquatic life lies right beneath our flippers no more than a meter away!

abang island batam riau

One site to book your Pulau Abang is EnjoyBatam – check out all the package details here as well. Being a local spot, only call reservation is available now. Request a local (or your resort) to help you out with the package booking.

Day 4: Stay at Kiki Beach Resorts

The Kiki beach is no doubt just another resort. What makes it unique is it’s a private beach not accessible by road unless you’re off-road through the woods. Situated on the Galang Island, the resort hosts a boat for pickup from a port on Rempang Island.

You can book one day and night stay where they pick you up at a specified time in the morning and drop off the following day. The remoteness of the spot where only tourists staying at their villas have access to the beach for that night makes it a luxurious experience.

With the civilization and Batam’s mainland far off, there was no city lit sky in sight. I felt blessed to experience the dark night’s sky ignited with stars. The villas itself are something to experience. Made up of large air-conditioned tents and floor-to-ceiling glass panels for entrance and bathrooms, it was worth the expense.

With no place to get around aside the beach, villa, and the long boardwalks – the resort is inclusive of kayaking and squad bikes.

kiki beach resort

More things to do in Batam Riau

I felt that Kiki Beach Resort is worth spending a day with its unique private beach service. But if you’ve had enough of resorts, the itsy bitsy stuff left to do in Batam is shopping and eating.

People come to malls like BCS, Nagoya Hill, Grand Batam, and Mega Mall for its great variety of clothing, shoes, and bags. Nagoya Hill and BCS are great to look for niche items in clothing and accessories and can even try out your bargaining skills here!

For food, some other things to try out in Batam is the evergreen Martabak Paratha. They’re called kosong paratha (very different from the Indian Paratha) given along with chicken curry. Some other food joints to try out at malls are Bakso Mie and Ria Resto.

On my last days in Batam, I went out to FreshBeer Batam Center where they have their own brewery. The more exotic part was their menu with choices of crocodile, snake, and deer meat! That sums up this post on Batam Itinerary for 4 days.

The best things to do in Batam, Riau Islands

Updated On 24th February, 2022

Are you planning on going backpacking in Indonesia? If you’re looking to go a bit off the beaten track when backpacking South East Asia , then you might be looking for some of the best things to do in Batam, Riau Islands…

Well, my friend, this is the blog post for you! In this post, I am going to share some of the best things to do in Batam with you, and as someone who lives there, I’ve got all the local secrets that you need to know when visiting this part of Indonesia .

Batam is a beautiful city that one must visit when travelling to Indonesia . Being offbeat and more close to nature, there are tons of exotic things to do in Batam. I’ve lived there for 8 years and this guide reveals my secrets to having the best summer vacation in Batam.

One good reason to visit Batam is for its calm and clear beaches. Unlike Bali , resorts here like the Nongsa Point and Nuvasa Bay are never crowded with tourists. Only a handful of fortunate people know about this island and that’s what keeps it authentic and more down to earth. For someone who like to be super away from the hustle-and-bustle of big cities or crowded bucket list destinations, and for anyone who wants to experience calm beaches and be closer to the local community, Batam is one of the best places to visit in Indonesia .

The locals here take you to crystal clear snorkelling spots to experience the untouched parts of Indonesia ’s rich coral reefs. Not to mention, Batam is easy to get to and also, everything costs less here! As someone who’s lived here for almost a decade and checked out what’s best to do and what not to do, here are all the top things to do in Batam from a local’s perspective.

Get your pen and paper at the ready, by the end of this post you’re going to know the best things to do in Batam, the best places to visit in Batam and the best adventures to add to your Indonesia bucket list.

How to get to Batam, Riau Islands…

The Batam Riau Islands are only 20 kilometres from Singapore. You can take a 1-hour ferry from Singapore’s harbour front, Singapore straight to Batam Centre or Sekupang. There are some ferries to choose from here like SindoFerry, BatamFast, and WaveMaster. I’ve always found the BatamFast ferry to be the most reliable one. It costs anywhere between 17-30 SGD for a one-way trip to Batam from Singapore.

Another way to get to Batam is by taking a non-stop flight from Jakarta to Hang Nadim Airport in Batam. But honestly, I’d recommend taking the ferry. It’s cheaper and takes less time. Also, who doesn’t like watching the water splash hard on the sides of a big boat!

Check out flights on skyscanner here.

Where to stay in Batam, Riau Islands…

For accommodation, some year-round resorts here are the Harris Hotel (Waterfront), Nongsa Point Beach, and KTM resorts. For budget stays, there’s plenty to choose from inside the city. But a resort stay by the beach is something you don’t get every day, so I’d be willing to spend on it even as a budget traveller.

The best things to do in Batam, Riau Islands, Indonesia...

1. walk on the barelang bridge and eat street-side grilled corn..

The Barelang Bridge is something you mustn’t miss out on when you visit Batam. If Batam’s known by an icon, it’s this very bridge. Oh is it pretty! The Barelang Bridge that hangs by its cables is the first of the seven bridges to many other smaller islands. Make sure you don’t visit on the weekends as this place gets crowded (naturally, as it’s one of the best places to visit in Batam!) and can cause traffic for hours. The evenings are the best time to visit the bridge.

