Unique Coffee Culture in Ho Chi Minh

Unique Coffee Culture in Ho Chi Minh

Rachel Tran

There is no doubt that Vietnam – the 2 nd  largest coffee producer in the world is well known for consuming coffee at a large amount. So here comes to Saigon, where drinking coffee has been an exclusive culture than any places of Vietnam.

Coffee Culture in Ho Chi Minh City

Strangers may clearly recognize Ho Chi Minh city as the city of both ancient and modern values with historical, cultural tourist attraction. But maybe to other wanderlusts, small things called coffee, street food, etc. are absolutely the unforgettable experience ever! No one knows exactly the number of coffee shops in the City as apart from many eye-catching coffees shops on main large streets, there are countless ones in cul-de-sacs and even in very small, meandering alleys. The diversity and popularity of coffee shops here has resulted in a spiritual culture with its own distinctive features in the daily life of Saigon.

When it comes to comparing the coffee culture in Hanoi and Saigon, if Hanoians would like to check in luxurious or branded coffee shops, Saigoners just need a cup of coffee, sitting on a plastic stool around where they feel comfortable and where they can freely chat with friends. Just no chair, no cake counter, the coffee here is served super quickly. All you have to do is just raise your voice and your favorite drink will come in less than 5 minutes! Normally, people call for black coffee or milk coffee and a cup of coffee costs around VND10.000 – a cheap price for a “coffee shop” in the city center in the most expensive city in Vietnam. So just try coffee your way here in Saigon!

Six Artisanal Coffee Spots in Ho Chi Minh City

Giang

Vietnam is a coffee drinking country. Coffee shops are where you will see many locals taking their afternoon breaks to have some of the local varieties of coffee such as egg coffee (Cà Phê Trứng) and iced coffee with condensed milk (Cà Phê Sữa Đá). Even chains from around the world have sunk their roots throughout Ho Chi Minh City. However, for some of us, we want not just good coffee, but excellent coffee. Here are six artisanal coffees spots that show the real potential of the local beans.

1 – The Workshop

2 – bosgaurus coffee, 3 – talk barista, 4 – la viet coffee, 5 – hue café roastery, 6 – saigon coffee roastery.

artisanal coffee spots

Now the name of this place might be confusing as it isn’t a place to make your own coffee, but instead, The Workshop is one of the many co-working spaces/ artisanal coffee spots that dot the landscape of Saigon. However, what sets this place apart from other co-working spaces is the attention to detail in their coffee.

You will notice at first by all of the different ways they have for brewing, to even the small selection of carefully curated beans that in the menu give you way more information than most will ever need to know. Watching them make your coffee is almost a show in of itself. They produce your hot or cold brew with scientific precision, measuring everything from the weight to the ideal water temperature. They even have a great food menu, so The Workshop is an excellent start of your day right in District 1.

Location: The Workshop – 27 Ngo Duc Ke, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh

ho chi minh city coffee tour

This is an artisanal coffee spot that is a retreat from the hectic city center. In fact, when you are at Bosgaurus Coffee, it feels like you are in another place. Nestled along the Saigon River behind Saigon Pearl you could spend the afternoon decompressing from the busy inner city. Plus, they are an award-winning coffee place with their awards displayed with pride in the shop.

The design is so clean and modern with the stainless coffee bar and high-tech machinery. It would be hard to find yourself peeling away from this coffee retreat. Of course, despite all of the fancy espresso machinery, they do not forget that making good coffee is simple at its core. They still use the pour over methods for those seeking it black and use K’ho beans which are known as the best in the country by many.

Location: Bosgaurus Coffee – 92 Nguyen Huu Canh, Saigon Pearl, Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City (all the way in the back)

artisanal coffee spots

This café is a small little escape from the noise of the big city. An excellent place for an excellently made cup of coffee from your usual expresso types to a well-made pour over. This is an artisanal coffee spot that understands coffee and gives you personal attention when creating your perfect cup. So much so you can even learn about the barista arts from the café’s zen-like master.

Considering the quality of their brews, you definitely would want to learn from such a master. The place may be small, but the coffee and design of the café make it feel more significant than it is. This place like many others on the list have found that things should be well made and in an environment that shows you they care. Coffee may be a tradition in Vietnam, but these places show its future.

