Pogacar, Van Vleuten, Cavendish, Pidcock and more turn out in Paris to find out the routes for next July's races

The routes for the 2023 Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes were unveiled on Thursday afternoon, with race directors Christian Prudhomme and Marion Rousse unveiling the details of the July stage races.

Double Tour winner Tadej Pogačar and reigning Tour de France Femmes champion Annemiek van Vleuten were the headline stars in attendance at the event, which saw a number of big names head to Paris to find out what they will be tackling next summer.

The long ceremony began with riders walking along the stage, introduced by their accomplishments in the sport, followed by a series of speeches and video highlights of the 2022 races. The president of the Basque government, Iñigo Urkullu, also spoke, with his region hosting the men's Grand Départ with three stages.

After a long build-up, Prudhomme and Rousse unveiled the 2023 race routes. The Puy de Dôme, the mountainous route, and the paucity of time trialling made the headlines in the men's race, while the women are set to tackle the Col du Tourmalet for the first time before concluding their race with a 22km time trial in Pau.

Tour de France 2023 route revealed – mountainous profile, only 22km of time trialling and four summit finishes Tour de France Femmes 2023 route revealed - Iconic Tourmalet summit and time trial finale in Pau Pogacar gives resounding thumbs-up to Tour de France 2023 route Van Vleuten: Tour de France Femmes 2023 route 'an upgrade'

The route presentation took priority on the day despite the star names in attendance, with riders simply taking their seats for the presentation before speaking to the press to give their opinions on the parcours later on.

Alongside Pogačar and Van Vleuten sat Mark Cavendish , who is seeking a record-breaking 35th stage win at next year's race, and Marta Cavalli , who will be a co-leader at French squad FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope.

Cavendish said that there could be "seven or eight" sprint opportunities at the Tour, while noting that "I think the start is going to be the hardest I’ve seen in my career."

Pogačar, meanwhile, said that he liked the route , which is packed with climbing.

"It has a lot of climbing which I like," he said. "Particularly the first and third weeks. It's going to be fun. It's still a long while away but I'm sure it will be another great Tour and I'm excited for next July."

The women's parcours is "an upgrade" on the inaugural 2022 race, Van Vleuten concluded.

"Now with the time trial the course is more complete. So it is an upgrade," she said. "I'm not scared of those early stages, but they will be tricky, you need to stay focussed. It will be hard and sometimes hard to control, so I will also need my team."

Alpe d'Huez stage winner Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) was also in attendance, as were French stars Juliette Labous (Team DSM) and David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), and former green jersey winner Michael Matthews (BikeExchange-Jayco).

Other major names there to watch the presentation included Audrey Cordon-Ragot (Trek-Segafredo), Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ), Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan), Elise Chabbey (Canyon-SRAM), and Greg Van Avermaet (AG2R Citroën).

Cofidis’ Nacer Bouhanni Crashes Out Of Tour De France

(Road Bike Action & AFP; Photo: Bettini)

French sprint hope Nacer Bouhanni was taken to hospital by ambulance after crashing early on the fifth stage of the Tour de France on Wednesday. The 24-year-old former French champion hit the deck after 12km of the 189.5km trek from Arras to Amiens, which was expected to end with a bunch sprint in which he would have been amongst the favorites. It was Bouhanni’s second crash within 10 days having also tasted the tarmac in the finale of the French Championships a week before the Tour began.

He injured his ribs in that fall and initially announced on his Twitter account that he would miss the Tour, only to confirm his participation the day before the Grand Boucle began. However, his Cofidis manager Yvon Sanquer revealed he had broken nothing and his sports director Didier Rous told France Televisions that Bouhanni had “again hurt his injured ribs.” He will be out of action for between eight to 10 days, Sanquer added.

He was the eighth person to abandon the Tour after seven riders crashed out on Monday’s third stage that saw a spectacular pile-up involving around 20 riders. It was Bouhanni’s second participation at the Tour after 2013, in which he also crashed out of the race inside the first week.

Menawhile, New Zealand’s Jack Bauer also abandoned the Tour de France around 100km into Wednesday’s fifth stage. The 30-year-old 2010 national champion was caught up in a crash earlier in the day on the 189.5km run from Arras to Amiens. Cannondale-Garmin’s Bauer also hit the tarmac on the chaotic third stage on Monday in which seven riders were forced out of the race after a pile-up involving around 20 people. Bauer was the second rider to abandon on Wednesday, and ninth overall, after French sprinter Nacer Bouhanni.