Speaking of corn, right after you pass the Barelang Bridge, you’ll find many small stalls selling grilled corn by the road side. These come in different flavours and are a must-try in Batam. I never miss out on the corn when I visit Barelang and you shouldn’t either!

2. Try some water sports!

With more people visiting every year, there are a number of places to choose from for water sports, and they’re one of the best things to do in Batam. You’ve got everything from superfast banana boat rides to waterskiing and parasailing. While many beach resorts also offer watersport facilities, it’s better to opt for them separately as they cost more on the resorts for the very same experiences.

For those looking for scuba diving, check the availability, as not all of the water sports companies offer it.

If you want to go snorkellin in Batam, keep reading. There’s a very specific spot to go for the best snorkelling in Batam, and it deserves its own special mention…

3. Snorkeling on Abang Island

Abang Island is a small local island that’s a short boat ride away from Batam. It’s one of the best places to visit in Batam if you’re looking for an adventure, especially in the water! Snorkelling here is one of the top things to do in Batam and something that you shouldn’t miss out on when you visit. I daresay it might even be one of the best things to do in Indonesia!

You can book a 1-day snorkelling package in Abang Island. They’ll pick you up directly from your resort or Batam Center mainland. As many tourists are unaware of this spot, the waters they take you to are super clear. It’s an aquatic paradise with countless species of corals and sea animals. The snorkelling gear, flippers, timings for your dive, instructions, are all taken care of within your package.

4. Have Indonesia's authentic Nasi Padang meal for lunch

This isn’t an attraction, but it’s a dish to check out for food lovers out there and trying it is one of the best things to do in Batam! Nasi Padang or Padang Rice is a local speciality and you can find this in most parts of Indonesia. It originates from Padang Island and consists of rice that you eat along with various pre-cooked sides. Note that this is a not a vegetarian dish.

Having Nasi Padang in a restaurant and ordering it to takeaway are wholly different experiences.  It’s best to eat it at the restaurant. You get to see and pick the sides as they’re served hot and fresh. There are many places that serve Nasi Padang in Batam. But for the best quality, get it from Sederhana. The food here is sure to make your mouth water!

5. Sunbathe on the beaches of Batam

Without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Batam is to catch some sun!

For sunbathing and going for a dip in the ocean, go for Batam’s well-known beaches. The Nongsa beach, Pantayi Melayu, and Palm Spring beach are the most well-known beaches. In the evening, you can walk long stretches into the ocean when the water’s shallow and locals collect shells here. It’s a sight to capture!

Many resorts by the beach are great to stay in, have great swimming pools, and even have photogenic waves hitting against its sands. But most people don’t go to play in the water here. Tides are higher and it isn’t as safe – I’d recommend only taking pictures here and sticking to the beaches above for swimming!

6. Visit the Buddhist Temple, Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya

I’ve visited this temple dozens of times and it never gets old. The Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Monastery is the largest and most popular Buddhist temple in Batam, and one of the best places to visit in Batam. I’d recommend visiting it in the evenings before the sun’s down. The statues at the entrance are just marvellous to take pictures with and the place gets cooler in the evenings as you stroll through from one room to another observing various majestic statues.

Apart from the statues, the food is amazing here in the evenings and the temple is quiet at all times. As a kid, I loved the evenings here as many stalls and vendors with vibrant lit toys came around the temple entrance. It’s a must-do in Batam!

7. Stay at Nongsa Point Marina Resorts for the weekend

I always go to the Nongsa Points resort at the weekend in Batam. From private large chalets laid across on the hill by the beach, you get beautiful sunset views on the balconies through floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Yep, it’s exactly how it sounds – magical. The chalets, the small paths over the hills, the large swimming pool, and the delicious breakfast they provide, make it totally worth the money you’ll spend.

Many of the other best things to do in Batam tend to get busy and chaotic on the weekends, so it’s best to save those for during the week, book this resort for the weekend and relax to your heart’s content!

8. Eat seafood at Golden Prawn

There are many seafood restaurants in Batam to try, but Golden Prawn just has finger-licking good stuff. I’ve been to the restaurant quite a few times and here you get to choose your crabs and other fish. How cool is that?! With the Golden Prawn restaurant being an authentic popular seafood place, they’ve expanded to more than one resturant in Batam. But I’d recommend  the main restaurant, the Golden Prawn 933, that’s by the seashore.

Feeling the sea breeze while you savour the flavours of crabs, prawns, and shrimps is a whole ecstatic vibe and one of the best things to do in Batam. Anyway, the prices at Golden Prawn are high but it’s worth it once in a while.

9. Have fun at some water parks!

With the island being humid day and night, why not check out some of the water parks in Batam? These places are great for kids and are no doubt just as fun for adults.