Locations: Talk Barista Saigon – 81 Truong Dinh, Ward 6, District 3, Ho Chi Minh

artisanal coffee spots

Other places know truly well that coffee begins with sourcing an artisanal bean right from the source in Dalat. Hidden in an alleyway in District 3, this place will fill up fast with patrons. Serving excellent pour over coffee to more traditional likes such as Ca Phe Sua Da to even strange concoctions like a spicy coffee. This is a place to try!

The artisanal coffee spot from Dalat has now taken hold in its little corner in Ho Chi Minh City. It is a nice place to be amongst the locals who also appreciate a more exceptional cup of coffee.

Locations: La Viet Coffee – Alley 193, 191 Hai Ba Trung, Ward 6, District 3, Ho Chi Minh

ho chi minh city coffee tour

Now, this stop is not like the others as it is more of an upscale Vietnamese style café, but they take the usual local styles and elevate it for some quality coffee. While they do make excellent espresso-based coffees, the stand out is the Ca Phe Sua Da. They take this favorite brew and make it truly good.

Unlike other places, the taste of the coffee is still prevalent and not masked up with sweetness. Somehow Hue Café seems to have found the perfect balance of the sweetness and the roasted coffee to create this alchemical wonder of a Ca Phe Sua Da. For someone who likes the taste of coffee, this is a wonderful compromised between tradition and artisanal coffee.

Locations: Hue Café Roastery – 40 Thao Dien, Thao Dien Ward, District 2, Ho Chi Minh

Our final artisanal coffee spot knows quality coffee. Saigon Coffee Roastery shows this with their Dong Khoi location open about three years now and another spot on Dang Thi Nhu Street now as well. This is another exceptional place and the barista at least at the newer location is a master of his craft and can share with you everything you ever would need to know about coffee. This place shows they care with their staff and the top-quality equipment they use. No short cuts here.

Saigon Coffee Roastery 1 – 151 Dong Khoi, Ben Nghe, District 1, Ho Chi Minh

Saigon Coffee Roastery 2 – 12 Dang Thi Nhu, Nguyen Thai Binh Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh

Table of Contents

1. Why you should not miss Vietnamese Coffee in Ho Chi Minh City?

Coming to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), you have tons of things to do. Admiring beautiful long-standing French buildings perhaps is the first thing you should do. Then, you can learn about war history at the War Remnants Museum and Cu Chi Tunnels. You will go shopping and eating in a city which is considered as a paradise of shoppers and foodies. And do not miss trying amazing Vietnamese Coffee in Ho Chi Minh City, visit the best cafe, and buy some coffee home.

I have spent so much time exploring new and old coffee shops. I have been sitting in a cafe for a half day, just to calm down or finish my work. As a Saigon people, I love and passionate about drinking coffee. I think that any traveler needs some information, including what to drink, before he goes. It makes me write this blog to introduce to everyone everything about Saigon coffee. In this Ultimate Guide to Vietnamese Coffee in Ho Chi Minh City, I would like to share various types of coffees, where to enjoy and buy the best coffee in Saigon. This guide is written for coffee lovers, all the travelers coming to the city, and foreigners living in the city.

2. Differences between Vietnamese Coffee and Coffee in Your Country

The first thing I should tell you that Vietnamese coffee will taste different from your homeland. You may wonder what are the differences? You may be familiar with Arabica and cream which dislike the heavily strong taste of Vietnamese coffee. To Vietnamese and Saigon people, some coffee similar to Starbucks is too sour and bland, too light, and unimpressive.

What does Vietnamese Coffee refer to? Vietnamese Coffee refers to traditional Vietnamese roast and brew. It is the result of different types of coffee beans, different methods of brewing and roasting, the variety of additives, the way we drink, and the unique coffee culture. A thicker brew and a few over-roasted beans makes a distinct taste. Vietnamese coffees are different in different cafes and drink stalls so that each place is new to explore. Whatever you have tried some Vietnamese Coffee in Hanoi and Danang, a cup of coffee in Ho Chi Minh City is worth trying.

3. Types of Coffee Beans, Style of Roast in Vietnam

The following is a breakdown of different types of coffee beans and species that may be found: Arabica, Culi Arabica, Culi Robusta, Liberica, Excelsa, Civet (Weasel), etc.

Style of Roast

Traditional Vietnamese techniques involve roasting coffee beans very dark with some additives and fillers.