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

Bouhanni sprints to victory in Dauphine 2nd stage

  • Copy Link copied

VILLARS-LES-DOMBES, France (AP) — Nacer Bouhanni of France outsprinted compatriot Samuel Dumoulin to claim the second stage of the Criterium du Dauphine on Monday for his biggest win so far this season, while Peter Kennaugh remained in the overall lead.

With less than a month to go before the Tour de France, it will be a huge confidence boost for Bouhanni, who has been struggling since he joined the Cofidis team during the offseason.

Team Sky’s Kennaugh — who won the opening stage on Sunday — kept the leader’s yellow jersey, two seconds ahead of Sacha Modolo, who ended the 173-kilometer (107.5 mile) stage from Le Bourget-du-Lac to Villars-les-Dombes in third place.

Bouhanni made his move about 200 meters from the finish and his powerful burst of speed was unanswered by Dumoulin and Modolo.

“I’m super happy, both for myself and my team,” said Bouhanni after claiming his first win at a World Tour race in 2015. “They always kept faith with me despite a difficult season. But I knew I was in a good form. I keep improving with the Tour de France in the back of my mind, which is my main goal this year. I’m on the right path.”

The first attackers of the day — Arnaud Courteille, Perrig Quemeneur and Daniel Teklehaimanot — jumped out of the pack in the early stages of the race and built a maximum lead of 6 minutes and 50 seconds before they got reined in with 3.5K (2.2 miles) to go after a 170K (106-mile) breakaway.

The stage finale was marred by a crash involving Wilco Kelderman before Bouhanni made the most of the flat finish to secure a first win at the Tour de France warm-up race.

Tuesday’s third stage is 24.5-kilometer (15.2-mile) team time trial between Roanne and Montagny.

Nacer Bouhanni: the sprinter who fought with drunkards and repeatedly crashed into his colleagues

H e missed the Tour de France once due to an altercation with some intoxicated individuals at a hotel, pushed fellow sprinters into fences on several occasions, and even had a confrontation with a jeweler. One could write a book chronicling all the controversial moments in the career of the recently retired Nacer Bouhanni , and that's exactly what IDLProCycling.com has done in their longread.

Bouhanni turned professional in 2011 at the age of 20 and was sent to the multi-day race in Gabon, the 'Tropicale Amissa Bongo,' in January. He immediately claimed victory in the third stage, sprinting ahead of a group of eleven riders. Giovanni Bernaudeau and Mathieu Claude finished behind him, with Sylvain Chavanel taking fourth place. However, he wouldn't win another race that year, and the general cycling public didn't truly become familiar with the young Frenchman until 2012.

French champion Bouhanni may go to the Vuelta

In that year, Bouhanni became the French road champion, sprinting to victory ahead of his teammate Démare and Adrien Petit. Démare, in his first year as a professional, couldn't match Bouhanni's speed at that time. FDJ decided to send the newly crowned national champion to a major tour for the first time: the Vuelta a España. Although he didn't make it to Madrid, he demonstrated his ability to compete at the highest level. He finished fourth in sprints to Logroño and Alcañiz, both won by John Degenkolb. In the hill stage to Barcelona, he secured a seventh-place finish, and the following day, he achieved his best result of the tour with a second-place finish in Sanxenxo, once again trailing behind Degenkolb.

Bouhanni was poised for a breakthrough and eagerly sought a significant international victory in 2013. He had already achieved one in March, during Paris-Nice, while still wearing his French champion's jersey. He secured the win in the first stage-in-line, surpassing competitors like Alessandro Petacchi and Elia Viviani. This success set the stage for his participation in his second grand tour: the Giro d'Italia. In Italy, he achieved third, fourth, and second-place finishes, but a victory continued to elude him as he consistently faced Mark Cavendish.

The young Frenchman was also selected for the Tour de France with hopes of showcasing his strengths on cycling's grandest stage. However, the 2013 Tour proved to be a complete disaster for both him and his entire team. Bouhanni fell ill and was forced to withdraw after just six days, unable to participate in any sprints. Even the classification leader, Thibaut Pinot, could not make it to Paris, as he withdrew due to issues with descending anxiety.