The best water park I’ve been to in Batam is Batu Ajji Waterpark in the Top 100 mall. This water park was so vast that we spent a whole day playing here! Make sure to check you’re heading to ‘Batu Ajji Top 100’ when you’re visiting as there’s another Top 100 mall that it can be confused with. The water park is located right behind the shopping centre.

Another popular waterpark here is the Ocarina Waterpark, also called Coastarina, on the east coast of Batam Center. Apart from the water park, you can also go here to simply the enjoy the coastline, another one of the best things to do in Batam.

10. Go crazy for clothes at Batam's shopping malls

With more visitors and Singaporeans coming to Batam, nearly a dozen mega shopping malls have emerged here. Be it a traveller taking back souvenirs from Batam, looking to buy cheaper clothes, or simply have food – they’ve got it all covered!

Speaking of clothes, Indonesia is one of the major players in the textile industry. Clothes get exported from here to different parts of the world. As resources and labour are cheap here, garments cost less. For clothes, some malls that are best to check out are BCS (pronounced as Be Che Es in Indonesian), Mega Mall, Top 100, and Kepri Mall. Look for Matahari in these malls as they’re known to maintain quality products at affordable rates.

15 Best Things to Do in Batam (Indonesia)

Batam is just across the water from Singapore, so if you are looking for a weekend break to Indonesia then this is a great place to come. From Singapore it is a 40 minute ride to Batam on a speed boat and once you are there you can enjoy a huge range of activities far more cheaply than in many other parts of Southeast Asia.

The island is famous as a place where people come to relax and get away from it all and as such it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia. You won’t find a huge array of β€˜attractions’ like historical sites as such, but you will find a number of resorts, spas, restaurants and cafes, and the nightlife here is lively with a good range of choices if you are looking for some entertainment in the evenings.

Another reason why people flock to Batam is for the diving or snorkeling opportunities as the waters here are incredibly clear and visibility is excellent if you want to explore the underwater kingdoms in this part of Indonesia.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Batam :

1. Enjoy the water sports

Batam Cable Ski Park

One of the signature attractions in Batam is the water sports as it is located right next to the water.

In other places like Singapore the coast of water skiing or wakeboarding can really add up but in Batam you can enjoy these for a fraction of the price and one of the best places to do this is at the Batam Cable Ski Park.

Just some of the activities on offer here include canoeing, jet skiing, or even snorkeling or you can check out other famous resorts like the Batam View Beach Resort.

2. Visit Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple

Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple

This temple is one of the more serene ways to enjoy Batam and is the place to come if you want to find some inner peace.

Devotees here usually burn incense for good luck and you can enjoy the colorful and elegant Buddha statues here as well as the carvings of twelve zodiac signs which lie opposite the temple.

One of the best things about the temple is that there is also a cafe here and you buy a range of delicious vegetarian food including buns and snacks in the shape of cute animals.

3. Take a trip to Penyengat Island

Penyengat Island

There are a number of islands around central Batam Island that are perfect for day trips and one of these is the stunning Penyengat Island.

It is not one of the largest islands in the area and you can walk around it in around two hours which means that if you get here early you can go for a walk before spending the afternoon sunbathing and then catch the spectacular sunset.

One point of interest on the island is the local mosque called Masjid Kuning (Yellow Mosque) and legend has it that eggshells were used in its construction to make the walls stronger.

The island is also a great place if you want to get a glimpse of how locals live in the less touristy parts of Batam.

4. Dine on seafood

Batam Seafood

Batam is also known for its seafood which again is far cheaper than Singapore or other parts of Southeast Asia.

Some of the top picks for seafood in the city include the Sei Enam Seafood Restaurant as well as the Rezeki Seafood Restaurant and Harbour Bay Seafood.

If you are looking for signature dishes then try the chili crab which is famous in the region as well as black pepper crab and snacks like crunchy calamari.

Other underwater delights about here such as juicy prawns and even dine on freshly caught lobster which is usually simply grilled and served with white rice.

5. Travel along the northern coast

Duriankang Reservoir

Many people come to Batam and only check out the main tourist areas or take a boat to some of the neighboring islands.

If you want to explore a little further however then consider a trip along the northern coastline.

One of the best ways to do this is to hire a motorbike or a bicycle and drive past gorgeous lush jungles with sweeping vistas over the water on the other side of the trail.

The trail will take you along the Duriankang Reservoir and then along the pretty Nongsa Coast and if you choose to ride a bike then you can expect around a 30 kilometer ride from Nongsa Village to the end of the line.

6. Sunbathe on Nongsa Beach

Nongsa Beach

Nongsa Beach is one of the best places to come if you are in Batam and looking for some sand.

The beach has a relaxed atmosphere and is less crowded than some other places on the island.

It is also close to a range of amenities and you will find an array of eateries lining the beach that are a great spot if you fancy a spot of dinner or a drink while watching the sunset.

There are also some spas nearby and you can go for a paddle or a swim.

7. Watch the sunset at Barelang Bridge

Barelang Bridge

Barelang Bridge is one of the most iconic sights in Batam and people flock here in the late afternoon for the photo opportunities.