Different coffee types are mixed, Robusta is added to Arabica to relieve the blend of dullness and introduce pleasant acidity, and aroma. You can ask the sellers about ratios of the beans and names of these ratios when you buy coffee in Vietnam.

Additives elevate the palatability and savoriness of the bitterness notoriously harsh of coffee beans. Common additives include butter, salt, whiskey, rice liquor, sugar, fish sauce, chemical flavorings and fragrances such as hazelnut, vanilla.

Fillers are used to darkening, thicken, and sweeten the coffee. Some recipes include up to 50% fillers. Popular fillers are soybeans, red beans, corn.

Some common Vietnamese coffee terms

Powder (Bột), Unground coffee bean (Nguyên hạt), Roasted coffee beans (Hạt rang), Pure coffee (Cà phê nguyên chất), Ground roasted coffee (Cà phê rang xay), Instant/dissolvable ground (Hòa tan), Civet coffee (Cà phê chồn), Liberica and Excelsa coffee (Cà phê mít);

Artificial fragrance (Hương/Mùi), Butter (Bơ), Liquor (Rượu), Sugar (Đường), Salt (Muối), Fish sauce (Nước mắm).

4. Types of Vietnamese coffees in Ho Chi Minh City

Different brewing methods.

Coffee is brewed differently in Vietnam. As a result of different brewing methods and special tools, Ho Chi Minh City has 2 traditional types of coffees which are brewed with drip filter and cloth filter.

Drip Filter Coffee (Phin Coffee, Cà Phê Phin)

Phin Coffee was named after the brewing tool – Phin (French-style drip filter). The preparation process helps give Vietnamese coffee its particular style. Coarsely ground beans go into a Phin, which sits on top of the cup. The beans are weighted down with a thin lid, hot water is added to the Phin, and then the water slowly trickles through into the cup.

Stocking Coffee (Vot Coffee, Cà Phê Vợt)

Cà phê Vợt means “stocking coffee” – a direct reference to a cloth filter used to strain coffee ground. This method is popular among stalls before Phin started dominating the market. To make a cup of coffee, the roasted coffee powder is put into the cloth strainer and cooked in a clay pot (or a small steel pot) on charcoal at medium heat. The coffee is kept warm in another pot on charcoal and served customers.

Most of the coffee shops in Ho Chi Minh City serve you coffee brewed by machine and Phin. Only a few old-standing Vot coffee shops still work in the city. I would like to share with you these hidden gems as below:

  • Am Phu Coffee Shop, 330 Phan Dinh Phung Street, Ward 1, Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City; Opening hours: 0:00 – 24:00; Prices: 15:00 – 40,000 VND
  • Cheo Leo Cafe, 109/36 Nguyen Thien Thuat Street, Ward 2, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City; Opening hours: 5:15 – 18:45; Prices: 13:00 – 21,000 VND; TripAdvisor: Cheo Leo Cafe .

On this Ho Chi Minh Sightseeing Tour by Motorbike, Tracy’s team will show you lots of tourist attractions and brilliant gems in back alleys. One of the highlights of the tour including enjoying Vietnamese coffee at a local cafe.

Different add-ins

Saigon people love to drink brewed coffee or have it with various add-ins. Some people prefer to drink coffee hot, others like coffee with some ice. That is the reason why there are many types of coffees which distinguished by extras.

Hot Black Coffee (Cà Phê Đen Nóng)

Black Coffee is dark and very dark roast coffee. It has its roots in the French colonial occupation of Vietnam but has evolved into an entirely different beast. They use Robusta coffee instead of Arabica one to brew black coffee. So that the coffee is less sour and strong in flavor.

Hot black coffee is available for local people would like to enjoy the real taste of Vietnamese coffee. Locals people usually drink this type of coffee in the early morning or in the evening when it is cool. When it is hot, they tend to order some coffee with ice to beat the heat and refresh themselves. In fact, Black Coffee is the favorite of elderly and quiet people. Young people and active people do not want to drink slowly a little dark coffee sip by sip. Hot black coffee is usually served in a Phin on top of a small cup or a small glass. Customers sit at the tables and wait until the coffee completely finished. During that time, they can leisurely chat with each other, read magazines, surf the Internet, or do some works on their computers. They could add some sugar to the black coffee at their wish to balance the darkness and sourness. If you prefer Cà Phê Đen, drink as slowly as possible at first. It can make you “drunk”.

