Boris Johnson kicks off a final farewell tour around the UK before his exit
Share this with
Boris Johnson will be packing his bags and leaving No 10 Downing Street in just one week’s time.
To mark the end of his controversial premiership, he will take part in a UK-wide farewell tour.
He is expected to highlight the positive things he’s achieved for the country as prime minister since 2019, The Times reports.
The Tory leader has previously noted his top achievements as getting Brexit done and steering the country through Covid lockdowns.
During the tour, he is expected to take a boastful tone, claiming the government has made progress in recruiting police officers, a manifesto pledge.
He also intends to highlight his successes with nuclear power and wind energy.
But his time as prime minister has been far from plain sailing – with Partygate, the refurbishment of his Downing Street flat and his response to the Owen Paterson lobbying scandal all memorable rocky moments.

It was a confession that he was aware of allegations about MP Chris Pincher when he appointed him deputy chief whip , despite his initial denial, that led to around 60 ministers resigning and forcing him out of office.
There are rumours he is planning to re-enter politics at a later date after he refused to rule out a political comeback today.
The exiting PM decided to focus on the government’s record introducing gigabit broadband to rural areas while in Dorset today.
According to him, only 7% of households had gigabit broadband when he entered office and this has now risen to 70%.
However, the intended target for every household to have gigabit broadband by 2025 will be missed with the rest of British households having to wait until 2030.
‘From Sherborne to Stirling, lightning-fast broadband is levelling up towns and villages across the country,’ Mr Johnson said on Tuesday.
‘I am proud that today more than 20 million households, businesses and organisations are able to tap into rapid and reliable internet, unleashing their potential, creating opportunities and driving growth across the country.’
The tour will continue across other parts of the UK this week as Mr Johnson says his final goodbyes.
When questioned on a possible future in politics, he replied: ‘I think on the whole people in this country are more interested in their gigabit broadband than they are in the fate of this or that politician.’
Meanwhile, the final two Tory leadership candidates are entering the final days of their campaigns.
Liz Truss is polled to be the next likely PM over Rishi Sunak, although anything can still change in the run-up to the announcement on September 5.
Ms Truss pulled out of a planned interview with BBC’s Nick Robinson due to air today because she ‘can no longer spare the time to take part’.

Boris Johnson's final speech as Prime Minister: 6 September 2022
Boris Johnson gave his final speech as Prime Minister on the steps of Downing Street.
Boris Johnson’s final speech as Prime Minister
Well this is it folks
thanks to all of you for coming out so early this morning
In only a couple of hours from now I will be in Balmoral to see Her Majesty The Queen
and the torch will finally be passed to a new Conservative leader
the baton will be handed over in what has unexpectedly turned out to be a relay race
they changed the rules half-way through but never mind that now
and through that lacquered black door a new Prime Minister will shortly go to meet a fantastic group of public servants
the people who got Brexit done
the people who delivered the fastest vaccine roll out in Europe
and never forget - 70 per cent of the entire population got a dose within 6 months, faster than any comparable country
that is government for you – that’s this conservative government
the people who organised those prompt early supplies of weapons to the heroic Ukrainian armed forces,
an action that may very well have helped change the course of the biggest European war for 80 years
And because of the speed and urgency of what you did – everybody involved in this government
to get this economy moving again from July last year in spite of all opposition, all the naysayers
we have and will continue to have that economic strength
to give people the cash they need to get through this energy crisis that has been caused by Putin’s vicious war
And I know that Liz Truss and this compassionate Conservative government will do everything we can to get people through this crisis
And this country will endure it and we will win
and if Putin thinks that he can succeed by blackmailing or bullying the British people then he is utterly deluded
and the reason we will have those funds now and in the future is because we Conservatives understand the vital symmetry between government action
and free market capitalist private sector enterprise
we are delivering on those huge manifesto commitments
making streets safer – neighbourhood crime down 38 per cent in the last three years
13,790 more police on the streets
building more hospitals – and yes we will have 50,000 more nurses by the end of this parliament and 40 more hospitals by the end of the decade
putting record funding into our schools and into teachers’ pay
giving everyone over 18 a lifetime skills guarantee so they can keep upskilling throughout their lives
3 new high speed rail lines including northern powerhouse rail
colossal road programmes from the Pennines to Cornwall,
the roll-out of gigabit broadband up over the last three years, since you were kind enough to elect me, up from 7 per cent of our country’s premises having gigabit broadband to 70 per cent today.
And we are of course providing the short and the long term solutions for our energy needs
and not just using more of our own domestic hydrocarbons but going up by 2030 to 50 GW of wind power, that is half this country’s energy electricity needs from offshore wind
alone, a new nuclear reactor every year
and looking at what is happening in this country, the changes that are taking place,
that is why the private sector is investing more venture capital investment than China itself
more billion pound tech companies sprouting here than in France, Germany and Israel combined
and as a result unemployment as I leave office, down to lows not seen since I was about ten years old and bouncing around on a space hopper
and on the subject of bouncing around and future careers
let me say that I am now like one of those booster rockets that has fulfilled its function
and I will now be gently re-entering the atmosphere and splashing down invisibly in some remote and obscure corner of the pacific
And like Cincinnatus I am returning to my plough
and I will be offering this government nothing but the most fervent support
this is a tough time for the economy
this is a tough time for families up and down the country
we can and we will get through it and we will come out stronger the other side but I say to my fellow Conservatives it is time for the politics to be over folks
and it’s time for us all to get behind Liz Truss and her programme
and deliver for the people of this country
because that is what the people of this country want, that’s what they need and that’s what they deserve
I am proud to have discharged the promises I made my party when you were kind enough to choose me,
winning the biggest majority since 1987 and the biggest share of the vote since 1979.
delivering Brexit
delivering our manifesto commitments – including social care
helping people up and down the country
ensuring that Britain is once again standing tall in the world
speaking with clarity and authority
from Ukraine to the AUKUS pact with America and Australia
because we are one whole and entire United Kingdom whose diplomats, security services and armed forces are so globally admired
and as I leave I believe our union is so strong that those who want to break it up, will keep trying but they will never ever succeed
thank you to everyone behind me in this building for looking after me and my family over the last three years so well including Dilyn, the dog
and if Dilyn and Larry can put behind them their occasional difficulties, then so can the Conservative party
and above all thanks to you, the British people, to the voters for giving me the chance to serve
all of you who worked so tirelessly together to beat covid to put us where we are today
Together we have laid foundations that will stand the test of time
whether by taking back control of our laws or putting in vital new infrastructure
great solid masonry on which we will continue to build together
paving the path of prosperity now & for future generations
and I will be supporting Liz Truss and our new government every step of the way.
Thank you all very much.