The bridge actually links main Batam Island with adjacent Galang Island and the bridge is a marvel of engineering as it majestically spans the water between these two islands.

If possible try to go around sunset for the best vistas across the water.

8. Have a massage

Massage

One of the reasons that people come to Batam is for rest and relaxation and as a result there are a wealth of spas here where you can soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a range of soothing treatments.

One of the most famous places to get a treatment is the Isabella Massage House although there are a huge range to choose from scattered across the city which will mean that wherever you go you will leave rejuvenated and relaxed.

9. Go scuba diving

Scuba Diving

If you are a diving newbie and want to get certified then Batam Island is the perfect spot to get your PADI certificate cheaply.

Some of the best places to dive here are located offshore from the main Batam Island and include Abang Island, Hantu Island, Labun Island, and Petong Island.

From Batam you can sign up for a course and will be taken out to the neighboring islands in a boat and the visibility here is amazingly clear so you will be able to take in a range of underwater creatures and this is a top spot if you like marine photography.

If you are already an experienced diver then you will also find a lot to enjoy here thanks to the huge selection of aquatic life in these waters such as sharks, rays, and turtles.

10. Play a round of golf

Batam Hills Golf Resort

Batam is a golfer’s paradise and you can enjoy not one but seven different ranges in and around the area.

These include the Batam Hills Golf Resort and the Palm Springs Golf and Beach Resort or you can go to the Padang Golf Sukajadi which is the most famous of all the courses here.

As well as enjoying a game of golf all the courses have bars and eateries attached so you can also get a bite to eat or enjoy a sundowner as you look over the idyllic rambling dunes.

11. Take a trip to Bintan Island

Bintan Island

Bintan Island lies close to Batam and is known for being a luxury retreat with a wealth of delightful high end resorts to choose from.

If you are not on a budget then you can think about staying overnight or you can just take a day trip to Bintan and enjoy the pristine white sands and the azure waters.

Bintan is slightly less busy than Batam and most people come here to chill out at one of the resident resorts on the island, so if you are looking to get away from the crowds then this is a good choice.

12. Check out the stilt houses in Tanjung Uma

Tanjung Uma

Many parts of Batam are incredibly modern but if you go out to the old villages then there are a wealth of historical relics to enjoy.

These include the stilt houses which are built over the water and this is an amazing sight if you have never seen traditional architecture like this before.

One of the best places to see these old fashioned stilt houses is in the sleepy fishing village of Tanjung Uma so if you are interested in local architecture and culture then this is not to be missed and shows a completely different side of this island.

13. Have fun at Ocarina Park

3D2N Batam Itinerary : Traveling Indonesia

3D2N Batam Itinerary

It was the time of the year that we wanted to explore a new destination. The beautiful Indonesian island Batam was on top of my travel bucket list. Without thinking further, we decided to visit Batam Island during last June school holidays. With delicious food, excitement, peace and relax, our Batam trip was a memorable holiday which we are full of memorable moments. This is why I want to share our 3D2N Batam Itinerary to help you plan your holiday to this beautiful Indonesian island. This 3D2N Batam itinerary is more suitable for families with young kids as we traveled with the kid.

I want to share this post before I come up with a complete Batam Travel guide. This itinerary will help you to plan your getaway as you can find what you can do in a 3 day 2 nights itinerary with kids.

Batam Island is a quick getaway destination for those who live in Singapore. Good food, shopping and activities to pamper are among the many reasons why people love to visit this beautiful island of Indonesia.

Well, now I am sure you like to read our travel story of visiting Batam. We planned visiting popular attractions of Batam, however with limited time available and as we travelled with our kid we ended up visiting only few places. But we spent time together as a family. So,here is our Batam 3D2N itinerary as a family with a kid.

3D2N Batam Itinerary

Planning our Batam Trip

As it was school holiday time, most of the hotels were fully booked. We found a decent hotel in Nagoya which is considered the main city of Batam. The nearest ferry terminal for Nagoya is Harbour Bay ferry terminal. Therefore we booked our ferry tickets to reach Batam via Harbour Bay ferry terminal.

3D2N Batam Itinerary

Check this post on how we planned our Batam Getaway !

Ah, I forgot to mention. We decided to use a ferry to reach Batam Island. As I mentioned in a post about fear for Traveling , actually I am afraid of sea travel or with anything water. But, I wanted to be brave this time. After all, ferry travel is comfortable and fun as it is a new experience for us. We didn’t face any fear for traveling or any motion sickness or sea sickness during the ferry transfer to Batam.

So, do you like to know our Batam 3D2N itinerary? Here it is. And it is a kid friendly itinerary which we spent more time as a family than visiting many places.

Our 3D2N Batam itinerary

Singapore harbourfront ferry terminal

Our ferry time was scheduled to 9.30am.It was early morning that we reached to Singapore Harbor front ferry terminal. Our ferry from Horizon Fast Ferry was really comfortable and we enjoyed our journey towards Batam Island.

journey with Horizon Fast Ferry

When we arrived at Batam, it took around 1 hour to customs clearance as it was crowded. It was school holiday period which is usually crowded in nearby destinations to Singapore.