Iced Black Coffee (Cà Phê Đen Đá)

Ice makes Vietnamese coffee less dark and strong. You can choose your Iced Black Coffee with or without sugar. A glass of Cà Phê Đen Đá is a great choice on both hot days and rainy days. It can make you awake, refreshing, and energic.

Iced Milk Coffee (Cà Phê Sữa Đá)

Iced Milk Coffee perhaps is the most popular Vietnamese coffee in Ho Chi Minh. The sweet, creamy, and greasy condensed milk, a little bitter and sour coffee, and ice blends amazingly. Note that there is no sugar in Cà Phê Sữa Đá. Fun facts: in the past, they use condensed milk because fresh milk and cream are rare.

Hot Milk Coffee (Cà Phê Sữa Nóng)

Hot Milk Coffee is the favorite drink of many people in Saigon. Similar to Hot Black Coffee, it is a great choice when it is raining or cold. Certainly, it is easier to drink in comparison to Hot Black Coffee.

Iced Coffee Milk (Bạc Xỉu)

While Black Coffee and Iced Milk Coffee are popular around Vietnam, Bạc Xỉu is known as a specialty of Saigon. It has been said that this kind of drink appeared in the 1950s in Saigon China Town. Chinese vendors serve hot condensed milk their customers but find out it is more delicious if they add some black coffee to the milk. In comparison to Iced Milk Coffee, Bạc Xỉu contains a higher proportion of condensed milk (about 80%).

Egg Coffee (Cà Phê Trứng)

Vietnamese Egg Coffee is one of 17 coffee drink over the world, listed by Buzzfeed. Egg Coffee can win the hearts of many locals and visitors thanks to the perfect blend of the brewed Vietnamese coffee, condensed milk, honey (optional), and egg white. Egg is the soul of this drink, it adds flavors and a source of protein to the drink. The bartender whisks vigorously all until it ends up with a fluffy mixture, pour the mixture into a nice cup/glass, and top it with frothy egg.

Below is 4 Best Egg Coffee Shops in Ho Chi Minh City:

  • RuNam D’Or, 3 Cong Xa Paris Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City; Opening hours: 7:00 – 23:00; Prices: 80,000 – 650,000 VND; Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RuNamdOr ; Website: https://runamdor.com.vn ; TripAdvisor: RuNam D’Or.

Coconut Coffee (Cà Phê Cốt Dừa)

Coconut Coffee has just appeared a few years ago in Hanoi. Cong Caphe is known as one of the first coffee shops that created Coconut Coffee recipe. This type of coffee has become popular in different regions in Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh. It is Vietnamese black coffee (or Espresso) topped with a mixture of black coffee (or Espresso), coconut milk, and condensed milk. The drink can be topped with shredded coconut meat. Most of the people love to add some ice to make the drink cool.

Where to drink the best Coconut Coffee in Ho Chi Minh City? I would like to recommend to come to:

Cong Caphe,  127 – 129 Bui Vien Street, Pham Ngu Lao Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City; Opening hours: 00:00 – 23:59; Prices: 30,000 – 100,000 VND; Website:  http://congcaphe.com/ ; TripAdvisor: Cong Caphe .

There are other Vietnamese coffees out there such as Avocado Coffee (Cà Phê Bơ), Salt Coffee (Cà Phê Muối), Cà Phê Ya Ua (Yogurt Coffee), Cà Phê Trái Cây (Fruit Coffee). However, they are not very popular in the city.

Canned/bottled Vietnamese Coffee

There are many canned/bottled Vietnamese Coffee drinks for your choice in supermarkets, at vending machines, convenience stores, drink stalls on the street. Almost beverage brands offer canned/bottled Vietnamese Milk Coffee drinks. Certainly, canned/bottled Vietnamese Coffee could not be compared with that in a coffee shop made by bartenders. However, it is a good choice if you are in a hurry but in a thirst. In addition, a takeaway plastic cup of coffee is not as convenient as a can or a bottle of coffee when you are traveling the city.

5. Saigon Coffee Culture

Where and when saigon people drink coffee.

Drinking coffee has become a very important part of Ho Chi Minh City (or Saigon). Coffee is not only a drink but also a cultural feature of the city. You can find hundreds of places to have a cup of coffee in coffee shops, at drink stalls on the street and in alleys, on moving carts, even motorbikes around the city.