Bouhanni and Démare vie for a spot in the FDJ Tour selection

A Tour to forget quickly, indeed, and Bouhanni followed suit. He managed to secure two stages in the WorldTour in China and claimed victory in numerous French semi-classics, including the Tour de Vendée. 2013 also marked the year when Démare began to ascend within FDJ. While Bouhanni was competing against Cavendish at the highest level in Italy, his teammate Arnaud Démare, a year his junior, was participating in a multi-day event in Dunkirk. Démare triumphed in three stages there. Later that same year, Démare celebrated his first WorldTour victory by winning a stage in the Tour of Switzerland. He swiftly followed it up with another stage win in the Eneco Tour, surpassing riders like Tyler Farrar and André Greipel.

Both Bouhanni and Démare aspired to participate in the Tour de France in 2014, but there was only room for one sprinter on the team with limited spots. Bouhanni sought redemption following his disappointing attempt in 2013, showing in the Giro d'Italia that he had made significant progress towards the world's top echelon. He clinched three stages and the points classification in Italy. Meanwhile, Démare continued to excel in Dunkirk. Both riders were in peak form and on the pre-selection list. However, only one could be selected, and the decision fell to Madiot: Démare earned the opportunity to make his debut in La Grande Boucle, while Bouhanni remained at home.

Madiot chooses Démare, Bouhanni is overlooked

It was a crucial decision, particularly because Démare and Bouhanni had a longstanding inability to cooperate. Démare declared in May 2014, even before the final selection, that they couldn't coexist as team leaders. "We have vastly different personalities and can't be on the Tour together. A win by one of us wouldn't benefit the other in any way. He has already made it clear he wouldn't support me," as reported by Voix du Nord .

Bouhanni no longer wanted to ride for FDJ. His contract was nearing its end, and he believed the team favored Démare. The Tour selection was the last straw for Bouhanni, pushing him to search for a new team, especially after missing out on Milan-Sanremo. He did, however, participate in the Vuelta and secured victory in two stages. It was time for a change as he transitioned to a new team, moving to Cofidis.

Bouhanni misses Tour de France 2016 due to a nighttime fight in a hotel

Released from the rivalry, Bouhanni achieved ten victories for his new team in 2015. However, the Tour de France ended in disappointment due to a crash in stage five, and he couldn't secure a stage win in the Vuelta a España. Nevertheless, he did claim two stages in the Critérium du Dauphiné and finished sixth in his debut at Milan-Sanremo. It was a solid year without any major outliers.

IIn 2016, he didn't even make it to the start of the Tour de France. Bouhanni found himself in an altercation the night before the French championship, resulting in a hand injury that required stitches in four places. Unfortunately, the procedure wasn't done meticulously, leading to the need for surgery. Consequently, he had to skip the Tour, although Cofidis continued to support the sprinter. He claimed that the altercation arose from his frustration with excessively loud, intoxicated guests at the hotel, "I am the victim," he said himself .

However, Bouhanni's combative nature had caused issues in the past. Earlier in 2016, he lost his temper when attempting to enter a jewelry store. The jeweler refused him entry due to his wearing of a cap, leading to a heated exchange. Bouhanni was reported to have pounded on the door and shouted, "Don't you guys know who I am? I'm a millionaire from Nancy!" He also denied that he banged on the door.

'There are parallels between sprinters and boxers. Both need to be aggressive' Nacer Bouhanni

Bouhanni had a passion for boxing, which he pursued as a hobby alongside his cycling career. He expressed on several occasions his desire to transition into professional boxing once his cycling career concluded. When he crossed the finish line first, you could often expect a victory celebration with a boxing-inspired gesture. However, if he didn't win, he would display his frustration by almost breaking his handlebars in half. In a video by Orbea . "Both have to be aggressive. It's akin to a boxer knocking out another boxer."

As Bouhanni matured, he began to receive more negative attention in the news. During the 2016 Paris-Nice, he earned the ire of Michael Matthews when he aggressively pushed him into the barriers during a full sprint. The Australian narrowly avoided a crash. In the 2017 Tour de France, he was fined for beating a Quick-Step rider . He did make it to Paris for the first time, but finished zero times in the top three. That same year, by the way, he wanted to fight with other cyclists after the finish of Paris-Bourges .