3D2N Batam Itinerary

The moment we entered into Batam Island, we were really tired. However there are shops and cafes in the same building where customs offices are located. We found Malaya CafΓ© and headed there to have some quick meal before we check in to the hotel.

Malaya Cafe-Batam

After a quick meal, we visited Harbour Bay Mall as it is near to the Harbor Bay ferry terminal. However this shopping Mall looks deserted. Although there are few shops available with cheap rated items, those were not to our desire.

Finally, we decided to reach the hotel.

At the Batam custom office building, it is easy to hire a taxi to the city. There is a taxi counter with fix rates.

We hired a taxi to our Hotel which is in Nagoya and the rate was around SGD 5.

We checked in to Harmoni Hotel Batam . It was a nice spacious hotel which is great for a family holiday.

Harmoni Hotel batam

After spending some time in the hotel, we visited Nagoya Hill shopping mall to see around the main city of Batam.

Nagoya Hill shopping mall is a nice shopping destination in Batam with many items for cheap rates. Compared to Singapore prices, these items are cheap. We bought few items including handbags, clothes and some snacks.

Nagoya hill Shopping Mall

In Nagoya Hill shopping Mall, there is a floor dedicated for food. You can choose delicious food ranging from Indonesian delicacy to other cuisines.

3D2N Batam Itinerary

Anyway we were not hungry as we visited the McDonalds next to the hotel with the kid.Our kid was so happy to encounter the McDonalds outlet next to the Harmoni Hotel. πŸ™‚

3D2N Batam Itinerary with kids

Anyway, encountering a McDonald’s outlet next to the Harmoni Hotel helped us to keep the kid entertained. During any family holiday, I like to find some kid friendly activities to keep the kid without getting bored. So, we can enjoy a peaceful trip. πŸ™‚

After returning to the hotel, our dinner place was a small restaurant opposite the Harmoni Hotel Batam where we found Indian food.

Day 2 started with a plan to visit a Buddhist Temple in Batam. Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple is a few kilometres away from the hotel we stayed at. We hired a taxi to visit there.

Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple

Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple is a peaceful relaxing place. While we were looking at the statues and surrounding, kid enjoyed relaxing time in this spacious temple.

Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple

We had a plan to visit Batam Centre after visiting this Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple. However, kid was unhappy and he looked tired. We had to change our travel plan and returned to the hotel to spend time in relaxing activities.

Anyway,in this visit to Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple, I could capture some Batam street art and posted those in another blog post. Check that Batam street art too.

After our lunch at a nearby restaurant to the hotel, we spent the rest of the time at the swimming pool with the kid. He was so happy as he could play few hours. We booked Harmoni Hotel as it is one of the hotels in Batam with kids’ swimming pool facilities.

Swimming at Harmoni Hotel-Batam

It is time to return to Singapore. Although we were limited with time, we visited Nagoya Hill Shopping mall after the breakfast at the hotel. The first day we visited the Nagoya Shopping Mall, I noticed few more items to buy. As we didn’t visit other shopping malls such as Mega Mall and DC mall, finally we decided to visit Nagoya shopping Mall again.

Nagoya hill street art

Instead of hiring a taxi, we decided to walk to the Nagoya mall. We enjoyed walking to the shopping mall as it was a great opportunity to explore the streets of Nagoya. As we noticed, it is a less crowded city. We didn’t see any public transport vehicles. Check Nagoya street art

Batam Nagoya hill

After a quick walking tour and shopping a few items in Nagoya Hill shopping mall, we returned to the hotel for check out.

Our hotel stay was satisfied and the staff was friendly. It was easy to hire a taxi from the counter at the hotel entrance.

Harbour Bay ferry terminal

Check more photos of ocean and sky views on our departure back from Batam to Singapore by ferry . Those views were fabulous and therefore I thought it is worth sharing in a travel photo essay.

Sentosa views from ferry

We had a nice short holiday in Batam. As we live in Singapore, we have a hope to visit Batam again. Next time, we will plan our Batam holiday via the Batam Centre Ferry Terminal to explore the other side of this beautiful island of Indonesia.

Helpful information for planning your Batam Getaway

How to get there.

Batam is just less than 1 hour ferry ride away from Singapore. Therefore reaching Batam by ferry is popular among the travellers. You can book your ferry to reach either Batam Centre ferry terminal or Harbor Bay ferry terminal.

Our favourite ferry provider to Batam is Horizon Fast ferry . You can also book your ferry with Batam Fast or Majestic Fast ferry.

Ticket cost is around $50 per person, round trip.

Accommodation in Batam

Finding accommodation is not that difficult when you plan your Batam getaway. However, it is good to book your hotel before you reach there. Batam can be crowded during most of the long weekends as many people residing in Singapore like to visit Batam.

You can book accommodation ranging from luxury Batam Villas to cheap holiday rentals. However, be sure to choose a family-friendly hotel if you travel with kids.