Boris Johnson sets out to defend record on farewell tour
Boris Johnson is kicking off a farewell tour of Britain today as he spends his last week as prime minister highlighting his achievements in 10 Downing Street.
Johnson travelled to Dorset to trumpet his government’s record expanding broadband to rural communities.
When Johnson took over as prime minister, only 7 per cent of households had gigabit broadband. That number has risen to 70 per cent today.
“From Sherborne to Stirling, lightning-fast broadband is levelling up towns and villages across the country,” Johnson was expected to say in a speech today. “In just three years we have increased the coverage of gigabit broadband from 7 per cent of households to 70 per cent.
“I am proud that today more than 20 million households, businesses and organisations

Boris Johnson refuses to rule out political comeback

Boris Johnson has refused to rule out a bid to return to power after he steps down as prime minister next week.
Challenged repeatedly during a TV interview over whether he could “rule out a comeback”, Mr Johnson failed to answer, insisting that voters were not interested in “the fate of this or that politician”.
His comments came as he visited Dorset at the start of a “farewell tour” week of regional visits designed to highlight what he regards as the successes of his three-year tenure as PM.
But his boasts about boosting rural access to high-speech broadband fell flat, as it was confirmed that the government’s target has been downgraded to connecting 85 per cent of homes and businesses by 2025, rather than the 100 per cent promised in the Conservative manifesto for the 2019 election.
Recent days have seen increasingly open speculation that Mr Johnson could make a bid to return to 10 Downing Street – like his hero Winston Churchill – if his successor Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak is unsuccessful in reviving Tory fortunes.

Asked today whether he could rule out a comeback, he replied: “I think on the whole people in this country are more interested in their gigabit broadband than they are in the fate of this or that politician.”
Mr Johnson declined to give himself a rating out of 10 for his term in office.
Asked about his plans after next Tuesday, when he is set to be replaced, he said: “I am concentrating on today.”
Former cabinet minister Rory Stewart earlier this week predicted that Mr Johnson may follow the example of ex-US president Donald Trump and former Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi in attempting a return to power after being ousted.
“He thinks he was badly treated, he doesn’t see the reality that he was a terrible PM,” said Mr Stewart. “I fear we are going to have a second Berlusconi or Trump, trying to rock back in.”
Mr Johnson said he was “proud” to have “delivered on what I said I was going to do” on broadband connectivity.
“I said we would try to get up to 85 per cent gigabit broadband – or 100 per cent gigabit broadband”, he said.
“We’ve gone from 7 per cent when I started to 70 per cent in three years in spite of Covid. That’s not half bad in my view.”
The Conservative manifesto at the last election promised to bring “full fibre and gigabit-capable broadband to every home and business across the UK by 2025”.
But this target was downgraded to 85 per cent in November 2020, and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) confirmed today that this remains the government’s goal.
Mr Johnson’s successor as Conservative party leader will be named next Monday, following the long drawn-out contest between Ms Truss and Mr Sunak, with the victor taking over as PM the following day.