Saigon people of all ages drink coffee. Coffee shops with free Wifi are the places where students study, officers works, businessmen meet their partners, friends and couples date. They may come to coffee shops to enjoy their drinks as well as the atmosphere of the shops. Or they buy a takeaway cup of coffee and drink at their places.

It is true that Saigon people drink coffee at any time of the day, from the early morning to the late night. They have coffee whether it is sunny or rainy. They drink coffee when they are working or studying. Coffee shops are also the best places for dating and meeting. The phrase “Đi cà phê”, which means Let go to drink coffee is one of the most familiar phrases of Saigon people.

Different Places to Drink

Cà phê bệt (sitting-plump coffee).

Have you ever drinking a cup of coffee while sitting plump around a coffee stall? Why not experience the way of enjoying coffee in Saigon. Sitting-plump Coffee is a Saigon’s unique cultural feature that exists for hundreds of years. In the past, people usually buy coffee from street vendors who do not offer them places to sit. As a result, they find a nearby area where they can squat or sit plump on old newspapers.

Some of the most famous places where Saigon people gather for a drink, play guitars, talk to each other:

  • Turtle Lake , Pham Ngoc Thach Street, Ward 6, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Notre Dame Cathedral , 1 Cong Xa Paris Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.
  • 30/4 Park, Han Thuyen Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.

The is very cheap there, a cup of coffee costs less than 20,000 VND. The areas are the most crowded in the evening when you should come and experience Cà Phê Bệt.

Alley Coffee (Cà Phê Hẻm)

Are you planning to visit an alley in Ho Chi Minh City? Most of the things you can read and be advised are Notre Dame Cathedral, Saigon Cruise, War Remnant Museum, etc. If you have a chance to troll into an alley, you can see a small drink stall with a few old tables and stools. The stalls sell cheap drinks, including coffee. You may wonder who are the customers. The answer is the people who live in that alley. “Hẻm” means alley in English, that is the reason why we call this way of enjoying coffee Cà Phê Hẻm. Today, some coffee shops which are located in houses or apartment building in narrow alleyways, are also called Cà Phê Hẻm

8. Tips on buying a cup of Vietnamese coffee in Ho Chi Minh City

  • You can be more familiar with coffee that is aromatic, slightly sour with a gentle bitter aftertaste. It is easier to get “coffee drunk” when you drink our coffee. You should take it slow first to see if your body can get used to the sudden surge of caffeine. Black coffee perhaps is the strongest coffee so that be careful with it.
  • Prepare small money to pay at coffee stalls on the streets and in alleys. The price is quite cheap and vendors may not accept the big notes such as 500,000 VND or do not have small change available.
  • At some stalls, they mark the prices with K letter which stands for 1,000 VND. For example, 15K means 15,000 VND.
  • You can buy a cup of coffee made from deadly cheap and dirty coffee on Ho Chi Min City streets. This does not mean all street vendors sell dirty coffee.
  • Not all of the places have menus written in English. Some Vietnamese vocabulary you should know to order a cup of coffee at coffee shops/stall/moving carts: Cà Phê (coffee), Đen (black), Nóng (hot), Đá (ice), Sữa (Milk), Dừa (coconut), Trứng (Egg).
  • Special notes: There are abundant lists of the best coffee shops in Ho Chi Minh in some blogs and articles on the Internet. I have referenced to them before writing this blog and found that some of the shops are closed permanently, addresses or opening hours have been changed. Check carefully before you go. You can follow the facebook or website links and see if they are active on Facebook. Google can help to let you know that the coffee shop is closed permanently. Contact them via Facebook Messenger or try to call the coffee shop (if phone numbers are available). I will do my best to update the information about coffee shops in this blog as soon as possible. So that you can read the right information and have the best coffee experience in Saigon.

As mentioned above, you can buy Trung Nguyen and Me Trang Coffee at supermarkets. It is safe to buy there because the prices are fixed and the coffee is original. Some good supermarket near tourist areas in the city are as below:

  • Vincom Center, 72 Le Thanh Ton Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City; 500 m from Notre Dame Cathedral; Opening hours: 9:30 – 22:00;

Buying coffee at local markets

However, the products are not as diverse as at coffee shops and coffee kiosks in local markets. At the markets, you can choose from many kinds of products. The downside is that the real price is up to 50% less than their original asking price. Thus you must bargain to get the best price and it may be a hassle for you. Fake coffees are popular in many countries, including Ho Chi Minh City. So that you can buy coffee at local markets in case:

  • You are a coffee professional;
  • A local friend goes with you;
  • You book a Saigon shopping tour .
  • You have limited time in the city and must buy the coffee on the Ho Chi Minh City tours which take you to markets.