Form crisis for Bouhanni in 2018 and 2019, exit from Cofidis

The Frenchman also gradually faced a dip in his form, which didn't align with Cofidis team boss Cédric Vasseur's expectations. Consequently, Vasseur made the decision to exclude Bouhanni from the 2018 Tour de France roster and sent him to the Vuelta a España instead. In Spain, Bouhanni managed to secure a stage win, but Vasseur remained unconvinced. By the end of the season, Vasseur emphasized that Bouhanni needed to step up his performance in 2019, stating, "It's not just about having the highest salary. To be an effective team leader, you need to deliver a lot more," as he told CyclingNews . However, in 2019, Bouhanni failed to secure a single race victory and was not selected for any of the Grand Tours. Eventually, he was allowed to depart from Cofidis.

Bouhanni signed with Arkéa-Samsic for the 2020 season, where he made an immediate recovery. Before the season was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Bouhanni had already notched two victories and achieved notable sprint results in Paris-Nice. In the autumn, he added two more French one-day race wins to his tally, rekindling his hopes of returning to the Tour de France in 2021.

Many places of honor for Bouhanni at the 2021 Tour de France

Bouhanni's career was marked by controversy at every level. First, it was his rivalry with Démare, then it was his involvement in fights and increasingly hazardous sprints. The incident with Matthews wasn't the sole instance of Bouhanni's contentious actions, as his aggressive or confrontational mentality came to the forefront on various occasions. In the Cholet-Pays de la Loire classic, he pushed Jake Stewart into the fences , resulting in Bouhanni's disqualification.

Despite his victory count remaining at zero in early July, he was still included in the Tour de France lineup. Arkéa-Samsic was hoping for a miracle, but that miracle didn't materialize. Bouhanni's Tour was characterized by consistency, with second-place, third-place, and fourth-place finishes, but he couldn't break Mark Cavendish's dominance. His 2021 season concluded without a win, and he never returned to the Tour de France.

Neck fracture at Tour of Turkey for Bouhanni brings early end to career

Indeed, the final downward spiral had begun. In 2022, he did manage to secure a victory at the Roue Tourangelle, but a severe crash during the Tour of Turkey marked a turning point in his season. This incident occurred in April, but it effectively ended his year. Suffering a neck injury in Turkey, he faced a tremendous struggle to regain his previous form.

He did make a comeback to competitive cycling in 2023, achieving a sixth-place finish in Milan-Turin. He also secured another podium finish in a stage of the Tour de l'Ain. However, his performance tanked. "Cycling has always been my great passion, but after my serious fall, it became increasingly challenging. I could no longer reach my previous level. All in all, my career had its share of highs and lows, but I want to cherish the highs the most," he shared on Instagram. Arkéa-Samsic needed a new sprinter and didn't hesitate; they recruited Bouhanni's arch-rival, Démare. Ironically, this development neatly closes the circle.

French sprint ace Nacer Bouhanni claimed his second victory of the Giro d’Italia on Friday as Australian Michael Matthews held on to the race leader’s pink jersey. Bouhanni handed the French their first win in Italy’s biggest race in three years after overcoming a late puncture during Tuesday’s rain-hit fourth stage to triumph at the finish line. On Friday’s transitional 211km stage, the 24-year-old of the FDJ.fr team doubled his tally when he left Italian Giacomo Nizzolo and Slovenian Luka Mezgec with the minor placings. Matthews finished fourth.

After Mezgec had launched the final dash for the finish line, Bouhanni used a combination of sheer speed and tactical nous to squeeze past the Slovenian and on towards victory, with Nizzolo finishing runner-up half a wheel behind.

“There was a gap, and I somehow found my way through it,” said Bouhanni.

Despite benefiting from the early exit of German ace Marcel Kittel, who won two stages in three days before abandoning due to illness, 2012 French champion Bouhanni’s exploits have prompted praise from retired Italian legend Mario Cippollini.

“He’s the archetypal sprinter, he’s afraid of nothing,” said Cipollini, who still holds the record of 42 Giro stage wins.