'This is it folks': Boris Johnson delivers farewell speech as PM but hints at comeback
- Boris Johnson
- Tuesday 6 September 2022 at 10:02am
Boris Johnson has told the country "this is it folks" in his final speech as prime minister - but hinted at a comeback to frontline politics.
The outgoing PM described the transferring of power to his successor Liz Truss as "handing over the baton" as he lamented his premiership had "unexpectedly turned out to be a relay race".
In what appeared to be a swipe at the many who resigned from his government and ultimately triggered his downfall, he suggested he was forced out of power after "they changed the rules halfway through - but never mind that now".
But he said it was now "time for politics to be over" and joked that if his dog Dilyn and No.10's chief mouser Larry the cat can “put behind them their occasional difficulties” - then so can the Tory party.
"I say to my fellow Conservatives, it's time for politics to be over, folks," he said, speaking outside No 10 on Tuesday morning as prepared for his handover to Ms Truss.
“It’s time for us all to get behind Liz Truss and her team, and her programme, and deliver for the people of this country.
“Because that is what the people of this country want. That’s what they need."
Hinting that he could make a return to No 10, the outgoing PM compared himself to Cincinnatus, a Roman leader who battled against invasion before returning to his farm.
According to historians, Cincinnatus returned to rule Rome once more.
Mr Johnson said: “On the subject of bouncing around in future careers, let me say that I am now like one of those booster rockets that has fulfilled its function.
“I will now be gently re-entering the atmosphere and splashing down invisibly in some remote and obscure corner of the Pacific.
“Like Cincinnatus, I am returning to my plough and I will be offering this government nothing but the most fervent support.”
Mr Johnson said he would be supporting Ms Truss' new government "every step of the way" during a "tough time" for households across the country, as she prepares to take over and delivery a plan to address the escalating energy crisis.
Ms Truss, who will travel to Balmoral to accept the role of prime minister from the Queen later on Tuesday, is reportedly drawing up plans for a freeze in bills which could cost around £100 billion .
“I know that Liz Truss and this compassionate Conservative government will do everything we can to get people through this crisis and this country will endure it," Mr Johnson said.
“And if Putin thinks that he can succeed by blackmailing or bullying the British people, then he is utterly deluded.”
Describing his pride at having won the "biggest majority since 1987", Mr Johnson reeled off what he has considered the greatest hits of his premiership including Brexit, the vaccine rollout and support for Ukraine.
He said: “Through that lacquered black door, a new prime minister will shortly go to meet a fantastic group of public servants.
“The people who got Brexit done. The people who delivered the fastest vaccine rollout in Europe, and never forget 70% of the entire population got a dose within six months – faster than any comparable country. That is government for you. That’s this Conservative government.”
His wife Carrie Johnson, sister Rachel Johnson and fervent Tory supporters such as Nadine Dorries and Jacob Rees-Mogg, who had packed into Downing Street to watch his farewell speech, broke into cheers as he finished.
Mr Johnson held his wife's hand and shook hands with officials as he left the street to energetic applause and got in the car to head off to Balmoral to meet the Queen.

There, he will tender his resignation to the monarch and make way for Ms Truss to be sworn in as prime minister and invited to form a government.
Ms Truss beat rival Rishi Sunak to succeed Mr Johnson as Tory leader on Monday and will address the nation from Downing Street later today marking her first speech as prime minister.
She will begin putting in place her team of ministers, with key allies and supporters already pencilled in for some of the most senior roles, including Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng who is widely expected to be given the crucial role of chancellor.
Ms Truss's first major policy priority will be delivering a package of support for households struggling with energy bills - which are set to soar even higher from October when the price cap lifts prices by at least 80%.