Some big markets in the city are as below:

  • Ben Thanh Market Le Loi Street, Ben Thanh Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City; Opening hours: 5:00 – 23:00;
  • Tan Dinh Market, 1 Nguyen Huu Cau Street, Tan Dinh Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City; Opening hours: 6:00 – 20:00;
  • Binh Tay Market, 57A Thap Muoi Street, Ward 2, District 6, Ho Chi Minh City; Opening hours: 9:00 – 21:00;

Buy coffee online

  • A tour for coffee lovers in Da Lat

Handpicking berries on the K'Ho farm. All photos by Christian Berg

A sensuous, full-cup fragrance announces the arrival of your first cup of K’Ho coffee. Take a sip. You’ll find the flavour is generous but balanced, rich with rounded notes of caramel and almond. It’s nothing like the bold and bitter robusta usually served across Vietnam, the strongest cups of which can turn you euphoric to despairing within an hour. This coffee rolls smoothly across the tongue, flicks on tiny switches in the brain, and fills the nose with pleasure.

dalat vietnam

Welcome to the K’Ho Coffee Farm and Roastery , where outstanding coffee is an everyday thing. The farm owes its success to an enterprising family, and a trove of heirloom Arabica cultivated from seeds brought to Đà Lạt  a century ago. The farm’s half-day workshops -- which follow traditional methods of processing from tree to cup -- are easily among the best coffee experiences in the country. Prepare to do a little work, drink a lot of coffee, and learn something entirely new.

Vietnam’s first coffee trees.

coffee tour vietnam

Nestled on the slopes of Langbiang Mountain, the garden cafe at K’Ho Coffee Farm is surrounded by rustling coffee trees. Deep in the soil, the roots share a history stretching back to the late 1800s. The French were the first to bring Arabica seeds to Vietnam from Africa. In 1912, the colonisers founded a resort town for themselves in Da Lat City, 10 kilometres away, and enlisted the ethnic K’Ho minority in the area to tend their coffee trees.

The K'Ho had essentially become Vietnam’s first coffee farmers.

The K’Ho (or Ko Ho) are a nomadic minority, one of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups. In the past, the K’Ho often built their hamlets in remote highland regions. K’Ho families live mainly off the land, and practice a rich culture of craft weaving, folklore and music. Maps show the K’Ho were cultivating the fertile soil around Langbiang Mountain before the arrival of the French. By the early 1900s, the K'Ho had essentially become Vietnam’s first coffee farmers.

dalat coffee tour

Somewhere in the 1940s, K’Ho farmer Brai Co Lieng got his hands on Arabica seeds from the French coffee trees, and sowed them in his family farm at the base of the mountain. The Co Lieng family maintained the crop, but it was only many years later that fourth-generation coffee farmer Rolan Co Lieng would find a way to grow it into a sustainable business. With the help of her family and husband, an agricultural engineer from the United States, in 2012 Rolan founded the K’Ho Coffee cooperative, which grows, roasts and sells coffee descended directly from the Old World coffee seeds.

Updating the family business

Arriving at the K’ho farm in Bonneur’C Village, the first thing you’ll notice is how rustic it feels. Coffee seeds dry on screens outside the gift shop. Inside, the shelves are strewn with ethnic textiles, colourful crafts, and bags of richly scented beans. A wooden hut in the garden serves espresso and pour-over coffee with a view of Langbiang’s mountain farms.

Rolan’s family, including her brother DuLick Moul, run the business out of their home. The co-op provides work for 50 ethnic K’Ho families. Together they grow, process, and sell extraordinary Arabica coffee using only organic farming practices. With roasting and selling done by K’Ho Coffee, farmers receive a better income than they would through a middle man, and commit to follow agroforestry techniques that protect the environment.

coffee tours in vietnam

It’s a fresh way to run an age-old industry, and the proof is in the product. K’Ho coffee consistently ranks in the high specialty range (from 84 to 89) in cupping tests. To learn what’s involved in making a world-class cup of coffee, you only need to spend a morning at the village farm.