We booked Harmoni Hotel through Agoda.

How to get around Batam?

Hiring a taxi is easier than you may think. At the ferry terminal and in shopping malls there are taxi counters. Therefore you can hire a taxi easily with the pre-decided rates. The taxi rates are displayed in the taxi counters for easy reference. Hiring a taxi from such a taxi counter is secure and convenient.

There are taxi counters in front of most hotels too. You can ask for help from the reception if you want to book a taxi.

There will be more posts on this 3D2N Batam getaway including a Horizon Fast ferry review and Harmoni Hotel Batam review. I will also share more photos from Nagoya City Walk .

Till that please share your comments. Have you been to Batam or any parts of Indonesia? Also, read our 3D2N Bintan itinerary which is a trip to another beautiful island in Indonesia.

Important information to plan your Batam Itinerary

Below are some resources to help you in planning your Batam itinerary.

Make stops at scenic viewpoints, beaches, and local cafes to soak in the beauty and savor the experience of this picturesque route.

You may take this trail on your own around Duriankang Reservoir and the Nongsa Coast. It will be about a 30km bike ride from Turi Beach/Nongsa Village, through Teluk Mata Ikan, then down the coast to Batu Besar, and finally through Citra Mas Housing estate to Tering Bay Golf.

You will find it littered at the shore with jetsams while rancid smells surround you. Do not let it deter you; this is reality, and you will see poverty alongside modernization and commercialization. You will also see the fishermen’s village of stilt houses that stood as a testament to Batam’s past of simplicity.

Explore the iconic Barelang Bridge, a series of six bridges connecting Batam with several nearby islands. Though incomplete, they hold a certain local charm. Many tourists come here for a different cultural view of Batam’s local life. This attraction takes about 45 minutes to drive from the city, but the journey is well worth it.

Welcome to Batam by Bonar Gultom on Flickr - flic.kr/p/eiisVn

We love to travel but with limited paid vacation leave and small budget, even a weekend getaway to Batam has to be planned and executed carefully so that we maximize our time to the fullest to sample the yummy Indonesian local food, and enjoy the relaxing and affordable body massage.

Our plan for a 3D2N Batam trip starts with everyone assembles at Harbour Front Ferry Terminal at 6.30pm in order catch a 7.20pm ferry on a Friday evening and return to Singapore on a Sunday evening. If this doesn’t work out as planned, we are still in time to catch the next ferry at 8.20pm. The worse scenario is to catch the last ferry that leaves Singapore at 9.20pm.

Day 1 : We met at Harbour Front Ferry Terminal at 6.30pm. Booked the 7.40pm ferry with Sindoferry to Batam Centre.

The ferry ride to Batam was about 45 mins and we reached Batam Centre at 7.30pm (Batam Time is one hour behind Singapore). Upon arriving, we used the connecting bridge to walk cross to Batam Centre Mega Mall for dinner. We settled at Warung Cobain, a popular Indonesia restaurant and ordered plenty of Indonesia authentic food that were finger licking yet spicy. Avocado juice with chocolate fudge is a drink you must order at Warung Cobain.

After dinner, we checked into our 3-bedroom chalet, Nongsa Point Marina & Resort for a good sleep.

Kampoeng Spa

Day 2 : At 8am, we had light breakfast at the resort as we would be visiting Kampoeng Totok & Spa. A 2.5-hour spa/body scrub/steaming costs about S$62.

Kampoeng Totok & Spa Komp. Mahkota Raya Blok. E No 1 Batam Centre Tel: 0778-7483258 Email: [email protected]

Our next stop was to go to Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall for lunch. But we did a detour to buy some tidbits like cuttle fish, prawn crackers and melinjo crackers from a wholesaler (Toko Badminton Penuin Snack) – they sell fresh crackers at cheaper rates since they are wholesaler and they are very generous for food sampling.

Prawn Crakers Shop

Around 1pm, we reached Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall and we had Ayam Penyet and A&W float for lunch. Then we proceeded to the hypermarket to buy cheap toiletries like Sensodyne toothpaste, Garnier face wash & Indonesia instant noodles. Some of us bought Kueh Lapis from the shopping carts at the Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall. After all the shopping, we shelved our initial plan of having a hair spa at Christopher Salon which is located in the same mall. We decided to buy some beer back to our cozy resort and threw a karaoke party.

A&W Float

At 7pm, after all the ‘screaming & yelling’, we went to Seafood Rezeki at Batu Besar for yummy seafood dinner. This seafood restaurant is built above the water and sells freshly cooked seafood. We ordered its signature dish – 3 black pepper crabs, salted-egg prawns, grilled scallops and sambal kang kong. The bill came out to be around S$12 per person which was very affordable.

Day 3 : In the morning, we had light breakfast again as we arranged two private body masseurs to come to our resort to do body massage for us. This 1.5-hour massage costs around Rp240,000 (S$32) per pax and has to be paid in Indonesian Rupiah(Rp).

