Our course takes you along the most scenic spots in Bruges. You get to see the most famous places of interest from a totaly different perspective. Find more info on some of the historic buildings herebelow.
1. Beguinage
The 'Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaarde' with its white-coloured house fronts and tranquil convent garden was founded in 1245. This little piece of world heritage was once the home of the beguines, emancipated lay-women who nevertheless led a pious and celibate life. Today the beguinage is inhabited by nuns of the Order of St. Benedict and several Bruges women who have decided to remain unmarried.
2. Saint John’s Hospital
Saint John’s Hospital has an eight hundred-year-old history of caring for pilgrims, travellers, the poor and the sick. Visit the medieval wards where the nuns and monks performed their work of mercy, as well as the chapel, and marvel at the impressive collection of archives, art works, medical instruments and six paintings by Hans Memling. Also worth a visit: the Diksmuide attic, the old dormitory, the adjoining custodian’s room and the pharmacy.
3. Church of Our Lady
The 115.5 metres high brick tower of the Church of Our Lady is a perfect illustration of the craftsmanship of Bruges’ artisans. The church displays a valuable art collection: Michelangelo’s world-famous Madonna and Child, countless paintings, 13th-century painted sepulchres and the tombs of Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold.
4. Groeninge Museum
The Groeninge Museum offers a varied overview of the history of Belgian plastic arts. Although the Flemish Primitives are a high point, you will also marvel at top 18th and 19th-century neoclassical pieces, masterpieces from Flemish Expressionism and post-war modern art.
5. Ambachtshuis Huidevetters
6. Belfry & Carillon
The most important of Bruges’ towers stands 83 metres tall. It houses, amongst other things, a carillon with 47 melodious bells. Those who take on the challenge of climbing the tower can pause for a breather on the way up in the old treasury, where the city’s charters, seal and public funds were kept during the Middle Ages, and also at the level of the impressive clock or in the carillonneur’s chamber. Finally, after a tiring 366 steps, your efforts will be rewarded with a breath-taking and unforgettable panoramic view of Bruges and her surroundings.
7. Liberty of Bruges
From this mansion, the countryside in a wide area around the city was once governed. The building functioned as a court of justice between 1795 and 1984. Today the city archives are stored here. They safeguard Bruges’ written memory. The premises also boast an old assize court and a renaissance hall with a monumental 16th-century timber, marble and alabaster fireplace made by Lanceloot Blondeel.
8. Fish Market
At first, fish was sold on one of the Markt’s corners, but as the townspeople complained about the stench, the fishmongers were forced to move and sell their wares here. In the covered arcade (1821), specially erected for the purpose of selling fish, fresh seafish was sold, a delicacy that only the rich could afford. Today you can still buy your fresh saltwater fish here every morning from Tuesday to Saturday.
9. Almshouses
Many small, whitewashed almshouses can be seen in the townscape of Bruges, mostly clustered around a cosy courtyard. These precursors of public housing were established in de 14th century by wealthy townspeople or guilds. They housed poor elderly people or widows. More than 46 blocks of almshouses have been preserved, scattered over the city, 43 of which are still occupied by elderly people.
10. Stepped gables
11. Burghers' Lodge
Right on the corner of Jan Van Eyckplein there is a striking building with a dramatic tower. The Poortersloge (Burgher’s Lodge) was built towards the end of the 14th century and the start of the 15th century and served as a meeting spot for the Genootschap van de Witte Beer (Society of the White Bear), a society of burghers. The leading burghers received traders in the lodge so that business matters could be settled in a relaxed atmosphere. It was a perfect location, as it was where the trading vessels moored before clearing their goods and was also close to the foreign-owned warehouses. The building served as the city’s Academy of Arts between 1720 and 1890, after which it did duty as the State Archives from 1912 to 2012.

Bruges by Boat: Tips for the Famous Canal Tour
The first thing that comes to mind for most people when they think of Bruges, Belgium, are serene winding canals abutted by quaint stone houses. The city’s famous canals give it the nickname The Venice of the North .
The thing that was most surprising to me about our trip to Bruges this July was how relatively inaccessible the canals are. There are few places where you can actually walk along the canal since they’re lined with buildings, so the main views are along the few, crowded bridges that cross the water. In order to really experience the canals and the beautiful buildings along the water, you need to be on a boat , which is why the canal tours are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city.