James O'Brien utterly destroys Boris Johnson's 'legacy' amid PM's 'farewell tour'
30 August 2022, 12:20
'Johnson's legacy is a complete breaking of the bond of trust'
By Rashi Agarwal
James O'Brien says that Boris Johnson's legacy "is in the graveyards of Britain" as the Prime Minster starts his farewell tour today.
It comes after PM Boris Johnson travels to Dorset to proclaim his government’s £5 billion superfast internet project to rural communities.
James called out: "The man who is PM for at least another week or say up to, he's gone on a farewell tour to defend his legacy.
"He doesn't have a legacy, his legacy, his legacy is in graveyard up and down this country.
"His legacy is in the fact that Liz Truss doesn't have to do interviews anymore on her march towards Downing Street.
James O'Brien caller agrees that pubs are 'the least of our worries'
"His legacy is a complete breaking of the bond of trust between politics and people, his legacy is the unlawful prorogation of the parliament, his legacy is the misleading of the Queen, the promotion of the Jacob Rees-Mogg who insults the dead of Grenfell.
"The promotion of Nadine Dorris who insults the intelligence of amoeba, his legacy, his legacy.
"That's what he is up to anyway, in case you are wondering.
"He's taken a break from his holidays to go on a farewell tour, who does he think he is, Elton John? It's incredible."

Boris Johnson is on a farewell tour to highlight his achievements – no, seriously
Oonagh Keating. Updated August 31st, 2022
On the 7th of July, Boris Johnson stood in front of the famous door of 10 Downing Street and addressed the nation with these words –
“I want you to know that from now until the new Prime Minister is in place, your interests will be served and the government of the country will be carried on.”
He then proceeded to go on holiday twice, cosplayed as a soldier, flew in a fighter jet, had two large parties and refused to make any decisions or take any action, because that would be the job of the next prime minister.
It was less the behaviour of a prime minister in a crisis than the wish list of a ten-year-old.

What was the Cabinet doing? Either campaigning to beccome the next prime minister, or talking about why they backed the horse they did in that particular race.
Tories have allowed Johnson to squat uselessly in Downing St for far too long. 💷inflation to 18%, 🌊raw sewage in beaches ⚡️energy cap rising 🆘families struggling 🚆⚖️ 👩🏫strikes 👨⚕️shortages Zombie Tories can’t even run a leadership contest properly in the national interest — Chris Bryant (@RhonddaBryant) August 22, 2022
Now, as the countdown to the new prime minister – Liz Truss …it’s going to be Liz Truss – reaches the final few days, Boris Johnson has embarked on a ‘farewell tour’, to promote and celebrate his legacy.

Boris absolutely killed it at the Pyramid Scheme. Super high energy and came back for an encore. This is the 3rd or 4th show of theirs I've been to, and I would highly recommend seeing them if you get the chance.

A palace of sound was created before us, for us to enjoy and dwell another world between space. One of the best shows I've ever been to.. it's one thing to listen to Boris, another to experience a show and the waves of sound.
Boris did an amazing show. They played for two hours and the setlist was epic! They played edited versions of both Feedbacker and Flood. Everybody needs to see this band live.
You don't just see Boris. You experience Boris.

Aerosmith announces farewell tour return, new date for Boston concert
Aerosmith announced this week that its “Peace Out” farewell tour is set to resume in September.
The tour went on hiatus last fall and was indefinitely postponed while lead singer Steven Tyler recovered from damaged vocal cords and a fractured larynx.
“Unfortunately, Steven’s vocal injury is more serious than initially thought,” the band wrote in a social media post announcing the postponement. “As a result, all the currently scheduled PEACE OUT shows must be postponed to sometime in 2024, with new dates to be announced as soon as we know more.”
The band will kick off its return to the road with two newly added shows in Pennsylvania, first at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh on Sept. 20, followed by a show at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Sept. 23. Rockers The Black Crowes are also joining Aerosmith on tour as special guests.
After last year’s New Year’s Eve performance was postponed, Aerosmith’s holiday homecoming stop in Boston will now take place on Dec. 31 at TD Garden, with what is billed as “an electrifying show of Aerosmith’s groundbreaking hits performed in an immersive 360° production as they celebrate 50 years as America’s greatest rock band,” according to a press release.
Guitarist Joe Perry previously promised a return to the road in an interview with the Globe last winter.
“But with any luck we will be back out late summer and fall of 24,” Perry said. “And there’s always next New Year’s Eve! Stay tuned for that.”
Alongside the previously announced tour schedule, Aerosmith plans to make an extra stop in Florida at the Kia Center in Orlando on Feb. 11. The tour wraps with a final set in Buffalo, N.Y. at the KeyBank Center on Feb. 25.
All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the rescheduled shows, and tickets for the rescheduled dates and newly added shows go on sale on Friday at 10 a.m. on ticketmaster.com .