A hands-on approach

There are at least 15 steps to the creation of K’Ho coffee. After a quick introduction to the farm, take a walk between the coffee trees to see the berries up close, learn about the varieties of Arabica, and see agroforestry in action on K’Ho farms. Later, the guide will show you each stage in the process of coffee-making, employing the same methods the K’Ho have used for years.

The proof is in the product.

K’Ho Coffee uses three types of processes: washed, natural, and honey. The coffee is selected and harvested by hand, wet-milled on site, and after fermentation is left to dry for up to 20 days. When the time comes, hulling is done manually using a wooden mortar and pestle and the chaff separated by winnowing. Your biggest challenge may be sorting the seeds, which requires a sharp eye and careful hand. Only the best, unblemished seeds will make it to the gratifying steps of roasting, grinding and cupping.

vietnam coffee tour

Throughout the workshop, the K’Ho guide offers small insights — a bite of a berry, an explanation of a term — that expand the appreciation of the work. The tour culminates in some very rewarding moments of brewing and tasting. Carry your cup to the garden cafe to savour your coffee in Dalat’s springtime sun. The fact that your coffee is sustainably grown, cleanly processed, and supporting local farmers is an enriching thought. Another thought: It’s delicious. You’ll probably want to grab a few bags before you go.

A half-day coffee tour at the K’Ho village farm costs 700,000 VND per person, including lunch. The gift shop and garden cafe are open from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday. To book tours or for more information, visit www.khocoffee.com .

K-pop band Tempest picks Ho Chi Minh City to hold debut concert for world tour

Tempest, the K-pop group featuring Vietnamese member Hanbin, has announced Ho Chi Minh City as the location for the debut live concert for their world tour, with only one performance scheduled for June 15 at Phu Tho Indoor Stadium.

The live concert is set to kick off the group’s first world tour called World Premier: The First Eve Live 2024 Tempest Concert [T-Our: Tempest Voyage].

Most K-pop bands organize debut live concerts in their homeland, but Tempest is the first South Korean group to choose Vietnam as the maiden destination of its debut world tour.

This will be the second time Tempest has visited Vietnam.

In December last year, Tempest performed for thousands of Vietnamese fans at the Ho Chi Minh City International Music Festival, or HOZO 2023.

After their performance, songwriter Huy Tuan and Beyond Entertainment & Communication were selected to produce the group’s debut concert for their world tour.

Songwriter Tuan said that he hopes that the success of Tempest’s debut live concert will contribute to driving up Vietnam’s music industry and spurring the country’s international integration.

Why Ho Chi Minh City Is a Must-See Destination

L ovely Vietnam has too many visit-worthy destinations to count. But if you're in the mood for a large, modern city that pulsates with uncontainable energy, head to Ho Chi Minh City. Formerly known as Saigon, this was once the capital of French Indochina, as well as South Vietnam.

After the end of the Vietnam War, Hanoi became the capital, but Ho Chi Minh has remained the country's economic center. Spend your time here admiring the beautiful French colonial architecture while learning about its complex and difficult history. Visiting landmarks like the sobering War Remnants Museum, the Cu Chi Tunnel and Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon is a must.

While you tour, take frequent breaks to enjoy the delicious and unique Vietnamese coffee styles that include spins like egg coffee and yogurt coffee — trust us, they are amazingly good. Of course, the food will not disappoint. It's difficult to have a bad meal in Vietnam. And though there are various fine dining establishments here, you  have  to try the street food. Think of us while you're sitting on a plastic stool eating the best soup you've ever had in your life.

Are you ready to jump on the bandwagon?

How to Get to Ho Chi Minh City

Tan Son Nhat International Airport is the only aviation hub that services Ho Chi Minh City. It's also the largest airport in Vietnam.

When you  fly into Ho Chi Minh , you can take a bus from the airport to the city center. This service is very cheap. But if convenience is important, taxis are readily available.

Once in the city, you can move around by hailing tuk-tuks on the street. Or download Grab, a ride-sharing app similar to Uber.

Vietnam Alternative: Hanoi

After you visit Ho Chi Minh, hop to the north of the country to visit Hanoi. While still a modern city, the capital's large Old Quarter is large and charming.