Matthews, a sprint specialist who rides for Orica, leads compatriot Cadel Evans (BMC), a favorite for overall victory, by 21sec overall ahead of Saturday’s rolling eighth stage from Foligno to Montecopiolo, which ends after a 6.4km climb. Before many of the race’s major climbing difficulties, Evans is in a favourable position having seen pink jersey rival Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) crash out of the race with three broken ribs on Thursday. Evans is a former Tour de France and world champion and his closest rival, Colombian Rigoberto Uran, is third overall at 1:18 behind Matthews.

Tour de France 2023: our selection of the most beautiful mountain stages

Inspiration

Cycling Tourism Nature and Outdoor Activities Sporting Activities Mountains

Reading time: 0 min Published on 4 December 2023, updated on 15 April 2024

The most famous cycle race in the world, the Tour de France will be taking to the skies once again this year, as the 3,404km and 21 stages will take in all 5 of France's mountain ranges! The Pyrenees, the Auvergne volcanoes, the Jura mountains, the Alps and the Vosges massif... The peloton has plenty of pedalling to do and plenty of climbing to do. The grandiose landscapes, the high altitude finishes and the dizzying descents promise to be emotional highs. To experience the highs (and lows) of the Grand Loop, saddle up with our selection of the most beautiful mountain stages.

From Tarbes to Cauterets-Cambasque, the Pyrenees take centre stage

After 3 stages on the Spanish side, welcome to the French Pyrenees! First there's Bayonne and the Basque country, Dax and its thermal baths, Pau and its beautiful castle where King Henry IV was born. And then there's Tarbes, with its breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, its palm-lined streets (yes, yes!) and its gourmet markets. The riders of the 2023 Tour de France will need a lot of courage to tear themselves away from this gentle way of life and tackle the climbs of the Aspin and terrible Tourmalet cols . The reward for all this climbing is a finish on the Cambasque plateau, overlooking the charming resort of Cauterets, in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park, where the Pic du Midi is enthroned. Want to cool off? Try the hike to the peaceful Lac d'Ilhéou . In a green setting with magnificent views and waterfalls, picnics and swimming...

The Puy de Dôme, a feast for the eyes in Auvergne

The ascent of Puy de Dôme, the undisputed star of the Auvergne, will be one of the highlights of the 2023 Tour de France! The youngest and highest volcano in the Puys chain has not featured on the itinerary for 35 years. Taking on this fearsome and majestic peak and finishing with a 360° view over the gentle rolling hills of the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne is sure to motivate many a rider! But did you know that you can also climb this peaceful giant by mule track or on board the Panoramique des Dômes, a picturesque little cogwheel train? In just 15 minutes, you'll be transported to an altitude of 1,465 m, with the 80 volcanoes of the Puy range and the Limagne fault (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site at your feet. To complete a stage that's full of fireworks, the Vulcania Park is not far away! Who can beat that?

Breathtaking escapes in the Jura

Expect to fall under the spell of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne! Just 1 hour from Lyon and the Monts du Beaujolais, this small town in the Ain département, from which the Tour de France 2023 peloton will set off on 14 July, is a delightful medieval town. With its pink stone houses, flower-bedecked bridges and old market hall housing one of France's most popular traditional markets, it is also the gateway to the Dombes region, a paradise for fish farmers and birdwatchers with its landscapes of water and ponds. Take advantage of this area on foot, by boat or, ideally, by bike (it's flat!), before taking to the heights of the Montagnes du Jura , just a stone's throw away. The Pyramide du Bugey, from the top of which you can see Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva, is a must-see. The Tour de France riders attack it via the Col du Grand Colombier. At top speed. Take your time, the panorama is well worth it!

In the Alps, between lakes and legendary passes

It's doubtful that the riders will enjoy the view of Lake Geneva as they take their first pedal to the metal in the Alps at Annemasse on stage 14 of the Tour de France 2023. We recommend this one, though, as well as the view of Lake Annecy and its turquoise waters. Then it's time for a series of twists and turns and climbs to the legendary passes of the Alps, including the famous Col du Feu, an unprecedented climb for the peloton. At an altitude of 1,000 metres, in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area, the stage finish in Morzine won't dampen the spirits of those who love nature. In summer, the little village resort in the Alps is an ideal playground for lovers of outdoor activities : a stroll along the Dérêches river, swimming in Lake Montriond, canyoning or via ferrata... the hardest thing will be to choose.