Indonesia Local Food

After the body massage session, we lazed around at the beach and checked out at 2pm. For lunch, we ate at a local ‘zi-char’ stall where we ordered seafood soup, fried garlic chicken, kai lan and fried squids. After the sumptuous lunch, we headed to Mega Mall at Batam Centre to do our last minute shopping and took at 6.20pm ferry back to Singapore.

10 Short 3D2N Getaways to Johor, Batam or Bintan for that Impromptu Holiday!

We all need a short break now and then... especially since overseas travel is becoming the norm again. Quick getaways that do not require too long of a travelling time or too much planning - just pack and go with the kids!

batam trip blog

An easy 3D2N trip to either Malaysia, Batam or Bintan will do the trick. So I've compiled 10 getaway options - all of which are good for a 3-days-2-nights stay with the family. All of them are family-friendly, bursting with activities to keep the kids occupied!

So plan away! 😁

1. Talula Hill Farm Resort

(Kluang, Malaysia)

Situated a 1.5-hour drive from Singapore is a unique farm stay experience, with gorgeous cabins, farm animals and activities, and breathtaking views.

batam trip blog

Set in the foothills of Gunung Lambak in Kluang, Johor, Talula Hill Farm Resort is a fruit, animal, and vegetable farm which also happens to offer cabins for guests to momentarily escape the bustle of city life and soak in the tranquility of the resorts's surroundings.

batam trip blog

There are 4 types of cabins to choose from, ranging from the standard cabins for 2 pax to the Loft Cabins for up to 5 pax. For families of 5, book the Loft Cabin which is the most beautiful cabin of the lot. Three single beds occupy the first level while the loft level has a king-sized bed.

batam trip blog

Activities include a mini farm with animals like ducks, chickens, goats and rabbits, fishing, water dipping at the grotto and helping to harvest vegetables.

2. Kiki Beach Resort

(Batam, Indonesia)

Glamp over the sea at Kiki Beach Resort @ Batam! 😍😍😍

batam trip blog

If you have younger kids, there are also Lagoon Villas which are built on the main island and with direct access to the lagoon. I’m sure the kids will love jumping into the water right from the front porch!

3. Rainforest Treehouse

(Kulai, Malaysia)

If you have always wondered what it's like to stay in a Treehouse and spend the night in the middle of a forest, then the Rainforest Treehouse in Kulai will tick all the boxes for you.

batam trip blog

Located in the state of Johor, Malaysia, Rainforest Treehouse is a 40-min drive away from Singapore but the surroundings is completely different from the concrete jungle we know in Singapore.

batam trip blog

Rainforest Treehouse currently has four types of accommodation available for booking. Two of them are for 2 to 4 persons, and includes a loft where the 'bedrooms' are at. For larger groups, there is the newest Treehouse which is located near the entrance of the eco-resort which can fit 6 to 8 persons. Completed in 2021, this will be most suited for families with younger kids and elderly as one doesn't need to walk far to reach the accommodation.

But for the true blue Treehouse experience, you have to book the 3-storey Treehouse (for 5 to 7 pax), otherwise known as the 'Sunset' Treehouse.

batam trip blog

Spending one night in this 3-storey Treehouse, surrounded by the dense rainforest was a surreal experience. The temperature at night was even colder than my aircon preset temperature at home! πŸ˜†

batam trip blog

Oh, and even if you aren’t staying there, you can visit the hidden Rainforest Cafe too! The wood-fired bread and drip coffee is πŸ‘. Head to my full review post HERE for more details on what to expect.

4. Telunas Resorts (Riau Islands, Indonesia) Combining the sun, sand and sea in an all-inclusive resort with full comfort and no airport time, Telunas Resorts is all about long days at the beach - building sandcastles, fishing, paddling in a kayak, without the distraction of technology.

5. Sinar Eco Resort (Johor, Malaysia) Who says one needs to fly to Australia for a farm stay? Located in Pekan Nanas in Johor, Sinar Eco Resort is about one hour's drive away from Tuas Checkpoint. Not only can one stay in rooms constructed out of shipping containers, the resort is full of farm animals that kids can pet and feed. There is no better place where kids can come face to face with chickens, geese, horses, rabbits, cats, dogs, cows and goats.

batam trip blog

Nestled in the quiet tranquility of an oil palm estate, the resort provides the perfect atmosphere for families to embrace the countryside. There are a total of 8 air-conditioned containers in all, and each consists of a queen-sized bed, safe, TV, refrigerator and private bathroom. For larger groups, book the apartment rooms which come with three bedrooms each. Each bedroom can sleep 4 persons.

batam trip blog

The resort is split into two main areas which are separated by a gravel road. One area houses the accommodation and cafe while the other larger area is home to all of the farm animals and activities. If your kids adore animals, they will go absolutely bonkers here. Even better if they love FEEDING and CUDDLING animals! Besides the animals, families can go kayaking along a river, as well as taking a dip in its sheltered swimming pool.