One of five boat landings for Bruges Canal Tour
Luckily, a canal tour is a relatively inexpensive way to experience the canals and architecture of this historic city. Here are some useful tips I learned based on our experience:
- There are 5 boat landings along the canals, but the route and price are the same for all ( 8 Euro for a 30-35 minute tour ). It’s only the start and end point that will vary, so my suggestion is to simply pick the one with the shortest line. We approached one with a relatively short line but decided to keep looking and found another one just a block away where we were able to walk straight onto the boat. Click here for a map showing the location of the five boat landings (link will open in a new window).
- The boats typically run every 15-20 minutes . The boats will also wait until the boat is full or nearly full before departing.
- The best seats for getting unobstructed photos are at the very front or very back. The boats have a row of single seats that run down the middle, which would be the worst for photos. It may be worth waiting until the next boat to come along if only middle seats are available.
- The tours run daily from 10:00am to 6:00pm (last boat leaves at 5:30pm) from March to mid-November . Bruges is flooded by cruise ship patrons and day-trippers during the peak hours of the day, so the lines are significantly shorter before 11:00 and become very long in the afternoon. Plan accordingly!
- Our boat driver/guide did a nice job narrating the ride, pointing out sights and answering questions for us along the way. We saw some boats with a recorded audio guide, which seemed less interesting. The guide asked everyone on the boat what language they spoke and carried out the tour in both English and French.
- The tour is cash only . You may also want to bring a few extra euros along to tip your driver.
Any other questions? Leave them in the comment section and I’ll try my best to answer them. Happy boating!

Experience the Bruges Boat Tour
You can’t visit Bruges without taking a boat tour and going on a little trip down the Bruges canals! Along with other cities, it is often referred to as Venice of the North… All the hustle and bustle of the city streets disappear as soon as you set off. It’s quiet besides the occasional tidbit of information from the driver, guiding you along the beautiful canals.
Unlike the canals in Amsterdam , the canals in Bruges are hard to get to by foot. You can walk down some of them, but there are quite a few areas where it’s just buildings on either side of the canal. By taking a boat tour, you’ll get to see the beautiful buildings and landmarks around Bruges from a completely different perspective, going under the numerous bridges and past these un-walkable areas that you wouldn’t have seen otherwise!
What happens on a Bruges boat tour?
Explore the Bruges canals by boat as the captain takes you on a tour between Jan van Eyck Square and the Beguinage. As you travel down the canals, the captain will give you a snapshot guide of the buildings you go past, giving an explanation and insights into the life and culture surrounding Bruges. Spot all the beautiful houses and gardens, see landmarks from a different viewpoint and just relax as you slowly meander down the canals.
Seating on the canal boats
These boats seat quite a lot of people on them, so you may feel quite close to people if it’s busy. The captains do tend to wait until the boat is full before setting off. It’s worth noting that there is a single row of seats that runs down the middle, so if you’re wanting to take photos it’s best to avoid that seat where possible!
How to find the Bruges boat tour starting points
There are five landing stages where you can embark on the canal boats. Whilst there are a few different companies running the tours, they all follow the same route and cost the same so there’s no need to worry about choosing the ‘right’ one. The only difference is your starting and ending points.
The boats appear regularly, and you can fit between 35-40 people per boat, so any don’t be put off by queues – they go down quickly!
You’ll find each company in the areas below. Here’s a map showing exactly where to embark on the boats, and the route that is taken.
- Venetië van het Noorden, Huidenvettersplein 13
- Coudenys, Rozenhoedkaai
- De Meulemeester, Wollestraat 32
- Gruuthuse, Nieuwstraat 11
- Stael, Katelijnestraat 4
How much does it cost to go on a boat tour in Bruges?
You can expect to pay around €12 per adult, and €7 for children – though children under 3 are free. This is one of the cheaper attractions that I spotted whilst visiting, and one that allows some time to relax! There are booths situated at each landing stage so they’re easy to find, but you will need cash to pay.
When do the Bruges boat trips run?
These boat trips run from early March to mid-November generally, with running times going from 10am to 6pm each day. It isn’t possible to pre-book your ticket for these boat tours. You simply turn up, pay at a booth and jump on the next boat available. It’s a simple process, though it can obviously get busy at peak times so that’s something to keep in mind.