From Gets to Saint-Gervais, Mont Blanc in your sights

For the first time since its creation, the Tour de France will start from Les Gets. Well-known to mountain bikers (the World Championships were held there in 2022), the pretty Alpine resort will kick off a 15th stage during which you'll need to have plenty of breath. The Col de la Forclaz-Montmin is on the programme. So allow yourself a break at its belvedere for a bird's-eye view of Lake Annecy before setting off again for Saint-Gervais, at the foot of Mont-Blanc. If you want to reach the highest peak in the Alps, this village resort, with its well-preserved heritage and traditions, is the ideal place to stop. And its thermal baths, renowned for the many benefits of their waters, set the well-being at the summit in a magnificent green setting.

Courchevel, star of the Alps

The regulars call it Courch' and they come and go summer and winter as connoisseurs, just like the Tour de France caravan which is visiting the Savoyard resort for the 4th time. Welcome to the pinnacle of top-of-the-range skiing in the Alps, at the heart of the Three Valleys ski area. Courchevel tops the list not only for the size of its ski area (Méribel and Val Thorens are its famous neighbours) but also for its range of hotels (no fewer than 5 mountain palaces , from the Apogée to the Cheval Blanc, not forgetting the K2 Palace, Airelles and the Hôtel Barrière Les Neiges) and restaurants. So, with its 6 hamlets and the surrounding area, the resort has a lot to offer. Take a selfie at the top of La Saulire, take a stroll down to Lac de la Rosière, cycle down the Bike Park, spend the night in the Lacs Merlet refuge or hike through the heart of the Vallée des Avals... You're going to love it!

Full steam ahead in the Vosges

Between the Lorraine plateau and the Alsace plain, the Vosges massif lives up to its reputation: a perfect blend of nature, wide open spaces, traditions and local produce, crafts and fine cheeses. Between the Grand Ballon d'Alsace and the Petit Ballon, via the famous Col de la Schlucht, the Tour de France 2023 will be taking a break from the normality of the mountains, with a new finish on the slopes of the Markstein, in the welcoming family resort of Marlstein Fellering. In the heart of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park , you can enjoy bucolic hikes, tobogganing in the mountain pastures, paragliding with a view, and mountain biking (or mountain bikes) in a landscape of absolute serenity. And for those with a sweet tooth, July is the peak of blueberry season (and the season for tarts in the farm inns).

And (finally) Paris.... and the Olympics!

Will the riders be in Olympic form for the triumphant finish on the Champs-Elysées on 23 July 2023? Just one year ahead of the 2024 Olympics in Paris , the route will certainly provide a magnificent prologue to the sporting event. Starting in Saint-Quentin en Yvelines, all the future Olympic venues in the Yvelines département will be on the peloton's final route. A gigantic loop will join the Colline d'Elancourt (where the mountain bike events will take place), the Golf National in Guyancourt and the Château de Versailles , which will host the equestrian events and part of the modern pentathlon competitions. A prestigious line-up of finishers for a Tour de France 2023 that's sure to be at the top of its game!

Nacer Bouhanni thinking of hanging up his bike after the season

Is Nacer Bouhanni in his last season as a professional cyclist? According to L'Équipe, the French sprinter is thinking of hanging up his bike after the current season. Arkéa-Samsic, which will be called Arkéa-B&B Hotels from next year, seem to already have a replacement in mind. Arnaud Démare is reported to be close to a move to the French team.

Bouhanni has been thorugh some tough years, going from one injury to another, only stacking up 42 race days over last 18 months. The 32-year old's last win dates back to March 2022, when Bouhanni won small French one-day race La Roue Tourangelle (1.1).

"All hell will break loose at the start" - Adam Yates predicting big fight to get in the breakaway on stage 5 of the Tour de France

"Madiot came to me and said: we can't keep you. That was it. Did I want to stay? I would have liked to have the choice. I felt that there was less and less ambition within the team to invest in a sprint train, but I've been here for so long. I thought I meant more to this team," Démare recently told L'Équipe.