6. Rimba Resort (Pulau Sibu, Malaysia) If you are looking to chill by the beach with only the bare necessities, then Rimba Resort is your answer. Located three hours from Singapore - 2.5 hours drive from Singapore to Tanjung Leman jetty and a 30-minute boat ride to Pulau Sibu, Rimba Resort offers the perfect place to relax without the usual resort frills.

batam trip blog

That's right: NO aircon, NO hot water, NO TV, and NO WiFi. But what you do get are 21 charming seafront chalets all within a stone’s throw away from the resort's 350m private beach. And the beach will be where the kids will be spending most of their time there, thanks to the gorgeous house reef. Trust me when I say the monkies had never seen so many clown fish in one single snorkel session. In fact, they they begged to snorkel every single morning... and afternoon!

batam trip blog

The resort is set up with a central dining room, lounge areas, bar, and sun deck. Meals are full board and are served at designated times. There is only one Family Chalet which comes with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, both with hot water showers while the other beach chalets each consist of one bedroom (1 queen bed, 1 single & 1 bunk bed) and one bathroom. Besides snorkelling, other activities to keep the kiddos occupied include fishing, kayaking, jungle trekking, board games, beach vollyball and a mini library. For parents, the resort is the perfect place to get away from it all, just by relaxing on the beach with a cocktail and a good book whilst watching the sunset. Address:  Pulau Sibu, Malaysia Website

7. Club Med Bintan (Bintan Island, Indonesia)

batam trip blog

Looking for a holiday where you can just kick back, relax and let the kids do all the planning of the activities? Then Club Med Bintan is the holiday resort you should be booking. The pioneer of an all-inclusive holiday where all meals, drinks and activities are included in the booking price, Club Med Bintan is j ust a short ferry ride from Singapore.

batam trip blog

From treating yourself to a beautiful spa perched on the rocks, or gliding through the air on a flying trapeze overlooking the sea, or honing your land and water sports skills, I would recommend at least a 3-night stay to truly experience what the resort has to offer.

batam trip blog

Kiddos can be packed off to the Mini Club Med (4-10 years old) or Junior Club Med (11-17 years old) where they will enjoy a full day's worth of activities while parents can chill the day away by indulging in their own activities as well. Come every evening, there will be a night show and dance segment where everyone will be encouraged to join in the revelry. Kids can even order all the mocktail bar counters!

8. Montigo Resorts, Nongsa (Batam, Indonesia)

batam trip blog

Montigo Resorts, Nongsa is THE place to head to with the kids for a luxurious and fun-filled getaway. A 40-min ferry ride from Singapore and a mere 5-min car ride away from Nongsapura Ferry Terminal, the resort is Batam’s first 5-star all-villa resort with villas dotting the coastal shoreline offering unobstructed magnificent views of the South China Sea. The villas come with three floors of living space, each one boasting a private infinity pool—right outside the living room.

batam trip blog

The two storey Tilo Kids’ Club will be a hit with the kids! The first level houses several cubicles with game consoles like Wii and Xbox Kinect to keep older kids entertained while the entire second level is littered with toys, books, boardgames, three tube slides and a ball pit. The Kids’ Club also has a wading pool for kids. Sign the kids up for the full-day or half-day programmes (chargeable) and staff at the Club will look after them, while parents sneak off to indulge at the Montigo Spa.

9. UK Agro Farm (Johor, Malaysia)

batam trip blog

Situated in Johor - about an hour’s drive from Singapore - UK Agro Farm Resort is Malaysia’s largest goat and sheep farm, with 100 acres of grazing land for 4,000 sheep. It offers a farmstay experience in the form of the ‘Long House’, a traditional house structure that has its roots in the Iban community in Sarawak. Built on stilts and with long corridors, the rooms overlook vast green meadows and grazing pastures. Rooms come with the usual amenities like air-conditioning and water heater so they are pretty decent, clean and functional.

batam trip blog

There are tons of farm activities to do such as touring the Herb Sanctuary and Mushroom and Fruit Farms to learn all about plants. The highlight of the farm tour is probably feeding and cuddling sheep at the Sheep Farm. Kids can try bottle feeding baby goats, or feeding grain to ostriches at the Ostrich Park. For the adventurous, try your hand at the Sheep Challenge where participants are given 3 minutes to catch a sheep in an enclosure, and they stand to win a prize if successful.

10. Lotus Desaru (Johor, Malaysia)

batam trip blog

Located on the southeastern tip of Johor, the Lotus Desaru Beach Resort offers apartments (1–4 bedrooms) with living and dining areas, as well as a kitchenette (microwave and fridge). In addition to fun at the beach, there are various activities that families can enjoy while at Desaru. Visit the nearby Desaru Fruit Farm and Ostrich Farm for a fun-filled educational day. Or go on an evening Fireflies Cruise where kids will see these fascinating insects light up the trees.

batam trip blog

With a massive ‘spash-tacular’ water park situated in the middle of the resort, what do you think? Water park features include numerous water slides, a water playground and a huge tipping coconut - all of which are guaranteed to elicit squeals and screams from delighted kids. Don’t miss the Lazy River - a meandering slide that starts at the top of a slope and brings sliders down four water channels and three whirlpools!
